How to properly have fun on a Saturday night:
1. Suddenly become deeply unsatisfied with current linux distro
2. Evaluate alternatives
3. Decide some change is needed but not too much: install fresh version of old distro
4. Once again, experience profound dissatisfaction
5. Opt for radical change
6. Erase all linux partitions, form a super partition and install a new linux distro on it
7. Spend hours familiarising with the new distro
8. Spend more hours googling stuff and typing commands in the terminal
9. Download current devRant avatar, send it to the PC via Telegram and set it as user's avatar for the welcome screen
10. Feel deeply satisfied
11. Accidentally wake girlfriend up while trying to get to bed. Get told off for staying up until 4am and for "being such a nerd"21 -
I think I've shown in my past rants and comments that I'm pretty experienced. Looking back though, I was really fucking stupid. Since I haven't posted a rant yet on the weekly topics, I figure I would share this humbling little gem.
Way back in the ancient era known as 2009, I was working my first desk job as a "web designer". Apparently the owner of this company didn't know the difference between "designer", which I'm not, and "developer", which I am, nor the responsibilities of each role.
It was a shitty job paying $12/hour. It was such a nightmare to work at. I guess the silver lining is that this company now no longer exists as it was because of my mistake, but it was definitely a learning experience I hold in high regard even today. Okay, enough filler...
I was told to wipe the Dev server in order to start fresh and set up an entirely new distro of Linux. I was to swap out the drives with whatever was available from the non-production machines, set up the RAID 5 array and route it through the router and firewall, as we needed to bring this Dev server online to allow clients to monitor the work. I had no idea what any of this meant, but I was expected to learn it that day because the next day I would be commencing with the task.
Astonishingly, I managed to set up the server and everything worked great! I got a pat on the back and the boss offered me a 4 day weekend with pay to get some R&R. I decided to take the time to go camping. I let him know I would be out of town and possibly unreachable because of cell service, to which he said no problem.
Tuesday afternoon I walked into work and noticed two of the field techs messing with the Dev server I built. One was holding a drive while the other was holding a clipboard. I was immediately called into the boss's office.
He told me the drives on the production server failed during the weekend, resulting in the loss of the data. He then asked me where I got the drives from for the Dev server upgrade. I told him that they came from one of the inactive systems on the shelf. What he told me next through the deafening screams rendered me speechless.
I had gutted the drives from our backup server that was just set up the week prior. Every Friday at midnight, it would turn on through a remote power switch on a schedule, then the system would boot and proceed to copy over the production server's files into an archive for that night and shutdown when it completed. Well, that last Friday night/Saturday morning, the machine kicked on, but guess what didn't happen? The files weren't copied. Not only were they not copied, but the existing files that got backed up previously we're gone. Why? Because I wiped those drives when I put them into the Dev server.
I would up quitting because the conversation was very hostile and I couldn't deal with it. The next week, I was served with a suit for damages to this company. Long story short, the employer was found in the wrong from emails I saved of him giving me the task and not once stating that machine was excluded in the inactive machines I could salvage drives from. The company sued me because they were being sued by a client, whose entire company presence was hosted by us and we lost the data. In total just shy of 1TB of data was lost, all because of my mistake. The company filed for bankruptcy as a result of the lawsuit against them and someone bought the company name and location, putting my boss and its employees out of a job.
If there's one lesson I have learned that I take with the utmost respect to even this day, it's this: Know your infrastructure front to back before you change it, especially when it comes to data.8 -
Client: I have lost everything on the cloud holy crap!
Me: Are you signed into your google drive, and within the folder?
Client: No, how do i do that again? I obviously cant be bothered reading your well formated and instructional guide and would rather contact you at 6pm on a saturday night8 -
Saturday late night wisdom.
Software developers you need to work on communication skills.
Everytime LinkedIn says need a problem solver. It means a guy who can understand what non technical guy is asking for and translate that to a software or at least come up with a example of why he is wrong. Explain them. They are not dumb fellows for asking that feature. You might think the feature is stupid. Don't assume this. Sit with them. Understand thier user flow, understand the frustration your software is causing them. Then you'll see why are asking for that X feature.
