Ladies and Gentlemen,
I present you the API I'm working with...
That's a pretty fucking useful error description right there.20 -
People who send an email saying "I'm getting an error message".
WHERE DID YOU GET IT?!
WHAT IS THE FUCKING ERROR MESSAGE?!
OH NO SURE LET ME LOOK IN MY CRYSTAL BALL, I'LL HAVE IT FIGURED OUT FOR YOU IN NO FUCKING TIME.
😡20 -
So this fucking happened today.
Me: *sees support ticket coming in about some kind of login issue*
Me: *opens issue*
"Hello, I can't seem to login. There's an error"
Me: *sighs and thinks "at least give me that FUCKING error message then." *kindly replies with asking if they could send me the error message*
"Here it is. I don't understand what is going wrong
and what I have to do"
Me: *looks at error message*
"Invalid customer ID. Please make sure that your ID is correct. You can find it in the activation email we sent you when you registered".
😐 😶 😦
Me: *thinking okay what the fuck, are you fucking retarded or something?*
Me: *kindly replies: "It seems that you are not using the correct customer ID. You might want to look for it in the activation email we sent you!"*
"Oh okay thanks, how did you figure that out?"
Me: 😵 😐 😶 😭 🔫
Seriously what the actual fucking fuck.27 -
A friend of mine was playing Destiny 2 just now and the game crashed. This was legit the error message :31
-
Client: When I hit the “Subscribe” button, it gives me an error.
Me: What’s the error message?
Client: The email field is required.
Me: Have you entered your email before hitting the “Subscribe” button.
Client: Oh, I have enter my email address?
Me: Yes
English is a very complicated language.7 -
So this happened today.
Client: hey I sent this ticket, what's the status/have you located the issue?
Me: well, it says it quite obviously in the error message...? (i actually said that, toned down afterwards a little)
Client: where's the error message then?
Me: 5th line....? It's literally there in plain english?
Client: ok so what does it mean?
Me:..............? "marked as spam by the receiving server"?!
Client: yeah ok but what does that mean?
😐
Thing to keep in mind: they're a web dev/email solutions company.
😐😩9 -
Me: We should change the http response code to anything but 200 OK in the error response case of our API.
Other dev: No, it's fine.
Me: Why?
Other dev: The client successfully receives an error message.
Me: ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻15 -
My girlfriend sent me this error message from a BIM software which she uses at work. I would like to see more sophisticated error messages from a software with a 4K price tag.6
-
"My think isn't working!"
"Let me see."
*starts program, error message appears, clicks X*
"What was that?"
"Don't know, appears every time, I never read it."7 -
Today we got the following (approximately, don't remember it literally) error message on a windows server:
Please turn on your computer. Updates can't be installed while your system is turned off.
Genuinely; de WUT?!10 -
RE: Why I punched Dave
In my defense to the accusation against me punching back end developer dave in the face, look at the following response:
HTTP 1.1
status: 200
mesaage: OK
body: {
"success": "false",
"message": "error"
}11 -
Not mine but an error message in a game when you're trying to logout:
"You're currently not logged in. Please log in to log out."
Logically valid though1 -
Just sharing the best error message I ever got. Sometimes the application is just as confused as you are...9
-
Finally got a 200 response back from the server! Woo!
I've spent two days trying to get this to work (see my earlier rant). but yay! finally working!
So I log the response body just to revel in its lovely glow.... only to notice an error message saying "INVALID_INPUT".
WHAT THE CRAP.
200 FOR AN ERROR RESPONSE?
COME ON.4 -
Me: *Gets an error message I don't recognize.* fuck.
Me: *Googles error*
*First result is not StackOverflow but a github issue instead* oh FUCK!6 -
Windows tells me to „contact the network administrator“.
I yell at the machine: „I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR!!!1!“
Why is Microsoft doing this? Instead of telling me what exactly went wrong, the come up with messages like
“Something happened”
“This is not possible”
“Error 0x2342133723”
“Do you want to ask a Friend?”
I really hope the authors of those error messages will burn in hell for that!10 -
Not sure what hapend... On my laptop running Ubuntu 17.10, I just got a notification:
Problem occured: "Ubuntu is ready"
Not sure what to do now... :P8 -
That moment when you finally solve your problem and you can close your browser with 20+ tabs of searches for your error message. Feels damn good.2
-
Best error message I've found during my dev years.
"Error: An error has occurred!"
You don't say! :))8 -
9pm Project Manager: We have to push an update TONIGHT
9.45pm Devs: okay guys, all latest bugs are fixed, just needs final check and we can push the update
10:45pm Devs: Guys?...
11:45pm Guy in charge of testing: Uh doesn't work...
- What doesn't work?
- I dunno, I get an error message
- What's the (fucking) error message?!
Aaaaand silence
Fuck this I'm going to bed.6 -
It would be really FUCKING great if NodeJS or mysql could give me a FUCKING shout or ERROR MESSAGE when one of the parameters I'm giving is not the RIGHT FUCKING DATA TYPE INSTEAD OF THROWING A RANDOM ERROR THAT DOESN'T INDICATE A WRONG MOTHERFUCKING DATA TYPE. Five FUCKING hours of debugging later.16
-
Time spent creating an error response...
Implementing the response: 5%
Choosing the error message: 95%1 -
Girlfriend was making science homework while suddenly this appeared. Real helpful. What a great developer must that be.4
-
My output of 5 hours of work: changing a 'b' to a 'B'.
5 hours working out what the stupid cryptic error message means and reading documentation, 5 minutes to change and test the difference.3 -
Client: "I have a problem."
Me: "No problem, can you say me the error message? "
Client: "No I have clicked the message Away... "
Me: 😣🤐5 -
People on github opening issues saying shit like "aye, your extension crashes. Please fix or I'll uninstall. Thanks.". How am I supposed to fix an error I know nothing about? Error message? Extension list? Stack trace? Steps to reproduce? Nope. Nothing.
