Sales guy (s) : how many hours do you think this project will take?
Developer (d) : well I guess about 250 hours
(one week later)
S: I finally sold that project
D: nice! When do we start?
S: you'll start next week and it needs to be done one month later
D: 40 hours a week, times 4 weeks for one month is roughly 160 hours
S: yes
D: but I said I needed 250 hours
S: yeah but they didn't accept that so I sold it for less
...
(and no the scope didn't adjust to the new time frame)14 -
This is the expected Binary ++ post from me :P
So, today I go to devRant and see 1's and 0's as my ++'s. I assume it might be a bug, but nope. Turns out it's one of the neat ways of meeting April Fools :)
Thanks to whoever had the idea. It genuinely made me smile.6 -
School principal : P / Me : M / Interviewer over Skype : S
P. I recently heard you run a software club in our school.
M. Yes. (started from March)
P. Well, one software community seems that he found you somewhere, and asked me if we can do a quick interview.
M. Sure. What is it?
P. So he will connect to skype.
M. Let's start then...
*A few moments later...*
M. Wwwwhhhhaaaaattttttt?
P. Calm down! What's the problem?
M. How can I have more than 5 years of android development?
S. Ok. Recorded. Next question.
M. (uhhh)
*A few moments later...*
M. What? Why in the heck do I use subversion?........
Yes... Ah... Ummm....
No! Why should i make a gui client for subversion?
*A few moments later...*
S. Do you have hacking experience?
M. Of what? I know hacking is illegal here..
S. Like... Anything!
M. Do YOU have an experience?
S. Yup.
M. What?
S. Google.
M. How?
S. (silence) Ok. Let's move on.
M. (wtf is this guy)
*A few moments later...*
S. Okay. We were about to hire you but you didnt met our job requirements.
M. ......What? What was the job?
S. Web developer Intern
M. I got no questions regarding "web".
S. I know devs should be great at all things.
M. Shut the hell up. What company are you?
S. (says something)
M. (Searches in google) Doesnt come in search results.
S. Where did you searched it? (trembling voice)
M. (Searches in naver, search engine of korea) Nothing. Are you sure you are a company?
S. (ends call)
Hate these fake interviews. And i have no idea how they found my school
I never wrote my school anywhere.12 -

Spectrum Dev: Hmmm.. what should I use for an error code...
Another Dev: The hell should I know.. what's your favorite letter?6 -
I see a trend here.
Posts of people with good number of ++’s get more ++’s than the posts of people with less number of ++’s. Even if the post of person with good number of ++’ is just a normal conversation starter and post of person with less number of ++’s is an actual good fucking rant.
It’s not a bad thing, per se. I hope nobody gets offended. All in good spirit.
To people with good number of ++’s:
Let’s not hold back and ++ the good content of people with less number of ++’s.
To people with less number of ++’s:
Don’t hold back your thoughts. Be free. Write free. Don’t try to make your rant to look a certain way to get more ++’s. We are all here to support.
Let’s grow together and spread positivity.
Peace.18 -
For the love of God, we don't care that you're failing to get 15 ++'s to get your sticker. Obviously, if it didn't get a measly 15, then your rant wasn't that relatable/funny/likeable. Ranting about ++'s isn't going to get your crap rants any more ++'s5

Bloody hell I have been stuck for two hours on a problem and couldn't find any solutions. So naturally I asked my Senior for help. I was trying to export a js file like :
---------config.js--------
module.export = function (app){
//code here
}
-----------Index.js------------
var config = require('./config.js')
config(app)
but it would throw an error saying config is not a function. Wasted two hours only for my senior to point out that I missed an "s" in module.export 😑
Feels so stupid. bloody ass.6 -

I am currently in a bit of a (well-deserved) lull at work, both of my projects are finishing up/ finished, so tomorrow should be pretty light, as the latter half of today was.
And I have really gotten interested in the HTTP protocol. It's so interesting learning how it all works under the hood.
So I think I'm going to be researching/ messing around with creating a cpp project that essentially implements cURL from the ground up, creating sockets, reading from them, parsing the HTTP requests... all that. I don't expect to actually get it done, but it should be an immense learning experience. I have a clear goal: implement this function:
std::string get(const std::string&);
Once I'm able to just GET as simple as that, I know I have achieved my goal!3 -

