Me as a kid: "I'm gonna make new operating system 🤓"
Me today: "I'm gonna make hello world program 🤓"4 -
Dad: What do you think about this laptop?
*looking at specs... Raising eyes. Intel i3 first gen., 2 GB RAM*
Me: Nice calculator8 -
Few months ago I made an app for my buddy. Because it was simple soundboard app (it literally took me 15 minutes) I haven’t took any money. He said it’s for personal use only...
So he released it under his name on Google Play Store... And now he asks me to add advertisements... For free... When I asked him what can I get from it, he said “you can add your name to Credits”
That’s how you loose trust and buddies!22 -
Me: *receives SMS from ex girlfriend*
GF: "I'm horny, whatcha doing now?"
Me: "Not much, just working on the update system to this tool which will be used with mod. Can't talk right now"
This was the fastest "murdering of the mood" I ever done.11 -
Unofficial devRant Racing Team in Forza Motorsport 7 basing on Ford Falcon in Supercars series - probably most geeky racing team ever!12
-
Yo dawg, we heard you like news. So we put more news in your news, so you can news while you news.1
-
So I've started my Python adventure and made an app that lets me know what's my next lesson in school. It shows lesson, subject and time.6
-
So I got bored and decides to screw around with Windows 2000
Also it's freaking hard to draw with laptop's trackpad in Paint8 -
So I made this devRant logo for Forza Motorsport 7. It’s nothing perfect, but you can stick it to your bumber!19
-
Me: Hey Windows, I would love to use my Bluetooth headphones! Could you please turn on the Bluetooth?
Windows: Nope
Me: And why exactly?
Windows: I don’t know
Me: Then what I suppose to do?
Windows: Turn on Bluetooth
Me: Dude, but you can’t turn it on
Windows: I know
Me: So what the hell I suppose to do?
Windows: Maybe restart the computer?
Me: I’m downloading something man!
Windows: I don’t care
So I restarted it7 -
My Hackintosh project works! The GTX 1050 Ti runs, it boots without USB needed and even audio works!27

While working on some improvements to camera system I accidentally made pretty cool transition to the rooms.5

For the last 45 minutes I’ve been watching my teacher showing is how to do styles in Word

So I was looking for mod for Payday 2, when suddenly I've bumped into this video with this beautiful color scheme13
-
After 3 hours of trying to implement a feature, I’ve moved from 10 errors to 7 errors!
At least I’m doing some progress, I guess... 🤷♂️6 -
So this is one of first ever games I have ever created. I made it when I was 11 years old. Today I've deicded to remake it with nicer graphics and in Unity3D, because why the heck not?
Wish me luck!7 -
That moment when your game appears on some Formula 1 Hungarian website and your server's network transfer is gone from 10 GB left to 2 GB left in just 2 days... But still - I'm proud of myself
http://formula.hu/parc-ferme/1654910 -
So I was playing Formula 1 game and I heard “push, push, push” from the engineer while leaving pit-lane.
I immediately closed game and started “git push”3 -
My brother: “There’s no way you can remove games from my computer!”
Me: “Oh really?”
Bro: “Yes! I got password on Windows!”
He didn’t knew I had remote control setup on my PC... So I hid games on his PC6 -
So I got terminal Linux in school right now. People said that it's so hard, but guess what? Surprisingly it's even easier for me than Windows CMD!7
-
So there’s this Harry Potter book made with AI: “Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash”... I need to get it7
-
I just love when someone writes variables in Polish/German/Russian/Chinese/Esperanto/Klingon or any other language that is not an English33
-
So a few years ago when I was getting started with programming, I had this idea to create "Steam but for mods". And just think about it - 13 and a half years old me which knew C# not even for a half of a year wanted to create a fairly sizable project. I wasn't even sure how while () or foreach () loops worked back in the day.
So I've made a post on a polish F1 Challenge '99-'02 game forum about this thing. The guy reached out to me and said: "Hey, I could help you out". This is where all started.
I've got in touch with him via Gadu-Gadu (a polish equivalent of ICQ). So I've sent him the source code... Packed in .ZIP file... By Zippyshare… And just think how BAD this code was. Like for instance, to save games data which you were adding they were stored in text files. The game name was stored in one .txt file. The directory in another. The .exe file name in yet another and so on. Back then I thought that was perfectly fine! I couldn't even make the game to start via this program, because I didn't know about Working Directory).
The guy didn't reply to me anymore.
Of course back then it wasn't embarrassing to me at all, but now when I think about it... -
After over 2 months of not opening devRant, here I go again.
My dad's laptop is dying so I decided to give him my old one (because I ordered a new laptop). I asked him if should I keep Linux on it, or should I install Windows. He said "ehh, keep the Linux". So there it is! Linux Mint on top of Dell Latitude E6320 and another person converted to Linux!
Also sorry for not posting just a SS.6 -
Arch users are literally like vegans, or guys who study the law - they can’t live normally if they don’t tell you that they use it. Just because you can install it, doesn’t make you instantly a Linux god. It’s like Kali users that they think that they’re hackers if they install it, or MacBook users that think that they are “kool kids” because they have a laptop that thousands of other people have.
Nobody. Cares.10 -
1.) Make Linux slightly more popular on the desktops.
2.) Windows 11 is actually a Linux distro.
3.) Let JavaScript burn in hell17 -
That one time when it took me 3 days to fix a bug, which ended up being literally one character missing.
I was questioning my life choices for another 3 days.2 -
If we're living in simulation, then God should start releasing some updates, because world has too many bugs8
-
I made my first website at the age of 12 with my dad for building company! It's alive to this day 😀3

