It's me, in my hacktoberfest t-shirt, sitting on my gaming chair with gaming keyboard and mouse, working 12 hours per day for 7 days, coding and pushing bits to server so a client can be happy.21

I came home today to find my wife wearing my hacktoberfest shirt... She said it was soft and looked girly so she was stealing it. At least I still have the stickers.8
-
I am happy!
Participated in Hacktoberfest for the first time, and now, the t-shirt (which, btw, looks pretty nice imo) is on its way! Can't wait!
Thanks to the people who organize these sort of events ❤️😁2 -
Father devrant I have a confession to make:
I stayed up until 12 in the midnight during Sep 30 to do 4 PRs immediately once it was October 1 in under 1 hour...
Now I passed out on the classroom and people think I got possesed

Got this SendGrid Hacktoberfest tshirt a week ago, but forgot to post it here!
The design is so coder-ish!11 -
Hacktoberfest time, and I usually try to contribute by creating some trivial issues and labelling them as such - ones that I could fix in 2 seconds, just to help those starting out get a pull request and get used to how the process works. Like, we're talking *really* trivial - remove superfluous import statements, that sort of thing. In most of these I list exactly what needs to be changed.
This guy picks, what's probably the *easiest* of these tasks going, and then comes back saying he's got some questions. Dude, seriously?! It's right there in the damn issue description.
Whatever, I decide to be nice and I say he's welcome to ask. Brace myself for answering some stupid crap, but fine, we were all new once.
THE GUY COMES BACK AND SAYS HE NEEDS A CALL. A call, seriously? What is this crap? I do you a favour by letting you create a trivial PR, and you want me to literally burn my time & jump on a call to take you through step by step what to do?! Pff, and people wonder why I'm grumpy most of the time.11 -
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt
From Microsoft
Received by contributing to Microsoft Github repositories7 -
DigitalOcean's and Microsoft's Hacktoberfest done!
And my computer got so slow for some reason.
(Presses Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
Oh shit.3 -
I made it! 5 pull requests for Hacktoberfest :) .
I'm super happy because until now I really didn't know how to help other projects or even have the motivation, but now I can say I have helped a few get their code right :P7 -
I was having this poetic exchange with the maintainer of a vscode extension.
I guess he didn't see it coming... 😛👨💻1 -
Well, I know you guys are tired of all the Hacktoberfest rants but I got mine this morning and I'm excited! Guess you gotta deal with it 😂😂😅4
-
Already 3/4 with PRs for Hacktoberfest 😏
This stuff brings me back to the days when software used to be fun and not driven by absolutely clueless clowns in big-wig management clowntown. 🥲2 -
How to attract new open source contributors:
Label you repository issues with "hacktoberfest" and see them coming.3 -
It's the last day of hacktoberfest and I got to know that my repository was listed in digital ocean's list of "top repositories with highest number of pull requests".
Feels good :D1 -
When u finished 80018939018282983 pull requests on a single day hoping to get extra stickers for Hacktoberfest..3
-
I didn't manage to win a Hacktoberfest 2020 shirt because I don't use GitHub anymore (and they require that apparently) - but I figured I might as well have a go at it.
echo "- an amazing project" >> README.md

*drum rolls*
1st day of 2018
Received the most awaited goodies
PS. Haven't started coding this year yet.4 -
My kinda start to an amazing new year! 😍
Just received my Hacktoberfest t-shirt and stickers. Cheers to open source!6 -
🐙/* Friendly reminder */ 🐙
Don't forget about Hacktoberfest, a great way of giving back to the open source community 👨👩👧👦. And remember, if you create at least 4 pull request you'll get a t-shirt! 👕👚4 -
HacktoberFest is a scam where people just come to get a tshirt and thus decreasing the importance of open source 😐😶5
-
Classmate : *Makes trashy PR on my repo to get hacktober PR*
Me : *is disgusted, guides him what to add in the PR to make it better*
Classmate : ok, *closes PR*
<4 Hours later>
Classmate : *new PR, this time worse and wants me to merge*
Me : (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻1 -
I'm there trying to find some easy to solve issues for hacktoberfest and github be like. Nah Man !1
-
My hacktoberfest t-shirt was delivered yesterday and so I wore it today.
People asked me if it had something to do with minced meat because of the German word 'hackfleisch'.1 -
Does anybody know of other contests like google code-in, summer of code and hacktoberfest? Not things like codewars. Any type pf contests with large tasks that are challenging. Thanks!1
-
I completed my 4 pull requests for hacktoberfest and guess what all of them got approved. Yayyy!!
So these are the issues which I fixed in hacktoberfest2019.
