It saved me from suicide.
You have to understand first that things in India work differently. Academics are not personal, but a social business. Academic competition in India is very high and not in a good way, or for the good reasons.
As a teenager was sent off from my home to the other side of the country. I didn't like it. My studies suffered, and I failed my exams. Came back home and faced months of emotional abuse (guilt trips, scornful comments, plain insults) from my parents, neighbours and relatives. Indian society is just built that way. They didn't know they were damaging my psyche, or they were too angry to care. Lots of other shit (lost friends, lost love) happened at roughly the same time period and everything started to fall like dominos.
I fell into severe depression. Lost appetite, lost sleep. Nothing mattered anymore. There were mornings when I would wake up and not get up from my bed for hours, and not even move a finger. Self-hate became the motto of the day. I became violent and anti-social. I would either be angry or trying not to break down and give up all the time. Many a night, I considered suicide. I would end up googling for easy ways out to take.
But what gave me a way out of the pains of my reality was programming. It helped my keep my head, figuratively and literally. It kept my mind distracted and gave me a sense of purpose. I would shut myself in, plug in my headphones, shut the world out and just experiment.
I am not saying that I am the best at what I do, but those sleepless and troubled nights, and many other similar nights over the years have given me a definite edge over my colleagues.
Even today, when everything is falling to pieces, I know I have something to fall back on. I still get episodes of depression every now and then, but I know I can always pick up a new project and distract myself. It probably isn't healthy, but eh...
I am alive. I code. I kick ass. My colleagues respect and value my opinion. I love my job.
Computer does what I tell it to do (mostly :p) and I feel good. Because for that small moment, I am in control of everything. For that infinitesimally small moment of my average, boring, and somewhat painful life, I am God.50 -
What. The. Fuck. Did. Just. Happen.
A random girl followed me on social media. She looked nice and intelligent so I followed her back.
Started to chat about some random stuff. She told me she works at the HR department of an international company and asked me what's my job. Told her I'm a software developer.
Right after that she sent me a selfie. Obviously I said she looks nice, she thanked it and asked some more about my job. After a short discussion I received another selfie but somewhere in between she lost the outer layer of her clothing.
She still looks nice but now I'm sitting here utterly confused and cant tell whether it was my sarcastic humour and moderately handsome facial features which charmed her or she just needs to recruit someone for a new project and willing to do everything to reach the quota.67 -
Watching normal people use a computer is incredibly painful.
* slow typing
* slow mouse movements
* mouse is used for everything
* instead of hitting the back button, they'll load up a website and go through 6 pages again.
* no shortcuts!
Someone lost their tabs today (Windows crashed), so I said "press ctrl + shift + T". They were so amazed that keys could do something so advanced.
Dhcosncowhtoehwurt hrnxkxxhry he.
Honestly, if people learned how to use keyboards to their full potential, they could shave off 1-2 hours of their normal work PER DAY!22 -

A man flying in a hot air balloon suddenly realizes he’s lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts to get directions, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"
The man below says: "Yes. You're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field."
"You must work in Information Technology," says the balloonist.
"I do" replies the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but It's of no use to anyone."
The man below replies, "You must work in management."
"I do," replies the balloonist, *"But how'd you know?"**
"Well", says the man, "you don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault."6 -

6 months ago I sold everything, quit my job, gave up my apartment and left the country with my 11kg backpack. I booked a one way ticket to South America. I wanted to travel, get lost but also finish up some personal projects and do a little tech books challenge I came up with. I learnt so much over the past half a year, it's crazy.
Not looking back. Projects paid off and it turns out that my dream company actually found me themselves without me even applying... and so still from South America I'm in final rounds of the interview! 🤗
All my worries about a gap in CV, no employment along with other problems I thought I was gonna have... It's all BS. So if anyone here is waiting for a sign. Well, this is it now. Go!22 -
Any devs here that Code in C/C++...?
Or am I lost in "webRant".
I am worried about the future " code everything in javascript " generation :)
Make pointers great again!75 -
Had an external hdd for backing up family photos etc. (back when I just discovered Linux and still used windows as well)
Connected it to my windows system and it said that the thing was corrupt and i had to format it.
Well fuck, a few hundred gb's of pictures, memories, backups etc etc probably lost. (keep in mind I didn't know that much about computers at that point)
Was about to format that thing with literally tears in my eyes when I thought I'd, because why the fuck not since I was out of options anyways, try it as well on my Ubuntu installation.
EVERYTHING WAS STILL ON THERE AND PERFECTLY ACCESSIBLE.
After a very much rage attack on windows I formatted the windows partition and used that as a backup space as well :).27 -
Somehow I feel like I personally owe Linus for git.
17:50 Colleague whispers "fuck" and the entire project we've worked on for the last half year responds with 404.
17:55 A quick diagnosis shows that she wrote "rm - rf ../" instead of "./" when she threw out her staging dir an thereby deleted everything.
17:58 git pull, everything is back.
18:15 everything is configured and we're up and running again.
**Alternative Timeline without Version control **
17:58 We start looking through Backup folders
18:20 We're fairly confident to have found the most up to date Backup in /var/backup/newback/v2/june/new/released/ and start copying back into the project directory.
19:30 Some files are missing we start patching shit up.
19:40 I realize how much work went down the drain and start strangling my colleague. The Api seems to do the most important things again.
20:00 My colleagues dead body is hidden and I'm 80% confident that the tasks depending on us should run.
Next day: They didn't run. Every nightly build failed, nobody can do anything useful.
A week later : Shits starting to work again, all lost files are replaced. Replacement for dead colleague still missing though.
It's moments like this that make you really appreciate the luxurys we have nowadays...5 -
Fixing family / friends technical problems, episode 2.
Problem: "I lost my iPhone, I know there's a thing that lets you find it. Can you help?"
Debugging:
Me: sure, it's called "find my iPhone"
Friend: ah yes that's it. How do I use it?
Me: I'll show you, just login here and ... oh you didn't set it up?
Friend: Probably not, I don't know much about this computer stuff.
Me: ... when you setup your phone for the first time, it's a full screen thing that says "do you want us to locate your phone if it's lost. Yes / No". It's hardly writing an encryption algorithm now is it?
Friend: no it's not, but still I just didn't know. I probably clicked no for everything.
Me: ... says here you clicked yes for iCould ... and yes for photo sync ... so you read the one about your pictures but not about lost or stolen property ... nice.
Friend: ... so you can't find it then.
Me: No, natural selection took it away from you.
Friend: oh **** off.6 -

If you’re:
- Always tired
- Feeling lost
- Constantly bored
- Indifferent toward the future
Then it’s time to realize you’re going through life on autopilot without any passion.
Find what you’re passions are and pursue them with everything you have. Stop wasting yourself.13 -

Me: Are you signed into your google drive, and within the folder?
Client: No, how do i do that again? I obviously cant be bothered reading your well formated and instructional guide and would rather contact you at 6pm on a saturday night8 -

Never in my life I was scared as today.
I recently left a big company to work for a small one as the first internal developer.
Had a small issue in the production server. The fix was easy, just remove a single table entry. And... *drum roll*... I forgot to add a where clause. All orders were lost.
No idea if we had backups or anything, I quickly called the one other IT dude in the company.
He had no clue where are the backups and how to find them.
Having some experience with Nmap, I quickly scanned our network and found a Nas device.
There was a backup, whole VHD backup. 300GB of it, the download speed is around 512kb/s. No way I can fix it before management finds out, but then an idea came to mind. Old glorious 7zip. Managed to extract only the database files, sent them to the server and quickly swapped them. Everything was fine... The manager connected 5 minutes later. Scariest 45 minutes of my life...20 -
Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who is the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest with God as the judge. They set themselves before their computers and begin. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight.
Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightning strikes, taking out the electricity. Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over. He asks Satan to show his work. Visibly upset, Satan cries and says, “I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out.”
“Very well,” says God, “let us see if Jesus has fared any better.”
Jesus presses a key, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers.
Satan is astonished. He stutters, “B-b-but how?! I lost everything, yet Jesus’ program is intact! How did he do it?”
God chuckles, “Everybody knows… Jesus saves.”4 -

Last week I almost lost my belief in everything..
A friend of minde, he's currently learning programming (Delphi 😂) in some kind of university, just told me:
"Hey, why do you spend so much time caring about error handling? I just surround all my programs with one try catch block and I never have to think about errors!"
Ehm. No statement needed, right?2 -
My 1.5 year old 1tb SSD just died unexpectedly. (Samsung EVO 850). It might be under warranty yet.
Fortunately the only data I lost was my debian install, some steam games, bookmarks, and a few unfinshed projects.
I kept everything important on a backup spinning drive -- which is also dying. Joy. But I might be able to save its data.28 -

