My boss literally spends half an hour finger-fucking his phone on the mobile site to find "bugs", that I can't replicate. A combination like: swipe, pinch, landscape, portrait, back pinch, open new tab, close tab, ash cigarette on phone, dunk in toilet, dry, double tap... Aha I've found a bug, there's 0.5 pixel line of space between the bag header and the browser bar.

I met my girlfriend via online dating and she is often checking out recipes on social media, so I came up with the idea to combine cooking and Tinder as a tiny side project.

I built an app that lets you swipe recipes to add them to your cookbook and called it "Daily Cook" and it is available on both Android and iOS. :)

Holy fuck the Instagram Android app has the WORST UX I've ever encountered!

I'm a professional Android developer and my girlfriend had to explain how to see a specific "story" more than once; IE; tap on it until it rotates round to the first! But tapping on a video post turns on the sound! What kind of dog shit for brains moron designed those interactions to be the same?

I can navigate around the app until all but one of the tabs displays a profile page when I navigate back to it. Lost much?

The center tab breaks that but only because it opens up a whole new screen out of nowhere, (bye bye bottom bar!) which repeats the "photo capture" that you can also get by swiping left on the left most tab!

Don't even get me started on the swiping! None of the tabs swipe between each other, like the convention, oh no. But some of them can swipe, yes!

The first tab swipes left and right, where the hell do they go you ask? Look for the obscure icons at the top (oh and bye bye bottom bar again!). The forth tab swipes but only to the left, they have text tabs like standard. That screen that comes up out of nowhere I mentioned? That can swipe too, but now the text tabs are at the bottom for god knows what reason as the top is empty!

On the profile tab we have more tabs. These are icon tabs inside the content now. The first two change the post content from a feed style to a grid, okay, so far so good. The other two? You'd imagine they also change how you view content right? Nope, one shows your favorites, and the other replaces the whole screen with a "photos of you" screen! With not only the bottom bar still showing, but an up button! Where the fuck do we go "up" to on the home screen??

Then we have the bookmark icon on the toolbar, which opens up a new screen "Saved", guess where that tabs are this time? They're back at the top! You know why? Because the navigation bottom bar is still there!! And there's an up button!!

At this point I'm just about ready to kill myself using this fucked up, backwards facing, ass for a face app that is somehow one of the most popular platforms on the earth, yet seems to have been made by five different designers on opposite ends of the planet!

I've created a small smart home web app 2 or 3 years ago.
Features:
- Change DECT heating controller settings
- Philips Hue control
- Wunderlist integration
- Send a cooking recipe to the web app (from a large recipe site, with a greasymonkey script)

I've mounted an old Android tablet to a kitchen cupboard where the web app runs in kiosk mode in fullscreen (you can swipe between the different panels).

The web app is build with .NET Core Web-API, Vue.js and MariaDB. Everything runs on a Raspberry Pi.

Last year I've discovered openHAB with HABPanel...

Wish I could left swipe the work I get assigned.

Pull-to-refresh is useless.

If you are a mobile app developer, please get rid of pull-to-refresh. Your users will thank you.

I have the impression that mobile app developers choose to implement the pull-to-refresh gimmick just in order to make their app comply with a design trend. It seems like a desperate attempt to appear "modern" and "fancy", not because of the actual usefulness of the gesture.

Pull-to-refresh is one of those things that are well-intended but backfire. It appears helpful on first sight, but turns out to be a burden.

It takes effort and cognitive strain to avoid triggering a pull-to-refresh. The user can't use the app relaxed but has to walk on eggshells.

Every unwanted refresh wastes battery power, mobile data (if it is an Internet-connected app), and can lead to the loss of form data.

To avoid pull-to-refresh, the user has to resort to finger gymnastics like a shorter swipe for scrolling up or swiping slightly up before down. Pull-to-refresh could even be triggered while pinch-zooming in or out near the top of a page, if the touchscreen does not recognize one of the two fingers.

Pull-to-refresh also interferes with the double-tap-swipe zoom gesture. If one of the two taps are not recognized, a swipe-down to zoom in can trigger a pull-to-refresh instead.

To argue "if you don't like pull-to-refresh, just don't use it" is like blaming a person who stepped on a mine, since the person moved and the mine was stationary.

A refresh button can be half a second away in the menu bar, URL bar, or a submenu, where it is unlikely to be pressed accidentally. There is no need for a gesture that does more harm than good.

Using a mobile app with pull-to-refresh feels like having Windows StickyKeys forcibly enabled at all times. The refresh circle animation sticks to the finger.

