So I accidentally published my AWS keys to GitHub, stupid me. I realize this the next day.

$ git reset
$ git push

I was too late. Bot already stole the keys and started up 53 EC2 instances. Racked up $4000+ of compute time (probably Bitcoin mining, I'd assume)

4 weeks later, I finally have this shit disputed and settled.

Don't test with hardcoded keys. You WILL forget about them. Env vars always. That is all.

Today I got to work on a Python project...

In my hunt for the perfect productivity app I came upon something called Freeter.

It is a productivity app that lets me gather what I need for the work I'm working on, and then manage it all in one place.

For me, It's super nice to be able to check tasks in Trello, or communicating in Slack without having to change tabs or open a new browser.

When I was in high school, the IT had the bright idea to use the same username/password for each machine in our site, and there was this jerk who knowing this, would occasionally SSH into the computers of the other classmates and wget porn mp4s to their home directory to embarrass them, as some sort of weird-ass prank.

So, in order to give him a lesson, I one day had logged in and set a rule on the class' router to forward all port 22 traffic back to his own IP address, and had SSHed into his machine, aliasing wget with a full-screen kiosk mode chrome, followed by a force disable of the USB HID devices.

It might have been less awkward and he might have seen less scared, if it wasn't for the fact that I had also remotely set his machine to maximum volume, and the teacher wasn't in the middle of a lecture. 😏

To this date, his expression is the most precious reaction I have ever seen.

⚡️ devRantron v1.4.1 ⚡️

I strongly urge all the users of the devRantron to upgrade their app. We have added some major features and made a lot of bugfixes. For example:

1. Edit Rants and Comments
2. Browse Weekly
3. Save drafts of rants so that you can edit and post them later. Also, the app now autosaves when you are typing a new rant and will keep it until you post it.
4. Fixed macOS startup. Previously the app used to open a terminal in the background to launch the app. That has been removed.
5. Confirmation before deleting a rant or comment
6. Huge performance optimization. We have upgraded to React 16 and also changed the way our compiler compiles the application. The way we fetch the notifications has also been changed and it uses less bandwidth.
7. The app will only have single instance now. If you accidentally open the app again, it will just switch to the currently running instance.
8. We now show a release info dialogue before updating. Linux and macOS users will now receive an update notification for new updates.
9. Added the ability to select rant types.

So how has coding impacted my life?

I was downloading a 17 GB file with my sh*tty connection and it took me like 2 days to reach 16.5/17 GB. I paused the download for half an hour to do smth, I unpaused it and guess what? IT RESETTED TO NULL DATA OUT OF 17 GB. ;-;

I dropped my laptop into the ocean the other day.

Now I have a Dell rolling in the deep.

Why did devRant++ come to be? Basically, we have the most awesome community members and we kept getting extremely generous requests from members asking how they could help devRant stay afloat.