Every feature request made is basically my opportunity of understanding of product. Don't wait for users to tell you requirements. Understand and suggest, implement prototypes and show them, a causal question such as "Hey would you think providing a keyboard shortcut for this submission is great?"
Understand our job is not just to write software.
Our job is to solve thier problems using software knowledge.
Don't you agree ?4 -
I heard this joke a long time ago and I've tried getting laughs ever since. I swear I won't give up trying.
A priest, a surgeon and an engineer are going golfing on a Saturday. The golf club owner says the court is unavailable - on Saturdays the golf course is in use by a group of firemen who lost their eyesight while rescuing golf club members out of the club house a year back. The surgeon exclaims "that's awful! I'll arrange a fundraiser, maybe we can help improve their eyesight." The preacher folds his hands and states "my communion will include them in our prayers." The engineer is silent for a moment, then asks: "Can't they just play at night?"8 -
CS graduates that have never gone beyond "Hello World", fuck college and it's "system".
So the actual victims of the story are friends of mine, CS colleagues, but I can't help but share as the existence of code freeloaders enfuriates me.
At college in order to graduate you need to present a project in form of a thesis a side from your actual thesis, there is a shortage of pre-approved projects and everyone wants one.
A talented friend of mine who has many years of programming experience got in one with another friend of mine and a lady who I've never seen before. One Saturday night my friend and I were having some beers at a local bar and his phone didn't stop beeping so I jokingly said:
"Bro, tell your girl you need some space", he laughed and explained it was the chick from her project having some "issues" with node.
"So? Tell her to google it, it's Saturday night", he explained the girl has never coded before even though she's about to graduate so she had take it upon herself to pressure him to finish ASAP so she can graduate and get an already agreed position at the federal energy commission... As dev!
I've seen my bud in a lot of dumb calls with said chick trying to explain how you CAN'T COMPILE THE NODE WEBSERVER TO A .EXE!
It frustrated me how such an idiot can go through a CS major buying homeworks and getting low self-esteem geeks to code for her. Then I realized that as an aspiring InfoSec guy, lazy idiots coding is good for business.8 -
I have got a new director at work. My previous director had to retire already, the man was already feeling it and he had been on the institution for more than 35 years....I am 30, so this tells you how much the man has been there.
This new dude.....has the presence of a Caterprie (Pokemon) or an Oompa Loompa. In contrast, the previous director felt like a 4 star General (never been in the presence of a 5 star since those occurrences are world war rare) but I had respected that man so much and loved working with him. I really did loved my boss, he was stern and professional, but kind and friendly to his staff, fiercely protective, no one took advantage of I.T while he was there, he would literally fight for us and took our word before anything else. The man was, well, a true man. A true leader.
He took a chance in putting me as the head of my department, but he had faith in me, and coached me and trained me as much as he could. Had the requirement for his position not been a masters he himself told me that he would have loved to make me his successor, even when I would constantly tell him that I was scared shitless of the work he did and the amount of things he did for the institution, to me this is a very laaaaaaaaarge cowboy hat to fill (this is Texas, he wore a hat, the saying is normally "shoes to fill", but fuck it)
This new guys looks away when the other managers are speaking to him. He constantly interrupts us. He constantly tells us about how the other institution in which he was (rival might I add) does X or Y, its fucking annoying to the point that me and the other managers have a drinking game, for every time he references his old institution we drink one beer over the weekend. It is Saturday night and I am 36 in in total (this is my favorite part of it tho) and it is just annoying.
His train of thought makes no sense to me:
"This application, where did you buy it? we tried purchasing one on Y when I was still there but found none"
Me: "Well, since it was a new government mandate and had nowhere to go we had to develop it in house"
Him: "We had tried to purchase what you guys had but found no place that sold it, so why didn't you try purchasing it?"
Me:.....well, because it was brand new, purchase it from where? We also don't like dealing with vendors that manage these sorts of things because every new requirement takes them weeks to produce on very high budgets, historically, my department has only had maintenance fees for the software that we have and even those applications crap themselves all the time and they take weeks to answer back to us.
