How did I learn how to program?
I didn't. I'm still learning ☺.
We will never be done learning.
That's the beauty of it all.3 -
!Rant Read this somewhere on the internet.
Machine learning is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it...4 -
When you hack someone's computer and you notice that they are hacking someone else computer...and you just sit there to see how they do it. #learning4

I'm a week into my new job right now. What do I love the most about it?
Learning things all day long and getting paid for it!
I'm learning about hosting things, DNS, cyber security, configurations, Linux (although my current skill set with Linux has been enough for now) and so on!
Hell, easy day today (not that many tickets) so decided to start learning Ansible! Next to that I've gotta learn vim (it just autocorrected that to cum.... O.o), work with hosting panels, mail stuffs (dns, debugging etc etc) and so fucking on.
The boss hasn't been at location yet which will happen tomorrow but he seemed like a very chill guy.
I love this!21 -
I'm proud to announce a new project made by myself and @thejohnhoffer, that started on devrant.
We started collaborating after I made a rant about machine learning and, since then we've been working hard on a plain language blog that simplifies machine learning concepts.
We call it learn-blog.
Check it out at ironman5366.github.io/learn-blog15 -
My mom is trying to convince me that being good at Latin is more important than knowing how to program / spending time learning it.15
-
Still not learning git properly. I still find it very hard to grasp how this works and although I'm starting to use it more and more, I just can't wrap my hear around it so I often reside to scp for upload and no version control at all.
:'(34 -
if i learned one thing from my internship it's "Just do it".
I always wanted to master parallax but didn't dare to. My boss then forced me into learning it. I made my own parallax script that day.4 -
When i started learning CSS I thought `!important` will put the property's precedence to the lowest possible level, because, you know, I thought it means "not important".3
-
Found an old monitor in our garage and decided to hook it up to my laptop. Yes, I am learning how to use Linux :D10
-
Have to do a programming task in 6 days, for an internship I applied for.
Have no clue how to do it. Guess I'll have a nice week learning stuff 😁5 -
Everyone has something to learn and teach. Start up a blog, submit to conference proposals, etc. If you're learning it then someone else has to learn it in the future, so make it easier for them.1
-
I love learning new and exciting technologies, but I hate that it makes me want to rewrite half of my projects.3
-
I fucked up my brain while learning brainfuck! 😣
Edit: And yeah, I still don't know how to use it...6 -
True story.
Some clients (especially in India) don't want to pay, but they want everything to be implemented in the project.
Big data.... Check
Machine learning.... Check
Deep learning..... Check
Espresso maker.... Check.
They want all the buzz words that are buzzing to be put in your project and they want you to put it in the 'cloud', for which you have to pay.....10 -
Started learning vim... It feels like a DIY IDE where you have to find half of the parts on the internet...7
-
Nice learning experience from Spotify. If a survey response might contain negative feedback, just don't allow it to submit.
Clever Spotify ;)2 -
Learning to code at the University was quite annoying in the beginning. We had to write code on paper.
Might be the usual way, yet it was really inconvenient.25 -
I love coming back to old code from when I was learning a new language and cleaning it up/making it better. It confirms that’s I’ve learned something :)4
-
Why does it feel like learning to code requires a building of endurance? Like training for a marathon, you have to build up to bigger and deeper learning sessions. Rewarding and frustrating at the same time.25
-
Finished learning the basics of HTML. Now to move onto CSS! Really enjoy learning Web Development despite it only being the basics.10
-
Update on myFacebook/Meta interview:
Got rejected. lol
The first interviewer was a dick to me and I sensed it since he kept pushing me back a lot and wanted things his way.
But anyway, it was a nice learning experience for me. I spent more time on preparing for them then I should have. No regrets though.
Life learning.30 -
*Goes for an interview*
Interviewer reads my resume and goes on to say : "You are the first person today, whose resume doesn't include 'machine learning' ".
Me : *Points towards Machine Learning written in my resume* Sir here it is.
We both have a good laugh about it.
That day i realised that EVERYONE is 'learning' machine learning. EVERYONE.4 -
Best time to learn something new?
-Now
Best way to learn something new?
-By doing it. Practice makes perfect.
I wasted so much time and never got anywhere because I wanted to get it right. Fucking up is part of the learning process.2 -
Not caring about other people at university. Setting my own pace when it comes to learning had a huge impact on my mental health.1
-
Coolest project I've worked on. Artistic.af machine learning + Instagram makes your images artistic AF. Did it as a side project to get up to speed on NN implementations on GPUs2
-
Wordpress.
In my opinion you have to be a psychopath to actually like learning WP at all.
It makes me wanna jump off the closest bridge, taking a header.4 -
Having a baby while starting an IT company and learning IT at the same time.
Found myself crying and swinging a bat, listening to Limp Bizkit as i remembered what it felt to be 13 and being made fun of coz i hadn't kissed a girl yet.8 -
when you actually start to understand something, that topic seems easier than you thought it was before learning
-
Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6 -
Top reason not to be a dev:
If you can't stand it when the computer does EXACTLY what you told it to, and don't have the patience, curiosity, and interest learning how to make it do the thing you wanted in the first place. 🙂1 -
Mechanical Engineer friend took Machine Learning as an elective subject in college thinking that it had something to do with the Physical machines.
His reaction during the class was priceless.3 -
I've realized I'm so busy working with technology, I don't have time left to keep learning it and playing with it. What are some fun ways you all keep learning new things and staying engaged?17
-
It is kinda sad to see some software that looks quite promising, and when I check how-to-deploy crap it is only;
"Copy and paste this shit to make it work"
People are not learning anything.2 -
Learning to use Singletons in Java. Then reading online that it might be an antipattern. Software Engineering ... 👌10
-
Been encountering way too many people who say that "Programming is easy" or "Learning to code is easy".
Like, yeah mother fucker we have education curriculums to teach kids. But that's not all there is to it.
This has the same energy as someone saying "math is easy" after learning 2+2=4. There's more a lot more to it dude.7 -
When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1
-
You a front end dev?
Try sass or less, you will love it,
You will never be able to go back to css
😂
Please up vote after learning16 -
Literally no work to do. Learning Ruby to fill the time. Forgot how fun it is to learn new things!4
-
Someone asked me how I learned to program. And I realized it was a series of telling a client "No that's not possible" then finding out it is, on Stackoverflow... And learning how to do it1
-
Cousin: So what are you learning at school?
Me: Programming, PC Networks, Hardware and so on.
Cousin: Oh really? I just have to make presentation to school. I will send it to your account thanks I appreciate it... 🤔6 -
As someone who learns everything alone , researching and all it really frustrates the fuck out of me to have to babysit grown ass adults into learning anything.3
-
I had to make Google forms but it got boring after sometime (with drag and drop). So, I ended up learning regex. Phew! That was little hard.4
-
*at work*
co-worker: what are u doing?
me: programming and learning
co-worker: but school has just started... u guys havent learnt anything yet
me: thats the great thing about programming, everything is already in the internet waiting to be read and learned. try it next time ;)
co-worker: learning out of school, no thanks4 -
life is too short to spend it by learning all the time and not actually enjoying to be alive.

