When you start reading someone else's code and all you do is properly indent for the first 30 mins so you can actually read it.15

Friend: Dude, could you look at my code, see what's wrong??
Me: Its not indented. Indent is properly first..10 -
Spaces Vs Tabs - A real world case.
So one of the menial tasks I was given here was to take a pretty mock and turn it into an HTML email template. Needless to say, I hate emails and HTML.
After many weeks of trial and error, rejection and tweaks, we're doing our final tests when someone noticed that Google's clients are chopping off the footer and saying "View Full Email".
A few searches yield that Google has a 102KB cut off for email size. We did some checks and found that we were at 104KB. I immediately thought it was my CSS inliner being a little too verbose, but as I went in to edit things, I noticed that the file was intended with spaces!
Now I'm a fan of Silicon Valley, and I recalled an episode from this past season where Richard mentioned something about saving file size by using tabs. I had never really considered that point.
So I went back into VSCode and told it to convert all of the individual templates that make up this giant email to indent with tabs...
The file size dropped from 104kb to 82kb.
I wasn't very polarized on the Tabs vs Spaces debate, but this here has given me a nice real world example as to why tabs rule.20 -
"Do not indent HTML files."
- From a Junior High classmate of mine who claims he is a computer wizard[this was many years ago]4 -
Friend: "I use spaces to indent"
Every self respecting programmer: "I think we can no longer be friends"17 -
I had a coworker used to write PHP pages in this way:
<?php
echo "<html>";
echo "<head>";
// 2000+ lines of un-indented nightmares
I tried suggesting him to keep the HTML outside php tags as much as possible and I stressed out that adding some indentation to the code would have improved readability. I also sent him an example of my code created using an IDE with auto-indent functionality.
His creepy answer was: «Readability is subjective. Anyway I'll try to get used to the sinusoidal trend of your code.»11 -
My friend loves Dreamweaver... And continuously says that he doesn't understand what people see in it that is so wrong... It does the job right?...... Fucking blind...
Uses a bootstrap plugin which generates HTML code for bootstrap.
I did not know this at the time.
Comes to me the night before submission.
He: Dude i need help quick! I've got the presentation tomorrow morning and bootstrap fucked up the links to my style sheets or something, my page is broken and won't work. I should have done what you did and gone for Foundation...
Me: Yeah, because the bootstrap framework definitely affects the style links...
He: help me out man, please! I can't do this anymore!
I had my submission the day after him to prepare still...
Me: Teamviewer. Now.
Log on to Teamviewer.
See what he's using to code...
Dreamweaver..... Niiiiice....
I go through the code. There are empty divs with &nbsc; in them everywhere.. some HTML elements haven't been closed, no comments, indentation seems to be completely random. All the usual shit storm of a novice web designer.
The only thing is, this guy I know knows how to indent, I've seen his previous work. Why is this so horrible then???
I ask what the hell happened, it looked like a nuclear explosion happened!
He: Yeah I'm using this great plugin for Dreamweaver which lets me click and it puts in Bootstrap elements! It's great!
........ You're blaming the bootstrap framework for affecting your links to your stylesheets, you're using an elements generator, you're not checking what the FUCK it puts into your code, not fixing the indenting, not checking the standard HTML rules are followed AND YOU WONDER WHY IT'S BROKEN???
Kill me now.4 -
Are there other handy DDG in-Apps like this one (which i did not know existed before i found it by chance)9