Him: So you decided to develop it in house instead? we would never do that! back at y we purchased everything our engineers never really developed anything!
Me: Well then, what is the purpose of having engineers if they are not going to actually develop an application?
Him: IF there is something out there that is better then why should you reinvent the wheel?
Me: For this one I did not reinvent the wheel, I am not talking about creating a programming language from scratch, but how does custom solutions that specifically feed the needs of the institution to be produced otherwise? The department has developers for a reason, because they have very specific needs in here that can only come from a team of developers that are in house satisfying those needs.
Him: Well our engineers never had to do that. Sure projects sometimes had to put on holds because the vendor was busy, but such is the nature of development
Me: No it is not, the nature of development is to create things, it is one thing for my team to go through bugs and software considerations, it is another for me to not provide a service because some random company is taking two weeks on a $300 dllr an hour contract to put a simple checkbox on a form. If a project fails the board is not going to care that some vendor is not doing their job, they are just going to blame me, if that is the case then I would much rather the blame be actually mine than some sucky third party "developer" also, your engineers where not even engineers, they were people with a degree that purchased things, that's it, please do not compare them to my guys or refer them as engineers in front of me, they are not.
Him: Well, maybe.
MAYBE?!! motherfucker I did not kill myself learning the ins and outs of architecture and software engineering on my own time after my fucking bachelors in C.S for your codeless background ass to tell me MAYBE. My word IS the fucking WORD here, not yours. Fuck me I really dislike this dude's management practices.
The shitty part? He is not a bad person, he is not a bad dude that is out to get us, just a simple minded moron with no place as a leader.
I know leaders, I know what a leader is, this is not one.10 -
So a good friend of mine calls me up on Friday night, and he tells me about his close friend abroad who messed up and, without going into details, needs me to do his C# project for a course. The deadline was on Monday. I said I couldn't promise anything, but send me the requirments and I'll look into it.
Now, the pay was good and I felt that the guy's reasons were valid (and that the prof was being a dick), also the project was doable in a day and a half, so I said ok. I spent my entire Saturday working on it till I had most of it done: I just needed to refine the code and do the report.
I sent the app to him so that he can check it out, to which he responds by freaking out and explaining that he has missed most of the classes and has a barely passing average (huh maybe the prof isn't so much of a dick). If I get him a high grade, the gig will be up and his prof will fail him. He wants a 60-70/100, no more.
Feeling obliged by our agreement, I spent my Sunday complicating trivial code, breaking standards, and adding minor bugs. Had I know this was what it was going to lead to, I would have never accepted.
It's just so much harder to break good code than to write it.6 -
It's Saturday night here and am enjoying web development instead of partying.
Is this adulthood ? Am i doing right?5 -

Title: "Saturday Night Fever"
💤 Come on! 💤
🍹 It's the weekend! 🍹
🍻 It's time to party! 🍻23 -
Calls between Saturday morning at 6 am and Tuesday night at 5.
*does not include calls my teammates worked*21 -
We have a pretty simple rule in our team:
Do not deploy to production on Friday.
Well thanks to the client being very slow to reply to me, they only signed off on launching the app at 15:30 on Friday, for a big campaign the app was built to facilitate starting Saturday.
Guess who had to bite the bullet and launch a new app into production at 15:30 on Friday.
Guess who got a text from his boss at 19:30 that there was a critical change required tonight.
Guess who was making code changes and deploying to production at 21:15 on Friday night while drinking Gin and tonic...
Nb This was a project only i was assigned to and came in as a rush job at the last minute.9 -
We are soo sorry we missed you last Saturday night a bit before eleven.
We will try again to deliver your parcel, another day (or night).
Maybe. Maybe not.3 -
36 hours here.
It wasn't really work, but I went to FOSDEM 2 years ago with a friend of mine that's also a hacker (hardware stuff mostly). So on Saturday we went to all the talks fully energised, when that was done we got back to his home to "sleep", but there's so many other projects to do!! At the time we felt like we really needed a weather fetching thingy in our IRC client (I think it was Hexchat) but that didn't exist yet. So we built it, kinda in a pair programming way, all night long. Oh, it's morning already?! Time to go to the Sunday talks! We were both complete zombies by then, but somehow I still remember a little bit of it.. some ass who was showing oh-my-vagrant (boring as shit) and some other stuff. All in all, 36 hours on the counter when I got in bed completely wasted, but it was so worth it ♥️ -
Hey guys.