Don't be like this, please.5 -
Tester - The app has a bug when I try to buy a ticket
Me - okay, what's the bug ?
Tester - it shows an error
Me (trying to not high-five him with a chair in the face) - What's the error message?
Tester - ah nvm it works now!!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Explain the issue you dimwit, don't just say it doesn't fucking work!2 -
QA: When I open the app I get this strange error message that includes "No data connection could be established" near the start of it.
Me: I'll clean up how thats displayed, but the error means your phone doesn't have internet connection.
QA: No that can't be it, I do.
Me: You screenshot shows no WiFi or 3g / 4g symbols.
QA: No those are never there, please investigate.
Me: I have investigated and found that every other one of your screenshots had a WiFi or a 3g symbol. Example: <link>. Please check your connection and try again, i'll clean up the error display.
PM: Oh i've had an issue something like this before. We really need to show users an error screen. We can't just leave them on this screen with no error message at all.
Me: ... we have an error, thats what QA is complaining about, its not loading the text and displaying the error object.
Anyone else want to not pay attention and complain about something else that doesn't make sense? ... no? ... ok good, back to work then7 -
What's your funniest error message while testing your code ?
For me : Fatal error - Parachute deployed.
0_o8 -
Customer.... I keep getting this error code
Me.... Deletes message box
Customer.... Wow you fixed that quick
Me.... That's why you pay us. -
When you've been working on a problem for hours and realize you just got super excited because you got DIFFERENT error message.3
-
Spectrum Dev: Hmmm.. what should I use for an error code...
Another Dev: The hell should I know.. what's your favorite letter?6 -
Rant:
I start a phone project and get an error during debugging
I look up the error and learn that its a visual studio issue
I try uninstalling visual studio and fail
I try reinstalling visual studio and fail
I format the machine and reinstall everything
I run the project and get the exact same error
I later learn that it was not an error but a system message unrelated to the problem4 -
Worst error message management.
Can't you just display the valid pattern for an username instead of showing different error message everytime.
If plain ASCII and only letters and numbers same for them, just show only letters and numbers, and
what's that hourly limit.
I just couldn't sign up after wasting time thinking of an username.6 -
Most irritating thing I have to deal with when working on a project with a third-party:
{
status: 200,
message: "error"
}7 -
People who message “I’m getting a error” without any context or even better the actual error message, no one else can see your screen and we can’t magic a fix, and we’re not f***ing psychic, tell us what the f***ing error is. Or better yet, figure it f***ing out like the rest of us, you also have google - go nuts16
-
The most helpful error message of all time:
Unhandled exception in line 0: Script error.
Literally translates to: “Something went wrong but I’m not gonna tell you what.” -
spent an hour trying to fix an error, in the end realized there was an error in the error message #facepalm1
-
Thanks Django for this very elaborate error message. It's not like I spent the last 3 hours trying to debug it or anything.12
-
The line numbers in error messages look like I’m time traveling.
.... line 1987
.... line 1883
.... line 1642
.... line 20072 -
Developer confession.
I always git push a new branch even though I know it will error as there's no upstream, just to copy the full git push with set upstream arguments from the error message.11 -
"Lightweight rant"
Good job, devs of Sparkasse.
Time to "jobn't" y'all.
That error message is very informational.
I know it is because of the time counter being at 0 and I need to relogin to reset it, but what if I was a regular dumb client? To add more salt into it, what if I was someone in his 90s.
Do your fucking job properly.
Edit: The error message translates to "Error", "Error" and "Close"4 -
*it’s friday and everything works*
> Commit
> Run my project on monday morning
> Feature doesn’t work
> No clear error message
> Everything’s gone to shit
> Nobody knows how to fix it
> 🙂🔫5 -
Can anyone tell me what the hell happened here? GData is supposed to be good antivirus software, right? Been using it for years and suddenly it throws this error message on my mother's computer... WHY IS IT UPSIDE-DOWN???9
-
Boss: I have a demo NOW, but there os an error message on that page.
Me: okay, give me sometime to elaborate the problem..
Boss: No No please, this is urgent
Me: Okay..
My code:5 -
So today a senior sent me an error message asking why https://servername/service:80 isn't working... 🤬9
-
Client gets an error message. Proceeds to write the error message on a piece of paper, scans the paper in as PDF and attaches the document to an email to tech support.1
-
I just started to use
"titties" for success message
and
"no titties" for error message
... I need friends... and titties obviously4 -
MySQL has the absolute worst error messages.
"You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds blah blah near '(some random code line)'".
How vague can you be? It doesn't help that I always find the error in a completely different place to where the message says it is.5 -
Someone: How was your day?
Me: When your Net is soo slow that the error message shown for it loads slower. -
I’m sick of these kinds of error messages. “Could not be downloaded at this time.” Ok...but why? Are the stars out of alignment? Did the CEO of the company decide that every other Tuesday at noon, you can’t download this app?
How hard is it to give a reason in the error message??3 -
User: Your web app hasn't been working all day.
Me: Uh ok...this is the first I heard of it. Whats the problem? Are you getting an error message with any details? Can you send a screenshot so I can look into it?
User: Yeah it was an error message.
...
🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃6 -
OutfofMemoryError thrown while trying to throw OutfofMemoryError; no stack trace available.
What the.... ????

