First time I heard a client say: "You've done a phenomenal job, but you've over-delivered. You should have come to me. We could have worked it out." after we had to ask for an extension.
That's a keeper.1 -
"Don't waste your time writing code. Browse on github looking for pieces of code, they're all well written over there."
... during a Javascript exercise lesson.5 -
When someone is watching over my shoulder my codeability sinks with 30%. When coding in just underware my codeability raises with 10%.
Last time someone watched over my shoulder I felt the -30 and tried to raise to -20 by entering underware-mode. Didnt work, somehow they couldnt combine. Turned out to a really awkward situation and codeability instead dropped even more!! Around -70% felt like a project manager!!!6 -
Stop reading and JUST start writing code.
I've been stuck in coding limbo because I kept looking for the right answer.
And I've learnt over time that the right answer will come to you only when you know what exactly you're looking for.
So start coding.10 -
Please don't put this on your resume and definitely don't list a language at 50% just because you used it once for a project.
We both know you're over exaggerating and all you'll do is waste my time.13 -
Development is a team sport.
If you think you can do something better but your team doesn't understand it or can't work with them. You have two options: Teach them or don't do it.
This task seems easy but teach and tell are different things. Prepare to repeat things over and over again and give up your own time to share the knowledge.9 -
If you don't format your code correctly in a time where IDE's do it with a fucking shortcut you should boil a kettle, pour it over your useless fucking head, and throw yourself off the nearest building, you absolute useless cunt.5

The Manager kept masturbating over "low hanging fruit".
The apples on the bottom of The Product have all been picked.
The apples at the top are starting to rot.
The Manager masturbated a bit more over the low hanging fruit.
The bottom of The Product is now so slippery with Manager Cum that the brave engineers can't reach the top anymore.
Time to bring my axe to work.13 -
Dude, for the hundredth time, stop leaving random chunks of commented out code all over the place in case we "need to find it easily later"...
This is literally the reason we use git.
No, I will not pass it in a code review. The same as last time. And the time before...
Dahhhhh19 -
Github == Graveyard
Projects thats been left behind,
Pet projects which are never maintained,
Some newly dug graves waiting for git push (might never happen) ,
Decaying code over time.
Just sayin. There might be graves of code which are loved around and are visited...7 -
A client just asked me to fix his internet over the phone. After about 25 mins of remote troubleshooting, he tells me "Hey nevermind, it was just the monitor" *click*
...
And that my children, is the story about the time i lost faith in humanity.3 -
Recruiters, why don’t you shift your working hours? It seems that all of you work 9-5 and this is exactly the time when I don’t feel comfortable describing my current job over phone.5
-
Every time I mess up my git branch I usually find that its pretty futile to fix it with fancy commands like 'git reset', 'git prune', 'git rebase', etc. I usually find it easier to just start over from scratch.
They should really add a command for that
'git fuck-it-start-over'9 -
Welp, time to ditch devRant
I don't mind green dots posting the same things over and over (and let's be honest, everyone had some of those complaints when we started coding), but what's been happening lately with spam and bots is just too much.
Thanks for the ride @dfox, it's been good while it lasted. Too bad I never got a dev duck tho, they were always out of stock :(18 -
Get children! You'll have so little time over for your fun projects that you force yourself to stop procrastinating and start accomplishing truly amazing things in just 5 minutes here and 20 minutes there.7
-
Okay so literally the first time I want to donate money to Wikipedia because they've been a great help over the years I click on PayPal and I get a 502 page
Yeah... Thanks3 -
Fucking bastard cunting customers I am not starting your shite at two minute to going home time, if you don't like go fuck yourself. #rant over16

how to be a man in upper management:
-come into meetings without any context and talk over everyone
-say very obvious and broad things to seem like you're mentoring the team
-waste time14 -
I've always just done CSS on my own by hand for every project because I thought it would improve my skills over time but now I've discovered Bulma with it's sass variables and responsiveness and things are just so pretty now, I never want to go back9

It's Sunday night... Jira is emailing you because your product manager assigned you 12 tasks.
You're about to check what these tasks are, then realize ... my weekend isn't over yet!

