A colleague and I spent a month building a Shopify app that allows merchants to give customers store credit.

Since Shopify's API is so limited, we were forced to augment it's functionality with a Chrome extension.

Now before you go throwing full wine bottles at your screen because of how wrong and disgusting that is, note that Shopify's official documentation recommends 5 different extensions to augment functionality in their admin panel, so as gross as it is, it seems to be the Shopify way...

Today we got a reply from their review team. They won't accept the app because it requires a Chrome extension to work properly and that is a security risk.

Are you fucking kidding me? So I guess Shopify is exempt from their own security standards. Good to know.

Not to mention the plethora of published apps that require a staff account's username and password to be provided in plain text upon setup so it can spoof a login and subsequent requests to undocumented endpoints.

Microsoft's rebranded Chrome/Firefox downloader finally has extensions!

Google, why the fuck did you make the Android default USB connection type be "charging," and NOT "MTP"?! And leave no way to EVER set default to MTP!!!

EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME I plug my phone into my pc to transfer files, I have to open my notifications shade, scroll to the bottom to the fixed notifications, and change the mode to MTP, at which point the phone has to re-establish its connection to the pc!

This has been an issue from Android M and onwards. Nonetheless, Google still left in the settings app under developer options on rooted devices, the setting to choose which default USB connection mode you want to use. Even though it doesn't stay on what you choose!! It's like they left that there to purposely toy with us and get a good fucking laugh from our needless suffering.

Google, I love so much of what you do and your approaches, but honestly, some of the things you do, like this and for disabling Chrome extensions on Chrome internal pages, makes me want to strangle you and then throw you in a river of molten lava.

Corporate pushed a change to our PC's which similataneously installed chrome and pushed their security policies on us. Extensions are no longer available. I can't sign in with my chrome account anymore. I can't automate ui testing with selenium. I can't control any chrome settings, they're controlled by group policies now.

I guess it's time to switch to Firefox. At least until they block that. At least the UI testing still is functional on that...

I'm not sure if it's legitimate or not, but apparently it uses 80% of its profits to plant trees, and makes that profit from ads. is it safe to use? I'm not sure.

here is what you should know (some are based on claims by ecosia and aren't proved, but probably true):
- they plant a tree for about every 45 searches you make
- they are able to plant trees by using money from ads
- they "respect privacy"
- they're "fully transparent"
- they're a "social buisness"
- [I hope this isn't a turnoff] the search results are powered by bing
- since 1.9, vivaldi has included ecosia as one of the preset search engines (I'm not sure if it's the default)
- it has opera, firefox, and chrome extensions

Brave browser found a solution to all this fuckertry! It has built in adblockers for everything including built in vpn IP cloaker trace blocker and so much more for privacy and data integrity. Playing yt videos on brave browser works like a charm with no fucking ads or extensions installed! Everything is the same like chrome including layout development etc, minus ads tracking and data harvesting!

I didn't know this but every single chrome extension spawns off its own chrome.exe process. I had 11 chrome exe processes running and I didn't even have the browser open cause I use Firefox exclusively now. My laptop was crawling and I was wondering why cause I have 8 gigs of ram. After removing all the extensions my laptop became a speed demon again!

Boy oh boy.. Reminds me of good ol college days. I was in my final sem when Amazon came to our university for campus hiring. I was very confident that I will get selected. Funnily enough I went till the final round and I had a feeling that it went well if not excellent. It was a Friday night and we had to wait two excruciating days for the final shortlisted result to come. On the evening of Monday my friend T called me and told me my name is not on the list. I was heartbroken. I asked him who all got selected and he said our friend A did. A was, and still is a good friend of ours and I was happy for him. That night we sat down for drinks and as the night progressed I anguished over my selection. I still remember solving a binary tree problem holding a glass of whiskey in my one hand. The next morning I woke up at 6, detoxed myself with fruit juices and sat in front of my laptop feeling full rage from last night. I sat till lunch and hacked a chrome extension in one sitting. Mind you I had no existing knowledge of extensions at that point of time. I sometimes look how my life has turned since that time and now I am one of the devs in a team which work on a product that itself is a browser extension. :)

The dangers of PHP eval()

Yup. "Scary, you better make use of include instead" — I read all the time everywhere. I want to hear good case scenarios and feel safe with it.

I use the eval() method as a good resource to build custom website modules written in PHP which are stored and retrieved back from a database. I ENSURED IS SAFE AND CAN ONLY BE ALTERED THROUGH PRIVILEGED USERS. THERE. I SAID IT. You could as well develop a malicious module and share it to be used on the same application, but this application is just for my use at the moment so I don't wanna worry more or I'll become bald.

I had to take out my fear and confront it in front of you guys. If i had to count every single time somebody mentions on Stack Overflow or the comments over PHP documentation about the dangers of using eval I'd quit already.

Tell me if I'm wrong: in a safe environment and trustworthy piece of code is it OK to execute eval('?>'.$pieceOfCode); ... Right?

The reason I store code on the database is because I create/edit modules on the web editor itself.

