This sunday I had the glorious idea to fix a not-so-recent Wordpress website for a friend.
Imagine an upgrade from 3.3.2 to 4.9.8! (and PHP 5.5.old to 7.2.new

Oh boy. I thought it was impossible, because the site uses a free theme from 2012 and had some other plugins installed.
But what kind of developer am I, if I give up so easily?

I forced XAMPP to run PHP 5.6.stoneage in order to let me debug this thing. After some fixing in different files, I was able to get the admin panel back, disabled some plugins and then overwrote the installation with WP 4.9.8. After firing up the admin panel I had to fix 20 differend PHP files in the plugins.

Finally! After the plugins were updated, all worked again.
Except for the backend part of this free crappy theme. It uses an old version of JQuery UI widgets with custom mods.
I've done enough for today so I let it be like this. I'm not in the mood to load a second JQuery version.

Designer decide to have a meeting with stakeholders about UX/UI workflow for control panel of our new embedded system (no framework, no library, gui is bit per bit rendered on frame buffer).
A week later, still nothing on my table, not a mail, not a call. Meanwhile I wrote a framework, the control system, renderer, and messaging queues between tasks.
Wrote some widgets, a layout system and a view swtching mechanism, and a separate stack control to use a "back" button.

Now I am stuck for I do not know what should happen when clicking on various (non obvious) items on the touchscreen.

What's your worst experience with "not invented here syndrome"?

In the recent past I've been dealing with custom made JS datepickers, autocomplete boxes and various other widgets that were purpose made for some feature. Almost every single widget the app uses is built from scratch.

Now there are new features that need these widgets to behave differently, and needless to say, none were built with customisation or extendability in mind.

Hardly shocking, I know, but I'm the one that has to spend several hours to get these widgets to work for the new features instead of using some of the many open-source, tested, mature and customisable solutions that are out there.

Every Android user since 10 years ago:

Just got layout managers done - pretty nice step forwards since now widgets don't need to render their children themselves; they can (and by default DO) delegate the work to a layout manager.

Here are the StackingLayoutManagers, which are the equivalent of WPF StackPanels or just the normal way HTML works. They have different orientations, however, and will soon have different alignments (Start, Middle, and End, which is the same thing as the typical Top, Middle, Bottom, Left, Center, Right, except SME can be used for either horizontal or vertical alignments)

Worst thing you've seen another dev do? So many things. Here is another...

A developer purposely forged international shipping documents by 'hard-coding' data to get around international shipping restrictions (ex. we can't sell 'Widgets' to Germany...so under the category he would replace the value with 'light bulb'). He was 'under pressure' to make keep the money rolling in no matter what.

We were eventually 'caught', fined over $300,000 (which was better than the $10,000 per offense and we had thousands of offenses).

For this major frack-up, 'Rob' was promoted to manager of the International department, got to travel (including his wife) to several European countries, and eventually obtained a company-paid MBA degree.

'Rob' liked to joke about how he would sometimes have to pinch himself how lucky he was by working for such stupid people (yes, he used the word 'stupid') and how gullible government investigators were.
"All I had to do was say 'its a bug in Windows' or some other kind of nonsense and they believed me."

'Rob' quit 3 months after receiving his MBA degree (again, 100% company paid) and the international department closed due to some potential illegal activity.

I didn't know "bandwidth" can be so hard to understand even after 2 hrs explaining..client still wants widgets with autoplay videos..God why?

TL;DR I'm looking for a way to make a webapp for iOS.

I am developing an app for iOS devices. I am more familiar with JS, CSS and HTML, not to mention I have already created a fair chunk of the app. So it would be great if there was a solution that worked like UIWebView/WKWebView. I've had numerous issues with both of these widgets. UIWebView worked the best, most like a normal browser renderer, however still has some very annoying anomalies. For instance the input box could be covered up such so that you could still type but not see what you were typing, no other web browser does this. I've had plenty of issues that I have had to find hacky workarounds for. Is there a better way? I've heard of Titanium by Appcelerator, however I wanted to get as many opinions as a can.