When it's 5AM, you had zero sleep and your deadline is in 3 hours: Oh loard my saviour php, please - PLEASE just let my peace of shit code work for once. *reloads page*
Error message appears. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCK!3 -
error message of the day: "InvalidArgumentError: Expected dimension in the range [0, 0) but got 0"
......well, thanks google.4 -
Great error message. Now I know EXACTLY what to do in order to fix it. Thank you all over the place, Microsoft.3
-
I realized why do i like java the most. Error messages are easy to read and consistent. Never really had to look up an error because the message tells you exactly what is wrong. Hell, you could write a script to self-repair the errors because they are so obvious to fix.
Now compare that to my current stack, python and js....8 -
tar -zvcf folder just gave me the error message:
"tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive"2 -
Tell me the classics you never get tired of. I'll start.
User message / report: "there is an error". With absolutely nothing else written or attached.17 -
There’s a special place in hell for fuckwits who create tickets and don’t include the fucking error message.8
-
when the IBMQuantumExperience python package just returns "400: GENERIC ERROR"
come on, how the fuck am I supposed to debug that?8 -
"An error has occurred. Please try again."
WELL WHAT THE FUCK IS THE ERROR? WHY CANT YOU TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO TO FIX THE ERROR YOU PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT.
I shouldn't need to submit a form 23 fucking times, changing field values each time, because of an uninformative fucking error message.3 -
Worst part of being a dev? Ever got an error message without a corresponding stack overflow question/awnser?1
-
ERROR MESSAGE:
<I am written in plain english>
<Here is the line number of the error>
<Here is the possible reason for the error>
Developer: What the heck is wrong with my code now. (looking at source)
ERROR MESSAGE:
<You incompetent piece of s**t, READ ME. F'n READ ME. Please READ ME. I promise, I be helpful.>
<Nope. You aren't gonna. Fine!> -
Just saw on Zuckerbook.
Moral : Put a screaming message for such idiots on support sites to fucking read the error. It's all written there.5 -
I'm getting annoyed with the increasing number of platforms that implement the "Oops, something went wrong" vague error message.9
-
Me setting up Webpack for a project
Error: can't resolve ./src
Guess what? ./src exists. So I go searching for an answer, and it turns out webpack looks for ./src/index.js and if it can't find it then it throws an error.
But the error message is: can't resolve ./src
The issue was reported ages ago but webpack devs never improved the error message
THIS IS WHY WEBPACK SUCKS 💩
Yes it might seem like a little detail but it just makes it all the more obvious that Webpack sucks right from the start when you set up a project the error message is stupid and unspecific3 -
I was programming a basic neural network in Python and was getting the same error message again. Then after 2 hours of frustration I realized that I was using Python 2.7 instead of 3.61
-
Error message on Facebook :)
When you let the developers write all the error messages by themselves.
Personally I always ask for help when it comes to writing nice error messages.2 -
What's a bigger sin.
Returning a status code of 200 and then the message body saying "An Error Occurred"
or
Only performing data validation on the frontend.18 -
when a client sends an error message as a dual-screen screenshot and the actual message is unreadable because of JPEG compression
-
Well thank you WhatsApp web for this useful error. I just want to hear that audiomessage, that should not be so difficult that you forget your own fucking message. Damn you WhatsApp!7
-
Dear JavaScript,
"TypeError: Object(...)(...) is undefined" is not a helpful error message.
Sincerely,
Me11 -
Took me an hour to figure out what was wrong, those quotes aren't part of the error message... :'(4
-
UX quiz:
a) trim whitespace characters from credit card or bank account input
b) refuse transaction, show error message: "no spaces are allowed in the card number"13 -
I'm implementing some Italian web servicies.
The server response is "INDISPONIBILITÀ TEMPORANEA" (temporarily not available).
I'm Italian, but I'm not used with localized error messages. When I read this message I tought to a server in a toilet.4 -
Me and my colleague where debugging an issue with a 3rd party provider we are integrating with, we received this error result:
Making the request failed (dunno why)
The award of best error message goes to those fellas T_T3 -
Emailing about a stray error message with a service. He asked me to send a screenshot of the error. So I do.