Never name two different variables with the ALMOST same name or It will stop your work for a hours. I named one "lang" and anothers "langs"2

Dear fanboys (and probably past and I hope not future me),
Just because I use alternative product doesn’t mean you can attack me personally. And because you use some service/product doesn’t mean it’s automatically fitting for all people or it’s perfect and doesn’t have any cons.
Just because you use X thing and you’re happy with it (which is perfectly OK), doesn’t mean I can’t be perfectly happy with Y thing.
Imagine if only legal haircut was yours favorite. Wouldn’t be that boring if everyone wore exact same haircut? That’s like some 1984 shit.
I’m not saying that criticizing things is bad - it’s great actually, but in civilized way.
Don’t attack a person using something and automatically assume that they are an idiots, but rather point out why that something is bad.
And please, be different. If you’re happy with that phone which you use, don’t go buy a new one just because someone told you that your current one is bad without pointing out why.
Sincerely,
Athlon
No one is gonna care anyways...8 -
“Get Linux, they’ve said. You don’t have to restart after the update, they’ve said”
Maybe I’m stupid, or Ubuntu Budgie sucks, but every time after tiny update, the system says I need to reboot. Just like Windows!18 -
Me: *adds one song from Sonic game to Spotify playlist*
Spotify: Here, from now on we will suggest you ALL OF THEM and ONLY THEM -
My IT teacher REQUIRES to write down our Office365 password into the notebook... It’s funny to me because I got one generated through LastPass and he doesn’t allow me to use it...11

I love how just a couple of mods can change 16 years old game into still legitimately good looking game and yet keep its original charm18

In elementary my teacher gave me bad mark, because instead of painting house in Paint, I was trying to code6

Real-time physics calculation of +250000 blocks on AMD Athlon.
No worries boys, I had fire extinguisher.4 -
Fucking surprise payment pop-ups in apps!
I've just accidentally bought an app, because it randomly showed the "buy pro version" pop up...9 -
I’ve realized that programming made me so much better at math!
Although I’ve caught myself writing “int x” once in the notebook.1 -
Vim is super easy, guys! You don't use arrows to navigate around the text, that's too obvious! Instead you use HJKL keys, because it goes Hup, Jleft, Kright and Ldown. You can also use B to go Beginning and E to go to End of the word, oh and W to go to the WstartOfNextWord.21
-
I’ve never made any of my code open source, because I’m afraid that it’s so freaking bad someone will bash me for it, but I’m really trying my best.8

Proton by Valve.
I know it’s technically a Wine but slightly modified, but the fact how stupidly simply it works is stunning to me.

