Coworker wrote a nice package and put it on Github, to share with other departments.
I link his package on our company Slack, mentioning a team, with text "What do you think of this one? Is it usable for you guys?"
Next thing I know I have to explain to an executive why I'm "posting pictures of seductive cartoon girls in company chat with disrespectful commentary"
It linked the Github profile picture of the developer in Slack. A fully clothed anime girl, nothing particularly lewd about it.
But I like stabbing back a bit, and confusing the fuck out of people in suits:
"Hate to say it, but a good majority of all the code the company runs on, is written by people known as weebs, who use their so called waifus as their GitHub profile picture. It is very common for open source Javascript packages, but since we recruited 50 extra devs it now also happens internally. It's not my thing either sir, but I'm afraid we have to embrace it... "
"But what about our female devs? What about Joanna, she's in your team? We have to think of diversity! Our investors are really in to diversity, we can't have a bro culture!"
"Sir, with all due respect, we have super diverse teams without even trying. The problem is... they're all millennials. They grew up on weird memes... and are probably ten steps further in embracing diversity compared to the rest of the company."
"Also, Joanna is the one who drew this particular picture. She's charging a €15 commission for profile pictures... Do you want one of your fursona, sir?"
"What is that?"
"Uh... nevermind. Let's... let's not go there"48 -
Just a joke I found online:
One day I was facing some issue with Outlook and I raised a ticket to get it resolved. I got a call from the Service Desk lady after some time and it went this way:
Lady: Hi I'm calling from service desk, what is the problem?
Me: (I explained the problem).
Lady: Can you please share your screen and give me the control so that I can solve the issue?
Me: (I shared the screen and gave the control. She solved it!!)
Lady: You may close the ticket from your end, the issue is solved.
Me: Thank you very much, I will close the ticket.
I opened her profile in lync and had a look at her profile. The display pic looked small in size. I instantly messaged her Employee ID to my colleague and asked him to have a look at her. He replied "She looks good in some angles".
I tried searching her FB profile with the help of her name, but there were too many results.
I started searching on Linked In instead, I found her profile this time. I was trying to enlarge the profile pic and suddenly a message popped up - it says
"I'll share my better picture with you on your outlook ID but you may please stop sharing your screen??"

The way 90% of the population wears their face masks really explains a lot about their approach to using software, apps & websites as well.
I feel like giving up.
I am not a developer for the salary, or just to solve analytical puzzles. Those are motivators, but my main drive is to make the world more comfortable and enjoyable, better optimized, build ethical services which bring happiness into people's lives. I want to improve society, even if it's just a tiny bit.
But if users invest absolutely zero percent of their limited brain capacity into understanding a product that already has a super-clean design and responds with helpful validation messages...
...why the fuck bother.
I used to think of the gap between technology and tech-incompetent people as an optimization problem.
As something which could be fixed by spending a fortune on UX research. Write tests, hire QA employees, decrease tech debt, create a bold but unified & simple design.
But the technologically incompetent just get more entitled with every small thing you simplify.
It's never fucking fool-proof enough.
Why can't I upload a 220MB PDF as profile picture? Why doesn't the app install on my 9 year old Android Froyo phone? Why can't I sign up if my phone number contains a U+FFFC? Why does this page load so slowly from my rural concrete bunker in East Ukraine? WHY DO I HAVE PNEUMONIA, HOW DID I GET INFECTED EVEN THOUGH I WAS WEARING A MOUTH MASK ON MY FOREHEAD?
This is why I ran away from Frontend, to Backend, to DBA.
If I could remove myself further from the end user, I would.
At least I still have a full glass of tawny port and a huge database which needs to be normalized & migrated.
Fuck humans, I'm going to hug a server.25 -
Me: Hi, how can i help you today?
User: Sorry, i can't upload a picture for my profile. It shows a popup saying that i already uploaded it.
Me: it's because you uploaded.
User: Awesome man, thanks.4 -
The GET /users endpoint will return a page of the first 13 users by default.
To request other pages, add |-separated querystring with the limit and offset, as roman numerals enclosed in double quotation marks. Response status is always equal to 200, plus the total count of the resource, or zero when there's an error.
You can include an array of friends of the user in the result by setting the request header "friends" to the base64-encoded value of the single white pixel png.
Other metadata is not included by default in responses, but can be requested by appending ?meta.json to any endpoint, which will return an xml response.
If you want to update the user's profile picture, you can request an OAuth token per fax machine, followed by a pigeon POST capsule containing a filename and a rolled up Polaroid picture. The status code attached to the return postal dove will be the decimal ASCII code for a happy smiley on success, and a sad smiley if any field fails form validation.