In the tabs bar, it's clearly written "how to print screen on linux" JESUS FUCKING CHRIST kill me1 -
Oh my, our frontend (FE) dev is amazing! He never ceases surprising me :D
[FTR: I'm building backend (BE).]
Here's a message at Trello I found today:
-----------
Hey @netikras
responseBody e --> Whoops! Lost connection to http://test.application.com/chat/...**************
Do you return this error to FE as a string when FE loses connection to BE?
-----------
I mean.. come on buddy :D Use that gray mass of yours2 -
YEEEEEESS! FINALLY!!!!
After 4 days trying to find why my build script was showing an error! I finally fixed it!
I still doesn't work, but, hey, it's not the same error message!2 -
Not only Windows can show this "strange" error messages: Today I got this beauty while importing an SQL-dump.
(Translation: "Error on import: error on statement #1: not an error. Execution will be aborted and the db will be reset.") -
this fucking senior dev, just send the following messages:
pull development,
Did yarn install
now yarn dev does not work.....
BRO: READ THE FUCKING ERROR MESSAGE!
It's plain English!
Seriously wtf.2 -
If an http request can't perform the requested operation, should server send 500 error code? Or 200 with status and status message in response?
Isn't 500 used only for unhandled exceptions on server side?11 -
Fucking give me an error message instead of telling me {error: "You can find more details on developer.incompetent-shits.com", success: false}2
-
What happens if i rant a rant that everyone knows?
"A different error message! Finally some progress!" -
I just remembered a weird fix in a bug, some old developer hide the error message using css, placing it in a div then just used display none. LOL4
-
Okay, let's get this fight rolling: here's a typical .net error message:
An error occurred. (An error occurred.) The type of this error was: An error occurred. Additionally, an error occurred while the error was occurring. The type of this error was: An error occurred.
Additional information: NullReferenceException at line... haha not really fucko, an error occurred.2 -
Worst error message to show a new user...
"An account with that email and password already exist. Please try again or login to your account." 😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀3 -
"There is nothing to dismiss!" - modal error message after clicking "dismiss all notifications" button over an empty notification list.4
-
I had once an sql error that took me two days to resolve it.
The error message was a syntax error but I was using an ORM to write my queries (doctrine with php) .I didn't have too much to debug as the code was pretty simple and clear so I got to the point that I convinced myself that this a bug and I'm gonna try to mess around it to avoid it.
Second day late night, something popped up in my mind '' hey what about those reserved words? Could it be the reason? '' aaaaand BINGO the key '' option '' is a fucking reserved word for mysql.
Tip : always check that list before writing your data models (specially if you're a noob like me)1 -
Sometimes I think "I should write a meaningful error message for this exception" and then i remember how useless 99% of the error messages of every compiler / interpreter I've ever had to use and decide "msg ='something went wrong'" is good enough.3
-
I really couldn't help but laugh when I found this gem of an error message. I mean, I'd literally know just as much if it served me a blank page.
If you can't describe your own god damned error message without calling it 'generic', IT IS NOT A GOOD ERROR MESSAGE!
I'm glad they informed me it's an application error though. HERE I WAS THINKING MY TOASTER WAS THE PROBLEM.2 -
"This application has stopped working. Oops, something went wrong." Proprietary software, no error message, only option is to accept your fate or submit a report to your system overlords
-
Despite the "blue screen" name, Windows fatal error screens sometimes can be also displayed with other background colours; in Windows 9x, the colour of the message could be even customised by the user.1
-
Error mesage on my 4GB ram "smart" phone, running a "smart" application.
'Oh no ! Something went wrong. Re-try'
Whatttttttt!!!
WHY DOES A "SMART" APPLICATION GIVE SUCH A STUPID ERROR MESSAGE.
IT IS MY PHONE, PLEASE PROVIDE A HELPFUL ERROR MESSAGE, WHY IS IT SO HARD.
I JUST HATE SOFTWARE THAT TREATS THE END USERS AS STUPID ANIMALS.9 -
Architect: I've been using this architecture for 20 years now and this works nice since pascal, that's why we are using it in this J2EE app.
This was the justification that I received after hearing that I shouldn't use exceptions, just make the function return a false and add the error message to a embedded message list and make the caller capture it.6 -
WTF PEOPLE!!
