This story is 100% true.
I got hired onto a team of construction workers to build a house. We set up a meeting with Management to find out what kind of house they wanted us to build, where’s the floor plan, what it’s going to be used for, who it’s for, etc. Management said that they didn’t know all that, we should just get started. They told us that we were going to use “Agile” which means that we just work on small deliverables and build the thing incrementally.
The developer team lead argued that we at least need to know how big the thing is going to be so that we can get started pouring the foundation, but Management told him they just don’t know. “What we do know,” Management said, “is that the house is going to have a bathroom. Just start there, and we’ll know more when it’s done. You have two weeks.”
So we just bought a port-a-potty, and screwed around on the internet for two weeks. Management was outraged. “You call this a house? This is the worst house ever! It doesn’t even have a tv!”
So we bought a tv and put it in the port-a-potty, attached to an outdoor generator. We were going to buy a a dvd player and get it hooked up to cable, but Management rejected the expense request, saying that they didn’t know if we needed it, and we’d come back to that later.
Management decided that we definitely need storage space, so we bought a boxcar and duct-taped the port-a-potty to it. Then to our horror they set up some desks and put a few miserable business interns in there. It went on like this…
After a few years the boxcar grew into a huge, ramshackle complex. It floods, leaks, it’s frozen in the winter and an oven in the summer. You have to get around in a strange maze of cardboard tubes, ladders and slides. There are two equally horrible separate buildings. We’re still using just the one outdoor generator for all power, so electricity is tightly rationed.
Communication between the buildings was a problem. For one of them, we use a complex series of flag signals. For the other we write notes on paper, crumple the paper up, and toss it over. Both of these methods were suggested as jokes, but Management really liked them for some reason. The buildings mostly talk to each other but they have to talk through us, so most of what we do is pass messages on.
It was suggested that we use paper airplanes instead of crumpled up balls, but the fat, awkward fingers of the Business Majors who inevitably take those jobs couldn’t be trained to make them. I built an awesome automatic paper airplane folder, but once again they couldn’t be trained to use it, so they just went back to crumpling the notes up in balls.
The worst part of all this is that it’s working. Everyone is miserable, but the business is making money. The bright side is that this nightmare complex is done so now we know what kind of building they actually needed in the first place, so we can start work on it. Obviously we can’t tell Management anything about what we’re doing until it’s finished. They noticed the gigantic hole in the ground where the foundation is coming in, but we told them that it’s a cache reset, and they mostly ignore it except when the occasional customer falls in.
I’ll probably be out of here before the new building gets finished. I could get a 50% raise by switching jobs, but Management still doesn’t think I should get a raise because I missed a couple sprints.7 -

Watched the Winter Olympics opening ceremony where they have 1200 drones flying in unison to make amazing shapes in the sky with lights. Truly astonishing. It took a large team weeks / months to prepare.
BBC commentator “wow that must have taken someone hours”
Fuck you you dumb fuck ignorant cunt. It’s oxygen thiefs like you that put so much pressure on dev teams to do monumental tasks in ridiculous amounts of time.

Shittiest rant of the week. Winter isn't the happiest time of the year to begin with, and now you're reminding 40k devs that they have no friends.13

How do i learn coding in single night? - someone asked me.
I gently replied : Pack your Laptop, and travel to North Pole in beginning of winter, you'll have 6 month of night to learn coding.
Once there - really just Google it there are tons of Excellent tutorials on web.6 -
This is kind of a horror story, with a happing ending. It contains a lot of gore images, and some porn. Very long story.
TL;DR Network upgrade
Once upon a time, there were two companies HA and HP, both owned by HC. Many years went by and the two companies worked along side each one another, but sometimes there were trouble, because they weren't sure who was supposed to bill the client for projects HA and HP had worked on together.
At HA there was an IT guy, an imbecile of such. He's very slow at doing his job, doesn't exactly understand what he's doing, nor security principles.
The IT guy at HA also did some IT work for HP from time to time when needed. But he was not in charge of the infrastructure for HP, that was the jobb for one developer who didn't really know what he was doing either.
Whenever a new server was set up at HP, the developer tried many solutions, until he landed on one, but he never removed the other tested solutions, and the config is scattered all around. And no documentation!!
Same goes with network, when something new was added, the old was never removed or reconfigured to something else.
One dark winter, a knight arrived at HP. He had many skills. Networking, server management, development, design and generally a fucking awesome viking.
This genius would often try to cleanse the network and servers, and begged his boss to let him buy new equipment to replace the old, to no prevail.
Whenever he would look in the server room, he would get shivers down his back.
(Image: https://i.bratteng.xyz/Ie9x3YC33C.j...)
One and a half year later, the powerful owners in HA, HP and HC decided it was finally time to merge HA and HP together to HS. The knight thought this was his moment, he should ask CEO if he could be in charge of migrating the network, and do a complete overhault so they could get 1Gb interwebz speeds.
The knight had to come up with a plan and some price estimates, as the IT guy also would do this.
The IT guy proposed his solution, a Sonicwall gateway to 22 000 NOK, and using a 3rd party company to manage it for 3000 NOK/month.
"This is absurd", said the knight to the CEO and CXO, "I can come up with a better solution that is a complete upgrade. And it will be super easy to manage."
The CEO and CXO gave the knight a thumbs up. The race was on. We're moving in 2 months, I got to have the equipment by then, so I need a plan by the end of the week.
He roamed the wide internet, looked at many solutions, and ended up with going for Ubiquiti's Unifi series. Cheap, reliable and pretty nice to look at.
The CXO had mentioned the WiFi at HA was pretty bad, as there was WLAN for each meeting room, and one for the desks, so the phone would constantly jump between networks.
So the knight ended up with this solution:
2x Unifi Securtiy Gateway Pro 4
2x Unifi 48port
1x Unifi 10G 16port
5x Unifi AP-AC-Lite
12x pairs of 10G unifi fibre modules
All with a price tag around the one Sonicwall for 22 000 NOK, not including patch cables, POE injectors and fibre cables.
The knight presented this to the CXO, whom is not very fond of the IT guy, and the CXO thought this was a great solution.
But the IT guy had to have a say at this too, so he was sent the solution and had 2 weeks to dispute the soltion.
Time went by, CXO started to get tired of the waiting, so he called in a meeting with the knight and the IT guy, this was the IT guys chance to dispute the solution.
All he had to say was he was familiar with the Sonicwall solution, and having a 3rd party company managing it is great.
He was given another 2 weeks to dispute the solution, yet nothing happened.
The CXO gave the thumbs up, and the knight orders the equipment.
At this time, the knight asks the IT guy for access to the server room at HA, and a key (which would take 2 months to get sorted, because IT guys is a slow imbecile)
The horrors, Oh the horrors, the knight had never seen anything like this before.
(Image: https://i.bratteng.xyz/HfptwEh9qT.j...)
(Image: https://i.bratteng.xyz/HfptwEh9qT.j...)
(Image: https://i.bratteng.xyz/hmOE2ZuQuE.j...)
(Image: https://i.bratteng.xyz/4Flmkx6slQ.j...)
What are all these for, why is there a fan ductaped to on of the servers.
WHAT IS THIS!
Why are there cables tied in a knot.
WHY!
These are questions we never will know the answers too.
The knight needs access to the servers, and sonicwall to see how this is configured.
After 1.5 month he gains access to the sonicwall and one of the xserve.
What the knight discovers baffles him.
All ports are open, sonicwall is basically in bridge mode and handing out public IPs to every device connected to it.
No VLANs, everything, just open...10 -

Winter break is next week and I don't know what to do...
I have an exciting programming project I want to work on!
Buuuut, I also have this 1,500 page book I want to read!
Buuuuuuut, my manuscript still needs some work! I want to work on it as well.
If I do all three, I won't get to finish anything, so only one task during break.
Three of my favorite things... Why must choices be so difficult?
Also, the picture is the 1K page book I bought. :) It's beautiful!

