Never gonna happen:
* Port our API to graphql. Or even make it just vaguely rest-compliant. Or even just vaguely consistent.
* Migrate from mysql to postgres. Or any sane database.
* Switch codebase from PHP to... well, anything else.
* Teach coworkers to not commit passwords, API keys, etc.
* Teach coworkers to write serious commit messages instead of emoji spam
* Get a silent work environment.
* Get my office to serve better snacks than fermented quinoa spinach bars and raw goat milk kale smoothies
* Find an open source IDE with good framework magic support. Jetbrains, I'll give you my left testicle if you join the light side of the force.
* Buy 2x3 equally sized displays. I'm using 6, but they're various sizes/resolutions.
* Master Rust.
* Finish building my house. I completely replaced the roof, but still have to dig out a cellar (to hide my dead coworkers).
* Repair/replace the foundation of my house (I think Rust is easier)
* Get slim and muscular.
Realistically:
* Get a comfortable salary increase, focus more on platform infrastructure, data design, coaching
* Get fat(ter). Eating, sitting, gaming, coding and sleeping are my hobbies after all.
* Save up for the inevitable mental breakdown-induced retirement.13 -
I'd post my wk200 goals, but my project manager is still busy gathering requirements for it and creating the epics.1
-
Why does everyone enjoy being pantless? I for one find it uncomfortable. One of the reasons I also struggle with wearing shorts at summer time.
Do you really work pantless? Sit on a couch/chair but in your undies?
Srsly....?13 -
4pm and the neighbour starts drilling.
Excuse me lovely neighbour, some of us have late meetings to attend 🤷♂️
I got asked if i was on a motorcycle. 🤣6 -
First time working remote.
My manager sent us all remote. I am a student in apprenticeship with a school doing remote work too.
I caught a slight diharrea, doing some C in the WC.
Is this distubing if I find myself more productive on the toilet ? xD8 -
I hate school, but I wish I finished collage…
Just to imagine all the free time I had, I if I had it now I would do so much... But I left and Got employed, and now I have to watch myself getting fucked over salary wise and not learning anything new at work. Constantly being called junior just makes me wish I stayed in school. And use the extra time to do my own company
So if I had the chance , I'd go back... But I have bills to pay! (Sad)9 -
No line for the bathroom. Listening to music without headphones. Getting up and pacing around like a crazy person when I'm thinking. Cursing loudly. Not wearing pants. Petting my dog frequently.
WFH is the best5 -
My job forces me to work 9-6 with a one hour lunch. Since I am forced to be full time wfh, I eat while working and take a nap during my "lunch".
I am much more productive.5 -
1. I don't have to use headphones to listen to music. Can listen in speakers and avoid my ears being sweaty
2. No random interruptions from anyone. Interruptions are usually from slack messages and emails which I can decide when to look at
3. Have a solid 1 or 2 hours for coding (because of the above 2 reasons)
4. The time spent in commuting is instead spent on nap or relaxing -
100 weeks is ~ 2 years away.
It will be year 2020 then, the year i thought about in highschool 8 years ago wondering what I'd do then since 2020 sounded like a cool number.
It's time to write a letter to my future self.
Dear holodreamer ( version 2020 ),
This is your old version speaking from 2018. I see that you have upgraded to a better version of myself. I see that you are finally financially independent and preparing to move out to somewhere peaceful and better. According to my calculations, you should be feeling pressure from your family and relatives to get married. Looking from my perspective, it seems you had other plans than to settle for relationship this year, like traveling the world, being in the snow, mountains and living an adventurous lifestyle. I want you to know I'm proud of you if you are following though those goals.
Btw, do you remember that random muslim girl you met on the internet 110 weeks ago? Is she still in contact with you every day?! I hope not. Is she still super religious? She was a good chat buddy for me, a great alternative to a chatbots at my time but I hope you didn't get carried away with her and I hope you don't have to resort to chatbots to cure loneliness.
Did AI replace developers? Is JavaScript still the most popular programming language?
I'm waiting for your response.
