All the new computer science students at my university refer to include statements in C++ as "hashtag include"23

Poor Dijkstra is probably crying in his grave because my professor calls him "digest-tra" 😢 feelsbadman8

The computer science department at my university is located in the basement. I know I'm supposed to get real world experience, but what a sick joke! /s6

Messing around with twitter4j and accidentally got my account locked because a simple typo made me favorite 2k+ tweets in under a few seconds. Oops.3

Everyone is going to Halloween parties this weekend and I'm going to a Hack-a-thon. I think I I'm the real winner here.6

I just had a dream about how to squash a bug I was encountering in my app. I immediately woke up, fixed the bug, and cleaned up my code. I thought this only happened in movies.3
-
Sometimes when I can't find an error, I just rewrite the problematic code. Often I end up solving the error and having cleaner code. Win win.3

I have a project at work that involves learning a bunch of AWS stuff and rewriting a couple credential-generating scripts. I don't even know what the ask is, apart from some high-level "make this SSO" so ... idfk.
I am so incredibly bored of it (and burned out in general) that I can't even look at it.
I would rather see how many times it takes to beat my head against the wall to make a hole than think about this ticket again.
"Oh, I thought you would find that fun" No. No I do not. I can't even bring myself to look at it anymore. "Well, try to push through it and get it outta here!" Ughhhhh
I hope Russia nukes the bloody company.10 -
The main reason I want to be an app developer is so that I can enable dark themes by default. That way people can see for themselves and the dark side can take over!3
-
My idea of a crazy night : wipe an old windows pc I have and install a new Linux distribution that I've never used before.2

There is a red button in a briefcase that launches nukes if you got access code.
We then gave it to a emotionally unstable hothead.
Left a post-it with admin password inside briefcase.3 -
Newbie just started this week and went changing hibernate settings on us. Changed hbm2ddl from update to create, which nukes the data on every deploy. She thought she was working against her local DB when in fact she was pointed at the shared integration database, thus nuking INT. Through a couple hours of PL/SQL wizardry, I managed to resurrect the data. Within 5 minutes of giving the team the all clear, the data disappeared again...betcha can guess what happened...again!2

!rant for any rock/metal fans,
Avenged Sevenfold just released a new concept album (the stage) about artificial intelligence. It includes a spoken word section in the last song by Neil deGrasse Tyson!1 -
Maybe I'm just crazy, but it drives me nuts when people don't use keyboard shortcuts. It takes so much more time to right click to copy and paste!

Tinfoil hat time!
So, for this scenario we assume a world war has is in full swing, and all communications are either completely out or extremely monitored.
Additionally, no servers can be trusted and no ISPs can be trusted. Even when downloading software you cannot know if the software you got is tampered or not.
You have to send a message to a recipient you cannot physically contact, and you have to make sure him and only him get the message, otherwise nukes are deployed and we all die. The message has to arrive within 3 months or else it's too late.
Is it possible? If yes, how?17 -
My first day of my internship. I was confident in my abilities to develop, but wow. I was totally put in place after the first day. I realized that I didn't know as much as I thought. Almost wanted to change career paths. I'm thankful for that day because it really made me push on and become a better person and programmer!

Since learning how to program, I have started to see the world in a different way. The algorithmic and Mathematical way of approaching computing problems I have adapted to approach all of my problems. Everything is just a problem that can be solved by taking a logical approach!