Some people really need to read their error messages.
Just now I got this teammate asking me how he should handle the error git returned. The error message stated: "Please commit your changes or stash them before you merge." He asked me what he should do to fix the error... I was astonished by his stupidity that he did not read the fucking error message.
Almost every fucking time a teammate comes to me with the question how to fix an error, there is a message that says how to fix the error. Why don't they read them?!?! I told you so many times to read your fucking error messages!!!
I'm really glad the project is over in a couple of weeks and I get a new team..2 -
When you live in a third-world country, you don't get an error message. You get a written apology with a spelling error. So thoughtful at 1 AM. -.-1
-
I’ve been debugging all day. I finally nailed it down to the final error message but then when I fix it ALL THR OTHERS CAME BACK LIKE ON SOME NECROMANCY BULLSHIT.
-
This is a gripe about modern UX interfaces. UX interfaces need to have better ways to get information displayed in text as text. It is exceedingly annoying to be presented with an error message in a dialog with a cryptic error code. The user is forced to transcribe the error message to try and figure out what is causing the error. Just make the text copy-able with normal cut and paste interfaces. I think this should be a standard in interfaces that present text to make it easy to copy the message or text from interfaces. This makes information sharing easier and less cumbersome to the user. This is definitely a mindset change for UX. This is mostly a gripe about desktop. Phone systems are just shit to begin with.6
-
This is outrageous and satisfying at the same time.
Error message meant for a developer and why the fuck the stackexchange app does not work on Google signin2 -
So you're getting an error message that says "incorrect credentials"? Read the fucking message and check the spelling of your fucking email address.2
-
When you see a monitor with this error message on it:
Alert: Keyboard not found.
Press F12 to continue.
😂1 -
SAP Ariba.
Imagine you can test newly created catalogs, but on error you only receive an error ID, which you have to send to a support email to get the acual error message, but support only responds after maybe 2 weeks if you're lucky.
How hard can it be to implement a log viewer next to your catalog testing forms. -
Why is it so hard to remember, that devs need an error message if they should help you. just saying "it does not work" is not helping.
I even wrote you a checklist. so f*ing use it! I'm not there to be called every time just to tell you to do something that's already on this list.
Every. F**ing. Time.2 -
Why do people continue to ask me why I'm not just sending any - ANY - error/exception message in full length to the user.
Am I going nuts? You can't tell me that this is a good idea right?10 -
AWS is so secure that even with full access I cannot access the resource I need and the error message is so cryptic every hacker will give up first. Amazing!3
-
What is with IT and their obsession with error messages?
"If there is no error message, I cannot help"
Your not going to get an error message because the problem is VPN is messing up my DNS due to tunneling. There is no error other than me not having Internet if VPN disconnects unless I reboot.2 -
The intern beside me just called me to solve an error in PHP.
He wrote:
for($slides as $s){
}
The PHP error message wasn't quite clear:
Fatal error: expected ';' on line 84
How could possibly an intern who's becoming an engineer in IT make such mistake and lose like 1h on an error like that? I even attends one of the best universities in the country
PS:
I know engineers aren't supposed to code, but he's been coding for the past month in PHP and was here just to do that16 -
How can anyone justify the cofefing craploaded bullshitish error messages of bloddy java?
Who, in the name of the flying spaghetti monster came up with that brain damaged bitwaste?
Sorry if i offended brain damaged people with that comparison4 -
Boss: I don't want centralized error logging
Me: But we have 50+ client sites running the same web app, why the fuck wouldn't we?
Boss: What if the database is offline, then we wouldn't be able to log exceptions
Me: *beats head against desk*1 -
The fucking worst part of my job is when I get thrown an error on a bug I'm trying to fix and it doesn't even contain an error message. For example, I'll try to verify a self signed certificate but I get an error and literally the only error thrown is [Error 0], no fucking message. If you try to track down the error in the docs they don't even fucking list errors. Times like these make me wish I could castrate people with my1