This isn't really a hacking story but it does remind me of something I did as "revenge."
In middle school, this one fool kept bullying me. Always tried to harm me, always tried to insult me, always tried to make me fall during PE.
I hated him a lot, so instead of trying to kill him as planned, I did a harmless little keylogger prank thing.
I installed a keylogger on the school's laptop before class. (I did it during break, and when class started, I placed it on his desk.)
He took the bait, and instead of doing work, he logged onto his social media accounts. Now I had his passwords and everything.
When I went home, I logged onto his social media. I checked his messages so I can get some dirt on him, didn't find much except for the fact he snuck out a few times, and smoked before.
I changed his profile picture to some cringy anime thing and messaged one of his friends (the one who always copied my test answers in History and would steal my homework) and I said, "tell --- that if he doesn't stop being an asshole, I'll do worse than "hack" his social media."
It freaked them both out a bit, but didn't change their behavior, which is a shame because my threat was empty. It's not like I was able to do anything more than that in middle school. To this day, they still have no idea who did that.
This was about 4 years ago.15 -
- Be a Devrant lurker.
- Only created an account for upvoting.
- Desperately want that cool profile picture
- Need rant for points.
Why is my appreciation through upvotes not enough? -_-9 -

Just changed my profile pic on LinkedIn to show how proud iam to be a member of the devRant family10 -
About 6 years ago, my boss found out about social media and how he could use it to boost his business. So he created a Facebook page.
A week later he called me to his office and asked me to move the page's profile picture from left to right. I told him this was not possible and was something Facebook doesn't allow us to do.
Next thing I know he started telling me to check and try before I say no, and should never say no as anything was possible.
Obviously, I quit.2 -
Coolest thing about platforms like devrant, is that it's so easy to get people to read what you have to say, and get them to notice you.
It doesn't matter if you have a nice profile picture, have a lot of friends/followers or anything like that.
The content is what matters.
Also, its not like everything here is developer related or is super nerdy, most of the stuff you see are normal things you'd expect people to post on things like Facebook when they want to be social and connect with people.
It's sad that this is not how most social media is done.7 -
So starting this month, December and January I'll be learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP so that I can develop my own website as a personal profile. Anyway, in my googling I found this odd yet very informative picture.11

