I've been writing a complex mutation engine that dynamically modifies compiled C++ code. Now there's alot of assembly involved, but I got it to work. I finished off writing the last unit test before it was time to port it all to windows. I switched into a release build, ready to bask in the glory of it all. FUCKING GCC OPTIMIZATIONS BROKE EVERYTHING. I had been doing all my dev in debug mode and now some obscure optimization GCC does in release mode is causing a segfault...somewhere. Just when I thought I was done 😅5

Dear Windows, you god damn moronic, ugly, unuseable abomination of an excuse for an OS. I wonder how we could end up here in this situation. You suck, in every way imaginable. I didnt choose Linux or Mac, you made me do it.
I know no other OS that can screw you up this bad when setting up. My friend is an experienced windows user and the last install took him 2 days. I just spend the last day trying to get this uncompatible sucker installed. I manage to set up an hackintosh quicker than I was able to install Windows the last three times I checked, you scumbag.
Your error messages suck ass, there is nothing I cant figure out given enough time, except your useless hints and pathetic attemps to get anything done on your own.
And you are fucking slow. Just why, do you keep installing stuff I didnt ask you to. Now I got this ugly ass Bing-Toolbar because I missed a damn checkbox in an .exe, which could have also been an exploit, you never know.
You are cluttered with useless stuff. I dont care about you lame ass app store, idc about your cortana annoying spy assistant and I certainly dont care about your forced updates.

I really try to see the positive here. You got all the software, but thats not on you, thats because all those poor suckers are trapped with you and the effort to change is too big.
This OS is the most disappointing thing technology could come up with today. I would rather set myself on fire than work with this pain in the ass software professionally. A few minutes ago, I was going crazy over a bug caused due to data mutation in Rails.
Basically, user1 was creating a post record and it's stored in the database normally however, on page reload for a second user, user2, the post (that user1 created) was update to belong to user2. This is because, on page reloads, I was using `<<` method call to append user2 and user1 posts together! Apparently, `<<` not only mutates the array, it also performs a database update.
Kill me please!!
Also, data immutability seems a more reasonable feature in languages now.1 -

Has anyone else actually *used* mutation testing at all?
Heard a lot about it recently - it seems all the rage amongst the bloggers, but I'm generally always very sceptical of things touted as the "latest hotness" (my thoughts on blockchain for instance are well known.)
So I went ahead and whacked http://pitest.org/ into one of my more recent pet projects to see if it offered anything decent. Surprisingly, it did - in particular it caught a number of places where switching "<" for "<=" and similar had no affect on the pass / fail rate (indicating the tests should be better.) There were a *few* false positives, and some which were borderline useful, but as a whole I'd say it was a worthwhile addition.
Curious as to if anyone else has had the same experience?1 -

We're building these fancy live-edit fields for our app. It syncs with the database with every keypress (with a debounce, ofc). Now, we're having a global Vuex module to keep track of the applications sync state. Using this module, we can prevent the user from leaving the page if there is data that hasn't been synced. Though, I think I'm doing something wrong here, and not strictly adhering to the "single source of truth"-principle.
When a user has finished typing, a request is made through Axios. When the response arrives, the field issuing the request updates it's display accoring to the response. However, there is also an Axios interceptor which updates the global state to reflect the latest response. Is this wrong? Should the fields themselves emit the mutation to the store? Or is it okay to use an interceptor since they're running down the same call stack?
I think my biggest worry here is that the interceptor and the field will interpret the response differently...

I had the idea that part of the problem of NN and ML research is we all use the same standard loss and nonlinear functions. In theory most NN architectures are universal aproximators. But theres a big gap between symbolic and numeric computation.
But some of our bigger leaps in improvement weren't just from new architectures, but entire new approaches to how data is transformed, and how we calculate loss, for example KL divergence.
And it occured to me all we really need is training/test/validation data and with the right approach we can let the system discover the architecture (been done before), but also the nonlinear and loss functions itself, and see what pops out the other side as a result.
If a network can instrument its own code as it were, maybe it'd find new and useful nonlinear functions and losses. Networks wouldn't just specificy a conv layer here, or a maxpool there, but derive implementations of these all on their own.
More importantly with a little pruning, we could even use successful examples for bootstrapping smaller more efficient algorithms, all within the graph itself, and use genetic algorithms to mix and match nodes at training time to discover what works or doesn't, or do training, testing, and validation in batches, to anneal a network in the correct direction.
By generating variations of successful nodes and graphs, and using substitution, we can use comparison to minimize error (for some measure of error over accuracy and precision), and select the best graph variations, without strictly having to do much point mutation within any given node, minimizing deleterious effects, sort of like how gene expression leads to unexpected but fitness-improving results for an entire organism, while point-mutations typically cause disease.
It might seem like this wouldn't work out the gate, just on the basis of intuition, but I think the benefit of working through node substitutions or entire subgraph substitution, is that we can check test/validation loss before training is even complete.
If we train a network to specify a known loss, we can even have that evaluate the networks themselves, and run variations on our network loss node to find better losses during training time, and at some point let nodes refer to these same loss calculation graphs, within themselves, switching between them dynamically..via variation and substitution.
I could even invision probabilistic lists of jump addresses, or mappings of value ranges to jump addresses, or having await() style opcodes on some nodes that upon being encountered, queue-up ticks from upstream nodes whose calculations the await()ed node relies on, to do things like emergent convolution.
I've written all the classes and started on the interpreter itself, just a few things that need fleshed out now.