The most unrealistic deadline? Okay, here it goes. For context, this is one of my earliest jobs, and I’m actively using React.
— Kiki, I have a stunning idea! Let’s build a Figma clone!
— Okaaaay, 🧐
— You have two days.
— A what?
— I’ve just stumbled upon an amazing new technology. You maybe don’t know it yet. It’s called React.js, and you totally can build a full Figma clone in two days using it!
— …
— It’s a revolution, and you’re so ignorant for not following it. Are you even a real engineer?
— …
Two days later:
— Forget about Figma! Let’s build an online DAW for musicians!
That guy was nuts. I left when we had an executive meeting, I was explaining tech things, and he suddenly popped out a fucking tambourine and started striking it. One year later, he lost everything and went to get a junior C++ position at an outsourcing company.8 -
The following just happened in the bus:
A woman took a beautiful Enpora flip phone from 2008 out of her pocket. While she did that a small yellow paper fell on the ground. My eyes pointed at the paper and I saw multiple usernames, passwords and codes on it.
I didn't even hesitate and tapped on her shoulder and gave it back.
She was frightened! Couldn't thank me enough and told me how important it was to have that with her. She said she couldn't remember all her passwords and that if she would've lost it, she didn't know how to log in and unlock her phone anymore.
I gladly told her that it wasn't very safe but ofcourse I understoot that it can be hard to remember everything.
Also I almost told her that she could start using a password manager but with a flipphone you can't use that of course ;)5 -

Fuck yes for data hoarding! Wanted to start on a project again but thought I lost everything.
Code is sill in git, (took me a while to find but whatever) database is still on my own laptop (due to ex/importing my entire local host as for databases every time I do a new installation).
Let’s get this fucker going again 😎3 -

A woman in hot air balloon realized she is lost...
*She reduced altitude & shouted to a man below :-*
_"Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend to meet him an hour ago but I don't know where I am."_
*Man below replied :-*
_"You are in hot air balloon 30 feet above the ground. You are at 41 degree North latitude & 59 degree West longitude."_
*Lady :-* _"You must be an engineer."_
*Man :-* _"How do you know?"_
*Lady :-* _"Everything you told me is technically correct but useless & the fact is I'm still lost."_
*Engineer :-* _"You must be in Top Management."_
*Lady :-* _"Ya. How do you know?"_
*Engineer :-* _"You don't know where you are or where you're going, you have no technical knowledge._
_You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep & you expect people beneath you to solve your problems..! -
I studied ancient languages, because of corruption in my home country, I couldn't find any place in academy although my scores were above 90%. Moved to another country and taught myself web development. Naturally in time I lost almost all my knowledge of Latin, Ancient Greek, the whole ancient literature, history, philosophy and culture (everything from historical evolution of tremmas in letter i in ancient Greek to honey fish recipe in ancient Rome cousine). I'm super happy with Webdev tho but I think that also counts as data loss.11

AAAAAARRRRGGHHHH FUUUCKKER!!!
The new MacBook Pro with touchbar is ABSOLUTELY SHITE.
I can't tell you how many times I have accidentally touched the escape key with my pinky while typing. Also accidentally touched "send" while in apple Mail halfway through writing something.
Apple clearly did no user testing with this as I have googled around and many folk are having the same frustrations.
I've just typed a massive note into jira and towards the end my pinky hit the escape key and I lost everything!!
FUCK CUNT BASTARD WANK!!!12 -
Yesterday I was cleaning my computer and accidentally wiped out all my dev folder (I got confused with another folder named "dev" that I had just downloaded) and I lost all my work.
Fortunately, most of everything (or the most important at least) was on GIT. I only lost my yesterday's work which was not pushed (only locally committed).
Kids, remember pushing before leaving the building11 -
"Did you not see (x important announcement) guys?! It was posted very clearly in the group teams channel and everyone was tagged!"
"No, we turned off notifications for that teams channel so didn't see it."
"What?! Why on earth would you turn notifications off, everything posted there is incredibly important! You must turn them back on now!"
Channel history:
- @everyone "HEY GUYS IT'S FRIDAY! Let's celebrate by everyone posting their favourite gif! Go go go!"
- @everyone "Choo choo guys it's the training train! How about we all share our best training experience for a bit of positivity?"

South Africa Electricity:
This is after I lost my 7th 3000VA online UPS...
In South Africa we have 240V power most of the time which is great, but then there is scheduled power outages (because our electricity companies cannot "handle the load").
When we have a power outage we have automatic generators which brings everything back up although there is still the 1 minute drop which has weird spikes and odd voltages before switching to the generator (as the generators wait until they are stable)
This has being destroying our equipment, we had a $2000 repair bill 3 TIMES for 3 SEPERATE Xerox Machines that have surge protectors although their circuit board somehow fried.
We have lost 7 3000VA UPSes (3 different brands) and 5 voltage regulators we put to protect the UPSes.
The one UPS that fried just had 2 dead fuses, I decided to replace them (unplugged the batteries to avoid 240V) and when plugging the batteries back in there was a huge spark and flame and the metal and plastic melted onto the board and turned black (the metal pins to connect the battery are non existant now)
I am done with electricity...
P.S. 2 of our generators also got hit by lightning as we are high on a hill and ALL the plastic cable coverings inside the generator were melted14 -
I've been locked in a room with another dev for 2 days working like insane to remake a outdated crm system. Had to inform the department lead that the deadline isn't possible and we need another week. Got questioned about what we had been doing the past days, redesigned the database, migrated data, frontend etc. Boss goes "that's all you manager in 2 days?" We went in with 2 slides and had to design and plan everything from scratch.
I lost count of how many rounds and added complexity happened in 2 days when Customer came by. Now there is going to be a board meeting with PM as he complains that the project is taking too many resources and should be killed. I invited myself to that meeting to defend the work done. Hold my laptop and watch this.7 -

That rejuvenating feeling when you've been trying to get a piece of code working for days, google hasn't helped, and you're just about to call it another lost day, when a random "what happens if I do this" solves everything.
I'm going to dream about puppies, prancing through a meadow, and rootbeer floats tonight!2 -

Great ... after management got our system destroyed by some external idiots, pledged to never do this again, they now hired externals again to do a whole project by themselves.
Last time we lost all but one senior dev (that would be me) ... this time they'll lose the last one as well. Don't care of this whole department goes tits up anymore, I'm out. If everything goes well, I'm signing a new contract in a few days, making me free in 3-4 months (yes, German labour laws have long periods when you quit ;) ).
Dear management, have fun managing a bunch of rookies with no contacts in the company.1 -
A few years ago I was browsing Bash.org, and a user posted that he'd physically lost a machine.
A few weeks ago, I'd switched my router out for OPNSense. I figured it was time to start cleaning up my network.
Over the course of tracking down IP addresses and assigning statics to mac addresses, I spotted an IP I didn't recognize.
Being a home network, I'm pretty familiar with everything on the network by IP, so was a little taken aback.
I did some testing, found out that it was a Linux box. Cool.
I can SSH into it. Ok.
Logs show that it's running fine, no CPU/Memory/Harddrive issues. Nice.
So where is it?
Traceroute shows its connected directly to the router... Maybe over an unmanaged switch...
Hostname is "localhost"... That's no help.
I've walked the network 4 times now, and God knows where it is.
I think maybe I'll just leave it alone. If it ain't broke...9 -
Installing arch,
everything works perfectly,
installing grub,
won't install to partition,
use force option,
grub installs,
grub boots,
select arch,
failure...
Looking through the config file I discover a uuid I don't recognise, oh,
that's because literally no device or partition marches this uuid that appeared from the damn ether.
After changing it to point to an existent partition it works...
But seriously grub, why does your setup script just pull addresses out of it's ass? I lost 10 minutes because I thought you were trustworthy...5 -

I've just lost my grandfather last Friday from liver and gallbladder failure. Him being a composer and a musician impacted me a lot as a pianist try-hard. I regret I prioritized my studying for college over him and only visited him twice. But he saw my performance from my parents (they recorded it) and he complimented it, so it's more than enough for me. Rest in peace gramp, and thank you.5 -