Sometimes when I need a break from coding and life... I gather a bunch of wood and have a bonfire In my backyard late into the night and listen to Alan watts for hours... Our boss keeps mentioning that the company is good to people who put in long hours and work weekends. We're all salary and there's no extra money on the table; just references to bonuses.
I'm sure when I'm 75 and in hospital with pneumonia, the last thing going through my head will be, "Man, I wished I had worked more hours on that backend for the app for that fast food company that gives the world diabetes."
The company can't give me summer back. It can't give me a 30C day in the middle of the winter. Even asking employees to work long hours and on weekends constantly is a sign of poor management, poor planning and the inability to value people's individual time.7 -
I don't find a hoodie or sweater in the devRant swag store. Since winter is almost here, is it possible to see some in the store soon? Cos man, I'll wear the crap out of it!6

Life is mostly about waiting.
Waiting for code to compile.
Waiting for payment confirmation.
Waiting for food.
Waiting for gas to fill up tank.
Waiting for lights to go green.
Waiting for beer.
Waiting for waiter.
Waiting for call.
Waiting for school to finish or start.
Waiting for exam.
Waiting for job.
Waiting for application to start.
Waiting inside prison.
Waiting inside workplace.
Waiting for summer or winter.
Waiting for movie to start.
Waiting for girl to dress up.
Waiting for birthday.

Sick.
Worst sleep of my life last night.
Freezing cold, weak, sore, can’t think, starving but can’t eat or drink, as low energy as a dead Chinese “heavy duty” battery.
Finished some changes to my feature today anyway; everything should be done now. Refactored some specs, and got them all to pass.
Falling asleep on my closet floor. Heavy winter coat, fuzzy pants, space heater. It’s warm in here and there’s a shelf for my lappy. Floor is uncomfortable but idc. I’m so tired and out of it I don’t even notice.
This sucks.
At least I have the rest of the week off.17 -

I know I am late to this but I have a happy story for this one.
My first dev job was awesome. Except for the pay. I had interviewed and taken the job based on the fact that I was done with my master's degree, but because of a paperwork snafu I wouldn't be receiving my degree until the spring. I was assured that if I provided proof of my degree when it was awarded I would get a pay rise in relation to my education. Well that was not to be. So this professionally and socially inept bitch I was working with was going to be ahead of me in her career because the people I worked for gave pay raises based on time served rather than ability and education.
So I started interviewing for other positions. Especially after government furloughs cut my pay by 20% for 11 weeks, causing me to max out my credit cards. All of my coworkers had my back. They went to the upper management and the higher ranking military people we worked for and explained the situation. They were my job references for my interviews. They got me a job that paid double what I was making. I still get the warm fuzzies thinking about it.
They were some of the sweetest people I had ever worked with. One of them gave my mom and brother a ride to the airport when I crashed my car. They bought me lunch when I was in dire straights. I really would have loved to stay but I couldn't afford it. That and winter in Utah fucking blows.2 -

Harsh truth:
My side SaaS project made more money in its first month (built late winter last year, MVP released after ~3 weeks of development) than the sTaRtUp I work for over its total lifetime so far (built over 3+ months, MVP released in May last year)
...is it time to rage quit?
Often I have dreams of going full-time solo dev, leaving every idiotic, clueless, fumbling clown behind, but I feel like I just don't have the financial runway to do it. However, even from just a few months in 2021 while I was on the job hunt, I created some side revenue streams which I'm still receiving decent revenues from (selling courses, saas products, minor freelancing). I'm just not 100% sure if I was "lucky" during this time period, or if a few more months going at it I'd be able to scrape my way towards a meager (though livable!) income.

Temperature causing temper!!!
Summer 2009...
Me: Dad, can me and sis go swim in the pool?
Dad: No son, you can only swim if it's 25°C or higher.
Which in practice meant that we could only swim a few days each summer. Average in Belgium used to be about 21°C.
Spring 2019, my younger siblings...
Little sis: Mom, can we go swim in the pool?
Mom: Lol sure, it's only April but it's already way hot enough.. and during summer it'll be too hot to do the work on setting up the pool anyway.
Winter 2029, in Antarctica...
Me, to my children: During my old days my children, we had this thing called snow!! And we lived in the wasteland that used to be the glorious Europe, back when it was still habitable.. you should've seen it, now it's a desert, but back then it was awesome!
My children: Mum!! He's acting senile again, and talking about things that don't exist!!!
Coming to the crux of the problem right now, fuck me.. I'm tired as fuck but can't sleep because already in the fucking spring, my house is too fucking hot to be able to sleep without sweating like a pig!!!

Electric cars are not better for the environment. All petrol cars combined are only responsible for 7.9% of CO2 emissions. If your electric car is charged from a grid that is powered by a coal-burning power station, it contributes nothing to dealing with climate change. It only provides you with the false sense of security, and you can look cool telling your friends that “you know, I drive a Tesla, I’m environmentally conscious, your gas car is bad”.
Electric cars are lame. When I’m out of fuel, I can refuel fully in minutes. With electric car, I’ll have to wait at least five hours. Let’s be realistic, superchargers aren’t common, and will never be.
Gasoline is 46.4 MJ/kg, or 34.2 MJ/l. Li-Ion is 0.36–0.875. Let’s be generous and say it’s 0.9. To match 1 kg of petrol, I would need 51 kilos of batteries.
Average gas tank is 18 gallons, or 68 litres. To match that, my battery must have a weight of 2.5 metric tonnes. Bear in mind, empty battery and full battery has the same weight. Also, bear in mind, batteries perform worse in the winter.
As per energy density and practicality, things don’t get much better than petrol. Liquid hydrogen has higher energy density, but to store it, gas tank has to have very, very thick walls, to withstand the pressure. And, hydrogen is a bitch. It’s extremely dangerous. You can’t smell it until it’s too late. Hydrogen-air mixture will explode if you look at it the wrong way.
All that “electric cars good for climate” hype is merely Elon maintaining his stock bubble.23 -

If you can be locked out of it remotely, you don't own it.
On May 3rd, 2019, the Microsoft-resembling extension signature system of Mozilla malfunctioned, which locked out all Firefox users out of their browsing extensions for that day, without an override option. Obviously, it is claimed to be "for our own protection". Pretext-o-meter over 9000!
BMW has locked heated seats, a physical interior feature of their vehicles, behind a subscription wall. This both means one has to routinely spend time and effort renewing it, and it can be terminated remotely. Even if BMW promises never to do it, it is a technical possibility. You are in effect a tenant in a car you paid for. Now imagine your BMW refused to drive unless you install a software update. You are one rage-quitting employee at BMW headquarters away from getting stuck on a side of a road. Then you're stuck in an expensive BMW while watching others in their decade-old VW Golf's driving past you. Or perhaps not, since other stuck BMWs would cause traffic jams.
Perhaps this horror scenario needs to happen once so people finally realize what it means if they can be locked out of their product whenever the vendor feels like it.
Some software becomes inaccessible and forces the user to update, even though they could work perfectly well. An example is the pre-installed Samsung QuickConnect app. It's a system app like the Wi-Fi (WLAN) and Bluetooth settings. There is a pop-up that reads "Update Quick connect", "A new version is available. Update now?"; when declining, the app closes. Updating requires having a Samsung account to access the Galaxy app store, and creating such requires providing personally identifiable details.
Imagine the Bluetooth and WiFi configuration locking out the user because an update is available, then ask for personal details. Ugh.
The WhatsApp messenger also routinely locks out users until they update. Perhaps messaging would cease to work due to API changes made by the service provider (Meta, inc.), however, that still does not excuse locking users out of their existing offline messages. Telegram does it the right way: it still lets the user access the messages.
"A retailer cannot decide that you were licensing your clothes and come knocking at your door to collect them. So, why is it that when a product is digital there is such a double standard? The money you spend on these products is no less real than the money you spend on clothes." – Android Authority ( https://androidauthority.com/digita... ).
A really bad scenario would be if your "smart" home refused to heat up in winter due to "a firmware update is available!" or "unable to verify your subscription". Then all you can do is hope that any "dumb" device like an oven heats up without asking itself whether it should or not. And if that is not available, one might have to fall back on a portable space heater, a hair dryer or a toaster. Sounds fun, huh? Not.
Cloud services (Google, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.) can, by design, lock out the user, since they run on the computers of the service provider. However, remotely taking away things one paid for or has installed on ones own computer/smartphone violates a sacred consumer right.
This is yet another benefit of open-source software: someone with programming and compiling experience can free the code from locks.
I don't care for which "good purpose" these kill switches exist. The fact that something you paid for or installed locally on your device can be remotely disabled is dystopian and inexcuseable.12 -
With the winter months fast approaching I am putting serious consideration into smuggling a blanket into my desk drawer after hours so that when it gets really cold due to the a/c, I can just whip out the blanket and code at work wrapped up like a burrito.
Yes, for sure, there will be looks, but I don't much care and it'll also be the day remembered as the day someone brought blankets into work.3 -
-10C winter is unpleasant. -20C winter is dangerous.
-40C winter is cruel. This was the reality of living in Komi Republic — the place I was born in.
Winters there combine extreme dryness with extreme cold. Steel on steel always sparks — gotta be careful at gas stations. Because there is no wind, you don’t actually feel like you’re freezing until it’s too late. If you’re drunk — and everyone there was drunk — you’re walking home, you see a bench, you think: “I’ll just rest for five minutes, no big deal”, and you’re found frozen to death the following morning.
My grandpa once forgot one year old me on the street at night, while — you guessed it — going to get something to drink. I spent something like three hours out there.
I barely made it. Now, my legs don’t feel cold anymore.7 -
So my company was building a software to allow users to use a screen without the screen being touch itself.
It was made using a camera above the screen and then with openCV detect where the hand was.
Anyway I had to test it on the place.
And the place was a factory where they did produce pipes.
It's the biggest company in my city, and yet I was there, in the break room, coding a raspberry in winter in a factory.
The only source of heat was the fire used to melt the metal
That was literally awesome2 -

