New devRant feature! Filtering by post type! This took a bit longer to get out than we had planned, but now that extra click to label a post type will be put to good use! Hate memes but love rants? Want to only see questions? Don't want to see random off-topic posts? Filter away!
We're pushing to Android now, iOS shortly, and web will be coming soon.41 -
When I worked for an online dating app, at one point we had the ridiculous idea to try to take a popular LinkedIn feature and convert it to a dating app feature in order to capitalize off of the success LinkedIn had with it.
The feature was LinkedIn endorsements. The idea was to allow the dating app users to get endorsements from people in their contacts lists on certain traits/features from a defined list (ex. Funny, smart, etc.). It wasn’t a terrible idea on the surface, but the way we planned to execute on it was insane and everyone knew it was going to fail. To avoid any controversy all of the endorsable terms were watered down to the point where no one would ever find using them/asking their friends for endorsements to be any fun. And the worst part was how we planned to get people to ask their friends for endorsements - management wanted us to build a contact list importer and just spam email contacts with “please endorse me” emails. The whole thing was ridiculous.
No one, including myself, wanted to build the feature/spam tool but management really wanted it so we had to build it. Like expected, it failed very quickly when it was clear no one cared about getting their real life friends to endorse them on some dating app, and the spam contacts took was ineffective and... spammy.10 -
I accidentally created a bug that became an amazing feature at my last job.
It was for a program to read barcode tickets (we created software and web solutions for events), and to register the barcode sacnners to the computer I had to do some magic with USB-detection since it was not specified which brand the scanners would be (so no SDK would be available).
When the scanner was plugged in it would create its own thread so it wouldn't interfere with the UI of the program when it was reading/sending data.
Somehow I messed up with the thread termination for new scanners so it would accept to connect more than one scanner and it would work flawless since it was its own thread in the program.
When I tried to think out a solution for multiple scanners when planning it I got a headache and thought that's something for later. Turned out alright in the end apparently.8 -
Hey everyone! As many of you have already seen, we just finished rolling out a new feature that allows you to subscribe to specific users! This feature sends you an in-app and push notification whenever anyone you subscribe to posts a new rant. You can subscribe to a user from the button in the top right of their profile or one of their rants.
Please let us know if you have any questions!
P.S. apologies to those who already subscribe to my rants and got a notif before for a test rant I created. I forgot we had subscribe now :)20 -
I've always made this joke, but it happened for real.
There was a existing bug in our machine for a very long time. So long that the validation engineer now treats it as a feature and they raised a issue when the bug was fixed :/7 -
I'm so excited about this small little feature I implemented in devRant unofficial UWP.
Can't stop using it… 😅
I hope you'll enjoy it (coming in v2.0.0-beta15 very soon). 😁13 -
You might know by now that India demonetized old higher value notes and brought in new one. The new ones easily tear off easily and generally feel cheaper and less reliable than pervious ones.
One interesting thing people discovered is that rubbing it with cloth makes the ink transfer to the cloth. Sign of crap printing. Here's government response:
The new currency notes have a security feature called 'intaglio printing'. A genuine currency note can be tested by rubbing it with a cloth; this creates a turbo-electric effect, transferring the ink colour onto the cloth
TL;DR: its not a bug, it's a feature7 -
@dfox Feature request
Could we have fully displayed rants ? Maybe as a setting disabled by default ?
I mean sometimes i'd like to relax and just mindlessly scroll, and having to tap to read longer rant and then tap back is, well, too much.
Especially when the rant ia only like 2 words above limit.16 -
"Never fix a bug which has stayed in the system for a long time, unless asked for. The bug might actually be a feature for the user."
- My supervisor1 -
As most of you already know, the mentioned users in a rant don't receive a notification so you have to mention them again in a comment.
After a suggestion of @Cozyplanes I decided to implement a feature that make this automatic.
Just check the box and forget about it.
It will be available soon in the next update of devRant unofficial UWP!7 -
Always the same story:
Marketing: hey I'm gonna do a demo to a customer. They were asking for feature XYZ. That's ready on thr staging server right? Do you think I could use the staging server for the demo?
Devs: well feature XYZ is not 100% done. Basically just feature X is done, and it still has a few bugs. The deadline ain't for another month, since we gotta finish ABC first. I guess you could use the staging, but it has a lot of bugs.
Marketing: perfect!
*after presentation*
Marketing: the staging had so many bugs! Why didn't you tell me?! It was so embarrassing showing it to new customers! Anyway, they loved the new feature. We need it to be ready ASAP.
Devs: What?! That's gonna mess up with our schedule. You know what? Fine, but feature ABC will have to wait another month.
Marketing: Well, it'd be ideal if we could do both...
Devs: Pay for more devs or dor extra hours.
Marketing: Just do XYZ. It's a pity that you'll have to push back ABC but it's fine, XYZ is more important.
