What is the point of having a progress bar if ..

Do NOT be overwhelmed nor discouraged when you realized how little you know.
after all software dev is still a work in progress :)6 -
Does anyone else feel like progress bars increase at random intervals and then stop at 99% until its actually done?16
-
When the green bar fills up... isn't that supposed to mean "complete"?
Why even have a progress bar if it's not tied to actual progress?
#justwindowsthings20 -
How do you politely tell someone that constant conversations about progress slow down progress?
Not only do I have to stop for 30mins to explain what things I've changed, but now I have to rant about it on devrant.3 -
Job Ad: You will report to leadership stakeholders on key progress initiatives and collaborate on business value add action objectives.

anyone else just wake up one day and just isn't in the mood to do any work and feels like they are making no progress.7

This is for all the developers out there. Keep learning and keep going!

Bored waiting for code to compile so here is a joke someone sent me last week .....
A man walks in a bar with his pet monkey. He sits down and orders a drink, meanwhile the monkey is running around all over the place and jumps up on a pool table. He grabs the 8 ball, shoves it into his mouth and swallows it hole.
"Holy crap!" says the bartender, completely livid. He says to the man, "Did you see what your stupid monkey just did?"
"Nope. What did he do this time?" says the man.
"He just swallowed one of the balls off the pool table, whole!" says the bartender.
"Yeah, well I hope it kills him 'cause he's been driving me nuts" says the man.
After finishing his drink, the man leaves.
A few weeks later the man returns to the bar with his monkey. After ordering a drink, the monkey starts running wild around the bar again. Up on the bar, he monkey finds some peanuts. He grabs one out of the bowl, sticks it up his butt, then pulls it out and eats it. The bartender is disgusted.
"Did you see what your stupid monkey did this time?" he asks.
"What now?" responds the man.
"He stuck a peanut up his butt, then pulled it out and ate it!" says the bartender.
"Well, what do you expect?" replied the man. "Ever since he ate that pool ball he measures everything first!"4 -
After 3 hours of trying to implement a feature, I’ve moved from 10 errors to 7 errors!
At least I’m doing some progress, I guess... 🤷♂️6 -
Programming on the privacy website together with 404response, this is awesome!
It's great to have someone who's good at frontend while you suck balls at it so that I can fully focus on the backend :D. (ewpratten if you still want to you can join 404response, he can explain you everything he's doing and how you can help)29 -
I’ve been working on a fun little project using Crystal and d-bus to control the lighting for Razer RGB devices. Making progress!24

Progress bar is still moving. Silently closed the current progress tab.4 -
Can't concentrate when this guy constantly keeps a check on the page number (progress) I have reached while learning GO. 😂5

That moment when you become happy because of another error, at least it could be progress.

Soooo my little encryption tool makes progress. <3
After a short break from development, we had our first successful loaded container yesterday!
This means:
- Protocoll is working
- We can create containers and store/copress files in it
- we're awesome
- I love it
- you are awesome, too!
(Loaded containers will be inaccessible for movement to different directories while our tool is open)49 -
Before starting to program I was impatient with the progress of technology, now that i've started learning to program I'm intimidated by the progress in the tech industry.1

I have to show the client 3 weeks of progress tomorrow. On a Saturday.
I haven't even started yet 🤥8 -
dear boss,
I can't work if you're calling me every 5 minutes to check on my progress. You're only slowing us down. I suggest you resign.4 -

The boss is asking you what is the progress of task1.
You provide the status.
You have 4 hours meeting where he also attends.
The meeting ends.
Boss comes to your desk and asks what is the progress on task1 -_-*¥¥¥¥¥
Fml. I was also on the same meeting OK?!5 -
It's a satisfying moment when you actually get work done on a personal project. It's comforting knowing I am capable of not being a lazy shit all the time. Gotta keep this up.1

I'm not a windows fan or windows user but imagine if an user ran your java app in windows , your app could use special windows features like taskbar progress !
Now it's possible (on other OS's your app will run normally without these features). JTaskbarLib is my first java open source library. it can also change the window opacity in a decorated JFrame !
This is my project in github:

Fired because an metric they used was too small (accepted tickets). My problem was: everyone of the others took imidiatly the tickets, just to have them "in progress".5

I fucking hate the Safari browser to death.
This piece of disk space waste is 50% of the reason why I have to spend hours to find out what the fuck is incorrectly displaying or not working on W.I.P. websites.
The other 50% is Edge, IE <=11 and Firefucks.
Just for piss smelling Safari, I need to either run a VM with Crapple OS X for debugging or borrow a Crapbook from $randomPerson.
Is it fucking not possible to compile Safari blowser to run on Linux or Winblows?
Eventhough I'm disgusted about Google and its privacy and data mining policies, Chrome is the most decent browser there is on the whole digital world. It only happens extremely rarely that something is not working/displaying as expected during development.
Most browser developers seem to be useless pubes eaters and like to shower with curd soap.13 -
Me:
working on this personal project for a year with some progress every week..