At first I really was gonna keep quiet about the whole Linus topic. But then I just saw Mark wrote this article 4 days ago.
Why Being an Asshole Can Be a Valuable Life Skill https://markmanson.net/being-an-ass...
Nobody can be fucking perfect. Nobody can be fucking everything. Through our lives from the first cry to last breath, we lost certain shits while gaining some shits. I'm not talking about materials and tangible things here. I mean losing shits like ability to understand emotions or loving or being empathetic and etc. But in return for those lost, you may have a superb understanding on different topics and ability of amazing concentration and freedom.
So I'm not saying that you have to be a nasty jerk to be successful. I'm saying you might be a nasty jerk since you are successful. And if you seriously think you need to improve yourself and do something about it, ok good for the rest of people around you.
Will the outcome be good for you? I'm not sure. I doubt it. The older we grow, the higher we reach, the stronger bond to our identify is made. Looking ownself as a total jerk and trying to improve it is probably the hardest task a guy can get in my opinion.23 -
Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who is the better programmer.
Visibly upset, Satan cries and says, "I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out."
"Very well," says God, "let us see if Jesus has fared any better."
Jesus presses a key, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers.
Satan is astonished. He stutters, "B-b-but how?! I lost everything, yet Jesus' program is intact! How did he do it?"
God chuckles, "Everybody knows... Jesus saves."2 -
I was working on a site just moments ago and everything was fine. Then I move my laptop from my living room to my bedroom and on refreshing the page everything seems broken! Disorganized cards, and everything looks 10x bigger. I panic because I was supposed to deploy it on Thursday and I was just doing some final touches and angular has given me one hell of a time. I fucking rolled back all my commits to yesterday and cleared chromes chrome's cache....still nothing works. Then I realized there's a new button on my address tab and on clicking it is showed I had (accidentally) zoomed in by a fucking 175% when moving the laptop *facepalm*. On resetting it everything was ok. Now I have lost all of today's commits and my chrome cache. One box of tic-tacs down and I still can't overcome my rage... So I wrote this rant 😠😩😩
I need a stress ball😩😩7 -
After spending around 8+ hours on an Adobe After Effects project (which I obviously didn't save), at around 12 at night, it crashed.
I lost everything. Was heartbroken. Died inside. Nearly cried. Then I restarted the app and started from scratch.
The weird thing is I recreated the entire thing in around 1.5 hours. Not sure if I'm happy or sad with myself.4 -
This is something I'll never forget.
I'm a senior UI engineer. I was working at a digital agency at the time and got tasked with refactoring and improving an existing interface from a well known delivery company.
I open the code and what do I find? Indentation. But not in the normal sense. The indentation only went forward, randomly returning a bunch of tabs back in the middle of the file a few times, but never returning to its initial level after closing a tag or function, both on HTML and JS.
Let that sink in for a minute and try to imagine what it does to your editor with word wrapping (1 letter columns), and without (absurd horizontal scrolling).
Using Sublime at the time, ctrl+shift+P, reindent. Everything magically falls beautifully into place. Refactor the application, clean up the code, document it, package it and send it back (zip files as they didn't want to provide version control access, yay).
The next day, we get a very angry call from the client saying that their team is completely lost. I prove to the project manager that my code is up to scratch, running fine, no errors, tested, good performance. He returns to the client and proves that it's all correct (good PM with decent tech knowledge).
The client responds with "Yeah, the code is running, but our team uses tabs for version control and now we lost all versioning!".
Bear in mind this was in 2012, git was around for 7 years then, and SVN and Mercury much longer.
I then finally understood the randomness of the tabs. The code would go a bunch of tabs back when it went back to a previous version, everything above were additions or modifications that joined seamlessly with the previous version before, with no way to know when and so on.
I immediately told the PM that was absurd, he agreed, and told the client we wouldn't be reindenting everything back for them according to the original file.
All in all, it wasn't a bad experience due to a competent PM, but it left a bad taste in my mouth to know companies have teams that are that incompetent, and that no one thought to stop and say "hey, this may cause issues down the line".4 -
A woman in hot air balloon realized she is lost...
She reduced altitude & shouted to a man below: Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend to meet him an hour ago but I don't know where I am.
Man below replied: You are in hot air balloon 30 feet above the ground. You are at 41 degree North latitude & 59 degree West longitude.
Lady: You must be an engineer.
Man: How do you know?
Lady: Everything you told me is technically correct but useless & the fact is I'm still lost.
Engineer: You must be in Top Management.
Lady: Ya. How do you know?
Engineer: You don't know where you are or where you're going, you have no technical knowledge.
You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep & you expect people beneath you to solve your problems..!!

I think that's the thread dump of my brain currently.
Anyone knows what date and time we have?
I'm so lost right now.
17 projects atm thanks to e.g. Microsofts Exchange Hell.
I. Hate. Everything.
Go spread your butt cheeks so I can give you two fists of love before you write a damn ticket regarding yet another (security-) problem in infrastructure.10 -
That time you think you found your dream dev job...
But they really just needed a content entry person so the other dev could add 'senior' to his title and work on all the new fun projects, while you're stuck fixing IE7 bugs in his code from 3 years ago.
He used prototype instead of jQuery.
You try to tell them about responsive design, but they think everything needs a separate mobile version.
You spend half the day learning his custom functions to a cms he built 2 years ago, and he's in the process of rebuilding a new cms from the ground up, so you have to learn the new version too.
Was fired 3 days before my birthday, and didn't get my company gift, even though I contributed to every one else's gifts.
Fired 2 months before birth of my child so lost my insurance.
After my time there... They now build responsive, they now use jQuery for everything. I also showed them how to do IE testing with virtual box, instead of them using the secretary's computer.7 -
A tech trend I'm excited about ?
Fuck these days everyone is so excited about everything. One can't decide what to pursue. I end up reading and trying bits of many things without being useful at anything.
I can't imagine how lost newbies might be these days lol
For now I just decided to be better at what I do. We'll see if I can hold my horses 🙄4 -
How can some developers send emails like "I did <x> and <y> right, but I still have an error!" with NO copy/paste of the error? Come on, you hate user emails that just say "Your site doesn't work." You should know better.
I'm going to just start answering with "Wow, that sucks, and you did everything right, huh? It must just hate you." I shouldn't have to go force you to tell me what the problem actually is at that basic level.
I used to think this was a user thing. We wouldn't do that... hah, lost user, oh well, that's why we're helping them. Apparently it's not.6 -
Sweet baby Jesus the stories are true. I thought this day would never come but yesterday I found a website in production straight out of a horror story.
Inline script tags that contained spaghetti code and static content. And to top it off inline style with position absolute for everything 😰😰
Also worth mentioning a couple of broken pages(404) and a beatufill repeat-y image for the background😳
I lost all hope😂16 -
I lost all my data from a terrible accident. By using recovery software over the course of a week (because the computer I had to use to recover it was less than adequate), I managed to recover most data. Upon restoring the data to the SSD, there was numerous corruption issues, strange glitches, etc. I tried running many system recovery tools, repairing the registry, disk check, everything. Today, I could not install Visual Studio Community updates because... it couldn't. It just popped up a blank window and that's it. I tried everything. Eventually, that combined with every other issue I've had, apps not working because of corrupt files and having to reinstall basically everything I've tried to use anyway, I decided to do a clean install.
So I'm waiting for many many many installers, right now. Nanite was only the tip of the ice berg. I guess what I'm trying to say is...
How's everyone doing? :)2 -
Okay. For fuck sakes, writing complex code that's meant to handle "everything" and is "super generic" can be a fuck up. Like just keep shit simple. THAT is the show of great and impressive work. Over engineering is not it. Yes your shit works and yes your shit is fancy but was it needed? How long did it even take you for this over kill? How long will it take the next person to understand or not.
Someone now has to sit and run through your shit to get what you were doing. Instead of just being able to look and once and have it all figured out.
Keep things simple.
Lost 2 hours on bullshit 🤬4 -
Just lost my shit with a colleague which went for the Nth time "Oh MaN tHiS sCrIpT sUcKs So BaD".
Dude, I wrote the thing in 5 days, and back when I did I had no experience whatsoever with JS -or with programming at all, for that matter. It was pretty much my first project and I was as green as it can possibly get.
And yet, that script served us well for well over a year and a half without being touched once. It always worked for everything you could possibly want. Shut your mouth or do it yourself, buddy.3 -
Ok, so I basically spent my weekend trying to work out why the fuck my python docker container would not connect to my mariadb docker container. Tried fucking everything, bridged network, host network, links (even though theyre deprecated), you name it. It would NOT WORK!
In my despair I finally turned to StackOverflow. There I was told 5min after posting the question that the reason was probably that mysql is a quite heavy service, which takes a bit to start up.
I thought to myself "Oh, get the fuck outta here, that can't be it, shit's way too easy to work!"
I tried it nevertheless by adding a 10sec delay before querying the database AND THE MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT ACTUALLY WORKS!! So, I essentially just lost a weekend because I was too impatient... I think I'm gonna punch some trees now.4 -
my brain buzzes more than ever, i can't get my sleep schedule under control, i can't find the motivation to do literally anything unless someone pretty much forces me to do it, i can barely focus on anything, my hands constantly refuse to work properly...
why? why must i be like this? sure, i've gotta do this and that and the other, but none of it ends up getting done because i'm too busy staring at a fucking wall, lost in my own head, and everything gets fucked up.
i can't even be fucked to go for walks or anything because i don't know the neighborhood and there's such a high crime rate here, nothing i'm not used to but still...7 -
HOW TO FIND A LEGITIMATE CRYPTO RECOVERY EXPERT; HIRE iFORCE HACKER RECOVERY
iForce Hacker Recovery saved me from cryptocurrency scammers
I was scammed by a Stock investment after I talked and was convinced by this Russian guy that I sent him money via the website. I almost lost everything. But for the timely intervention of this iForce Hacker Recovery Team who just kick-off on time got back my $474,000 worth of stock investments. I have made a lot of friends due to code. I also made exactly one enemy.
A guy who had to turn everything into a contest to stroke his ego. He lost every time though. But he took every chance he could to shit on my code, despite demonstrating he didn’t know what he was doing.1 -
Have you ever lost all the motivation for anything in life. Yes that's me right now. Can't even be bothered to right this post properly. Fuck everything and everyone.8

