@netikras since when does proprietary mean bad?
Lemme tell you 3 stories.
CISCO AnyConnect:
- come in to the office
- use internal resources (company newsletter, jira, etc.)
- connect to client's VPN using Cisco AnyConnect
- lose access to my company resources, because AnyConnect overwrites routing table (rather normal for VPN clients)
- issue a route command updating routing table so you could reach confluence page in the intranet
- route command executes successfully, `route -n` shows nothing has changed
- google this whole WTF case
- Cisco AnyConnect constantly overwrites OS routing table to ENFORCE you to use VPN settings and nothing else.
Sooo basically if you want to check your company's email, you have to disconnect from client's VPN, check email and reconnect again. Neat!
Can be easily resolved by using opensource VPN client -- openconnect
CISCO AnyConnect:
- get a server in your company
- connect it to client's VPN and keep the VPN running for data sync. VPN has to be UP at all times
- network glitch [uh-oh]
- VPN is no longer working, AnyConnect still believes everything is peachy. No reconnect attempts.
- service is unable to sync data w/ client's systems. Data gets outdated and eventually corrupted
OpenConnect (OSS alternative to AnyConnect) detects all network glitches, reports them to the log and attempts reconnect immediatelly. Subsequent reconnect attempts getting triggered with longer delays to not to spam network.
SYMANTEC VIP (alleged 2FA?):
- client's portal requires Sym VIP otp code to log in
- open up a browser in your laptop
- navigate to the portal
- enter your credentials
- click on a Sym VIP icon in the systray
- write down the shown otp number
umm... in what fucking way is that a secure 2FA? Everything is IN the same fucking device, a single click away.
Can be easily solved by opensource alternatives to Sym VIP app: they make HTTP calls to Symantec to register a new token and return you the whole totp url. You can convert that url to a qr code and scan it w/ your phone (e.g. Google's Authenticator). Now you have a true 2FA.
Proprietary is not always bad. There are good propr sw too. But the ones that are core to your BAU and are doing shit -- well these ARE bad. and w/o an oppurtunity to workaround/fix it yourself.13 -
I lost all my data from a terrible accident. By using recovery software over the course of a week (because the computer I had to use to recover it was less than adequate), I managed to recover most data. Upon restoring the data to the SSD, there was numerous corruption issues, strange glitches, etc. I tried running many system recovery tools, repairing the registry, disk check, everything. Today, I could not install Visual Studio Community updates because... it couldn't. It just popped up a blank window and that's it. I tried everything. Eventually, that combined with every other issue I've had, apps not working because of corrupt files and having to reinstall basically everything I've tried to use anyway, I decided to do a clean install.
So I'm waiting for many many many installers, right now. Nanite was only the tip of the ice berg. I guess what I'm trying to say is...
How's everyone doing? :)2 -
Every Website seem to has some glitches... and you can't ignore them like non-web-devs do... i wish i could look up the menu on a local restaurant-website without going crazy about the buggy slider or the misaligned address-div