(I might ask, if it was so important, why didn't you notice so in the meeting where we had decided that ABC would be prioritized?)
*tons of working hours later*
Devs: There, we finished XYZ.
Marketing: Yay! Wow, this month we'll have two major features done: ABC and XYZ!
Devs: No, ABC is not done yet.
Marketing: What? But the deadline was this week.
Devs: It was, but then you decided to prioritize XYZ and we said we had to push back ABC to get XYZ ready, and you agreed.
Marketing: Did we? Fine. But do it quick.
Marketing and their mood swings.6 -
Feature request:
When @ is pressed, opens up a list of people who have commented on a rant, do we can mention them quickly14 -
I know that I should stop mindless scroll through devRant when it suddenly crashes 😎
It’s a feature at this point.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4 -
Last week I had a presentation of a project (webapp) for a customer.
She: "Can I do {insert feature here}?
Me: "Is that a question or a feature request?" -
@dfox
!rant, it's the Feature request
Possibility to post `a code snippet with monospaced font` would be usefull.
Or even
```
def multiline_code():
from 2 to Inf:
"Lines of code"
```
Sth like in markdown.9 -
I am just a relatively newbie at devRant, but if I see something like in the picture I feel like devRant needs a feature to subscribe/unsubscribe to an rant without commenting.
(Don't know if this has already been discussed here)7 -
If your manager asks for a "rough time estimate" for a project, there is a higher than 99% chance that your answer will be written down and be used in presentations of project roadmap to upper management and/or marketing, who will create a hard deadline based on your rough estimate and communicate this to customers/clients, and then blame you for not keeping the deadline when it turns out (as it always does) that the rough estimate was off by several months because feature creep caused by upper management.3
-
Kind of rant.
Why doesn't the cat sit on the keyboard?
At least my two cats just love that place. Perhaps a feature request?11 -
Easy cop out for people who wrote code vulenerable to SQL injection: It's not a bug, it's a feature that let's users search using SQL syntax.1
-
I love my thinkpad, it grew a feature where it shocks me every few minutes to let me know that i need to get shit done7
-
What do you guys think of having a "go anonymous" feature while ranting?
I was thinking when community will go larger and people who know each other in real life, start following each other, then it might become hard for them to rant about stuff or they might become hesitant in rantings.26 -
When a minor bug inspires clients to add a new functionality :|
Instead of 'video calling' icon to make video calls, I mistakenly displayed calendar icon in the App and now clients want me to add schedule video call feature :|6 -
“If it happens once, it’s a bug.
If it happens twice, it’s a feature.
If it happens more than twice, it’s a design philosophy.”1 -
manager: Just create that new feature real quick... We'll refactor and make it a good feature in a couple months...
me: *see image*2 -
I think devRant should have a feature to not procrastinate, you will need to enable it somewhere in the settings. So if it detects you are using devRant for too long it will prompt a dialog to tell you to stop procrastinating.
BTW, I think this will be the first app to deliberately try to get users out of it XD3 -
Manager: "We're gonna have to work over the weekend to add this shiny new feature!"
Me: "Peanuts and Incentives included?"
Manager: "No, but you get job satisfaction!"
Me: 😒4 -
@dfox I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but...
Feature request: Autocomplete suggestions for user-name mentions when we type @. Shouldn't take long, right?😋😋10 -
In one of our webinterfaces you could swap between users once you logged in by changing the user in the link.
Not intended but our support is using this "feature" frequently because then they don't have to log in again when helping another client so it's not planned to be fixed4 -
I guess the best feature of devRant is that the homepage, where we see all the rants, does not show who posted each rant. It just shows the rants. That's it. Great to see the app is "rant centric" and not "user centric".3
-
*based on a true story*
Co-worker: Let's release it
Me: Wait, I want to add just a little feature
Co-worker: Is it necessary?
Me: Trust me
*5 minutes later*
Co-worker: So, have you finished implementing your "little feature"?
Me: Yeah, well, it's done. Maybe.
Co-worker: What the hell have you done?
Me: MAYBE I've added 647 lines of codes to the file to implement my little feature, MAYBE it doesn't works and MAYBE the entire project is compromised
Co-worker: ah3 -
I see devrant has added a feature never saw this before... It's pretty good... Can somebody tell me how it does the check ?17
-
What do you mean you no longer want the feature? We have developed the feature, we have tested the feature, we have sign off for the feature. You are getting this feature, whether you like it or not!
-
Would people use a feature where they could swipe on a rant they've seen. This way newer stuff could be let through but old stuff wouldn't keep popping up every time you reopen devrant.8
-
System design meeting with the client.
Client: We need feature X in the design document
Me: But feature X was not a requirement, so it's not in the document and we will not add it.
Client: But feature X should be a common feature today.