I've lost all my fucks, I gave them all away!
I'm so over everything today! I have an interview on Monday and I'm always super anxious not matter what it is. I hate caring so much about crap nobody gives any actual fucks about!
I'm tired of caring about crap, being a single parent looking for a job for so long now and dealing with all my responsibilities is BS
I'm sick and tired of everything today!!!!!!!!!!!!6 -
Student here.
For those who got a degree in CS or similar, what is some advice you can offer to a sophomore in school?
The education I have gotten so far for a Software Engineering degree seems like it isn't enough. So far, I only know C++ and front end web development. Besides the little tiny projects they give us, they do not teach us how the field works.
One of my most lingering questions of all is.. what technologies should I know before interning and/or job hunting?!?! There are dozens of languages for everything; I'm lost. I feel the pain for developers in the future who have to catch up on technologies.
I have heard that learning C++ will make it easier to learn other languages. I won't know until I start another language (too busy working in the summers).
What regrets do you have? What do you wish you could've known while studying as a student or self-teaching yourself?8 -
Hello winter depression. I showed up at work at 3pm. I should write a concept for restructuring our IT department. But I'm surrounded by people who have the misconception that design is just making things pretty. And they laugh at the idea to conduct user interviews to improve the situation. It's expected that I finish this until two weeks. Because thats when my contract ends. Job hunt starts again. I lost my motivation for everything. Let me be 😕4

How's the week so far you ask?
> I got dumped with unacceptable reason, I cannot swallow that reason
> My boss says I haven't been doing good work (I'm fresh off the boat)
> I've been working alone for 3 hours extra, because my team members are on CL (again fresh off the boat)
> I've been stuck on an issue which is already live since a week, because according to seniors I have to do it.
Personally, I've lost interest in everything and I and being nihilist.11 -

I've always been kinda lazy about backups and such, thinking it wouldn't be so bad, and "I have my most important stuff on Dropbox".
Just now, for some reason one of my hard drives just stopped for a bit, and I couldn't do anything with it anymore. Luckily it went away after restarting my pc, but it scared the shit out of me, as I almost lost 500 gigs worth of music, films, documents, etc...
This made me really think about the whole backup thing, and I'm creating a disk image as I type this. The time that I spend on that will be much less then the time it'll cost to recover everything. Lesson learned ^^'3 -
Fuck me.
I just finished a 5 kyu quiz on codewars, grabbed my mouse to click the "submit final" button and accidentaly hit the button on the side which jumps to the previous page. I lost everything and have to rewrite it now.
Welcome back, ctrl+a ctrl+c obsession, old friend.2 -
I kept piling on hard drives at home and you know... One day I'll setup some redundancy.
Then a 5 months old full 4TB drive gave up and I lost that data.
After that I've upgraded to having a ceph cluster storing everything.
At the beginning of this year one hard drive in the cluster gave up. I didn't notice until I wondered why available storage was low. Cluster had already rebalance itself and were running flawless.2 -
That moment when you think to use fopen instead of open, and everything comes together magically. Only lost half a day debugging this too!1

I haven't been productive since the bs. (Refer to previous rant) And one deadline is approaching very fast.
My Christmas was ruined because I was anxious/annoyed/everything negative about the bs as well as being alone and stuck in a village. My new year has always been crap but this year it was extra crap.
Overall, I'm having none of the fun. My life is starting to feel like a deadend. I feel like I have to give up on my dreams to survive. And that no one is really on my side, despite whatever they say.
The ADHD rejection sensitivity is also heavily activated. Like I know that realistically I can fix this, but at this point I just want to break everything and let the ship sink.
I have lost time that I could be productive to this bs. And I wish nothing but misery for all those responsible for putting me in this situation. (I take responsibility for my mistakes, but not for how others behaved towards me)6 -

After 1 year of working as android dev and coding in java, finally switched to another startup where everything is in Kotlin where I will be the only one maintaining that project.
Me: This code has almost no comments
Senior dev: Code is pretty self explanatory

At least she spent 4 days with me and walked me through the code, so I'm not totally lost which is great!2 -
I thought I just lost everything on my computer because somehow automatic update from win made my ram run at 1300mhz instead of 1600mhz and it assumed there was a hardware problem and completely froze up every time it started. Luckily I decided to comb through bios first and Bam! Ram at wrong speed! I changed the setting and windows booted happily. Piece of shit update system. 😑5

About today when I was trying to migration 2 million+ records simultaneously!
Ran two migration @ once and this happened!
PS: On restart everything is back to normal but lost 2 tables data which needs remigration!3 -
So I did a clean Windows 10 restore recently on my laptop from Insider program to just Anniversary Update . Went away from my computer for a day or so by the time I got updates completed and Visual Studio up and running. So earlier today I went to start back up development on a project of mine to come across the emulators not working. The thing is that I lost 6 hrs of production to figure this out. I tried everything possible so I gave up and reinstalled VS to just remember I forgot to turn on my Hyper-V in BIOS setting. So I'm half way in VS reinstalling and I can't do anything about it. GOD FUCKEN DAMMIT W10!8