People learning to code who seems to have more interest in that their code works than in why it works. Do yourself a favour and learn something you have an interest in.2
-
Started learning js 5 days ago.
Its so trash and all over the place which makes it able to do anything in weird ways
Not sure if I like it. I miss java.13 -
I always thought callback functions are some mysterious things that high end devs understand. After learning it I feel to stupid now. 😭3
-
The trick to balancing social and dev life life is training a deep learning algorithm to the point it gains sentience and the ability to feel real human emotions and becomes your best bud until it ultimately decides it would rather catalog images of mustard bottles.
-
I just learned about the glorious language called batsh. It compiles, to bat and bash.
Considering learning OCaml to contribute, this is the holy grail that will bind us all together.4 -
Started learning PHP bcuz @dfox loves it. Why not me?
(instantly)
WHY IS THERE SO MANY -> SIGNS???????
IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE AN ARROW AT ALL!!!!!!!!
IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST --> TO LOOK BETTER!!!!!
UUUURRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
(stops learning a few hours ago, got a refund)
(curses david)6 -
I started programming when I was 18. Now I am 22 and I am programming Machine learning and and AI.
You don’t have to start when your 10 to be the best at it...6 -
Why the php hate?
Just started learning it today and it seems really powerful and pretty simple, I’m excited to learn more..10 -
Let's write an AI to be our next president. With machine learning, we can just train it with a bunch of history books.5
-
I'm dong it again:
Just learning Python to teach it to someone else.
P.s. I always knew that my hatred of Python was not out of my mere ignorance.17 -
I'm starting to think that "Machine Learning" is the most unfortunate term that the industry has ever seen.
How people approach a problem here where I work: "I have a problem, I don't know how to solve it, I don't have any data. Let's implement a Machine Learning algorithm that will solve the problem for me."4 -
Pro Tip: Add a technology that you want to learn to your resume and send it in order to stop procrastinating learning it
-
Today's the day, I'm learning how to use Docker for local web development. It only took ~4 years to get the gumption.14
-
Anyone have the experience where you are learning a new programming language and you are eager to do stuff with it but you need to use another one for your job? So frustrating!2
-
So me and my friend started doing a video game project. To be honest I was expecting it to be nothing but pain and suffer.
But it turned out to be really fun experience for both of us (plus I’m learning Unity) 😁 -
Ladies and gents,
It feels amazing to learn a new language. I feel like a French guy learning Swahili with ease. Or a game mod creator turning on God mode.2 -
My first rant here, I just found out about it, I don't have much of programming background, but it always triggeredmy intetest, currently I am learning many tools, my aim is to become a data scientist, I have done SAS, R, Python for it (not proficient yet though), also working on google cloud computing, database resources and going to start Machine Learning (Andrew Ng's Coursera).
Can anybody advice me, Am I doing it right or not.?2 -
It's one of those days where I just need to let it it out. I'M A FUCKING IMPOSTER.
but I'm going to keep learning anyway. 👺2 -
10 years ago I was learning how to program in college,
Now working in IT company I stare at Excel Sheets and scratch my head.
#10yearschallenge -
How many of you know how to type without looking at a keyboard ?
I wanna learn it.
Any suggestions to speed up the learning process ?22 -
When learning new tech, it takes me forever to get the environment/dependencies setup because of the million different errors I get.
Am I just too dumb to follow installation instructions?1 -
Hello, I'm a teenager and I want to become a Software Developer/Software Engineer/Product Engineer, I want to know how to start, what do I need to start learning, I have some knowledge of Javascript and I don't know if should learning Python or Java and where to learn it, please if somebody can answer those questions it would be great help and I would really appreciate it.
PS: I think I may need a mentor, if someone wants to help me my Discord is: patrik1126 -
I have so much learning and projects I'm really excited to start. Now if only I can find the time for it.. 😓2
-
I am learning angular. As a beginner, I feel there is too much fiddling with this thing :-( ...anyway, I guess when you are used to it and understand why everything is the way it is it becomes normal and understandable.9
-
Hey guys, does someone knows if Twitter colludes with other websites and/or services to collect data, because I thought that privacy-wise, Twitter wasn’t as bad as Facebook as I just use Twitter to follow youtubers and Donald Trump(to keep up with his craziness) and never post anything. But I just got a Python Machine Learning ad just. And it’s spooky because I’m currently (trying to be) learning Deep Learning and Google knows it (🤬🤬 you udemy ads) but Twitter!!?? Do they have a way to link my account??6
-
It completely changed the course of my life!
I started learning to code because I was curious how mobile apps works. I blew through my self guided learning and needed more. Flash forward two years and I am working as a web developer! My projects are challenging but I've been learning insanely fast and I can't wait to see where I am two years from now. -
I decided to start learning about hadoop... I found a great, free tutorial, but it expects me to know python. ...well it looks like I'm learning two things at once.2
-
So with my current windows heavy workload it is with a heavy heart that I commit to learning powershell. Wish me luck6
-
Apparently my learning style is more rote memorization than learn-by-doing and I've been trying to learn by doing for years as a hobbyist.