Me: That doesn't matter, it wasn't a requirement. And besides that you don't even need it today, the planned system doesn't even support feature X, so we couldn't implement it, even if it was mentioned in the design document.
Client: But we may need it some day, and what do you do, when we decide to enhance the system in a few years and we need that feature then?
Me: Then we make you an offer for feature X.
Inner me: You ordered a bicyle and now you want it converted into a delivery truck next year without charge. That's not how things work.3 -
>spends two hours adding a cool feature
>no one's using it
>nah, it's cool. it took me like 5 minutes anyways... -
Just used my first "It's not a bug, it's a feature" explanation 😂. However, the irritating part is, I had to explain it to another person from IT industry (I mean testers) who is from another company.
And it's really a feature and not a bloody bug. Stop reporting it on the bugs list 😥3 -
It would be great if there's a feature that you'll see the rants of other devs around your area. Must be exciting, ain't it?16
-
*9 months ago*
We want this feature! Our clients need this feature! It's gonna make their lives so much more convenient, and perhaps even deprecate other features!
* nobody uses it *
* Today *
Someone used the feature and screwed up cause they didn't know how to use it (the feature was working fine). Let's delete it.4 -
Just thought of a cool feature for devRant: rant it later!
I get why the 2 hours limit between rants exists, but it would be so cool to write a rant and the app to self post it after the 2 hours limit expires!
And it could also give a notification that the rant was posted.
What do you think?8 -
Tldr; my "this is not bug, its a feature" moment actually turned my bug into a feature.
Today we were presenting a project which has imposible deadline. I am developing this small project alone (which is probably good). I implemented core features first but I know project still have bugs and a lot of tech debts. Another friend started to presenting our demo and a wild bug appeared as expected. He was adding rows to a table. To add a new you gotta open new modal by clicking + button and fill the form. One of the fields had a bug. When you add row by clicking Ok button, the value of the field stayed there after you open modal again. So its basically a state problem in React. I forgot to clear previous state of modal. When they see that and my friend said "oh we got a bug there". Then I enabled my mic and said "thats not a bug, thats a feature. I didn't want to enter that field again and again when I adding multiple rows and made it persistent." and you know what? They liked the idea! They requested to add that bug to two more fields. I was just joking and my "this is not bug, its a feature" moment actually turned my bug into a feature. Instead of fixing it, I'm creating more of this bug. LOL!5 -
When you find a bug in a "min" js file and you don't have the not minified version anymore... ok, it's not a bug it's a feature.6
-
Subject of message: "Important: New feature for all 000webhost users." Thanks, 000webhost, an hour of downtime a day was exactly the feature I wanted to be implemented. P.S. if you have OCD, don't look at how many unread messages I have10
-
Feature request:
A lot of people have been commenting on rants just to later get notifications about it, but also from my experience often times I comment on a rant but don't want to be subscribed to it.
Why not make it not subscribe you to the rant by default, and instead change the rant mute button to do the opposite and subscribe you to that rant? It would avoid the pointless comments, and this7 -
@dfox feature request:
Plot of ++s per time. And maybe vertical line of when rants were posted, something like this:7 -
Feature request - auto play gif
It would be really awesome if the gif would play automatically and not by clicking on the rant's gif.
Of course we can keep a setting option to keep it on or off. What do you guys think?2 -
Feature request:
Swipe between rants so you don't have to return to the feed if you read more / comment -
#feature
This just came into my mind. What about replacing the loading avatar if you start the app that is shown at the bottom right corner with your own avatar? 😂6 -
When you've written out a grand and glorious rant or maybe an idea for a new feature, you're about to hit Post, then suddenly you realise - "Nah, that's shit" and close the modal.
-
!rant
@dfox
Many people use snippets of code in their Rants, so it's maybe a nice feature to be able to add codeblocks to rants..7 -
maybe it's time feature is added for devrant simple community dev projects. there could be games, parody websites, you name it. projects could be hosted on github, and indexed at a "projects" tab here on devrant, so we can choose something and start rolling with our pals from devrant when we get bored at work :) @dfox (inspired by rant from @Notebookdeviant)3
-
// Feature Request START
Is it possible we can have some kind of markdown on posts and comments? Maybe not bold or italic, but because of the target of the app, some kind of one-line and multi-line code blocks that highlight from other text (for example: having a gray background, using a consolas font, etc)
// Feature Request END1 -
I knew I had found the right group of friends when one of them suggested we try SQL Injection on the instant messaging feature of the bowling alley console.
Unrelated, do people not think, "hmm, that seems like an unnecessary feature?"2 -
Public feature request: If we tap at "devRant", the feed refreshes. Can we have the same thing for rants? My shitty internet at home is fast, but choppy so when I check my notifications and it doesn't load the rant, I have pretty much no idea what that notification was about.2
-
Client writes a bug report: This and that doesn't work.