I'm working with a customer named Clint.
I realize now that over numerous tickets I started mistyping his name... just every god damn time.
Guess what letter I left out?
Nice guy for not correcting me ... extra fast ticket response for him now.6 -
After refusing to work over 40 hours a week and refusing to work last Sunday, today I was fired. It's been the 2nd time in my life and it's been the same deal: totally unrealistic timelines and totally unrealistic work expectations.
No big loss. Fuck that place.8 -
A coworker that is producing incredibly bad code and refuses to learn new stuff was declared "senior developer" by my boss. And me with over 20y experience? I am just a junior.. and have to clean up his mess all the time. I guess it is time to find new job.5

Let me ask you something: why do most people prefer ms word over a simple plain text document when writing a manual. Use Markdown!
You can search and index it (grep, ack, etc)
You don't waste time formatting it.
It's portable over OS.
You only need a simple text editor.
You can export it to other formats, like PDF to print it!
You can use a version control system to version it.
Please! stop using those other formats. Make everyone's life easier.
Same applies when sharing tables. Simple CSV files are enough most of the time.
Thank you!!?!18 -
People commenting in google play like "this app is bad, crashing all the time". Well, there is a report button over there, maybe you can help me to solve problems instead of whining?2

Hello World!
Migrating to my first Thinkpad (E585), something that I've wanted to do for a long time. I've heard a lot of great things and I wanted that sweeeet performance boost over my budget craptop (partially pictured).

> RX Vega 8 integrated
> 8GB DDR4
> 256GB NVMe
> It's a thinkpad
> Runs Gentoo Linux and I swear I've spent the entire weekend learning and configuring it (my first time)12 -
That time when you check devRant in your sleep and have a dream that a rant has over 300 ++'s. Waking up was such a disappointment.2

my mind is multithreaded but can not physically execute more than one thread at a time.
i.e. i want to say 5 sentences in the same time bc im too lazy to wait and say them one by one after a specified delay of time, so i fuck myself over while speaking.
like atomic regions, i bust a few words from time to time from different sentences i have in mind and it ends up not making any sense to what im saying, but it does in my head.
so this is what too much covfefe and sleepless coding nights does to people12 -
Sent another developer instructions for generating an SSH key pair and to send me the public key. He did so. There was a problem getting it to work. So, naturally, he emailed me the private key.1

I swear next time I see a UHD TV sold as 4K I'm gonna pop a cap in the lying fucker who mislabeled it!
4K has 552,960 more pixels dammit! This is the "720 HD" bullshit all over again!2 -
This time I want to share with you something I am really proud of. As I love sailing (I've been sailing for a long time before I even had my driving license - for over a 20 years now), and I love old, classic, wooden yachts - this is the result of couple of years of work. My own oldtimer Jollenkreuzer 15er:
https://youtu.be/tNLgkOLu_bQ
This is almost the same Jollenkreuzer that Albert Einstein received as a gift (despite the fact that he didn't know how to sail). Emir was built in 1953 and the renovation took over 5 years and it wouldn't be possible if not for my father.4 -
Installed Elementary on an old machine. Wouldn't boot. Started over fresh, worked the second time, did nothing different. It's pretty, but not sure if I'll keep it.12

When you've had a long ass 14 hour day and you're getting nowhere with a problem so you finally accept its time to go to bed...
You lie there for 45 minutes doing nothing but thinking up awesome solutions to the problem you went to bed over....4 -
What is it with over qualified, over certified consultants that go around spouting "best practises", and then come delivery time, have the most absurd bullshit that a junior with 3 weeks of knowledge in a particular subject would know what you just served up is nothing more then a pile of shit that will not be deployed even if your livelihood depended on it.
... Monday gonna be fun!3 -
Hi devRant!
After reading here for quite some time I finally registered.
I spend 4 hours yesterday raging over myself because I wasn’t able to think enough like a machine.
I need a rubber duck...3 -
Microsoft Azure down on a Friday at home time? Whoever tripped over that cable is probably trying awfully hard to slink out of the building unnoticed right about now2

To anyone asking for tips and tricks to start programming or become good at it, here is your ultimate golden advice: learn how to google and stop asking stupid questions like this before doing a quick research.
Reasons why:
1. You will most likely to learn better if you do your own research before asking for help. Even if you can't solve problem, you will be better and better at googling over time.
2. It is instant source of information. No need to wait for response (except response from server of course).
3. It takes only YOUR time.
4. Much more possible solutions/answers to your problems/questions.
5. Your quality of life will be improved over time. Not only your dev life but your daily life too.rant stop asking stupid questions how long this tags can be qol i am not your personal teacher programming tips tips11 -
.NET drinking game:
* Drink every time IntelliSense refuses to tell you what the actual error is because it's too busy choking on lambda syntax from a decade ago
* Take a shot every time you discover a closed, unresolved Github issue discussing your current showstopping build/CI problem
* Finish your drink every time the solution to your problem involves either manual edits to your CSPROJ (or whatever) file, or creating a new project altogether and copying all your fucking files over5 -
Finals over. Get to enjoy family time.