Worst thing you've seen another dev do? Here is another.
Early into our eCommerce venture, we experienced the normal growing pains.
Part of the learning process was realizing in web development, you should only access data resources on an as-needed basis.
One business object on it's creation would populate db lookups, initialize business rule engines (calling the db), etc.
Initially, this design was fine, no one noticed anything until business started to grow and started to cause problems in other systems (classic scaling problems)
VP wanted a review of the code and recommendations before throwing hardware at the problem (which they already started to do).
Over a month, I started making some aggressive changes by streamlining SQL, moving initialization, and refactoring like a mad man.
Over all page loads were not really affected, but the back-end resources were almost back to pre-eCommerce levels.
The main web developer at the time was not amused and fought my changes as much as she could.
Couple months later the CEO was speaking to everyone about his experience at a trade show when another CEO was complementing him on the changes to our web site.
The site was must faster, pages loaded without any glitches, checkout actually worked the first time, etc.
CEO wanted to thank everyone involved etc..and so on.
About a week later the VP handed out 'Thank You' certificates for the entire web team (only 4 at the time, I was on another team). I was noticeably excluded (not that I cared about a stupid piece of paper, but they also got a pizza lunch...I was much more pissed about that). My boss went to find out what was going on.
MyBoss: "Well, turned out 'Sally' did make all the web site performance improvements."
Me: "Where have you been the past 3 months? 'Sally' is the one who fought all my improvements. All my improvements are still in the production code."
MyBoss: "I'm just the messenger. What would you like me to do? I can buy you a pizza if you want. The team already reviewed the code and they are the ones who gave her the credit."
Me: "That's crap. My comments are all over that code base. I put my initials, date, what I did, why, and what was improved. I put the actual performance improvement numbers in the code!"
MyBoss: "Yea? Weird. That is what 'Tom' said why 'Sally' was put in for a promotion. For her due diligence for documenting the improvements."
Me:"What!? No. Look...lets look at the code"
Open up the file...there it was...*her* initials...the date, what changed, performance improvement numbers, etc.
WTF!
I opened version control and saw that she made one change, the day *after* the CEO thanked everyone and replaced my initials with hers.
She knew the other devs would only look at the current code to see who made the improvements (not bother to look at the code-differences)
MyBoss: "Wow...that's dirty. Best to move on and forget about it. Let them have their little party. Let us grown ups keeping doing the important things."8 -
So apparently Firefox can't handle (quick) animations from opacity 0 to opacity greater-than-zero and glitches around. Instead you need to animate starting from something greater than 0, like 0.001.
I had to debug this shit and it just adds to my reasons to dislike this browser.5 -
Fun fact for today
Do you know why we call computer bugs as computer bugs, and not just the formal word for it - "errors and glitches"
Some of you guys might already know this, but still worth sharing:

Authors of this textbook that I'm holding should replace their GPU because that graphical glitches are bad

Unpopular opinion: although Windows 10 improved in the years Windows 7 is still better: Windows Search on 10 is almost useless and the control panel and many “modernised” system utilities often glitches, the system looks cruder and takes way more system resources than 7 without giving significant features in return.
Newer is not always better.6 -
Well after a month with Brave web browser I'm forced to go back to Firefox. It's way unstable, too many bugs and glitches and lacks some add-ons1

Needed my Windows 10 vm for parallax propeller development again. Should be pretty straightforward:
Start VM. Very unresponsive and Interface glitches with 2GB RAM so I give it 4GB to get on the desktop. Bruh, off to a good start.
Turns out that there are a few updates. So I try to install them. After two fucking hours Virtualbox screams at me for being out of storage. FFS Window$ updates managed to take up like 20GB extra.
Had to install it from scratch since my drive is full. Now my key won't activate because it is already activated. 15min support hotline, because 6*8 characters are necessary for a f*cking Phone activation.
Damage assessment:
1h of my life I will never get back, a barely viable operating system and I'm not even sure if USB passthrough works.
PSA:Gnome-Boxen has a superb unattended installer.7 -

Sooo many fucking visual and functional glitches in iOS!
Just had my Files app stuck on a file preview. Couldn’t scroll, close or share the file. Closed the app, restarted the app, opened it again with no luck.
Had to offload and reinstate the app to get it working.
Apple is making sure that I go back to Android for my next phone.
To think that such an expensive phone has so many UI/UX glitches is infuriating! I like the overall aesthetics of iOS but these glitches/bugs/whatever-the-fucks are just plain frustrating.2 -
"What language should I learn?" Wellll.

43 PERCENT Of banking systems are built on COBOL
80 PERCENT Of in-person transactions use COBOL
95 PERCENT Of ATM swipes rely on COBOL code
220 BILLION Lines of COBOL in use today
"Experienced COBOL programmers can earn more than $100 an hour when they get called in to patch up glitches, rewrite coding manuals or make new systems work with old." [1]
Found this pretty interesting/crazy.