If the user actually wants to refresh, pull-to-refresh is slower than a refresh button in a menu if the page is not at the top, meaning pull-to-refresh is useless as a shortcut anyway if the page is in any other position than the top.

An alternative to pull-to-refresh is pull-for-details. Samsung did it in some of their apps. Pulling down against the top reveals additional information such as the count and total size of selected items.

If you own a website, add this CSS to make browsing your website on the pre-installed Android web browser not a headache:

Why is this necessary? In 2019, Google took the ability to deactivate the pull-to-refresh gesture on their Chrome browser for Android OS away from users. On Chrome for Android, pull-to-refresh can only be disabled on the server side, not the user side. The avalanche of complaints? Neglected.

Good thing several third-party browsers let the user turn off this severe headache.

I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...

...and then feature creep happened. Now I have implemented support for multiple users with different access levels; user profiles; encrypted login system (and encrypted cookies that contain no sensitive data lol) and session handling according to (perceived) best practices; secure password recovery; user-management interface for admins; public, private and group-based sections with multiple categories and posts in each category that can be sorted by sort order value or drag and drop; custom user-created groups where they can give other users access to their sections; notifications; context menus for everything; post & user flagging system, moderation queue and support system; post revisions with comparison between different revisions; support for mobile devices and touch/swipe gestures to open/close menus or navigate between posts; easily extendible css themes with two different dark themes and one ugly as heck light theme; lazy loading of images in posts that won't load until you actually open them; auto-saving of posts in case of browser crash or accidental navigation away from page; plus various other small stuff like syntax highlighting for code, internal post linking, favouriting of posts, free-text filter, no-javascript mode, invitation system, secure (yeah right) image uploading, post-locking...

On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...

It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.

I have a minor feature request for the android app.

I would love to swipe down to refresh the current view. The reason for this is that sometimes my Internet connection isn't great and a rant does not load (or any other page).

It makes the app feel slightly gimmicky while a simple refresh would suffice.

I was using the app Jobr to apply for random positions. It’s like tinder — only you swipe to send your resume.

A week or so later I got an email from a company locally that wanted to set up an interview. I honestly thought it was a scam! I didn’t even remember applying for the job.

Long story short, they’re mostly desktop developers, and I’m the first front end web guy. I was initially hired to help with UI stuff but on the last project I was developing Service Workers. So I guess I just get invested and give my fullest.

Now myself and one of the other programmers are working on the 3rd gen of our software, built with Vue.js and rest APIs.

Coolest project I worked on was the one that let me learn to code.

It was a mobile calculator for the blind. The app counted the user's taps to come up with the number they wanted, instead of having them hover their finger around the screen to find each digit. Then each operation was mapped to a swipe gesture.

dfox? I think it would be nice to make the different tabs 'swipeable' so that you can swipe from one tab to another, it is especially handy for the peopke with thos super big screens :D

This is a classic example of "We need to justify our Dev's salaries so we made a bunch of changes in the name of innovation."

Why did they have to do this? I miss the old design where one swipe from the top had 5 icons, one for wifi, one for mobile data, one for Bluetooth, one for battery saver and one for flashlight. If you wanted to access something extra, one more pull and you'd get all of the notification tray options.

Now these fucking things take up half of the screen. Absolutely worthless design.

Looks like Google forgot how to do good UX / UI design.

1.
Why is the text in the appbar black, but all other icons (including the lock inside the textview) white. It would make sense, if the lock would be black too (as the textview is abit lighter than the appbar).

2.
Maps was way easier to use, before they invented MD Refresh. When you tap on a point on the map you get that info view at the bottom of the screen. Before it was a draggable window, which could be maximized with a swipe. Now you have to tap it, the box goes away and a new window appears, which is just the same as before MD-Refresh.

3.
In "Google Tasks" the activity title is not centered for some reason.

Feature request: swipe from rant to go back to list of rants. It would be easier than reaching up for the "back" button.

Who says you can't use CMD on a Windows phone?

I managed to crack the screen of my precious Lumia (yes, haters, I <3 winPhone) and now the back and home buttons don't work. Everything must happen by searching it in cortana/search.

You can imagine what going back one level in settings must be like. And every operation is like a command on a shell. No tiles, no swipes, nothing. It feels raw.

I'm using an auxiliary android (ughh) phone for now, but there's no windows phone in the market right now. And the swipe on G-board sucks.

The point of this rant is a question: does anyone know when the surface phone is releasing?

Allowing only 1-2 chosen apps to use mobile internet while being run in user-space (as in you see the shit and are able to close it via a swipe) would be sick..

