CEO: This project is of critical importance to us - anything you need at all to help make it happen swiftly, let us know and my team will be on it.
Hey, could you give us IntelliJ ultimate licences?
THAT IS A RIDICULOUS REQUEST DON'T YOU KNOW EVERY PENNY COUNTS HERE6 -
TeamLeader: I need you to stop disagreeing with the decision of the management, the people in there are taking their decision for a reason.
IHateForALiving: When integration tests were failing, the management decided to comment out the ingration tests; god knows how many bugs slipped by.
When users had problems with the idiotic migration process the management designed, the management decided to remove down migrations; it took two weeks before the QA team started screaming, as all their machines were filled with garbage data.
I was writing type definitions for my code, you removed it. You effectively ensured the only person capable of working on that particular piece of code would be me.
I have been proposing for 8 months to make a unified scheduled jobs system, you all decided to create at least 5 different -and incompatible- implementations, at least 4 of them are total garbage with setTimeout, there's no way to ever unify them and God willing they never break, if they do there's NO WAY to find out even where tf they're hidden in the code.
Every time you were making one of those bad decision I was the only one warning you of the problems you were creating. The idiotic change of the day is going MongoDB+Angular: I can keep a low profile if you want, but when this blows up you can be damn well sure I'll handle my 2 weeks notice because there's no way on earth I'll be stuck with the aftermath of you lot taking technical decisions you are clearly unable to manage.11 -
tried to stress-test an authenticated websocket endpoint (that makes 2-3 DB calls) by opening closing randomly and it crashed after 20-30 times within a few seconds
I was focused on the middleware glitching out, but error was in the DB-Postgres coz of multiple-connections
Even if I increase the upper limit of simultaneous open connections, the problem at-scale will still exist
If I tried to use a static forever-open connection, it errors out coz 1-command-at-a-time per connection
so im constrained on both sides -.-
Either I rate-limit the endpoint in general and force-close open connections or I cache Organisation-level info that rarely changes
this is one of the few times I miss MS-SQL, it can take a beating but still serve without much complains or losing data consistency -_-2 -
Here, code reviews are not happening 🙁☹️
When the actual error comes to the prod, we dig into the logs and figure out the reason.
The project is not stable and in the development phase, so requirements are coming too much every month with deadlines.
Deadlines are mostly 1 to 2 weeks.
Sr. Devs mostly merge PR without reviewing it.
I had lots of opportunities though due to various requirements like I learnt AWS dynamo DB, S3, and a few things regarding EC2.
But the coding standard which needs to be learned that I think I'm lacking because my code is not getting reviewed.
Not only about coding, we have to create a ticket in Jira for our task which is decided in the scrum and needs to assigned to ourselves.
In the name of scrum, there are 1 to 2 hours of meeting where they started brainstorming about new requirements and how we are going to implement them.
What should I do to make my code more cleaner and professional?2 -
Hey all! It's a me, Skayo, you might know me from the very early years of devRant, my highlight bot, my random quote bot, the devRant-Community on GitHub or any of the dumb rants and things that I've posted during my time.
Since I'm currently doing a cleanup of my old GitHub repos and this platform is still somewhat active, I have decided to pass on or publish all my projects and things I've created for this community back in the days.
Firstly, I have just published and transferred the source codes for the @highlight bot, the @RandomQuote bot, the @here bot, and some weird bot framework to the devRant-Community GitHub organization (https://github.com/devRant-Communit...).
Feel free to check them out if you've ever wondered what awful, awful code was running in the background all these years!
Secondly, I am offering any of the following to anyone who's interested:
- Ownership of the "devRant-Community" organization on GitHub (https://github.com/devRant-Communit...)
- Credentials for the @RandomQuote devRant user
- Credentials for the @highlight devRant user
- Credentials for the @here devRant user
- Credentials for the @devNews devRant user
- Ownership of the "devNews" Discord server
- Ownership of the "Community Programming Book" Discord server
- Anything else that I've forgotten about, maybe check the comments
If you're interested, message me on Discord "@skayodev" or anywhere else I am active under that alias (f.e. Telegram).
I might do a little background check to prevent abuse and I AM NOT SELLING THEM, just giving them away.