The Odyssey of the Tenacious Tester:
Once upon a time in the digital kingdom of Binaryburg, there lived a diligent software tester named Alice. Alice was on a mission to ensure the flawless functionality of the kingdom's latest creation – the Grand Software Citadel.
The Grand Software Citadel was a marvel, built by the brilliant developers of Binaryburg to serve as the backbone of all digital endeavors. However, with great complexity came an even greater need for meticulous testing.
Alice, armed with her trusty testing toolkit, embarked on a journey through the intricate corridors of the Citadel. Her first challenge was the Maze of Edge Cases, where unexpected scenarios lurked at every turn. With a keen eye and a knack for uncovering hidden bugs, Alice navigated the maze, leaving no corner untested.
As she progressed, Alice encountered the Chamber of Compatibility, a place where the Citadel's code had to dance harmoniously with various browsers and devices. With each compatibility test, she waltzed through the intricacies of cross-browser compatibility, ensuring that the Citadel would shine on every screen.
But the true test awaited Alice in the Abyss of Load and Performance. Here, the Citadel's resilience was put to the test under the weight of simulated user hordes. Alice, undeterred by the mounting pressure, unleashed her army of virtual users upon the software, monitoring performance metrics like a hawk.
In the end, after days and nights of relentless testing, Alice emerged victorious. The Grand Software Citadel stood strong, its code fortified against the perils of bugs and glitches.
To honor her dedication, the software gods bestowed upon Alice the coveted title of Bug Slayer and a badge of distinction for her testing prowess. The testing community of Binaryburg celebrated her success, and her story became a legend shared around digital campfires.
And so, dear software testers, let the tale of Alice inspire you in your testing quests. May your test cases be thorough, your bug reports clear, and your software resilient against the challenges of the digital realm.
In the world of software testing, every diligent tester is a hero in their own right, ensuring that the digital kingdoms stand tall and bug-free. -
I am in love with WireGuard. I have been testing it and till now I haven't felt any glitches and it is so simple and feature rich VPN. https://www.wireguard.com

Worst dev disaster?
Welp, my now 6 year old Mac keeps sending signal to my monitors that in my experience regardless of OS generally says "my video card is gonna fuckin die soon".
I've re-installed the Windows partition like 3 times, but that responds to the video card problems so bad it pretty much just BSODs... but the Mac side soldiers on, just occasionally having weird visual glitches. Thats fine, I work on the Mac side.
And I don't really want to spend a shit ton on a new computer... but I do want a Mac, so I'm gonna spend a shit ton.
So now I have to decide if I can hold out for an M1 or if I should just shell like thousands for a Mac that will be out of date in like 4 months. After which for development purposes I'd still have to buy at least the M1 dev kit Mac Mini.
All of which hinges on this effing video card lasting another few months.
Because if it doesn't I'm going to have to use my kids 8GB fuckin HP laptop as my main dev machine while I get another Mac in the mail and that would fucking suck not to mention the like minimum two days sleep I'd lose just setting up the required local environments I'd need... not to mention I'd have to do all that in Windows... so I'd have to find Windows equivalents for all my dev tools. Or fuck it, maybe I could just install Putty and server cowboy everything... but it would still suck.
And, of course, I don't have time to do any of that because I have the normal like 2 tight deadlines on shit.
The next few months of my life, potentially my ability to earn a living, potentially my sanity...
Hangs on the health of a fucking six year old heavily abused video card.9 -
I hate how people who’ve never written a line of code complain about video game developers....I’m going to school for CS and a friend of mine is in school for Game Development and from our combined knowledge of how the shit works, it just pisses me off when people complain about how they want new stuff in there games but than complain about bugs and glitches in the game. Like motherfucker it’s essentially a program, if your bitch ass wants new contents with no bugs make it your damn self.6