How to deter me from working remotely.
Make the Remote Desktop app now catch ALT+TAB...
Well at least it isn't winter...1 -
So I had this internship in highschool for some marketing company creating simple databases for them to help out with their business.
When I came back from college for I think winter break they had asked if I would come in to help with a task that was going to take all day so they wanted me to come early. I agree and show up the next morning.
They had an Excel spreadsheet with about 5000 records in it and one of the fields was the name of the customer. They told me that the records came in as lastName, firstName or as lastName, firstName.
They wanted the field to look like firstName lastName. For a minute or two they had someone show me how they have been doing this which was just by hand. I don't really work with Excel so im not too keen with the macros. But it took me about 1 Google and 30 seconds to find someone with a similar macro to achieve this, I altered it a bit and let it go through all the records.
It was an awesome feeling when I went to the boss to let them know I was done (it had only been 10 mins), they almost didnt believe me.
Funny how one line of code can turn a day's work into a matter of minutes.2 -

Missed some of you. A lot of you really.
Anything exciting happen while I was gone?
I heard some of you formed a mob, dragged a spammer out behind the wood shed and beat em bloody.
Sad to say I missed that.
I'm currently eeking by financially, but got my plans for the fall winter and spring. Gym membership, rock climbing, prepping for a 5k. Weathers perfect for all of it.
I'm in a competition right now for some serious prize money and in the lead.
Enough to start that AI lab and finish my game.
Also, not everything is sunshine and roses. I sleep 3-6 hours a night average, (5-6 if I'm lucky), and horrible mood swings, with or without sleep. And isolation, damn the isolation is terrible, but my schedule is so hectic I basically have no room for any real-world contacts. I can barely make time for myself, let alone my family.
But I'm still writing poetry and music at least, and got my eye on some land for a cabin or other uses like for an office.
Whats going good/bad in your life?

Here's to that 70 year old man who is still waiting for his son to return from the dead, to that 12 year old child whose parents just split up, to that girl who thought winter would be unbearable. Here's to that silent lover who is yet to tell the girl that he exists, to that girl whose new year text to her crush failed to yield more than a blue tick. Here's to that couple who had their child, to that scientist whose data sets are turning out to be promising, to that scholar who made it to the last of the Interview rounds.
Here's to that cancer patient who went into remission.
Here's to that boy who got a Hi message from his crush, to that girl who is getting married.
Here's to all those promises and resolutions. Once again. The ones we couldn't keep, and the ones we kept. Here's to that promise that our GPA shall rise again, that all the incomplete MOOC courses will someday be done.
Here's to the beauty of fantastic beasts, Star Wars, sense8, Westworld and all the films and TV shows that made us happy.
Here's to life that goes on. Uninterrupted. Fearless. Still.

I hate the feeling you get when you do a lengthy, drooling task that once finished got you nowhere.
My day was mostly productive for a Sunday, woke up late as all Sundays, spent the afternoon writing a proposal and exercising when I saw a notification for a homework for tonight at 12.
A research paper about Dijkstra's philosopher problem, 8 pages minimum. To be honest I've seen the problem a long time ago while studying C++ and I had the theory down and that is my issue, it becomes inherently boring and useless in my head. Is in this situations that my mind gets lazy.
I wrote the first 3 pages in half an hour but I was done, I started revising the proposal and fixed a calculation error, checked Rust's take on the philosophers issue and decided to save it for winter break along with learning Rust (although got some basics down), made rough budget approximations for the next 3 months, lost myself a little bit on deep house music (notable tracks tadow from masego, nevermind - Dennis Lloyd and gold - Chet faker), etc...all in all it took me 3 hours more to finish the assignment, including breaks and dinner.
I am working on a lot of stuff lately and my main project's sprint ends this Tuesday and it pisses me off, after all that I learnt nothing new, got nowhere with my project and will probably get 80 because Google docs has no margin setting. Worse than being lazy for fun is inevitably being lazy for being compelled to do low priority tasks by your head's standards.

After first snowfall this year, I’m trying to sleep but all I hear are cars sliding all over the place on my street.
Just let me sleep.1 -
A few months ago I bought an e scooter to get from home to work.
The backstory to this:
My car broke down on the highway, my sister's car broke down on the highway and we didn't have another car apart of my dad's anymore.
Which means I had to look for another car. The cars between 1k-5k € are dogshit and when you want to register the car you have to have an appointment at a government building which happens to be closed when I'm getting out of my 8-5 job.
I had enough and bought an e scooter.
Now back to now:
In the beginning it was cool.
Could get anywhere I wanted to in combination with the Germany ticket. Except for the Netherlands where my beautiful girlfriend is.
There I can legally not use it but that's ok lol.
The German government is hyping e mobility and public transportation up, but for what?
E mobility currently sucks ass with all the shit laws for e.g. e scooters and when you want to transport it in public transport, people give you weird looks, the bus driver wants you to buy a bicycle ticket even if I can fold the e scooter and more. The scanners in the bus of the German buses cannot read my German ticket for some reason and every bus driver in my city knows that and they just look at it and are like "Ok, you're cool. Continue moving", but this old grandma looking ass bitch is like "No, according to the law you need to show it to the scanner and not to me". I fucking know. I've been doing this shit for a year and you know that but it doesn't work. It says to me that I need to show it to you instead of to the scanner bc this machine is fucking dumb and apparently I'm holding the people because I started a discussion with her. This driver ... ugh. The buses in my city come whenever they want as well.
Like sometimes 5 minutes earlier, sometimes up to 30 minutes later.
Inconsistent motherfuckers and I am the one making everyone wait? Suck my donkey kong balls.
German trains... well you know how that goes. It doesn't. It sucks ass.
Every single fucking train line has a problem. Either a previous train has something, or staff is missing, or a technical error or the train driver's ass is itchy and needs scratches from his assistant. There's always something.
When I want to travelled home from my gf I spent not lying 8 fucking hours on the trains on Sunday.
Normally it takes max. 5 hours with a train and 3-4 hours with a car.
I can also go on a rant because of the Dutch train system because it also sucks, BUT they are reliable. They are there when they say they are gonna be there. 99% of the times.
In Germany it is somewhere at 10%.
Now I realized that e scooters are uncomfortable and expensive toys who need maintenance just like a car but nonetheless they are reliable unlike the public transport.
In the winter it will be even worse.
Electrical cars are way expensive and affordable electrical cars you need to keep charging every few baby steps.
I also looked at 125ccm motorcycles which you can drive if you upgrade your existing car driver's license, but ngl that's a scam. Not worth it at all.
And that's why I am looking for a traditional car now. E mobility is not there yet in Germany and public transport is not doable at this moment.15 -
Winter break university projects:
Option A: implement writing and reading floating point decimals in Assembly (with SSE)
Option B: reuse the reading and writing module from Option A, and solve a mathematical problem with SSE vectorization
Option C: Research the entirety of the internet to actually understand Graphs, then use Kruskal's algorithm to decide that a graph is whole or not (no separated groups) - in C++
Oh, and BTW there's one week to complete all 3...
I don't need life anyways... -
Cat-warming solution when the power goes out
Problem: Your power goes out in the middle of winter. Your cat is cold and will not leave you alone. You are her only source of heat.
Step 1: Find battery-powered laptop.
Step 2: Power on laptop and turn off sleep/hibernation in the settings.
Step 3: Open up 5 instances of Minecraft and load a single-player world in each.
Step 4: Close laptop and flip it upside down
Step 5: Place cat on computer above the fan. Cat will begin to purr.
(Yes this works)2 -
Mandatory winter break means mandatory.
Getting PR requests from a team mate during company wide holiday PTO. Asked him wtf he was doing, manager told him he had to work.
NOT the managers call! This is going to HR on the 2nd9 -
Always get into a slight existential crisis during this time of winter.
Is my job worth all the trouble? Should I sell my house? Break up with my love? Start using a different programming language?
Probably has something to do with the psychological effect of this arbitrary point where we consider a year to end, and begin a new one.
I have no idea yet. I think my job is the first one to go, the rest is probably salvageable. -
Ugh, I know I sound like an u grateful little brat, but summer holidays just aren't for me.
I hate wasting my time on the beach.
I hate the feeling of skin burn.
I fucking despise people that don't give a flying fuck about other's comfort and blast Disco Polo on their own JBL speakers. Even though there's music provided by the hotel.
Also babies, babies everywhere, crying and dashing around. My head hurts when I think about flying back. And I LIKE airplanes. But not when every baby and their mothers are crying on the top of their lungs.
Winter is so much better. Skiing is great and I don't have to worry all the time about getting skin cancer.11 -
In these GOT times,
managers will suffer,
PRs will not be merged,
Pivotal Tracker/Jira stories will not be attended to.
Stand-up meetings will be ditched.
Winter is here. -
Been on winter holiday for 3 days. Went to log in to my work laptop to clear out email - took me 20 minutes to remember my domain password.
Getting old sucks, kids.1 -
!Rant; Week40
Honestly, before starting my post secondary education in Computer science I had wanted to become an architect.
Since I was maybe.... 10 years old all the way till the semester before graduating from highschool I was sold on becoming an architect.
I love design; Interior design, art, unique use of colors, architecture. I love systems that looked good and worked as well as they appeared.
Over the winter break of my grade 12 year a friend said to me, "Why don't you become a UI/UX developer? You love technology, software and design, why not go into a career where you practice on all three?".
I was surprised to hear that. It had honestly never really occurred to me since I had always told myself I would become an architect.
I guess that leaves me to where I am now. Still a student, but loving my time learning the details behind software development. I do not regret choosing Development over becoming an Architect.2 -
I hate apples. I buy them at the grocery store. They taste bland, they don't have any smell and by eating them I don't get any positive emotions.
Well, at least this is the conclusion in my head every autumn after a year of eating store bought apples.
Then the end of autumn comes/winter begins and I visit my grandparents, who live in a village. I get a bag of apples (15-20 kgs) and this bag smells wonderful. Heck, the car smells wonderful for a few days after transporting the bag back home.
My grandparents give around 7-8 varieties of apple, mixed. Each and every one of them tastes amazing, even if I have to cut some spots out from a few. They don't always look perfect, but I think these are the noble ones and the store bought would be the peasants.
I know, it's kind of obvious, that the homegrown fruits are better, but it still amazes my tastebuds every year, plus I'm really grateful for having my grandparents.7 -
After my winter examination session I am going to start the biggest Android project in my life. If I promote it properly, you will hear about me in the future 😏2