Good bye family so I can cram haha4 -
Every time I have to recall how to LaTeX, it's a huge pain in the ass. It's like learning to code in Greek (I don't know Greek). Happens every single time (it can be months before I need to use it again).
However.
Every time I finish my creation, I fall in love with LaTeX all over again.5 -
Thirty hours over two weeks, but we finally patched a angular app that was originally built on 2 (alpha) to 4, reducing the load time ten fold.
Don't thank me, thank super duck. The duck with the power to debug any code.
Gawd I'm tired.2 -
corporate emails and what they mean
- “changes to our privacy policy” — we raised capital, time for you to leave! good times are over.
- “changes to our pricing” — we are basically acquired, leave now.
- “blah blah community help blah blah” — fuck you, we can't even be bothered to fix bugs in our product.
- “blah blah 30% off blah blah” — yup, the unsubscribe button was broken last time you clicked it. -
A 12-week coding Bootcamp won't turn you into a full stack web developer.
It's like a diet it takes time, it's not over in a few weeks even if you start intensive and really commit to it.4 -
Things that only happen on Windows:
1. Windows updates itself with a security-update
2. On next reboot, upgrade procedure fails and reverts changes
3. Repeat
You cannot prevent the update, you cannot shutdown or reboot without the update and it takes around 30 minutes to install and revert every time during boot.
There is a saying; "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results." I therefore officially proclaim insanity of my Windows installation.5 -
One time I was assigned a task during a standup, it was a very easy one so I sent in a PR before the call was over.
Very huge mistake!
I got assigned 5 additional tasks on same call and few more before the meeting was over.
Ain't that a bitch?3 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.17 -
Programming should be like art, where you try and learn different skills and tools to get better over time.... Not a continuous game of whack-a-mole where your try to hit everything with a hammer...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯6 -
Was working on a bug with another dev one time. He was hovered over my shoulder pretty closely when someone stopped by the cube and said "What's going on?" His response: "We're bobsled programming".
-
I fucking hate estimating time.
I appreciate that agile is better than any planning type before it, but HOLY SHIT is estimating time a fool's game.
I've been at this over a decade now and I'm still like.. 50% accurate at best. The complicated shit is seldom obvious, and usually if I think something will be complicated it ends up being very simple once I dig in.7 -
Mate; I've been reading for over a week to understand some concept.
All I have after all this time, is existential dread, lack of self-esteem and a fear of being too stupid to ever understand this concept. 😤10 -
For the Nth time in a row now, the team has met...
...with no agenda...
...with no note-taking...
...with no off-topic course correction...
...and has gone almost an hour over time.
Please stop doing this oh my god, we're wasting time and nobody has a fucking source when two months later somebody asks when/why this was decided and our only answer is "uh we agreed at some point" and we do this all over again.1 -
I've come up with my fair share of dev pickup lines over time. I'm particularly proud of this one.2

First week is over at my first job in Web development. Really happy about the salary and the company, can't wait to Monday! 😁 though I don't have much time to my private projects, that sucks.3

The guy Intel hired to come up with instruction mnemonics must be just letting his cat walk over the keyboard every time he needs a new idea.

I love learning new things, but as I don't use them usually, I forgot them over time. It makes me so sad.2

New boss gets us to work overtime, all weekend and till 9pm. Promising that we will get that time back.
We get the project through the door. His KPI looks great to his boss. He then slithers his way around hints about this time back. Someone confronted him today and he says he can't officially recognise the over time due to company policy. The fucker.9 -
Sales person - I've got this bespoke job in, here's the spec *hands over a price of paper with a drawing* and I've charged 7 days of your time.
Me - thanks...
*dig deeper in to the job and it's at least a months worth of work*2 -
Spent almost four days trying to reverse engineer a feature the previous developers failed to document but a sales lead from before the take over was counting on.
Turns out it was never made and the whole exercise was a waste of time.3 -
After finishing apprenticeship my boss wanted to print every source code of our website (also CMS) as well our onlineshop (the whole not just own modules).
His intention was to inspect the code offline so he can i.e. lay sheets side by side for an better overview about any relations. Ich knew that he won't believe me if i tell him that's a bad idea so i printed over 10000 sites of source code.
He never looked a single time over it2 -
What the hell! Every time someone comes over to my desk and stands behind me my brain disengages from my fingers an I start misspelling and doing wrong commands etc..
Just one more reason everyone should have private office.4 -
Phonegap, when you are using the dev app: yeah nice seems to work fine
Phonegap, when you start the compiled app: welp time to run over my dick with a truck3 -
*Program crashes*
Colleague looks over my shoulder : While loop?
Me : ...while loop.
It's been two years...my brain just refuses to write non-infinite while loops. I tend to avoid them as much as I can cause every time, without fail, first time I create one I crash something.2 -
It's been three weeks now that „SPRING“ is over and Nerdism won over our interior decorations. Neither wife nor friends and family noticed. But I do. Every morning. This time I made an impact to our decoration. This single time4