Sorry for the absence.
So... Lately I've been working in shifts, doing extra hours and stuff... And today, Saturday I went to work for nothing... My boss fucked me just to make me go to work, when there isn't much work to be done...
Btw, I have a burn out for more than two years because I had to work and study and sleep for 4 hours a night, for months.... (check my profile for more info).
Today I had enough
Almost got killed while driving... felt asleep.
I'm saturated.
Monday I'll talk to the owner of the company
and If I don't like what I ear I'm making several complaints:
- One for the organization that protects workers
- One for the work court (we have that In Portugal)
- And one criminal complaint... After all they fucked my health, my life and are putting my life in danger just because...
Lets see how it goes...
Better part... If I make any of the complaints above they can't fire me, make me work overtime or in unpaid shifts...
Oh, and someone else also made a complaint recently... Governement oficials spent two days this week checking the company accounts and calling workers for confidencial intervews...
So, I guess It's the perfect time to drop the bomb on them.10 -
First company I worked for, overall it was a good experience, but at one point they promoted a consultant to project manager, and their planning skills were about as good as their people skills, which is to say, appalling.
We had a project update for a huge client, that required, for political BS reasons, that most of the team spend several weeks on-site, 300km away from home.
Go-live was approaching, and the plan was: migration starts Friday night, shortly after midnight (so actually, Saturday) once the client’s IT confirms DB is backed up. Expected duration: 5 hours.
- So, you expect me to work from midnight to 5am on Saturday? And when do we start working on Friday?
- 9am, of course.
- 9am!? So you actually planned a 20 hour work day? (Note: legal maximum here is 10 hours in a day, 40 a week)
- And we have to be there on Saturday 1pm to recheck everything is running smooth.
wtaf were they thinking?2 -
This is the story connected to this rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/1533475/...
Thanks everybody for the concern! I want to inform you that I'm doing alright again. I went to a not too big event not far from home.
After a few beers and one stronger drink me and my friend had a good time. Everything that happened after, I can't remember it.
My friend told me we were walking to our bikes (he wouldn't let me go home, he noticed something was wrong) and right before we arrived I fell to the ground. After a while my friend helped me up but as I stood again I fell immediately, my head hit the ground hard.
I puked a lot and after almost an hour the police was there, who called an ambulance (last night I got a flashback in my dreams and vaguely saw one of the two ambulance drivers.
They inspected me but surprisingly they didn't take me to the hospital. My friends' mom also arrived and together they pulled me in to her car.
After that they brought me home and of course my parents were shocked as hell. They pulled me out of the car and put me down on the couch. It was about 4 am at this moment.
I first woke up at 7 am but immediately fell asleep again (I can't remember me doing this but my father said I did this, he stayed awake the rest of the night). An hour later, 8 am, I finally woke up. A lot went through my head because I could't remember how I came home.
Without many words I went to bed and later we talked about everything that happened.8 -
Being a Dev has its perks.
Started working a couple hours ago (yep, on a Saturday night) to get some code working for a demonstration of a system prototype on Monday.
The code in question was some recursive directory traversal tied in with some file generation in NodeJS. 2 hours later I nailed it, and the feeling of satisfaction of having that code working on all of your tests is overwhelming.
It's a different kind of excitement compared to sitting behind your desk at the office.1 -
So my school's wifi doesn't support my TV or something, all I know is the wifi doesn't appear as a potential connection for the TV. (Even then, when I plugged the TV into the Ethernet cable, it still gave me an error message.) Well I figured out a loophole Saturday night.
I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop. Then activate the hotspot on my laptop. Connect to the TV through the laptop's connection. Problem solved.
Loopholes are one of the best parts of life.1 -

Remember this one?
https://devrant.com/rants/2148954/...
Yesterday I got promoted which is great, I know that I’m appreciated.
The job is really good, I enjoy every day at work..