> be upgrading angular project to rc5 for last 2 days
** wild first non-fuck-you error message appears! **

Customer complains about an issue after a software update. The head of department himself tested the update and got an error message.
Me looking at the logs. Ok, that's an issue, but based on hardware failure, customer should fix his hardware, no relation to the new software.
But surprisingly close to the software update, which piques my curiosity.
Me looking at older logs ... same issue. EVERY FUCKING DAY. For months. The corresponding error message only appears if a user is logged on, so quite a few people have seen it. Obviously nobody cared. Maybe we just ditch error messages, it'll save lots of work. -
What could make a programmers day worse?
Trying to find a bug, WITHOUT AN ERROR MESSAGE!
fuck QlikView. -
Fuck you Firefox and your shitty debugger.
Why do you try to be so different, to the point where you make the error messages obscure?
Google the error message I get in the Chrome debugger - hundreds of results.
Google the error message I get in the Firefox debugger - I can count the results with my fingers.
Just use the same error messages god damn it.
P.S: Also, why is there no fucking option to open an image in a new tab, like in Chrome?1 -
Ouuu today I experienced how web-devs must feel...
Task: create a form to answer questions with yes/no and a database behind it to collect stats.
So login to phpmyadmin
1. Wrong password got error message
2. No error message, still at login screen, but in address I see a token
3. There must be something wrong
4. Reinstalled phpmyadmin and mysql-server several times, wasted one hour on it - still stuck at login screen
5. Tried different browser and it fucking works!
6. Realized that cleaning cache fixed it...1 -
Day 3, still stuck with the same weird error message, Im using Ionic and I think I'll switch to React Native...3
-
"Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"
This error message pisses me off. I know the SSIS Script component is capable of catching exceptions, you can wrap all your code in a try/catch (please don't) and get an exception. So would it be so hard that if the Script Component throws an exception that it tells me what it is instead of sending me on a goddamn scavenger hunt?
The whole bullshit system of errors is why I hate SSIS. Just tell me what went wrong.
I did what I wasn't supposed to do, wrapped it in a try catch and it gave me a stack trace and an error message and all sorts of actionable shit. But why the hell can't it just do that on its own?
There is literally nothing worse, except maybe Hitler, than a goddamn vague error message.4 -
I read the other day here about people not reading the error messages shown by the IDE and thought "there can't be people this dumb..."
Well, today I was helping a friend out with his java project and he was trying to figure out an error for at least 10 min so I told him, read the error message, he goes like nah, that won't help, I kept repeating it till he did it and guess what? The explanation was there and helped him figure out the problem.
His excuse? He didn't have the patience to read the message, it was 2 lines long...
How can you be so stupid to the point where your first thought isn't checking out the damn message the IDE gives you? It's there for a fucking reason.1 -
I am not a PHP dev but this back end error message when accessing /notif looks weird.
Is this a security bug?7 -
Teacher's story:
Once a friend of mine had a problem with is program but it would only happen from time to time, so he didn't get bothered with it.
So, because I'm an evil person, I did a print in his program with the error message.
After a day debugging, he found the error. He really wanted to kill me. -
IT in the social sector. For some, it is absolutely new that reading error messages and trying to follow them actually helps.
Some are absolutely amazed that the error message says exactly what you should do.
I can't count how often I said "read the message" and got an "oh, okay then..." back.1 -
"hey, can you please help me out with this, it isn't working"
"What's it say?"
"I dunno, It's giving (not throwing) some exception/error" (no clear distinction between them)
Well, shit. Did NOT expect Java to do that in case of some undesirable flow in code! Stack trace, error message, what was happening when the exception (or actual error) occurred as inferred from logs... Nope.
Great! -
Really fucking nice android studio. Your auto generated code makes my builds fail and your error message don't even care enough to show me in which direction I should go fuck myself.4

