Me: HOW IS IT 3 AM ALREADY!1 -

Little calculation:
you have probably around 20 days holiday per year.
After 60 year old everything is more or less a gift, so I wouldn't count on it.
Let's say you are going to work 30 years. That is 600 days to do whatever you want.
It's less than 2 years.
Shit.
Try to count how many days left of freedom.
Shit.
Suddenly all the things I have to work on today have lost all priority6 -
Fucking developers putting emojis in their code!
My terminal (st) doesn't support displaying emojis and it crashes immediately once it read an emoji. I have been chasing crashing bugs for weeks and I just found out where the issue is.19 -
Do you ever just have a hundred different people asking you a hundred different questions about a hundred different things at a hundred different times of the day?
Fuck man I can't get ANYTHING done, and all my answers to people feel inadequate (quantity over quality). Maybe I shouldn't have decided to help work on so many different codebases. -
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define "Great" he said: "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!" He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.1

1. Needed to access an old SVN backup.
2. Didn't have an SVN client installed.
3. Realised GIT comes with an SVN proxy included.
Cool, I'll just quickly download the repository via SVN.
> git svn init
... git sequentially downloads each of the 1800+ revisions and applies them individually.
It's cool, I didn't want to do anything productive today anyway.3 -
Petition for the pixelated avatars joke to be a permanent feature.

I once ran a batch import job to stress test with much more data than usual in staging... so I thought.
I sshd into prod by accident. History search can be a bastard at times...
The moment I realized what I was doing was crazy. I was shivering and thought I get fired if anything went wrong.
fortunately I just duplicated the original data for the test, and the system was built to ignore unnecessary updates... so the data was correct and nothing went wrong.
Not an active stupid dev choice but still something I will remember for a while. -
New job on the horizon after being unemployed for a couple of months. Moving away from full-stack a bit to focus in on front-end stuff. Cool. Cool, cool, cool. Expect rage-filled rants in the near future 👌
Taking some time off was beneficial in all kinds of ways: got out of long term toxic relationship, got in betterer shape, learned stuff I'm actually interested in, mental health improved massively along with self-esteem, and I reconnected with friends and family. I'm actually enjoying life again. Don't get me wrong though, I had to claw my way out of a pretty dark hole... But I'm starting to think I fucking made it. This is a new start and I'm excited.
Fuck being in a toxic relationship.
Fuck working a job that is killing you.
If you're reading this and feel stuck: you deserve better. Listen to your gut, only you know what kind of life is good for you. It doesn't matter if it's a good job by every possible standard if it's making you miserable! A relationship exists to help you grow, to give you energy, to cultivate love. Sure, you'll go through bad times but if it's pathologically bad it won't get better on it's own. Trust me, I waited years for things to get better.
Anyways, good luck with whatever is challenging you right now, big or small. 😘6 -
I go to unlock my car, but the button I usually use is gone. Instead now it unlocks by long-pressing the car handle.
Ok, got it.
Then my ignition isn't there? Oh, it's in the middle of the steering wheel now? Ok.. but it doesn't work? Oh I have to sign in with Google or Facebook, alright...
Wait, where's my odometer? Oh this is "card" view, and I guess I want "compact" view, huh. Is there a dark theme? Guess not.
Why can't I shift? Oh the stick is a hamburger button now, weird. Um, and reverse is in a sub-menu? That's going to get annoying.
Alright just need to look in the mirror to see if.. wtf? You call this "responsive" or something? I can't see out that tiny window.
I'm very disappointed in all this, I wonder if I can roll back. Oh WHERE ARE THE BRAKES OH GOD
UX DESIGNERS
HAVE
FUCKING
KILLED ME
WHY DID WE TRUST THEM AND THEIR GODFORSAKEN UPDATES10 -
Well yesterday I had the absolute joy of marrying @GIS-Jedi.
I think I have gotten more Facebook notifications today than I did in all of 20184 -
So saw that google released 'official' themes for chrome and thought fuck it, lets try it out...
Chrome will only use CSD if you use the default fucking GTK+ theme else it will revert to chromes custom icons...
Just how fucking lazy do you have to be for this to still be a thing?!2 -
Spec meeting with my client: "Accessibility is very, very important to us. We want to be sure that we meet AA guidelines, at a minimum."
Client delivers front end mockups, can do nothing. Not one single element on it is compliant - have to send it back for revisions.
The fact that they were aware of the WCAG and the AA tier guidelines, and still handed me these shitty designs is pretty impressively stupid.2 -
So we now answer IT support calls. I’m a developer that does help desk support work. Is it just me, or does anyone else find that extremely fucking annoying? I don’t want to spend my day being interrupted all the time to solve an IT problem when I’m employed as a developer. Fuck sake. The worst bit about all of this is I can’t find another job because there aren’t any. Glorious.1

So due to contracted work I am in a team internal chat, yesterday morning I woke up to a notification with a full group tag with "we need to remove all fags, they don't work out the way we planned" - he meant to type tags - there's two members that are gay and got hired just recently lol9

To be able to learn, is an opportunity. To be able to teach, is a privilege.
Cheers to another successful iteration of The #HourOfCode, by Team ACM BVP in association with Code.org. It was amazing teaching the students of 5th standard the basics of programming and logic building, and quite surprising to see how quickly they were able to grasp the concepts!17