Blizzard coming this weekend. I get to spend the night at work because our disaster recovery plan isn’t in full swing (Yes it’s paid, but I am going to lose my mind). Awesome. Suck my ass, winter.2

TLDR;
When governments started printing money to cure new pandemic and crash current market with great inflation I took all my savings, got a loan and bought biggest property I could afford. Every major news station was talking about end of world, but this was not I was scared of. I was scared of the helicopter money that would wipe my 5 years old savings.
When I was about to sign loan papers to buy my first apartment I got an email that my contract will end in 3 months. I said ok, the contractor company will find me something else.
I asked and they assured me they will do it. After my contract end just before summer holidays there was silence from contracting company and then after 5 years of me earning them piles of money, after finished project and congratulations from customer they offered me most shitty job they had where people resign after a week. I said I don’t want to land in another shit hole bring it back to life for another 2-5 years and kill myself when they offer me same shit afterwards so I resigned.
It was so fucked up that even the boss from the client I was contracting asked me if I lost my job cause I finished all that they wanted. I said it’s not your fault man. I will be ok, but I wasn’t.
I had apartment I couldn’t move in cause I needed to renovate. Loan I needed to pay. Rented apartment, accountant and business that was loosing money cause I was without contract, the world was locked down and everyone was depressed.
I said ok, I still have some savings left so I I started looking for something new but market was dead. Everyone was gone for holidays after winter lockdown. I was burning money and trying to figure out what to do.
After 2 months of nothing, when I started thinking about finding some temporary job to not loose everything I worked for, things moved. I started attending hiring meetings and solving tests everyday, also from big four gang but I didn’t passed trough hr due to how they say I’m to independent and I need to look for consulting business or do something on my own.
People asked why I don’t do something on my own and I politely answered that I want to work there.
I was about to run out of money when I got a call that company is looking for me cause I was doing similar things they want to do. During interviews it was pleasant small talk about what id did over those years and what they want to do, 2 days later I joined small team. I barely managed to survive a month for a first paycheck.
Since then we created new product for a company. Now the person who hired me is leaving and I think I should also leave the ship and find other things to do.2 -
Anybody here at Google by chance? going to be applying for the Winter 2017 software engineering internship 😊 tips would be appreciated! :)2

(Saturday morning)
Me: I've never been so long without exercising (since before this, my first winter), I should get in shape now that this God forsaken weather is finally reaching livable levels.
(some time later at the gym)
Also me: You've always been in good shape, why stop with just chest, let's do some arms and shoulders.
(48 hours later, Monday morning)
I had to turn my whole torso to look if any car was coming while walking to the library, moved like terminator because of the massive neck muscle pain, suffered through the pain of setting up all my study material to the realize (just now) I can't even fucking look down to my notebook... Can I be more stupid?undefined i'd rather be hungover all bodies are beautiful therapist or massage therapist? can i eat that with a straw? hasta la vista baby -

Hey, I need ideas. Keywords: DIY, IT cabinet, cooling. I hope I'll catch your eye :)
So I'm doing my apartment renovation. Complete renovation, 100% everything is remade. Soviets did a lot wrongs but one thing they did I like - storage compartments below ceiling (like double ceiling.. does it have a name in English? I often see them in garages). So I tore down the old compartment and created a bigger new one. I've moved some of my IT devices up there: router, switch, raspberry, etc. Now... it's okay while it's autumn-winter, it's bearable up there. I'm worried temperatures might get very high during summer.
Compartment is not that big, smth 1m x 2 m x 0.5 m.
Any ideas for cooling? I could set up a vent fan to circulate air but it's hardly a cooling. Also not very effective. A/C is not an option as the compartment is too far away from outter walls. Also A/C might be somewhat overkill :) 5 minutes ago I've remembered I had an in-car portable fridge-like thing that could keep drinks decently cooled during summer. I'm wondering whether it would work? Any ideas where could I get this cooling mechanism (what to even google for? :) )?
Is there anything better in the market? DIY? I'm not willing to spend a fortune for this idea (one more reason A/C is an overkill)2 -
There.s this thing where you can donate pc capacity to do medical simulations on protiens. It helps to understand deseases.
Its called "folding at home"
They now running studies on corona.
So today i started up my old mining rig again (6x rx480's) and set it up to run in the corner of the room. It acts as heater and since winter is starting here i decided well why not heat up my room while someone else use those gpu'sto study corona..
Well turns out mining rigs are still noisy! So much for that idea.
Well i will have to move it or no sleep for me5 -

It's not a good start for today. I'm sipping my breakfast coffee at my house at 10:13. I just couldn't drag my ass out of bed this morning. I turn off all my alarms and just stayed under the blanket. Winter is my enemy.
Hope I will work with good focus later when I get to office. -

I am a good person. I can even say I am a good programmer. I have worked hard to get where I am and that shows perseverance. Although, where I am right now is not what I expected, I am somewhere. I can do something. I have good intentions.
Someday, I will build software which will be used by millions of people around the interwebs. And they will love me, for I will have made their lives better....in some way. Some will even consider paying me for it. Not because the well placed and non intrusive donate button I put there, but out of pure adoration and bare necessity to preserve someone as brilliant and precious as me. I shall be the definition of success. But I long for neither adoration nor wealth, for I am humble or at least that is how I will be perceived.
Like flies to the honey my success will attract big evil corporations to acquire my business. And I shall spit on their wretched face....at first. I would like to be wooed. Such display of integrity shall inspire generations of programmers. Let ye be inspired. There will be those who envy my achievements and they will be mocked and shunned by my true believers. But being the kind soul that I am, I will bring back my minions, for it could a PR nightmare.
All these events will take place in a not too distant future. Sure, I am going through a dark time now, it will pass. 'tis nothing but me transitioning from a lame ass PHP coder moth to this totally badass software engineer who is also a cool bro. This eclipse of my brain shall pass. My neurons will fire in all directions like photons from the sun during late winter, for it may overheat and we definitely don't want that.
I pray to the gods of engineering to grant my wishes. Trust me guys, you will be thanking yourselves when donate my money to charities that will help me set up. But that's another scheme. Amen.4 -