1. Fixed readme of imba
2. Fixed the script of devTea
3. Added screenshots for the same (2)
4. Helped a friend with a blockchain script.
Thanks a lot!! @devTea, for giving me the chance.5 -
Heya,
College is no place to chill and be laid back as shown in movies. The reality is that it is more challenging than school with peer pressure being no stranger to us.
Being a newbie in the tech domain, and being a girl, I felt the gender gap and the intimidation newbies like me go through when we see legit programmers who flaunt their skills and make it obvious that they exactly know what they are doing.
But along with all this ranting, for all the newbies out there, remember that this phase too shall pass and its not as scary as it seems (I kept convincing myself).
Always start with something easy and take baby steps, one good coding language to start with would be python, as it is more understandable and less intimidating and complex-looking than languages like C and C++.
I still struggle, but there are times when it gave me great joy like the time I developed an app with Flutter or when I managed to grab a free tee from hacktoberfest 2019.
Stay home and Stay safe buddy ;)
P.S: If you a dev and want some cool swags check the website devswag, you won't be disappointed :)10 -
Taking advice from devRant and just working on some documentation for hacktoberfest. Well until I can find a project that I want to add code to1
-
next hacktoberfest: prepare CoC and generated PR descriptions, splash vomit it onto everybody who participated and offers high difficulty merge only rewards - PR and get it merged - if they don't merge it, tag some twitter accounts automatically based on hair color and ping some news outlets via twitter and mail. 🙂1
-
Damn, there's so many different Hacktoberfest t-shirts available this year. Time to sit down and go "clothes shopping" I guess!
https://devswag.io/2 -
I have two contributions so far in my first hacktoberfest. I have created a readme and updated a .gitignore to ignore VSCode’s .vscode file, just in case anyone else who wanted to contribute that uses VSCode doesn’t have to worry about the .vscode file3
-
Hacktoberfest has started today.
If you have an open source project label your issues with "devRant" or link your project here. This way people new to open source projects can help in a project by people they know.

After a rough exit from one company, I was diverted into Ops just to continue to have food on the table and keeping the lights on. This, over time, unfortunately made me more or less unemployable as a dev again. Got stuck in that place 13 years doing almost no professional coding.
During the last 5 years I took courses, got side jobs writing articles and tutorials, went to interviews and generally worked hard to get the fuck out of ops and into development again.
After getting to choose between level 1 customer support and quitting in a re-org, I quit without having a new gig. I got a lucky break through someone I'd worked with earlier to start a junior position working on some legacy systems with legacy tech.
After all that work late nights churning away using up my passion for coding, I now can't make my self pick up even Advent of code or Hacktoberfest... My passion is dead... I hope I get it back, but for now I fill my spare time with my guitar...3 -
[Hardware geeks, microcontroller geeks, please come]
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt...
Gotcha? (I bet you know who I am)
Just kidding. Just a random project idea I am not sure if it is possible to make from scratch.
It is essentially a usb external storage
About 32gb
And has a lcd that shows available storage space
And some buttons to play snake. (Yup)
Is it possible?
What should I expect when creating from scratch? (Microcontroller, c language, interfaces, etc)13 -
Reason for rejected pull request on hacktoberfest: "wrong commit message"
...are you fucking dumb or what?
damn robot machine clowns, you wonder why you don't get better at your craft
"we love open source, making it so prohibitively convoluted to participate!!! why won't anyone contribute to our repo?!?!?!"
clowns, absolutely everywhere i swear10 -
Trying to redeem my free hacktoberfest shirt. Click the link in the email, pick my size, hit continue, and I'm immediately met with "this website is under heavy load" and the request fails... That's embarrassing.2
-
So I participated in this year's Hacktoberfest and it was really cool. Gonna get a free t-shirt and stickers for completing the October challenge. Hacktoberfest 2019 was presented by DigitalOcean and Dev and 4 pull requests were required to be made by you in any GitHub-hosted repositories/projects to get the free swags. It was open globally. I feel events like this encourages budding developers to learn more and exposes them to new ideas. Anybody else out there who participated in the Hacktoberfest? Still waiting for my t-shirt :'(3
-
Searching "hacktoberfest" issues on GitHub. I pull one up and see the repo was created 6 hours ago and has 47 issues all with the label hacktoberfest. Looks like someone is begging for contributors.5
-
Till now, hacktoberfest has been really bad more me.
Why so?
I got 4 PRs for my project, out which 3 were identical.
I reviewed them and commented to fix the bugs. The Unit Tests are failing and they don't bother to send out a correct PR. And they don't even bother to fix them and respond. They just want to make 4 PRs to get the free T-Shirt.
Just finish the PR and make it pushed to the mainline.2 -
I never thought big about Whitespaces until Hacktoberfest came by.
