Spend half the day setting up a dedicated server at work (including getting all the hardware together) and installing CentOS and tweaking around.
For a client? Oh no, there just literally wasn't anything else to do and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing or working on shell scripts AGAIN. (working in support (+ linux server management) and due to the holidays hardly any support requests come in)
*Hmmm, lets install nginx for fun*
"yum install ngi..."
*wait, let's compile from source and make it more fun!*
So yeah, that was my day, I guess.5 -
Trying to explain my job to friend who don't know computers.
Friend: So what do you do?
Me: Well they call me a "DevOps Engineer", but really I am just a Release or Automation Engineer.
Friend: What is that?
Me: Well I assist developers build and deploy their code as well as write code to automated the whole process and build the virtual servers.
Friend: So you like program?
Me: Kinda...
Friend: Dude can you write an app for me, got some ideas!
Me: (blinks) no.6 -
Not me, but a colleague questioned himself for a while over this one. He simply forgot a semicolon when doing some server maintenance:
sudo yum remove application1 sudo yum remove application2
This didn't just remove application1 and 2, it removed sudo and yum too. One slightly embarrassing call to the ops team later, we had to replace the box.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should automate your server maintenance!6 -
I met some guys who were Computer Engineering students who were studying web platform as a hobby aside from IoT lessons at school, they met me at my school's library coding stuff and I noticed one of them messing around with yum
"Is that Fedora?" I said, because I wasn't familiar what are the package managers of every distro.
"No, it's CentOS" the guy replied, he also noticed I was coding in a cloud IDE, so he was amazed. He asked if he can use C# there, can he share his workspace, etc.He also asked what's my course. I replied " i'm jsut a senior high student". And they were out of words.
after that, I always think that my skills are way ahead of my age. I don't know my brain anymore, but I felt badass3 -
Series of events between me (Mi) and dude in office (DIO).
Instance 1
DIO: There is not psql installed on staging.
Mi: Install it.
DIO: YUM is not working.
Mi: *tries yum it works* It is
DIO: Oh. Didn't work earlier.
Mi: *blank* Make sure you install 9.6
DIO: Cannot find psql
Mi: *types psql, it is already installed*
DIO: Oh, didn't work earlier.
Instance 2
DIO: Made this change to the API, the endpoint is not returning the right value
Mi: *restarts server, shit starts working*
DIO: I am pretty sure I did that, don't know what happened.
Instance 3
DIO: Cannot alter role to give login to this db user.
MI: *runs alter role db_user with login* works
DIO: Don't know why it wasn't working before.
Instance 4
DIO: I have been stuck on this test for the past 1 day, cannot get the API to return the right data while the Rest Endpoint works fine.
Mi: You are hitting the wrong endpoint in the test.
DIO: Oh, I put an extra 's'
Mi: BTW you are testing Spring-Boot with that test and nothing else.
DIO: Yes but what if Spring Boot has a bug?
Mi: ok.7 -
I have never doubted my abilities more, before this happened:
I got a Linux VM on Azure, downloaded apache httpd source which I proceeded to configure, make and install.
As expected, install failed with something related to apr and apr-util.
Searched several mailing lists, tried out several configure options, nothing worked..
After almost an hour, it stuck to me, all I had to do was "sudo yum install httpd" !!!
Disappointed that I missed something so simple, but when I did that, it came back with 'Nothing to do'...
Realized, httpd was pre-installed in that VM.. I just had to start the service !!!
:facepalm1 -
Really loving the instant legacy code being added to our new project by devs who think they are too good to follow our peer review process, yum... today I found out that there are two different implementations of an API endpoint that does the same thing running in prod, in two different places, because the guy who wrote the second one wasn't aware that the first one existed and didn't let a second developer look at it before he pushed it to master.7

Nobody understands me
Does it matter
Not at all
I have my laptop
And it understands what I am saying
That's enough for me ;)4 -
Decided to install new CentOS to prepare for Red Hat exams.
a) had to disable VirtualBox Audio and USB otherwise it got stuck during boot (lvm2 masking did not help)
b) First command - "dnf update". Crashed in middle of the process and completely screwed dnf/yum (TWICE!). Went through just fine when executed from runlevel 3.
So far it held up to the name Enterprise Linux because this is the exact out of box clusterfuck I would expect from a corporate.2 -
On today's episode of Corporate BS
I must please go update logstash on this server. Okay, so I literally just need to ssh in and run "yum update logstash"
No, I need to apply for temp root access and depending who picks up that ticket, I may have to log a change request5 -
So I was reading a comment where someone said that Windows is sure as hell not polished, just 'psychologically pleasing.' I get that, and I've tried to main with Mint Cinnamon/KDE for a while, and I've tried so many distro, but I have too many issues with Linux to make it a true daily workstation and personal os.
For example, Windows apps typically have installers, graphical ones, which allow you to choose an install location and stuff. Does apt or yum do that? Not unless you use some crazy parametets or some shit.
Okay, fine, what if you DON'T CARE about everything being open source and you just want your 3-monitor Nvidia setup to work without vsync issues? Also a PITA, need to do either cmdline driver install and co fig or some other complicated shit.
I may be considered a power user, but damn if Linux isn't friendly to windows users. Don't get me wrong, I don't like windows, but so far it's the best option for me versus aillion Linux issues. Get me something that functions like Windows on multiple levels (Aesthetic not completely required, but core functionality of programs is.) and only then can I attempt a full migration.6 -
If any of you out there are forced to develop on a Windows machine and want to make it just a little more linux like, download the chocolatey package manager. It's similar to Macs brew or linux apt, yum, pacman, zypper; but for windows.
Could make you're life just that much easier2 -
Learning Image Processing,Deep Learning,Machine Learning,Data modeling, mining and etc related to and also work on them are so much easier than installing requiremnts, packages and tools related to them!2