YouTube’s has gotten really irritating lately with its advertising. Literally 3 ads side by side before the video title13

I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!4 -
So at this moment I'm testing my game's alpha build on Xbox One. So... Here's my PC connected to Xbox One connected to monitor and a huge pile of cables because of it7
-
Ironically, my younger brother (14 years old) is far worse in tech than my mom. Whenever I explain something to my mom, I have to tell her once and she gets it. But if it's my brother? Oh boy, sometimes you got to tell him quadruple times and he still won't get it...3

I found that meme on Reddit (r/linuxmemes) and it perfectly describes my feelings about using KDE on top of Manjaro. Sometimes finding the thing I want takes way too long. So far I think I'll be coming back to GNOME3

Apparently it's all game's fault... Again. This article is not even fake https://bbc.com/news/av/...6

Surprinsingly Linux (Elementary OS 0.4) handles Intel HD Graphics 3000 better than Windows 10. Games runs actually better on Elementary, than on Windows on my laptop!11

Random fact #1
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) was producing Intel 8080 clones (AMD Am9080) before developing own CPUs. Originally they were produced without Intel license. This clone was developed basing on pictures of Intel 8080 itself and pictures of logic diagrams. These processors were much cheaper than the original model. Later AMD and Intel came up with agreement and the Am9080 was fully licensed making AMD official second party vendor.
And yeah, few years later and we got a war between two of those giants. Remember when in mid 2000s AMD almost beat the Intel marketshare?
Bonus Fact: there is AMD logo on Ferrari Formula 1 cars since 2002 (look at the front wing)6 -
Ladies and gentlemen.
I wanna introduce you one of the best tools on the market. My latest and greatest creation.
Da Notch (TM)
Have you ever thought "Damn, I would like to have this notch like iPhone X, but on my pc"? Well lucky you! With Da Notch (TM) you can bring iPhone X notch to your Windows machine! You can even change it's width with simply left clicking on it and using your scroll wheel. Isn't that great?
Get it here! https://gitlab.com/aathlon/...8 -
So BitDefender started detecting some System32 programs as viruses. That is reg.exe, cmd.exe, conhost.exe, netstat.exe, taskkill.exe...6

If Android phone has a bug and doesn’t receive fix: nobody cares
If iPhone has a bug and Apple fixes it after 2 days: WOLOLOLOLO, APPLE SUCKS! THE END OF APPLE IS NEAR!11 -
DHL Parcel website in Poland looks like is from early 2000's. This is how it looks like on 1080p screen7

After two weeks with Ubuntu - I'm done with this. I'm going back to Windows.
Why? Well, it fixes some Windows problems, but at the same time new ones are popping and they are even bloody worse.10 -
So did CCleaner basically became an malware? I mean it even recreates autostart item if you remove it!

You know Steam? So I wanted to create something like Steam, but for mods for SimRacing games like F1 Challenge, rFactor, Assetto Corsa , Project Cars...
One guy asked me if I need a hand, so I was like “sure man”...
...he never answered back18 -

Fuck that day, honestly. Today during my driving lesson I was a witness of a car crash literally 5 meters in front of me (the older man cut the road of other guy, that other guy hit the old man's car and old man has hit the lamp post. Good thing no was injured, except of few bumpers, car doors and lamp).
The train which was supposed to take me back to Leiden was 10 minutes late, so I couldn't catch the earlier bus.
When I got off the train, went to catch a next bus, there was huge crowd outside, because police was taking care of the suspicious bag left in front of the train station (pic). Lots of cop, lots of people. Fortunately that wasn't a bomb.
The only positive thing was that I helped some nice Hindi guy find his bus 😁25 -
This week I learned:
a.) Always quadruple check new feature before pushing a new update - otherwise it will end with one to three hotfixes
b.) Never do the last minute changes to the features - that ends with two to four hotfixes
c.) Always make sure that the update system works - otherwise no one will get your hotfixes1 -
Hey guys, wanna see some spaghetti code? This is some parts of Yandere Simulator. More in comments6
-
I'm sitting in the train, the lady in front of me has an iPhone 6s Plus, I have Android (OnePlus 6) and the guy to the left has a freaking Windows Phone 8.1 (Nokia Lumia 930).
The question is, where's the BlackBerry guy?6 -
So my computer froze, just after I clicked on Toto Africa song on YouTube, and it was still playing it.
It’s the chilliest freeze that I’ve ever had1 -
Fuck HP!
They make worst fucking printers in the universe. Just because I don’t have color cartridge doesn’t mean I can’t print anything in monochrome! Also apparently my black cartridge is broken, even tho it worked just a minute ago.4 -
“You’ve turned on laptop just to check if the screen works? I hope you got some time for Windows Updates”6