If you indent like this, I'm going to find you, and I'm going to kill you.
My eyes are already sore, 12 minutes after arriving to the office.20 -
*tries to SSH into my laptop to see how that third kernel compilation attempt went*
… From my Windows box.
Windows: aah nope.
"Oh God maybe the bloody HP thing overheated again"
*takes laptop from beneath the desk indent*
… Logs in perfectly. What the hell... Maybe it's SSH service went down?
$ systemctl status sshd
> active (running)
Well.. okay. Can I log in from my phone?
*fires up Termux*
*logs in just fine*
What the fuck... Literally just now I added the laptop's ECDSA key into the WSL known_hosts by trying to log into it, so it can't be blocked by that shitty firewall (come to think of it, did I disable that featureful piece of junk yet? A NAT router * takes care of that shit just fine Redmond certified mofos).. so what is it again.. yet another one of those fucking WanBLowS features?!!
condor@desktop $ nc -vz 192.168.10.30 22
Connection to 192.168.10.30 22 port [tcp/ssh] succeeded!
ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL?!
Fucking Heisen-feature-infested piece of garbage!!! Good for gaming and that's fucking it!
Edit: (*) this assumes that your internal network doesn't have any untrusted hosts. Public networks or home networks from regular users that don't audit their hosts all the time might very well need a firewall to be present on the host itself as well.17 -
This just makes me mad every time.
I have a friend who asks for help in coding and just reads and copies my whole code, doesn't even understand what's going on and just copies the whole damn thing (the variable names too). Also, says I don't know how to do it properly because I indent the code and he wants it all in a single line.
If there is any error in the code, just tells me that there is a problem and does nothing and keeps nagging me if I solved the problem every 2 minutes.
Once I solve the problem, just copies the stuff again and then brags to others about the code and takes all the credit.
After bragging, if someone asks him for help he just tried to match the code line by line and worry by word. And tells them their code is wrong if they are using a different method of solving the problem and asks them to do it like him.
Being an introvert, I don't go shoving my stuff in others faces and criticising their code.
But the professor knows I am good, so that works for me. :)17 -
University tells me that I have to indent 4 spaces... If I use anything else I get disqualified...6
-
1. Indent with 3 spaces to fuck both tabs guys and spaces guys git repos.
2. Use windows line endings and laugh and laugh and laugh.
3. Giant full page ascii art intro on every single file.
4. After the giant ascii art intro there are literally zero comments.
5. Keep the bracket on the same line for getters, but on the next line for setters because fuck you.17 -
If programming languages had honest slogans, what would they be?
C: If you want a horse, make sure you feed it, clean it and secure it yourself. No warranties.
C++: If you want a horse, you need to buy a circus along with it.
Java: Before you buy a horse - buy a piece of land, build a house in that land, build a barn beside the house & if you are not bankrupt yet, buy the horse and then put the horse in the barn.
C#: You don’t want a horse, but Microsoft wants you to have a horse. Now it’s up to you if you want Microsoft or not.
Swift: Don’t buy an overpriced Unicorn if all you wanted was a horse.
JavaScript: If you want to buy a horse & confidently ride it, make sure you read a book named "You don't know horse".
PHP: After enough optimization, your horse can compete the top most horses in the world; but deep down, you'll always know it's an ass.
Hack: Let's face it, even if you take the ass from the ass lovers and give them back a horse in exchange, not many will ride it.
Ruby: If you want a horse, make sure you ride it on top of rail roads, even if the horse can't run fast on rails.
Python: Don't ride your horse and eat your sandwich on the same line, until you indent it on the next line.
Bash: Your horse may shit everywhere, but at least it gets the job done.
R: You are the horse. R will ride you.