I got this new Idea for this new project!4 -
Due to working from home I decided a few months back to invest the money I save instead of keeping it all in my bank account.
About 10-20% of it goes to a long term investing account and the rest into the one I manage actively.
The nice thing about homeoffice is that I can have a lunch break an hour later when the market opens and review my shit, then again checking up on it in the late evening before the market closed here.
Have been playing around with trading for years but never did it with patience and discipline.
After 3 months I managed to reach over 16% profit.
My account is small so it’s not a lot of money but I’m focusing on the % rather than the $ at the moment. It’s a start..
Anyway, thought I’ll share my progress with you guys as some of you probably invest as well..
Im exclusively swing trading, so holding my positions between 1-14 days with no leverage.

PM: we need to show some progress, lets build a dashboard to display metrics.
Me: what metrics do we use ? The current period?
PM: No, those aren't good. Use math to show we made progress *wink*

Some fun facts :
☻ Programmers spend approximately 30% of the time surfing the source code 😁
☻ Progress in programming can be classified into 4 stages:
(a). Complex Programming
(b). Making Progress
(c). Slow Progress
(d). Stuck
☻ Programmers have a tendency to report their problems incompletely
☻ The main error messages, execution times and runtime compilation errors and the average time to solve them
☻ The software maintenance consumes more than 50% of the effort
☻ Ctrl C, Ctrl V, and Ctrl-Z have saved more lives than Batman tbh😇3 -

A while ago I found one of my old notes. It was from around two years ago. I had written down my programming long term goals and what I wanted to learn (more like a wishlist). While I was reading it, I realised that throughout these two years, without me being actually aware, I had learned all of it. It had been a slow progress but eventually not only had I reached it, but I had also surpassed it. It made me feel pretty good about myself. 😊

Terrible week. Micromanagement killing all progress. The only positive note this week is that we got a new scent of soap.

Took me longer than I wanted to, but I finally finished ch6 in LFS 8.3 :) I officially installed all the necessary packages from source and backed everything up (in case I screw up again I'll only have to start from ch7 xD). Spend 10 minutes patiently waiting for a progress bar to gradually make its way to the end, only to reset to the beginning and start all over again. Realize you actually have NO idea what the actual progress is or how long this is going to take and that the first progress bar was actually just representing the progress to this realization.

After a lot of work I figured out how to build the graph component of my LLM. Figured out the basic architecture, how to connect it in, and how to train it. The design and how-to is 100%.
Ironically generating the embeddings is slower than I expect the training itself to take.
A few extensions of the design will also allow bootstrapped and transfer learning, and as a reach, unsupervised learning but I still need to work out the fine details on that.
Right now because of the design of the embeddings (different from standard transformers in a key aspect), they're slow. Like 10 tokens per minute on an i5 (python, no multithreading, no optimization at all, no training on gpu). I've came up with a modification that takes the token embeddings and turns them into hash keys, which should be significantly faster for a variety of reasons. Essentially I generate a tree of all weights, where the parent nodes are the mean of their immediate child nodes, split the tree on lesser-than-greater-than values, and then convert the node values to keys in a hashmap to make lookup very fast.
Weight comparison can be done either directly through tree traversal, or using normalized hamming distance between parent/child weight keys and the lookup weight.
That last bit is designed already and just needs implemented but it is completely doable.
The design itself is 100% attention free incidentally.
I'm outlining the step by step, only the essentials to train a word boundary detector, noun detector, verb detector, as I already considered prior. But now I'm actually able to implement it.
The hard part was figuring out the *graph* part of the model, not the NN part (if you could even call it an NN, which it doesn't fit the definition of, but I don't know what else to call it). Determining what the design would look like, the necessary graph token types, what function they should have, *how* they use the context, how thats calculated, how loss is to be calculated, and how to train it.
I'm happy to report all that is now settled.
I'm hoping to get more work done on it on my day off, but thats seven days away, 9-10 hour shifts, working fucking BurgerKing and all I want to do is program.
And all because no one takes me seriously due to not having a degree.
Fucking aye. What is life.
If I had a laptop and insurance and taxes weren't a thing, I'd go live in my car and code in a fucking mcdonalds or a park all day and not have to give a shit about any of these other externalities like earning minimum wage to pay 25% of it in rent a month and 20% in taxes and other government bullshit.4 -