Me: This functionality never was implemented. Please open a feature request.
Client: But this is a bug. Without this feature, the service won't work as we expect.
Me: But this wasn't in the requirements for release. So you have to contact the PM for a feature request.
Client: THIS IS A BUG! FIX IT!
Me: GO FUCK YOURSELF! THIS IS A NEW FEATURE AND YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!
Unfortunately, I never sent the mail. But I kept it in the drafts. Maybe someday...1 -
Hey, how about this feature: a "subscribe" button. If someone you follow posts a rant, you can get a notification.8
-
@dfox what would you say about a "following" feature?
Because I've noticed some absolute regular golden rants coming from some of the same ranters on here and would be cool to never miss the stuff they come out with.3 -
>site is production ready
>client requests new feature by end of week
>add feature and then site breaks on last day of week
>client freaks out even though we warned this is what happens when you add new features DURING LAUNCH WEEK1 -
Client: "I found a bug on your website. Its not possible to submit the contact form."
Me: "No bug. Its a feature"
#answerforeverything4 -
Guess who implemented a whole new feature in 3.5 lines of code and a simple CSS class.
This awesome guy.
Take that, frameworks.6 -
When they announce a new feature in a video that goes live today, but the feature isn't build yet. It isn't build yet because they never told the IT department that it should go live today. So now I'm stuck hotfixing it.1
-
Devrant feature request:
Filter notifs so I can actually get to my mentions without scrolling through random comments and ++ notifs.2 -
I have a minor feature request for the android app.
I would love to swipe down to refresh the current view. The reason for this is that sometimes my Internet connection isn't great and a rant does not load (or any other page).
It makes the app feel slightly gimmicky while a simple refresh would suffice.
@dfox1 -
I have a feature suggestion for devrant: some kind of polling system.
This idea came into my mind with the survey a few days ago.
Since almost all of us are devs, aspiring or experienced, we can expect (somewhat) professional opinions, e.g. on how to tackle a specific problem.
Maybe it's even possible to make this a paid service somehow. I thought about this:
Open a poll for all registered users: $0
Add requirements for a user to have to be able to vote on the poll: +0.99$ each:
- has ranted at least X times
- has at least X ++s
- has a StackOverflow account connected
...
This way, the OP can narrow down the target audience to a specific group.
Maybe...? I don't know if something like this already exists somewhere else.3 -
When a manager asks if you can implement a feature (their are legitimately not sure if it is even possible) and you say yes and they say, "Good, 'cause I already assured the client that we would provide it on the next release"
Like, what the actual fuck...1 -
#feature
On the 9Gag Android app, you can "scroll" up and down by using the volume up/down, if the music isn't playing. (I think you have to enable this in the setings).
I find this quite convinient, and would love to this here too.
@dfox and @trogus5 -
Today, in "Marketing showed a Beta feature to a bunch of cusomters"...:
"I shouldn't have given access to the Beta server to the new user... They're gonna find all of these bugs and they're not gonna be happy..."
You don't say -
Idea for a devrant feature:
Devrant could have plugin support and the community could add plugins for clients to download.4 -
That moment when the bug you are trying to troubleshoot isn't a bug but rather the result of a feature you wrote that actually fucking works!
-
@dfox @trogus
How about adding feature and bug report in app?
Add it in more tab like the discussions.
When clicked, there will be two tabs called feature and bugs. We can report them and dfox can make a checkbox only for him to click when viewed. That way, it would be more efficient.3 -
@dfox
Feature request:
Open DevRant on the day page If I have opened DevRant less than 24 hours ago.5 -
Going to release the biggest feature I have implemented for Product I work on. Change in more than 150 files and it is very very critical.
Wish me luck..3 -
Me: "there's a fatal crash in the build that has gone to testing, this is how we fix it"
Project lead: "they haven't noticed yet, add the feature the boss wants"
Next day, boss:"testing found a fatal crash this morning and couldn't do any testing because of it, how'd it get past you?!" -
This post is kinda late. For those who haven't read my previous rants, a marketing coworker bragged about a feature that we hadn't yet finished. (I'm thinking that they perhaps did it to put extra pressure on the dev team 🤔.) Of course it backfired pretty bad, because this feature was a plug-in for another service, and even though the dev team was on time with the feature, the other service we were writing a plug-in for took _sooo_ long to approve of our code, and it made this marketing guy look so bad in front of these clients because the feature was a few weeks late.