Thank you devRant for all the fun we had together and for introducing me to some of my current best friends :)
A thank you especially to @dfox and @trogus, who have created this amazing platform! (and sorry for all of the bullshit I did back then lol)
I wish you all the best <3

There's a guy in standup that just yells his update in an Indian accent.
He's not even Indian. 💀
Its too funny, I can't even feel offended.

Public service announcement: Wearing club de nuit perfume will have random people get close to you and smell the perfume thus complimenting it but making it really uncomfortable.
My brother in law gifted me this awesome perfume and it has brough upon some very serious awkward encounters.
I know it smells good, and I know I am pretty, but please ma'am I am married and this is weird, get away and ask me. Seriously no one every talks about how dudes get put into weird positions sometimes and I don't like females getting close to me.
I wear the perfume because I like the smell, and I get it, but please leave me alone.6 -
Just tech screened a kid for a senior Network automation role, in a specific niche.
He's never automated anything before. Didn't know networking basics, didn't know about the niche...
This guy hasn't heard of unit testing or UDP... good luck out there kid. You've got balls anyway.14 -
- Team_leader_1: I know you're a frontend developer, but trust me NodeJS has threads :) sync operations don't block the main thread :)
- Team_leader_2: You need to study the theory :) NodeJs can handle further operations during the sync function :) it spawns a new thread, you haven't studied Javascript well enough :)
- Me, very ready to dab on 2 condescending little fucks:16 -
Since there are too many button styles, I made a website to collect them:
https://txstc55.github.io/wall-of-b...
Please, flood me with your buttons, let me add them to the wall, I need them, I want them, my precious27 -
I haven't posted here in ages, but I thought I would come on and gush to perhaps the only community that might have people in it who would care: Insomnia allows syncing with git repos to backup your collections! For me, that means that I now have a bunch of repos in my forgejo instance for insomnia collections.
Even if I was a subscriber, I would still much rather sync between desktops this way.
Anyway, I hope everybody's doing well.2 -
The company who said i passed the interview and got the job is not sending me email from hiring department to schedule interview. They said they gonna do it. But the recruiter told me they have a high demand of interviews so i guess they dont have time to reply to me back and hire me officially? Im still waiting its been a few days.
Or is this a slow sign of these shitfucks pulling back and will ghost me or reject me for no fucking reason even after telling me i passed and got the job but now they changed their minds for no reason?8 -
I have only been working with this open-source tool for 2 weeks, but already found 2 bugs. The maintainer is also nice enough answering questions quickly in the forum and submitting the issues for me.
It's nice to be able to contribute something to the open-source community. Yay for me! 💯
Too bad that next week, I will transfer to another project and stop working with this tool.3 -
Since I'm a rather new devrant user, does these kind of trolls happen here more frequently?
Other than that, i rly enjoy the posts here.23 -
Tell me again why anyone would choose to use Oracle Cloud instead if AWS GCP AZURE if Oracle cant even get their fucking website running?7

IHateForALiving: I created a trigger on the model, every time you perform a save it should fire an event. You're calling the same methods I am, and the trigger is NOT firing. Are you sure we are running in the same process?
TheTeamLeader: I'm manually starting this whole piece of code in your same process, there must be something wrong on your side if it's not working
90 minutes of debugging later
TheTeamLeader: there's the thing! Your hooks are registered in a separate process, of course they are not firing
IHateForALiving:rant and that explains everything i'm seeing as target practice for knife throwing your mother used your forehead2 -
One of the guys were tasked to implement a button with a functionality.
When I clicked the button, I got an error. Asked the guy why, and he said that fixing the functionality was not part of the task. What? So basically he just put a nice little button that does nothing? And our team lead just approved his merge request?!
I can't comprehend this logic at all.
Another story, I overheard a different guy debugging a pointer array (C++) with a senior. I couldn't keep my face straight when he seems to struggle to dereference a pointer and iterating through an array. He can't do that and he calls himself a mid-level engineer?!
The more I stay in this company, the more I realize that many people in my teams are clowns.4 -
This is how beautiful corporate is -
I talked to my cousin recently who works in an MNC. He told me about a team member who was assigned a Google Login integration task on the website. They already had a username/password combo working.
That team member took 2 months for it. Every week on the team wide meeting he took an off day and kept saying he was 'stuck' on the task and he's figuring it out.
2 months later, he completed the task and got compliments from the manager that he 'worked day and night' and overcame his struggles. Then he got a week off for his 'efforts'.