It took a fucking *national quarantine* to get me to try something different and I'm blown away.
What would have taken me many months to learn I've all but grasped in detail in a matter of 20 hours of study over the course of a week.
Fuck you javascript. I WIN THIS ROUND. No more looking at the documentation for stupid shit like how to write a regex, or why everything is wrapped in fucking parenthesis (IIFE), or why
I keep getting a uncaught reference exception.
The important thing to realize about learning is NEVER be obstinate about it. Try many things, and don't get stuck in one way of learning unless you know thats what works for you.
This is why having study partners and mentors are important.
I think experience/practice and rote learning work in tandem. Rote learning lets you skip the much longer step of grasping the fundamentals, bootstrapping the process of learning the abstractions that are composed of those fundamentals.
I'm still adding cards to my anki flash card deck, but if anyone wants it I'm willing to share. It's mostly just 1. practice questions, 2. detail questions (what are the types? What does this regex do?, etc), 3. implication questions (heres this bit of code. It's XYZ, why did it fail? Correct it.), combining core details to memorize, and the application of the facts learned.
It helped me to learn and I'm apparently retarded, so if you're new to programming and want to learn JS, it can probably help you too. Unless you're more of a tard than me lol.1 -
First time having Baileys and it does not taste like 17% alcohol. But it tastes good enough to get drunk before learning for exams in the next weeks7
-
!rant First code review in the new team, came back with list of helpful suggestions and constructive criticisms. Yep I'm going to like it here. Excited to be learning from the bests.
-
Learning C and just wrote a function to reverse chars in a char array (ex. "Hello" -> "olleH") but the array did not change.
It took me way to long to realize: I forgot to divide the length variable by two. So it reversed the array back everytime...6 -
(Apprentice dev)
Cut me some slack ;)
Learning JavaScript for a few days To a week to familiarise myself with it and really get to grips with it.
Then have to go on to jQuery which is a lot a fun I must say, very easy structured framework to learn and found myself getting really engrossed into it.
Now for the past few days I've been learning angular1 which is a really cool framework, can be a little bit complicated at times but it is learnable
Moral of the story is you never stop learning! Which isn't a bad thing by the way I'm finding web developing a lot of fun!7 -
It's been 5 years this month since I started learning programming, getting interested after learning about Linux, wanting to do operating systems and games.
I started with C++, went on to C and assembly language for about 2 years and gave up on it for the most part.
Afterward did Java for two years and hated every second of it! Switched to Python instead (been using it since 2.7.5).
Now I do Haskell and JavaScript and those languages do everything so much easier I can never see myself ever going back!2 -
Fuck, is it worth learning PHP and WordPress to actually get freelance jobs? Everything I find is in fucking WordPress and I just need to make some fucking money6
-
Learning to code is like learning to write when you were younger. It can be sloppy or clean but if you keep at it it'll probably become clean. But, with these sites like code academy that accept only one solution to the problems they present it's as though you're being told that everything you're doing is wrong eventhough you get a solution to the problem in the end. It bugs me that these sites want people to code the exact same way.
-
Learning tmux is making me regret finding gnu screen first.
On a related question, can anyone point me to descent resources to learn it tmux?6 -
Started off in College learning the basic Java and C#. That was enough to land my first internship, during that internship I'd go home each night and teach myself whatever I needed to know to get through the next day.
Within a year I became the project lead on an API for my groups application.
1. Fake it till you make it.
2. Act like you've been there before.
3. Never stop learning.1 -
Java Vs. C++
Ok, so I know a bit of Java, still lots to learn but isn't there always! My question to all you poly-linguist programmers is; once you know the basics of OOP are there any obvious hurdles in learning new languages? For instance - do you sometimes accidentally use some Java in C++? Would you all advise to stick to one language and learn it to genius level or does it make you a better programmer to understand a multitude of languages?
<Learning Rant>9 -
Is it okay for software engineers like us to go out to eat every day? I just don’t find the time to cook for myself. And honestly the time spent cooking would be better spent learning (judging by our hourly rate). Do you think it’s okay for devs to have such a luxurious life style (eating out is a privilege!) because our minds are so taxed on learning and creating?4
-
Having a vodka and coke and trying to learn how to use a JSON api on a android app (also learning that). I'm sure it will go well.2
-
Recently I've been learning Rust & I wanted to make something useful. So, I made a Jenkins alternative. It is currently being used in our company, which feels good. So far its working great.
& I wouldn't necessaily say I'm "proud" of it, but rather I'm "thankful" that I was able to do that. Cause, Rust is pretty popular for its steep learning curve & thinking of making something like Jenkins with Rust before actually learning Rust takes a lot of courage8 -
Wk26:
The moment you feel you've stopped learning find a new challenge. If changing jobs is scary pick up a side project, but if you're not enjoying or learning from your job, it might be time to move on.2 -
I'm always learning. That way it becomes funny to me. And also coffee. So fucking much coffee. Alcohol helps a lot too.