Best wishes,
holodreamer (version 2018)2 -
1. Would have learned Android app development using Kotlin by wk 200
2. Done with machine learning by wk200
3. Would upload my own apps on google play store.
4. Buy a new laptop with my own earned money.7 -
[wk200]
Ordered a set of copic markers, they should be here tomorrow. At least this quarantine crap gives me time to draw again after 5 years.4 -
No commute.. oh, wait, I live next to work..like literally next building.. ok, if I move it'd be no commute again..
No need to brush the hair, can wear yoga pants & hoodie & swear all I want.. oh, I do that even at the office (trying to tone down on swearing though)..Umm.. boss doesn't get to tell me to go home at 17.. well he does that even now.. o.O ok ok, I got this!! I can wash my hair during lunch break! And wash the dishes and clothes when on 'cig break'..
Meh... I wish I had a doggo to play with.. :(6 -
Music volume, doing your laundry during builds, have an entire kitchen to yourself, no boss can proof that you watched a Anime while waiting for a build, nobody can seek up on you. That's pretty much the most important things.8

What I Like about Home Office?
My squeaky clean toilet. No colleagues who Block the toilet, no colleagues who seem to forget their bathroom cleanliness at home -
Things to get done by wk200:
- Finish B.Sc.
- Do Intership at Intel
- Get M.Sc. Scholarship from Stanford.
I know it's a bit big, but you have reach for the stars.2 -
I save about 2h commute (so 4h/day) which is nice.
Also not constantly getting interrupted by colleagues1 -
I'm working from here @ShereHills mountain top. Got my mac and testing device on point, I don't think the virus can come this high.3
-
#1 Sharing co-working space with my wife.
#2 my home office! (I transitioned from music industry work into data science over the last few years)8 -
What I wish to achieve before wk200? For sure learning Rust properly and possibly D. Not going to lie though, I also have quite a few projects deserving a rewrite...
-
Well that's it folks,
Australia has started to shutdown and become the isolated island it once was again, even more so with states shutting down independently.
Atleast we have the intern -
fuck, got to reboot the modem... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
where was i, oh yea -
internet right? It's not like the NBN wasn't designed to have every fucking Aussie using it at once or anything 🙄
https://abc.net.au/news/2020-03-22/...rant covid19 wk200 aussies don't do isolation well shutting down the nation nbn won't handle this shit5 -
My school is yet to decide what form of online schooling we'll use, but I've prepared in case it'll be live video conferences. ( I can freeze my webcam and I fixed my BT headphones, so I can do stuff during classes and reply from anywhere in the house in case I'm posed a question. )1
-
Definitely to finish my thesis. I now force myself to do at least a small part per day. At some day it will be such a natural part of my day that it will just write itself (hopefully).
But wk200 is a little late goal, I want to finish it this year ~wk130
Never give up, people. -
Being more comfortable in general.
Also, snacks.
Also, coding in bed.
Furthermore, monitor setup is better. -
Fav part of working from home?
Probably nothing.
- Being within eye-shot of my wife.
Wife: "Since your home just sitting there, could you clean the windows?"
Me: "I can't, busy."
Wife: "You're just sitting there clicking, that's not working. You think *I* sit around all day!? Let me tell you what I do all day for you and your children <blah blah blah>.. I ask you to do *one* thing around here, only *one*, and you can't do that! "
I'll inevitably will be doing anything except coding.
- Being within eye-shot of my daughter
H: "Daddy, can you play this game with me?"
<Hmmm...SharePoint or Candyland?>
Me: "Alright baby, let's play Candyland!"
Actually, being home with my girls would be pretty awesome. :)2 -
Before wk200 roles around I'd like to finish my little indie game. I'm using unity to create it and it's the first game I've ever made. It's been taking me a while but I'm hopeful.
Also happy wk100!4 -
Here's to the last time I'll see the office for a month.
I guess I'm on the WFH bandwagon now 🍻rant less distractions less screens i haven't done this in years working from home tips / advice anyone covid-19 wk200 who knows this might work2 -
sleeping in.