But...
My darling, my love, my car (I named her Monroe)..
In the Morning i got promoted and in the evening I fucking blew up her engine..
I think it’s the balance in the universe.
I think I never enjoyed any car as much as I enjoyed her.
Her smell, her bitchyness, her looks...
I hope she’ll Rest In Peace.
Gotta find something that compares to her now which is gonna be a challenge. I used to drive her every evening and every Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, that’s how I spent my personal time.
Many of you won’t get me I guess.. cars are my hobby, my passion, a very important part of my life. For the last 5 years used to own at least 2 cars at once, now I own 0..😔
No idea what I should do with my free time now, there’s nothing I’m Passioned about besides cars..2 -
When you've got two unpublished side project Android apps that you need to put the polishing touches on, a passion project website that you've half started, a new job that you probably should study for, and you say to yourself: "there's no Windows live tile that does this particular thing that I want. Guess I'll learn how to make them."
Also, is it just me, or should developing live tiles be way more straight forward? I know it's like the least hip thing I could be making, but I've never claimed to be a hip person.2 -
I still hang out with my friends that I have known since we're in elementary school. The whole gang just had dinner and beer at a pub last night. We usually hang out on Friday or Saturday night. Then sometimes on weekends at someone's place cooking meals, playing games etc.
I also hang out with my gf at least one day a week. The activities are *censored*.
Apart from that, the rest of my life is work life.
I won't say my life is very good but I can't say it's terrible. 🤔1 -
Ah, nothing quite like settling in for some beer and mindless Internet videogame violence on a Saturday night only to find out 30 mins into your session that your PSU has shat itself.
Time to go shopping I guess...1 -
Saturday night coding to make a deadline for a Wordpress website that needs to launch on monday...
I hate Wordpress!!!! Did I ever mention it?
Ok, now back to work!7 -
A client of your old company have a problem and sends and e-mail to your ex-boss on Friday at 3PM. Your ex-boss fw the mail to you at 11:55PM on Saturday night and calls you 3 times in the next 3 minutes. What should I do? Ignore him or tell him to go...? you know...8
-
I turned up for a meeting with some folks from US on time. Waited for 45 minutes and they did not show up.
Come home half an hour later and see a mail that says “anyone available?” from their side after waiting for them for 45 fucking minutes. A meeting that they scheduled. On a fucking Saturday night.
Fuck you!1 -
Getting drunk texts from my employees that just remembered something to do at night on a Saturday is definitely one of the highlights of my weekend.
I don't trip, poor dudes get fucking tasked out of the ass by the entire institution, and whilst I try to shield them from bullshit as much as I can their duties entail a lot of stuff, if they forgot to do 1 task out of the fucking 100s of shit they are asked to do on a daily basis that is fine really. I am never going to shit on them for it. It happens, specially when you are understaffed and everyone has thousands of additional duties. I really try man.
But yeh, them drunk texts are funny af. Makes me think exactly what the fuck were these dudes going through that somehow something clicked and reminded them of a pending item.6 -
Last few weeks have been very hectic and I will explain everything in a few days when all of my things to do are done (if you are concerned - nothing bad happened, just code nightmares. Expect a strongly worded rant soon).
Also, I’m getting vaccinated for the coronavirus on Saturday night!9 -
Yesterday night!
Yeah it was Saturday night but not for me. I was at bus stop and my jiofi device was in back pocket and after some time I was coming back to my room and thinking let's switch on wifi. After that my mobile was not connected to jiofi so I thought may be jiofi out of charged. Later on when I was checking in my pocket I realize that I missed it on bus stop!
Actually this jiofi device is my first salary's garbage:D
That's why I was little bit worried.
So I went back to stop and saw nothing was there. Disappointed but wait, suddenly devRant notification came and mobile vibrated so I checked and I seen that my mobile connected to jiofi and then I checked carefully, it was there!
Actually jiofi was placed in opposite face so that light was not visible but I got my jiofi back.
Thank you devRant notification:D2 -
Ok this is a weird story.
So myself and two friends were working on a chrome extension several years ago, probably late high school/early college years.