Don’t teach with LOGO, but instead start with Scratch, then something more advanced like Python and after that maybe C# or Java.
Teach different operating systems and software, not only Windows and Microsoft Office. There should be class with Linux (Mint for instance) with LibreOffice and another with macOS and iWork.
Teach basic troubleshooting steps.
Less theory, more practice.
STOP BEING SUCH MICROSOFT ORIENTED.
Ability to use own laptop (I would be really happy to use my own one).
Teach basic commands for Windows and Unix based systems.
Teach how to install Windows and Linux.3 -
My first real exposure to a PC was when my father and me built one for myself. Y'know, some AMD Athlon 64, some MSI board, 2 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA 8600 GT, everything was nice.
I never put malware on that thing even though I heavily used it for things like games, I was really cautious with that even when I was like 6 years old (but my father once accidentally did, he killed it by damaging the filesystem on the harddrive which, funny enough, only took the malware with it)
I still have that PC, but it now has weird issues with memory management ;-; -
Well I feel like an idiot thanks to my IT teacher. This guy, this fucking guy thinks that we’re seeing computer for the first time. He’s literally saying “You see this black bar on the bottom? That’s taskbar.”. It’s like he’s teaching 7 years old childs 😤
But the worst part is my class mated don’t know such basics! They don’t know how binary code works, what is motherboard, how to login to school domain on Windows.
But on the flip side, they look at me like at the God 😏7 -
So me and my friend started doing a video game project. To be honest I was expecting it to be nothing but pain and suffer.
But it turned out to be really fun experience for both of us (plus I’m learning Unity) 😁 -
So my dad wants to try out Linux. I’m thinking of giving him Ubuntu Budgie or Linux Mint Cinnamon... Any suggestions?4
-
The new HUAWEI ad is so wrong. It literally shows addiction as something positive and cool: https://youtu.be/891NDt5QwHk2

I think that would be config tool for F1 Challenge ‘99-‘02 game which was called VMT Engine. It introduced me to modding community, the VMT Engine project taught me A LOT about software development.
The origin of this tool was I posted on F1 2014 VMT development forum thread “Hey! Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a tool that let you change tires type?”, so the VMT leader said “Why don’t you do it?”...So I did it 😐
I’m actually still updating the source code to this day1 -
Well, sure it’s nice to take a break from coding and visit some historical town. Here’s Cracow (Kraków) from today
-
I took apart 2014 Mac Mini today. I don't wanna ever do that again. It was horrible experience.
Also fuck Torx TR6 screws.6 -
I love open-source. In fact even my homeworks are open-source for my classmates!
...although my teachers don’t seem to like it... -
Making a Hackintosh - Round 2
Also, Linux is love, Linux is life. But if I have to choose my secondary OS between Windows or macOS, I would rather have macOS. And I know about Mojave existence, but I'm stuck with High Sierra due to the lack of Nvidia drivers on Mojave4 -
Oracle has banned an app in the App Store because it contained “JavaScript” in the name... any ideas for the new name for JavaScript©️?

So my Windows 10 after April Creators Update (aka Nothing Works) gets BSOD when I turn off Bluetooth, doesn’t recognize my headphones, turns them off if it does, WiFi forgets password after every single restart, most of the time I need to force Safe Mode to get the computer to boot because it freezes on black screen with cursor...
Just fucktastic10 -
When I try to learn for example new language, I’m trying to replicate my existing project in this specific language