Seriously these assholes just gave me shit over half a day and made me use vacation time for a client holiday recently when I work so many hours that family and sleep are a fading fucking reminder of a different life....

I was already about to hit my head against the wall: was trying to install nginx all the time, but was greeted by apache default page, over and over again I re-installed the servers, tried connecting directly to the server ip, changed server hardware, picked different distros, manually build from source, did everything possible, even searched the whole system for "apache" and different regex...
It was chrome cache........ after I wiped cache I was greeted by welcome to nginx...... 10 hours wasted.......3 -
@tahnik has been fighting me for days over which one looks better. Time to see what you guys think.. top or bottom22

That one time I was working on the Mattis quote but wrote “everyone” instead of “everybody” by mistake so started over. Awkward place to stop, I feel. Thought I’d share.5

Today I'm beginning my third year of Bachelor in embedded computing. And just as last year, I'm bored as fck. "Learning" the same stuff over and over, and wasting my time when I could be at work as a PHP developer ... FML7

I don't want to work on the project at my job anymore. It's an over engineered piece of shit.
I work on my pet project at home, but only for about 20 minutes at a time. After that, I feel the need to walk away and waste my time with other non-productive activities.
How do I get my love for development back? Has the corporate world killed it?5 -
My last boss insisted on using tables instead of divs and then asked me to make it responsive (every damn time). Also, functions that were over 10k of lines.4

I don't understand why someone who's totally sane and careful could forget to turn off MySQL general log over Christmas vacation. Of course Disk out of space caused us down time :/1

I feel like there should be "dev recruiter" position that people with developer skills could fill. Every time I go to an interview, I just know the person asking me dev related stuff has no fucking clue about anything I'm saying, it's printed all over their faces.
A good developer almost instantly knows if you know your craft or not.
Let's not keep wasting everyone's time -
How annoying are video tutorials!!! You lose a lot of time trying to find the interesting point. If you jump over the video you will end losing the point and playing backwards...8
-
Wtf is wrong with me? Last night, I had a very hard time falling asleep even though it was 3am.
Today, I've now been laying in my bed for over 2 hours, and I'm not even close to falling asleep. It feels like my brain wants to think over every possible scenario of what could happen tomorrow...
Please send help...9 -
Had a bug that I just couldn't figure out. How did I solve it? Had to think like a user. Just started clicking options over and over. Not giving it time. Found my issue.1

Every time I forget a semicolon, my IDE just shows a red squiggly line over the whole line, so I spend a long time analyzing the whole line taking to figure out what I did wrong, then and only then do I realize that I forget the semicolon.2

Very much! My internship during school turned into a full-time job over the summer! I don’t make crazy money, but I LOVE the work and cost of living in my area is pretty low compared to the rest of the country. So, I’m great! 😁😁2

Go home Mac App Store, you are drunk for 6 months now, every time I want to get over this annoying update I just update and then up like what I just found when checking for updates :)(10