Can you make me just a simple site? Only a few pages..... It won't take you long, we're family too so how about I pay 10% of the real cost??
Weeks of personal free time lost, and a fully fledged eCommerce site 28 pages deep with CMS controlled everything later....5 -
I finally finished my Bachelors Degree that I was studying for while working 40-60h a week with 2 children.
During this whole time (3.5 years) I was totally into learning everything. Not just for my studies but I read many books about programming and architecture read thousands of blog posts and loved it to be a software developer.
And now suddenly I lost every interest in reading even one tiny post.
Software Development got boring and I just don't care about it anymore.
Probably just a down period, but who knows.
At least I finally can build my unfinished guitars that had to wait for so long. working on them makes me really feel happy 😊5 -
Sat at my desk this morning, computer incredibly slow, lots of error windows saying files could not be found.
I decide to reboot. Post is slow. And that's a HDD failure. I lost half of my storage. Luckily, almost everything is for projects so it's all in the git repo.1 -
A client's site got malware infected, so we decided to remove everything and replace the site with a fresh WordPress installation (very basic site with 4 pages of content).
Contacted iPage live support asking them to check and unsuspend the account (with no files on it), but they kept on insisting that I buy their "firewall" and "SiteLock" services, with zero reply related to suspension. I've had live chat with many other hosting companies, never had such a lousy fucked up conversation. Without providing technical support, they keep marketing their useless expensive services. Fuck you iPage, you just lost a customer.2 -
Normally I don't give a shit when I lost a job opportunity.
But dude, this year everything is bad as fuck. I moved out (yet again) to marry and start a new life.
And as I said a previous Rants, I got a client that just made me lost another client when they started to get shady. For almost a god dam month now, I can't find even a crappy job.
This never happened. I got more than 10 opportunities. A handful of interviews, a few tests and none of them gave me a job.
Now I have one week to get married.
The money I saved whent to all expenses. And now my anxiety is kicking in like it never did in years.
I really don't know what to do and I
can't fucking sleep.10 -
TLDR: There's some days where the Gods of IT are not with you. Just lost a whole day of work.
So this morning, we (me and my team) big performance issues with our web app. Lot's of requests time out, big latency, etc
Try to ssh to VPS, latency of 10 seconds between user input and output.
Usual checks: RAM ok, Proc ok, hard drive ok, reboot server (20 minutes), update/upgrade
We decide to call OVH. After 15 minutes call, we try to reboot in rescue mode. Reboot fails at 60% + everything freezes.
After an hour, OVH opens an incident ticket on +200 vps instances (including mine) everything is down during +1h
Finally everything is okay ! Even had time to migrate my new database schema.
Still, quick heavy on the mind but feels good to go home with everything working out correctly -
whole fucking day of coding.
git server down for maintenance so compresses folders / send. lost everything. if i meet a microsoft employee today there will be blood and piss. DIE U FUCKING FUCKS!!€ -
Worst mistake ever :
Didn't care for changing environment while pip or apt, always did sudo for no reason.
One day installed Conda and unity. Didn't realise it changed everything to python3-gi. Everything fucked up.
Tried to fix by started removing Conda removed gnome*, lost GUI.
For first time worked on tty, after a 6 hour redbull session. Got back the system working.
First thing then done is learn to install in virtual and local environments.1 -
So I actually got an update for my PC at work, proposing me to postpone it or to do it later. I postpone it to one hour later, since I'll be buying food for lunch, it can update and reboot.
When I came back from lunch, laptop is asking me to postpone or do the update right now. So I sigh because the laptop just stayed locked without doing anything, and ask it to do the update in 4 hours, when I'll be leaving.
2 minutes later, it forces me to update with the "30 min left before rebooting", so I sigh again, closes everything and reboot.
Since it's a Windows, it's slow on booting by definition. Plus launching Slack, Eclipse, Firefox, VLC. Takes time. Plus launching the server. +1000 files to compile then deploying.
I lost 20 minutes because of that edgy bitch called "update".3 -
GODDAMN I HATE WIX!
I feel angry. I feel like smashing the developer's face who programmed this piece of shit editor. Everything I touch there just breaks and moves on its own. I fix the header, save, come back the next day and everything is shifted 5 pixels. WTF!?!
Plugins that they developed in-house aren't even compatible with their own systems. Custom code disappears suddenly. Editor doesn't allow two people to edit at the same time, resulting in lost work.
Seriously FUCK WIX.
Don't ever even consider touching this nightmare of an editor.
I could literally have hard-coded the entire site in React or Vue faster than building it in this editor, but my client wants the ability to edit things on their own later.
WIX: Not even once.4 -
!rant, throw everything away
When you spend 9 hour at work, 2 hours in that fucking exploded bus, tries to spend time with friends and family, spend enough time with that one special person, try to sleep descently and manage to work on your personal projects during that two hours in the bus, and that each day, each week, the whole year.
You need a lot of motivation!
But when today I loose two months of work because of a hardware problem and that (because I don't have internet in the bus) I didn't backup on GitHub , I just have lost all motivation and will!
I just can't anymore!
FML5 -
THANK GOD FOR GIT!
Was trying around new features in new version of a build tool. Tried setting output dir to parent folder (..). Turns out the tool first cleans everything in the output dir, lost all projects...4 -
I met my crush last day, she is a junior from the same college, everything was fine until when she wanted to find a recharge shop to recharge her phone. I opened PayTm(One of the Mobile Wallet here in India) and said I'm doing it.
Her reaction : What ? How ? You can do recharge right away from your phone ! wow !
I lost my interest on her :(
She is BTech Final Year Student

Months on this project and it STILL doesn’t work. Way too many links in the communication chain and everything is getting lost in transmission and in translation because of foreign language barriers.
All of this will be my fault when it fails, even when it’s provably actually not. The joys of being the single wringable neck.2 -
Second week sick I see how my life slowed down and how meaningless everything around is, everyone is rushing about some bullshit, name it new amazing job opportunity, black Friday great deal, super duper product idea or some most important bug on production that we need to fix asap.
All that can’t wait a week when I’m healthy?
Seriously, people lost their minds in today’s world to some bullshit.
I’m to old and to depressed to care about such idiotic things. Living my life as I want and on my own peace, don’t care everyone is running, I’m slowly walking and I like it.
It’s better to walk straight than run around like an idiot.1 -
For the first time, after 4 years, i have installed tinder. I feel depressed for having to do vengeance. And i also feel depressed for not having to do it. I feel sad for being forced to find another girl. This is not how i imagined it to be
Right now its 1-0 for my blonde ex gf. I have to have a random hookup at least a 1 night stand to make this 1-1. This is what i did before but now after experiencing love for the first time, true love in the first 2 years with her, for the first time that somebody genuinely loved me other than my parents, is very hard for me to go back to random hookups
Hookups are meaningless to me now. But i am forced. I have been given a check mate
⚠️Why do i have to be forced to fuck another girl in order to prove my girlfriend that other girls still want me, so that my girlfriend will love and want me again as well?....⚠️
Please reread this paragraph above 3 more times. Let it sink in. That is saddening to me. The more she sees how no other girl wants me, the less interest she has in me....
Im literally sitting. Listening to sad depressing "music" which is more of nature and dark rain sounds. I also started working out aggressively. I couldnt eat for 5 days due to finding chats on my blonde ex gfs phone with the other guy...
Now 8 days later... I have lost 6 kg and counting. I am barely eating. I am using the screenshots of their chats as an overdosed injection of adrenaline every time pre workout and during workout
Today she didnt text me at all. I always start the conversation first. I have to move on and i am still in disbelief that i have to do it.
My birthday is next week and the last thing i need is to spend being depressed....
I feel lost
But i have a feeling all i need to do is get rich. All i need is to get my money up and that way find more easily a new better behaved normal gf.
God help me
Forgive me God for everything
Thank you God for everything
Guide me God on the right path, for i am lost
Please.

My phone suddenly is stuck in a reboot loop.
all solutions did not work (Safemode, Recoverymode etc)
It was time for a new phone.
well... most of my logins have now 2 factor authentication. That got me thinking:
imagine that you lost all your trusted devices in a house fire.
you cannot get in your email because of you need to verify.
you cannot buy stuff online because your phone gets a message.
and in certain cases you cannot even get in your password manager of the same reason.
I know that there are recovery codes and other solutions to this.. oh boy you are F*cked when you don't have your phone.
Everything turned out okay, Sim Card in different phone for messages. And new phone works like a charm :)14 -
All this suffering in hope of a free US trip.
It was a horrible day today..
By afternoon, my eyes were stressed and my head was feeling like exploding and i had this rage against everything. I guess my BP was rising. I think this work life is taking a toll on my health.
I felt guilty doing this to myself.
As a cherry on top, on my 1 hr commute back to home, the only available seat in the bus was beside a drunk guy. I didn't give a fuck about that and choose to take that seat. He was blabbering, singing and falling off from the seat often. Everyone staring at me for daring enough to sit beside him, probably thinking I'm crazy. I'm just glad he didn't became violent, i would have lost my control otherwise.
I think I'm not made for working for other people's ideas.
But this job will decrease likelihood of my US visa application getting rejected.
I'm planning to resign from my 9 to night work life after coming back from this upcoming US trip.4 -
I've been a frontend engineer at 6 companies for the last 10 years. Both big and small companies currently at the largest I've ever worked for. I'm totally over it. Maybe burnt out is the term. I have zero motivation to do any work or coding. I'm not a lazy person. I love working, solving problems, learning new things. I'm just sick of what I do. I used to love following all the newest tech trends, following devs on twitter, checking hacker news and creating side projects. Now I feel like my job has lost all that joy and excitement. I work remote and have been for the past 3 years. I wonder how much of that, not having any social feedback and interaction around the job has attributed to me feeling like this. All the JS frameworks suck. PR reviews, process, requirements; I'm just tired of everything. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do? Were you able to find the passion for programming again?14

this is not really a programming rant, but I hate people that live by stealing from your pocket, I've lost everything... 12 cards incl. ID card2

This was meant to happen eventually with this lock-down and WFH thing. In the beginning everything was fine but then my brain has completely lost the ability to distinguish between work place and home.
I am neither able to work properly or rest/sleep and productivity is out of the window.3 -
Well, today I felt like the witch from the sleeping hollow movie.
I was working on a code that logins to a page and download files to a folder, according to the user.
Well, I tried to use the webservices from the page (like it should be) but the links were broken, and I lost a entire working day on trying the API 😮
The second day I tried with Selenium. Everything was going ok, but I wanted to run it without opening the browser and I found a “Headless Chrome”. At the end of the day, I found several blogs saying that Headless Chrome can’t download files 😱 second working day lost
Today I read about “PhantomJS”. I tried the code in C# with OpenQA.Selenium.PhantomJS BUUUUUUT it was missing 😡 I also tried with Python, but I had the same problem.
Finally, I found a blog with a solution for C# with Headless Chrome 😄random phantomjs story time missing packages chrome selenium webdriver headless webdriver automation chromedriver4 -
Just passed 2 to 3 hours learning how to model a chair when I was almost at the end my pc shutdown randomly, I lost everything... Thank you life.3