!(isRant(thisPost));
Submitted my third pull request today in just a couple months as an intern, got told I'm doing a great job and already being considered to move to a more in depth dev team. Honestly a dream come true. Great company, great people, and I have a solid shot at a REAL full time dev position after college. I'm so happy man all that work finally paying off. -
This was originally a reply to a rant about the excessive complexity of webdev.
The complexity in webdev is mostly necessary to deal with Javascript and the browser APIs, coupled with the general difficulty of the task at hand, namely to let the user interact with amounts of data far beyond network capacity. The solution isn't to reject progress but to pick your libraries wisely and manage your complexity with tools like type safe languages, unit tests and good architecture.
When webdev was simple, it was normal to have the user redownload the whole page everytime you wanted to change something. It was also normal to have the server query the database everytime a new user requested the same page even though nothing could have changed. It was an inefficient sloppy mess that only passed because we had nothing better and because most webpages were built by amateurs.
Today webpages are built like actual programs, with executables downloaded from a static file server and variable data obtained through an API that's preferably stateless by design and has a clever stateful cache. Client side caches are programmable and invalidations can be delivered through any of three widely supported server-client message protocols. It's not to look smart, it's engineering. Although 5G gets a lot of media coverage, most mobile traffic still flows through slow and expensive connections to devices with tiny batteries, and the only reason our ever increasing traffic doesn't break everything is the insanely sophisticated infrastructure we designed to make things as efficient as humanly possible.11 -
Make a change, test it out. Nothing changes.

lol @ doing stand-ups for the sake of stand-ups. I used to work for a company that vigorously applied them. Bro, I don't care about your development progress. My career is perpetually doubting / questioning my skill set while making steady progress and receiving praise.
Whether its for personal projects or work (interning) I feel so delayed and unskilled, yet I know I've made a hell of a lot of progress and wouldn't even recognize the me I am now
What is this dichotomy -

Once I was using rsync to copy some large files from a cloud to my local machine. So right after I started it, I went out for some coffee and when I came back it was not done. And to my horror I forgot to use --progress. For people who don't know what it does is , it only shows you how much copying is done. So now after about 45 mins of copying done , I had to stop it start all over again with --progress so that I can see the progress as it completed. 🤔2

I hate the feature of c# that a member variable can be used as an function!
Let me get this variable. why does my cpu spike?
Because it calls 10 other functions to fill this float when needed.
float progress{
get { return DoWorkInDifferentFunctions(); }
}
Use this instead:
float CalculateProgress(){
return DoWorkInDifferentFunctions();
}
because people will use this like:
if(progress > 10.0f && progress < 25.0f){
DoStuff(progress);
}
Instead of:
float CurrentProgress = CalculateProgress();
if(CurrentProgress > 10.0f && CurrentProgress < 25%){
DoStuff(CurrentProgress );
}

Damn, since my last rant where I was complaining about me having big troubles coding stuff when asked by an exercise or given instructions, I feel like I've made huge progress now, by sticking a bit to my "at least 5 exercises a day" routine, now as soon as I code, it comes to me more and more naturally.
I'm so glad I can see the practice really paying off, even thanks to a simple function working great at the first compile makes me feel warm inside even tho it ain't gonna last long.2 -
I just love optimizing stuff and here is my story I think somehow is very cool as you can see the progress just looking at two values.
//NOTE: This api relies on another api which is slow af. The requests are done here directly but later will be carried out async and in the background by using some ticket system.
1) First PoC
2) Used caching of requests and improved method to filter out unnecessary stuff
3) Optimized response formatting
NOTE to myself: Things are going too good...4 -
As I'm on a research/algorithm improvement project at work I'm working pretty much independently. As such I've set up an automated test framework and writing tests for any piece of code I touch.
Today as I was fixing a bug in production area I was demoing my tests to CTO and principal design engineer. They come from a hardware background and have pushed back against automated tests in the past but they were interested in what I was doing.
I WILL DRAG THEM KICKING AND FUCKING SCREAMING INTO THE WORLD OF AUTOMATED TESTS.1 -
My dev area of focus is Stack overflowing. When you develop orient to errors, stack overflow is the best way to progress.

Sometimes, "a different error, yes progress" is an illusion. It's like pushing a car that has broken down up a hill, after you finally reach the top, it starts rolling down nicely, only to meet another larger hill on the other side.3

What progress have you made?
Well today we hand crafted ... a new lie about the apps we are writing. Customers should eat this one up.
Good, good.