I use my own coded layers to authenticate a privileged user: A single way to grant access to admin functions through a unique authentication tunnel granting so privileged user to access the editor or send API requests, custom htaccess rules to protect all filesystem behind the domain root path, a custom URI controller + SSL. All this should do the trick to safely use the damn eval(), is that right?!

Unless malicious code is found on the code stored prior to its evaluation.

But FFS, in such scenario, why not better fuck up the framework filesystem instead? Is one password closer than the database.

I will need therapy after this. I swear.

If 'eval is evil' (as it appears in the suggested tags for this post) how can we ensure that third party code is ever trustworthy without even looking at it? This happens already with chrome extensions, or even phone apps a long time after reaching to millions of devices.

I was prompted with an update for FF (auto-updater always fails for some reason), went on their website, found that part on the page, and opened up task manager. Had a short laugh.

FF: 7 tabs
Chrome: 2
Same extensions (AdBlocker, Ghostery, PageSpeed). Chrome has JetBrains integration though.

Need a serious help as I can't find a solution to this. My Google search (homepage + results) changes the language to a regional one on every refresh. I want it back to English, I even changed search language setting and the account language for all apps to english. When it hinted, "some apps don't have the same language" in a toast message, I updated that too.

Now I don't understand what is causing this. Here's what I tried. I reinstalled chrome. Removed all my extensions. Used the chrome malicious software detection. Used a different browser- Edge.

I see this is a problem with my Google account as this only happens after I sign in. The language automatically changes to a random regional language, but the search language settings still show English selected.

I checked all the apps authorized with my account but there's nothing suspicious there.
I added "?hl=en" to the url as a temporary fix but that doesn't really help much if I'm on another device. I also found some video suggesting to add "/ncr" to the url. It somehow fixed this for like 10 secs. and then I refreshed to see- back to the same problem.

I tried looking for similar issues and even asked a question on google forums but no luck. Somehow after an hour of repeating the same process of switching the language in settings, it seemed like it got fixed. Until now, where I logged into another device and the issue is back.

Any help? Please? Thanks. :)

I had a fun experience today.
Updated my system, got plenty of unsuspecting dpkg errors. Couldn't figure out how to solve them (all relating to something python-*). Next issue was Firefox, which wouldn't even start.
Uninstall, reinstall.
And it won't even start up without immediately giving me some XML error related to... chrome? Whatever.
Start it from the terminal, mostly to see if it gives me the error in more detail. Ublock Origin does not like when Firefox gets reinstalled apparently. Spend more time than I'd like to admit getting a Firefox to start in safe mode with all extensions disabled. Apparently it's 'firefox -safe-mode' (yes I didn't try the obvious because I wasn't thinking). Uninstall all my extensions then Install them again, problem solved.

Now to solve those damn dpkg errors...

Soo.. it should work if I install both, right? 😂

A Simple Question
How to make a chrome extension and which language should I use?

Enabling browser userscripts on Android is not an evident procedure for novice users.

It's annoying if people do want this functionality to change how web pages behave, e.g. they want to fix a broken banner on mobile that doesn't have max-width: 100% but instead crops off on the page.

At this current time, Firefox changed their engine so that it supports only a limited set of add-ons and you'd have to use a nightly build in order to enable other add-ons such as userscript ones.
Chrome doesn't accept add-ons/extensions.
And there's the JavaScript trick but again, not user-friendly.

It's just annoying.

Anyone know an extension for detecting angular actually works on chrome? Tried few top rated extensions, some web sites are clearly using it, but it failed to detect. Feel like I'm the best angular detective in the world 😒

I was wondering - no one seems to be able to write good CSS, so what if we had tool to generate CSS visually.
E.g. imagine workflow of UI design tools inside chrome browser (while inspecting specific element) or your favourite editor.

Might actually build something like that. Would definitely help with problems I face. 🤷🏻

Chrome vs Firefox ram usage. Chrome running 1 tab (moodle) and Firefox a blank startup tab. I was genuinely surprised to see Firefox using more than 50% more compared to chrome. Both browsers are 64 bit and chrome has perhaps 10 extensions while Firefox only 5

I am honestly impressed with this new chromium based browser.

Why, the , fuck , can I not set Chrome to use MRU when switching tabs on Linux!

The extensions don't work, and trying to set in in the shortcuts is impossible, because when capturing keys , the tab key is not suppressed!

As a beginner, chrome extensions udp sockets are shit.

The most annoying thing ever: Chrome changing the backspace button to now use Alt+Left. I get that pressing it while losing focus on an input is "terrible", but by just pressing the forward button again, the form is back in its original state! At least add an option to change it back without the need of any extensions! It is driving me absolutely nuts, because I often just press the backspace to go back, instead of going all the way to the top left of my screen and pressing the button. And it keeps messing me up!! It would take me at least a few weeks to get used to this!

So noob question, is automated web scraping a thing? What would you do if you wanted to grab the same information off similar sites and store it in a table that can be manipulated later? All you would have to do is enter the web site link after you finished coding it. I've used Chrome web scraping extensions but want a more automated solution.

My boss had an extension called 'fixer for java' on her chrome browser.