And on that terrible disappointment, it's time to nuke that macOS install!
It would be easier if instead of getting GTX 1050 Ti, I grabbed some Radeon...6 -
Dear fellow devs who use Notepad++ as their primary code editor,
Why? I’m curious why you prefer it instead of Sublime Text, VSCode, or Atom? I’m not saying it’s better or worse than other programs, I’m just curious. I’ve tried to use it recently (although it was my first code editor I’ve ever used) and it really felt bulky to me.
Sincerely, Athlon.6 -
Someone posted a rant about pseudo HTML devs (I’m not gonna say who... @Alice). While she’s right I think there are two worse groups: Batch and Visual Basic wannabe devs30
-
KDE Connect is really a blessing. The fact that I can do everything and more with Android plus Linux combo than iOS plus Mac is superb. I mean, I can remotely send power off command, start Spotify and control it, remotely start apt upgrade, or turn off the screen is so useful. Plus I can reply to the any message from any messaging app, get notifications and transfer files quickly from PC to smartphone and the other way is just great.3
-
Well after a month with Brave web browser I'm forced to go back to Firefox. It's way unstable, too many bugs and glitches and lacks some add-ons1
-
My parents on the one side love my passion to programming (it’s actually because of my dad who introduced me to computers), but on the flip side they think that I should focus more on school - which is true, but you know... It’s hard to stop with something you like, isn’t it?
-
So LUA injector to Payday 2 requires on Linux certain library (libcurl3). So you know, sudo apt install libcurl3 and there you go!
You would think.
Apparently while you do that, the installation of libcurl3, it completely nukes your Steam installation... For some reason.
Can some please explain me, what the hell just happened? Please?1 -
Programming actually inspired me to start programming. But to be honest, I loved computers since always
-
As for today, I mostly play GTA: Online or Team Fortress 2.
By the way, any people here want to play Team Fortress 2 on Mann vs. Machines mode?3 -
Guys, I need a proper, fairly cheap and with high transfer website hosting ASAP. Any recommendations?14
-
This is bloody annoying me! On Windows 10 while you have taskbar on top (because that's most comfortable for me) most of apps show behind the taskbar :<4
-
I'm trying to convince my dad to switch to the Linux. Everyday he complains about his laptop being slow (although it has pretty much same specs like my laptop), the forced updates on Windows 10, how long it takes to load programs and stuff. He only uses Opera and LibreOffice for work, he doesn't have iPhone so he's not locked by iTunes. Perfect case study!
Yet every time I tell him that Linux doesn't force updates on you, runs faster and has all the software he needs, he says that "he's not a programer like I am". Then I reply to him "and that's a thing! Linux Mint for example doesn't even require to open terminal" (plus few years back he wanted to try it out)...
Any tips boys and girls? Should I give up or not? I mean, forcing the change will not do, but I also don't want to hear complains about Windows every day.12 -
Linux Mint MATE, Lubuntu or something else for this old PC?
Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
2 GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro FX 180016 -
In all fairness to macOS. To it's weird design choices, both Linux and Windows should copy way of installing most of macOS programs. Downloading and mounting .DMG file, drag & dropping the app into Applications folder and done! Life would be so much simpler with it. And yes, I know apt install/pacman -S/dpkg -i/any other package manager is quicker, but average Joe doesn't care about it!
Then again, it would create yet ANOTHER package managing method supported by two distros that no one really cares for...5 -
!rant
Last night I found two Athlon XP processors in my house. They're a 2400 and a 2700, but I don't know if they work because I don't have other parts to test them.
Nothing too interesting, I just thought it was kinda cool7 -
So this is what I got from Santa Clause... Or actually from my buddy - wanna do some data bases in Delphi?2

It triggered me so much when I heard from my teacher that “first touchscreen devices has been sold since 2010”1

I don't know if I can be developer anymore. After I went to high school (one of the best in Poland) everything seems to collapse. My grades are poor. Especially on math and physics, but surprisingly everything Computer Science related is better than average. I also know how to code and I don't struggle with math used while programming. Heck, I even made my first game at the age of 10 in Visual Basic. I just love programming, computer science, etc, but after I went to high school I just don't know anymore...5
-
I’ve been working on a update for config tool for a mod. The user asked me if I could add something like “note area” where you could write down anything... So I added it! It even appeared in one public beta build.
But then I’ve realized “wait, why the heck do I need it”. So in the next release it was gone. -
Why Windows 10 sucks so bad if you try to use it with taskbar on top?! Like every window behind the taskbar. It's annoying!1
-
YAS!
I've convinced my brother to try the Linux. Now I have to choose for him simple to use distro. I was thinking Linux Mint, but I don't really know if I should get him Cinnamon or MATE.8 -
Any ideas what to do with this old computer?
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.60 GHz
RAM: 5 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-E SLI
HDD: 150 GB17 -
So there are like these "Operating systems made with VB.NET"... Don't they know it's just a very fancy overlay for Windows... And it's pointless waste of system resources?4

I feel like a fucking idiot. I can't focus whatsoever on the code today, I look at it and can't understand it. Heck, I can't even make a simple C# script...4

I think I’m gonna do one day coding challenge this Saturday as a break from a game which I’m making 😁

Is it a good idea to develop non game app in Unity? Asking because I got an idea for a app and I know Unity very well. Way better than Xamarin for instance.3

Any idea how to run ASI loaders for games like Mafia or GTA San Andreas via Wine? (Especially Mafia, cuz I wanna apply widescreen fix)6

Is storing game score as static int is a good idea? I know you should avoid them, but is it the same in this case?3

Would you get a new laptop with Intel Celeron N3450, or slightly older with Intel Core i5 4310U? I'm talking both having 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM and only iGPU? Both for pretty much same price.9

Christmas greetings from ol' Athlon
