Hey everyone,
First off, a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I are very happy with the year devRant has had, and thinking back, there are a lot of 2017 highlights to recap. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff!):
- We introduced the devRant supporter program (devRant++)! (https://devrant.com/rants/638594/...). Thank you so much to everyone who has embraced devRant++! This program has helped us significantly and it's made it possible for us to mantain our current infrustructure and not have to cut down on servers/sacrifice app performance and stability.
- We added avatar pets (https://devrant.com/rants/455860/...)
- We finally got the domain devrant.com thanks to @wiardvanrij (https://devrant.com/rants/938509/...)
- The first international devRant meetup (Dutch) with organized by @linuxxx and was a huge success (https://devrant.com/rants/937319/... + https://devrant.com/rants/935713/...)
- We reached 50,000 downloads on Android (https://devrant.com/rants/728421/...)
- We introduced notif tabs (https://devrant.com/rants/1037456/...), which make it easy to filter your in-app notifications by type
- @AlexDeLarge became the first devRant user to hit 50,000++ (https://devrant.com/rants/885432/...), and @linuxxx became the first to hit 75,000++
- We made an April Fools joke that got a lot of people mad at us and hopefully got some laughs too (https://devrant.com/rants/506740/...)
- We launched devDucks!! (https://devducks.com)
- We got rid of the drawer menu in our mobile apps and switched to a tab layout
- We added the ability to subscribe to any user's rants (https://devrant.com/rants/538170/...)
- Introduced the post type selector (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...) (which will be used for filtering - more details below)
- Started a bug/feature tracker GitHub repo (https://github.com/devRant/devRant)
- We did our first ever live stream (https://youtube.com/watch/...)
- Added an awesome all-black theme (devRant++) (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...)
- We created an "active discussions" screen within the app so you can easily find rants with booming discussions!
- Thanks to the suggestion of many community members, we added "scroll to bottom" functionality to rants with long comment threads to make those rants more usable
- We improved our app stability and set our personal record for uptime, and we also cut request times in half with some database cluster upgrades
- Awesome new community projects: https://devrant.com/projects (more will be added to the list soon, sorry for the delay!)
- A new landing page for web (https://devrant.com), that was the first phase of our web overhaul coming soon (see below)
Even after all of this stuff, Tim and I both know there is a ton of work to do going forward and we want to continue to make devRant as good as it can be. We rely on your feedback to make that happen and we encourage everyone to keep submitting and discussing ideas in the bug/feature tracker (https://github.com/devRant/devRant).
We only have a little bit of the roadmap right now, but here's some things 2018 will bring:
- A brand new devRant web app: we've heard the feedback loud and clear. This is our top priority right now, and we're happy to say the completely redesigned/overhauled devRant web experience is almost done and will be released in early 2018. We think everyone will really like it.
- Functionality to filter rants by type: this feature was always planned since we introduced notif types, and it will soon be implemented. The notif type filter will allow you to select the types of rants you want to see for any of the sorting methods.
- App stability and usability: we want to dedicate a little time to making sure we don't forget to fix some long-standing bugs with our iOS/Android apps. This includes UI issues, push notification problems on Android, any many other small but annoying problems. We know the stability and usability of devRant is very important to the community, so it's important for us to give it the attention it deserves.
- Improved profiles/avatars: we can't reveal a ton here yet, but we've got some pretty cool ideas that we think everyone will enjoy.
- Private messaging: we think a PM system can add a lot to the app and make it much more intuitive to reach out to people privately. However, Tim and I believe in only launching carefully developed features, so rest assured that a lot of thought will be going into the system to maximize privacy, provide settings that make it easy to turn off, and provide security features that make it very difficult for abuse to take place. We're also open to any ideas here, so just let us know what you might be thinking.
There will be many more additions, but those are just a few we have in mind right now.
We've had a great year, and we really can't thank every member of the devRant community enough. We've always gotten amazingly positive feedback from the community, and we really do appreciate it. One of the most awesome things is when some compliments the kindness of the devRant community itself, which we hear a lot. It really is such a welcoming community and we love seeing devs of all kind and geographic locations welcomed with open arms.
2018 will be an important year for devRant as we continue to grow and we will need to continue the momentum. We think the ideas we have right now and the ones that will come from community feedback going forward will allow us to make this a big year and continue to improve the devRant community.
Thanks everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2018,
- David and Tim48 -
devRant just hit 50,000 downloads on Android (fancy new store badge, yay!). Thank you everyone for being part of this community and spreading the good word! @dfox and I have some fun new features in the works, exciting times!23

Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):
- After nearly a year in the making, the completely overhauled devRant web version was launched (https://devrant.com/rants/1255714/...)
- @linuxxx became the first devRant user to hit 100,000++! (https://devrant.com/rants/1157415/...)
- We once again pulled off the greatest April fools joke everrrr (https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...)
- @trogus started making awesome devComics and http://devcomics.com was launched
- We added a feature to allow rant filtering by post type (https://devrant.com/rants/1354275/...)
- We made it so avatars could have expressions! (https://devrant.com/rants/1563683/...)
- We had a booth at TechDay New York and got to meet some devRant users! (https://devrant.com/rants/1394067/...)
- We made major backend architectural improvements - including spinning up a special high-powered-CPU web server to handle avatar creation and make the creation process much faster (https://devrant.com/rants/1370938/...)
- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable
- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! (just a few: https://devrant.com/rants/1588218/... https://devrant.com/rants/1884724/... https://devrant.com/rants/1683365/... https://devrant.com/rants/1922950/...)
We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're continuing to constantly evaluate feedback from members of the community to decide where to take the app next. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2019,
- David and Tim26 -
New devRant feature! Filtering by post type! This took a bit longer to get out than we had planned, but now that extra click to label a post type will be put to good use! Hate memes but love rants? Want to only see questions? Don't want to see random off-topic posts? Filter away!
We're pushing to Android now, iOS shortly, and web will be coming soon.41 -
A devDuck update!
Hey everyone,
First off, thank you to everyone who has purchased a devDuck (or a bunch!) and thanks to all who have given us feedback. @trogus and I are thrilled at the incredible response these ducks have gotten. If you haven’t seen them yet, you can check them out at https://devDucks.com or the devRant Swag Shop (https://swag.devrant.io).
We are trying to process all of the orders as quickly as possible and our goal is to have all current orders out by the middle of this coming week. Many orders have already shipped, but if yours hasn’t, rest assured it will very soon!
If you ordered a Java devDuck or cape, your order might be delayed a bit until the middle of this coming week because Java seems to be a heavily-demanded cape and we needed to get the material shipped in to make more of that, specifically.
So far we’ve gotten some awesome feedback from the community. A short list of possible future additions based on what’s been requested: Go devDuck, Kotlin devDuck, Perl devDuck, Android devDuck, and possibly some devDuck accessories like little hats, sunglasses, headphones, etc. If you have any other ideas just let us know:)
Lastly, please know that even with the launch of devDucks, we remain extremely committed to the devRant product and we have some very exciting big devRant features coming very soon.
Thanks again everyone!28 -
Every user of any app: "damn these annoying ads. I hate ads!"
Average devRant user: "Dfox, add ads please so we can support you more."
What a wonderful community (except those who repost memes). ❤️13 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
We had a bit of a slow year in terms of devRant updates, but we gained some momentum towards the end of the year and we're looking forward to carrying it into 2020. Recently, we launched what I think are our coolest new avatar items yet (https://devrant.com/rants/2322869/...) and behind the scenes we got our iOS/Android apps on the latest version of the frameworks we use, which will help us continue to improve stability. Still, we definitely would have liked to do more, but we're optimistic the coming year will bring great things for devRant.
One thing we are very proud of is this year we had our best year ever in terms of platform stability and uptime. Despite the platform growing and our userbase growing, we had almost no complete app downtime even though our infrastructure is minimal. A large part of this is thanks to devRant++ supporters, who allow us to maintain a small but effective tier of infrastructure and redundancy.
In the coming year, we're going to launch one of our most ambitious initiatives yet, and we're also going to continue to improve the devRant experience itself. We want to try to gather more user feedback, so we'll be working on a way to do that too. Stay tuned, more on this stuff coming soon.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community! And thank you to our awesome devRant++ supporters for continuing to be the main drivers to keeping devRant up and running.
Looking forward to 2020,
- David and Tim28 -
Hey everyone,
We have a few pieces of news we're very excited to share with everyone today. Apologies for the long post, but there's a lot to cover!
First, as some of you might have already seen, we just launched the "subscribed" tab in the devRant app on iOS and Android. This feature shows you a feed of the most recent rant posts, likes, and comments from all of the people you subscribe to. This activity feed is updated in real-time (although you have to manually refresh it right now), so you can quickly see the latest activity. Additionally, the feed also shows recommended users (based on your tastes) that you might want to subscribe to. We think both of these aspects of the feed will greatly improve the devRant content discovery experience.
This new feature leads directly into this next announcement. Tim (@trogus) and I just launched a public SaaS API service that powers the features above (and can power many more use-cases across recommendations and activity feeds, with more to come). The service is called Pipeless (https://pipeless.io) and it is currently live (beta), and we encourage everyone to check it out. All feedback is greatly appreciated. It is called Pipeless because it removes the need to create complicated pipelines to power features/algorithms, by instead utilizing the flexibility of graph databases.
Pipeless was born out of the years of experience Tim and I have had working on devRant and from the desire we've seen from the community to have more insight into our technology. One of my favorite (and earliest) devRant memories is from around when we launched, and we instantly had many questions from the community about what tech stack we were using. That interest is what encouraged us to create the "about" page in the app that gives an overview of what technologies we use for devRant.
Since launch, the biggest technology powering devRant has always been our graph database. It's been fun discussing that technology with many of you. Now, we're excited to bring this technology to everyone in the form of a very simple REST API that you can use to quickly build projects that include real-time recommendations and activity feeds. Tim and I are really looking forward to hopefully seeing members of the community make really cool and unique things with the API.
Pipeless has a free plan where you get 75,000 API calls/month and 75,000 items stored. We think this is a solid amount of calls/storage to test out and even build cool projects/features with the API. Additionally, as a thanks for continued support, for devRant++ subscribers who were subscribed before this announcement was posted, we will give some bonus calls/data storage. If you'd like that special bonus, you can just let me know in the comments (as long as your devRant email is the same as Pipeless account email) or feel free to email me (david@hexicallabs.com).
Lastly, and also related, we think Pipeless is going to help us fulfill one of the biggest pieces of feedback we’ve heard from the community. Now, it is going to be our goal to open source the various components of devRant. Although there’s been a few reasons stated in the past for why we haven’t done that, one of the biggest reasons was always the highly proprietary and complicated nature of our backend storage systems. But now, with Pipeless, it will allow us to start moving data there, and then everyone has access to the same system/technology that is powering the devRant backend. The first step for this transition was building the new “subscribed” feed completely on top of Pipeless. We will be following up with more details about this open sourcing effort soon, and we’re very excited for it and we think the community will be too.
Anyway, thank you for reading this and we are really looking forward to everyone’s feedback and seeing what members of the community create with the service. If you’re looking for a very simple way to get started, we have a full sample dataset (1 click to import!) with a tutorial that Tim put together (https://docs.pipeless.io/docs/...) and a full dev portal/documentation (https://docs.pipeless.io).
Let us know if you have any questions and thanks everyone!

Announcing a few new devRant Android/iOS features, available immediately in the latest versions of the devRant app which just went live.
1. As pictured, you can now easily scroll to the bottom of any long rant by selecting “scroll to bottom” in the ... menu of any rant with >= 10 comments.
2. At the bottom of any rant that has at least 1 comment, you’ll now see a button that allows you to refresh the rant (and scrolls to the bottom) so you can see new comments if there are any.
3. Any rant can be refreshed by tapping the “Rant” title in the title bar.
How did we come up with these awesome ideas/decide to add these features? For most of them, we didn’t! At least 2 of these were recently requested by devRant users (some requested a bunch of times) and we heard everyone and saw how much these were needed. Remember, you can always suggested features in our GitHub issue tracker: https://github.com/devRant/devRant - we always appreciate feature suggestions and ideas for improvements!
Just to add one note - we still have plans to improve commenting functionality, but we’re hoping for the time being these additions make things a little more intuitive.
Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks everyone!22 -
The typical devRanter
1. Uses dark theme of IDE and devRant app
2. Hates his/her clients
3. Likes Arch based distros
4. Checks his/her ++'s count or notifications after publishing a rant
5. Hates facebook
6. Associate the morning with a cup of coffee
7. Can't do any job when there are no headphones
8. iPhone vs Android? - fuck, they both are good/bad
9. Every time googles git command to remove a local branch
10. The best VCS is git, but I never used any other VCS22 -
Maybe it does some sort of calculation to let us know who is going to call next by accessing calls? #facepalm5

Hello Monday:
0.Arrive late due to traffic.(Apparently a car hit a cow crossing the road)
1. Try upgrading php5 to php7 and break stuff in the process and waste 2 hours fixing things.(Poor connection so ssh sessions hung occasionally)
2.PHP fixed, open Gmail and get over 100 emails from clients about the server being down(because of (0)).Ignore all.Find a snaglist of over 20 TODOs.
3.Open Android Studio, update to 2.3 and everything becomes broken. Each time i open it ,it crashes and i have to "Report to Google"
4.Spend the next 1 hour reinstalling AS.It finally works.
5.Open Project and the libraries are broken.Spend another hour upgrading build tools.
6.Leave SDK to update and decide to check my Google Cloud console.$50 bill pending.Shit.
7.Try XCode. Remember the project is still in Swift 2 and I have to upgrade it(Would take eternity).Immediately closes xcode.
8.Gives up on life and decides to log into Devrant.4 -
DevRant has more reviews on Android compared to iOS.
Well, yeah... Java devs are always bitching about something 😉10 -