Today I read a great article on mutation tests, how to use and why they are important. It looks like a great thing, but...
I have never wrote any unit test in any of my jobs. Nobody in my workplace does that. And now it seems like 100% test coverage is not enough (I remind you, that I have 0%), they all should mutate to check if the quality of unit tests is high.
It seems that I'm left behind. I played with tests in my free time, but it seems the more you write them, the better you get at it, so I should be writing them in my job, where I code most of my time. Not only that, of course, I would also want to ensure that what I'm working on is bug-free.
Still, it will be impossible to introduce unit tests to my project, because they are novelty to the whole team and our deadlines are tight. The other thing is, we are supposed to write minimum viable product, as it is a demo for a client, and every line of code matters. Some might say that we are delusional that after we finish demo we will make things the right way.
Did any one of you have a situation like this? How did you change your boss and team's mind?8 -
When every related field has a god damn different way of working with the data on hand..
For example:
`tht_date` ("Y-m-d", Date) - expiration date on the product, hence, there can be multiple of the same products with a different THT
`tht_alert` ("-2 months", varchar, DateTime modify mutation string) - sending an alert when this interval is hit, and being the activator of the tht_date field (unless value is "none")
`tht_minimum` ("28", integer, quantity of days before tht_date) - to lock them from being sent out/collected.

How would you expect this ×not× to become a friggin' spaghetti when trying to resolve the best row ID?
These values are in the wrong spot in the first place, then they also act entirely different in relation to eachother..
I hate the person that set this up, for doing this. When is the madness going to stop...

Finally got my multi-page dialog with stepper to have validation on every field based on a schema in a way that doesn’t totally mess up styling and that still collects information from fields from both pages to send the Graphql mutation.
So happy I could cry. -
imagine building an app using javascript(react-native) that get list of skills which will be displayed to the user to select and the same list displayed as interest for the user to do the same if you try to treat them seperately but from the same source you get a shit result e.g

the above code was the fustration i got with javascript when i didnt know of the mutation guy.
Mutation is a nightmare never knew javascript object are passed by reference which make them mutable this sucks....

When AppSync subscription payloads are defined by the initiating mutation instead of what I ASKED for, and filtering only works when the initiating mutation specifically queries for that field in the respond payload that it doesn't even need.

The project lead I have likes to go cowboy and run off and do a bunch of stuff on his own. He makes cards, assigns them to me, and then goes and does it himself negating my work.
He's engineering all our graphql queries to be totally different from literally everything else that exists in the codebase (every mutation is idempotent). The frontend guy brought it up and agreeded with me.
In our alignment meeting, the project lead tried to say these weren't bugs; that we can just handle the state on the frontend. I said they were definitely bugs that should be fixed on the backend.
Guy then says "You approved all my code reviews," implying I approved of the way we were doing things and they weren't bugs.
I told him, "I'm not trying to assign blame," and also, "Yes, I missed those bugs in code review."
I am fucking sick of this guy.1 -

I wish everyone would move away from code coverage as a metric and towards some kind of mutation framework.
There seem to be increasing numbers of devs getting themselves off on their "shiny 95% coverage" and patting themselves on the back for covering everything but the 5% of the codebase that actually needs thorough testing.
Oh, and that's ignoring the tests that just assert an exception isn't thrown, or don't assert anything at all. Completely bloody useless, but hey, you just carry on boasting how great all your tests are because you've got a higher coverage than the team next door 😤🙄3 -

Our mutation testing framework had identified 90 potential mutants and started running through our 342 tests for every single mutant, so 90 * 342 tests