Open software:
Error message: Failed to load x..
Why not tell:
Error message: Failed to load x. Please reinstall software.
or
Error message: Failed to load x. Remove cache folder located in "drive/somewhere" and try again.
or
Error message: Failed to load x. Please recreate x by using tool y and try again.
if software tells you no meaningful message and you have NO idea how to solve it.. it is one of those annoying things you have to deal with.
Why can't I just create features....4 -
when your script doesnt work like intended.... it only exits with error code 0 and i get a message everything is ok... dam it6

Did anyone else just now read these two rants by @pixeltherapy and @d3vv as one and try to read the error message as a limerick?1

Me: *pastes error message into search engine* && *clicks first result*

Same here, anybody know how to fix it?
Help me
This has been irritating me for the past 2 minutes, somebody please help
Me: *replies "same" on a two year old thread*
Fuck you.5 -
You are stuck in a PM meeting, and all you can think of is that error message from the last stack trace.1

Get on devRant while compiling / waiting for results. Much time later I'm wondering how long that error message has been on my screen staring at me... and then I need to get my focus back into the code :(1

Has anyone used Azure Machine Learning Studio? It can be so amusing. A friend's script wouldn't run once because of an error she encountered.
The error message read "No Error". -
Mount an azure file share in an app service container? Sounds handy. Nice clicky-draggy wizard to set it up, pick your file share, type a path to mount it to, hit save.
And does it work?
Does it buggery.
And is there a helpful error message so you can see what you've done wrong?
In a pig's arse is there a helpful fucking error message.
"Application error", and a link to some "diagnostic resources" that displays the exact same error message, including the same link, so a link to itself, in an infinite recursive loop of rank, inhuman stupidity.
Let me see what's in the logs. Absolutely fuck all. No, wait! There's the html markup for the fucking useless error message I'm looking at in the browser. So the UI is telling me to fuck off, and the logs are recording that I have been told to fuck off.
But this is Azure. So there isn't just one place to look at the logs, there are many places to look at the logs. And they are all geologically slow and most of them don't work.
It's probably a firewall issue. I'll have a look later on if I can be arsed, but frankly I'd rather be performing cunnilingus on a lion.1 -
I was updating software on Windows 10 when suddenly error dialog pops up: "Setup.exe has crashed, Windows is opening a portal to a new dimension."
Might have not be those exact words but it's pretty close. Such a shame I wasn't quick enough to printscreen. Have anyone else encountered that message?2 -
Hey guys,
At first I would like to say sorry for asking a technical question here but I am really desperate.
I have a dell xps 15 and after trying to install arch and updating grub I can't boot from any Linux USB-Stick anymore.
I tried it with Linux mint 18.2 and 18.3. (they both worked before) and when I boot from them the error 'file /boot not found' flashes up and after some time I get the following error message (image)
After a few seconds of that error message it continues booting and then crashes while booting.
I am very thankful for any help and ideas how I could fix this.6 -
I wanted some ideas on how to word an error message better, so I googled "error message best practices".
80% of the results were about form validation and not actual code breaking errors >:(
On the up-side, I now know that I must not say "No, Bad User!"3 -
Is it a bug if a user tries to do something they shouldn't be able to do and the program stops them but doesn't give an error message?1
-
Me everytime I send a message with my new keyboard:
Yeah sure.}
Me everytime I code with my new keyboard:
Syntax Error: Unexpected ")" on line 693. -
I should try to put ascii arts of pepe memes instead of meaningful error handling messages in my code, this way I would know for sure if people are actually not just patching fucking try catch silence everywhere instead of doing proper code.
I should probably do the same with documentation as well while being at it. -
StackOverflow gatekeepers: "Voting is already communicating." Maybe it is, but in such a minimal way like an error message saying "an error occurred". Sadly this is current UX as well as long as nerds are in charge. Sometimes I feel ashamed to be a developer. Are we human or robots?3

RIP windows
Once, around 15 yr ago I remembered when tried to install Window 95 on my machine, gave me interesting error message.
Error : keyboard not found, press enter to continue.
Where is the enter.... WTF4 -
Unbelievable. 14 out of 16 runs of integration tests errors unexpectedly with no error message, port was already used (not released from last cycle) or timed-out in the before all hook. Well done whoever wrote this suite!
-
i have not been able to get a single error message to show up for hours. not one console log or warning.
i’m ok.