A part of the new feature was that some of their data would be synced with this service. These customers were so important that we couldn't afford to disappoint them, and the solution was... *drumroll please* ... that this marketing guy would have to manually copy the customer's data from the service into our platform to make the customer think this feature is ready. Row by row. I'm hearing it takes about one hour of their day 🤣
I mean I'm good friends with the guy but... they kinda deserved it2 -
@dfox @trogus : Do we have a feature of auto complete @ mentions ? If not, there can be an elegant feature to provide drop down suggestions to mention / tag user in comments after we type @ in comments of any rant ( not all the users , but author of the rant and those who previously commented on that particular rant previously. For example, if I commented on a rant of dfox, and trogus also comments and types @, me and dfox will be in the drop down, tapping on which will select and tag that user on that comment ). I bet users will love this devRant update. Sorry for long post , I don't have any potato :p3

@dfox
No Loading window on Supporters and About us pages.
Or is it a feature for impatient persons like me??2 -
I came home about 1am and saw a bug in a small (unpaid...) project that had to do with timezones (see some earlier rants). Fixed it, got to bed.
A few days later I realized that a feature I implemented before was gone. Going through the git log I found out it was me in that night who removed it, by accident I suppose.
Not the end of the world but I was quite intrigued by my own drunk ability to remove a feature that had nothing to to with what I was doing and not even noticing it.2 -
adding a nightmode feature, i.e prevent access to DevRant after midnight, would be a great idea!
I have to sleep, but I'm addicted.
HELP my precious soul!1 -
Feature request: hierarchical commenting for replies to specific comments within a post to de-clutter the comment section a bit. @dfox @trogus4
-
Remember that big feature we were talking about 6 months ago?
We need it by next Friday for an important demo.
Of course we do.. what else..2 -
@dfox feature request, as part of the menu links in a rant, if you could add open in web version.
Why?
Sometimes links aren't clickable on my devrant version (using latest Android version am on Lollipop 😧)
Sometimes really large images don't load
So I usually copy link then paste in my browser6 -
Feature request: swipe from rant to go back to list of rants. It would be easier than reaching up for the "back" button.7
-
Feature request: Being able to copy text from rants/comments on mobile. Also some sort of code formatting would be nice!2
-
@dfox feature request: Multi-window support for Android Nougat so I can read rants and watch YouTube at the same time.2
-
That moment when you worked with bug 2 days and now it's a feature! I need to drink more coffee because it helps - Ready to do more!
-
!rant
Hmm... so I was thinking...
What if devRant implemented a feature that lets you get rants into some kind of list, accessible via your profile? Kind of like the "Watch later" list on YouTube, or playlists. I know we have a "Favourites" list of rants, already, on devRant, but being organized about this might be a good idea.
What do you think?3 -
The best IDE in the world is becoming even better.
It's strange no one ever thought about this feature before. Simple yet so useful.
#VisualStudio 2022 v17.610 -
Just wasted nearly a day because I got work assigned that has alreay been done half a year ago and nobody knew it.
It's really hard to find a feature to remove, that's already been removed and the truth is only to be found deep within the version control.
FML -
The feeling, when you learn about a new feature of the language, you've used for over 6 months.
The joy of learning something new,cool and useful mixed the pain, of knowing, you could have written your previous projects easier.2 -
Today, a customer complained about a bug. I checked their account: yup, there was a bug. I checked it on my machine... nothing. It took me about an hour to figure out that they were actually just not using the feature correctly. I'd understand this from a stupid customer, but me?! FML2

Feature Request
Be able to see the text of the rant one is commenting on, some of use have difficulty remembering more than 50 lines of text at a time.5 -
The mechanical team once told me, hey I want this feature on the software - sure it will take approx 1 week. Yea I know, but I want it without any bugs.
WTF?? They sure got some f words from me. 😅1 -
I just saw some loan/bank ad that read something around the line "when the budget goes negative, the minus becomes plus" ("Când bugetul dă cu minus, minusul se face plus")
NO, this isn't a feature, it's a bug and it's called "underflow"4 -
!rant
Feature idea:
A way to mark your email message as "doesn't need a response" so you can send a simple "ok, thanks" to the email thread without triggering everyone's Automatic Out of Office Response.1 -
Unexpectedly a feature status changed to disabled:
"It doesnt matter. If nobody noticed, it means that nobody is using it."
After that my point of view is:
Just because you dont use your Car Airbag everyday, it doesnt allow your mechanic to keep it disabled. -
!rant, but a feature request.
@dfox, whenever I use the comment box, it covers the whole screen. So, if I wanna tag somebody in my comment, I gotta close the comment box once, memorize their username since there's no autocomplete on @'s and then type back.
Either the comment box could be shortened, or autocomplete be added to user tag function, which could atleast detect the users commenting on the current thread (since programmers suck at memorising).
What say, DevRanters?5 -
My wish for devrant: click devrant text in navigationbar to refresh and scroll to top of the feed.1
-
The tags disappear from your drafts.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Also I can't scroll through the tag suggestions.
Is it a bug or a feature ? @dfox
(This still happens even after updating the Android App)
I'm using a Lenovo device with Android M.2 -
So I just found out the hard way, that you can't take screenshots, which is great if you want to enforce privacy, but not so great if you want to treasure some of the most awesome comments you find in this community.