My current state of mood:
Too many dumb fucktards trying to be clever.
It's everywhere. Even when I close my fucking work apps and just want to have a fucking break, some dumbtards of friends remind me of the insanity outside.
I always laughed about the paranoid people who built bunkers somewhere in nowhere for very obscure and most of the time lunatic reasons.
Now I'm envious.
Winter Depression is also setting in and sleep wasn't good in the last weeks, too.
It's funny how one can be furiously annoyed and pissed 24/7 and at the same time be totally tired.
3 weeks sitting alone over Christmas and new year since paying out vacation and overtime is not possible.
Bleeeeeh.
Don't expect me round for the following weeks, think my mood will get even worse.6 -

after few months of working in the company, I was offered to trade off my weekends in exchange for increase of salary. I said hell no, I would go crazy.
winter holidays we had removed... thankfully for money increase.
all next holidays were often just removed... without money increase.
next week is going to be official week of holidays. all in our country are going to have paid days off / vacation. It was declared by our president. 2 days of holidays were extended to 5 due to COVID break.
I wonder, how hard it would be for us to get those days as vacation %
we would have to ask for VACATION days in OFFICIAL HOLIDAY DAYS!. Hell, we had never had real vacation yet, and we are just wishing to have official holiday days remaining being holidays.
Urgh. I understand that I get pretty good salary for my first work, but still wishing quite a lot for holidays, should I press for it? *sigh*
on another hand I don't really want salary decrease, which can come if I would press for it *sad face*.7 -
Hey everyone! This is a long one so get comfy~
TLDR; I'm glad to be back in the presence of all you awesome people. 2019 was a dream and I have a lot of you to thank for that.
If you've noticed, I've been away for a while. I took a sabbatical from a lot of my socials (including github - or at least public github :( this summer. Let me explain:
In late April/early May, I applied and got an internship at RBC (a big bank company in Canada) found out I'm getting flown out to San Fran for a talk I gave at a summit, and got accepted to this 2 week physics [Quantum Cryptography] camp @ UWaterloo. So I had quiet the summer. In order to throw myself into work and friends and all that, I decided that I was going to take a break. Although I took a break from Github I was still active on Github Enterprise for my job but outside of that I didn't do much.
Don't worry though, now that it's fall/winter season, I'll be in my room for way too long so it's back to the usual grind. Currently, I'm in the process of planning a hackathon, prepping for picoCTF 2019, filling out University applications, all while dealing with school :) I've got a lot of projects/things coming up so ya'll will hear more from me :D4 -

This was in 1st semester and our CSE course went under some major course revision. Python was to be taught in place of C. Now the professor we had was very famous and we were excited to be in his class. But little did we knew he had no knowledge of Python at all. He used to tell the lab assistant to teach. It was so bad that I lost all interest in programming!!
But we all studied python later in our winter holidays for further courses.
Next semester we had OOP and this is what happened:
1st lab:
Professor(different): I expect you have basic knowledge in programming so I have uploaded.
Every question was related to structures in C.
In the same semester, we had data structures where we were 'expected' to know C or C++.
Later we came to know that Python was not going to be of any use in any course ! First semester went into dustbin.

How about this..
So a few months ago there's this guy
He coughed.
He did nothing else.
He did not cover his mouth.
He did not even do it in his elbow.
He just did it.
He did it at a fish market in china..
...
And now today as the world is grinding to a hault I just hope he is satisfied.
ARE YOU HAPPY NOW??!
So anyway trapped at home. Nothing to do. Its cold today. Got to reduce the fan speeds on that rigs and bump the power a bit. There not so cold now :)
Ok on a serious note that coughing idiot is to blame for this cold.
One ICE AGE coming up. Global warming fans hold on to your chai. This one is a shocker..
So it turns out shutting down the world have caused CO2 levels to drop as cars dont drive and factories dont work and all the powerplants suddenly find people no longer want more power.
Thing is plantd are addaptive and they enlage the pores on the underside of thier leaves depending on the CO2 levels.
So the plants been running at 100% eat CO2 for a while now.
Then CO2 supply drop to lowest in 100 years.
Plants still eating CO2 at 100% so they did not get memmo yet. CO2 now getting used up faster than being made. Greenhouse no more.
Polar ice caps nows your turn.
First up south pole winter is coming your way.
It will freeze ice cap bigger than past 100 years. The ice will sit there making earth lobsided with all the ice on one end and none on the other .
Lobsided earth is a spinning ball
Lobsided balls change how they spin
The rotation of earh now affected by a cough.
In 6-8 months winter goes north.
CO2 all but eaten up by then. World still rather dead as the afternath is felt.
Northen poler cap freeze all the way to london again. First time in 5000 years.
All because of a bloody cough.
Its the end of the world as we know it and here i am waiting for unreal to complie just like usual..
So remember dont cough near others if someone cough near you then tel them to
Far cough24 -

Many of you commented on my previous rant regarding my first ever freelance gig that I would definitely be back with even more to rant... here I am.
What was supposedly a 1 to 1.5 month long project became one that is stretching beyond 3, if lucky, else 4 months long. Requirements and scope evolving more complex and with variations more intense than pokemon evolutions.
I fucked up. I signed a contract that nobody would have. I didn't plan or protect my ass enough to prevent such shit from happening. I severely underestimated and hence under quoted. This is one of the nightmare situations a freelancer could be in (in my opinion). I mean it could only get better... Right? I'm preparing myself for one hell of a payment at the end of the project. Brace yourself, payment is hopefully coming as fast as the number of seasons it took for winter to come in GoT.
On the bright side, I'm currently working on a new project with a client that is indeed much much better than this first. I mean he is a nice person and communications thus far has been nothing short of great.
I guess it's good to start with your expectations rock bottom, that way nothing else can be worse, I hope. -
Guys I'm very bad at staying focused on one thing.
For a bit, I've been learning web development, and I've been working on a page for myself. Past few days I haven't really done anything because I'm trying to actually fucking graduate high school and as of right now I am NOT graduating.
But today I was taking my calculus final and I ended up talking to the teacher for a bit. He said he has an older tablet that he's trying to turn into a type of wall mounted home automation system. I believe he said something about using essentially a minimal Linux install to do it.
That really got me thinking, because I had a fairly similar idea a while ago (not exactly home automation, but just using an old tablet as a small Linux device), but never put in any actual effort to get it done. Now with winter break coming up for me, I really want to try and work on it some.
So before I start doing a fuckton of research on this, has anyone here ever done something similar to an Android device? I'm not talking about using that Linux Deploy app or a chroot. I'm talking about basically removing the Android environment, taking it down to a base Linux install. I just want to know if anyone can steer me in the right direction to save me some time3 -

So the winter break is over and im supposed to be in my uni but no! It is flu time!
Since a human is a machine, and we have certain tools to fix it when it misbehaves lets try to debug that problem! I will tell you a story how
it ended.
Both of my parents return from a trip, dad is horribly sick (windpipe infection) so i isolate myself in my room, put on a mask when i have to be near him and wash my hands 3 times i leave my room.
Nope that didnt fucking work, the next day i get flu symptoms(high temp, fatigue, musle and joint pain)
Nothing too bad i can live with it, so i took paracetamol and called it a day.
But im still pissed at my dad for being a fucking idiot and walking everywhere in the house coughing everywhere...
The next day (yesterday)
Took paracetamol again but this time i got a stuffed and runny nose... So i take nasal decongestants, and... they dont work at all...
Today
I wake up with stuffy and cloged nose again. Aparently those nasal drugs i have been taking only make your nose less runny by drying it up, making it 10000x more difficult to unclog your nose...
like wtf? So if you have a runny and stuffed nose you have to choose which one is better?! Nah i take nasal drugs again and clean my nose with saline water, so far so good!
Also paracetamol started working weaker and weaker... What the hell is wrong with me? Im trying to solve 1 problem and my body finds another one! Curing a human is like coding a app, it will go to shit sooner or later.12 -
Now that Summer is over and Winter has come... I am now going over all the videos I took to make me feel better in Winter...
Alas... I now see 1 reason why I need an iPhone....
The camera is better...