Was learning how to make Android wear watch faces... So I made one for devRant.
Will be uploaded to Playstore soon if I have your permission @dfox20 -
So, there is this company (let's call it A) with an average idea, who got the android app and webservices from a company(B) . The service was awful but cheap. The owner of the A was a friend and gave my company the handover to manage the project. I actually ranted about that on wk11(The worst project). Now, The project was terrible. It took me months to give it any real structure, fix the services, make it compatible with iOS. Now, that majority of the work was done, suddenly we were too expensive and the work was being given to another company while much of our payment wasn't going to come(Friggin company politics). But, guess which company did the project now go to, it was 'B'.
After a couple of weeks I see, inline styles and js errors start emerging on the website.
Tell you what, if there's any justice in this world, he will one day come back to me and then I will respectfully tell him to fuck off!
Thank goodness there's devRant to just whine about this shit!2 -
devRant Android users - if you are a user who can consistently reproduce a devRant app crash and wouldn't mind helping me please let me know. You can comment here or email me at david@devrant.io
I'm trying to get rid of a couple of remaining crashes that seem to be happening in the Android app but we've never really been able to reproduce any of them. Thanks!74 -
UPDATE: devRant Trans-Oceanic Journey Community Project
It was a mere 12 days ago that I asked the question; 'Could devRanters, as a community, build a 21st Century Technology-Laden ‘devRant devie-Stressball-in-a-Bottle’ and send it on a journey across the Atlantic ocean?
I am thrilled to report that devRanters enthusiastically accepted this difficult challenge. A core team quickly formed and a tremendous amount of research and progress has been made in a short period of time. I want to give you a high level-flavor of what we are doing. Please keep in mind we still need your help. We welcome all develops to take part in this journey.
I want to give appreciation to the devRant Founders @dfox and @trogus. Without your support and sponsorship this project would not have been possible. devRant brought us together and it a reality. Devie journeying across the Ocean the Columbus sailed will stir the imagination of children and adults worldwide when we launch on May 1, 2017.
Some of the research and action items in progress:
- Slack and trello environments were created to capture research and foster discussion.
- A Stony Brook University Oceanography Professor suggested the Gulf Stream would be a good pathway across the ocean. We researched it very and agree. The Gulf Stream has been a trans-Atlantic conduit for hundreds of years. We are deciding whether to launch from Cape Hatteras, NC or the Virginia coast. Both have easy access to the rapid currents in the Gulf Stream.
- We are researching every detail of the Gulf Stream to make the journey easier and faster for devie. We have maps and a team member gathered valuable ideas reading a thorough book – ‘The Gulf Stream’.
- We decided on using a highly resilient plastic rather than glass for the bottle material. Plastic is much lighter, faster and glass breaks down more easily. The lightweight enclosure will allow us to take full advantage of waves and ample trade winds. We are still discussing the final design as we want to minimize friction and mimic the non-locomotion fish that migrate thousands of miles riding the Gulf Stream.
-The enclosure might be 3D printed unless we can locate a commercial solution. We have 3D specs and are speaking with some experts. There are advantages and dis-advantages to each solution.
- We will be using Iridiums' RockBLOCK two-way satellite technology to bounce lat-long coordinate pings off their 36 low-orbit satellites. The data will be analyzed by our devRant devie analysis software. IOS and Android public apps being built by the team will display devie's location throughout the journey in.
- Arduino will be used as the brains
- Multiple sensors including temperature and depth are being considered
-A project plan will be published to the team Friday 12/9. Sorry I am a few days late but adding some new ideas.
There are still a lot of challenges we must overcome and we will.
That’s all for now. I will send updates and all ideas / comments are valued.6 -

So I've been reading a lot about this #deletefacebook trend across devrant lately. And frankly I'm a little concerned.
As per my understanding, everyone wants to delete Facebook because they're harvesting data. Learning more about us.
While I would agree that I want my privacy. I am a little surprised at how fast this trend is picking up. People are turning a blind eye on everything else they do online just to assume they have privacy.
Let's put this Into perspective, shall we?
You are afraid of letting Facebook harvest your data yet you watch videos on YouTube which is owned by Google. You may even proceed to removing your Google account and use a stripped down version of Chromium to protect yourself from these companies yet you're using a Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android all of which may be harvesting your data behind the scenes. Some may argue that they have stripped down their android phones but don't take into consideration that you are still using apps on your phone that may be collecting your data.
Let's say that you manage to get out of every sort of technology, you should remember that companies like Facebook also check data about you through your friends.
You use platforms like DuckduckGo assuming that they might not be collecting data about you in some way. I don't think there is anyway for you to prove that these privacy companies don't collect our data.
I don't know why everyone seems to be interested in this trend. I absolutely don't see a point in it. If anything, things I see are super relevant to me.13 -
Hello devRant,
I'm new in your community. Okay, not completely new because I try to introduce me in the community and now I think, I know how devRant works and what I could do here.
But who I am?
I'm David from Germany. I'm a hobby developer. I develop lots of stuff, Alexa Skills, Google Actions, Mobile Application for Android and Websites. I'm in a one team member "team"🤣. I develop the background and I "try"😉 to develop the foreground. I develop since 6-7 years and I start with HTML (I know it's not a programming language) but next to HTML I learned CSS. Now, I could programm in CSS, JS, PHP, MySQL, JAVA, C++, PHYTON and I hope I don't forget a language.
But the main question: Why I joined to the devRant community?
The main reason is that I want to see jokes meme and interesting topics. The secondary reason is that I hope I could learn English in a different way. I hope I'm not the worst English speaker/writer.26 -
After using StackOverflow for years, it makes me mad that the devRant community hates on it saying "i get downvotes", "people are assholes". But when you go ahead and see those questions, the Poster took less that 15 seconds to copy/paste their shitcode with poor indentation, no context, no question, no expectation description, and no result description.
YET, THEY DEMAND FREE HELP and for people willing to help, to BREAK THEIR FUCKING EYES reading your non indented and/or non preformatted crap of shitcode
Listen here you little shit, if you don't take at least fucking 5 minutes to let me know what the fuck are you trying to do, what the fuck have you tried, and what the FUCKING SHITFUCK you expected to happen, THEN DON'T GO RANTING LIKE A PRE-PUBERT GREASY KID ON WHY YOUR FUCKING QUESTION GOT DOWNVOTED.
The problem is YOU AND YOUR LACK OF CONSIDERATION TOWARDS OTHER DEVELOPERS, WHO ARE WILLING TO DO FIX YOUR SHITCODE FOR FREE
It took me a while to understand that, when I started posting years ago. But once I learned, it was extremely helpful.
SO SHUT THE FUCK UP, BE HUMBLE, AND WRITE A PROPER FUCKING QUESTION.
WHY AM I RANTING ABOUT THIS, YOU ASK? WELL SOME FUCKTARD JUST POSTED "java - if(Plot Number == booked)then change the color of CardViewBackground color and text color Recyclerview Android", AND THE FUCKING BODY IS JUST A COPY PASTE OF A SHITCODE JAVA CLASS.
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT TO GET WITH THIS???
OOOOHHHHH BUT, I'M SURE AS FFFUUUCKKKK HE'S GOING TO CRY TO DEVRANT ABOUT HIS FUCKING QUESTION GETTING 3 DOWNVOTES.12 -
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v1.4.4.0)
devRant++ badges and extended rants and comments editing time (up to 30 mins for subscribers) are available also on Windows 10.
To subscribe you still need (I hope only for now) the official Android or iOS app.
But if someone is using also the PC Windows 10 version maybe is happy to see that. 😉