Is there a possibility to add a feature like favorite comments?14 -
@dfox Feature request
Can you please give me the option to load the whole rants. I don't want to use the story feature because I want to see all the rants.1 -
@dfox @trogus: feature request: in iOS 10.3, a feature was added where you can customize the app icon on the home screen (see http://theverge.com/2017/3/...). Can DevRant have our avatar as our icon?4
-
Seeing quite a few people post ("bump") just to subscribe to a rant.
would be a neat feature to have a subscribe to rant checkbox :)6 -
Feature request: copy text on double tap or hold on Android. Wanted to save a few quotes, but not as a screenshot... Just an idea :)3
-
@dfox I reccomend adding on devrant a thing calles hide read or similar feature. When I browse devrant there are times most of my feed is stuff I already saw. I want to be able to filter it. A good app that uses well the feature "Hide Read" is Sync for Reddit. Thx!( ^ω^)6
-
Unity has a nice feature where if you search for an item in your hierarchy, it fades to white as if it just crashed.
Thanks for the heart attack, Unity! Maybe this serves as a reminder to save frequently because it *does* crash a lot.3 -
TIL that rants not loading when there's no internet is not a bug but a feature. A friend was going through the phone, and I don't keep mobile data, so he wasn't able know about the wk13 rants. Which is good because that would have destroyed him.
-
A pm asked about a feature I was developing and I went on to show them what I got so far. Feature-wise almost finished, but it still needed to be polished and thoroughly tested, as such it wasn't merged yet. Weeks later - I couldn't finish it yet for unrelated reasons - there was great confusion about why the feature is not there as it had been billed to the customer already. So I gotta pull some sunshine out of my ass and bring it to the last release branch..1

!rant (Feature idea)
Rant Rooms!
Each room has a topic as it's title, and this room acts like a group chat. Individuals can join public rooms and rant about the specified topic. Or, private rooms can be created and the creator can invite people to this room.
Perhaps timeouts could be set so that after a specified amount of time without activity, the room expires and disappears.
Probably a shit idea but figured I'd mention it 😂4 -
Cheated with my beloved 'optimization' to make a go around that fucking bug and then the temporary work around turned out to be nice feature. Great!! 😑 But I am not happy :( fml1
-
Client A asks for Feature A. Devs start working on feature A. Client B comes in asking for Feature B. Management tells us to stop everything that we're doing to work on Feature B. Client C comes in...
We end up having tons of branches with half-finished features, and the product never improves1 -
Feature request: Setting to display whole image on main feed without having to click into the rant :)

Feature request:
Hey!
I think it would be awesome to have a PM system, where you can send personal messages to each other.
I understand that you'd need to integrate blocking and other privacy features, but hey what do you think?3 -
@DevRantDevs could you please add the feature that i can view an image dorectly from the thread wothout loading the rant?
Is maybe someone else interested in this feature?6 -
Will there be a follow user list feature in the future for devRant? Something similar to Twitter's list feature. I have a few friends who have joined but no easy way to view their rants.
Unless the feature is already there and I can't seem to find it?1 -
@dev-rant @dfox @trogus
Feature+bug
I think it would be better for the development of of the app to include a feedback/bug option.
Bug-> I changed my password on a different phone but the current phone didn't ask for the updated password, and logged in.7 -
When client for past few days tells you how important that new feature he wants is, and you should get to it asap.
But then when you actually start working on it after discussing it, specification creation and preparations, with mind set and focused, he tells you:
- 'Know what? I will need that change in the old feature before that. You can postpone the new feature by one day.'
So... How was it the most important thing in the universe again? -
Feature request
Could we have some kind of way to see who created the post in the comments? Like an OP mark or a different color of the name or something?
When reading long quality rants I tend not to notice the username, and then when I'd like to engage in the discussion I have to scroll all the way up to check it.2 -
A feature request -
Autocomplete suggestions when tagging someone.
It makes it so annoying to tag someone exactly how they spell their username. -
Stop posting feature requests. Go to the hamburger menu and select 'About'. You'll find the email address for ideas in there.3
-
Edit feature has* arrived, now I can fix my spelling instead of replying and ragging about autocorrect!
-
Spending the morning adding a feature. Only discover that it can be satisfy with current features, when I finished it. I think I will call it a hidden feature now.
-
I know it would be against devRant's simple UI and mechanism, but I'd love a Quote/Jump To Quote feature.1
-
Just when I think I have finished all tasks for implementing a feature, there comes along the way a set of additional subtasks blowing the estimated deadlines by a pretty long shot.

So many years ago while I was in college learning to code and interning as a developer working on a javascript based image designer. We were learning event handlers in class and I was learning how to work with jQuery.