And that feeling when you google your error message and get 3 hits, none exact, 2 of them in Chinese and one automated malware scan results.
It really makes me feel that I'm pushing the industry forward. -
Love this kind of humor, coworkers output into a log on errors begins with "Found Unidentified Critical Keyerror". Took a while before I noticed the genius message in this error! My colleague deserves a cookie!1
-
I swear! I just typed some words, I pressed [Enter] key and....
Oh my good, I broke the machine ...
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry !
PS: this message is not alone, I found another one about a deprecated function once I clicked on a link... -
Searched for an error message hoping to find StackOverflow. Found GitHub showing me the code that produced the error message instead.
I haven't had enough coffee to understand somebody else's code today. I'll keep debugging myself before I read your code, thanks. -
Just had my first instance of a user solving a program giving them an error message by just not running the program.
That is all.1 -
Wrote a script for mail merge with app script works flawless on my account, then that shit gives message blocked error with the clients account.
I think this is what they say a devlife1 -
Server Error Caused by: javax.servlet.ServletException:
Error Message: No message available with status code 500
Does this qualify as the best error message, ever? -
!rant Why is it that when you're young and don't know anything about computers you never get errors but as soon as you learn how to really use a computer everything starts showing "you broke something, good luck fixing it."
This is after getting the error message "an error occurred somewhere."1 -
So I've been reading about rest api and I purpose there should be a standardized keyword for message
like 'errorMsg', 'msg', or just 'message'
I m kind of tired of discovering new acronym for error message or message every time I write a REST service3 -
React-Native lately reloads on errors. You try to read the error message in the console, but there is no message because it reloads everything. Why do you have to take a screenshot to read the error message?5
-
JS has
dynamic object literal keys
String object literal keys
Why aren't template literal keys allowed, and _why_ isn't there a proper error message for them?7 -
gulp started throwing premature close on useref:dist yesterday
said it was on a dependency
spent whole afternoon checking gulp issues and reviewing dependencies
as it turns out, it was nothing even remotely related to the error message
it was a spread operator used to merge objects
why must the Lord test me like that -
Spend an entire day on getting an auto-update feature into my cordova app...
APK installer doesn't open, error message doesn't give me any solutions...
Error msg:

okay but there is a class in that namespace which inherits from ClassToInherit.

That moment when you save a file in atom and ie starts up with console open, a paused atom screenshot and an error message :/1

I can confirm that Crystal lang v1.0.0 is not stable really. I seem to have hit a block. For example, I get error messages like this frequently:
`Error: can't use Hash(K, V) as generic type argument yet, use a more specific type`.
I love the "yet" in this message; it gives you some hope!5 -
swagger code gen not giving a useful error message of which part is causing the error, fuck you, plus I'm working off an example of a thing that worked fine
References to other documents are not allowed -
Testing the output for an image using a screenshot of an error message and then wondering why the output shows an error :/

I really want to know the thought process behind this PMA error simply saying "Failed to import file".
It's bad enough when user-facing software hides error details to seem less threatening, but PMA is literally designed exclusively to be used by technical people, who know how to handle an error message. -
First run of an import procedure in the production environment.
Spent all morning with an "Unsupported media type" error.
Finds out that the provided password was wrong and that the Webservice always return that message when there's an error.
Any type of error... -
“My whatever isnt working“
“Was there an error message“
“Yes“
“What was it?“
“I dont know I dismissed it“

Error reporting. Yeah it is a pain to come up with something that users will understand. As devs we need meaningful stacktraces so we can diagnose the problem but the normal person doesn't care. Also not having consistent messages looks terrible for the user's experience.
I hate it when there is no standardized error messages and/or json structure between teams or individual members of said teams. Why should we have 10+ different structures to code for in our apps? There is RFC 7807 for a reason. It has a defined structure plus accounts for custom properties. If you are a c# developer, check out the ProblemDetails class. It has made my life easier and I can guarantee everyone that all of my team's projects return this structure. -
Apparently there's a limit to how many API endpoints you can deploy in a second using CDK. Thanks for not having an error message that says that and wasting two weeks.1
-
I had seen a meme the other day about the "Application has stopped working" window, which always shows the same answer for all. Why? And why does it say "We'll notify you when there's a solution" when this doesn't happen at all?1
-
...of course after carefully perusing the doco and ensuring the parameters are right the supplied conversion utility crashes with no error message .... of course it does

When you try and compile for iOS using TACO and you get an error message about an android icon file missing *wears the wtf hat*

Look at how they write docs:
"->atPath('foo')"
how can I fucking know what to pass instead of foo? I cannot make show fucking error message near the field.
Are they writing such doc so that we would spend more time searching how to make show fucking simple error message?
"The atPath() method defines the property which the validation error is associated to. Use any valid PropertyAccess syntax to define that property."
Property on my entity is collection of $values . Tried passing 'values' - no effect.2