I decided to start a new web project tonight. I'm a serial starter-never-finisher, but I thought, "No @AnonymousGuy, you'll work on that android game that's genuinely almost releasable aside from the shitty makeshift UI you gave it while learning Unity."
Fuck yeah. Motivated, I picked up my laptop and put it on my lap. I grabbed my phone, opened DevRant, spent 2 hours reading rants, commenting, +1'ing, and looked down at my laptop. Put it back on the floor. I'm too tired now.
Fuck me and my total lack of self-discipline. 😑3 -

// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta7)
//
After "Active Discussions" (implemented in v2.0.0-beta5), it was time to implement the last missing app section, "Collabs".
This is the biggest update since the start of the public beta, over 100 changes (new features, improvements, fixes).
Changelog (v2.0.0-beta7):
- Support for Collabs
- Notifs Tabs
- & more... read the entire changelog here: https://jakubsteplowski.com/en/...
Microsoft Store: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
I'm really happy to announce that the unofficial UWP client has now 100% of the features available on the official Android and iOS apps (if we don't count Push Notifs 😝 but they will arrive soon too).
It took several months of hard work, but I made it... it's here, it reached the level I wanted to reach since the beginning of this project (May 2016) (if we don't count Push Notifs).
I did it a lot of times, but I think they deserve it everytime, I would like to thank all the people who made this possible, all the active users, who opened issues, suggested features, or just used my app and had fun, posted positives (and negatives, motherfuckers, just kidding, maybe) reviews on Microsoft Store etc.
The entire community who made me want to do this project.
You're amazing guys!
Of course this is not the end of this project, I want to bring the app out of the beta and support it until I will be able to do it, releasing updates almost simultaneously with @dfox and @trogus.
Planned to be done:
- Support for Anniversary Update
- Push Notifs
- Custom Themes
- Close the 15+ issues (features requests, fixes) on the issue tracker on GitHub
- Ranti by @Alice: Your devRant Assistant <- I really hope it will become a thing :)
- Your future suggestions -> post them here: https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
Thanks for the attention,
Good ranting!10 -

I opened devRant and closed it immediately. This is what happened.
Is this related to the Android system or to the devRant app?17 -
Many people say, that devRant made it to their home screens.
On my phone, devRant made it to the quick actions.7 -
everyone was doing clients.. so it was my turn.
watchRant is out!!!

I had plugged in my Android phone to the PC, browsed files from internal storage, Ctrl + X'ed some files from there, Ctrl + V'ed them to the desktop. Nothing special.
Bang. Files travelled to another dimension, absolutely gone from the original location, with no trace or them or any notification.
Who thought it would be a good idea to delete stuff before making sure it's been successfully transfered first?
Fuck you Windows.
Also, hello, its my first rant but I've been lurking devRant for a while now. Loving it here.7 -
Ok is it just me or do GIF never fucking load on Android here on devRant? Like wtf I have a high speed LTE connection at 22Mbs how can it not load a fucking GIF?14

*pulls down Android notifications*
*Scrolls through ≈ virtual 70 cm of devRant notifs*
Anyone else think devRant should have a setting to enable for merging all notifications into one notification card linking to notifs Activity that has running totals of ++s and comments?10 -
After being inspired by the other devRant projects, I started creating my very first android-related project of my own: Viewing rants on my Moto 360 when I'm in a boring meeting5
-
Hey guys!
Just joined devRant! Can't wait to get more involved!
Bored in the lockdown, I built an app which lets you chat with people around you.
Its called Cyrcl!
Built in over ~40 days, I was the sole developer.
Here is the tech stack - React native for the android and ios apps, mongodb and redis for the database, nodejs for the server and aws ec2 for the hosting!
I'd love to get some feedback, or discuss some of the hacks!

*sees a rant about how hot it is in Spa*

Seems to happen a lot in Android 8.1 in particular by the way 🤔5 -
Want to hide this devRant apps on android but how?
Because everytime my wife see this devRant, she say, wtf this app? So many bad word, so many "fuck", you must avoid see bad words too much ,she said. Lol its true but still happy to see it, because its damn true. I love to see people say the truth19 -
Please fix this @dfox :<
When opening devRant after having my phone locked for awhile, the app freezes for 30-180 sec. It usually recovers, but not always. It's painful 🙁17 -
Hey fam, first post in devrant!
Possible client comes up to me and asks me what my mockup for his app looks like. I show it to him on running on my Android device.
Him: where are all the images and descriptions/info?
Me: you didn't give me any. I just made what it could look like if we had images and descriptions.
Him: well talk to some people in the departments and put it in.
Me: but that's not my job. You wanted me to make what it could look like if we actually went through with this project.
Him: okay. How hard would it be to make it for Apple?
Noooooooooo... I'm out.8 -
Is it normal that devRant crashes at first start and works at the second try? Does somebody else has got this problem?14

Devrant and pickpockets
A week ago on Tuesday was heading to meet my client for a demo presentation.Once in town and few metres from our meeting point thought of checking some few rants only for my device to be snatched from my hands and the pick pocket sublimes away.
I composed myself and went to the agreed meeting point only not to meet my client and they was no way I would reach out to him. After making few rounds waiting for him finally gave up and headed for home.
Fast forward I made a resolution not to get a new device till a week ends and had to roll back to a simple device till today.
With today being the D-day I did head to my carrier to get a new device and once the phone was being set up the customer care agent asks which app do you need set up.With no hesitation I gladly say DevRant and she got no idea what's that then after some explaining she says all give it a try with a smile.
I later leave the store a happy man with DevRant being the first app on my device as I ran stock android.
Glad to be back family.1 -
Feels like I found value of "NAN"
i.e, finding non-ranter dev @ devrant!

Warning : Do not use devRant in the lavatory, especially the shower.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?) and saw a post super funny, laughed so hard, and dropped the phone. Now the bottom left of my phone doesnt work.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?), went inside a shower without noticing that i went into the shower, turned on the faucet without noticing that i turned in the faucet, and i was attacked by fierce water with the pressure level 10 (10 is the max). Then i found out my favorite snoopy t shirt, which i wore just before coming into the lavatory, is wet. Completely. And water is dripping from my phone's charging port, but works flawlessly for 5 days.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?), writing this rant, and just because i feel tired, i moved a little bit and got my bottoms all wet which feels so bad...
So the final thing i would like to say is a feature request. Please check whether the user is in the shower or not. Lavatory is fine. But shower is not. You can use thr data retrieved from thw humidity sensor.

Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.
Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?
It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.
I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.
Happy 2016's death everyone, and sorry for the long and boring post!13 -
Hi from Guatemala! I am new to devRant, now it's a must read every day, so much fun! I just landed my first job and I am very nervous/happy. My part of the job is to make the frontend using Flutter, I have some experience on Android but I feel it's very different. Lets see how it goes!11

More than 3GB ram is useless on android phones. Change my mind.
I bought cheap lg g5. It has 4gb ram (my old phone had 1gb ram). I have opened chrome with 4 tabs, an AAA game, devRant, Instagram, a vpn app, android settings and I'm listening music. There is still free 1,2 gb ram. Also this is not my everyday usage. I use maximum 3 apps at same time.22 -
Currently on train, listening music and browsing devRant. Music stops for a while and all I can hear is a person <A> saying: I'm not able to use so shitty operating system. I look up and see iPhone on <A>'s hand. Next to <A> sits an Android user <B>.
Not trying to spread bias about anyone. Just drives me mad, that people are turning down anything unfimilar so easily. Or maybe person <B> is trying to force <A> to use Android. 😲️
Next up on Public Trasportation - Human Behaviour Observations and Analysis: Ackwardness and Mental Get-Away Methods.3 -
This is a proposal for an entirely free and open source rant like site/app.
devrant today has a couple of problems that I hate:
* Posts in the wrong categories (usually by new users)
* Low effort posts in the "recent" feed
* Good posts in the "algo" feed that are too old
* Longtime bugs
* No official code format in comments, ffs.
* Unimplemented features (like inability to search posts in android, or inability to mute posts in web desktop)
* Lack of admin involvement with the community
but it also has some aspects that I like a lot:
* Admins aren't trigger happy to suspend/ban you
* The avatars are awesome and help to associate users to faces
* The ++ system is good enough
* The community isn't too big so you know pretty much everyone
* There's a lot of variety in the roles and techonologies used by users
* Experienced ranters are usually smart
* Super simple UI
* The comments have only one level (as opposed to reddit comment trees)
This project should try to reimplement the good things while fixing the bad things.
I wrote two posts about a possible manifesto, and an implementation proposal and plan.
https://rantcourse.ddns.net/t/...
https://rantcourse.ddns.net/t/...
I think the ideas outlined there are very aligned to concerns of privacy and freedom users here vouch for.
This project is not meant to **purposefully** replace/kill/make users abandon devrant. People can continue using devrant as much as they want.
I'm hosting a discourse site on a 5$ linode machine to discuss these things. I don't know if it's better than just github.
If you feel that you would like to just use github issues, let me know. I'll create a github org tomorrow, and probably setup gitter for more dynamic discussion.21 -
Does anybody else's devRant flash open the closed then open again when they press the app icon on Android?11

devRant bugreport
Im getting more and more bugs in devRant on my LG G2.
- Links cannot be opened
- profiles can not be viewed
- double tapping a rant opens the rant twice (tapping five times opens it 5 times) instead of voting it up.
- once in a while an opened rant shows up again under all the comments (with all comments as well). When this happens its exactly the ammount of comments.
Im not sure where to report this. If @dfox could take a look at this?
Gonna look up my android version in a sec. (edit version: 4.4.2)9 -
Why the hell do so many Android games require internet? I want to play it in undergound when I have nothing better to do! introductory rant
So I am new here, hi! :)
So the devRant android app does not seem to support this mail format:
user+devrant@domain
(the important part being the "+devrant" thing)
Now I waited 2 days for a confirmation mail that wouldn't arrive and was greeted with the "please confirm your fucking mail" popup every damn time.
"Okay, let's just change my mail to user@domain and deal with it", I thought. Guess what: You can't!
So I contacted the devrant team via e-mail.
And I waited.
2 days.
No answer.
Okay.
Delete account, recreate with other mail, be happy.
Don't worry, I'm not mad. It's just really fucking ironic.
Looking forward to a great community! :)5 -
Planned to watch YouTube and read devRant.
well apparently not because the devRant Android app doesn't support split screen.3 -
Ok rant time. This app really needs to stack the notifications instead of popping a new one for every single thing and spam my notifications (Android)3

!Rant
Hello devRant!!
Just released a small little app to share links to your PC directly from your device (Linker).
It uses a Java server running on your PC so there are no middle-men. Everything is open source and on my GitHub.
It's currently in alpha. Basically:
1. Run server on your PC (no UI ATM so run in a console) - defaults: 0.0.0.0:8090
2. Add the server IP-Port in the Android app
3. Share a link from any app through linker
4. Magic 😎
Below are the links if anyone likes the idea and wants to try it out (UI is crap I know! - I had very little time to work on it)
Become tester:
https://play.google.com/apps/...
App:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...15 -
Context: I (among other things) manage some servers for my students' club so I have first-hand information about anything network or server-related that happens. We basically run a big enterprise network and we allow devices to connect if a person has paid their membership and the device's MAC address (be it wireless or ethernet) is recognized by our switches/aruba controllers.
Story: So today a first complaint about "the wifi not working" came in because of Android 10 and its MAC randomization. We deal with MAC randomization on Windows laptops and PCs but I think it is disabled by default so we almost never get this type of complaint.
It took one of the other guys probably 5 minutes to figure out how to disable it... only to discover it is a per-network setting.
The actual question: If there are any network administrators here on devRant - how do you deal with this MAC filtering vs MAC randomization issue?7 -
Sometimes, after devRant makes a new notification, the app crashes with the following stacktrace: http://pastebin.com/yyKL80nB3
-
https://devrant.com/rants/4408042/...
Another one. Next phone is definitely an Android. Fuck this shit.10 -
Why does the 'save image' feature in 'DevRant' Android App take so long? I mean it's just saving the image from ram to storage right.... also the image sizes are pretty small.
Okay just noticed they aren't getting saved anywhere...😅13 -
Thanks Android 14. Now we have to install outdated apk's with adb and a flag 🙄. May apply to devRant too.17
-
Why do Android apps not clear their own irrelevant notifications?
For example: If I mark all notifs as read within the devRant app, or archive an email in Gmail, or read a message in the Jira app, why does it not clear the status bar notification?
Is there a good reason, or is it just often overlooked by developers to perform a cleanup action like this?6 -
Is it just my phone or does the gif never play correctly on the first cycle on devrant Android app.....?4
-
!rant
Request for DevRant android app:
Currently when I tap a rant on the feed I am greeted by an empty screen while it is loading all details. Usually I am on a slow mobile connection so this can take quite a while.
My suggestion is to load the rant text (and image) which you already have from the feed view into the newly created single rant view. This way I can already read and inspect the rant while loading the details.
One objection to this might be the truncated rants. However, when I checked the api when developing http://jsRant.com it turned out that the feed response isn't truncated at all. This is a ui thing, meaning that my suggestion could be implemented fully in the app without backend changes.
Please consider this suggestion @dfox or @trogus since it would make the app a lot more user friendly for those with a slow connection.4 -
I am pretty new to devrant.. and Tomorrow is my first official joining in a MNC as Android Dev... I have done many work in start-ups as intern..But feeling scared for tommorow... Hope for the best.. 😕2