I am seriously getting pissed off at these so called web developers on Instagram... More often than not I stumble upon an image of vs code with some Lorem ipsum code on the screen.
Just now I saw a picture that drew my attention, so I clicked on to the profile and fuck me in the rectum from a 90 degree angle this is what I see. Visual communication does not FUCKING EQUAL WEB DEVELOPMENT.
DAMN IT, JUST FUCK OFF.15 -
FB launched profile picture guard feature recently for Indian users ( well, we Indian men deserve these kind of publicity. -.- anyone being on Indian forums knows what I am talking about )
Anyway it claims that othersa CANT download your profile picture. But. I just did inspect element and found the image and saved it (and deleted of course. This was for research purposes). How effective do you think this can be?19 -
Interviewer: *looking at my GitHub* do you use devrant?
Me: ...yes
Interviewer: ok, cool
I had an interview once where the dev interviewing me recognised that I had devrant avatar as my github profile picture.
Maybe that was one of the reasons they didn't get back to me after that interview? 🤔7 -
I can't figure out shit..
To be honest I created this profile just so I can write down somewhere what I am going through.
So, once upon a time I had graduated from college and went right into a corporate (has only been 2 years since). I was fortunate enough that I got assigned a project that was just starting, and even though I had no clue what was going on, I started doing whatever was assigned.
I initially worked in java and then finished all my tasks earlier than expected, so they switched me to another C++ project that builds on top of it.
Fast forward 2.5 years, I'm now the team lead of the CPP project and all my friends who were in the core team have left the company.
As usual, the reason behind it is shitty management. These mfs won't hire competent people and WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT retain the ones that are. I can feel it in my bones that it is time for me to leave, but fuck me if I understand what I am good at.
I have been able to handle all the tasks that they threw at me, be it java or c++ - just because I love logic and algorithms. I have been dabbling in ML and AI since 4-5 years now, but could never go into it full time.
Now I'm looking at the job postings and Jesus Christ these bitches do not understand what they want. I have to be expert in 34567389 technologies, mastering each of whom (by mastering I mean become proficient in) would need at least 6-8 months if not more, all with 82146867+ years of experience in them.
I don't know if I am supposed to learn on Java (so spring boot and stuff) or I'm supposed to do c++ or I'm gonna go with Python or should I learn web dev or database management or what.
I like all of these things, and would likely enjoy working in each of these, but for fucks sake my cv doesn't show this and most of the bitch ass recruiter portals keep putting my cv in the bin.
Yeah...
If you have read so far, here's a picture of a cat and a dog.5 -
I get so damn angry when people treat me like tech support.that I made my WhatsApp profile picture the following3
-
I just tried to sign up to Instagram. I made a big mistake.
First up with Facebook related stuff is data. Data, data and more data. Initially when you sign up (with a new account, not login with Facebook) you're asked your real name, email address and phone number. And finally the username you'd like to have on the service. I gave them a phone number that I actually own, that is in my iPhone, my daily driver right now (and yes I have 3 Androids which all run custom ROMs, hold your keyboards). The email address is a usual for me, instagram at my domain. I am a postmaster after all, and my mail server is a catch-all one. For a setup like that, this is perfectly reasonable. And here it's no different, devrant at my domain. On Facebook even, I use fb at my domain. I'm sure you're starting to see a pattern here. And on Facebook the username, real name and email domain are actually the same.
So I signed up, with - as far as I'm aware - perfectly valid data. I submitted the data and was told that someone at Instagram will review the data within 24 hours. That's already pretty dystopian to me. It is now how you block bots. It is not how Facebook does it either, at least since last time I checked. But whatever. You'd imagine that regardless of the result, they'd let you know. Cool, you're in, or sorry, you're rejected and here's why. Nope.
Fast-forward to today when I recalled that I wanted to sign up to Instagram to see my girlfriend's pictures. So I opened Chromium again that I already use only for the rancid Facebook shit.. and it was rejected. Apparently the mere act of signing up is a Terms of Service violation. I have read them. I do not know which section I have violated with the heinous act of signing up. But I do have a hunch.
Many times now have I been told by ignorant organizations that I would be "stealing" their intellectual property, or business assets or whatever, just because I sent them an email from their name on my domain. It is fucking retarded. That is MY domain, not yours. Learn how email works before you go educate a postmaster. Always funny to tell them how that works. But I think that in this case, that is what happened.
So I appealed it, using a random link to something on Instagram's help section from a third-party blog. You know it's good when the third-party random blog is better. But I found the form and filled it in. Same shit all over again for info, prefilling be damned I guess. Minor convenience though, whatever.
I get sent an email in German, because apparently browsing through a VPS in Germany acting as a VPN means you're German. Whatever... After translating it, I found that it asks me to upload a picture of myself, holding a paper in my hands, on which I would have a confirmation code, my username, and my email address.. all hand-written. It must not be too dark, it must be clear, it must be in JPEG.. look, I just wanted to fucking sign up.
I sent them an email back asking them to fix all of this. While I was writing it and this rant, I thought to myself that they can shove that piece of paper up their ass. In fact I would gladly do it for them.
Long story short, do not use Instagram. And one final thing I have gripes with every time. You are not being told all the data you'll have to present from the get-go. You're not being told the process. Initially I thought it'd just be email, phone, username, and real name. Once signed up (instantly, not within 24 hours!) I would start setting up my account and adding a profile picture. The right way to ask for a picture of me! And just do it at my own pace, as I please.
And for God's sake, tackle abuse when it actually happens. You'll find out who's a bot and who isn't by their usage patterns soon enough. Do not do any of this at sign-up. Or hell, use a CAPTCHA or whatever, I don't fucking care. There's so many millions of ways to skin this cat.
Facebook and especially Instagram. Both of them are fucking retarded.6 -
Jon Skeet's profile picture fits so nicely into this.