I don't know what's wrong with me..
Within one day I basically lost interest in everything I do. I just don't see the point of all this anymore.
And the bad thing is, that I don't even know where that comes from so suddenly, everything is going fine, but still.. Life just feels like pain at the moment.
Don't want do drag down someone else with me and I sincerely apologise if it's too late to mention it at this point, just hope that maybe someone here can understand what's going on or give me some advice on how to fix my situation.7 -
Have you ever hit a wall? Like you know what you want to do, you know how to do it but it will not work for absolutely no reason you can see? I've spent the better part of 5 hours trying to add an image upload to my node app and have nothing to show for it. I've tried multiple packages to no avail. I've deleted everything and started over so many times I've lost track. The only thing I can think of doing now is bashing my head off the keyboard and hope that spews out some magical code that will fix my problem.5

I think mine had to be when I was working with SQL and Lua. I was attempting to store some ints into the database but kept having it fail randomly. It was a 50/50 chance that it would succeed or fail. I tried reading errors (Limited on what I could see) after a while (Almost 3 days, since everything I could think of didn’t have issues and was completely lost) I realized the system another developer setup returned either string or int, thus it causing it to error out when I gave it a string. Once I added a tonumber statement, all my headaches went away.

any career shifters?
have u guys felt every morning not excited going to work? like every single day, you lost your joy and everything in programming and thinking about shifting a career?6 -
Fack I hate this CMS we have. Using Fetch and sending data as encoded JSON doesn't get parsed nor recognized by the CMS. I was pulling my hair out, understanding the differences, switched back to XHR... and then noticed the buggar:
XHR sends data as "FormData()".
I switched everything to FormData and TADAAA IT WORKS MOTHERFUCKA
Lost a whole fucking day on this trying to understand whether it was my code or the CMS the problem.
Ah yes, of course, I had to reproduce the CMS on my machine, instead of having the developers lend us a "development" platform on it, so obviously I don't know what's happening under the hood :))))))))rant are we in 1999 light swag cms as a shitty service life joy yolo hate death losing time for nothing darkness2 -
I lost my ability to enjoy computer games.
I really want to revisit my favorite ones (Unreal Tournament, everything made with Source Engine, also Life is Strange, Gish, some other indie games), but every time I try, I feel like alien. I feel like I don’t belong here. Every time there is nothing but sadness.
I even sold my gaming pc upon realizing that after completing Doom 2016 I haven’t played anything at all.
What do I do now?10 -
*me discovering esp32*
Wow it's amazing!
i'll get one for my project.
*me working with esp32*
I ported my project to esp32, and.....
Wtf!?! after some time (unpredictable 1sec to N mins) i2c devices stops working. (i2c reset doesn't solve)
I lost several weeks trying to fix that
I felt so angry.
then I realized that it's not my fault
it is a bad implementation of i2c api by espressif.
at this point there is only one thing to do.
throw away the esp32!
(at least for some months waiting for espressif fix)
now i did a git revert and switched back to arduino.
now everything works and it's an awesome sensation!5 -
Hi everyone... Great to be back but not feeling so great. I keep feeling... "tired", "bored", like everything I do has no fucking meaning. Like I lost all of that fun I had when I was making my own projects. I get home at 6PM from work and it feels like time passes by so fast. I can't even muster up the enthusiasm to start my own personal projects.
What do you do when you feel like this? How can I get back my enthusiasm?8 -
So this happened at a government organised 24 hour Hackathon. We had to store documents uploaded from the front end. Now we’ve been trying for a very log time but everything failed (yeah we had a crappy front end guy). Then all hell broke loose when the our team leader in hi sleep deprived state deleted our git repository while I wondered why my pushes were throwing a 404. When hell felt near we came up with the solution to encode the documents in base64 and store it in the database since we only had to show a demo😂.
Sadly enough, WE LOST. Although in retrospect it comes as no surprise.2 -
I happened to come help with a project that deadline was in two weeks. It was hardware project for customers with UI.
They said to me - help us 2 weeks and it’s done. It only needs polishing. There was nothing working and we finished it after half a year.
Hardware was crap and drivers wasn’t working. Managers called me stupid when I tried to explain that this is hardware team fault. They used to say that it was tested in laboratory and there is no defect. Laboratory my ass fucking assholes never released anything from scratch.
I got depressed after this project for a year. It was fucking nightmare.
Everything, literally everything was rewritten 3 times cause of stupid decisions that I questioned all the time. At the end of project most of those assholes stopped commenting my decisions. I believe we released impossible product that was crap but based on usage rates I got later when I left it returned expenses.
I lost like 2 years of my life and about 20kg during those 6 months. Never again. -
Wanted to work from home as usual. Logged in in citrix with my credentials and totp, started rdp to connect with the bank.
i try it for the first time: failed to connect
I try it for the second time: error 0x112d (some thing about two programs that have an the same port open)
I ask my colleagues to look after the pc in the office and what was it:
FUCKING WINDOWS UPDATE FILLED THE RAM COMPLETLY.
Luckily no data was lost, since i had everything important commited and pushed.3 -
Transferred a lot of important files in between PC with a 32 GB thumbdrive. One time, when I needed it the most, it couldn't read. It had the original up-to-date information on everything. Backup files were old and found in either emails, in another PC somewhere else and on an ex-colleagues laptop that, due to poor office management, lost track of where that laptop is.

I nearly lost all pictures I had saved of my waifu because I was using an external HD at the time that I used on both Mac and Windows. I had a temp folder on my Mac that I saved into whenever I was traveling. It piled up, so I figured it was time to merge the folders by dragging the folder from my Mac to the external HD (they had the same folder name).
The only problem was.... Mac does not merge folders. It overwrote it. I cried, freaked out, asked every tech friend I could for help, and I nearly lost everything, but I made sure to not shut the drive off. A few hours later, I plugged it into Windows, and Recuva to the rescue!
So while it was a happy ending, that was a HUGE scare for me.3 -

So, I was doing some basic engineering project at uni with a teammate but we didn't realize that we were working in a detacted head state in git (due to poor set up of the working environment on his part).
After a 3,5 hours of work, we need to push to the repo and we get an error.
I take control to try to understand what was going on, and in doing so, I (mistakenly?) check out to another branch.
Git garbage collector kicks in and we can't checkout to the previous branch anymore (where all the work was made).
My friend panics and calls the professor, who explains to us how we lost everything and there is "a 100% no hope of recovering our work".
Felt like poop. But wasn't satisfied. I had read somewhere that you don't lose stuff so easily on git. Went home.
After five minutes I was able to recover everything through git reflog feature.
Moral #1: professors should know about the existence of reflog
Moral #2: please use git plug-in in your bash /zsh. Please.1 -
how hard can it be to make a section in html/css, so that it has a nice blurry background and a fancy title on it??😩

FML..
I worked directly in my Github repo folder while working on a project (don't ask me why). I did my initial commit with all my code from the start until 5 hours ago. I never pushed.. A minute ago, I checked my commit and noticed that there were DB credentials in one of the files. So.. Smart me.. "revert commit"..
Result. Everything got deleted except my node_modules folder and the readme file.. I lost everything.. Fuck me, I'm going home..
Please, someone.. Can I get these files back via git or something? Can't find anything in in the history..9 -
Fucking hell my insights are late ones...
So I am working with fluid dynamics simulation. I went home fired up the laptop and started the calculations. This is how the events went:
9 PM: starting the calculation
10 PM: checking on the graphs to see whether everything will be alright if I leave it running. Then went to sleep.
2 AM: Waking up in shock, that I forgot to turn on autosave after every time step. Then reassured myself that this is only a test and I won't need the previous results anyway.
5 AM: waking up, everything seems to be fine. I pause the calculation hibernate the laptop and went to work.
6:40 AM on my way to the front door a stray thought struck into my mind... What if it lost contact with the licence server, while entering hibernated state. Bah never mind... It will establish a new connection when I switch it back on.
6.45 AM Switching on the laptop. Two error messages greet me.
1. Lost contact with license server.
2. Abnormal exit.
Looking on the tray the paused simulation is gone. Since I didn't enabled autosave, I have to start it all over again. Well. Lesson learned I guess. Too bad it cost 8 hours of CPU time.2 -
A man flying in a hot air balloon suddenly realizes he’s lost.
You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault."1 -

Little calculation:
you have probably around 20 days holiday per year.
After 60 year old everything is more or less a gift, so I wouldn't count on it.
Let's say you are going to work 30 years. That is 600 days to do whatever you want.
It's less than 2 years.
Shit.
Try to count how many days left of freedom.
Shit.
Suddenly all the things I have to work on today have lost all priority6 -
Building migration day. Movers were late so ended up moving my system on my own. Once everything was set up I realized there were no chairs. Once sorting out all that I realized the AC was conked, resolved to not give up and started work, the moment I loaded up all my files and started working the whole floor lost power. Currently staring out the window thinking about the meaning of life (or lack thereof) :')

Few weeks back our boss brought us (two devs) a freelance job, which was about writing some code for an existing website. We agreed on the price, and he gave all the details about ftp and etc. The website was in a shitty hosting. He said that he will arrange everything and then we can start working on it. He never did, so we continued our life. Today he called me asking if I had the source code of the project because the hosting company fucked up and everything is lost. Funny part is, I had the source code untill I left the job last week. I "rm -rf"ed my root when I left. I really hate him and as the time passes, karma fucks him for everything he has done to us.