Hello devRant !
I'm a student in computer science, in my last year. In one course, I'm asked to make a contribution on an open source project and participate in it's community.
Since I love the people here, I was wondering if you could point me something not too big I can help with that would be useful. To give you an idea, I have some experience in both Android and web development, but none in anything iOS.
Anyway, thanks for reading and you're awesome ! (Tagging dfox 'cause you know, helping the project ^^)10 -
So you're using devrant from browser. Hmm. You're a man of principles. Understandable. Have a nice day.1
-
Updated the devrant-web block/filter script, it now also filters based on avatar link, to not have random "commented on your rant" leak into your notifications - forgot myself I've had that script, you're of course welcome to block me too, if I annoy you, that'll make both out lives on devrant easier: https://github.com/7twin/...
Best paired with the notification categories too: https://github.com/7twin/... for an overall better experience.
Just make sure to use tampermonkey, as other implementations usually lack half the necessary style injections, selector supports etc.
I might revive my plugin'able cross-platform (desktop, ios, android, web) app too, which would out of the box feature this and many other things.19 -
@dfox feature request, as part of the menu links in a rant, if you could add open in web version.
Why?
Sometimes links aren't clickable on my devrant version (using latest Android version am on Lollipop 😧)
Sometimes really large images don't load
So I usually copy link then paste in my browser6 -
!rant && Android
I thought I found something on devrant app turn out it is an Android thing. Not sure if a bug or not.
I use Android 7.1.2 default keyboard . And Google place a small G logo at the top left corner of keyboard. Clicking that show the gif, emoji, language setting etc menu.
On devrant and a few apps I have tried, that G icon remains on the screen in a transparent and almost not visible state but at the same position after hiding the keyboard. Like a watermark.
At first I thought devrant app background has that mark. Even took a screenshot to share here. Turn out it doesn't show up on screenshot. Because when I zoomed in on the image, the icon remained at same position on screen. So it is showing on Google photo app as well.
Any of you guys have that issue?3 -
I have joined the custom android os side
So far GrapheneOS seems really solid.
Though I would have preferred installing devrant through fdroid.17 -
Why is DevRant consuming so much power in the background? My Android starts ranting about it every time I leave the app minimized.6
-
How did I not know there was a devrant website. Literally thought it was only an Android/iPhone app.3
-
Made my own "devRant" ("inspired hehe") Android app/socialmedia^^
(still in BETA) Not targeting a specific area though. http://stardash.de:4000/
And no not a devRant replacement cuzz its not soo much dev Related :)
Layout has no similarities aT aLl :D
App can only be downloaded on my website cuzz im not 18 yet so i cant publish to the playstore (and also i kinda dislike Google and using anything Google connected in a app e.g. Firebase)
There is a build in update center in the app though.
Server:

Finally installed a custom ROM (dirty unicorns) and added a designated devRant icon in the navigation bar because it's the only app I ever use on this phone5

skyRant, an unofficial devRant client has received a new update!
You can now read devRant's unofficial magazine in the app! Plus, view the latest matrix messages. The user interface has been updated too! [and more]
Read on it over on kbin.melroy https://kbin.melroy.org/m/drbboard/... or even in the new skyRant magazine page!
Note: any previous version of skyRant must be uninstalled before updating. Download from here: https://devrant.com/rants/6573682/...
here's a preview!1 -
I swear devRant must use a custom keyboard parameter on android because it is the only place I have aggressive auto correction... I look at half the stuff I posted and it's just filled with broken English 0.o
-
So this is a fun bug. Oneplus 5 with android 7.1.1, happens when switching from a fullscreen video (Netflix) to devrant5
-
Imagine, you woke up from a deep sleep today 😴💤 and after that you found that all the #IDE in the world are no longer working!!!😱
What will be your first Reaction??
P.S - Don’t be scared, it’s not going to be true😜11 -
Hpw cool would it be if devRant eventually was able to run in a multi window for android? Would really love to play some YouTube videos while scrolling through the feed4
-
The beginning of my small app. Just a small question to the devRant community. As I am relatively new in Android app development I was wondering which layout is okay to work with?
The reason behind this question is that I have found that sometimes I'd move a component(e.g., button, text field) by a small fraction and boom! everything else is messed up.11 -
Did you notice that the scrollbar in the devrant (android) app changes size depending on the lenght/number of posts/comments you can see at the moment? Just scroll down in the posts list and see the scroll bar crawl like a caterpillar 😮1
-
Am I the only one pressing the report problem instead of reply in the Android app?
I'm right handed and report is closest and gets pressed...
Can we do an A/B experiment with switching them? Or maybe a setting?
@dfox4 -
Devrant website UI is so fucking cool! Man I so love it! <3
(the last time I used it on a browser was almost 1 year ago, when it had the mobile-app kinda UI)
It kinda overshadows the mobile app UI. Wish I had more time off from my job and could work on the mobile UI for android.1 -
A new update was just released to AltRant!
This update features:
- Massive UI responsiveness fixes and enhancements, including many fixes for UI bugs, fixes and things that needed tweaking
- A COMPLETE overhaul of all devRant API methods (a switch to my new library, SwiftRant)
- Progress with Android compatibility (replaced incompatible libraries for compliance with Mutata)
- Enhanced security with the Keychain

!!metarant
Every time I write a rant or a comment from my phone, and I want to temporarily switch to another app to search or copy something, it's a fucking Russian roulette.
Will there be enough RAM, or will Android stop devRant thus losing all my content forever? Let's find out! The gun is loaded.
(What about handling the full activity lifecycle like Android requires?)
Now, I would like to attach a picture of the feared "task switch button", but I'm too afraid to lose everything, so fuck it3 -
Light theme + inverted colors = devRant supporter dark theme. Also, when you browse through Android in this mode, you can get some design inspiration.5
-
I opened "About" screen
I read "Write native Android/IOS apps with JavaScript"
A second later: "devRant stopped unexpectedly"
Okay :D -
So ive made some big improvements to skyRant the Android devRant client and the new version is out on Github!
There's now a fully working Avatar Builder (which actually took a while since it was not really documented to this point) and search, profile editing and community projects page have been added. :).

Hmm, just noticed lifelog recognises devrant as communication. Found that intresting for some reason. Also dr is the only "communication" app i use for extended period along with sync for reddit.
Also, its 7.50 in morning, not evening. I am not that lazy. -
I've read that devRant is using javascript and the likes, what I'm wondering is how one uses javascript for android apps. I know PhoneGap exists, but I also read that there is some performance issues with it. what does devRant use?2
-
In places devRant Android App needs to clear activity stack... We see extra screens when we hit back, for example, when we modifiy a rant or a comment, we see the older one as well which is redundant.2

I broke my phone so now I've revived an old S5360. Does anyone happen to have a devRant APK for Android 2.3 on ARMv6? I figured if Facebook doesn't work then it's high time I start binge scrolling devrant instead.3
-
Holy shit. I'm on the devrant app and I just noticed that the scrollbar on the right does this weird worm thingy.
As I scroll up and down, the scrollbar size keeps changing. It's a cool effect where it twitches like a worm.
Is that an android o feature or something or did @dfox or @trogus add that shet.2 -
Does this mean devRant has no icon for Pie apps switcher?
Or is it only happening to me?

Just installed Android P. It would appear that the screen transitions in devRant had changed. Anyone else experienced this?4
-
I installed this app called Android P rotation. Link below -

This is how devrant behaves when turned to landscape mode -
Many people adviced me to clone apps so I can learn more about Android development. So I started with my favorite app, devRant :)

Just realized that touching the title "Rant" reloads a given rant. Been hitting the refresh button4