Stack overflow is overrated
With that I mean that a lot of people think that stack overflow is the best thing that every programmer has and can't live without it. That if stack overflow is down, nobody is able to write a single line without bugs. That 47.24% of a programmers time is spent searching on stack overflow. Sure, it is helpful for finding answers, and some are very good at explaining stuff, but it's not essential. I made an account when I started coding, because it "sure is the most important thing, right?", but the only thing I have done with it is changing the profile picture, because I simply don't use stack overflow that much. When I search my problems on Google, I mostly find the answer on some specific forum for that library I'm using, or more often, in the official documentation for it, no need for stack overflow. I'm not trying to say that it is not useful at all or that it should be taken down because nobody uses it, but that it is not essential in every programmers life.9 -
If the recruiter starts her/his message with "Dear Mr. Doe", when I'm clearly a woman (got a profile picture and a unmistakeable female name) ...
Why is it sooo hard to check at least the first line of your c&p message??6 -
i HATE snake oil idiot types
red flags:
- "interested" in tech but have no programming experience or knowledge, no real work experience
- they claim they can provide assistance and guidance to people in machine learning!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
- private instagram, weird
- spent all their money on their instagram profile picture, looks like those dumb finance gurus with a lambo
- is, in reality, unemployed
what value do you provide to society?
really its just people who are good at talking and can convince other people of equal or lower (not higher) intelligence but not really can't DO anything
and they wonder why so many companies fail
what a fucking joke i hate you
its really not just annoying its immoral - and thats the part i despise so much
grow up, put in some work, and be valuable to society5 -
I created fake linkedin profile with ai generated picture.
Already passed some minor technology assessments.

my mum just sent me a picture of her and my long time no see cousin from US over WhatsApp. Short time after that, Facebook sent me a friend proposal of a girl from US I don't know - obviously it was my cousins girlfriend because she had a profile picture with him. My cousin doesn't have Facebook.
WTF?!
so what Facebook did must have been some face analysis of the picture my mum sent me over WhatsApp and compared my cousins face with profile pictures from friends of my friends to send me the proposal I got.
this is so fucking scary! I immediately thought of @linuxxx security blog and how my usage of such software affects the privacy of others besides me being transparent as fuck.
Definitely have to rethink my software choices and app/online behaviour!11 -
Other people:
- I got 20k upvoted post on 9gag
- I got 25k over like on my fb profile picture
Me:
- I got 200 over ++ on devrant :D1 -
I put this picture as my whatsapp profile picture to stop the countless amount of how do I fix this device questions.
Who else here gets irritated when family and friends asks you to fix their computer or printer or ask you what device they should buy2 -
I don't know if anyone else here uses kik but there's something that's been bugging me for a while
Occasionally (frequently) bots start a conversation with you (the typical "come visit my porn website etc etc), right? Now, this has happened to me at least 20 times now, and EVERY single time, the bot's profile picture has loads of translucent yellow stars edited in, and I have no idea why
I can't think of a possible explanation for this, and I've put a lot of thought into it
Attached is a cropped version of what I mean19 -
Who the fuck sends good morning images to strangers?!
And there was this person who sent me images of good morning quotes out of blue on WhatsApp. I have never met or know this guy and vice versa. I was very creeped out.
I didn't recognise the phone number initially, but later I figured out that this person might be an employee of my ( relative ) client and he was using the mobile number assigned for the business like his personal WhatsApp account with his own profile picture and all. Very unprofessional.
He sent me similar messages for a week and I didn't bother to open the messages. I'm gonna pretend like I don't recognise the phone number. Anyways, his messages have stopped.
I hope I'll never have to face him or have any business discussion with him. I'm never ever gonna visit this relative client at his place as long as he is an employee there.6 -
would love the ability to export the profile pictures! would make a cool profile picture for things like github too i think4
-
My boss asking me to change my profile picture on LinkedIn in ?!
Do they have the right for such things? Keep in mind my current picture is professional. But she want all the company employees to have similar images in the same location with the same background !
Should I fight this or let it go ?!18 -
Got the question “How do I set a profile picture on Skype?”
1. Who the f*** uses skype today??
2. He calls himself a developer...
3. I was surprised he didn’t ask how to send add contacts in skype5 -
just got an email from medium with my daily stories, and the second story had someone's devRant profile picture as the image for the story! good job @dfox, you are really making an impact!!! https://link.medium.com/jQptPbA2nU4