Heya! I've created something in C# you might find useful (though it's simplistic, and not my idea).
It's a program which has a progress bar for the current year, one for the current month, for the day, hour, and minute. Here it is, if you want to try it: https://dropbox.com/s/...
Based off the Mac version (not made by me): https://twitter.com/year_progress/...
Which costs $5, by the way... While I uploaded it for free u.u
What do you think?
Also, there might be an easter egg for 2019 ;D
Happy new year, everyone! 💙2 -
Because of this spaghettis shit of code I was unable to make some progress. now I have to bullshit my progress in the standup. because telling I wrote 0 lines of code feels like I should be ashamed of myself. FUCK!3

Worse than an incompetent colleague who can't help me fix technical issues is a demanding, confusing, beat around the bush, boss as a project director.
Project Manager is away and Project Director steps in to take over. Starts barking orders and when I try to actively contribute positively to get the project going, he stops at me, barks that I was asking the wrong questions or doing the wrong tasks. This isn't my first project rodeo. I have had plenty of project experience under my belt but he belittles me. I know what needs done and get the project done and over with.
I guess I know what I'll do. Avoid proactively contribute and just hang back until I get orders on what to do. Because fuck progress. Or until I hear more from my original Project Manager. -
Progress on my blog (incocast) goes smoothly, even implemented a basic rss feed. Currently the blog is Service Layer only (because I still have to create a front-end)
It might even be interesting to open some api calls to the public... I don't know yet.. Maybe..
Either way the next thing to implement is a commenting system! :) -
Projects are like progress bars, they are really quick at 80-99% and then it takes a while until they have finished. The reason is the same, nobody thought about milestones and goals.1
-
The PM asks me almost hourly about my progress on this project. I am slowly training him to ask me through PM instead of face to face.
Meetings are now being taken at my desk through apps like Hangouts Meet instead of the Conference Room.
I'm chipping away, guys and gals....I'm chipping away.3 -
Just running a backup script that will take a while to complete and decided to create myself s nice progress bar, using pv.
Have just wasted 10 minutes starting at the said progress bar :( -
Just tried to present some progress I made on a library to a discord community and all they did was calling me a weeb because my wallpaper 😭8

CSS (and all of frontend) is hard. The last few braincells left in me are slowly dying.
I just wanted a progress bar. HTML 5 supports <progress> out of the box. But all browsers want to act differently. Add more boilerplate for each browser type. Somehow got a transparent background on progress bar but it still won't let me change progress color.(Surprisingly, only IE let me change the color) At last, settled with a transparent div with a colored span inside, + js to handle value. Was this really the best way? Nope. But this was the only thing that worked,(other than importing a JS library, which would render a SVG to replicate a progressbar)
Why is front end so convoluted? Half of the things do not even make sense to me. Is this really the direction we want to go in the future?9 -
We are learning a method for reflecting on our progress.
The teachers use a wedding as an example in front of 5 classes of guys only.
Lost all interest -
⚠️🚨 PRO TIP 🚨⚠️
ZOOM IN ON TERMINALS + STAGE MANAGER = LITTLE SIDEBAR PREVIEW OF TERMINAL PROGRESS3 -
After a weekend of struggling with dev, I am finally seeing some progress...Slowly but surely.
Have a good Monday and a good week ahead 😊👍 -
Just fladhed windows 10 on a usb stick (4.7GB) and forgot the options for progress...
My suffering increased exponentially -
I think I’ve gone backwards in terms of my progress from my start up app idea. Ah well. We go again.4
-
Memorizing hundreds of commands with thousands of parameters to be used on an unforgiving command prompt was the next logical step. I mean who needs GUIs or IDEs with intuitive context menus and point-click operations in 2017 anyway?
I must be getting old.4 -
Since you started your job, how many programming books have you read to get ahead in your job?
Examples:
- You're a Java programmer, so you read the OCP for Java 11 and then you get your OCP cert
- You're a .NET consultant, so you read another .NET book17 -
Sports made me a team player and overall determined person. It thought me that progress requires time and that appetite comes with the eating.