This is 1:05AM and this is the 3rd time I start over my question to Stack Overflow because I don't know what the fuck is going on with jQuery UI, and when I finally get it, Google finds me both the question and the answer of the same and only dude that had the same problem than me FIVE FUCKING YEARS AGO and he couldn't solve it.
Fuck this, tomorrow I'll start over with VueJS.3 -
So I've been just assigned a code review. For a complete new feature.
It's over 20k lines of Code.
Time to quit -
This wanker approached me via LinkedIn before new year to be team lead to a diverse team of devs spread over a few time zones.
The mission? Build a metacritic clone, but geographically constrained to New York.
Me : How much are you offering?
Him: <radio silence>1 -
At the core, alongside repositories and IDEs, the trusty pen + paper is best for seeing bigger picture and fast note taking.
Although my chicken scratch handwriting isn't one to rave about.
It's changed from cursive to curseive over time...3 -
when i just read stuff about a programming language without putting any effort on it, after a month of vacation, every single thing i actually read and learnt over the past year came floating out of my brain and now i have to start over just so i can finish a programming challenge in time
note to self: time to get serious and keep up my pace in this devRace1 -
I just turned my keyboard over and gave it some gentle taps for the first time in three and a half years of working here..
I wish I had not done this..1 -
That time when I wowed all my colleagues with C++-code that executed over 2.5x faster than theirs, without changing one line of code.
I guess they didn't know what -O2 does (or that it exists, for that matter).7 -
Backups is the most important thing, but there is something more important then that. Making sure your actually backing up the files your paying to back up. Now im stuck waiting on 4 2tb drives in raid 6 connected over sata 2 to be recovered because a raid card failed but the drives are still good. Estimated time over 3 days.15

Lmao probably the time I worked 150 hours over two weeks (had to sleep on the job) for a project. During delivery I worked 09-22 during the weekend (unpaid) while my boss was out on his boat.4

Okay, Google. Stop this.
I'm very upset. Drive applications have gotten slower and slower over time on every single browser that isn't chromium based. This isn't their fault. You can't make your application, that tons of institutions pay for, gradually slower on every browser that's not yours. This never used to be a problem, and now it affects everyone *but you*. It's highly suspicious given your track record with YouTube. Hidden div over the video to prevent hardware optimization. What the hell?
You used to be the only big 4 company I had some trust left in. Over the last few months, I've lost it.11 -
This is my first time working with Android Studio and I'm not sure if it's really building my project or just got stuck...
It's been over an hour and I'm still waiting.6 -

Just an observation.
According to Stackoverflow's survey, it suggests that developers with more experience are less competitive. I still can't understand this. How can developers loose their interest over time?18 -
DNS ove TLS might come just in time for the Netherlands (if we're lucky).

Has anyone else built any websites or apps for friends or family for free? Is it just me, or is free work always the least appreciated? The demands are also unrealistic. Meanwhile my full-time employers charges over $6000 for a week of work for the client which on some weeks is things like adjusting some styles and changing some config, and they are appreciative every time.7

If you're a recruiter approaching people on linkedin then don't be a fucking idiot and waste their time, get to the fucking point damn it!
No one's interested in going back and forth with you over email especially when you have their number and could be done with it over a phonecall.3 -
Someone just asked me to rewrite their application and lower the time of generating 200 000 html files from over an hour to a few minutes
.
.
Why the fuck would u need 200 thousand html files wtf is wrong with you1 -
For me, I personally just over estimate the time and take my time working on it. Take breaks whenever I need, that could be going for a walk, watching a few videos, etc.1

using ssh over terrible internet speeds, spends all the time trying to figure out the cursor position3

Crawling out of my shell and taking control of my own work. Colleagues were surprised because I'm a very quiet person.
Sales can promise all they want, I decide when we're done. Taking the time to train my peers and learning from them. Communicating with everyone in a way to get things done. Get involved with other departments to see if processes can be optimized. Manage the customer's expectations (under-promise, over-deliver) Taking over this damn company to be more efficient! -
Today I got three-time downvoted because I basically forgot the word 'refers'. Now the guys that downvoted me are arguing over my response's corpse on wethere a function that I talked about still exists or not.1

Even the most widely used , greatest command "sudo" had a security bug which took years to identify.
So, next time if your product manager tries to screw you over a bug you can tell this as an example 😂😂1 -
By far the stupidest thing I've done while drunk is setting up a layered LVM-over-RAID1 + striped LVM storage system *and* managing not to lose any data.
Next time I ran `lsblk` and realized how that structure came to be I kinda turned white. -
God damn I hate that "smart" and "convenient" autoscrolling to focus areas which has kind of exploded on webpages, most of the time just fucking the user over while one is trying to read something or generally use the site.
Pages bouncing all over with shitty response, who the fuck thought that were a great idea, they should've been put in the ground as a Thank you.1 -
Deadlines tomorrow and as per company policies admin rights on our PCs are getting reset every now and then. Today is the third time I ask the IT support for a new admin password, and it’s the third time in a row they give me the wrong password. I cannot debug the apps I’m working on without admin rights.
Getting a little tense over here...4 -
"you're over-qualified for this position, sorry we can't hire you!"
Well, I never expected to hear something like that during an interview but I guess there is a first time for everything 😂.2 -
Over 100+ learning about, and configuring my i3 .config, .vimrc, .bashrc, etc. Exactly how I want it. Then one day: "Meh, time to reinstall and delete all configs!"