I'd love it if the number of ++ s a rant has, to only be shown after you either ++ the rant or open it. thing is, I found my self scrolling through my algo feed and looking at the ++ count before the post itself. I was judging the post by the number of ++s it has. which made me realize that I skipped a couple of posts that I didn't read and that I could've liked.
what do you guys think about this?12 -
I really appreciate the idea of unlocking items for avatars with a raising amount of ++s!
It's an awesomely elegant way to motivate devs without pushing them and keep them in the regular user base of devrant.

I discovered a language I didn't know AND i like.
It's not under active development anymore, but I decide it has a nice syntax. It's made by the writer of craftinginterpreters. There are still people writing some extensions for it.
I decided to implement socket support in it.
That went very well and the result is just BEAUTIFUL. But now, i have a collection of socket functions that require a file descriptor (sock) for every function like write, read and close. We're not living in the 90's. I want to do sock.send(), sock.write() and sock.close(). So socket as an object.
I wrote a wrapper and it is freaking TWO times slower! Hows that even possible.
I've made wrapping to object optional now. Bit disappointing.
The language shows off with benchmarks on their page. Their fibers can even be faster than Elixr. Yeah, if you only use the fiber and nothing else from language. I benchmarked string concat for example against python: 1000 times slower or so.
The source code of wren is so freaking beautiful. Before Lua was my favorite language regarding source. The extensibility is so great that I prefer to work on this one instead of my own language. They kinda made exactly what I wanted. I can't beat that.
For if you're interested: https://wren.io/
The slot way of communicating between host language (C) and child language (wren) seems odd at beginning but i became fan of it.
Thanks for listening to my ted talk.
What's your opinion about wren (syntax)?25 -
I get it. Functional code is still kind of considered the "new hotness" in languages like Java, but THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU NEED TO CRAM IT IN EVERYWHERE FOR THE SAKE OF IT. If in doubt, *please* go for the simpler, classic option...
Just inherited a code base that's full of things like this:
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(true)).ifPresent(s -> callService());
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(false)).ifPresent(s -> logError());4 -
Inherited a codebase that implements its own word wrapping for receipt printing. Problem is it's putting an extra space at the end of each line.
I open up the implementation, expecting it to be a relatively simple fix, until I see this…
var regex = '.{1,' +width+ '}(\\s|$)' + (cut ? '|.{' +width+ '}|.+$' : '|\\S+?(\\s|$)');
return str.match(RegExp(regex, 'g')).join(linebreak);undefined looks like i'm writing a word wrap readability shmeadability regex look ma only two lines!7 -

It's been weeks now since I looked through a language, called S-SIZE, filetype .ssz) that is so little used around (I think it's only used is for a game engine clone called Ikemen) that I can't find much documentation or talk about it on Google.
I'm kinda surprised actually. Is it kind of a common thing to see languages used for a single application?2 -

@dfox love your work. Have an enhancement request for IOS app badge counter: tapping on notification symbol in top right corner to view +1's should be the action to clear the badge counter for +1's, not the action of tapping on individual +1's (there's nothing to read when tapping on them)7

Not a rant but..
What was the most terrible experience you have had while working with groupmate(s)/co-worker(s) on a project?3 -
WHAT IS WRONG?
public class Person {
String name;
public Person (String personName) {
name = personName;
}
public String greet (String yourName ) {
return String.format ("Hi %s, my name is %s" + name+yourName);
}
}3 -
Why we don't write dereference operator while priting string(format specifiers is %s).
For example: char arr[5]={"char"};
printf("%s",arr);//print char.
If we write like printf("%s",*arr);//compile time error.1 -
Last week:
Me: ++'s a rant. "Hey! That person was spot on!
Forgot about it.
This week:
Me: ++'s same rant. "Damn, this person is on fire!" Noticed that the number of ++'s dropped by one.
You guessed it. Same rant.
Should really stop smoking weed and reading deviant during work hours...1