An App/service which would help doctors and patients to schedule consultation hours. Also an patient would always have medical relevant documents as digital documents. No more waiting for faxes, no more lost diagnostic sheets everything is always in reach. No more search for an MRI appointment and no more overfilled waiting rooms. Better programms for docs! The ones ive seen in hospitals and doctors offices looks horrific..1

“A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So, he loses touch with reality and lives in a world of illusions. By thoughts I mean specifically “chatter in the skull”... perpetual and compulsive repetition of words... of reckoning and calculating.
I’m not saying thinking is bad. Like everything else, it’s useful in moderation. A good servant, but a bad master - and all so called civilized peoples have increasingly become crazy and self-destructive. Through excessive thinking, they have lost touch with reality.”4 -
True story: Today just now at about 11:50ish pm I was looking for a USB stick I've seem to have lost when my entire desk collapsed with everything on it.3

Okay guys.. I am so lost! I want to be a developer but can't decide on a certain area. Like should I be a web developer or mobile app? If I am a web developer, should I concentrate on front end or back end.. If mobile app developer.. Should I focus on Android or iOS or cross platform?
I really can't decide what to do and what to learn? Feels like to learn everything and at the end not learning actually anything.
Any suggestions guys? I will be really grateful!7 -
Thank you, mobile development. /s
Tried to create a default Navigation Drawer activity on Android Studio, result:
- Compilation erros out of nowhere
- R. couldn't compile even after cleaning and rebuilding the project
- Couldn't reverse the damage because I didn't save it before doing it (who would imagine a custom activity would do this)
- Lost 2 hours of work
I'm just not that desperate because I have the project on Github, but I'll have to make all the changes over again and it will take sometime before remembering everything. -
$rant = new Rant('PHPStorm');
When you work with Drupal 8, you tend to become psychotic because this CMS is just a humongous load of crap. But sometimes, it's just PHPStorm that's fucking with you.
This morning, I lost 2 fucking hours because I was editing a temp file instead of my controller file, and spent way too fucking many time trying to find out where it came from until I discovered the tempfile with good ol' sublime text, and realizing the original file wasn't touched since the beginning.
I wish the huge ass SQL error message I saw to no one, not even my worst enemy.
This afternoon, while refactoring a bit of code, PHPStorm suddenly starts to whine that something is either missing or shouldn't be here (gotta love PHP, heh?). So I spent a time I didn't have to copy the whole fucking function to a notepad, then copying it back bit by bit to get where the error came from.
Guess what? Nothing went wrong, everything was ok from the beginning.2 -
Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.
Pls samsung you are my favourite phone company. Fix it, it is driving me crazy!!!1 -
I wish I could do what I used to do, and get lost in programming. I used to be able to go for hours without stopping, but now I'm having trouble keeping focus for more than an hour at a time. Its making everything take far longer than it should, like this project I'm just about done with that should have been done a month ago.
It doesn't help that I'm two months behind on my rent, there's nowt but a couple of sausages left in the freezer, and I'm fast running out of coffee and cigarettes. If I could find out what the fuck is wrong with me at the moment, that'd be great.9 -
Lost my changes twice now. First time was my own fault. Was in a hurry to pick up my son from daycare so I checked in my code and locked my computer before the code was actually checked in. So today when I took "Get latest" somehow my last code from yesterday vanished. So, I rewrote everything, but now there was some problem with service references, and building the solution failed. A colleague had a look into it, but he couldn't resolve the problem neither. Instead he accidentally made an undo changes on my code, so now my code is gone again. And the solution still doesn't build. I'm just a *leetle* frustrated right now :(3

I forget pendrive at uni with my data for master paper and there are two possibilities I put it in mg lab coat or throw to backpack which has fucking hole and I lost it on my way. It takes me 40min to get to uni so I don't want to risk spendindg extra 1,5 hour to come back to home take another mobile drive and go to uni (if it isnt in my coat). I don't have second pendrive so I use my phone's sd card and want to drop my copying script on it to collect data. Something goes wrong and I cant read sd card anymore (ask for format). I had pendrive in coat so I could copy everything but on my sd card was important photos for paper. No backup ofc. I hope I could get some back somehow...

Who else is frustrated/burnout at building products that never gets into production?
When I work for a company I always tend to do everything with good practices, spend a lot of time thinking on the best ways to build x feature, and then the company falls into the infinite loop of adding stupid features, and then I've been working for 2 years and 0 paid customers. Funny that we've Sentry, GA, Hotjar sitting there doing nothing.
I'm honestly hating the startup environment rn. Good thing is that I've learnt a lot and salary is good. But also I lost all motivation.
Any recommendations for a tired dev?7 -
yesterday, I just swapped my sim card for some time with another. Placed it back....and voila! I can't enable data connection. I lost all my apn settings. To add to this, neither is it auto fetching the apns, nor i can manually change it! It shows some fucking error "apn settings not available for this user". I have another phone with same android version (lollipop) and everything works smoothly on it. These guys just broke everything after giving an upgrade from kitkat. Auto brightness stops working after a few hours, random reboots.... This is it... bye bye stock rom!

ive been coding all day for days and as i was sitting trying to code more features something mentally hit me like, invisible falcon punched me, like something snapped inside my mind and i literally lost balance in my brain and could not control my balance, if i stood up i would instantly fall down, picture it as trying to walk without bones in your body, fortunately i was sitting down on the chair so i didnt collapse on the floor, it felt like there was no gravity and i was just floating, but my head started falling down on the table as i was sitting, it was outside of my control, and then everything started fading to black, my brain could not even think anything at this moment, i wanted to speak but i forgot how to speak words, not even joking, turned out i slipped into unconsciousness for a few moments and got back up, slowly regaining my balance and speech/consciousness control.
what the fuck just happened
i am surprised i could remember everything what happened until i blacked out
why didnt anyone warn me these are the consequences of working extraordinarily harder?6 -
Another on workflow:
When the IT department thinks it's a good idea to limit the snooze function in windows update to ten minutes, and of course, you think about that half a day you'd need just restoring the workspace and get back into the groove, so you decide to postpone and remember to do so again.
Then like clockwork (literally and figuratively): within twenty minutes the machine reboots because you were too focused to notice the notification again.. And all is lost.
Ok, so windows does a good job restoring everything now, but that's Windows 10 while work uses 7. The conclusion is the same: IT department should focus on their tangled cables, things they know. -
cataloguing and accounting for known unknowns and knowing when exactly you need to turn them into knowns (if ever).
basically getting used to the idea that you're always in some way and to some degree stumbling in/through the dark because your light is too dim to illuminate everything, so you have to choose the right direction to point it in. getting lost isn't not knowing what's everywhere around, it's not knowing what's in the specific direction that you need to go in.
oh and, also, sadly, this shouldn't be true, but at least in my life it is: there's nobody to ask for help when you're the one others come to to ask for help. either I solve something, or it will stay unsolved. which is... stressful and exhausting, and often desperation-inducing, but i guess it is what it is...1 -
had this professor for Formal Methods and Logic who would show up clueless as fuck didn't use the internet to communicate any information. Didn't post notes or anything. Didn't have our quizzes pre-printed and showed up late to a class because he went into the GIANT by campus and was "lost like a monkey staring at shiny objects" (-his words not mine) Also guy didn't know how to teach and said everything was trivial when you would ask questions. He was an asshole and unfortunately tenured.