Refactoring code of somebody who left and:
- Plagued the code with TYPOS (milions of them but ok I can live with those... to a certain point)
- Used global variables by default.... of course even where they're not needed
- Used comments only in parts of code where... well they're not needed, important ones are of course left out
- Did not indent code. 3..2..1... Did not FUCKING indent code properly and when he did... did WRONG!
- Instead of indentation he used commented line with multiple ==== signes.... so far top is 60 consecutive lines with olny ==== again no apparent pattern here
- Did not follow a fucking standard in variable naming... no camle casing... there are varaibles assigned multiple times to "temp" variables without no reason just for the sake of wasting resources on the system I guess
This is just the beginning of the review but I already want to change job, die, scream, cry... not in any specific order.10 -
Bezelless displays are a joke. Even the regular displays like this one from my laptop don't need nearly as much bezel as they're usually given.
The black indent at the top of the picture is hiding the display controller, which can easily be moved to the back. The rest of it.. a little bit of internal frame to keep the LCD intact during impacts on the outer case but that's about it.11 -
Why in the flying motherfuck can't people remember the fact that other people might have to read their code?! If you're not gonna name things properly, and mess everything up with utterly useless and garbage comments (all comments are useless and garbage), then the least you can do is fucking format and indent it properly!! GAWD FAKKIN' DAMNIT!!4
-
Students shouldn't be told to write a program in a notebook. -_- I remember those days when I used to write C++ programs and my indent was going to the next page of the notebook.
Something like this:11 -
I'm just C# boy, born and raised in a .Net world ... Today I started some stuff with JavaScript, downloaded the JavaScript standard extension for using in Vs code... It made me do things...it made indent each new line by 2 spaces! Not 4 or a tab but 2! And then what really took the fucking biscuit, it said I couldn't end my statements with semi colons! I need a strong cup of tea and a sit after that shit. How is that at all useful to anyone!? It just made it make less sense!!!!10
-
When I hear, "master/slave" I don't think about terminology and syntax for a programming language I dislike because of its silly functional indent requirements. I think of jumper settings on IDE hard disks in the '90s. Primary master, secondary master, primary slave, secondary slave.2
-
I am not a front end developer. Don't have the skill set, but I am learning. Work assigns me an "easy" task of modifying someone else's angular code(with all those <div> tags) to change some functionality. If it was well formatted, easy shit.
WHY THE FUCK DID THE PREVIOUS FUCKER INDENT LIKE THEY HATE ME? PARENT TAGS ARE FARTHER OUT THAN CHILDREN TAGS. SOME OF THE TAGS ARE 10 TABS FROM THE LEFT, WHILE THEIR CHILD IS ONLY 2. IN ADDITION, ALL THEIR CODE IS COPY PASTED FROM OTHER FILES, REFERENCES CONTROLLERS FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE CODE IT DOESNT NEED!
I am tempted to kill it with fire, find the person who wrote it(on a different continent), kill them, and then rewrite the whole thing in a language I am still learning. FUCK!2 -
In my uni course "Algorithms and Data structures" we use Java. Fine. Definitely not my preferred language but it's not like I have a choice.
Anyway, our teacher uploads code files for us to use as reference/examples. The problem is, they look like this. Not only does she not indent the code, she also uses a charset that is not utf-8.
In the rare cases where she does indent the code, she uses THREE, yes THREE spaces...24 -
When you screw up the Python indentation beyond repair, and you have to re-indent 100s of lines of code -_-15
-
Me: Why did you exit the build?
Webpack (W): Build exited with code 2 - Eslint error at 2:1 in *filename*.scss 'Expected 2 line indent'
Me: internally *ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? YOU FAILED OVER AN ESLINT STYLING!!!* *curses out original dev profusely under breath while fixing styling*4 -
Oh man where to start:
Not wanting to use LINQ because he did not wanted to "download external dependencies"
Not wanting to use prepared statements on their php sql code, and refusing to use pdo because they will "always use mysql"(moved to postgreSQL shortly after I left)
For some reason including a php file that only had ?>......thats it....only ?>
Use c++ but refused to learn oop and use structs for everything, importing stdio.h and printf everything.....like really?
Maybe just nitpicking, but refusing to use the recyclerview pattern on am android app. The implementation was faster after I made the change.
Importing a library for promises instead of using the ones already in the language(JS)
Changing the style of aaaaall p tags instead of using classes as well as refusing to use divs in place of p tags...well...fuck
Not indent his ASP classic code
Use notepad on his asp classic code
Use ASP Classic in 2017, even for new projects6 -