Once I was lead developer, new guy came and he was impossible in his quest to be right. We would argue for three hours, while time passed away. Every day arguments over slack...7 -

Currently have this issue where I just want to try out all the cool things I see, so my project is not going anywhere and instead just gets rewritten over and over but with a different tool or architecture or framework each time. Can't lock down on something I like, because I like everything 😅1

Word is spreading that CNN, which is owned by Time Warner, got a reddit users IP from their mods, and with their relation to Time Warner, got his identity.
Then extorted him to apologize or be revealed.
This is huge, and we don't even know its the only time it has happened.
VPNs may not even truly protect you if the ISP can connect the dots over time, with time stamps.
Holy shit, CNN just weaponized ipv41 -
Some things never change

I got my evaluation today. First time in a year that i had a talk longer 30 minutes. 1,5 hours was a bit too much maybe. After an hour i just wanted to get over with it.
Verdict: average
Meanwhile i could’ve improved my project... -
Work expands so as to fill the available time. That's Parkinson's Law.
Or in other words: The amount of time that one has to perform a task is the amount of time it will take to complete the task
So, if you have a deadline, wait until the correct time and then start working. This helps a lot in terms of not over-doing things and will save precious man-hours.3 -
Yea... it's not at all obvious I have my nose buried in a book and constantly tapping at the keyboard to run tests for how I might work out this problem. Now is an excellent time to repeat my name over and over, since I've been trying to ignore it, until I look up at you, just so you can show me that hilarious giphy thingy you found.1

Man, i hate these Windows 10 updates. Can't even boot up system properly anymore. Over an hour and half wasted with failed update installation EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

Why tf you trying to install update if its gonna fail?!!
I wish I could stop getting Windows 10 updates forever. Guys, Any ideas to block updates other than switching to linux?..6 -

I've submitted a PR to a large open source project, and I've had no feedback in over two weeks.

So I make websites on the side for small time clients for some additional income. And without fail every time I sit down to work on this one site something goes wrong. First there were problems with the hosting, and now the template that the client chose is no longer for sale. I hope I'm not going to lose them over this :( I've sent them a list of alternative templates and contacted the company behind the original template to ask what is up. Real shame because they picked what I considered the favourite too and now I regret waiting to fork over the money to make the purchase.5

Is there a word cloud and ngram (word frequency over time) for devRant?
I'd like to test the following hypotheses:
- 'Fuck' is in the top 20 words.
- Swearing happens more often as the week progresses, with the exception of a small Monday morning spike. -
I'm in a situation at work where management and even the team I'm on, does not want to create a test suite, because:
1. It takes time to get decent code coverage. Time that could be spend doing new features
2. My team doesn't like to test.
We're now in a situation where we break something every single fucking time we relase and the manager just ignore that it's now a common occurrence. It it literally just a matter of time before the entire fucking backend will shit itself over poorly maintenanced code (who has time to do refactoring anyway) and poorly tested flow.
It annoys me greatly that a developer with many years of experience fails to see and understand that just doing test by hand, screws us over so badly.
As a junior dev, i would like to know, how are your team dealing with testing?
Because we're clearly not...9 -

My gaming experience is usually:

2. wait for windows update
3. turn it off
Doing same quest over and over, how I’m supposed to get to the next level ?
I don’t have so much time for gaming.7 -

Low code platforms (e.g. OutSystems) will gradually win over developers who will look back at all the time they've wasted and think "why the fuck didn't tell me about this sooner!!!"
Disclaimer: I work for OutSystems and can honestly say that I can create a production-ready app while you're still picking the best JS framework to get started with. Been there...