The colors are sort of dull and lighting is uneven/not optimal....4 -
Why do companies pile on the work in the Summer and have less in the Winter? I want to do shit in the Summer. Let's bust balls in the Winter when it's too damn cold to do anything!1

Anyone else around here apply for the Google winter 2017 internship? Does anyone know how long they take to respond? I'm excited and anxious! :) Been studying hard to get this internship!

Third (or fourth) AI winter coming in despite global warming. Cold war level shit cyber warfare.
C/C++ not dead, Java zombie still in the businesses.
Still no usable IDE (on Linux)5 -
I currently don't work over 40 hours a week. When I come to work, everyone else is setup in the "war room," however my monitor and laptop are still at my desk (it's quieter with everyone out in the war room).
I have a good work/life balance, and I'm not alone. One of the other employees also refuses to work over 40 hours or on weekends. He has a PhD and teaches classes on the side. We both did at least participate in a Sunday all-day work session to get something to production.
What I'm worried about is resentment. I have taken zero vacation and was going to bank all my time, then in January take it all at once. I was going to ask for 3 weeks of unpaid on top of that so I could get a month and a half off to go south for the winter.
Even though my output has been really good while I've been working, I have a fear of resentment from others who do put in the extra time. We're all salary and none of them get paid overtime except for a one-time bonus for that Sunday I mentioned.3 -
Need some advice. I'm 19, working on my own fintech startup. Should I apply to Ycombinator or finish high school first? The prototype is basically ready, but the Winter 2018 YC is taking place while I have school. What should I do?8

This is gonna be a long post, and inevitably DR will mutilate my line breaks, so bear with me.
Also I cut out a bunch because the length was overlimit, so I'll post the second half later.
I'm annoyed because it appears the current stablediffusion trend has thrown the baby out with the bath water. I'll explain that in a moment.
As you all know I like to make extraordinary claims with little proof, sometimes
for shits and giggles, and sometimes because I'm just delusional apparently.
One of my legit 'claims to fame' is, on the theoretical level, I predicted
most of the developments in AI over the last 10+ years, down to key insights.
I've never had the math background for it, but I understood the ideas I
was working with at a conceptual level. Part of this flowed from powering
through literal (god I hate that word) hundreds of research papers a year, because I'm an obsessive like that. And I had to power through them, because
a lot of the technical low-level details were beyond my reach, but architecturally
I started to see a lot of patterns, and begin to grasp the general thrust
of where research and development *needed* to go.
In any case, I'm looking at stablediffusion and what occurs to me is that we've almost entirely thrown out GANs. As some or most of you may know, a GAN is
where networks compete, one to generate outputs that look real, another
to discern which is real, and by the process of competition, improve the ability
to generate a convincing fake, and to discern one. Imagine a self-sharpening knife and you get the idea.
Well, when we went to the diffusion method, upscaling noise (essentially a form of controlled pareidolia using autoencoders over seq2seq models) we threw out
GANs.
We also threw out online learning. The models only grow on the backend.
This doesn't help anyone but those corporations that have massive funding
to create and train models. They get to decide how the models 'think', what their
biases are, and what topics or subjects they cover. This is no good long run,
but thats more of an ideological argument. Thats not the real problem.
The problem is they've once again gimped the research, chosen a suboptimal
trap for the direction of development.
What interested me early on in the lottery ticket theory was the implications.
The lottery ticket theory says that, part of the reason *some* RANDOM initializations of a network train/predict better than others, is essentially
down to a small pool of subgraphs that happened, by pure luck, to chance on
initialization that just so happened to be the right 'lottery numbers' as it were, for training quickly.
The first implication of this, is that the bigger a network therefore, the greater the chance of these lucky subgraphs occurring. Whether the density grows
faster than the density of the 'unlucky' or average subgraphs, is another matter.
From this though, they realized what they could do was search out these subgraphs, and prune many of the worst or average performing neighbor graphs, without meaningful loss in model performance. Essentially they could *shrink down* things like chatGPT and BERT.
The second implication was more sublte and overlooked, and still is.
The existence of lucky subnetworks might suggest nothing additional--In which case the implication is that *any* subnet could *technically*, by transfer learning, be 'lucky' and train fast or be particularly good for some unknown task.
INSTEAD however, what has happened is we haven't really seen that. What this means is actually pretty startling. It has two possible implications, either of which will have significant outcomes on the research sooner or later:
1. there is an 'island' of network size, beyond what we've currently achieved,
where networks that are currently state of the3 art at some things, rapidly converge to state-of-the-art *generalists* in nearly *all* task, regardless of input. What this would look like at first, is a gradual drop off in gains of the current approach, characterized as a potential new "ai winter", or a "limit to the current approach", which wouldn't actually be the limit, but a saddle point in its utility across domains and its intelligence (for some measure and definition of 'intelligence').4 -
Brain of a normal person is like an SUV — versatile, robust, occasionally kinda fast, needs minimal maintenance.
Brain of a bipolar person is like a supercar — needs a lot of maintenance, can't go off-road, can only drive on a perfect track without destroying itself, only takes special, expensive kind of fuel, can't drive in the winter.
Yes, you boubas can perform better when I'm depressed. But when I'm manic, your skill and your experience don't matter. I'm gonna tear you apart. I'm not gonna take your job — I'll take your bosses and will replace you with a script I wrote in 20 minutes. I'll again spend three hours and take Product of the Day. I'll again take the CTO job without even applying.
Mania is like taking quad damage AND god mode.
But in two weeks, I'll be depressed again. sleeping for 13 hours and not able to work.
Too bad mania is temporary, but achievements are forever. Good luck1 -

I've got so much overdue winter break work that I have to skip celebrating New Year to do math and finish my biology sketches.
Argh.
Hope you guys have a better 2018. Happy New Year, I guess?1 -
I'm looking for a hobby project during winter as I can not drive my motorbike during that time. Anyone has a good idea?
Maybe I could start with my old business plan idea, but I would for sure need people to help me.6 -
Who found out the hard way he is now very intolerant to OTC allergy meds? Me.
Who also terribly suffers from seasonal allergy? Yep. Me.
It's going to be a long summer, coding with migraines, sinusitis, and irritated eyes 😞4 -
I gained 10kg from eating shitting and writing code.
Time to move on or I will die with head in my keyboard.
I was planning to buy a water rover so I don’t have to get out from home during winter but well I don’t know. The gym is across the road and to get a decent water rover I need to spend 3 years of gym. I can’t decide if gym is better than exercise at home. You have greater accessibility to the training device at home.
What you think ?
Should I buy a water rover or go to gym ?6 -
So, since winter is growing closer here and the temperatures started dropping, I once again began to bring a hot tea thermos with me at my University.
Whenever I get bored and lose focus, I usually pour a cup and drink, trying to relax and regain my lost concentration.
I also fail miserably and turn to my phone when inevitably the tea runs out :/ -
Winter is coming :/
8 hours days, you get up and it’s dark, sun is shining when you’re working and when you finish work it’s dark again.
Moreover I have lots of work so I usually only work, eat, sleep, repeat.
I downloaded 10 movies to watch during my working hours, so I don’t get paranoid to much and see some fake people on tv. Well fml, looks like I was born to work till death, might be first karoshi in my country. Found in bed with laptop, opened intellij and terminal, finger on enter button and in the terminal ./deploy.sh pending for new release. Hope everything will clear before new year and I can manage to clear my todo list. It’s last time I’m saying it’s last time I take so much work instead of sorting out my personal life. Well we’ll see…2 -
It's winter and it's quiet. Too quiet. My shitty job has me sitting here, waiting for work to appear. I could be at home working on something dev related and fun and meaningful to the progress of my life but no, I have to be here and I have to "look" productive for the bosses. I hate this shit, it's like prison, except I get paid, so I should be thankful. I can remote into my PC at home but I already got snapped for that, now I'm paranoid and afraid to try use this shitty downtime in a productive way.
Well, guess I better go sweep the already swept floors again to maintain the illusion of "work" for my penny dripping masters.
QQ having nothing to do is worse than too much to do.1 -
My stupid body sweats when it's cold and doesn't when it's hot. I sleep in a long oversize sweatshirt. But during the day, it's the opposite, except for my fucking feet, this is why during the summer I wear t-shirt and stuff but with heavy winter socks.
Can you suggest a patch for that?3 -
Dev goals for 2022? Best and worst DX in the past?
Wish to prioritize customers with useful business goals who are open to sustainable web dev, usability and accessibility.
Want to use even more CSS and find a way to use new features like parent selectors without sacrificing compatibility.
Continue learning and using Symfony, but also continue with my full-stack side project using JS or even better TypeScript for the backend also for the backend.
Best developer experience: getting new customers for my own business after leaving a company last winter.
Worst developer experiences:
Corporate customers with large budgets and design agencies seem to fancy all the antipatterns I thought bad and obsolete, like carousel content, animations everywhere, and autoplay videos on the home page. Poorly written, poorly thought, and sometimes contradictory, requirements. Customers and agencies changing their mind halfway through a project.
"Agile" daily meetings, not giving devops necessary repository permissions, and making Webpack mandatory for no real reason.2 -
Yocto is the most overly complicated shit on earth! How the fuck did i ever get my board to boot? You get so easily lost in layers and bb and bbappend and there are like 20 flavours of assignement operators and to configure the kernel you need to run one command for menuconfig and then another right after to pull a diff out of the .config into your project. otherwise noone else will have your changes. TrY the same thing with the bootloader and the whole thing shits its pants. Also there are like four devicetree that are required for boot. And if you specially fuck up here, your hardware will be an expensive paperweight. Also there are like featuresets that enable shizz like wayland or ethernet but good luck finding out what in the actual genderbent jesus the thing you just configured does. And there is like no way to visualize any of it as its just a cockblock of text and files. Also if you use search the results are most likely useless. As the thing you are looking for is a filename and vscode does a text search only. Also you can add layers but whatever the fuck that means as a bsp is like a layer but so can also be a kernel patch or some rando variable change. And good luck fugurig out to which dir $PWD points to. As it could just be on the Elon Musk nazi base on the dark side of the moon. Also every folder starts with meta for some dumb reason. And if it starts compiling you could just aswell build a coffin and go into winter hibernation. It takes fucking forever. I have a 3800x and the build takes 1.5h. Why? Because, BECAUSE, B E C A USE! There is a require package called optee. Which need a python package. That package depends on a crypto lib thats written in rust. And since its all from source, it downloads the FUCKING rust compiler source and compiles the compiler to compile a lib that only takes like 5 seconds to compile. Also good luck figuring that out without constantly staring at the compile log. As there is some compilation time info but you need to write a parser for that first as there is no included anal -lyzing tool for it. I could keep on yappin' waaay longer about why dantes inferno is kindergarten compared to yocto, but i dont have enough alcohol in the house to fuel that.1