Dear intern, if you really really have the urge to use fucking spaces for indentation because it let's you feel like being some Google hipster, then PLEASE AT LEAST REMOVE THE SPARE ONES WHEN YOU FUCKING COPY PASTE CODEBLOCKS!!!1!!1111!
I'm perfectly OK if people wanna use spaces if they use it in an OCD-proof manner.
Nah, let's be honest: Spaces are a filthy way to indent stuff. Tabs are in a lot ways superior and if an editor can't render tabs correctly, the editor is a piece of worm puke.2 -
When working with really annoying devs that I know feel strongly about using either spaces or tabs, I sometimes "accidently" uses the opposite indent style when commiting.3
-
I see a lot of arguments out there over 2 space, 4 space and tab indents but I think the really problem are the people that double tab. Yes they exist and yes they are the real scum of the earth
-
So, first time ranting, sorry if I mess anything up.
When I first started my current job and got introduced to the system we were coding in, something seemed a little fishy to me. Didn't like the system anyway, but at least the language is a compiler language, so it runs quite quickly, right?
In theory, yeah. If the lead dev liked the IDE that came with it. But he has to REALLY fucking hate it, because rather than using it, he codes in plaintext. No syntax highlighting, no auto-indent, nothing. And he's built the entire damn system around doing that. Sadly the compiler is only integrated into the IDE, so what do we do there? Copy the code from the plaintext file to the IDE to compile it there? No no, why would you. The language has a function you can use to compile some code at runtime.
And so he does. Every. Single. Fucking. Script. There's a single main script that runs and finds the correct textfile to then runtime-compile and execute. So we effectively made a compiler language into a massively unoptimized interpreter lang.
I even mentioned that this might be a problem, but I was completely dismissed, so at that point it's not my problem anymore and I have then switched to a different system anyway.
Couple weeks later I heard the same guy complaining that the scripts were running almost the whole night so we'd probably need some better hardware or something.
Well if only there was a really obvious solution that would improve the performance by probably about a factor of 20 or so...13 -
Project in college, many moons ago.
Team is building a robot for a project. Nothing too crazy, it does some simple tasks like walk along a path and shit.
3 weeks for the project. 3 team members.
The largest graded part of the project is the ability to follow a path based on vision.
The 3rd member INSISTS on doing that part, he says “I want to prove to the professor that I am the smartest in the class so he helps me get a work term.”
Of course, my other partner and I see this as the complete selfishness of a child who will never be employed anywhere worth talking about anyways. He is a big asshole about it and we end up giving in.
## Week 1
We get our parts done (working together the way a team would) without his help.
He struggles, hits walls, complains. You know, dumbass grown child stuff...
## Week 2
We offer to help since we are done. He refuses. The teacher sees all of this and doesn’t like it at all.
After class the 2 of us go to the teacher and let him in on the details. The guy insisted, he is struggling and will not take help etc.
Teacher goes and talks to him and tells him it is a team project for a reason and that we should be helping. He says yes.
Then he misses the rest of the classes that week and send an email saying...
“Since everyone decided to keep interrupting me and breaking my train of thought, I could not get anything done in class. Therefore I will be staying home to finish the project from there.”
And to top it off, he didn’t even take home the robot’s connectors he needed to do the damn thing. Haha.
## Week 3
We know he wasn’t going to get it done, so we approached the teacher. We make it clear that we have done all we can and that we are not ok with losing marks because of this.
Since we are both good students that he likes, he decides to give us an option.
You can take a 50% on his part even if he doesn’t get it done (for trying to help) or we can do it ourselves and he won’t get the marks if he doesn’t finish.
## Night before
We say fuck it and do the thing.
In fact, since we were learning Java at the time we decided to do it in Java. Our other prof sees us playing with robots and gets excited, he stays with us and suggest improvements.
In the end we rewrite all 3 robot functionalities in Java and hand in the project the next day.
## The day of
Partner 3 comes into class and says this...
“That walking path part is impossible, I didn’t get it done, but I bet nobody else did either. So at least we will get a 60% on the other 2 parts!” (With a big shit eating grin)
Prof calls our group up. We walk up and the prof looks at the 3rd guy and says.
“Since you have decided to do your part alone, we will have you present your part alone at the end of the groups”
He tries to say something but the prof cuts him off and tells him to sit down.
We show all of our code and the robot does everything perfectly.
Groups go by, now it’s that guys turn.