So, there was this time I was a security intern for google, It was my first day as an intern tho :p and I got a little excited about exploring stuff and all at the workplace. Me having a large appetite was mesmerized by the food supplied over there.
I might have sat approximately 2 hours over there fantasizing about how much could I save over food by eating a lot over here and taking some to home.
Then came the SE/SDE guys over my place and we started discussing how there was a loophole here and how one could exploit it. All were heads over heels how was I making calculations for "my" property. All seemed to be pretty interested except for one guy. This guy was over excited how I was managing this and slacking off over the first day. He happened to be a senior lead architect, turns out he shows too much interest in anything he finds suspicious. This wasn't supposed to be rant, but yeah. My story. -

So I freelance from time to time for this web design company. They asked me to tediously update content on a html site for them (over a 100 pages)... asked why no CMS they replied the customer has no budget... but trying to convince them to move to a CMS as HTML has become unmanageable. In recent time my anger comes from a junior dev who keeps saying he's got no time to test and breaks working code leading to others getting the blame and the team leader not addressing the problem.
In the past it was micro managing managers who thought they knew how to make a UI best, and also that one project where they gave a client carte blanche on changes to avoid legal trouble. Nothing more infuriating than multiple people telling you how to change things over and over while you're being passed around in their power struggle.1 -

Do you usually spend some of your time learning new programming language/pattern/technology? I mean, I am not the type of person who does same thing over and over again, also like learning new things (I spend a lot of time per month studying new things), trying to get experience and trying new technics, but other side of me thinks that I need to be the best in one of them... Currently in our 4th cycle of manual regression testing for a release and still finding bugs. Automated tests? What are those? That sounds an awful lot like it would take time to implement. Time that could be spent fixing the bugs and getting the release out the door.

My respect for anyone goes up 10x when they mention that they have been a freelancer dev their entire career so far.

my sleep issues are getting out of hand. i have insomnia and sleep apnea, and materials for my APAP are expensive and nothing that won't fuck up my brain over time (i.e. any sleep aid that isn't melatonin, pretty much all of them make you lose brain matter density over time, and melatonin does jack shit) is strong enough to knock me out. at this point i'm getting one 5AM-4PM sleep cycle a week. i can't exactly fix it as i'm expected to be awake and present during the day, so i'm stuck sucking down caffeine all week during the day to try and be awake for 8 hours. i'm not even employed, so it's sitting and doing fuck all during that time.
goddammit why do i have to go through this shit8 -

That one time my brother received a call from some Indian dude that "worked" for Microsoft, who was alerting him about a "virus".
My brother (who was in his mid teens at the time) downloaded a program that the guy linked him to, and consciously installed it to allow the dude to take over his computer. Then, with full power over the computer, guy started doing shady stuff and offered him a one year protection for $99.
Thank God mom knew what was up when he asked for her credit card info...

In the beginning, even those who are remotely involved with the task/project want to contribute to it. Over the time, as they realise that there is some serious work to do, one by one the turn quiet and drop out.
But as soon as you take action to make sure that the whole thing is going to work out in the end, they come back complaining because they feel that you went over their heads.

I had been working as an IT-consultant, for some year. Where I often had to educate about APM products, and a lot of them was over skype to outsourced IT departments in Asia.
I could use a hole dag teaching them about the product, and how to use specific part of them. Even though I asked them if they understood everything I have said. I never got any questions or had to immerse anything.
But almost every single time after, I got a ton of email asking about everything I said. Why just why, would you just sit, smile and nod. If you did not understand anything. So I had to use days, going over the same presentation over and over again, to each and every participant.
Now I am so happy I gave the company the finger, and became a full-time developer instead.1 -

I'm really frustrated by the size of node_modules folder that gets created every time for every project. So, I've been looking for some time-space saving solutions. And I found PNPM ( https://pnpm.js.org/ ) , Yarn ( https://yarnpkg.com/ ) and Pkglink ( https://github.com/jeffbski/pkglink ). But I'm not sure which is better to serve my purpose.
Things I'm looking forward to solving:
1. I don't want to re-download the same packages over and over again
2. I don't want the same packages to be in multiple projects and eat up space
3. I want a stable, fast and disk space saving solution

So I was on github today and this teenager came up to me and asked what I was doing but I was too chill to answer at that time.
My screen read "Forking in progress" and now he's been saying it over and over again and thinks it's funny.
*smh*1 -
I just used `git add --patch` for the first time and I feel like a git god!
(No, my text editor was not giving me enough control over the hunks.) -
Totally done with all the blockchain hype. Plz when I need a distributed secure ledger over time functionality I will be the first to consider bc. But until then just stfu1