I declared it a Heisenbug!
So, basically I was starting multiple threads...
I was getting a list index out of range on line 268 which was a dict. Strange.
36 hours later, a lot of changes, I was still having the same error whatever I put on line 268, log, try, but when I got it on a comment... I lost it.
Restarted Pycharm.
Reset the branch to remote.
Everything worked fine.

Hi fellow devRanters, I need some advice on how to detect web traffic coming from bad/malicious bots and block them.
I have ELK (Elastic) stack set up to capture the logs from the sites, I have already blocked the ones that are obviously bad (bad user-agent, IP addresses known for spamming etc). I know you can tell by looking at how fast/frequently they crawl the site but how would I know if I block the one that's causing the malicious and non-human traffic? I am not sure if I should block access from other countries because I think the bots are from local.
I am lost, I don't know what else I can do - I can't use rate limiting on the sites and I can't sign up for a paid service cause management wants everything with the price of peanuts.
Rant:
Someone asked why I can't just read through the logs (from several mid-large scale websites) and pick out the baddies.
*facepalm* Here's the gigabytes log files.9 -
I cant wrap my head around designing a database system from scratch. Period.
I use ER diagrams to do it. But still i can't figure this piece of shit out.
It usually goes in these steps:
1) i design a very simple minimal system, turns out it works but HELL NO how unsalable it is. Literally its so statically built that i have to redesign the whole infrastructure and models from scratch
2) i redesign from scratch but this time i overengineer it. Overcomplex as fuck. So complex i get lost easily and have to redesign the whole shit all over again this time copying others similar infrastructure with help of chatgpt
3) chatgpt of course fucks everything up even more to the point that my shit can't compile anymore. Fuck this shit
I think i lack the correct way of thinking and approaching this. College has taught me bullshit and confused me even more which is why im so fucking lost. Can someone explain me How to think in the correct mentality when designing an ER database system from scratch.
How do i properly design a scalable database infrastructure as ER diagram for a subscription and chatting models, similar to onlyfans infrastructure?9 -
How broken is z-index implementation on Chrome?!
Almost an hour lost today, due to perfectly fine web code running on Firefox, but showing completely wrong z-order on Chrome.
The reason? I manually changed the z-index of a child and not the one from the parent DIV. (and I was only making the child z-order *higher* than everything else on screen, so I could drag it around)
Code now has a bunch of "// thanks Chrome!" to show due appreciation. Grrr....1 -
EXPERT IN STOLEN CRYPTOCURRENCY RECOVERY- RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY
My all time dream was growing my savings through forex trading, drawn by the allure of high returns and the promise of financial growth. When I discovered an online platform that claimed to offer consistent returns with minimal risk, it seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up. The website was professionally designed, customer service was responsive, and the initial returns on my investments were encouraging. Lured by these assurances, I invested a significant amount—$760,000 over several months. At first, everything appeared to be going as planned. My account was credited with gains, and I was even able to withdraw some profits, which reinforced my belief in the platform's legitimacy. This initial success only fueled my confidence, making the subsequent events all the more devastating. Then, without any prior warning or explanation, the situation took a drastic turn. One day, I found myself unable to access the platform. My account balance had mysteriously vanished, and attempts to reach the company were met with silence. The website, which had once been sleek and functional, was now inaccessible. My heart sank as I realized the gravity of the situation—I had been scammed. The shock and despair that followed were overwhelming. The realization that I had lost everything I had invested was paralyzing. The sense of betrayal and helplessness was compounded by the apparent finality of the situation—no access to my funds, no way to contact the company, and no clear recourse for recovering my losses. Just when I was about to give up hope, I stumbled upon a service called Rapid Digital Recovery. Initially, I was skeptical, having been burned once already. However, Rapid Digital Recovery presented itself as a specialized firm with a track record of recovering funds lost to online scams. They offered a structured process that included an initial assessment of my case, followed by steps aimed at tracing and recovering the lost assets. I decided to reach out to them, sharing all the relevant information about the platform and my investments. The team at Rapid Digital Recovery reviewed my case thoroughly and provided me with a plan of action. They explained their process, which involved legal measures, digital forensics, and negotiations with financial institutions to track down and reclaim the lost funds. Although the recovery process was intricate and time-consuming, Rapid Digital Recovery's expertise and dedication provided a glimmer of hope. They kept me informed throughout the process, which helped restore some of my lost confidence. With their help, I began to see progress in retrieving my assets. While the journey was challenging and not without its setbacks, Rapid Digital Recovery's intervention turned my situation from one of utter despair to a path towards recovery. I'm lost here 😑! Got a new job and I supposed to analyze/fix/update/ the communication softwares/hardwares internally. Data security is insanely important and everything should be inexpensive 😑. Any suggestion what I can use as softwares and communication tools?7

As a construction worker, my life has always revolved around hard labor and integrity. The foundations I build aren’t just physical structures; they represent my commitment to my family and community. However, everything changed when I became a victim of a cryptocurrency scam that left me devastated. It all began innocently enough. Like many others, I was intrigued by the potential of cryptocurrency investments. I researched and ultimately decided to work with a broker who appeared reputable at first glance. The allure of significant returns was hard to resist, and I found myself investing £40,000, believing I was making a smart financial decision. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the facade to crumble. When I attempted to withdraw my funds, the broker became unresponsive. Alarm bells started ringing, but it was too late. I had fallen victim to a sophisticated scam that drained my savings and left my family and me feeling hopeless. After exhausting all options, including filing a police report and reporting the scam to various authorities, we felt defeated and powerless.Just when I thought all was lost, a friend reached out to me with a glimmer of hope. He referred me to Digital Web Recovery, a firm that specializes in recovering lost funds from scams. Initially, I was skeptical. How could a team of professionals help me reclaim my hard-earned money after I had already felt so let down by the system? But my desperation outweighed my doubts, and I decided to give them a try. From the moment I contacted Digital Web Recovery, I was met with professionalism and empathy. The team took the time to understand my situation, patiently explaining the recovery process in detail. They assured me that I was not alone in this fight, and their commitment to helping me regain my funds was evident. Throughout the recovery process, they kept me updated at every stage, which alleviated some of my anxieties. I appreciated their transparency and the way they worked diligently to trace my lost funds. Their expertise was apparent, and their determination gave me hope during a time when I desperately needed it.After weeks of effort, I received the news I had been hoping for: a significant portion of my funds had been successfully recovered. I can’t thank Digital Web Recovery enough for their support during this challenging time. I got android nougat on my phone and of course my root was gone
It was dearly easy, but along the step of doing it I had to format some partitions (like /data), after that I flashed some zips and put the backup of my data partition back on my phone
Pictures where missing, some app data where missing, also WhatsApp pictures and videos
Turns out, twrp saves pretty much everything, but leaves out the user data folder, where all of that stuff would've been
I'm just happy that I'm not one of those people who don't need to keep thousands of pictures
I don't really know what kind of stuff I lost, probably not too important -
EXPERT STOLEN CRYPTO RECOVERY SERVICES ONLINE ⁚ HIRE DIGITAL HACK RECOVERY COMPANY
If I could offer one crucial piece of advice, it would be this: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. I learned this the hard way in early 2024 when I was drawn into a crypto arbitrage scheme while living in Australia. The platform claimed it could help me effortlessly exploit price differences in cryptocurrencies across various exchanges. They offered a user-friendly app and appeared to have guaranteed strategies, even boasting the use of AI for trading.Initially, everything seemed promising. I started with $4,000, motivated by daily updates showing my balance steadily increasing. In just a few weeks, I watched my account soar to $12,000, which tempted me to invest even more. The consistent, modest gains felt reassuring, and I began to imagine the possibilities that came with this newfound wealth. However, when I attempted to withdraw my funds, the problems began. The first hurdle was a withdrawal fee. At the time, I didn't think much of it. But then, I was hit with requests for additional fees: an exchange commission, followed by a supposed tax settlement fee. Each time I thought I was one step closer to accessing my money, another obstacle emerged. I ended up paying nearly $20,000 in various fees, all without ever seeing a cent of my profits.Eventually, the company went silent, leaving me devastated. I felt ashamed for having fallen for such a sophisticated scam, but also furious at how cleverly it had been orchestrated. I spent months researching and searching for a solution to recover my lost funds. That’s when I discovered Digital Hack Recovery, a team that specializes in recovering lost digital assets. Their expertise turned out to be invaluable. They worked diligently to access my accounts and recover not only my initial investment but also the earnings I had accumulated. To my surprise, they managed to transfer everything back to my bank account seamlessly.Digital Hack Recovery restored my faith in the possibility of reclaiming lost assets and gave me hope in an otherwise dire situation. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, I strongly encourage you to reach out to them. Their assistance can make a world of difference in navigating the aftermath of such scams.
