Hello, I just want to let you know I'm working on a 15 year old product and it is currently in production.
It uses Angular.js and one of the earliest versions of React.js. I cannot use ES6, we don't have Babel, no JSX syntax, no CSS preprocessor. No webpack.
I must support browser since IE6 with an ES3 syntax. (luckily I got some some polyfills for an ES5 syntax)
When I build a component I have to call React.createClass and React.createElement.
The render() function is basically a nested pile of React.createElement.
There is no documentation for this product, no tests, no anything.
I had to reverse engineer it in order to understand how it works.
The code base uses mixed programming styles and naming conventions, plus thousands of little js files.
Oh and obviously no hot reload, every time I make a change I have to restart everything.
Please, send help.

If you're currently in college and wish to get placed in a major tech giant like Amazon or Facebook:
Don't learn React.js, instead learn Linked lists.
Don't learn Flutter, instead learn Binary search trees.
Don't learn how to perform secure Authorization with JWTs, instead learn how to recursively reverse a singly linked list.
Don't learn how to build scalable and fault tolerant web servers, instead learn how to optimally inverse a binary search tree.
These big tech companies don't really care what real world development technologies you've mastered. Your competence in competitive programming and data structures is all that matters.

So I've been doing work for a big ass real estate firm. Managing work of their 12 websites. A month ago they sent a prototype built with React.js which their design agency did. What we did was creating a backend API and an administration area and hooked the prototype to make it dynamic.
Everything was working quite great but around 2-3 days ago their guy who had been looking over the work of this React.js website came up and said that it isn't working in Internet Explorer 11. Bastard didn't mention this earlier throughout the whole month when we had provided him access to a staging server. I coldly replied that the prototype was provided by their design agency. But today the fucker put it all on us and said that it is something we implemented that caused this issue. I had to do some research but I finally managed to run the website in IE11. Bastard tried to steal my weekend.
Fuck IE11, fuck such pig clients, fuck Microsoft. IE, just DIE already you syphilis infected piece of whore's ass! -

Well over the years there is one thing that lasts and those are established standards.
Those things move slowly and obviously don’t keep up with innovation but on the other hand same companies that make those innovative tools that go high develop standards that not always are in tact with already developed frameworks.
So frameworks come and go and give some abilities before standards are established.
It might be unpopular opinion but it is how the world works. Humans are replaceable and die but standardized products are something that lasts for ages.3 -

Someone wanted to get a job, he was told to build a fullstack webapp with node.js and react.js and he told me to review his code before submission. I saw the code and the guy wrote the models, controllers and routes in one file, ONE FILE FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!!

I was minding my own business, fixing merge conflicts for my project lead when it struck.

So when are all of you going to admit that React.js is useless? It's awful and miserable and doesn't do anything it promises to.
It's not faster to write code, it's not cleaner, it's not easier, it's just a ton of boilerplate and it can't even handle simple animations.

I know HTML, CSS, and JS (self-taught), and at present, I am spending time on React.js.

I have my first developer interview next week. I'm really nervous. Its an interview for both a front end role and a php backend role, and they are hiring 9 developers.
I'm a full stack developer, dot net core backend and learning React.js frontend. My html and CSS knowledge is fine but I don't quite have a grasp of js yet. As for php, I know nothing, but the recruiter said they are looking to train someone and I explained that I enjoy learning, not to mention php is very popular so it's a good tool to have knowledge with.
I've been told to look at their site, so I've written a list of about ten aspects of the site that I like and that I would change. From the lack of interactivity to images being larger than necessary, something that could be optimised.
The interview will be an hour and a half long and I'm shitting myself. Im not a confident person as is, plus I suffer from anxiety. I'm mostly worried about being put on the spot with questions like "tell me your best achievement". I will rehearse the obvious questions this weekend.
Doss anyone have any advice? Good experiences, bad experiences etc.7 -

JavaScript development turns into more and more of a shitshow over time. Not that it was great at the beginning, but with each passing year it gets worse.
There are now 17 versions of Node.js, 18 versions of React.js, 3 major versions of Vue.js... Each version brings something new and no one is in a rush to update their stuff to be compatible with the latest version of the framework2 -
What are the most common used technologies in workplaces around you?
Everywhere here I see an endless sea of .NET with ocassional streams of Java and some islands of php on IIS or Apache on the server, with ASP/JSP or Angular and jQuery on the client side.
Workstations are 100% Windows(10 or 7, with some legacy XP here and there).
Also most servers run Windows or some Unix version. Linux only for web servers and various system appliances.
Node.js, Ruby on rails, Django/Flask, React.js,Vue.js, Mac/Linux endpoints are only rarely used by fringe hipsters like me and my friends.3 -
For the first time in my life, I feel good about myself.
In 3 years since I finished my Software Engineering BSc, I made some progress;
I learned React.js, and got into MobX team doing open source.
I learned ClojureScript and RoR and feel comfortable with them.
I do dev tasks and maintenance tasks myself, and enjoy them.