Dear @dfox and @trogus
I'm writing this here because reporting such issue to GitHub doesn't seem to do it's justice.
It's been happening for like HALF A YEAR.
AND IT'S YET TO BE PATCHED.
WHY. WHEN I CLICK THE BACK BUTTON ON MY PIXEL 2 XL (ANDROID 9). ALWAYS CLOSES THE APP?!?!?
Yes, this is a rant about DevRant, I have no complaints other than this exact one.
It's been happening for way way WAY too long, and never been patched.
Please don't reply to me "why don't you report it on GitHub?" ITS BEEN REPORTED OK?!
I've always loved DevRant since I first joined, but this issue is preventing me from browsing it every time. It's jus irritating.
Please, @dfox and @trogus, try and for once take the time to try and fix it.
Thank you.5 -
is the scrolling on the comments view of a rant in the devRant Android app really twitchy/laggy for anyone else? like the scrolling is not smooth at all.2
-
No devRant, i do not want to install your App. Let me use your website on my mobile browser without desktop mode and without the need to login.5
-
Android 12, stop telling me every other day which app has permission to access my location in the background. I know, I gave permission, and I want to keep the setting "Allow all the time". Where's the "don't ask again" option?
And why does this happen for an app released by the German federal government (about once a week) but never, ever for your shitty Google Maps that always seems to know where I've been (at least if don't leave my phone at home, which is hard to do in times when you have to show your digital proof of vaccination everywhere yo go). Fucking Android, fuck the Android 12 clunkiness (inspired by Apple's iOS?) and fuck the fucking notifications. This is my phone, I paid for it, I own it, I want to turn off this bullshit. Wait, Google, once I find time to get back to LineageOS/Cyanogenmod you will never see a trace of my digital existence again. Oh, and fuck your "digital wellbeing" as well! At least you let me turn that off. Yes, I know, I am not grateful, but that's what devrant is for, isn't it? Fuck you, Google!2 -
I gues devrant android app got an update recently [last week?]? Notifications suddenly started to work. Yayy!
But in-app notifications broke. More often than not either tab in notifs [all, ++, comments, etc.] loads nothing and there's no way to re-fetch data manually. If _all_ breaks I have to browse each category manually to see what's new.
Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?
Galaxy s7 edge, stock everything.
P.S. I rarely get to rant about devrant :) -
I could do with do advice of the nice people of devRant!
I want to develop a mobile app for iOS and Android, however creating native apps is just too much. I've found a solution for cross platform development such as xamarim, cordova, appcelarator.
I'm just curious to what your experiences have been and which would be a good route to go?10 -
Ive been looking for a contact manager for Android with a certain feature, but can't find anything for it.
Ive got quite lot contacts on my phone and some of them are from people online (devRant and other communities) as well as family, friends, old classmates etc.
Sometimes I forget who is who and thus Ive to add people as: "Jane (devRant)", "Jane Doe (Niece)", "Jane (Classmate school A)", "Jane (Classmate school B)"
Now I am looking for an app that allows for adding tags to a contact (preferably multiple) to avoid polluting names with something behind the name.
I dont need any cloud saves for it, although I would like it to be able to export/import it to csv, xml or json.
Does anybody know an app that fits my needs?3 -
Whelp, I made the switch to android about a week ago. Didn't go two days without getting malware on it. I only browse hacker news and used devRant, standard messaging app, no root, so no shady things, just fairly standard things besides devRant. When I called Samsung support, they said it was a known issue and sent me some links to some forums where people were having the same issues. After digging through those threads, there was an official answer from Samsung saying they weren't going to fix the issue (at least in any foreseeable future). That's unacceptable for a phone that was released less than a year ago.
I'm done with Samsung phones for good. I might come back to Android on a google phone.
I hate how Android is distributed and the manufacturers don't take ownership of their issues. They just work on the new phone without caring for anything older than 6 months. If I had to get a new phone every time a major security issue was found and the company refused to fix it, I'd spend more money than on an iPhone.
It seems like Google keeps their devices up to date better, presumably because they have better control of OS releases. But non-google Android devices are dead to me.
Back to my iPhone for now...

Can anyone give me links to any Devrant API? Thinking of starting work on creating a Native Android Devrant app as a side-project.3

Oh!! Got succeed sending Push Notifications using Firebase cloud base messaging(FCM) after struggling a lot with
Google Cloud Messaging(GCM). Thank you Google, devrant. The reason for my excitement is i am an Electronics engineer and new to android. -
Every time I open devRant, I have >0 Notifs. Why am I never notified by Android about this anymore? I used to get one Android notification for each devRant notif in the list. Now, my phone never goes off for any of them and nothing from devRant appears in my android notifications. I did not change my settings. Running latest app version on Android 6.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯7 -
Devrant bug: If the screen size is changed (by resizing app in multi-view) content disappear.
Apps should be able to cope with screen size changes during runtime - check android documentation, especially for Nougat.

I kinda hate brand bias, when people don't have an open mind when judging new products.
some people are ready, up late, waiting for next apple keynote just so they have stuff to rip off.
"animoji is so pointless"
then don't use it buddy :)
"apple tracks you"
https://maps.google.com/locationhis...
"apple product limits you, google products allow you to do a lot more"
- apple iphone:
· download apps
· surf the web
· make calls and send texts
· do things offline
· use the native devRant app
pixelbook/chromeos:
· browse the fucking web
· there's a fucking 'write protect' screw in the motherboard so you can't fuck anything up
(yes I know, generally android is more customizable, but you'd expect more from a laptop over a computer)
I'm not an apple fanboy, I could make this rant about android hate, too, but because a product isn't for you doesn't mean it's not for everyone.6 -
Devrant app cant even open ten rants in a row without crashing. Oh of course you have android inside Kubernetes running on top of arch Linux on your phone and it works fine, please fuck off.16

Is it possible to develop a wear app for android (devrant) as a third party app? I read that, normally, the main app should process data (like using the API, parsing it and getting the needed data together) and just sends them to the wear to process. Writing a wear app as a third party would mean that the wear app had to calculate the stuff, which is in Googles opinion back practise I guess....?2
-
I noticed a bug on devrant app on Android. Or is it a feature? Haha.
When you comment on a rant and then press Modify to change your comment, when you edit and save the edited comment you get to the updated one. If you press back you get to the previous one (not updated comment). If you try to reopen the rant you commented you see only the updated one.
So....here's a bug. What do I win?4 -
Is there a devRant client for android that works better then the official one? I saw devRant native, i love the animations but sadly its incomplete.6

My OP5 got a system update to Android Oreo today. FUCK YOU Google for removing the cute blob emojis! I'm not using emojis that often, hell I normally wouldn't care at all, but the new ones are so ugly I wanna rip my eyeballs out everytime I see them. I already miss those adorable blobby bastards so much that I'm considering going back to Nougat :(
By the way: hello Devrant and the best wishes for 2018 to everyone!2 -
Hey devRant team, I saw the new designs and they are awesome. Actually I just started learning Android App Development and I was curious what stack do you guys use for devRant Android App. And while we are on this can you guys share the stack you use for IOS app and Web app. Thank you and by the way you've done a really good job with android app.6
-
Is it just me or is devrant resetting its views on android as soon as you leave the app?
Basically if you switch app and then back to devrant, youll see the home loading rants, instead of returning to the state you were in before. -
does devrant app on Android have some issue with images?
I see empty block on each image, and I have really good internet connection9 -
Am i the only one having a lot of problems with devRant on Android atm? For an example: When i click the 'back' button i only see the background, bo rants :/6

What needs to be said is that the devrant app is way more stable than instagram. And this without development since years. (I'm talking about android)4

Question:
How did you discover devRant?
For me I was looking for an Android sql server to install from the play store when I found it..5 -
There was cool ad at the top of the screen (of devrant android app) with link to https://www.devrant.io/get. I've clicked it, but the page is constantly reloading in browser.4
-
Does any one feel devrant is slow to load rants and images on mobile app? Tried both cellular and multiple wifis. Internet doesn't seem to be the problem here
This seems to be happening for a few weeks now8 -
Does anyone else get a buggy interaction with devRant where your phone's background becomes the loading screen of the app? Or is it just me and my buggy phone?
-
I hate when application is lying to me. For example when it says my message has proper length, in this case maximal allowed length (showing 0 characters remaining), but then throws some random error message like "Your comment is probably blank.". But when I apply some magic, like when I remove 2* characters from it, suddenly it's working as expected. (Removing 1 character isn't working, hence the magic.)
PS: This does devRant Android app and web version as well. -
Is there a way to get devRant for android without google play?
Sites as APK mirror normally have all free apps, but I see devRant is missing. And I dont see any other legitimate source which might have the apk.5 -
# bug
There seem to be some push notification weirdness with my device.
push notifications are shown like couple of hours after I've seen them in Notifs. up to like 6-7 hours.

