OH MY GOD
WHO NAMES A CONFERENCE ROOM AFTER AN -ADDRESS-??
At my new job, we had all day training on Friday. It was emphasized many times that we should not be late. I look at the meeting invite many times, and it says [123 Fake], with Fake being a Very Well Known Street, and I see on Google Maps that there's an office building there. Great, we must have an off-site training facility to help our clients become certified in our product. It doesn't say which floor, but I assume the small space we have in that large office building will become evident once I check in with lobby security.
Friday morning comes, I get to the office building 20 minutes early, and try to check in. They've never heard of my company. Maybe there's a computer lab we rent out? No, they don't know anything about that. I don't have work email or slack set up on my phone yet, so who do I call? I try reception, no one answers. Eventually I call our customer support line.
I shouldn't be at 123 Fake St. I should be at the office. Because that's the name of the conference room!
YOU HAD ONE JOB, ROOM NAMER!
Last night my boyfriend and I tried to think of worse names for conference rooms. The only ones I could think of were "meeting canceled" (but with that, at least I would be in the correct fucking building!) or just naming every conference room "conference room". Here's the thing: there's not just one 123 Fake St room! There's two of them right next to each other! So you can easily show up and think, I remember I was supposed to be in this room, but which one?
And I'm not even the first person to make this mistake. CLIENTS have gone to the wrong building before because they get included on meeting invitations that include conference room names! WTF!
It's pretty common to have Chicago conference rooms named after neighborhoods, or iconic buildings, etc. But nobody is going to think, "meeting in Bucktown? I'll just wander around the neighborhood until I find people with laptops". It's obviously a conference room. BUT A FUCKING ADDRESS OF A NEARBY OFFICE BUILDING? It's not even an iconic of a building!
Names matter. I care a lot about names in code. I never realized it could apply to the physical world as well. So now I am on a mission to change the names of these Goddamm conference rooms so I'm the last person to be directed to the wrong fucking building.
OH, and I'm out $9 for a taxi ride and a pair of gloves that got lost in the taxi so that's GREAT.13 -
Isn't it fantastic that someone right now, maybe, is building the next big thing in tech? Or that someone is building another JavaScript library to be released in the next 30 minutes?3

Pro Tip: if you're building a developer REST API, don't forget to add a sample response to each endpoint. I don't want to have to test each one when I'm building my integration, I'd rather build my model in one go with the documentation displayed on a second monitor.6
-
I started building a website. V2 became a single page application without a framework. V2.5 became a content management system.
I don't dream projects I just keep building...4 -
If it's worth building, it's worth testing. If it's not worth testing, why are you even wasting your time building it?1

It's time to put my 3D printer together 😍

Super excited, will post pictures in a couple days when I finish building it and writing the firmware for it.8 -

Apparently the fire hose in our building wasn't connected to the water main, because the legislation stated the building owner had to install a fire hose, not connect a fire hose to the water main.1

Linker crashed while building LLVM from source AT FUCKING 97% ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
(Antergos , GCC 7)
The error was that it exhausted the memory. How the fuck does a system with 16GB RAM and a swapfile run out of memory while building something? Dayum.5 -
I'm glad I have a job where we don't have team 'building' nonsense. We just come in and we team-build on the spot, as in, we get along.
Oh, the nightmare of my previous job where they resented employees for not joining some stupid party where they all got drunk and had forced 'fun'. I like authentic environments.5 -

I got a co-founder for a thing I'm building.

Who has the craziest (not largest per se) Production stack?
I just found out we have tomcat webapps, calling Angular, which is calling Java to call a Perl script.4 -

Totally didn't know today's a bank holiday . No one's in... Today 😅 ooops
What fun can you have in a huge empty building 🤔10 -
I made a bit of a tradition of building a list of hardware that's superior to whatever Crapple is releasing whenever Crapple releases something - and for the first time, I decided to make it public instead of just sharing it with some coworkers.
Making it public however took some time (luckily, yesterday was a holiday here, so I got it done now) - at least, making it looking "not like shit" took some time.
So enjoy my (very basic) bootstrap templated, yet possibly useful list of builds superior to the Crapple Rag Mini (which is a completely fictional entity not resembling any existing company in the world. Promise. Totally. Penguin's swear.)
The list can be found here - expect to see an update anytime Crapple pushes new shit to the market:
http://il-pinguino.com/superiortocr...
(possibly not safe for work, children, catholics and SJWs). Yeah, no SSL cert, currently. Hell, it's a private server, it doesn't process any of your info and it doesn't offer downloads... I might add one in the future.
I hope you can forgive my shameless self-promotion, it's not a commercial site, there are no ads/shitcoin miners on it and i don't get a share/cut/whatever - just a small humorous joke project. For now.
BTW: I didn't attempt to build any of those. It should work, but please don't sue me if it doesn't.5 -

My current project: PHP microframework that makes building REST API kinda 'easy'
But I've read some articles online that building APIs using PHP is a really bad idea. I guess I just wasted my time. Lol. I hate myself.6 -
no, we're not changing the world.. we're just building "textbox over database derpy enterprise solutions"1

Just started working as a junior developer, since we new junior developers started the hot chocolate is always unavailable in our building so you have to go to a different building to get it, is it some kind of way to get us to switch to coffee?11

Going back to my guilty pleasure and working on my Cosmos based operating system, going to take the shit task of building a scripting language and building some custom libraries to allow people to develop applications, system utilities and even custom shells and graphics managers!
Wish me luck!2 -