He says that the walking part was impossible but seems to realize right away that he just saw EVERY other group get it working.
The teacher ask him to stay after class.
## Result
We got a 98 (prof said he was hoping we would have done in VB like asked but he liked the result a lot).
Other guy gets a 5% for his non-working spaghetti code on 0s on the other 2 sections. He blames us, of course.
Bonus Content:
That same asshat above once said this to me...
“I don’t indent my code so that if I work for a company and no one else can understand the code then I am unfireable!”
Yes, he wrote all code like this...
const Example = () => {
Stuff
More stuff
For() {
Stuff
If() {
Stuff
}
}
}
Fuck that guy🖕🏽3 -
Yesterday, i had to use neovim for a task on my friend's laptop. There was no WiFi and I couldn't install Emacs. This guy uses Vim a lot. He recently moved to neovim from vim. He had some Ruby codes going. I had to debug some codes(performance issues). I was reluctant to work on it but i had to. After looking at some keybindings and the plugins that guy had written, using vim was pleasure. It was fast. I could shoot up multiple terminals work on that and was instant. I wrote some plugins to indent my code which worked as it's supposed to. I used spacemacs(as it's configured properly) Emacs but there is some load time on spacemacs and there are some issues shooting up multiple spacemacs on terminals. I had just configured and started using prelude which is beautiful Emacs configuration and is fast.
After using neovim that day something hit me that i had blindly had faith in Emacs without using Vim and i use Emacs only for text editing task and terminal. I don't use it for listening music, browser and other task i can always use modern browsers and Spotify for that. Modern browsers and music players are amazing and using those in Emacs there is always a lack of functionality and UI.(modern people don't use those i think and some Emacs users i know use stripped down version of Emacs i.e. microemacs or XEmacs.
I know vi is present by default on every Linux distribution. That keybindings are same as vim and it can be configured so, it is useful for embedded devices and system architecture. I love terminals and love working on tty. That's why i guess i felt instantly tempted to keep on using vim and i loved it's performance. I checked on evil layer before but there are some issues with evil layer in Emacs like it isn't too efficient like vim. I love lisp though and clojure can be edited nicely in Vim.
Is this sin against the church of Emacs? Should i join vi vi vi? I have already dedicated my life on Emacs (check my bio). Am i tempted by the devil?4 -
Last year I had to program most of my projects in Python. I like the language, don't get me wrong. But man oh man if you indent your line of code one too many fucking times, it can be such a pain in the ass to find your error...
Even if it may clutter your code (not in my opinion), that's why I love them curly brackets and languages which use them <39 -
For the love of Jeebus and all his holyness!!
These fuckers, that I've been studying with for the last semester need to get there shit together!
It's one thing that they want to discuss every single thing and NOT come to a different conclusion after a couple of hours....
BUT I fucking draw the fucking line in the dirt, when you shit eating wimps "forget" to format your code and do the worst half-assed job I have ever seen!
Why the fuck would you only indent half of the lines, without any sort of system?!?
And what is this? A huge fucking bunch of random spaces and tabs at the end of a line? Jeebus, save me! -
I was telling someone who never indents any of his code to indent it properly.. He was like "Why should I do that? Will it make my code run faster?"4
-
So I'm a new CS student diving head first into programming. I've already made my choice in terms of what language to learn and indent style (bracket gets its own line 😁), but I'm having trouble choosing between vim and emacs...
Without this devolving into a flame war, could we have a discussion on the pros and cons of each editor? I'm curious to see what other developers use and their experiences with each of these editors.28 -
Just watched episode 3-6 of silicon valley, where Richard loses his girl over tabs vs spaces. Made me kind of mad.
How the fuck is tabs vs spaces still a struggle? Unless you're using fucking Notepad++ to code, your IDE will FUCKIN REPLACE TABS WITH SPACES! IF YOU INDENT WITH SOMETIMES THREE, SOMETIMES FOUR SPACES, THEN BURN IN HELL! JUST USE YOUR IDE WITH YOUR TAB KEY AND END THE WAR!2 -
started using vim just for shits and I gotta say it's been a massive pain in the ass.
wanted to indent like 7 blocks of code at once. 20 minutes later I've tried several methods, none of which indent it 4 spaces like the rest of my file.
there's like 15 different ways to indent shit. Jesus Christ.
then I had to sift through countless people in heated vim debates on SO.
I am not worthy9 -
Why the flying fuck does one indent Java code with two spaces? Coding standards exist for a reason, for fuck's sake!4
-
I hate ppl who don't indent code and those who don't add proper comments to explain three crap that they've created6