Just kill me at this point.2 -
Hot Take:
It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.
For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?
The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.
You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.
When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.17 -
To be locked in a dev-centered paradigm. I want personal projects that earn me money. I want my own business. But, it requires marketing. I have no respect for marketing people. I’m a dev, and that’s a common sentiment among devs. I have to get over it to achieve my goals, but it seems like I’m locked in a dev paradigm. I only see engineering.10

A colleague went to work in his mobile home since he has to spend a few days in our office and he refuses to go on hotel. My office is above a shop and we share our parking.
Now one of the employees of the shop just entered in our office and bitched that the mobile home is taking in too many parking spots.
The parking is more than half empty :')7 -
Why are clients so brain dead?
I've had a client insist for the last two weeks that I provide them with a high level technical specification for fucking OneDrive because our product is able to embed HTML inputted into the CMS.
I've literally had hours of meetings with over a dozen people where I'm trying to explain that just because they're embedding some PowerPoint HTML into our CMS doesn't mean we need to or even can provide technical documents.
This is a huge company with an equity of over £50 billion by the way. I swear the bigger the company the more incompetent the employees get.
Their whole issue stems from one guy not understanding how basic logins and file sharing permissions work + their IT doing security fuckery to screw up which machines can login or access what. So I made and sent them a flow diagram explaining it, out of some naive hope that they'll now leave me alone.
I still don't understand how any of this is my responsibility just because these idiots don't understand that our product is separate from the HTML they've decided to put into the CMS. I don't think any of these people know what they're asking me for when they keep insisting I send them technical documents for a Microsoft owned product that we have nothing to do with.
I'm sure I'll be stuck telling them to talk to their own IT team over and over again as they schedule meetings every few days until the heat death of the universe. Then I'll finally have peace. Either that or somehow one of them finds this post and I get fired.8 -
I have an app idea, I need people here to tell me if this make sense.
In short I want to creat an app that supports forums and chat rooms but only for people close to you.
The reason being that whenever I move to a new place, I basically have no knowledge of what’s going on around me what so ever, so if there’s a forum that I ca easily navigate and see what people are talking about it will be great. There are certain buildings/managements that has their own app but doesn’t seem to be used at all, I think one reason being that it’s a new app for new neighborhood, and the range is too small, I’d rather see what people do around me but not within one single building
And the reason for chat room is because if I’m going some place for an event, first if there’s this forum it will be great because people can just post questions there, second if there’s any session then it really makes sense to have some time and location limited chat room for me to join, and I don’t have to worry about it once I’m out of that location or time has expired. Recently I was in a conference and people are straight up creating messenger groups.
I think it makes sense to combine the two, you have a forum where you post things that your neighbor may have answer to, and if you want to creat an event, you can create a chat room just for the event, which expires after certain time.
I need to know if this idea sounds plausible. Devrant do your best, thanks10 -
Swapped workplaces as the previous one wanted to get rid of me, the new one so far feels even worse.
Teammates are too busy to help, codebase makes spaghetti code look like a compliment (and it takes forever to compile) and my manager somehow believes I’m super man, supposed to finish everything faster than speed of light.
I’m miserable.2 -
I just had a new employee, barely out of school, question whether or not we are ready to start a big refactor of an aging legacy system. She knows nothing about the system we are about to attack, barely has 12 months experience as a developer and knows nothing about the past 6 years of countless meetings, discussions and experience leading to the decision to refactor. Still, she's not "convinced" we are ready to get started.
Gen Z - they sure are something different. God damn it, I know it sounds old but where's the fucking humbleness? Spoilt little shits, the world is fucked.7 -
Lately I've been coming to the realization of how much time social media and YT takes from me and Ive been trying to cut back a lot. YT is definitely the platform that takes the most time from me, so I decided to give it up for the time being. To me RN the landscape of YT is boring and repetitive anyways so I don't mind.
Yesterday was the first day and I was definitely feeling better. My head was not hurting as much, my thoughts were clearer, and I was able to focus on other things. -
My boss can barely speak the native language (Spanish) he keeps using grammatical errors and whenever he’s got an idea of how stupid he is he tries to reach us with explaining SOLID and programming paradigms…
I’m so stuck in this 8h, it pays well, but 90% of the time is just acting to admire someone who barely knows how to declare a variable5