Maybe one of you can help me, since I can't find something online.
I want to do a transfer.sh-like app in Go. So you can upload a file with curl, it gets stored there for some time and you can download it later.
The problem is, I only found tutorials for uploading files over html-forms, not over curl.
Does any of you know, how to write a handle-function, that accepts something Like
"Curl --upload-file SUPERIMPORTANT localhost:9999/upload"1 -
Ever just feel completely multi-fucked by that release date stealthly planned behind your coding ass? When the typical marketing mentality takes over, and everything turns to shit because someone suddenly felt like it was time to news letter All the customers about a new feature and what not. Please tell me I'm not the only one experiencing this Dick move from time to time.1

Guy regularly comes off as woke in his shows. Been getting worse over time and it started really rubbing me the wrong way.
And in typical woke fashion, still has ass backwards stereotypes on women.2 -
Working with non-existing specs. Just have to pick a guess what arguments and columns that will be needed. Right now it feels like I'm up to a very fuzzy task, that will need to be done over and over again until it gets right, instead of doing it right once and for all. If this is agile, then agile is a waste of time!5

One more week and the holidays are over! I only wish time off flew by as fast as time spent working...
-
When you're so busy with work that you haven't had time to shower in a week, your eyes have purple sockets, you've had 20 hours of sleep over 5 days and you've missed an entire week worth of e-mails.

Hey guys,
What books had the biggedt impact on how you live your life, conduct your business, the way you code or make decisions?
I'm reading "Zero to One" for the second time now and love reading it all over again.10 -
Feeling a noob on preferring azure over aws for a long time after understanding difference between IaaS and PaaS 🙃1
-
Ever feel like all you ever do is recode the same projects over and over with no significant time or funding or sometimes energy to complete something that would be new or awesome ?
I really wish I had more opportunity to collaborate personally.1 -
did i mention this the last fake time ?

errm
russia has an airforce ?
pretty big one i thought.
why do they need a train station ? that's just a convenience.

unsound military reasoning.16 -
CMS + Website(Template + initial conntent) entirely in go with pictures I had to take myself first. 1000$ for around 2-3 Months of work over the time span of a year. Good thing my main job país decent.
-
When the fuck did valet go from .dev to .test. Fucked me over bug time. Needed up breaking dnsmasq and had to rest the whole system. Sys noob. I can program though 😂
-
Great start to a day when a new release of code has performance degrade over time. Turns out some concurrent collection was causing lock contention.
-
Goals, "debug all test issues in time"
WTF, when I started this recently there were close to 200 issues because this was never tested, I've got it down to a little over a hundred, define "all" and "in time".
Not sure if I should say something or just let the numbers speak whenever wishful thinking meets reality.
Maybe I'm just very touchy.1 -
Why the hell tensor flow taking 2 hrs of my time to compile all these from the source ....any idea??running on Mac over virtual box 4gb ram Ubuntu 16.047
-
You know as I see these bastards having stolen my story over time I think wow
I put the effort in
I knew how to interview
I got the job
These creatures stole my resources by mimicking me often very poorly
Time to pay “you” the full amount owed and starve awhile -
So, I had a friendly debate with my senior dev today working over this feature.
What do you say is the best approach?
1. Optimize at the time of building the feature.
2. Do the feature work, optimize all at once. (let's say on a time cycle).5 -
Starting new job, moving to new location, and trying to finish five massive projects.... "You want me to take over development of that entire stack? Sure I've got time!"2
-
It's always hard to balance time between romantic affairs and programming projects when both are going on simultaneously. I've been talking to a girl at my college, and even though she doesn't take up much of my time, I still feel like it's harder to make time for my programming. I guess this is more of dating affecting my code, but I personally prioritize code over dating currently in life.

What everyone needs to remember is there is never a time when I’m not starting to remember or remembering or just in an elevated state of I know you’re up to something so if you al think you’re able to get away with things over and over again you’re looking at this wrong
I’m being given literally an opportunity for revenge every day multiple times a day8 -
Oh and by the way everybody knows these creatures fucking people over over stupid things like not wearing striped shoes or buying a nonoffensive brand they arbitrarily don't like is their fault ALL THE TIME.
no matter what they do to hide it and this time they will be punished physically and painfully if they fuck with this person.1 -
at any point in time, have you had over 200 tabs open? why the fuck is such a low number such an edge case, that neither firefuck nor chrome can handle these without leaking RAM (5MB/sec and 100MB/sec respectively).11

Clean code and experience.. if you had to maintain a big project over a long time you’ll learn to get your own code cleaner😅

Anyone here ever use templates from https://html5up.net/?
I used one for my portfolio which was at the time static and now I'm having absolute hell trying to port it over to Ionic