Oh no AI can destroy hummanity in the future! It is like skynet and such... Bad! It will be the end! FEAR THE AI!
Yeah so i cant sleep now so im writting a rant about that.
What a load of bullshit.
AI is just a bunch of if elses, and im not joking, they might not be binary and some architectures of ML are more complex but in general they are a lot of little neurons that decide that to output depending on the input. Even humans work that way. It is complicated to analyse it yes. But it is not going to end humanity. Why? Because by itself it is useless. Just like human without arms and legs.
But but but... internet.... nukes... robots! Yeah... So maybe DONT FUCKING GIVE IT BLOODY WEAPONS?! Would you wire a fucking random number generator to a bomb? If you cant predict actions of a black box dont give it fucking influence over anything! This is why goverment isnt giving away nukes to everybody!
Also if you think that your skynet will take control of the internet remember how flawless our infrastructure is and how that infrastructure is so fast that it will be able to accomodate terabytes per second or more throughput needed by the AI to operate. If you connect it to the internet using USB 2.0 it wont be able to do anything bloody dangerous because it cant overcome laws of physics... If the connection isnt the issue just imagine the AI struggle to hack every possible server without knowing about those 1 000 000 errors and "features" that those servers were equiped with by their master programmers... We cant make them work propely yet alone modify them to do something sinister!
AI is a tool just like a nuclear power. You can use it safely but if you are a idiot then... No matter what is the technology you are going to fuck shit up.
Making a reactor that can go prompt critical? Giving AI weapons or controls over something important? Making nukes without proper antitamper measures? Building a chemical plant without the means to contain potential chemical leak? Just doing something stupid? Yeah that is the cause of the damage, not the technology itself.
And that is true for everything in life not only AI.5 -
One of these days....
Where you want to do a tiny task
....
And suddenly an explosion nukes every service, related service and dependant service.
Chain reaction. Yaaaayyy........
(ancient prometheus node lead to an snapshot error, snapshot error made the migration tool unhappy, migration tool unhappy meant that my task failed - updating prometheus meant checking every target, exporter and so on...
Fuckity fuck it''s gangbang time.)1 -
I have a few old laptops laying around. I was thinking to repurpose them for novel, and/or 'smart', projects. Any ideas or tips?8
-
I feel so overwhelmed. I feel like I'm never going to actually learn everything about programming. I feel like I'm just going to learn some new API every time I want to do some thing. I feel like I'll lose the ability to do basic programming. I feel like I need a cup of coffee.3

So LUA injector to Payday 2 requires on Linux certain library (libcurl3). So you know, sudo apt install libcurl3 and there you go!
You would think.
Apparently while you do that, the installation of libcurl3, it completely nukes your Steam installation... For some reason.
Can some please explain me, what the hell just happened? Please?1 -
Time to say no to artificial intelligence, tried ChatGPT today and it's frightening.
The day when we won't consider nukes as the biggest threat to our civilization is approaching exponentially faster and faster and this is really worrying.20 -
Family: oh you're studying computer science? That's awesome! Have you heard of Mark Zuckerberg?
Me: Of course!
Family: yeah when are you coming out with the next Facebook? We'd like to be rich now!
Me: 🙃🙃🙃🙃 -
I often stop and think that my entire professional life with (hopefully) revolve around turning 0s into 1s, or 1s into 0s.2

Since when is blender utterly unusable for meshes > 500k tris. I have 32 gig RAM and it's literally unusable. You try to do anything and it fills up your entire RAM and dies. No matter what you do
Like fucking really? I can't add a subdivision surface modifier to a mesh with 800k tris? Is that too much to ask for
I'm so fucking pissed off right now. I've already wasted an hour trying to export ANY high res model and zero luck so far. Either blender just crashes. Or the exported model doesn't contain any geometry. Or the exported model doesn't contain tangents (even though I explicitely enabled them). Or I try do enter edit mode and it crashes. And then every damn time I have to renavigate to the blender folder (because of course you can't start blender just normally, no no that doesn't work) and when blender crashes it nukes my terminal as well. And then I have to reload the stupid model. And then I have to do what I'm trying to do hoping it doesn't crash. And then it crashes anyway8 -
Happy fricken Tuesday devs!! You guys are awesome and I hope you have a stellar day and rest of your week.