Never knew this one...swipe up on chrome mobile, logged in on Android and you get suggested content, nice! How have I not been using this? This will be a nice time killer for quick reads, interesting.

I had weird apple charges on my credit card so I called the bank and told them I didn't do them and own nothing apple.
they cancelled my card and sent me a new one.
the new one came with a paper saying I need to activate it and the first time I use it I might need to type in the pin.

credit cards typically worked if you insert or swipe you have to type in pin,
and you can wave it over the machine for small charges and that won't ask for pin, which is probably what they're saying is I can't wave until I pin.

so I go to the nearby grocery store so I can activate the card with the pin and order online groceries later, and coincidentally they have a new payment machine (why?), one of those without buttons that just looks like a phone.
I insert it, expecting it to ask me a pin... it beeps saying approved

I don't think my card was leaked due to pinning though. when you order stuff online there should be an approval process on your end to confirm but it just doesn't exist. so if anyone gets your credit card info they can just sell that. I had to order a very hard to find drug from one sketchy (to me) website and after I did so that email got signed up to a weird newsletter and I harassed the shit out of that newsletter company for contacting me. I would assume they also sold my credit card details, or it "leaked" in a hack, whatever. this whole damned circus. I have 4 months of the drug but at some point I'll need more and they're the only ones that have it... so I guess I'll get to find out

It’s been a loooong hiatus from devRant but I’m back and still no swipe to exit a rant. Cmon, that shit would make this app easier to navigate.

Why can’t i permanently turn off Bluetooth on an iPad? I swipe down, tap ‘Bluetooth’ and instead of turning it off permanently like any sane design decision (as in, how Android does it) it decides to only turn it off for a day? Why??? Who wants that??

Package Installer on android needs to show something other than just the progress bar. Even a basic log like windows installers that say, "copying this, extracting this, done..." If it affects the minimalism of the interface, they could try doing what Tor browser does- swipe to see a log. It just feels heartbreaking to wait 5 long minutes for it to process on this tortoise device, and then get, "app not installed." with an OK button. :( Like, whyyyy? There should be a "THAT'S NOT OK" button.

I have find an Easter egg on chrome for mobile that I didn't know before and by accident.
When you tap on the number on top right to see your tab and swipe the card 5 times from bottom to up the cards while make a flip.

So due to some necessary repairs on my Nokia 6.1 i had to use an iPhone for the last 2 weeks (was the device they gave me for the duration of the repair). And let me say something in advance: I own a Macbook Pro, i own an iPad Pro, both devices are excellent for what i use them for. I enjoy OS X, i enjoy iOS on the tablet. But oh boy is the iPhone a shitshow of a magnitude i have never seen.

First off: The notifications. They feel like Android 4 or something. No customization, no grouping, not context. Also the swipe down gesture simply blocks whatever i am doing.

Multitasking: What a shitshow. There is no continuity, apps reload on a whim, no switching between apps (except that strange thing where the app shows up on the left upper screen, but i can't go back from there?)

Settings: WHY ARE APPS SETTINGS IN THE GLOBAL SETTINGS!! And not even all settings are. They are all over the place. And the settings are so convoluted and bloated, i can't find half of the things i am looking for.

Clock & Alarm: Goddamn that design choice with the edit button infuriates me to no end. Why can't i click an alarm and simply edit it? Also: Why do i have to enter the clock app to even see which alarm is going off next?

The Appdrawer: WHY CAN'T I SORT MY APPS BY NAME?? I have to conciously remember where i put things. Apps i use rarely, apps i use often.

Some image viewers on smartphones let the user delete photos and videos by swiping them off the screen vertically. This causes the risk of it happening accidentally. Someone must have thought this is a smart idea.

If a gallery application has this anti-feature, I will immediately stop using it and install a third-party one without swipe-to-delete.

How to emphasize that the user can swipe something?
Ich want the user of my App to swipe left or right on top of a number to increase it.

Maybe also some other suggestions for a fast number selection?

How difficult would it be to change the Android app to use a left to right swipe to go back to the rant index, rather than/in addition to the left arrow or X?

Does anyone else have the problem with GBoard when you swipe for code it always default to coffee?

After seeing how OS X and various Linux dists are handling virtual desktops Microsoft is leaving a lot to ask for in Windows 10. OS X's full screen your app into a new virtual desktop is pretty neat after you learn to swipe back and forth. And CentOS for instance allows you to create a virtual desktop and associate certain apps with different desktops. Windows however, does only allow you to create extra virtual desktops. But if you'd like to swipe between them you're out of luck, unless your computer has a touch screen. And if you think that clicking on an icon in the task bar would transfer you to your opened windows of said application you are wrong. It just launches another instance of the same application. Sigh...