So before any of us had seen the ballmer peak xkcd, I had discovered it on my own. I was telling my friend that we should start drinking because a)it's Saturday night, and b) I code better buzzed. So he decided to push the limits. He poured my drink super heavy, then another, then didn't finish his and insisted I did. He ended up getting me super drunk. I started going off on how they were doing it wrong, then took over the keyboard. What I wrote cannot even be considered code. I went on an incoherent rant, puked in a trash can, and then woke up in the bathroom with a towel as a pillow.
And that's the story of why my friends are convinced the ballmer peak is definitely not a thing.1 -

My entire 1am train ride across Berlin tonight, a Saturday night/Sunday morning, was devoid of anyone else in the train. I even passed through one of the biggest stations.
This pandemic is wild.2 -
So just babbling my shit down here.
(Tldr : i am a crazy guy who followed my half slept brain, went onto a stage , gave some kind of motivating , stammering talk to a large group of professional strangers, enjoyed that day with a red embarrassed face and just got my first pic of me speaking on stage and that is so awesome !)
Last Saturday i went to a gdg meetup and i embarrassed the hell out of me.
I went there with just 2 hours of sleep from the previous night.
After a few talks there comes a guy who is taking some time to install is setup and the host calls for lightning round session ( ie he asks if anyone from the audience would like to share something about their product or something).
I am a fucking nutt guy. I can explain something to you nicely in a hacky way as long as i have done enough work on that and you speak my native language.
But giving a talk on English stage, hell no! I stammer, mix hindi with English and start speaking werd shit.. And that's what happened.
I don't know what went into me but as some guy went to the stage and talked for 2 mins, i was like yeah i want to do that too. So in next turn when he asked for a show of hands, i raised mine and fucking went to stage!
I forgot that if you go on stage you should have something to talk to . But the moment i was on stage, i was like... "Nope, we will do this differently".
I had been working on a video ads module from the last week which could be easily explained in 2 mins. But i felt like giving a non techy talk instead.
It went something like this: i introduced myself with my experience details ( who gives experience details on stage !?!) Then host said to speak loudly and i went like "Bharat mata ki jai!"( Victory to mother india (wtf!?😆) .
Then started talking about how the developers feel disheartened when searching on internet where the resources are scattered . And the solution i told them was :"don't be disheartened. You will eventually find it (like wow dude wtf, as if they didn't knew that) . Look on the youtube and other resources " and then went full on explaining/marketing about some online tutor who gives advice/consultancy via a subscription based payment ( tbf that guy really helped solve a lot of my doubts, he has written books on Android dev and is the top so answerer for Android).
Then i went on sharing my thoughts live on that fuckin stage ! ( Live because i usually post my thoughts here on devrant before discussing them out with real people, you guys are my safe space) but there i discussed my thoughts on libraries!
I have this believe that Android devs these days are having lesser knowledge of the system because we have all the libraries and templates available to us. But when we have to customize stuff, we need to go deep into docs and source classes and find ourselves in trouble there. So i kind of said this out loud and that we should try to read more the code and implement stuff ourselves instead of using the library 😅🙈)
I was feeling so fucking embarrassing after that all stuff! It was so full of stammering , broken English and worst attempt at motivation. At that time i was regretting this and about to burst cry and run away, but somehow i gathered my self, got my mood back to the event games and talks, later went to the organizers and apologized(and they were very nice and didn't cared about it), and overall enjoyed my weirdest day!
When i came home, my mom gave me a little more confidence about it. Now i think i shouldn't be that much instinctive. Next day i went hack to work and everything got normal.
But Yesterday i found a link to the public repository of the photos. Ohh fuck, someone had took my image! and that was too in full hd!!! 🙈🙈🙈😅😆😆 Oh mann I can't stop looking at that cool stage speaker image, i love it ! I, the shy-est and the most uncool awkward person , present on the stage with a mike, oof , i think i lived my dream !
I hope i could get enough confidence and speaking skills to take a real stage talk next time ( and maybe enough interesting talks and confidence to talk with girls of our office, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )5 -
The 'farewell great manager Jim' party on Monday.