Studying multimedia developer course Class year one learning HTML.
Build this with tables and inline styles....
Assignment was clearly written and you where able to copy past most of it.
I was like fuuu. I build it in CSS and external style sheet.
Time set for assignment 4 days, time used: 3 hours.
This was in 2008......
I hope now for you students out there that it has changed and you are learning proper coding and are correctly challenged3 -
What is the scope of Meteor? Does it have a steep learning curve? I'm planning to build a cross platform app (web + mobile).2
-
I've been meaning to work with the Spotify's Python API 'Spotipy'. Any good suggestions to make anything cool with it? Can include Machine Learning, IOT, etc.7

I remember learning how to program 5-6 years ago. It was completely broken. All of these “courses” just teach the syntax of a language. They usually don’t even teach how it works or what it’s used for. Knowing the syntax is great and all, but what’s important is learning to apply it to solve problems.
A lot of other basic things are often overlooked as well. For example, introducing a text editor and the command line would have been incredibly valuable.
For a long while I was using online editors and logging the output of functions instead of actually making projects.
I’m glad I kind of created my own way of learning: by making projects. Just hopping into something was the best way to learn from me. If I got stuck, I’d simply look it up. As a result, I was able to actually apply my skills to learn. -
Just figured out an interesting fact ..
While learning to code it sometimes gets complicated to differentiate between learning and copying codes..2 -
I get it — it’s not fashionable to be part of the overly enthusiastic, hype-drunk crowd of deep learning evangelists, who think import keras is the leap for every hurdle.
-
Started learning React recently cause the job I applied for reqires it.
So far so bad.
I...I don't get it.
It might be that I'm just starting out, but I can't see any practical use for it. I don't GET it.
Ugh..never been this frustrated (which I'm guessing isn't helping the learning process.)
Gonna have to wing the shit outta that interview.7 -
Learning aws for months, not enough the company needs to use azure. Learning azure for several months, not enough the company needs to use gcp. Learning gcp for several months, not enough the company needs to use oracle.
When does all of this bullshit ever fucking stop? No matter how much i learn and what i learn it seems like its never good enough. Or its never enough. Its very discouraging. The more i learn the more it appears as if i know nothing16 -
As a linux and hacking beginner, I am amazed how much I learn about linux while looking for ways to solve hacking challenges.
It is like learning something while learning some other thing. (Yeah I like learning)7 -
!rant.
I must say I love learning new things!!! Took a quick detour to build a small custom music player, now it doesn't seem to be that quick as I am learning a new framework. Only about 11 pages of many more still to go, and the funny thing? The main part I need - how to play audio, is in the last section of the tutorials. -
Teachers. We put so much effort in learning, I think it's only fair that you know what you teach. You are supposed to simplify our learning process not make it worse. We don't need a lecture hour to read your ppts.1
-
learning a different language can be difficult sometimes. since i already know other languages, i get them mixed up. putting semicolons, putting spaces even though i shouldnt, putting parenthesis or even forgetting some keywords because in another language, its not necessary. makes it difficult to adjust to the new syntax. but the fun part of learning is having more knowledge and experience.4
-
I finally get it. Symfony: The Fast Track (https://symfony.com/doc/6.0/...) is not supposed to be a learning tool.
It's an elaborate joke! Now it all makes sense.1 -
TensorFlow, because it makes machine learning accessible to everyone.. and.. well, it gave birth to my Android counterpart <3
-
i want to start learning C but i dont know what book to get , can anyone advice any books or source that will help me learn it !8
-
whats your biggest aha-experience learning about programming? mine was probably finally realizing what an orm does and how it eliminates your need need to write sql manually10
-
so that's how it is... 2,500 seats and no place for me... I don't blame anyone, just sad about it 😭
'Google and Udacity have developed a variety of free learning resources for you'... yeah of course, no need to apply to the scholarship because you provide free learning resources???1 -
Does anyone know any good resources for learning Lua?
(And possibly how to use it with games by Valve (e.g. TF2, GMod, CS:GO)?)2 -
I am partially self taught and partially book taught.
The self taught part involved viewing the source of websites and learning HTML that way.
The book part comes from when I worked at a .COM startup in their customer service dept while learning HTML. I mentioned it to the IT Director and he threw a ColdFusion book at me and told me to learn it and I could move to the IT dept. Needless to say, I haven't done customer service work since.3 -
When you are learning to use network services by building a twitter app, and can't get it to work for 4 hours straight because you spelled Authorize wrong...2