I love sleep.
but I hate phone calls, though those are inevitable. prob the worst part. -
Bought myself a standing desk (one that rests on top of an existing desk), a new chair with good lumbar support and a few other office bits and pieces before the end of the tax year in the UK. I didn't think I'd be able to put them through my Ltd Co next year because of IR35 changes, but they have been delayed now.
The only thing I don't have yet at home is dual monitors. Otherwise the setup feels great. 30 Mins sitting followed by 30 Mins standing is doing wonders for my old back2 -
Goals:
-> Write clean code
-> Never trust the code
-> Never use PHP
-> Stop procastinating
-> Stop ranting3 -
Goals before wk200:
0. Get the hell out of this Geophysics faculty and transfer to Computer science faculty in university which I was dreaming of since I was high school freshman.
1. Meet my girlfriend. (I'm in long distance relationship and there's a huge ocean between us).
2. Get to be able to learn probability in Math so I can understand AI topic.
3. Get better money from my amazon business.
4. Get better sleep.
5. Stop being so scared of dentists and go fucking fix my tooth that hurts.
6. Lose weight.
7. Don't buy video-games that I'm not going to play after a week and forget about it.
8. Listen to the Math lectures.
9. Stop feeling the need to kiss the girl that sits next to me in university (Which is by the way my BFF ).
That's all I can think of yet.5 -
100 weeks is a long time, and I'm not even sure I'm gonna survive! But my roughly estimate is by:
- wk125; I've managed to live on my savings; Because I'll (try to) finish any project and just focus on my thesis.
- wk150; I've defended my thesis. Now I apply for PhD and get rejected.
- wk175; Begging for my last job to get hired again.
- wk200; Thanking myself for not buying bitcoins back then.
Probably I'll also manage to learn Go somewhere there.2 -
The main benefit of an office environment for me is - conversely - the best part of working from home. It's super useful to be able to just summon someone for a 7 minute pair programming session, but i have a much greater focus at home when I know I won't be interrupted during work hours.
This whole situation is definitely making me want to work more from home and I'll probably try to make it a regular occasional thing in the future.1 -
Didn’t shower. Didn’t fix my hair. Wasn’t asked a hundred questions that could have been easily Googled. Got to chill with my one-year-old while waiting for Magento 2 to reindex. Lovin’ it.
-
Sometimes I get inspiration for pole choreos, so I can take a break to try it out. I don't even have to change from my pole outfit1
-
*when forced work from home started*
Boss: look guys, since we aren't gonna be in the office we need to prioritize communication and fully utilize Slack, email, and company phones.
*today at 4pm when release is supposed to happen*
Boss: *crickets*
*1 hour later*
Boss: *crickets*
Me: what's going on with the release?
Coworker: QA found something late breaking we're trying to roll it back.
*1 hour later*
Work: *crickets*
*Release is 3 hours late and it's an hour after quitting time*
Work: *crickets* -
I have a 3 monitor setup at home. 2 are used for coding, 1 for playing Netflix/YouTube as "background entertainment".
-
I forgot how fast my office pc was until my laptop at home grade synced and built my project for a full minute!!!!3
-
Anti-fav maybe
Nothing changed for me. The problem now is I can't go out as much.... And somehow I'm slacking off less...
Might have something to do with manager now expects everyone to be in at 9... So that means I gotta get up at 8...
Usually wfh I get in a 9:30 no questions asked... U know 30 mins for coffee, bathroom etc...
Now I gotta make an effort to at least login...
I feel like taking a sick day but now those seem scary too since they'll think I might've caught the virus... -
It gives me a break from the kids. But the cost of that is increased strain on my poor wife, and knowing that that sucks all the joy out of it.2
-
having absolute control over my environment. if i want to be in bed, i'm in bed. if i want to take a 45 minute bath listening to podcast because i got stuck on a problem, I do. if I want to grab something to eat, i do.
etc. -
first experience:
Crucial touchpoint with product owners;
- me doing my business on the toliet
- me cleaning up
- me brushing my teeth
** Yes I agree! That feature could****brushbrush****take some time to ***brushbrush*** do** -
I can use my clicky mechanical keyboard. Mmmmm those blue switches feel good. Also my home monitor setup is better3
-
My goals before we reach wk200...