Fed up with the amount of PR and notifications I am getting on my repo . Most of the time they create a PR to create a Whitespace and then delete it . Now I have put up a Repository to at least add some joke instead of those Whitespaces11 -
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt
From Auth0
Received by improving documentation and the product itself
(The tshirt is darker than the image)3 -
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt
From DigitalOcean / GitHub / Twillo
Received by contributing to various open source projects!
Open source rocks!3 -
Fuckin'A how it takes 1 t-shirt from hacktoberfest to make everyone loose their shit and start actively contributing to Open Source projects on Github.2
-
Indian developers were committing hundreds of garbage pull requests to get a free Hacktoberfest t-shirt.
Meanwhile repository admins:2 -
damn
even hacktoberfest is going woke this year
no more t-shirts
some stupid digital pin probably that can forever spew out CO2 somewhere on some server farm in iceland or something
to be clear, i'm not a climate change denyer. but it stupid shit like this as to why we can't have nice things. all the incentives are backwards. change my mind
would have been the 5th shirt too... 😉
i'll probably print myself one anyway13 -
Don't even have enough stickers to cover my fridge :(
#sedLyf
unixstickers, github, hacktoberfest, freeTshirt, devfolio8 -
bitter reflections from a bitter dev on hacktoberfest this year (in the past 2 hours of trying to find issues my IQ has at least halved):
- DefinitelyTyped - used to be my bread and butter to complete hacktoberfest; now, not sure if actual issue, or person just doesn't know how to use typescript (found a multiple such issues that were actually non-issues, the type they were asking for was right there, no pull request needed)
- avoid "issues" on no code / low code tools, these are toxic issues with titles like "I EXPLAIN BUG HERE", then probably not even a bug / more a feature request or clueless clown
- if your entire contributor team has the same character styled profile pic + background, i can't take you seriously; if your identity is so closely tied with what github team you are on... uh, i mean cmon what is this kindergarten? (also love the fact that an anon managed to get themselves mixed in hahahaha they ruined it perfectly!)
- most 'hacktoberfest' issue finders themselves are broken or don't load anything
- people claim issues and then never return YAWN
- the hacktoberfest discord: the projects channel is mostly people promoting their garbage repo WHICH HAS 0 OPEN ISSUES IN THE FIRST PLACE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and then OTHER people promoting their own portfolio on hacktoberfest???!! 😂😂😂😂 yeah bro i'm gonna help you with your own portfolio site GTFO
from what i've seen, i think i can start working approximately 5 minutes a day and be more successful than these absolute 🎪🤡🤹♂️ devs
sure, there is being a beginner, and there is being a clown salesmen trying to get people to do work for you... i mean wtf is going on
i WANT to help and contribute, but this year its really a struggle to find anything worthwhile to contribute to!
somehow the spark is gone... this might be my last Hacktoberfest... let me just return to my wisky and be in peace4 -
Just submitted my first ever pull request on GitHub. Here I am frantically waiting for it to get rejected or take my first step towards the Hacktoberfest shirt 😁1
-
Enjoying the hacktoberfest. Thank you guys for ranting about it. Or else I wouldn't have known about it. Done with the 4 PRs. Still looking forward to contribute more.
-
So I have done some solo projects and some group projects now and I saw that Hacktoberfest was on so I went and signed up. I saw some of the things todo and got overwhelmed with the code on the repo. What do you guys think I should start off with in terms of open source projects. I want to get into some open source projects but don't know what to look for or where to start. Any help would be appreciated.1

Hacktoberfest this year
Too lazy to do contributions
I shall rest this year
And managing to get the swags is cumbersome, international shipping sucks especially when tracking isn't provided -
Hacktoberfest is out of shirts already. It is a bit weird to be sad about not getting a free T-Shirt and borderline choosing-beggar, but damn this year's shirt looks sick.
I feel a bit cheated :(1 -
GitHub is down. How about we put this as an issue?
Maybe some desperate genius doing the hacktoberfest challenge would save the sinking world of open source. -
Me: I want a T-shirt
CodewithHarry: Register yourself at Hacktoberfest and contribute to Opensource by Making PRs on the only Readme file again and again6 -
Hacktoberfest ist starting!
You can get a free Tshirt when contributing!
More info @ https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/.........
btw I seem to be to stupid to find anything I could help with, so no shirt for me = /3 -
Things that bring happiness when earned.

I read this post somewhere where this son of a bitch created 4 5 accounts, then submitted fake PRs across those accounts to each other during Hacktoberfest.
People like these are fucking losers absolutely destroying the credibility of a event like Hacktoberfest.
People like them would sell of their own fucking soul for a T shirt
Do you agree?3 -
Every basic girl: Omg I love fall! You have Halloween, the leaves start to fall and the temperature are finally getting more chilled.
Me: haCKtObErfESt!!!3 -
My first ever pull request on a public repo on github just got merged. The suspense is killing me. Three more to go for the free shirt...4
-
Which programming contests or scholarships (for conferences, etc.) do zu know of?