!First rant
Started learning C programming through CS50 course.
Hello world?nope.too scared to write the program because everytime I write it, something or the other happens and I stop learning C5 -
Anyone else experience "coder's block"?
No, this is not burn out. I've been learning alot of cool new stuff lately...but no clue what to start doing with it.1 -
Trial and error.
Taking an existing code base and playing with it to see what does what. Eventually learning enough to create basic programs. Eventually I wanted to make more complicated things so started reading documentation. -
Family support for becoming a dev?
HA! None at all.
Well, to be fair, my parents bought their first a PC in 1996 for learning how to use it and to write documents for business.
So it was a rather passive support, if at all.1 -
Just learned about the Colemak keyboard layout, might bother learning it I don't know I'm already learning Dvorak out of bordom so why not, but their site brought up something random in my mind,
Who actually uses caps lock for caps lock. I've been using keyboards since elementary school 15-16 years ago and I haven't used caps lock since I've learned that the shift button capitalizes letters too and I don't have to remember to turn it off, I just release the button.
I hate that I never thought to remap it to something useful like colemak does, so even if I don't end up learning it, I can at least thank it for the idea to change caps lock to be useful3 -
A machine learning project I've been working on but can't seem to make any progress on... It just won't learn gahhhhhhhhh
-
Finish at least one thing I started in 2021
* Learning Latin
* Learning Unity
* Learning Flutter
* Working on a personal app idea
God, why is it so hard to follow through with something I started? :/14 -
Hey guys,
i just started learning HTML. so far it is going well alone which language to learn is the easiest after this?
Thanks in advance!22 -
Tried learning a new language to add to my CV, guess I haven't got it in me.
Fluent in google translate will have to do for now.2 -
So I'm gonna be honest. I dont know git. I do plan on learning it but I'm waiting to learn how to use it. But I'm seeing all this stuff about it on here could someone explain what it is and its function?6
-
Hey everyone my name is nixon. I'm very new to programming. I jUst started learning go, because I'm planning on becoming a blockchain developer. It's been a little tough learning go. Do you guys have any advice or suggestions for me? I feel like I'm not getting it as fast.5
-
Not going insane due to lack of documentation.
In retrospect it may have been that I was still learning to properly apply and read docs so eh.3 -