Now that winter has really kicked in, my hands refuse to warm up in the morning and I'm typing like some sort of end user or something. 🌨😣🌨7

@dfox can we have sweaters instead of shirts for the winter?

There was one more plane in WTC attacks that struck a skyscraper in Newark. It didn't collapse all the way, but instead collapsed halfway while tilting sideways. It stood like this with power still on when Kim Dotcom bought it. He named it The Darthmaker. Because it was winter, he made it an extreme snowboarding course.
Many people perished there, losing their balance and falling into the rebar pit. Also, still working Commodore terminals were littered around, with their tape data storage cabinets transformed into washing machines that washed corpses.
Experiencing The Darthmaker made most of its visitors insane. This is why in 2006 it was leveled for good. A dilapidated yellow Commodore chiclet keyboard from one of the terminals is still on display in the museum in the United Paper Island.2 -
Ardour keeps telling me my hard drive isn't fast enough for playback. I'm using a Thinkpad t420 with an SSD, so the only reason I can think that my hard drive wouldn't be fast enough is if swap is slowing it down. I wanted to record music over winter break but I couldn't because of that issue. Music in Linux is frustrating. I will say that antergos made the process of installing jack, guitarix, rakarrack, and ardour a breeze though, so that's something.4

It's a beautiful day outside. I wish it were raining. We're forced to work Sunday and I already hate it.
There are 52 Sundays in a year, and 1/3 of them are covered in snow, ice and brutal winter. I don't want to be here today. I want to be outside.
Almost everyone in this room has a partner or kids or someone to go home to. I get to go home alone. I hate it here. I can't even look at my manager any more. I hate him. I will never do this again. No amount of money gets you a Sunday back.2 -
It's the end Mid winter recess you what that means. Sitting at home and working on all of the those websites you've been procrastinating!

I used to love coding. I have ASD and it was one of those rare things I could just do for hours without realising the time. I used to do my own projects, or at least plan them.
Now it's my job to code (& design when I don't have a pleb project, software engineer). I still kinda like to code but as I *have to* code, I just hate it.
Every fun thing that turns to work just turns to torture. Maybe I'll break my arm slipping this winter and have to have an extended sick leave...3 -
I am a graduate student having a hard time finding an internship. I wasn't ready while the big companies were hiring for interns. 200 leetcode questions later I am confident I can crack an interview and now nobody wants to hire.
Most of the reject letters are pretty messed up stating that they have "found more talented individual" or "found a better candidate".
Applied to almost 200 companies, not one reply. :( Hope this doesn't happen during full-time job search.
I was rotting in my room practicing for the interviews and applying for the last two months during this winter break. Hope I don't sit idle during my summer break. :(4 -

With all the CES nonsense, wouldn't you love it if they didn't make shit smaller and thinner and actually made it the same size as 5 yrs ago. While upgrading battery life and cooling... I see all these new laptops and small form factor pc's and I just think "well there is something to keep me warm in the winter". Priorities people2

Depends on which desk we're talking about...
Office desk: an empty can, a tophat well as a demo and some Russian paracetamol I found from a pocket of my winter coat.
Home Office #1 desk: the keyboard for another computer, a plant, a bunch of magazines and newspapers belonging to someone else, a roll of kitchen paper, someone else's meds, a cup of cookies, another cup of small tomatoes, a Swiss army knife, a bike computer and a tablet.
Home Office #2 desk: wife's laptop, a bunch of chargers for a myriad of devices, a Kindle, some envelopes full of stickers, others with bills, a lot of random crap, and usually when I'm at the desk, one or two purring felines -
It looks like Microsoft are back to their old tricks, specifically the DirectX 9 naming scheme. Naming releases after Northern Hemisphere seasons and repeating words never gets old and/or confusing!
Who's looking forward the "Winter (2018) Creator's Update"?5 -

Fuck, I hate moving. All the tearing down and subsequent assembly takes sooo bloody long. And you have to be extra careful not to destroy all your (no so) cheap IKEA furniture when taking off the screws and nails. ~Lê stupid me didn't think he'd have to disassemble this stuff, so I actually used nails. D'oh. So now I have some splintered wood. Congrats, you cockwomble. Good luck repairing that.
I'll use screws (torx head, of course) when reassembling though, not making the same mistake again.
Oh, and then there's all the dust and cobwebs and fucking spiders living under the furniture, because I can't tilt my wardrobe to vacuum underneath it. Just. Fucking. Lovely.
On the upside, I get to do an early spring cleaning on all my accumulated trash. New apartment is gonna be so clean and minimal, you'd mistake it for a monastic meditation room. With a pair of monitors and my beautiful desktop to the side. Meditation is lovely, but I also pray to the silicon and transistor gods. Need mah tech shrine.2 -
In the winter I move my desk in front of a heating unit, rest my feet on it and put a huge bowl of cereal by my side. Sometimes I fall asleep, but when I don't, I have my best ideas in this position.

School restarts tomorrow and i'm already so wired I'm not gonna be able to sleep until like 11PM or worse. Plus, it's been 3 weeks since they let out for winter break, so...
Kill me now.1 -
As the winter months approach I've been thinking about freelancing. I decided to setup a website( jQuery!) with my games( unity, unreal all that shizzle). However what are some tips on getting out there with the website? Should I AdSense? Or should I go and advertise on Reddit( post on subreddits). Or contact peeps directly asking if they need my services( how do I know who 🤔). Or am I missing something?
Please tell me in the comments below -
Websites that use a snow effect in Winter, with many little snowflakes moving on screen, needlessly drain the battery of mobile devices. Since batteries in portable electronics are usually not replaceable as of 2022, it also shortens the overall useful life of mobile devices.
If web designers feel the need to appear creative, which the snowflake effect isn't since it apparently existed since the 2000s, they should at least give users an option to turn it off. And that option should be available without logging in. Perhaps this useless effect should be turned off by default for mobile users.6 -
Another day, another struggle with time zones.
How many fucking helper methods do I need to create for dates and time zones? How many components, pipes and services do I need to wrap just so two datetimes line up? Apparently another one today. At this point I'm ready to accept flat earth theory if it means no more time zones. I'm fucking sold on it if so.
It's not even the time zone that's the issue. It's business needing it formatted, but also offset properly, based on your browser locale, but with points that cross into DST observing time zones of a different locale simultaneously. Sometimes those times are the same, sometimes they're different, sometimes they're different but only in winter. And despite a plethora of libraries to help with these calculations, nothing ever seems to just work out of the box. So here's to another layer of abstraction, because time zones (and DST) are bullshit.1 -