So I decided to build an event handlers to move objects by key press. I had an afternoon free and dont remember merging it to the codebase.
A few months later, something was pushed that took key press the event handler and the testers complained about losing the event handler I made.
End of the story, I added a feature that is still being used because I wanted to learn how to do something. -
Didn't know Android had such a Feature.
I know it's possible using OCR tools, but still, it's amazing.

@dfox Feature request: could you add the "pull down to refresh" feature to the notifs and rant windows please? xox2
-
@dfox
I recently posted a rant containing the tag "$" (php, you know).
But if I search rants with the search pattern "$", the search returns no results.
I guess this has something todo with $ as a special character ;)
Is it a bug or is it a feature? *g*7 -
!rant
I want to suggest a feature that can help/encourage people to post rants more openly on devRant.
How about anonymous posts, like on Quora?
Pardon me if this feature request is already raised.2 -
Came across a new definition of the word "Implemented" in work today. As far as I can tell, it can be most accurately explained as:
When 1 or more people think about the feature and record a thought about it, without actually delivering anything. -
The "Unofficial" Random Rant Feature is Here.
Just visit https://is.gd/rants
Source: https://gist.github.com/theabbie/...
Inspired from these issues

If it breaks, just let me know here.31 -
You know what feature about macOS I just don't get? Notification center. I don't know what it is about it, but it just seems kinda out of place. Maybe because an app's notifications aren't cleared when it's opened? It's just not a feature I use.2
-
Is there anything like a reverse search engine, that let's you enter e.g. some js code and it tells you what language feature has been used? Imagine you see syntax you've never used before and don't know what it's called or what it does but would like to know more about it.7
-
The random feature request using buzzwords
Can we have picture-in-picture mode for devrant?
Ok I will rest in peace now good night!1 -
Your project is never complete. There will always be one business guy who'll report a feature as a bug.
-
Manager: Oh, this feature freeze you where talking about was no joke?
Me: Yes, that's why we have written it into the protocol of the Last Meeting and everyone agreed...
Manager: Thats nonsense, add more Features! -
I fucking hate how big companies advertise their BIG NEW FEATURE as innovation and jump two major versions because of this...
New update:
UPDATE FROM 2.1.1 TO 4.1!!!
YOU CAN NOW ROTATE THE DISPLAY IN THE OPTIONS SCREEN AND IT ALSO ROTATES ITS VIEW.
WTF?!?!7 -
I expected to need the better part of an hour for a feature.
Here I am, two days later, still trying to figure out a solution. Turns out, there is a lot more complexity to it than I anticipated. -
>People ranting about Whatsapp not adding features
>Whatsapp adds a feature
>People ranting about the feature whatsapp have just add
And this happen all the fucking time. When the double-check turned blue and in almost all major improvement they've made
Am I the only one who likes the new feature?
Peace guys, I don't want to start a telegram vs Whatsapp war here :P3 -
That feeling when the feature your team developed needs to be transferred to the other site team. Someone's taking our baby 😭.
-
I hate when a developer doesn't know how to use git. He never asks for advice or help until has pushes his changes up and creates a mess out of the main branch instead of creating his own feature branch. I mean there is no problem if you don't know how to use git, but you have a real problem if you say you know how to use it just to "look normal and experienced" and in reality you just don't know how to do stuff there. Just ask for help... and then if you create a mess out of git... Well, solve it and learn.2
-
Can anyone suggest any websites or resources for a breakdown of how to handle requests for features or handling bugs. Basically, I want some kind of background on best practices for managing the process of receiving a feature request/or bug report from a user to it reaching the dev team, to production/user acceptance testing.5
-
I’m back for round two!
Anyone else have to use Feature Switches in their codebase, and if you do, what do you think?3 -
Sometimes I just have a crazy idea for an amazing feature I could add to a side project.
Then my brain goes into a fight with itself over this feature, one side saying "that's a lot of work, not worth it" and the other side "but then we could also do this and that and hey maybe we could even simplify other stuff a little bit" and in the process getting really fond of that feature. After some time, the idea is really optimized because the lazy side of my brain hates unnecessary work.
Anyway, I just came home, created a new branch and deleted a quarter of my code base which is now obsolete. -
A “do not disturb” timer in devRant would be nice, wouldn’t it?
At night it’s not a problem but I’m checking devRant 100x a day during business hours🤷♂️
Just a random thought..11 -
Don’t have any Laptop Stickers but do have stickers on my Roller Derby Helmet, and my fav has to be:
“It’s not a bug it’s a feature!”1 -
Debugging a feature that has a reciprocal effect on an other feature is like being given the task to make a toggle switch perfectly flat.
"Oh look, I fixed that bug in feature A. But fuck, now there is a bug in feature B. Perfect, now the bug in feature B is gone. Ah crap now feature A is broken again"
FML -
I wish we can re-share ( retweet ) some rants and stories on devrant. Like it's a need more than a feature.8

Can we bring into discussion inline monospaced code snippets again?