So why does upper management feel the need to bog me down in process paperwork, tickets to count my widgets, and endless endless emails and spreadsheets to prove that I have work to do. Progress on my sudoku application goes well. Damn, what is javascript fantastic. While the code of the previous version that I posted here was alright I did decide that i want to split code and html elements after all. I have now a puzzle class doing all resolving / validating and when a field is selected or changed, it emits an event where the html elements are listening to. It also keeps all states. So, that's the model. puzzle.get(0,1).value = 4 triggers an update event. It also tracks selection of users because users selecting fields is part of the game. I can render full featured widgets with a one liner. Dark mode and light mode are supported and size is completely configurable by changing font-size and optional padding. So far, painless. BUT: i did encounter some stuff that works under a CSS class, but not if I do element.style.* =. Made me crazy because I didn't expect that.

I really don't get why creators of already-suspicious looking software (and the related suspicious looking website) put terms like "NO VIRUS" or "100% free of malware" next to the download area.

I mean, why would that help anything?

After a year using ElementaryOS, I'm planning to switch to another distribution.
I'm planning to go on Linux Mint (I need a stable machine with all the tools I need easily installable)
Now, I have to choose between KDE and XFCE. I've used KDE a little but I didn't get the point of all those widgets but I'm still open-minded. I've used a pure version of XFCE that was shitty-looking but was good at use.

Well I can say one thing for sure. The tooling found for Flutter in the form of IntelliJ and Android Studio is far superior than fucking around on a text editor das for sure.

Not really into the continuous nesting of widgets. But then again I was not a big fan of having jsx either.

Both options still better than fucking around with the Java Android api....and I fucking love Java.

Still feels like Google realized that such approach was better, else I don't think they would have justified the creation of the Flutter lib. And yes. I know that it is not a complete replacement for Android Java, but the interfacing between Dart and the Java api feels more natural at least to me and the widgets look native af so we go on with them big plus digits.

Isn't it curious that most development libraries, frameworks, widgets in an ecosystem see a decrease in popularity when they reach a "no longer under active development"/ maintenance stage (especially exacerbated in the front-end)?

As if we just can't settle on a convention. As if, even for limited-scope solutions, a final stage can never be reached, there must be perpetual growth. As if we must constantly trade a solution for a shinier one, that just might provide us with 2% profit based on a doubtful forecast... or not. When you can't decide on a font

I'm using Zooper widgets, tasker and my Python assistant.

Trello's android app doesn't give you the option to choose a board when you make a widget. It just picks one itself based on seemingly arbitrary requirements. Thankfully, trello has a brilliant open API, so there are several capable third party apps.

I'm going to re-try my ConsoleWidgets/ CursesWidgets project from complete scratch. Here are some things I learned and will do better this time with:

- Keep people updated on progress to maintain motivation (Hence this post)

- Centralize drawing, eliminate curses entirely besides in this static class.

- Don't worry about complicated rendering until basic rendering is done. I really got stuck up on text rendering last time.

- Sort out a color system from the very beginning, and make it as simple as possible. Working with curses, it is a good idea to have a color manager.

- Research how to logically render two items - both sized to 50% of the screen - when there are an odd amount of pixels available.

- Only make one type of widget at the beginning. Don't worry about Buttons and Sliders and such until the base Widget class is completed.

- Truly decide if I want to call them Widgets or Controls

- Don't worry about supporting multiple curses windows. Got hung up on that too. stdscr will do for everything I need.

- Cache inflation values so that they need not be re-calculated each render. Re-calculate on resize.

- This is more of a c++ thing, but drop pointers in favor of references. It's 2018. I have already started to do this in other projects but THIS IS THE ONE.

