You can close the lid of your laptop when installing programs to conserve energy.

worst advice:
"Use only jQuery, js is shit"
"Use only js, jQuery is shit"
Dude, use whatever dafuq you want, both have their pros and cons..9 -
So back story... I opened up my own company a while back. I provide not only general IT and phone repair etc but I also do ethical penetration testing and patch the holes.
Before opening my own business me and some buddy's went out to a bowling ally and bar to have a few drinks. I wanted to see what their network was like... I hacked into their entire network in less than two minutes. From my iPhone. I was in their switches, I was configuring their printers and fax machines. Lord knows what I could have done if I had my laptop.
Anyways, back to the rant... I got this text today. 😂😩🔫18 -
Being smart but not applying yourself is the same as being stupid.
I've been having a rough semester , as I sat around and played video games for the first few weeks.
Ever since I stopped gaming I started doing more code stuff, and getting things done.
In hindsight, I probably shouldve stopped gaming when the semester started.
What are your guys experience with this? What stratergies do you use for time management?11 -
Non-existant company hierarchy, great brainstorming and constantly getting new ideas, helpful people, and last but not least, great coffee.

Despite some of the few bat crazy events that occur, I've got a fairly sweet dev job.
1. I only have a 25 minute drive to work. All interstate, I live close to the highway, and the business is right off the exit.
2. My current position, I have a lot of autonomy. My projects don't have deadlines and help other teams with their projects (system design, testing, etc)
3. I work with several military veterans. I think I could listen to their crazy stories all day (being a dev isn't so bad).
4. Department manager just quit. Probably going to have less and less things to rant about. Along with #2, I plan on having a lot more time for side-projects (stuff *I* want to learn about).3 -

I usually use external monitors. After I disconnect all monitors, why do some applications pretend it's monitor is still connected and appear outside the main screen?3

My boss asked me two days ago to fix some errors in an application. From the errors I saw it would be a 5 minute fix. I fixed the problems just now because there was no documentation on how to set it up.
After setting it up it was just changing a value from true to false...
I ruined two days just because there was no documentation. Please everyone, I know writing documentation is boring but at least write some documentation on how to setup a project.3 -
@dfox I saw a few posts lately, about websites that people did. So besides the collabs, I'd like to suggest a new section. "DevReviews" or what ever. The basical idea is, every one, that is signed up gets one "token" devRant ++ suporters maybee an additional free token every months or whatever.
If you wan't your website reviewed, you can post it there and people reviewing it will get such a token for their review.
To ensure a certain quality of the reviews, I'd put a minimum caracter length and a "dispute" function, where the review is taken to a community voting, if the person giving the review should get the token, or if the review should be dismissed. Additional "tokens" for additional/more reviews can be bought through the app, that could help a lot of devs get quality reviews and testing and earn you some $ for the servers.5 -
Have to write ugly ass wrapper classes around a third party dependency since my team can't be bothered learning its vocabulary. A vocabulary which is very well thought and self-consistent. Apparently, defining our own which is only occasionally more descriptive is preferred. It's already collapsing under the weight of its own maintainability cost. And, if someone joins the team that knows the dependency they are fucked anyway as they'll have to use our wrappers.
Time and time again I've tried to oppose this move on several different merits: maintainability chief amongst them, but no one listens to the lowly new hire.
I should just pipe my thoughts to /dev/null and save my breath...2 -
C++. Damn the pointers. It's because I learned Java before C++ and the memory management in C++. I don't get it ever, the object creation, memory allocation, deallocation and everything4

For my Thesis
Hello devs on the internet,
I’m currently collecting data for my thesis. As my thesis is about freelancers I was hoping to interview a couple of people here who used to have a regular job and transitioned to freelancing. Interviews will be over email so it hopefully won’t take up a lot of time.
As for people who wouldn’t be available for interviews, could you help me out by answering a survey? 😁
For interviews could you email me at uzair.hayat@benilde.edu.ph
For surveys you can fill it out here https://goo.gl/forms/...
This message has not been approved by Dfox and I hope it won’t be removed haha2 -
Confession: I'm launching a major project for a client this time next week. It's some of the worst code I've ever written in my entire life. It's beyond awful, but I have no choice. It's sure going to be fun fixing it for the next 2 weeks post launch.8