What do you do when you're trying to push yourself further by learning new concepts and techniques but start to feel the burnout closing in?
Usually I'm useless for about week if I push myself too hard. Would love to overcome this.
How do you guys handle this?4 -
The confusion, regret and self loathing I feel looking through old code is only comparable to how I feel seeing pictures of a gangly, 15 year old me on Facebook.
-
after much discussion we removed the "implemented" column in our task board, now 10 homeless tickets stuck between "in progress" and "in review"
-
Sooooo how much should I expect to get accomplished as a new junior developer? I feel like I'm making progress but basically everything is a struggle and I do it wrong to learn. Is this normal? I understand a lot but also the complexity of the projects im working on (in comparison to my skill level) means I'm basically always wrong and in need of guidance.
Thoughts? -
I'm excited to be starting Lambda School next week! I plan to keep track of my progress, so look forward to that.2

Year 2020:
It's full of possibilities and no idiots have tried to hinder my progress during this year. -
Mine was when I finally moved from coding in statements to seeing just a little more of the picture by exposing myself to modules/classes. I still can't separate my one long index.js file into separate files (Discord bot, splitting my commands code into their own files) but I felt that progress. A pace of progress that I'm sure a glacier understands. I'm just hoping for some nudges from you Titanic's out there. ;)

sort of an update on my midterm project read my last rant to catch up.
Progress so far has been absolutely phenomenal I have a sign up and login page, a profile page, home page, and can post to the app now in real time. for my first time using Kotlin I'm insanely surprised at what I've accomplished so far.1 -
So I was working on my game finishing up the first level when I try going back through the portal to the previous scene then my unity freezes had to end process using task manager and lost progress
-
A change of pace in these weird and wonky times!
Been a good quarantine so far!
I've been working steadily on a few side projects, and I'm quite proud of myself, that I'm actually "working", instead of TODOing them.
Tinkering with a chrome extension, making considerable progress on my personal website, being more mindful, establish a proper routine and started a new project with a friend!1 -
Indian developer.
Trying to get maps api Street view to work.
30 mins later. Still no progress.
Opens google, and types "Street view India".
And what does he see?4 -
Lost all of my progress because i checkout to other branch without push it before. Is there anything that i can do to retrieve it back ?
#NoobQuestion2 -
Does anyone have any helpful tips for developing in react native for Android? Because I'm entirely frustrated with how long it takes to make negative progress.5
-
when docker desktop lies to you it updated when you looked to update to latest weeks ago
so you try again and realize there's no fucking progress bar to get any sense of progress -
Having a progress meter seems to make the wait a lot shorter... or at knowing it's not hanging it seems...2
-
« Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress. » - Gandhi
But sometimes some dev disagree for too long...!! -
has anyone tries sieera with mid 2012 editon? little worried the progress bar is nt moving and I am very desparate to meet sirj2
-
I got a guy in my team but different location who is completely useless. He doesn't do anything useful, yet always have something to say.
Manager(M) asking him for progress on some task via email:
M: Any progress on this?
Useless guy: oh yes we have to tasks to solve *long description of the tasks*
M: Yup I was asking if there was any progress since we agreed this yesterday
And now there is radio silence since Friday :) -
When I found out about it, I fell in love with ngrok.io for sharing localhost projects progress to friends...
-
have anyone tried to install visual Studio professional 2017... it stucked so don't know what to do now... I don't want to lose all the progress T.T9
-
I've been doing web dev for 3 years. Now, I want to do some mobile stuff. After I went through some internet resources, I decided to give Phonegap a chance.
Is it worthy my time?!7 -
Just a thought. Writing a program then clicking run, and your code runs first time, should be something that becomes more common place as one improves their coding ability, now that we call development. To be always surprised when that happens, almost seems to say that such is a matter of luck.3
-
Webscraper progress delayed for several weeks due to tLinkType and tWildCard. Apparently it's spelled tWildcard

Learning Tip:
While learning some new tool/technology never just go and start looking at the handbooks and/or tutorials. Always set small goals for yourself first or ask someone proficient in that tool/technology set these goals for you so you can follow along and make real progress while learning. -
Started new project yesterday. Really pleased with how it's progressing. Made me appreciate just how far I've come in a short space of time - I'd have not been able to do half of this 6months ago, and especially not in 2days!
-
Having the capability to work from home (or anywhere really) with little to no hindrance of my progress or my ability to communicate with my co-workers
-
Last sunday i in Lider to my life Todoist and finally it looks that i'm making a progress and don't feel bad :)
-
Technology Acceptance Model "has diverted researchers" attention away from other important research issues and has created an illusion of progress in knowledge accumulation
-
Is it necessary to check the tracking progress again again when you are getting swags from kaggle?
Idk why I'm doing this..😁 -
For progress and success all you have to do is be the right person in the... holy shit, I missed it! Damn lag!
-
Stop changing the spec with "minor changes" (that each add a bunch of work) while dev is in progress god dammit!