I really really hope that no one post this,a friend texted it to me and I wanted to share it because made my day.
Idk where it comes, so feel free if know where this came from to post it:

# Do not refactor, it is a bad practice. YOLO

*The Pigeon Methodology*
Boss flies in, shits all over everything, then flies away.
*ADD (Asshole Driven Development)*
An old favourite, which outlines any team where the biggest jerk makes all the big decisions. Wisdom, process and logic are not the factory default.
*NDAD (No Developers Allowed in Decisions)*
Methodology Developers of all kinds are strictly forbidden when it comes to decisions regarding entire projects, from back end design to deadlines, because middle and top management know exactly what they want, how it should be done, and how long it will take.
*FDD (Fear Driven Development)*
The analysis paralysis that can slow an entire project down, with developments afraid to make mistakes, break the build, or cause bugs. The source of a developer’s anxiety could be attributed to a failure in sharing information, or by implicating that team members are replaceable.
*CYAE (Cover Your Ass Engineering)*
As Scott Berkun so eloquently put it, the driving force behind most individual efforts is making sure that when the shit hits the fan, you are not to blame.2 -
Have you ever done tab (thinking that the text will indent) and enter to go to new line in Outlook and sent email by accident ? I have done couple of times now ! Not good .1
-
when a single python indent error crashes your entire web app, and the error logs don't pick up the issue -.-
-
JetBrains Fleet sucks!
It's absolutely gorgeous but it sucks, technically. I mean did nobody try to edit a YAML file with 2 spaces indent in there during development??
I wasn't even able to open a fucking project with it one time. And why in gods name does it go full macos with it's design?
Loving their IDEs, but da fuck's going on with this?14 -
When I was in school I was in a vocational school and my program was a Computer Service and Networking class and that’s what it taught it’s pretty self explanatory. BUT we also did some programming.
I was the only one interested in programming really considering everyone else loved the hardware. But when they would ask for help it was awful.
The book we used didn’t format the python properly on the page so you can’t really tell if there’s an indent if you dont know python well (they didn’t) which is okay.
But what isn’t okay is asking me for help and SENDING ME A FUCKING VIDEO OF THE COde LIKE FUCKING WHAT THE HELL MAN THAT SHIT ISNT EVEN READABLE AND YOUR HAND IS SHAKING LIKE YOURE HAVING A STROKE AT LEAST SEND ME THE CODE OR WORST CASE A PICTURE.
This happened more than once. 😤6 -
the best part of Python is that while debugging others code you don't have to beg to indent the code :32
-
My love for you I can't describe it,
so I dont't even try and hide it.
Dev. you are my one true passion
you are always there to teach me a new lesson.
Some missing semicolon;
I have searched for you soo long.
Or was it a wrong indent,
ah f**k it was the missing increment.
Thinking through endless loops
in while, for and even do form,
just that my programs do a little better perform.
You give me the possibility to express myself as who I am and who I want to be,
in so many languages, from java, JS, GO, python and even C.
You give me bugs and issues that I track,
from motivation for you I never lack.
There are projects out there, where I contribute to
oh what a beauty are you.
And now you even bring fun into my life
with devrant, I now know how to survive.
How to survive client meetings and non devs around me,
oh how much stupidity I there see.
Let's exit this small programm of mine, this so called rime,
where I an immutable statement define:
I think about you even when we are not together,
My dearest DEV I will love you forever. -
You know shit is getting real when you save and you watch your code formatted start rolling through your code like you're watching someone ... write code...
-indent here-
-pause-
-indent here-
Me: Oh man what have I done?!?!?!4 -
Me at interview ->
Imagine the frustration you may go writing code in a different platform not having your vimrc. Than imagine the suicidal thoughts you have after you finish your program and have tabs mixed with spaces and indent errors, well on top of that imagine losing all the code highlighting all the code using X to yank it and P to paste in another file
Well, i shut down the vim session and lost all the code i wrote in 2 hrs3 -
while project != Finish :
if stomach == full :
keepCoding()
else :
orderPizza()
if project == Finish
goOut()
(Fyi, can't indent here. LoL. I am glad there isn't python around to blurt errors on my face 😂)8 -
FUCK YOU PYTHON. Why you do that to me, uh?
I was using a CNN to classify hand poses and the prediction was not working at all, one class was given 100% all the time. After much investigation, I found the culprit... A FUCKING INDENT was messing my data. Normalization was inside the loop and not outside, so my pixel values were wayyyyy too small...
Also, I'm really dumb, I should have started with making sure everything was right before trying to fiddle with my architecture..
Anyway, it is working now, you can it out here if you want! https://github.com/MrEliptik/...13 -
Teach things properly, most teachers are confused and they start throwing keywords at even more confused students who then have no clue what they are doing and they then ask me to do their work for them showing me their unindented(well... kinda, they all seem to fight with the IDE, which is trying to properly indent their mess, for some reason), teachers think that Turbo Pascal is the way of life and that it is used everywhere(one teacher tried to tell me that Pascal is used in the stock market and in modern operating systems - U wot m8?! how high are you right now) and they don't teach user input sanitization and type checking, they stare at you like you are the fucking satan when you dare to use objects, collections and abstraction because they are scared to death of that stuff... and then they think 60 minutes is enough to teach HTML, CSS, JS and PHP in one go(which they even don't know properly - the teacher that made and maintains the school's website is probably stuck in 1998 judging by the design and functionality of the website and his clothes) and they then send absolutely clueless students to compete in a web design competition (and then they get angry at the judges for giving the students 0 points)6

What if those who’ve been defending the use of tabs over spaces realized they’re actually using soft tabs (spaces behind the scenes) after all? 🤔🤔🤔14

In CS class I had a only 10 lines long python script (everything else was commented out). It didn't work and I searched the bug for ca 20 minutes. I asked a class mate (who commented the other code out) if he could figure it out and he just says: "The indention of the comment is wrong". We had a discussion that it doesn't matter how to indent comments. In the end he selected all the lines, pressed tab and it just worked ?!?!6