/*
* This question isn't about diminishing other operating systems !
* I'm just have no idea. 😫
*/
Is there a big difference on the amount of packages on pacman, apt-get and yum. Can I use either of them and be sure that most applications are available ?3 -
Fedora 28's copy of pkgconf is borked and is self-referencial. A "yum reinstall" didn't help, so it seems to be a stock issue. Fuck me...
-
evry thing have bug for me
my phone them
Spotify
fedora
My headphones
My german class time
My german speaking
Uni projector

So yesterday, I got a call from some cousins saying my aunt broke a toenail and (since she's diabetic) she could now either lose both legs due to gangrene or die if they amputate. 2 hour drive to get them and me up to see her, 2 back, all the while having to be stone-faced to console 2 grown men. Today is finals week, and I could also get a call any moment from the hospital to tell me she's either dead or now unable to take care of herself. Could even be mid-class with one of those "well put it on speakerphone" teachers.
On the tech front, i'm trying to compile a toolchain from source. But, oh wait, one of the binaries it needs to configure (pkg-config) is self-calling so it crashes my machine. Let's build it from source, then? Nope, it requires a working copy... of... itself? Well, fuck. A "yum reinstall" doesn't help as it just reinstates the self-calling version, and I can't outright remove it because systemctl needs it. Well, apparently it's like a binary but is a text script, somehow, so I removed the recursive line and configuring works. Now though, I'm worried it might be broken, so i'm gonna try and compile from source. But, despite it needing itself, it also needs a SUPER FUCKING SPECIFIC version of libtool, so that's gotta be compiled...
I really wanna fucking shoot myself.3 -
Finally completed the stupid boring never-ending android project and sent it to client. Phew! Now I can work on the other iOS app which I like. Yum.4
-
Software packages can be installed only through proprietary software manager on a corporate server to ensure auditability and compliance.
The package manager fails, because it attempts to execute `yum` on an Ubuntu server.3 -
I have Dell latitude 3379 with on-board graphic card
Do you think it's enough for training ANN and doing a small ML project or I must improve it to laptop with Nvidia graphic card?6 -
There is paradox in my mind
I wanna be special person and i hate do simple thing that every one can do it (such as creating website with django or do things my classmates do)
And
I afraid
And I can't believe in myself
I think I'm not enough to rich my goal
So i get lost and confused:/
I can't choose my major5 -
As odd as it may be, but when I find an old 5000 line kshell script on an old build server that has its own built in menu happiness fills me.3

How then fuck do i install openjdk on RHEL8 machine? As root i tried yum but doesnt work. I tried using wget from Nexus repo to download openjdk zip and now what. I gotta configure the shit to be adapted to the migration from RHEL7. Also does RHEL8 even support java 8? Or can this shit handle only java 17? Cause this would be a beyond of a clusterfuck since the legacy code project is built to support only java 1.8.0, and for special cases java 11! How the fuck do i handle java 17. I fucking hate legacy code!5 -
So between Linux distros like Ubuntu, Manjaro, and Fedora the only difference in the Terminal is the package manager right?
Like Ubuntu uses apt-get, Manjaro uses pacman and I think Fedora uses yum (that’s what I’ve been told I could be wrong) but other than that is there any other big difference in the terminal?17 -
mysqldump db > db.sql
yum install mariadb
*config*
mysql -u username --password pass db < db.sql
Why do I control mariadb with the mysql word? I installed it, I want to use it....2 -
Hey guys
Can I connect my laptop to a projector while installing ubuntu
???
I will have a lecture about installing ubuntu dual boot windows and basics of Linux
I tried the virtual box but it has some errors and I haven't time to fix it9 -
So one of my first rants was about me unable to setup Debian with (lightdm) Cinnamon to be working with optimus laptop and to make the damn hdmi port work, where the port is attached to the nvidia gpu (vga passthrough?)
I have to try it with another distro because the dual-booted Windows greatly feeds my procrastination. (Like ... Factorio, Stellaris, Rimworld and etc. type of procrastination, it's getting somewhat severe. )
So what would you people of devrant recommend me to try? I am thinking a lot about Arch but I am afraid there will be a lot more problems with the lenovo drivers for various things.
The next one is classical Ubuntu, at the end this distro looks like it's at least trying to work amongst other distro's.
Also thought about Fedora because yum and RedHat. ( ..lol )
Thx ppl.2 -
I have no idea how to make custom images so i keep a txt file for “apt-get install“ or “yum install“
-
What would you guys use to backup multiple mysql databases incrementally without root access. I've been just exporting the db through PMA but I'm switching everything to a version controlled system and would like to do the same for our databases.
Oh yeah and the reason I don't have root is we have cloud hosting which doesn't provide root access. I can't even run Yum.
Edit: grammar4 -
Where can find an all in one guide to set up/configure a ELK environment manually from the tars (not yum, apt-get, docker image)?
I am following the component docs from Elastic but not sure how each component integrates with each other or how to set the mongo connection (DB is not local)5 -
Yum -y update
.........................
Reboot
.........................
CWP error 404 on all domains
Face palm3 -
what linux distro should i try next?
requirements:
- cool
- good design
- comes with typical software and wine
- apt not yum
i was thinking elementary, zorin or kali21 -
Anyone who is a Windchill (a PLM software) java developer ‽ how is/was your career and do you enjoy your work‽2

What do you thing about a manager who doesn't communicate with the team (2 developers)? It would even go to months without even asking our progress or if we find some difficulties or if the missions are okay ,challenging or make us improve. I still don't have a vision for my carreer and the company seems to care less about what i feel or if i'm satisfied or not. Please What do you think. I would be grateful if you share with me any advice.4