The [insert name of a department] Christmas party on Wednesday, which you shouldn't miss because they want the company to be more integrated.
The [insert name of your department] Christmas party on Friday, which is separate from the other party because they want the company to be more inte... wait.
The hackathon on Saturday and Sunday, because coding all night for free to create buzz around the company's name is always fun.
The team meeting where the product manager presents all the shinny new things they're thinking about presenting to the client while our deadline is still a couple of weeks away. "And the engineering team knows exactly what to do, right?" Yeah, sure, if you say so. -
Log 1:
Day 10 of crunch time. I have entered a sleepless zen state. Lord willing, I will be able to get 7 hours of sleep Saturday night. The building is terrifying at night, as there are a lot of noises. Security guards are nice, but curious to see me all alone. Must not show weakness in case they think numbers will give them an advantage over me.
Supplies are low. Only one type of energy drink left in the machine, and coffee gone for the night. My phone is out of fast data so Pandora is spotty at best. I have battery to get me through the night at least.
Tomorrow and Saturday decide the fate of the project. My team lead has not slept in at least 2 days. I feel guilty napping when I do, but she is driven like Ahab so I will let her obsession carry her.
If I am alive tomorrow I will report in.1 -
Windows 10 is just a bad joke at this point. First it doesn't show any text in the menus, now it fucks up all the drivers. I really need to scrap it and install literally ANY other os in order to improove my experience but I keep telling myself that it doesn't really make sense until I have a new harddrive and I keep wondering if the Evo850 is worth it. Fuck the saturday night struggle.5

My ideal Saturday night is a few (or a lot of) beers and a room full of comp sci majors arguing about hypothetical sorting methods and their theoretical complexities.1

At my first programming job, the codebase was a tangle of legacy web forms, MVC, templates in a content-management-system, and AngularJS. Learning the CMS was particularly stressful.
One Saturday night, after binge-watching videos of DOOM 2 speedruns and mods, I had a dream that the Icon of Sin from DOOM 2 appeared in the code, gazed at me menacingly, and lunged at me before I woke up.1 -
Random Saturday night questions: UFOs...are they a real thing or are they just a figment of cultural imagination? If real, from a technology perspective, what do you think is involved? Has anyone here seen one?4

So I was reassigned from Android to backend a month ago...
Meaning a poor lonely Nexus 5 was just sitting collecting dust...
Saturday night and what do I do?
Go out like a normal person?
*Laughs way too loud*
Nahhhh let's do a pwnie install and start snooping on neighbors!!! -
Reset 900 domain service account credentials, placed them in a vault, and updated over 6000 items on our domain leveraging those credentials saturday night. 99% success rate today when we opened for business. What did you do this weekend ?4

Just started creating build on this dark saturday night. It's going to be a loooong and tearful weekend.

Most fun I had coding?
I was developing my first android app and the database accounted for all the weekdays.
It was a night and I was coding. I build the app after 90 minutes of last build. I was fucking amazed to see that my app was running perfectly on Genymotion Emulator whilst the same god damn build crashed on my phone.
As a new novice developer, I thought it could be due to the OS version difference b/w my phone and VB.
I went on to spent an hour or so, to figure out where I had gone wrong. I re-read my code multiple times and nothing. I could not find a single error in the code.
I was fucking speachless when it hit me, FUCK, today is Saturday (last build was around 11PM Friday) and VM's time is usually screwed (it was Wednesday there) and since I had not accounted for weedends entry in database, the app crashed.
It was really fun having this sort of a bug for the first time in my life. Solved it within minutes after that. -

It never seize to amaze me how so many seem to think more base = better sound, even to the point where the sound is so muddy and unintelligible that it sounds like you’re listening to the upstairs neighbor having a party on a Saturday night.
Even if you only listen to electronic music with heavy bass, there is usually some treble or mid tones that just gets obliterated with too much base. The only situation I feel like it could make sense was if you primarily listen to jet engine noises or whales mating on dry land.
Come on, treat your ears and honor your artists by using some quality headphones that can sound like it’s meant to sound.2 -
Week : 53 ( Year 1 )
How is your weekend going?
Which night would you like better, Friday night, Saturday night, or Sunday night?