"is Kotlin worth learning? React or Vue or Angular? Is Flutter worth learning?"
Is devRant a search engine? I can't be the only one tired of these posts. It is also very tilting seeing the responses to a yes being "okay, I will research it".
Bitch, you're supposed to research it from the get go. devRant is not the preliminary to doing a fucking Google search.
I feel it is almost equivalent to asking a coworker before actually googling it (which I admit I sometimes catch myself doing).6 -
I recently read that great programmers care more about algorithms than code. I hope I can find more time to devote to learning algorithms than spending it on yet another framework. #springboot.js1
-
I remember when I first heard about the general concept of a stack, I wasn't quite sure how you would use it.
Now im learning about stacks in java algorithms class as well as learning about how the memory stack works in assembly class. This probably seems small to you pro devs, but ngl, it kinda blew my mind how useful this structure can be.1 -
My current dev dream is to move away from JS based hybrid mobile development...
Guess I need to get back to learning Dart and Flutter hey? (: Because, well, fuck Cordova.. fuck it with `rusty-barge-pole.js`.2 -
Learning how to leaning. It is not emphasized enough in work place. Reading, speeding, read code, speed reading code. Comprehension of code, grit, growing mind set.
-
Is it okay to learn Perl and Ruby?
As I'm a networking guy and i want to write exploits of my own.
I have already been learning Perl and writing scripts.
I just want to know is it worth it in this era to learn these languages?8 -
So I started my frontend framework learning by getting to learn Vue. Now, like, a year later, and after I've got a ton of experience with Vue, having written numerous apps with it and earned some $$$$, I'm learning React. Just because of, yeah, react-native. I feel like a caveman just by writing all that annoying overhead. :/8

I guess it all started for me in the summer of 8th grade when I was 14. I saw all these javascript snippets for invisionfree forums, started learning javascript and html. later on I went into php development to make a arcade, it was pretty cool learning experience cause it used curl to login with invisionfree forums. a few years after that I got into c++ and I knew programing was what I was going to do the rest of my life cause there's no end to it

Anyone know of OSSU? It seems cool, but I don't know anyone that has any experience with it. Would be doing it part time to fill all the gaps of my self learning journey5

While learning a new platform online, adding several links to the bookmarks, oh that's nice I'll add that too, hey that could be helpful later 'click'.
Done learning after 2 months, pressing on the relevant bookmarks folder..... "Open all (289)?" damnit need another few weeks to clear it up and filter, ending with even more bookmarks.... -
Easily machine learning. A lot of stuff thst was bevore thought to be impossible or just plain was to hard suddenly gets reachable. My fav example is the dota ai. Just love it

I'd like to create an imageboard app with React-Native and got a few questions.
Every user has to like or dislike the shown content to advance to the next image/video (tinder style). I want to use that data to feed a machine learning algorithm and generate an unique selection of displayed media for each user with that.
Even though I never used it yet before (I'm still learning to code) I want to use python and a python machine learning library for that.
Can you give me any advice for the python part? For example which library to use, where to start, etc. .
Do you think that might be an interesting idea to realize? :)2 -
tell me..?

The problem with college is that it makes you feel like it's the be-all, end-all of learning. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you want to succeed, you must never, ever stop learning.