Why is React.js so hard to learn for someone from a JAVA back end background? I'm constantly asking myself "so should I set param as string? or int? Array? so many methods that's returning html tags! what collects all and makes it appear at WHERE??"9

I’m so sorry if this is the place for questions. I’m terrified of stack overflow and have been searching for a week for a solution and can’t find one. This is for React.js people.
I was tasked to create a webpage with react. The limitation is, they did not wanna adopt the node.js dependency. I said ok, I’ll figure it out. You can inject react, material UI, and babel with script tags in HTML, then put ur lil components in it. I did that and it works beautifully.
However, now I have to write tests for this. I think it’s actually impossible without a way to render React, so I have to use the browser, or node, right? I convinced my boss to allow me to use a node.js container just for testing, which I thought would make my life easier.
I don’t know how to render this thing with node. It’s just an HTML file that pulls react via script tags, and idk how to serve html with node. Additionally, none of the React testing libraries seem to support testing a system that wasn’t designed to be served with node, at least not easily. My gut tells me that the complication with how things are imported contributes at least a little to this (dependencies pulled via script tags in the HTML file and made available to react through global const variables).
I could be wrong about any of this — im fairly new. But how tf do I go about testing these react components? For reference, if you go to Reacts docs, there’s a section called “add react to a page in one minute” that’s pretty much what I did.20 -
We need to create simple form for colection few particular people data for some bounty programme.
We have ready-made website that does similar stuff, but it was outsourced and we have compiled javascript (sidenote - im only person in this place who understands f**ng javascript but hates it deeply)
Anyway, they come to me, and say that creating this google doc will take them few minutes and it seems that editing few divs in the site and creating second one with another subdomain will do the trick.
I tell them that it will take a lot of time to reverse engeneer that compiled react.js website to change few divs. But they insist.
So we start out, I pop up the terminal, copy over site, add nginx config for it, apply SSL to it, we are already good 5-10 minutes in, first roadblock - CORS. At this point I tell them that with google form they would be already done.

So been doing a freelance project for the past week, small backend API with a front-end, thought I'll give react.js a shot and actually learn it (know a bit of the basics) so using MERN including tailwindcss.
Built the API in a few days, quick and easy. Down to react, not going to lie. Once you dive into it, it's really nice to use. Just tackled a contact form and a few dynamic pages using props, state etc today. Now onto the rest of the site including the the Dashboard to CRUD records.
Still have a lot to learn. But given what I've learned so far. Don't see it taking too much longer.

What exactly is a full-stack developer/engineer? I'm confused.
So, I worked as a freelance webdev for a US company where I redesigned a pretty complicated website from scratch with PHP, mysql, JavaScript, CSS, HTML5. I only mention those because it will important later.
Basically, it's a lame mvc framework I wrote which heavily relied on AJAX and bootstrap modals.
I built from mysql <=> PHP -> UI
I Also built an android app that communicates with the php api
I worked for 4.6 years and they were kind enough to give me the designation "Full Stack Engineer" so I could put that on my resume. Alright, cool.
Then I go to this interview and one interviewer took offense. He told me that, there are 3 tiers of web dev; Database, Backend shit and UI. And I'm not a full-stack engineer. He then asked me if I worked with frameworks like laravel, symphony etc. [I did but not in this project]. I didn't know what to say. The other interviewer tried to help me, "Do you know what it means? Or have you ever worked with React.js or Angular?".
Didn't get the job and I'm so embarrassed and just feel like I'm a fraud. How could I not know what full-stack is? And why did I put it in my resume? Fuck!
Anyway can anyone tell me what "full- stack *" is?

I’m 20 years old MERN (Mongodb, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) Stack Developer, Working in a start up as a full time employee. They’re paying me 20k (INR) (< $300)/month. I’m in 2nd year of my college for my Bachelor’s Degree in computer Science. My Job is work from home. I’m doing programming for 4 years now. I have 1 year full time experience and extra 6 months internship in the same company and also doing freelance for 1 year. I’ve worked on many technologies like AWS, Azure, GCP, React, Tailwindcss, Flutter, Node.js, Express.js, Docker, Vercel, Linux and keep learning things cause I love doing this. But I think my salary is too low, I work 6 days/ week. They promised me that they’ll increase my salary but I don’t think they will. I think there is a lot I can achieve but nothing I can see right now. I’m not comparing myself to anyone but I think I’m eligible to get good food and good Education cause I’m paying for everything (College, food, etc). Family is not supporting after I started earning. Can a React.JS expert help me to understand something?
In short, I would like to know what are the main differences between react version 15.6 and 17, in terms of browser issues, and component compatibility?
We have a legacy code base that is in version 15.6 and the team wants to upgrade it and I am attempting to argue with my dumb CTO to upgrade to version 17. However, I’m not versed in react, I'm just a PO and the CTO doesn't know anything but for some odd reason is adamant about staying on an older version. The developers gave me their opinion but I'm interested in an outside opinion.5 -

I recently started with react.js. But I didn't like the idea of nesting components. I know this is too early to talk about it. I'm not halfway through tutorials. But I'm loosing motivation to learn react.js
This never happened to me. I learned few frameworks in past. Django and codeigniter. They follow MVC/MVT architecture. And writing code in it looks cleaner and simpler.
In react JSX is confusing at first. You have to read same line twice or thrice to understand. I'm not saying JSX is bad, but it's not readable enough.
In early lessons I learnt that in react everything is component. And every component comes under one root component. Don't you guys think this well get messy for large application. You are dealing with number of nested components from one file into another.
I'm not against react. But the way react is forcing you to write code, is not something I enjoy. Let me know your thoughts. Maybe I'll get some kinda booster to continue react.1 -