-continue/finish my education
-move together with my girlfriend
-get a decent work if I already finished my education3 -
Not dev related though, but now that I'm in my last semester in MBA, I'm thinking of going for a double major and doing masters in something else also related to business, say.. MIS?
Any thoughts?1 -
WFH gives me a legit reason to splurge and upgrade my pc: "using a VPN connection to remote into my workstation is less than ideal for development, Dear; I should really upgrade my memory and storage if I'm going to be developing at home for while. I assure you this has nothing to do with gaming or dicking around with virtualization."3
-
I'm a college student; and unfortunately still need to go to college each day, however my commute is soo much faster without all the rush hour traffic. It's actually crazy1
-
I'm not a fan. Harder to collaborate and discuss things with coworkers. I'm constantly fighting the urge to turn towards my gaming pc and start playing something. I only have one monitor instead of the 2 I have in the office. I suffer from depression and the social isolation will definitely exacerbate that. The commute to my office is less than 15 minutes so I'm barely saving any time there. Pretty much the only benefit for me is not needing headphones to listen to music.1

[best part of wfh]
Absolutely nothing, i have great equipment at the office, my colleagues are my friends and we have a chef who cooks great food. At home the only good part is that i have my ps4 but i use my vita at work so its not a huge pro.3 -
Not sure if it is a fav, but counting the number of times each day my other half mentally strangles me. I think it is going up more rapidly than the number of coronavirus cases.
-
My fav part of working from home is that I don't have to inhale the pollution and dust of the city. I also hate how pathetic the footpaths here are.

Reply to my 2018 version: https://devrant.com/rants/1346392/...
Dear holodreamer ( version 2018 ),
I'm just glad that I'm still alive now. You won't believe how terrible 2020 is at the moment! Anyways, a lot has happened since you wrote me and I'm gonna reply it all to you.
Thanks for noticing. I really like my hairstyle now and my insecurity of going bald have gone. I couldn't be more happy.
Unfortunately, I'm not financially independent yet. Thanks to the crypto crash, the crypto ban in the country and some bad calls on my end. :/. But the good news is that we are back on the crypto market as the ban has been lifted recently. I don't have enough crypto to buy a lambo or go to the moon, but I have something that I could give to my grand kids. At this point, I don't really care anymore how much the value it is going to be, I have come to learn to think them of as a souvenir.
Your prediction of me preparing to move out of country seems to have come true. Honestly, I had given up that dream, but thanks to one of my best friend for reigniting those dreams - I may be moving somewhere really better by next year. I hope that I get this financial independence thing figured out before I move there. I don't wanna live there paycheck to paycheck.
Fortunately, I'm not getting any pressure to get married yet. I think I'm heading the way to a better life filled with some travel and adventures. I had a great opportunity to attend Google I/O 2020, but it got cancelled. Hopefully, covid19 will be over in few months.
Yea, I remember her. I got really carried away to the point that things she said started to hurt my heart. But eventually we had some argument and we stopped talking last September and I cut all contacts with her on the new years. If it makes you feel any better, last time i checked, she looks quite plumpy and totally different.
Thankfully, I'm not that lonely to need a chat bot. But I found some good online friends. They are fun to talk to.
No, AI didn't replace developers yet. Calm down! Javascript seems to be the most popular programming language now. But I hear there is a new contender to JavaScript that could change everything. It's called WebAssembly. Maybe in few years, we will see the decline of JavaScript.
Thinking about you, I feel some guilt for wasting your potential. I could have done much better if I was little more careful and responsible with you. I don't wanna make 2022 version of me feel bad for me.
Regards,
holodreamer ( version 2020 ) -
When I need to go and open my bowels, I don't have to go up and down stairs, trying to find a toilet with a vacant stall.
Although when the schools close, I will probably have the same problem at home. -
What sucks in wfh setup is there are so many attendance to fill out. Then there’s this tracker that I forgot to time out, then updated it the other day getting the current date time it’s like I work overnight lols
-
I prefer workin at the office
I get distracted too easily at home plus i enjoy the drive. Maybe cause a dont hv a proper setup at home. But still i prefer the office