Actually kinda sad, that there is no pure rust ui framework out there, but rather mere adaptations of c/c++ frameworks for rust. It's better than nothing for sure, it just would be nice, if i could use a framework, that doesn't create a massive memory leak, because i looked at it funny.

In particular i'm using fltk-rs, and everytime I'm applying a font to some widget, 500kb get added as leaked memory. Doesn't sound like a lot, but for one it's a dynamically built application, so the order and amount of widgets changes, and this application is supposed to run days, if not weeks.

thanks to heaptrack i was able to pinpoint that to libpango, which i'm not even interacting with directly, but rather indirectly through the api.

Annoying, that i chose to use a language for actively preventing leaks and dangling pointers and stuff, but end up leaking memory because of a dependency somewhere.

Been working for almost a year, really hard, on a serious attempt to make GUI development on Python fun, easy, flexible, with a full array of widgets and do it in a way that complete beginners can understand and the professionals will enjoy because it's so easy. My solution is called PySimpleGUI.
My 'rant' is the downvoting and slandering happening on places like Reddit is done by people that haven't tried to use it and most haven't installed it. Yet, they're experts in how sh*tty it is.... even though nothing stated as being a problem is truthful. When asked for more direct feedback on what's wrong, how it can be improved, the active rant threads go silent.

After an hour, had enough so google the problem. Looks like it's reasonably common and and there's a registry fix to enable the settings again.

Apply settings. Go to settings and they're all enabled!

However, they don't do anything anymore. Night light is still on.

Okay c/c++ megaminds, I have a question about how something is generally designed that I feel like is too broad for SO or to be effectively Googled (though my Google-Jitsu may just be a tad weak, idk)

Lets say I have, for example, a simple graphical interface system where each widget/ control may have child controls. We could store it as a simple list/ array/ vector/ whatever - say Widget.children

Now these children could be added with a function like addChild(Widget*). This function would accept widgets allocated both on the stack and on the heap... but only widgets allocated on the heap would need to be freed.

My question is: on the destructor of the parent widget, how would it free all of its child widgets, if some are on the stack and some are on the heap and we don't know which is which...

And my broader question is what's the general design for this sort of thing? Should all items just be heap allocated always? Should it never be the responsibility of the parent widget to free the child widgets?

Today I said to myself I should refactor and improve my personal site. Like adding widgets and shit.
I remembered why I don't do web development. I hate it, I don't know much about it, I'm bad at it, and I can't do shit if I don't get spammed with error messages. I hate that when something goes wrong everything doesn't just crash and burn but it keeps going. I know that it sounds weird but I got used to having a single line wrong and all the project crashing. And I wouldn't know whats wrong if it doesn't give me constant feedback.
I guess I will just use Django for web development then..

I've been trying Flutter the past 2days. I liked how amazing Flutter framework is but I also hated how UGLY the Dart language is. First of all, I've been doing Java(Android) and JSX(React). So, after coming from these languages, Dart seems awful. Here are the things that I hated the most:
1. JSON parsing: The worst part of Flutter/Dart. No GSON/Jackson equivalent. not even possible to make one as described in the doc
2. Redux for flutter. I tried and I hated it. So, Tried some other state management libs
3. the way static functions are written in a class
4. Widgets hiarachy
5. Ambiguity - "this context is not the context we need, we need that one to make it work. so, pass that even when you don't have it" (if you have used flutter, you will know what I mean)

So I get to work on building a client at work for industrial automation. I am building a mini hmi to show customers how our server works. The code uses opcua. The reason I am making a client is because all the opcua hmis on the market are really expensive. There is nothing less than $600. There are hmis for free out there, but none of them say they support opcua. opcua has become a major protocol in the industrial automation industry.

It took me about 2 days to gin together a client that is pretty much abstracted and will be easy to maintain. A lot of that was just learning the opcua library client code.