/* me coding along, making good progress on a project I'm currently working on. About to implement the next feature, which could be implemented in a few different ways. */
Me: this is going swimmingly! Let's get this next part started!
Brain: careful mate...
Me: *spends hours implementing the next part.*
Brain: listen here mate, you should have used the other method. It might make it easier.
Me: *spends hours re-implementing the next part.*
Brain: wait. No you were right. The other way was way better, my bad. Sorry
Me: *slams face in keyboard* I guess I'll try again tomorrow.
/* repeat this process for the next week or so, never actually making any real progress. */ -
Whoever came up with the PSD2 can get fucked up their ass by all the cocks in the world combined.
Whoever fucked up the new security implementations so bad can get fucked up their ass by all the spiked, rusty, aids-contaminated metal poles in existance.
And whoever allowed all this to happen and approved it should take all the nukes in the world, shove them all up their worthless holes, and detonate them all at once.
Fuck you.
Die in a fire.
Sincerely,
Someone who's failing harder and harder every day to not lose faith in what little good there is in humanity.9 -
apparently the chance of getting hit by an asteroid that nukes some large hole in the land or causes tsunamis everywhere is a lot more common than humans have seen lately
and asteroids come in chunks because they keep breaking up into smaller and smaller pieces until they finally disintegrate
and earth has had an awful lot of near misses the last 20 years so that means there's a bunch of chunks flying repeatedly though this solar system's gravity wells and we're playing Russian roulette every time, none the wiser
and it's not the asteroid itself that's really the problem though millions will die if one hits. it's that every time those things hit there's actual climate change
so then you'll have to survive sun block out, famines, and floods for like 2-5 years after
but the SPACEFORCE fired the guy responsible for planning for this due to DEI
how to win the game of geopolitics. know this information and hide it from the countries you want to die, wait for an asteroid, and they're unprepared and die. whoops wasn't us!4 -
Soooooo, how often does it happen that someone nukes a database and attempts for a restore fail?
Asking for a friend, who happens to be "future me"
Iam very much not responsible for fixing it but I will have a whole lot of work....7 -
My little journey of regrets:
I remember when I was fourteen, I opened a small gap the door of "programming". It were the first steps of html, tags and what they do, to be precise.
"May, looks good. Thanks for the glimpse. Cya"
For about the other half of my life only magic happened at my desktop.
And now I'm standing once again at the door of programming trying to breach it with nukes n shit.
"Giev me all the knowledge plx, teach me senpai! I will never ignore and betray you again!" -
How common is it to use 3rd party libraries? I feel like I might be too reliant on them. What's a good balance of using them to expedite certain aspects of coding, and relying on them?4
-
Going to the job fair as a junior and seeing the requirements makes me want to quit. How am I supposed to to get enough experience as a student?! Time to get back to my personal projects!4
-
Best keyboards for programming? I currently use the Logitech wave and love it, but would like to explore other options.4

I think it would be interesting to turn a experience into a haiku. Like take a memorable experience, good or bad, funny or serious, and turn it into a Haiku.

Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1 -
Now that you can make native apps in javascript for all platforms, is there any use for learning native development? Why not just learn a flavor of javascript and launch on all platforms?1

Looking for some feedback here:
What is the general attitude towards visible tattoos in this field?7 -
Enlightenment did happen, but it would be a reach to call a little rich Italian hipsters’ literature fad a “worldwide phenomenon”.
When we emerged as a species, all we had was tools and fear. Nothing has changed. Our progress in tools did fix suffering somewhat, but it couldn’t fix fear.
Fear is what makes one person attack the other, from a pub scuffle to launching nukes. It’s all the same, isn’t it. If I don’t strike now, they’ll strike first.
Losing an argument says nothing about you. Someone yelling at you while you stay silent says nothing about you. Being rejected says nothing about you. Being ghosted says nothing about you. Being betrayed says nothing about you. Even obeying your boss says nothing about you.
There is no need to compensate. You have the power to turn your “yes” into “no” swiftly and confidently whenever you want to.