Previous Week : https://devrant.com/rants/110605457 -
Friday night : oh look at all these frameworks/package/tricks I heard about this week, time to test them !
Saturday night : well I guess I'll sleep better tomorrow...
Sunday night : fuck ! -
So... I went to bed Thursday with a mild headache, which turned into a full migraine during the night.
Friday morning I couldn't even open my eyes. Had to stay in bed, sleeping through almost the entire day.
Saturday was slightly better, head still hurted enough to keep my bedridden.
Sunday I managed to leave the bed, eat something and wander around the house a bit. My wife and kids seemed a bit quiet and subdued but I was still to groggy to think anything of it.
This morning I wake up, feeling good enough to check the news and the work chat.
😱 WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!?
I'm out of it for a day or two and the entire country has gone into #coronavirus lockdown!1 -
Siesta over. Don’t feel at all rested. Probably won’t do much in terms of coding until my boyfriend leaves on Saturday night... although, might be able to slip some in while he’s asleep.
That’s what you get for laying in until 1pm! -
Overcommitted at work, said yes to a demo on Friday which I didn't even create. Next week is going to be pure hell for me. I am crying shivering and want to really quit.
I have delayed a project and I was given last week as to create whatever I could and I did too. But still it's far from happening.
I really have no idea what to do.
It's Saturday night and I just want to cry cry and cry.
I want to get out of all this.4 -
So last Friday I orders my new camera (Canon EOS 1300D) from Amazon with prime NEXT day delivery
It didn't turn up Saturday even tho I got told it would but I got £20 credit from them for their fuck up.
I was told it would be delivered early the next say (Sunday) and by 3pm it was still not there... Got another £5 from them for their fulse promises.
It arrived later that night at 6:30pm
So yesterday I ordered a tripod using my credit and next day delivery for today and im just wondering of it will arrive or not.
Weird thing is, The reason it was not delivered was because of "network problems"...3 -
Some really motivated guy.
He apparently wants to monitore his opensource application on his spare time.
His application is likely to have no users though.
But well, that guy looks like kinda montivated.
For professional purpose, guy already did monitore with newrelic.
Seems like he was not satisfied and switched to datadog 3 years ago.
But liking digging dirt, he migrated to self hosted telegraf/influx/grafana (which he likes to about)
Today that guy is not in his company but on his potatoe machine in the cloud. So he wants to be minimalistic, datadog should do.
Now you got it, random ff*** is me, on a weekend, a shinny saturday for that matter.
Actually now it is night.
Now let's start the fight.
I have datadog scripts!
But datadog be sneaky as well. datadog upgraded to v6 8=)
-> scripts ain't working. outdated.
I check the logs. Too bad!
-> datadog removed dogstatsD.log in v6!
Well I have nothing to do in my life it is too cold outside as they say. I read the (sluggy) datadoc and tries some shell command (given in doc) to upload some events to dogstatsd (via udp).
-> Nothing happens, neither in local nor in remote.
ok maybe command not up to date, so let me try some official library. datadog from python. Feels like a nice try!
-> only available for python >= 3.5. 3.4 on my good ol' jessie. Upgrading os for datadog not acceptable.
Maybe dogstatsD not started... doc says it is by default, but well, not the first time doc is wrong... I put datadog as log verbose. Guess what: as per standard: shitload of error.
Digging... kubexx, docker and whatsoever apparently preventing collector to do its normal stuff
np, I am gonna check that on github! Goog, people have the same errors. They seem to fix it by trying some settings, with. or without luck
-> I am not that warrior to check every stuff
Ok, let's stop the datadog events, it works. It does not anymore. You know that sentence. We all know it.
Still not enough!
How about testing that uber super nice feature of v6. The logs. After all I want to make events out of my applicative logs.
How about reading the log again. Configure the yaml log as they say. Done. Make some pattern. Read the best practive. Done. Configures the yaml. Done. Now testing.
-> remote datadog interface be like: no logs for you dude you need to pay
ff***f*f*f
Fuck datadog, fuck that v6 version, good old tail -Fxx | someaggreate.js|sendmail will do...