Now my only goal is to obtain enough points on this app that I might trick out my profile picture and get it printed to the custom sticker.1
-
Worked on an Android app that synchronized contacts. Didn't consider the contact id may change, leading to (rare) cases of properties being synchronized to the wrong contacts. Only found out later in production when one of my frequent contacts called - and my phone showed a wrong profile picture for him.

I think it is so sad you can't use your devRant icon on other sites. I know you could download them but the whole point is anonymous ranting so if someone know your picture they know who you are. I love the devRant icons <33

ok hear me out: local unicode
by that i mean, unicode designates a character that is designated to show up differently for each person
for example, 👤, and your operating system replaces it with you profile picture
or maybe some unused character could be your favorite color and you'd set it in your operating system settings14 -
.Dispose();

what an idiot! and his profile said he had 4 years of experience...
oh, yes, and that thing of not using arrays...
I have even more code from this guy, but one picture is enough -

Finally I updated my profile on devrant , Next step to update it on google or gavtars because it shows picture when I was a kid.

The other day when my family and I went to the beach, I met an old friend whom I hadn't seen since 2013. We hardly recognised each other. He brought to my attention that my hair had turned grey! 😮 I was imagining it was still black, but at a closer look it's more like salt & pepper or even beyond... 🤨 I thought I was immune to aging. Hence, the update of my profile avatar, to give an honest picture of my present appearance.2

I'm about to submit an app to the App Store. I took some time to make sure signing in/out of different social media accounts worked properly in my app.
I've been locked out of my Facebook developer account since yesterday due to "suspicious activity" and was asked to upload a photo of myself to verify my identity. I'm not too confident my account will be unlocked as I don't use Facebook regularly and therefore never felt the need to upload a profile picture.
Fantastic.2 -
I was doing stuff in my room, when I slipped on my hand and landed on my knees. I look up, and I see my Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins puncturing my hand.
Fast-forward couple of hours, I decided to post a picture of it (it wasn't bleeding or anything) on Twitter. 2 seconds pass, and my account got suspended.
I have 2 simcards: one for calls, one for unlimited data.
Twitter is trying to call me to verify the account, but I have my data phone number in the profile.