When you click the notif of "more comments on a rant you commented", could it scroll down to the bottom?
Preferrably to the last comment you saw but that would require some more tracking3 -
Feature request: please allow the app to work in landscape and rotate. I can't get to the hamburger menu in bottom right due to broken screen3

Is there a way to add support for dual messenger feature for Samsung phones?
I can't find any api for this2 -
That moment when you need to add a feature to your very old app, but have no idea where to begin from
... *me now* -
Bugs: These are not bed bugs. For programmer they are a nightmare, to customer we introduce them as a new feature and say, “My software has no bug. It just develops random features.”

Auto Login feature enables itself when a certain config flag is present - the app will login as an admin without requiring username or password.
I pray to the Continuous Deployment monsters that the config setting never gets copied to production by mistake.2 -
Feature request:
OP gets ++s for different stages of comment amount.
E.g.:
5 comments = 1++
10 comments = 2++
20 comments = 4++
40 comments = 8++
...
;)15 -
I dont know if its a feature or bug or just me, but if i go on someone's profile and scroll down to check the rants, i cant scroll up trough the top last rant. It stops exactly, when i reach the bar (rants, ++, comments, etc..). I have to click or touch this bar at least ones to come over it, to scroll further up to the profile description, pic etc.
ps: I'm using an galaxy s7 with Nougat7 -
I was just thinking that bookmarking a rant could be a good feature for this community. 😁
I came across some rants with info I wanted to check later, but no way to save the rant anywhere. I just saved the links to a text file for now.2 -
devRant feature request
Double tap to zoom into pictures. Would make it a whole lot easier to just browse with one hand.1 -
Sorry in advance if it's not the right kind of post
I was thinking about a feature that will ease the interaction between people
Can a ignore/mute option like the one in dota 2 be a thing in devrant ?
Like once i ignore someone, i dont see any of his messages ever in any topic
It's mostly a user side filter thing
This way everyone can speak without the drama that come with conflictual subjects
The offender can still speak his mind and everyone expect those who ignored him can see his messages
The user who ignored someone can still live in a fairytale feed where he see things that wont trigger him
Win win 🤔3 -
FEATURE REQUEST
that thing that devrantron does where it interprets html
yeah i want everything to do that
pretty sure lots of others wouldn't mind that either3 -
Request:
Do not handover project to client before deadline.
They will ask to add minor feature that will cause major bugs.
Happened with me🙄1 -
feature request / suggestion / wish:
i would love to "reblog" posts, or any other way they will be visible in my profile ("mark as favorite", "star"...).
the idea behind it is to have a nice little collection of posts i want to keep available to me.
i even have a suggestion for naming the action: "inherit post" ;)
hopefully i did not just miss an already implemented feature :P4 -
Fixing a pretty serious bug affecting a core functionality but that no one has noticed and no one will thank you for fixing
OR
Continue working on your feature2 -
Feature request: pasting in images!
In current android version we cannot add jifs from our keyboards, or paste in the screenshot we just took.
Downloading every reaction/meme gif is lamer than just letting your keyboard do it. Anyway, it could be useful or not idk lol7 -
Try playing T-Rex game in chrome with dark mode enabled. For me, this looks like a bug, but maybe it's a feature!1
-
Feature Request: Make the Time-Selection (Day, Week, ..) swipable. The Tabbar is badly position in the top when using a large phone. Better would be that the whole page is swipable from left to right.3

Show the profile of the rant poster17 -
Feature Request:
We can now categorise rants we post, please let us filter rants in the feed by category.5 -
It will be better if posting a rant or especially commenting saves the post until submited or cleared. That way you can check to what you are responding. Or whe you search for an image or gif.

Is firebase remote config a good option for feature-flags/toggles for our development flow of team?2

DEVRANT FEATURE REQUEST
@dfox It would be a real time saver if DevRant app remembers the rant I was reading and saving me a time to scroll down to the last rant. :)3 -
Today " It's not a bug it's a feature" became true. Had an escalation where user reported as a bug. Team came up with an answer they couldn't resist to accept it as a feature. 😎1
-
@dfox, feature idea.
We should be able to make lists or rants, just like Twitter lists. Then people can have a "read later" list or use the lists to rank their favorite rants.1 -
Just a Thought
We are not creating any feature
We are just directly implementing bug/error at first place and resolving/fixing that thing with adding more code to it1 -
We use a bamboo cutting board in the kitchen. Sometimes it's bent a little through the middle and sometimes it's straight. I still don't know if it's a bug or feature.
-
Juggling between multiple feature releases is a difficult task but I would choose that anytime over doing no work the entire day.
P.S. Managing each features individual branches is a task in itself too