Now I want to create servers and clients geared toward home automation for fun and profit. I want to take sensor data from arduinos using a simple serial protocol like modbus or other protocols that are supported. Then have an opcua server that collects this data. Then finally have an opcua hmi that I develop talk to these servers. The security model is much better and would be compatible with other vendors clients/servers. I already have a game engine I want to use for the hmi portion. It has tons of widgets for displaying data, graphs, lists, text, etc. It does both 2d and 3d.

This sounds like a project that could really fun, meshes with my work learning, and provides value to people that want to automate their lives.

The other side effect is that the next time I go looking for a simple and cheap hmi that supports opcua, there will be one.

So they asked if we want a wallboard or not and we answered with a NO. As you already guessed we still got a wall mounted LG TV with a small linux box.
So I started to tinker with the wallboard and created a horrible python -> HTML5/JS stuff which crawls the data worth to show and creates static pages with html5 canvas for graphs.
Later I found atlasboard which is a discontinuated dashboard from Atlassian so started to learn nodejs and rebuilt and added new widgets to show our smoketests, our mssql server metrics from zabbix, our sprint from Jira and some other servers' status.
Then I created the essential metrics again but in Vice C64 emu, I collected and exported the data in python created a PETSCII compatible .prg file and the **** Dasboard 64 **** loaded and created graphs in the emu every minutes.
That was awesome! BASIC V2 is slow as hell but still awesome.

Recruiters often tell you to use numbers to highlight your successes. For example, "I did Programming Task ABC and increased sales of widgets by 1,000%". I'm curious how many of us actually have had access to and/or kept track of those kinds of success metrics in our prior jobs. I find myself guessing and even just making up numbers that nobody's going to have even the slightest possibility of verifying.

So I'm working on a snippet of JS to generate widgets for a custom data dashboard at the moment, in a project where I've been paired with a junior "developer" (he's more of a junior script monkey though), which is just plain painful...

Recently he wrote up a long message bitching about how my library API keeps changing, making it impossible for him to get any of his work done.. This particular message even made references to "writing his own widget library" and "stabbing me in the eye".

It's currently at version 0.1.0-ALPHA, just by the way. Major version 0 mother fucker.

Anyways, one of my colleagues stepped in the other day to try help him with the front-end stuff, which finally helped me get the feedback I was asking for. At which point we found out he's still currently working off a build I gave him 4 fucking weeks back.

Honestly though, I'd both love and hate to see him try make a library to do this: pull data from a non-standards company data API, parse said data from unnamed number arrays nested up to 4 levels deep, then morph that data into one of four different charts or one of five made up of custom markup.

All he has to do is create a UI to configure and present my widgets, but he can't even figure out how to integrate dependency management into his front-end project.

The other day I was debugging an internal app we have which is used to develop screens for an embedded device and noticed a function which enumerated the widgets on a particular screen. One would think this would be a simple task of having a local variable to keep count, assign the widgets a number, index itself, and continue. But no. The previous (and no longer employed) developer for some awful reason, created a TStringList, got the name of the widget, added it to the stringlist, used the result of the add function which returned the index, and used that result to assign widgets their index. All while creating the object and freeing it within the same function. WTF.

Man I totally forgot about this framework/lib from back in the day. I was reminded when I was installing WhatsApp on Windows. Wx Widgets, oh the memories!

Was working today when all of a sudden the background on my laptop and monitor changed from its usual mostly black image to bright white. Tried to set the desktop background, but it had no effect. Honestly thought I broke my computer for a few minutes.

Turns out one of the ubersichts (custom desktop widgets) was attempting to curl a page that was "Down for server upgrades". Definitely one of the weirder computer issues I've had.

which software/research/project you created in your free time as a hobby recently?