My apologies, Mistaken WK177 for "Last Successful project"
Now my least Successful project:
It was in the summer of many years ago.
I created a social network site for a camp site where I used to go. People were able to upload their own profile picture and adding some text to their profile page... with google analytics I was able to see what pages were used the most:
the webpage about: the opening and closing hours of facilities
after a year we shut it down because it was not being used.
And of course facebook started getting popular. -
Non-programming related rant:
I didn't have a profile picture of facebook. So, I put one & removed the update post from timeline.
Still getting likes.
I don't want them *fb.2 -
Not a rant, but a concern: should I make a bigger effort to take my picture off as many public places as possible on the Internet? I already use avatars for FB and Twitter profile pictures (share photos only in private). Or am I being paranoid? What do you do about it?7
-
My email address appeared in a new data breach at gravatar. I thought that's exactly gravatar's purpose, to make my email address publicly known and provide an additional profile picture?1
-
Why don't new devrant users have an actual logo of devrant as a profile picture instead of that ugly puke-green background?3
-
My schools, university, and my previous company all use a profile picture with an ugly logo in LinkedIn that says something like "50 years.." or "80 years of..".
./. Ya'll make my LinkedIn profile look ugly. Why don't you use that classic emblem logo back?! -
I have had an interesting idea, create a script that runs every now and then to change my github profile picture, now I've been scouring google and stack overflow for hours and can't find a simple way to do it, or anyway for that matter.
QUESTION: Is there a simple way of changing your github profile picture using a programing language
I'd prefer python but I am open to others.4 -
When you configure your profile picture on the mobile app, you can clearly see the points needed for each item, including what you've already unlocked.
It would be nice if this could be carried over to the web version as well. -
We go to see a customer for a small project, probably 1/2 month dev and few thousand $, basically a small member page for a small local club.
"We want something exactly like this" he says. He opens the browser, logs in Linkedin, I wait.
"Something like this" he repeats.
I finally understand.
Well - I say- Login page and profile picture upload, yes we can do it...2 -
Lol this Rebecca James deleted its comment after i replied to it like that "You all sound like bitcoin promoting bots"
There was many accounts with boomers profile picture, one was promoting specialist of bitcoin trading. The other was saying "bitcoin is the true democracy"
I knew it was shady shit 😂 -
@dfox
first, avatars are a great idea!
BUT I dont eant to wait until i have "n ++" to change the what computer (mac/non mac) is on my avatar/profile image. [the thing with the desk and watch is ok, but i think unnessesary. I wear a moto 360 every day so why schiuld i have none or another one that dose bot look like the one i am wearing on my profile picture]
COULD "BADGES" BE A SOLUTION ?3 -
A better profile page would be nice, preferably with a picture and collapsible header area for more view room for rants that the user has posted.2

How do i show a profile pic from s3 bucket?
One way is to fetch it from backend and send it to frontend as a huge blob string. This is how i made it currently and it works.
.... what if i want to frequently get the profile image? Am i supposed to send a separate API request to the backend every time? What if I need to show the profile picture 100 times then that means I will have to send 100 requests to the backend API?
...... or even worse, what if I need to fetch a list of images from the S3 bucket for example, a list of posts that contain images or a card with the list of profile images of multiple users? If I need to display 100 posts, each post containing one image, That means I would have to separately call 100 API request to fetch 100 images…
That is fucking absurd.
Of course I can make it so that it saves that URL to that image as a public setting but the problem is the URL will be the exact URL to the S3 bucket, including the bucket name, the path and the file name as well as the user information such as the user ID. this feels like it is a huge security risk
What the fuck am I supposed to do and how am I supposed to properly handle display images which are supposed to be viewed publicly?20 -
Does anyone else contemplate timing their Github commits for the next year or so so that there will be a shaded picture when someone looks at their profile?
-
I am thinking of naming a game developer company with a catchy name. Due to all the shitheads that have come before me the name I want could be considered racist though it is not meant to be.
Ever since I saw this picture:
https://twitter.com/michaelkeyes/...
I want to create an image of a raccoon riding a hog from a profile image. Think lion king imagery except with a raccoon and a hog. I also want to name the company "Coon Hog Gaming". "Raccoon Hog Gaming" doesn't sound as catchy.
I am by no means desiring to be a woketard. PC culture turns my stomach. I also don't want to alienate any potential customers. I would like to signal to customers that we are not PC and will not be PC. This name does that. Yet maybe some customers would be offended so I couldn't market the game on Steam. Should I just go for it anyway? I guess down the road if things get even more stupid than now I could always change the company name.10 -
I have a stable day job of IT administration.
But since college years have been enthusuastic about open source. Lately learnd Python and did well with job profile related simple tweaks and hacks. Mostly self taught lone wolf, dont have corporate development experience.
I keep reading and Courses cant see bigger picture, where I am heading? How far i can go with this?
Any suggestion, motivation, criticism, someone who have been in similiar situation. Most welcome3 -
after learning design patterns i realize that when they write "builder" on your profile picture, they actually have written the name of the design pattern used to implement that part D

Amazing, I found someones old devrant profile back accidentally that I used to play video games with. Time to send them a random discord message with a picture of their old laptop :D

Finally after joining today and getting 10 likes I get to create my profile picture! Was fun selecting hair colour for my bald head :)2