Note to AltRant testers:
1. Tomorrow, I am going to force-expire build 1583 (the big update with the weekly group rant support) in favor of the build with the bugfix (mentioned here: https://devrant.com/rants/5888282) for consistency and for more up-to-date crash reports/feedback.
2. Limited macOS support is coming extremely soon, I will post a comment here in order to notify you about the added support. I believe the same TestFlight link is going to work for both macOS and iOS. NOTE: I haven't invested too much time with polishing the experience for macOS, so there will be bugs, there will be layout glitches and there will be compromises. I am well aware of all macOS issues but I just want to release something and then fix it along the way.1 -
Is there a Linux distribution without a lot of problems with Nvidia drivers? I'm currently using elementary os, because I like the look of it, but I'm getting a lot of graphical glitches and black screens all the time and I was wondering if changing to another distro would help. Is elementary is known for graphical glitches, or is it just the Nvidia drivers? I've also turned my display manager into a mess while trying to customise my login screen, so it might be a good time to change to another distribution. Any recommendations? And one more thing, just out of curiosity, can you install multiple distributions and use the same home directory if home is mounted on a separate partition?15

New AltRant release!
Release Notes:
- Transitioned to URLCache-based caching solution for attached images for much faster loading times
- Fixed many layout issues
- Finally added "more info" button in profile screen after 2 years of the feature being absent from the app
- Fixed many different crashes
- Added rant refreshing
- Added double tap to upvote on rants and comments
- Added creation date/time indicators on rants and comments
- Added comment count indicator in post cells in feeds
All users are required to test every aspect of the app.
I worked really hard on all of this to improve every single aspect of this app - from responsiveness to crashes and layout glitches, while also adding many features that were absent for a crazy amount of time! Please enjoy!
The last build will expire in a week from now.4 -
When my Firefox window is too narrow devRant completely shits all over itself and glitches so hard that rants cannot be scrolled anymore unless I make the window larger and go apeshit on the scrollbar until it fixes itself again.

Question:
For a real time chat (web) app. Whats the best technology to use for this? I dont want the chats to have delays or glitches (in case it gets sent but not delivered etc).
Backend stack is java spring boot
How about kafka? Or rabbitmq? Or socket.io? Should i use redis? Should i use AWS SQS? Talking about cloud what AWS tools should i be using to handle this the best way?
Note: it must be scalable. Meaning if i wanted to extend this software more by building a mobile app (aside from web), i should be able to use the same backend easily
Note 2: it is not ONLY a chat app. Chatting is just 1 out of many functionalities. So chatting is not the main component of the project just a side thing
Keep in mind the backend is a microservice architecture etc. Database postgresql.13 -
There are couple of ui glitches after update on iphone 7 and new ios.
Mainly with keyboard hiding tags or add image button.