Ok, new to Twitter . Kinda liked it, followed some good techies , but i am quite confused in using it.. can someone help?
1) how to edit your tweet? Like if you did a typo or just need to change some text
2)when i visit it after a few hours( say 4 ) it shows 'incase you missed' , i press it and it will take me somwhere down. What's the meaning of that? All the messages above that message are of last 4 hours?Am i supposed to swipe up or down?

Dat animation: open a WhatsApp chat, start recording a voice message, swipe up to lock the recording, cancel the recording and watch what happens.

Okay is it just me but whenever I open a picture on devRant and then when I want to close it I swipe down and it doesn’t go away and I get pissed off each time

Setting swipe refresh on back button of phone is the evilest thing done by Facebook till now.

When you swipe in from the left to show the side menu on Dev Rant and nothing happens... Yeah that.

mild rant. Android phone updated last night. Phone rings this morning. Swiping right to answer does not work. After putting glasses on, I can read the miniscule "swipe up..." text. OK, they put some words on there, not their fault I tried to answer the phone without glasses. But, why the world change how the phone gets answered? What it really a problem? I've already discovered a new one: reaching into my pocket to get out ringing phone caused an accidental swipe up so the call was answered before I got to look at the caller id info. Just another thing changed that wasn't broken to begin with. And no, I could not find a setting to change it back.

We should be able to swipe right and left.

I know I'm a bit late to bitch about this, but why would anyone in their right mind remove a UI/UX gesture that was loved and adored by millions and replace it with a far less intuitive gesture? I'm talking about Google's decision to fucking replace the Google Now swipe to dismiss cards gesture with a two stage tap and click to hide stories gesture! Why the fuck would you do that? The buttons are far too much of a precision action. And they are located at an area that is not natural for a single handed use. What this has effectively done is, force me to use my phone with two hands. And I fucking hate it! Can anyone here give me a valid reason for Google's design change? It's beginning to get on my nerves and my OCD compels me to hide all the cards until there is none left, so not minding it is not an option! Ughh!

So yesterday there was a discussion at my company about what would be more user friendly for deleting an item or items from a list. Long Press or swipe. We came to an agreement that depends on the UX and choice. What do you think?

One time a has some task to optimize an images on mobile application so it can swipe on list without lags (to this time it works fine, there was microseconds lags, but it was my code and I don't like to leave like this). I takes me a long time trying a lot of solutions but everytime was the same. I leave this task because I thought it can't be done. Everyday I was thinking about it, one time I have even a dream about programing XD. One morning I wake up and it came to me, one simple solution (I think there was 2-3 lines of code to change). I go to computer and try it, it works, it was a weight off my mind. Of course I go to boss say now we have faster, better etc. and he also was happy :)

I have a laptop with 8gb ram, 1Tb HDD, i5 7th gen running windows 10 and Ubuntu. Right now I'm using windows 10 as my primary OS, I'm simply addicted to the gestures especially the four finger swipe to switch desktops. I have been thinking of adding an SSD to the mix and my budget only permits a 120gb M.2 or a 250gb normal ssd.

The advantage with m.2 is that I can keep my HDD and boot my OS from the ssd and maybe install my IDEs on there but with the other ssd I'm gonna have to take my HDD out and use it as an external.

I read somewhere that 250gb above SSDs are the ones worth spending money on and that the 120 and 250 doesn't justify the price or life.

So my question is, should I go for an SSD? and if I do which one to go for m.2 or the normal one?

So, apparently my Play Store settings get reset when I restart my phone, so Google decided to update Google Keyboard to Gboard for me (and god-fucking-dammit, that shit is absolutely useless to me). I can find older .apks on websites like APKmirror for Google Kinstall but they won't install, saying that "it seems like the package is corrupt". I'm not sure exactly why this might be happening, but according to APKmirror’s FAQ it might have something to do with cryptographic signatures or that a newer version is already installed on the device. Gboard is disabled and I assume that should be enough for that, and I don't know if it would even detect it as the same app in the first place, so my best guess is that it’s got to do with the former which is why I'm turning to you guys.
Does anyone have advice for a solution? I don't have any problems getting another keyboard either if needed, but I would really like something that both has separated layouts per language, as well as a similar swipe-to-type function, since excessive tapping really aggravates my CTS. :/ Any suggestions?