I always hear stories about someone hearing one of our developer friends is a developer and assumes that means they know everything about computers. Hell, I've had it happen to me before (usually the common "oh I have an app idea that's better than facebook! you just have to build it")
A big one I hear if someone asking a developer that has only worked with software to help fix a hardware issue or build a computer. Personally, I'd prefer if someone asked me about a hardware issue (except printers, fuck printers) or to build a computer for them. I've been called a rare breed for knowing about an equal amount about computer hardware and software.
I'd much rather do some physical work building a computer (as simple as a hello world program, a lot of it is putting shit where it fits) than build an entire website or program for someone. But I mean, I might actually know hardware a bit better than I know software, and that's just me. (Obviously never do anything for free when you could be paid for it) -
Yesterday I finished off a clientbuild then I checked if it's posting and he picked it up.
Today he called my boss and said that it's saying no CPU fan.
I connected the aio on the aio fan header not on the one for the cpu.
Thanks Asus for that selfdescriptive
Labeling now I can sieve to the client and fix this on a Saturday.3 -
Universal Basic Income, building a granular crowfunding platform.

During the company's Xmas event, we were off-site at a place that does events to do a team-building event followed by dinner party.
An error report came up, it wasn't a showstopper, but it was fairly serious, and the perfect excuse to sit out the BS improv team-building exercises that the powers that be thought would be a good idea to have.
Probably my favorite bug ever. -
Any devs out there worked building Golang microservices for a production environment?
I don’t have a specific question really. Just wondering who is out there on a similar path!
I’m building using Golang, Google Cloud, Docker, Kunernetes, and Terraform currently on a personal product bound for production!1 -
After one year of WFH I've just realize that I'm much much productive (and happier) by sleeping some extra hours at morning, doing outdoors activities during day and deeply focus working at late night.

So today my colleague is installing new dependency to our react native project and do something cool with it.
Him: I already push it in new branch and make a pr, would you review and merge it to master.
Me: ok let me try first.
.
.
Me: it is not working, i get this error.
Him: try change these xxx in xcode.
Me: ok, wait.
.
.
Me: now I get this error
Him: hmm... Try 'react-native link xxxx'
Me: ok
.
.
Me: I get same error like first error.
Him: now try 'react-native unlink xxxx'
Me: hmm... Wait.
.
.
Me: I still get same error, what's wrong?
Him: I don't know, it's working in my mechine .
*Me 'git reset - - hard' and try to build again.
**After building
Me: hey it's working after I git reset lol.
Him: nice
Me: let me clone it and try 1 more time.
*after cloning and building
.
.
Me: I still get same error like 1st error hahaha.
Him: so try to 'react-native link xxx' again.
Me: OKkK
.
.
Me: still get same error
Him: try git reset and build again
Me: hmm
.
.
*after git reset and build again
Me: I still get same error. I think the correct steps is :
1. Clone
2. Do something in xcode
3. React native link
4. React native unlink
5. Git reset - - hard
6. Build
I can't stop laughing 😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂 -
I'm building a desktop Java application, the build is running from 20 minutes and it keeps going... and people still mocks C++ for being slow in building5

Its strange how the process of building a house/building can be so different from building software even if the costs are the same!
Imagine hiring a construction company to construct a building, you give them a vague idea how idea how it should look thinking "i can always change stuff later for now i just need to get this started"
Then when the house is allmost done you say "make the windows bigger and the garage into an office"
After another week you say "we have been thinking and we would really like the living room to be under ground instead of above, and please rotate the entire house so we can have some morning sun" -

I'm about to buy a new desktop pc, looking for some that can run visual studio 2015 without problems, i also use netbeans and mysql. I was thinking in a amd fx 8230 e (8 core) with 16 gb ram and a 1gb video card ... or a amd a10 7860k(4 core /integrated gpu) also with 16 gb ram. What do you think guys? Whats better for software development? I'll appreciate some devs advice17

Had the best team building day today.
So it happens that 5 of us have Oculus Quest’s 2. We stayed after worked, ordered bunch of pizza’s and played Population One. We didn’t plan this, neither did we called it a team building event, but essentially it was.
Damn, I love my current company setting.2 -

Building. Building C++ takes so damn long. Accidentally checked out a wrong branch? Well there goes 20 mins.
-
Oh when you refactor the complete project structure and give for build the first time !!!
It's like you are sitting with your heart on your hand and praying to God that at least let the errors be readable(I am no genius to think I will be able to produce error free code the first time😝😝) -
First time building Android...

Yearly assessments are out at my job, I hate it. It's nasty and political. Assessment server is running on company hardware and all of this just seems so grimy and nasty.. definitely not building trust or team building...

Travis CI is so expensive for smaller developers.
I started using it when it was free for open source projects, but now they changed it, and the lowest tier ever is $69.
Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing service, which works exactly as described, but I only need to make like 5 builds a month, but the lowest tier gives me so much more allowance.
I wish they had a cheaper tier for less money. Now I gotta swap service and reconfigure a couple of projects.2 -

Has OSS Projects build systems become more complicated lately?
I took a stab at building concourse ci on FreeBSD. It being written in go, I expected it to be rather straight forward but no.
To "compile" the web UI assets, yarn (an alternative nodejs package manager apparently) was required. (Are js and CSS really compile targets now?)
Installed yarn and ran yarn build, it complained about lessc not being installed, so ran yarn install lessc which then told me that I was running an unsupported operating system.
I can compile the actual consourse binary just fine, but without yarn doing it's thing the assets required for the web UI does not get compiled in and therefore doesn't work properly.
Maybe I compile the web UI assets in Linux, and cross compile my FreeBSD binary...5 -

Not a rant, but has anyone here had any experience developing a StyleGuide?
I'm looking at building one that could document JavaScript and AngularJS as well as CSS etc.
Having a hard time finding a generator/tool that would work.
If not I'll look into building one myself... 😬4