Start my code day, no bugs in sight,
Each line I write, like code's delight.
Second function, errors suppressed,
Silent fixes, my skills put to the test.
Third loop, logic numb, yet breaking,
A contradiction in every line I'm making.
Fourth bug, clinging like a leech,
In the grip of coding's caffeine breach.
Fifth syntax, thoughtless actions cascade,
A program's dance, in lines arrayed.
Sixth compile, colleagues say, 'Go home,'
But where's home in this code dome?
'They say home is where the heart is,
But my heart's in a million logic twists,
Which line shall I follow?
The optimized or the broken,
I cannot tell them apart.'
In the last bit of code, I saved my hope,
When debugging was still an option,
So go ahead and save yourself from glitches,
For you are worthy of a million exceptions. -
It's so frustrating to explain rxjs pitfalls to the manager.
To avoid the diamond problems and glitches caused by combineLatest and debounceTime(0), I decided to use single stream with nested reactivity.
Then the manager asked me to use withLatestFrom instead of combineLatest.
Sure withLatestFrom makes sense to the original author, when the original author is able to remember the reactive graph and put proper dependencies to combineLasted/withLatestFrom accordingly, but anyone else who touches the component later needs to retrace the reactive graph to avoid the glitch. Sometimes it's just impossible when many dependencies are derived from combineLatest+debounceTime(0). When no one is trained to code reactively, I don't expect people to know where to put a dependency. After many trials and errors, the only way to avoid the diamond problem is to use nested reactivity where child streams are created within root stream each time root stream emits.
The mentioned manager put all sorts of side effects in observable chains. The manager keeps saying the stream is too large when their subscription functions (sometimes nested) are way worse with litered mutations everywhere. Anything in observable can be traced by go to definition but tracing side effects usually requires global searches.
Recently, he put startWith to the end of a synced stream to fix a bug where button would collapse when there is no content (initial null emission). Rather than fixing the default height, he thinks using startWith(defaultLabel) is a good idea. Of course, he doesn't know that a synced stream should only emit 1 value on new subscription and that extra emitted value will cause rxjs glich down the pipe.
I hate corporate jobs -
So here is a mini rant from an amateur/hobbyist developer (me).
Over the past week, I've taken on a project that is much larger than any other projects i've attempted to handle (steam trading bot). This meant that there would be logic flaws, weird bugs due to unexpected behavior from shitty web apis (and their poor documentation hmmmm).
Anyhow, fast forward a few days and the code is complete. It's mostly functional, apart from a few glitches and unexpected behavior here and there...or so i thought. Apparently if someone trades and item to me that isnt in my pricegrid, the bot freaks out and kills itself, relaunches, and repeats this cycle (pm2). And i only found out about this on my way to school
So in desperation to fix such a critical flaw in my code (if my bot breaks a lot and doesnt accept trades, i can get banned from backpack.tf), i bust out my only device which is my phone, and start editing away (JuiceSSH and turbo client is godsend ty). 30 minutes later, after toiling through code with no indentation or syntax highlights (mobile pls), ive fixed it. So i push to live and alls well.
Then I arrive at school, pull out my laptop and decided to check up on my code to see if anything needs fixing.
Oh look in one line i used '||' instead of '&&'.
ok lets fix it.
ok lets push to live again.
I launched WinSCP to move the files onto the server, and just as the loading bar finishes and the file is overwritten, i realized; FUCK the code i had on my laptop wasnt the latest version i just worked on on my phone.
So that's that. 30 minutes of typing code without indentation and syntax highlighting on a 5 inch screen and it's all gone.
TLDR:
Version control is a must. -
For all you amateur web developers out there: What made you want to start making websites?
Was it just a hobby that you decided to pick up, or did you want to pursue it as a career?7 -
One night, deep within one of those YouTube rabbit holes-you know, the ones where you progress from video to video until you already can't remember what you were searching for-well, I found myself stuck in crypto horror stories. I have watched people share how they lost access to their Bitcoin wallets, be it through hacks, forgotten passwords, glitches in software, or mislaid seed phrases. Some of the stupid mistakes made me laugh; others were devastating losses. At no point did I think I would be the next story. Literally the next morning, I tried to get to my wallet like usual, but found myself shut out. First, I assumed it was some sort of minor typo, but after multiple attempts-anything I could possibly do with the password-I realized that something had gone very wrong. $400,000 in Bitcoin was inside that wallet. I tried not to panic. Instead, I went back over my steps, checked my saved credentials, even restarted my device. Nothing worked. The laughter from last night's videos felt like a cruel joke now. This wasn't funny anymore. It was then that I remembered: One of the videos on YouTube spoke about Cranix Ethical Solutions Haven. It was some dude who lost his crypto in pretty similar circumstances. He swore on their expertise; I was out of options and reached out to them. From the very moment I contacted them, their staff was professional, patient, and very knowledgeable indeed. I told them my case, and then they just went ahead and introduced me to the plan. They reassured me that they have dealt with cases similar to this-and that I wasn't doomed as I felt. Over the course of a few days, they worked on meticulously analyzing all security layers around my wallet, checking for probable failure points, and reconstructing lost credentials with accuracy and expertise. Then came the call that changed everything: “Your funds are safe. You’re back in.” I can’t even put into words the relief I felt at that moment. Cranix Ethical Solutions Haven didn’t just restore my wallet—they restored my sanity. I walked away from this experience with two important lessons:
1. Never, ever neglect a wallet backup.
2. If disaster strikes, Cranix Ethical Solutions Haven is the only name you need to remember.
If you're reading this and thinking, "That would never happen to me," I used to think the same thing. Until it did.