For example Hacktoberfest, GCI, WWDC, etc2 -
Thank you community for letting me know about Digital Ocean's Hacktoberfest. Since I have been contributing a lot to open source lately, I got a mail as soon as I registered for Hacktoberfest that I have successfully submitted 4 PRs. Now patiently waiting for my swags. 😀
-
It’s so funny when a cloud service company makes a promotion and its services doesn’t scale to support the traffic
-
Finally got my Hacktoberfest care package!! Thought it'd never arrive...
Anyone know a good way to get more stickers? Or personal preference as to where to buy them?3 -
I guess this won't be new to any person here, specially this being a community of well-versed devs. But here it goes:
Its hacktoberfest time!! Make 5 contributions to public repositories and stand chance to win awesome swags and t-shirts from digitalocean.com !! 🎉🎊🎉
I have created a simple repo for beginners . Make a pull request now! https://github.com/root-ansh/...
Do share this message with other awesome devs! Let's make this October awesome🔥💯5 -
lets see...
would i like the glenfidditch 12 year for 45 EUR?
or the laphroaig 10 year for 50 EUR?
😂
seems like a no-brainer to me (and trust me, i have NO brain)
inb4 fullstackcircus is an alcoholic, we already know that
go hang out with the OTHER hacktoberfest participants and tell me something i don't know10 -
Yet another probably final Hacktoberfest swag
From Umbraco
Received by improving documentation
Thanks to Umbraco for sending stickers which were missing in my pack ^v^ -
I'm not that into open source contributions, but the hacktoberfest campaign this year caught my attention. There are so many challenges and events happening... I thought I should give it a try.
So far I got 2 t-shirts and had more fun than I thought.1 -
Sometimes, I feel my school is a prison.
I'm sitting there, 8-10 hours per day, learnin' things I already know, and all I can do is sitting quiet to `don't disturb during the lesson`. I can't even use my laptop.
But, school also is nice in some ways, my principal allowed me to run a Hacktoberfest event in my school, make kinda radio in our school and make an app for our SmartTV (yep, we have a TV in school) to show weather, changes in lesson plans etc.
But still, I really feel this is the prison. One more year, and I'll finish this shit and go...to another school because `you need to graduate to do anything in your life`. Btw, do ya know any good ways how to become CTO or COO one day? Just asking. Greetings, I hate my school, have a nice day.10 -
For folks who are participating in #Hacktoberfest this year, here's a good resource to keep tabs on everything that's on the table: https://producthunt.com/posts/...1
-
Does anyone have some small projects I can contribute to for Hacktoberfest? I'm having some problems finding anything that doesn't have a humongous codebase or is dead.8
-
I haven't received my hacktoberfest tee yet... Does anyone else haven't got it or is it just only me?3
-
guys, hacktoberfest is around and i am looking for a fairly new android repo for which i can contribute (because that'd be fairly ez :/)
pls comment down a github repo of a new android repo(based on java)...... plsplsplsplspls1 -
I want to participate in Hacktoberfest but I don’t know what I want to contribute to :/ I’m still very new to open source so when I stumble into what they want me to add but immediately I get intimidated.6
-
Have you guys received your hacktoberfest 2018 shirt already?
Kind of irritated because my shirt is stuck on Frankfurt, Germany, and it's been a month now. Do you think it's stuck on German customs?2 -
#Hacktoberfest is about to end, and soon devrant would be filled with rants of people showing off their shirts and stickers... yeah, I'll be one of them. :P2
-
Okay, so last to last week I came across Hacktoberfest's advert somewhere on the web. I was so excited to know about the cool stickers and tshirts that companies let out on doing some simple work that I posted PRs in many companies repos and here I am completing the task for devRant. Please help me get some :D
Thanks a lot!! -
The countdown for Hacktoberfest has started, the only difference is that this time you can opt-out of taking the Hacktober fest tshirt and help plant a tree instead.2
-
Hey guys, I want the t-shirt of hactoberfest, please if anyone of you have anything for me to contribute in your repositories, let me know.
Even if it's a small typo, I'm in.rant help please help me story github in-need pull requests hacktoberfest open source github issues developer24 -
What to do if the repository maintainer taking a lot of time for accepting pull request of hacktoberfest?5
-
Does anyone have an OS project I can collaborate for this hacktoberfest?
Does any open source project work or there are some specific?2 -
Did anyone participate in last year's Hacktoberfest? I'm trying to figure out how they're going to send out that many shirts. The number has to be in the thousands.
-
I think from next year hacktoberfest should do something like LudumDare does.
That is, the users which contribute should be able to review other people's PRs and rate them on multiple factors (0-5) like: Appropriateness, Contribution level, Spam level, Effort level etc.1