I prefer three spaces-wide indentation in my code. This is unconventional to say the least, as many people prefer four or two spaces width.
This is why I use tabs — every developer that works in my company can do two clicks in their IDE to set the indentation they like, and I realize I must not force it my way with three spaces. Indeed, one of my colleagues prefer four spaces, and it took them less than a minute to set this up and not to worry about it ever again. To me, this sounds like a good alternative over arguing and finding a compromise that "everyone in the team are okay with".
This way, every developer who comes to my company at any time ever wouldn't have to get used to the indentation width standard that is different from what they're already comfortable with.
I want to live in the world where "convert indent" button in IDEs that replaces spaces with another spaces is dusty and abandoned. I met those who use four spaces, the most popular standard, who also thought everybody who disagrees with "The Standard" should change their ways. This makes me sad.2 -
Something with tabs vs spaces...
I forgot who won the argument tho, my colleagues don't even indent shit, lol3 -
I wonder...
Does anyone really indent with spaces by themselves? I would not if my IDE didn't do it for me.5 -
We've got two conflicting linters for ruby.
The rubocops serve the IDE and say to outdent access modifiers, giving the indented line a little yellow under-squiggle. Monkey see, monkey do, I indent it.
The company's one in the build pipeline wants to indent access modifiers and literally fails the bloody build, screaming about a rogue access modifier two spaces from where it should be.
Waste of 5 minutes.1 -
That moment when you join an organization and your job is to maintain and update their website, but their past web developers didn't indent any of their HTML and CSS code, and their class names are all very vague...2

The key to any good relationship is compromise. Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce the 2-4-tab alternating space indent style!

Did you guys know that on Android studio, if you set the keymap of completing the current statement to ' ; ', every time you hit ' ; ' after you finish your line, it will auto indent it for you.
You're welcome.5 -
To my vigilant code review overlords, yes, I appreciate the scrutiny, but must we nitpick every variable name? I've been told my camelCase is more like llamaCase.
Let's focus on real bugs, not whether my indentation is an affront to nature.
Remember, the perfect code doesn't exist – unless you're coding on a cloud XD4 -
Can we just decide that we stop using 2 spaces as indents. I really don't have a big preference with tabs versus spaces (especially with modern editors it really doesn't matter that much) but can we please for the love of God stop using 2 spaces! It's ridiculous, it's impossible to read and to understand what goes where, especially with HTML where it's important to grasp the structure of the page. Another annoying thing is when newbies use 2 spaces, since it's visually hard to make out an indent the file usually becomes completely messed up and even harder to read and work with. So can we as devs just come together and wipe 2 space indention from the face of the Earth and decide to newer use them again!7

I think someone already posted something similar but... a problem I had recently when developing a program in php was that my partner was tapping the spacebar twice in indents while I just used tab... You can imagine the result after the merge (plus no github, all by hand)... Had to review all the code top to bottom and fix the code because the teacher said that "bad indent on the code equals bad evaluation on this project, so learn how to indent!" why do people use spaces instead of tabs? is there any language that requires spaces for indents? if not, please stop!! Its painful just to watch and move across the code...6
-
In the tabs vs spaces debate I'm on the tabs side of things, but I have no problems with spaces.
But if you indent your entire code with 1 space and then indent everything else with 3,5,7... etc. I will hunt and kill you.10 -
Why the fuck why are tslint and prettier are always sucking their dicks and fuck each others asses.
Do you know this moment when you think:.... 🤔 They have millions of downloads, why do I bother formatting my code so much. Mabye all this people are smarter and saving so much time.
Then you set up eslint and prettier adjusting 10000k rules just to find eslint and prettier five minutes later in one file fucking their asses again how to indent on save😠😱7 -
Am I the only one here who knows that in Stackoverflow you have to indent your code with 4 spaces, so you tab and you get pissed ?!
I think this is the first solid argument that spaces people have on this holy war5 -
Panic mode:
When you've been writing code without checking it for some time now, hit beautify file and everything shifts by one indent1 -
My teacher wants us to use double spaces instead of using TAB and withdraws some points if we use tab for indenting. What do you guys think about that? It's C though.4

The moment when I started programming and I was told that I could use tabs to indent my code and make it readable...1