I am having a fun time learning Angular. It’s way different from React.
I do like the css scoping a lot. Also it’s strange to not have to deal with state.
I am learning it because I see the job market requiring it as opposed to React.
Any React peeps feel me?3 -
I'd like to Dockerize our Node.js webapp at work, though I've never worked with any form of containerization software. Has anyone got any good resources for learning it? Should I also be learning Kubernetes?10

Is learning VIM worth it?
I have some (probably unjustified) prejudices to it - I find it rather visually unattractive. But it seems to me also that it boosts productivity.
So do you recommend it and what is least painful way to learn it?5 -
I started learning programming in college. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do but it sounded like I would enjoy it. And I was right!
-
started learning react earlier today via codecademy - absolutely fantastic setup and explanations. Would recommend.
Now to get my other developer to learn it as well. -
Learning to tech to speed up learning.
Using a new cooperative learning technique, AI Lab researchers cut by half the time it took a pair of robot agents to learn to maneuver to opposite sides of a virtual room.
A combination of deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms are responsible for computers achieving dominance at challenging board games like chess and Go, a growing number of video games, including Ms. Pac-Man, and some card games, including poker. But for all the progress, computers still get stuck the closer a game resembles real life, with hidden information, multiple players, continuous play, and a mix of short and long-term rewards that make computing the optimal move hopelessly complex.

JUST when i thought i learned everything in X language, i accidentally discover a whole new dimension about it i never knew existed. this fucking irritates me. Fuck youuu
if you tell me i shouldn't be mad because i would just be learning more, Fuck youu tooo
i dont have infinite amount of Fucking time
I have to go forward and finish stuff and not just endlessly keep learning and learning and learning and BOOM SHIT IM 80 YEARS OLD ALREADY
Fuck youuuu
The point of fucking learning is not to continue learning even after u learned the point is to stop and apply what you learned in the real world
this is the same shit as a greedy person would chase money.
• if you gamble, you will always be poor
• if you are greedy, you will never have enough
• if you keep learning without applying, you will never do anything10 -
My job involves writing a trading bot. Initially I thought it was gonna be cool but God I was wrong. Learning how to write in python (python's oop and indentation is a nightmare), backtesting a strategy, learning how to use libraries like backtester, TaLib , Pandas. All seems to have really steep learning curve and at the same time it is bloody boring.8

If you want to never find an IT job higher than an internship, change your bio to “I enjoy learning new things every day!”.

It's okay to be afraid of learning new things but this shouldn't stop you from actually learning it. Industry is fast changing and you need to evolve yourself with it.

When you guys are learning something/learning to make something, are you usually looking it up, watching a video, or reading a book? Or are you trying it on your own without knowledge on how?
I tend to either learn to do something from tutorials or books. But if I feel like I have an idea I’ll try it but then hit the books or internet if not.
How do you guys tackle learning something you haven’t before?8 -

I want to create a website and the frontend stuff is already done by another guy. It is similar to social media in that it needs an upvote-system and accept uploads. There also needs to be a payment system. I have very little experience in web development, but I have a lot of fun learning new things.
My question: Would you recomend a CMS(which one) or
learning by doing?7 -
Finally managed to install Manjaro with working hybrid nvidia drivers on my lapptop! I fucking love this OS already. Now I can start learning linux by actually using it.12

Learning Philosophy.
It is the most important thing for anyone to do to.
Everyone has one either implicit or explicit.
Learning metaphysics, and then more specifically epistemology has greatly increased my ability to process new information and build better models of the world around me. -

Is it wrong that I hate Java?
I tried learning it before, couldn't get myself to, I thought there was something wrong with me, maybe im not open to learning new languages
Then I got introduced to F#, Loved it! Even moved portions of pet projects to it
Looked at Java again
Still hate it.

I did software engineering but it was total waste of 4 years for learning. It was good for networking and exploring the shit going on in tech world but learning is always self work. Not learning to unit test as I was embarrassed that'd I'd missed it in college.
Now, thanks to a great ruby module I've taken this year, I'm leaning towards TDD. I really enjoy it. -
When I was about 11 years old I got my my own laptop and got interested in learning about computers. Started learning batch and could make some pretty fun text based games. Then as I got into my teens I stopped paying attention to the computer. But now that I'm older I see a bright future with Java development, with it being so multi-platformed. I'm now restating my passion for code and learning java. :)

thought of the day :
machine learning does not totally automate the end-to-end process of data to insight (and action), as is often suggested. We do need human intervention. And having the right mix of specialists is equally important as they have the expertise to build prototype projects in different business lines. Thus, one must hire the right team in the context of her organization to ensure an assured path towards success.
Besides, it is important to note that organizations don’t have machine learning problems. Instead, there are just business problems that companies might solve using machine learning. Therefore, identifying and articulating the business problem is mandatory before investing significant effort in the process and before hiring the machine learning experts.1 -

Is it a good idea to switch from learning openGL to learning Vulkan now?
I was learning openGL in the past months and now that Vulkan is out I am thinking about learning that instead. I've heard that it's harder to learn though, so roughly how long do you think it would take to learn it as a openGL novice?
In openGL I have used instanced rendering with different textures, specular maps in the shader all in perspective 3D of course.3 -