RECOVER SCAMMED USDT AND BTC WITH THE HELP OF SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL
It was one of those nights: scrolling through crypto Twitter, keeping up to date with the markets, and laughing at the memes. That's when a thread about common wallet screwups came up. Guys were sharing their worst crypto nightmares-forgotten passwords, lost seed phrases, hacks, and software glitches. I read through it, thinking, "Yikes, that sucks… glad that's not me." A few hours later, I became the next horror story. I had been meaning to update my wallet software for a while, and with the thread fresh in my mind, I figured, why not now? I followed the update instructions carefully, or so I thought. But the moment this update finished, I tried to log in, and boom—access denied. I stared at the screen, my heart pounding. I checked my password again, and again, and once more. Nothing. I tried restarting my laptop. Nothing still. Then it hit me-something had gone horribly wrong, and I was locked out of my wallet. In there was $250,000 worth of Bitcoin. Immediately, panic set in. I had done everything right! How could an update just shut me out? I searched online for solutions, and the more I read, the more hopeless it sounded. That's when I remembered the thread. Someone had tagged SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL . I had nothing to lose, so I looked up their contact information and reached out. Within minutes, I got a response, and their team was so calm, professional, and reassuringly incredible. They asked for the details of my situation and straightaway started their assessment. Days passed, really nervous ones, while SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL kept updating me step by step. Their expertise was unreal. They unraveled the mess that the update had created, bypassed the login issue, and restored my access. As I finally saw my balance sitting safely in my wallet again, I almost fainted with relief. It served as a lesson to me that I will carry for the rest of my life: updates can be dangerous, and Twitter is good for more than just memes. If I hadn't seen that thread, I might have never found SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL in time. If you ever find yourself in some crypto nightmare, don't waste your time panicking. Just call SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL . They don't only fix problems; they save financial futures.

This wasn't funny anymore. It was then that I remembered: One of the videos on YouTube spoke about WIZARD WEB RECOVERY SERVICES . Then came the call that changed everything: “Y didn’t just restore my wallet—they restored my sanity. I walked away from this exodus funds are safe. You’re back in.” I can’t even put into words the relief I felt at that moment. WIZARD WEB RECOVERY SERVICES patience with two important lessons:
1. Never, ever neglect a wallet backup.
2. If disaster strikes, WIZARD WEB RECOVERY SERVICES is the only name you need to remember.
If you're reading this and thinking, "That would never happen to me," I used to think the same thing. Until it did.

HIRE ADWARE RECOVERY SPECIALIST FOR YOUR LOST CRYPTO RECOVERY SERVICE
Investing with Bitcex turned out to be an experience I deeply regret. At first, everything seemed promising. The platform appeared professional, and the trading opportunities looked legitimate. However, the true nature of Bitcex became evident when I attempted to withdraw my funds. After weeks of trading, I submitted a withdrawal request for $10,000 worth of Ethereum, expecting a smooth transaction. Instead, my account was suddenly closed, and all the cryptocurrency I had deposited vanished without explanation. WhatsApp info:+12723 328 343 Every time I contacted their customer support, I was met with excuses. They claimed there were delays due to technical glitches or compliance issues, but nothing ever materialized. At one point, they even assured me the funds would be transferred soon, but this was just another empty promise. Frustrated, I continued to call their office repeatedly, hoping for a resolution. Initially, they answered, but their responses became increasingly dismissive and unprofessional. Eventually, they stopped taking my calls altogether, leaving me in the dark. Losing $10,000 worth of Ethereum was devastating, and the emotional toll of being scammed was overwhelming. Determined not to give up, I began searching for a solution. During my research, I came across a financial recovery service called ADWARE RECOVERY SPECIALIST.