When people say they wish a language was more strict. I'm a fan of the loose lol.
Tried Python. Script failed due to indent not at right amount. Bye
C#/.NET... Typecasting out the a$$. Goodbye lol
PHP. Anything goes. Hello, this is my kind of world. Never had an issue with types but I write my code to handle values properly.
And I know people will have opposing views. However I will say that you can still achieve the strictness in PHP by putting in your own checks. Create a few custom functions to do your validations and you are good to go :)3 -
This moment when you pressed your "Auto-Indent" Hotkey and the whole software doesn't run anymore. Later you realize that it's because of your Auto-Indent and even worse - you realize you have to code on top of the spaghetti code...undefined wtf routines auto-indent paranormal paradox clean code why how could this happen to me common general help

I've gone from a "no early returns" guy to a "return as early as possible to maintain the happy path indented as much to the left as possible" guy.
Looks so much neater now. -
Behold, the code submitted by user Hecker:

When using python, almost every other linter/formatter shoves down pep8 down my throat.
I used autopep8, which has NO CONFIG FOR USING TABS. FFS. The only solution I could find is disabling indent reformatting. How is this a solution at all?
Then I found black. Black is a piece of shit. Let's move on.
Now, I use yapf+pylint. This is basically clang-fomat for python. I love it, it does exactly what I expect it to do.2 -
I think the instructions for the holy hand grenade could also apply to the amount of indentation:

Oh, look at Mr. Fancy over here with his "consistent indentation" and "readable code."
Let's just put the opening curly brace wherever we feel like it and let the next dev deal with a migraine. Brilliant!4 -
wait..... can you auto indent console logs depending on their nesting in functions?
I just realised it can be hard to read console logs because say you do
log('here 1')
callFunction()
log ('here 2')
But callFunction does a bunch of logging, then your here1 and here2 become separated !
But if you could make console log automatically add a couple spaces for every level of nesting/scoping that would be ideal .. ? 👀12 -
It's time to reconcile the religious war with a compromise: How about we use spaces for lines with indent <= 8 chars and tabs for deeper indents?
Or maybe tabs in all functions returning strings and spaces in all other functions?2 -
I'm new to Python and have been using PyCharm. I like it. I've tried just about every IDE on the market now excluding maybe a couple of the ones who don't have free versions and I always end up back to Pycharm.
I like how it's strict about formatting. My opinion it builds good habits. I watch a lot of tutorials on youtube among other things and I'm learning slowly but still I getting there.
My conclusion is that their seems to be a complete lack of consistency in the Python community regarding PEP and formatting standards. One person does it this way. Another does it that way. Makes it extremely frustrating when trying to learn because you have all these people doing things slightly different.
One guy says dont use camelCase another says yes. Granted some of these tutorial are a couple of years old and I know things change but I can't imagine it changes that much from 2 to 3 yeah but when you can't even be consistent with your spacing of your print functions or comments it's like nails on a chalkboard.
And thats just the beginning. I'm a tabs guy some are spaces. That's a whole other rant or whatever. Hardly the point really. Lots of different inconsistencies but I'm running out of characters.
Maybe im just not finding good videos. They all act like they know what they are doing and to an extent I suppose they do.
It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out their like they do ready to be scrutinized so you have to at least have a clue of what your doing. Some of these people have 10s of thousands of subs and I find myself picking apart every little thing they are doing and find many times they are teaching wrong standards. At least that's how I see it from the little experience I have now.
I'm just beyond frustrated and would appreciate any advice that a person wants to give. Keep in my I'm new and may just be misguided so try not to be to harsh if I've drawn an incorrect conclusion.13 -
The only thing cooler than magic numbers are magic no-go numbers.
Or does anyone have a reason for considering 2 or 4 spaces indent but not 3?3 -
Recently saw that Visual Studio 2022 preview build, I guess 4 is here, so any idea if this one is more stable? Like I had the 3rd preview build and sh!t was the worst. Felt like riding a bullock cart. Even the indent guides vanished outta nowhere. So guys?1

I tried for a long time to use emacs, but didn't manage to come through with it
Now I'm fiddling with vim, and it's actually quite nice ! Anyone have some plugins to recommend ?
Already have ruby, lightline, indent guide -
How do you tell someone their code sucks?? Like why dont you indent?? What's wrong with using useful class names? At least chuck a comment in there...

I tried to figure out the key stroke combination for Auto indent in WebStorm (on a Mac).
Result: The key stroke for selecting all (CMD + A) stopped working.