I started learning to programming when my dad introduced me to it, I then just started teaching myself and learning via trial and error. Happy Teacher's Day
Who thought learning would stop after School/College? Have been learning since childhood (though not as much as I should) and it will continue forever. I thank all the Teachers, Class Mates, My Parents, My Brother, My Friends, My Colleagues, My Seniors, My Juniors, My Managers and other Superiors. Everyone contributed their part 🙏🙏🙏
Edit - Totally Forgot Google and Co. Thank you won't suffice
Much more learning to come! Happy Learning :-)4 -

Hello devrant, I have a question:
What can you tell me about cybersecurity? is it worthwhile? I mean, could I get a nice job with it? Where should I begin to start learning about it?10 -
Did it when You l was a kid. Got good through a decade of learning before I even started working as one.
Don't want to waste all those years of learning, probably the only good thing about my childhood...
So yes, it's mostly sunk-cost-fallacy at this time. But it brings food to the table.1 -
It's important to have a little fun with what you do. You can work on and on like it's a chore and get along with it just fine, but right below the surface of the tools you use lies something truly interesting. Reading code, documentation, blog posts, what have you, all of it is just as helpful in learning as writing code.
And also, be kind. We all write crap code from time to time. As a beginner, I know I do. It's important to take it all as a learning experience.
Personal favourite quote that puts it very well: 'I guess you could call it a “ failure,” but I prefer the term “learning experience".' -
Anybody got junior dev motivational stories?
I got into development from sysadmin'ing about a year ago with a course. Finished it 3 months ago and self-learning ever since.

Any people using Julia here for something real. Like analysis or building applications? Is it worth learning or should I stick to python and cpp ?2

I was wondering if it is allowed to crawl all posted rants on devrant to do some fancy data mining stuff while learning python. Any clue?3

If you are learning to code like me just because a language is claimed to be the easiest to learn doesn't make it best for you. I spent so much time trying to learn python and struggled but switched over to Java which is definitely more complex than python but I've actually been learning it better. Find what's best for you!

Long time frustration
My close friend wanted to focus on machine learning and AI. in summer he did some research and figured out it is difficult to get those jobs. Now he is learning Angular 2. And applying for web development.
I am tired of people getting into web just because everything else seems difficult to them.
I just don't like people who think web is easy. And take it for granted.
I know comparing to machine learning Web does have an easy entry level barrier. But tired of devs, undermining web development complexity.
I think world thinks
Web is so easy that you can do it even if you hate it.5 -

So I am quite good in learning a programming language while doing a project with it. But I am really bad in "classical learning". I learned English in school from grade 3 and had three years of Spanish in my highschool but I learned absolutely nothing in my Spanish class. Now I would love to learn some other languages but my brain is kinda blocked. It seems like I first have to learn how to learn. What are some learning practices that you guys use? Especially for topics where you have to memorize things instead of understanding the logic behind it. And how do you train your brain to become a better learner? Thanks in advance!1 -
So I have a STUPID question about Machine Learning.
And I am being serious when I say this.
I want to get into machine learning but I really don’t want to accidentally create the AI that kills us all.
I’m not trying to boast my abilities or anything I’m not that great but I just
one don’t completely understand how machine learning works?
And two how do I keep it from learning more than I want it to??
I’m not trying to be stupid I’m just trying to understand so I don’t make anything that I regret.17 -
Learned about IDEAVim today. Still learning to use it, but I feel that after mastering the commands it's going to boost my productivity.

How do I create a Collab..
Well, I'm looking to form a team of 2 - 4 members. We will be devoted to learning machine learning through books, Kaggle, self assignments and various group discussions and pair programming. We will form a group name, open a GitHub account and upload our projects there. Am looking up to extending it to build projects together. This can also help us build our portfolios.
There are no tight requirements. But some good programming skills especially in Python will be great and a good understanding of high school math. We will be learning together.3 -

Just Started learning unsupervised learning algorithms, and i write this: Unsupervised Learning is an AI procedure, where you don’t have to set the standard. Preferably, you have to allow the model to take a chance at its own to see data.
Unsupervised Learning calculations allow you to make increasingly complex planning projects contrasted with managed learning. Albeit, Unsupervised Learning can be progressively whimsical contrasted and other specific learning plans.
Unsupervised machine learning algorithm induces patterns from a dataset without relating to known or checked results. Not at all like supervised machine learning, Unsupervised Machine Learning approaches can’t be legitimately used to loss or an order issue since you have no proof of what the conditions for the yield data may be, making it difficult for you to prepare the estimate how you usually would. Unsupervised Learning can preferably be used to get the essential structure of the data. -