On a chilly winter night, I discovered the heartbreaking fact that my $52,000 USD bitcoin investment had disappeared. As I struggled to comprehend that my hard-earned money was gone, panic and frustration took over. I had placed my faith in the erratic realm of cryptocurrencies, only to have it collapse. I looked to the internet for a remedy since I was desperate for assistance. At that point, I discovered SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL, a business that specializes in recovering cryptocurrency funds that have been lost. At first, I wasn't sure if they could actually assist me, but their website's evaluations and testimonies gave me hope. I communicated with SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL, outlining my predicament and the sum of money I had lost. They told me that they could assist and, to my relief, reacted quickly. I was first dubious, but at this point, I had nothing to lose. To find the missing bitcoins and apprehend the thieves, the SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL team put in countless hours over the course of the following few weeks. They tracked the digital trail the criminals left behind using state-of-the-art technology and their knowledge of cryptocurrencies. As the days went by, I sensed a spark of optimism starting to grow within of me. I received frequent reports and progress updates from the SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL team, which kept me informed at every stage. Their commitment and professionalism were very impressive. After what seemed like a lifetime, SPARTAN TECH GROUP RETRIEVAL finally gave me the news I had been waiting for: my lost bitcoins had been successfully recovered. It was unbelievable to me. My eyes filled with tears of relief and thankfulness as I expressed my sincere gratitude to the staff for their diligence and hard work. Why Replace Your Windows?
There are several reasons why homeowners in Columbus choose to replace their windows:

Ohio experiences a range of temperatures throughout the year. Energy-efficient windows help maintain indoor comfort by reducing heat loss in winter and keeping cool air inside during summer. Look for ENERGY STAR-rated windows for optimal efficiency.
2. Enhance Curb Appeal
New windows can drastically improve your home's exterior appearance. With various styles, materials, and finishes available, you can customize the look to match your aesthetic preferences.

Older windows with weak locks and outdated materials can be a security risk. Newer models offer advanced locking mechanisms and shatter-resistant glass for added protection.

When choosing replacement windows, consider the various styles available:
Double-Hung Windows – A popular choice with two sashes that move up and down, allowing for better ventilation.
Casement Windows – Hinged on one side and open outward, offering excellent airflow and an unobstructed view.
Sliding Windows – Move horizontally along a track, perfect for contemporary homes.
Bay & Bow Windows – Extend outward, adding space and natural light.
Picture Windows – Fixed and designed to provide a clear, expansive view.
Choosing the Right Window Material
Vinyl Windows – Affordable, durable, and low-maintenance.
Wood Windows – Classic and aesthetically pleasing but require regular upkeep.
Fiberglass Windows – Highly durable and energy-efficient.
Aluminum Windows – Strong and lightweight but less insulating than other materials.
Finding the Best Window Replacement Company in Columbus, Ohio
To ensure quality installation and customer satisfaction, consider the following when choosing a window replacement company:
Reputation & Reviews – Check online reviews and ratings on platforms like Google and Yelp.
Experience & Certifications – Look for companies with certifications from leading manufacturers or the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC).
Warranty & Guarantees – Choose a provider that offers warranties on both materials and labor.
Free Estimates – Get quotes from multiple companies to compare pricing and services.

BEST HACKER TO RECOVER LOST OR SCAMMED BTC AND USDT= VISIT SALVAGE ASSET RECOVERY
The winter wind howled outside, rattling my windows as I sat frozen in front of my computer, staring in disbelief. My heart sank as I refreshed the screen, only to be met with a chilling zero balance where my $50,000 Bitcoin investment had once thrived. A cold sweat broke out on my forehead as panic set in. Surely, this had to be a glitch, right? But as I delved deeper, the horrifying reality emerged that I had been hacked. For three agonizing nights, I plunged into a dark abyss of online forums, desperately seeking answers. Most options felt like dead ends, either filled with vague promises or outright scams. Just when I was about to lose hope, I stumbled upon Salvage Asset Recovery. Their presentation and detailed case studies stood out amidst a sea of questionable "crypto recovery experts" who seemed to offer nothing but empty assurances. What caught my attention was their straightforward approach. Unlike others who dazzled with grandiose claims, their team asked pointed questions about my security setup and the timeline of the theft. Michael, their lead investigator, explained their forensic process in layman’s terms, avoiding the technical jargon that often obscures understanding. This honest communication immediately fostered a sense of trust, which was crucial during such a distressing time. The investigation unfolded like a gripping cybercrime thriller. Their team meticulously traced my stolen funds through a complex web of wallet addresses across various blockchains. They uncovered that the hacker had employed a sophisticated service to launder the coins, but Salvage Asset Recovery’s proprietary tracking methods cut through the obfuscation like a hot knife through butter. It was astonishing to witness their expertise in action, as they navigated the intricate landscape of cryptocurrency transactions. After 20 excruciating days, I received the email that would change everything: "We've successfully frozen the assets at an exchange in Estonia." The relief washed over me like a tidal wave, and I sank to my knees in gratitude. Within 72 hours, my Bitcoin was back in my possession, with only a reasonable fee deducted for their services. To anyone facing the same despair I once felt: there is hope. Salvage Asset Recovery are not just technicians; they are digital detectives who blend technology with relentless investigative spirit. They restored not only my funds but also my faith in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, proving that even in the darkest moments, there are heroes ready to help. their contact info

The ground trembled like a nervous intern on espresso shots. One minute, I was monitoring my geothermal Bitcoin miners, humming in harmony with Iceland's most unpredictable volcano. Next? An eruption painted the sky gray with ash, raining destruction like an out-of-control blockchain fork. Power cables flickered out. Servers turned into abstract-art pieces. And my wallet with $460,000 worth of mining revenue fried faster than a motherboard in a tidal wave of lava. I was knee-deep in volcanic mud, clutching the charred wallet, wondering if the universe had a vendetta against renewable energy. For weeks, I’d played geothermal gambler, harnessing Earth’s anger to mine crypto. Now, Mother Nature had countered with a literal power move. My wallet’s backups? Corrupted by ash-clogged drives. My cold storage? Warmer than a freshly erupted fissure. Even the volcanologists on my team shrugged. “We predict lava, not ledger errors,” one said, handing me a business card signed at the edges. “Try these Cyber Constable Intelligence. They’ve fixed crypto in weird places.” Cyber Constable Intelligence phoned on the first ring. Cyber Constable Intelligence saved not just crypto. They demonstrated that even the fury of nature cannot surpass human tenacity. My operation now operates robustly, excavating coins with Earth's anger and a backup generator sufficient to run a small glacier. The volcano? Still grumbling. My wallet? Locked inside a fireproof safe, as irony bites sharper than an Icelandic winter.
If your crypto somehow gets smothered beneath the pyroclastic ash of life, skip the freak-out. Call the Cybers. They'll dig through lava streams until your cash bubbles up to the surface. Just maybe set up your rigs a few miles closer to the crater next time. If you’re facing a similar problem I highly recommend contacting Cyber Constable Intelligence

I think this model discounts the idea of "representations regressing to the world as ground truth" or the "world as its own best model" in research related to embodied intelligence. I just think researchers tend to overlook state-free approaches because everything is DNN now.
I can't pretend to understand everything they're talking about, and AI winter may be coming eventually, but its still well worth the read simply because of the approach they take merging neurobiology with ideas from computational intelligence.1 -
STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED : CONSULT RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY

The winter wind howled outside, rattling my windows as I sat frozen in front of my computer, staring in disbelief. My heart sank as I refreshed the screen, only to be met with a chilling zero balance where my $50,000 Bitcoin investment had once thrived. A cold sweat broke out on my forehead as panic set in. Surely, this had to be a glitch, right? But as I delved deeper, the horrifying reality emerged I had been hacked. For three agonizing nights, I plunged into a dark abyss of online forums, desperately seeking answers. Most options felt like dead ends, either filled with vague promises or outright scams. Just when I was about to lose hope, I stumbled upon RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY. They uncovered that the hacker had employed a sophisticated service to launder the coins, but RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY’s proprietary tracking methods cut through the obfuscation like a hot knife through butter. RAPID DIGITAL RECOVERY are not just technicians; they are digital detectives who blend technology with relentless investigative spirit. They restored not only my funds but also my faith in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, proving that even in the darkest moments, there are heroes ready to help.2