I personally created a small widget app that would allow users to create widgets of PDF files on their mobiles.

i have noticed a personal trend : i tend to spend my free time on language/tools/framework that are somewhat different than my daily job. I am a software engineer building sdks in my job that provide a very commercial set of features for android apps, but ended up creating an hobby app that would utilise android's other cool APIs ( storage, file, permission etc) .

before this project too i was exploring backend and web development, creating small react websites in my past time.

do you also spend time exploring outside yhe frameworks/tools used in your work life? or if not, how do you keep yourself motivated? the lateral part os important for me as i am soon going to a job where i might be exploring android APIs in daily work life and therby making android apps will become boring for me .

i remember before joining an SDK making company, i was trying to come up with an SDK myself lol, which at that time was opposite yo rhe work i was doing in the day

Hi Guys if you can share your opinion/experience in what I wrote below it would help me a lot, thanks !

Im a full-stack developer with 4 years of experience, worked with different technologies in backend, frontend, mobile etc.. so I have general knowdgele of how systems works and how they should be built.

So I work as CTO in a startup, Im for almost 2 years here I started here with minimum salary (I decided that, because they said to me we are startup and such things so I wanted to help) 2.2k Euros and it has been almost 2 years without pay rise, so last month I asked for pay rise, but they said to me that they dont have money and sent me +300 euros as gift.

One week ago I wrote to them again (co-founders) that I have a lot of pressure and I dont know if I can handle all of that for much time he told me that I got +300 euro pay rise (which it was gift from them in first place, I refused them to sent this to me), but TODAY CEO and Co-Founder wrote to again me asking if I accept +300 euro pay rise because they can afford to pay me 2.5k or if I dont accept this they can sent me 2.2k again (they think that 2.5k is maximum that they can pay me right now and that this is enough for me).

I want to ask you guys what would you do, would you accepting something like this, considering that right now Im only dev here (yes Im only dev) and Im taking care of these(yes all of these) :

1. Company Website (react js)
2. Web Admin Panel (that clients use to manage their data)(react js)
3. Web Application (that visitors use to see client data)(react js)
4. Widgets (some code that is integrated into clients websites it's same as application, but integrated directly to client website)(react js)
5. Backend of all 3 apps mentioned above (asp.net core)
6. AWS Architecture( some of services : Cognito,Lambda,RDS,API Gateway,CloudFront,S3)
7. DevOps Role

Also consider that I didnt take holidays for 1 year now working on weekends too :)

I've started using PyQT5 and I'm surprised at how easy it's been so far.

Anyone familiar with it, and if so, what kind of obstacles I can expect to encounter making custom widgets and styling?

Why building a library of React component should be this hard: I'm sick of Webpack, Babel, Typescript and all the shit which is duct taped together to build some damn widgets.

I have been learning android dev in android studio for the past 20 days from the book "Head First Android Development" and as I am starting new chapters, there are always new methods, inner classes... of new widgets getting introduced to me and it's getting hard to memorize all these stuff!

In Flutter I have to display in a ListView all the days of the current month, but starting from current day
I was thinking to get the number of days and the corresponding day (Monday, ecc.) saving them in an Array and then create the widgets dynamically in the ListView.
But I have no idea on how to achieve the corresponding day.

Is using getx's `ever` function a code smell? I'm using getx as a library rather than a framework ie state management instead of wrapping the app in it and using their widgets

My background from writing reactive code in vuex is that whenever a watched variable in the overarching store is updated, it automatically calls its listeners and re-renders the view. However, my flutter widgets remain stagnant except I explicitly mount the ever worker and call setState on a local field basically duplicating the store variable/field. It feels hacky to me tbh and leads to errors about calling setState on non-mounted screens, which I'm circumventing by checking if mounted (another hack)

It feels contrived like Band-aid over an actual problem. Is there a more natural way to propagate changes? I'm neither using getBuilder nor obx cuz a significant portion of my code entails computing stuff rather than just outputting data off an api. I want ui decisions to reside on my statefulWidget rather than migrating them to getx controller

I started using Flutter in 2020 and I'm loving the results. The learning curve is really high but the performance is nice. But coding via widgets...just feels a bit messy.