When you download a new android launcher, setting all up, installing a new icon pack, BUT there is always one app which icon differs from icon packs design cause icon creators never thought that I'll use devRant on my Android -_- Anyone helphee?1

Why does the devrant android app not compatible for newer android versions.
And if it doesn't... Then why does it tell me to download the app on the web in android while blocking me from using it.

It works fine on my iPad.4 -
Hang on image selection dialog.
I'm on Android (MIUI 12) and for a long time I've not been able to select an image. Whenever I go into the picker it slows to a crawl. Even when cancelling the pick devrant is all but frozen. I have to kill it and start again to get back. Selecting an image will make it just show a black screen. Does anyone else experience this? -
I'm not sure if anyone else discovered this, but the devRant Android app doesn't delete abandoned comments, so if you start to reply to someone's comment (automatic @mention) and back out without typing anything, the next reply you hit on the same thread will append the @mention after the previous one. You can also insert a commenter's name into a comment fairly easily this way. I am relatively new here, and am curious if this is the desired behavior.
While this has potential to be useful, I would appreciate the option to clear a comment box entirely, since I often abandon a comment part-way because I re-think how I want to say something very often.2 -
Dear devRant Devs,
Please save last tab the user was on and when starting the app please go back to this tab. Also possible by adding a new settings entry for this... -
[please read my rant, i want attention lol, i am pretty sure you know me ^v^]
My devRant visits have decreased tremendously due to high amounts of school work, but finally I am doing something productive developer stuff!
There is this app that allows you to watch educational videos offline, but that only works in android, but I don't have an android tablet, and I don't want to watch videos in my S8, so I am trying to boot android from usb, stick in my surface pro 6 which i am gonna order soon, download the app there, and watch videos!
I knew OS stuff was complicated but it is way more..... Yeah, complicated than i thought. All those fuzzy words, grub, partition, format, sectors, qemu, etc...
Uhhh
And I have only windows, which is a plus since i can use easy2boot, a godsend utility to make bootable usb with any iso easily (not an ad) , but the minus is that i have limited testing capabilities, forcing me to install virtualbox eith vmeu or whatever that thing is called...
But what I really want to say in this rant which is completely out of control, I'd like to thank the easy2boot support team who was very helpful for me to understand their utility, and a random guy in phoenix os subreddit who told me where to start.
If you read until here thanks! If you have experience booting from usb wih surface, or any windows machine let me know your experience since i want to know more about it, and if i encounter problems, i can look at your comments, thanks!7 -
@dfox There's something wrong with bluetooth keyboards in the devrant android app.
1) If you switch from the onscreen keyboard (I'm using Hacker's Keyboard) to a bluetooth one while on the rant/comment editing/posting screen the exit and post buttons become unresponsive. (Pressing the back button on your phone is okay though. If you then reopen the rant it works again)
2) switching back to the onscreen keyboard replaces everyting you've written with the tags ...?
(Android 9)3 -
Fuuuuu I tried sideloading the devrant app on my Android watch but it kept crashing so I did a logcat over ADB and saw they use function that don't work on watches. So Damm sad I wanted to watch some rants way more sneaky5

The biggest problem with error reporting is that devrant closes android exception form before I can actually send that data...1

Good Experience -
1.)Became proficient in Web development!
2.)Wanted to learn it for a very long time but didn't know where to start, but this year got opportunities to work on some good projects!
3.)Also got to lead a awesome team of good developers in my college!
4.) Got to work on a awsome internship with a very nice employer :)
5.) Became a Devrant Supporter :D
Bad Experience -
1.) Had to face shit ass seniors who blamed me and my team all the time for their inefficiencies.
2.) Team had developed many good projects in android and web for the college, but the stupid seniors failed to implement them,it was a big mood!
3.) I had planned to learn ML and improve my competitive coding and also finish my game, but failed to do so :(.
Hopefully 2018 will be productive:)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🎆🎄🎅 -
just need some help from the devRant community.
i don't have an android tablet and I want some screenshots of my app in a tablet for it to be optimized for tablets on play store.
Can anyone here with a tab having android 4.4+ help me by taking the screenshots in his/her tablet?12 -
Devrant is so fucking broken. Sign out and go to devrant.com. No fucking way to login, Two fucking identical install buttons in the top right for your fucking crap iOS and Android apps, only way to fucking tell which is which is to hover over link.
I sign in by using a search engine to direct link to a random rant then I can login and post this, but now for some reason /feed and /stories fail to load too many redirects.
Even a worse eXperience than reddit.8 -
Anyone playing the 'hacked' game on android ? despite the name, It's just about logic and I have been kind of addicted to it for the past week ( the plot seems purposely built off every bullshit hollywood producers thrown at us for decades regarding hacking) just wanted to thanks the dev for it, maybe they ' ll pass by devRant and see this ;)2

After latest update of devRant android app,
Button to check collabs on bottom bar has been removed, and filter is showing only 10 collabs.2 -
Hey DevRant Fam! <3, i really hope everyone is doing very well!, its been awhile since i have posted my last 'rant', i have just started another Uni semester and can i just say WOW it's gonna be tough!.
Learning Android (Java) and web Development both Project based! (No exams..YES), so as I'm now currently downloading Android Studio would anyone kindly give me some advice on A.S (android studio)? :D, now may i just say i absolutely love learning new things and find it exciting.....
So everyone, i personally want to thank you for reading my so called rant, thank you for taking your time :D, i'm always very happy to listen and read your opinions/advice :D. I Hope everyone has an amazing day/night wherever you may be!

I noticed that there's no scroll position indicator on Android. Would be nice to be able to see exactly how far down I've scrolled and how much time I've wasted on devRant. Food for thought.5

Just wondering if anyone is noticing high battery drain since installing devRant Android app?
I've lost over 50% battery this morning and it's showing high use by this app.22 -
I fucking hate when devrant refreshes the feed when I pull down but not release my finger. Especially most of the times I already start reading the second rant but it all goes away with a flick...
Happened many times I even started changing my screen touching habits in order not to fall into this pit but still sometimes it happens and arrrgh.
I like sorting by algo and rarely use recent. I’m on ios so I’m not sure if it also happens on android but damn so annoying.3 -
Hey guys,
I'm studying in college and just got introduced to Android development and firebase. It's wonderful. And I'm wondering for an app like devRant would it be a good idea to store the data in firebase... If not, what else options are there? Also, I'm planning to work on a similar project for my sophomore year.
Any ideas guys?2 -
Tell me please, how to use devRant as desktop-website with my tablet. How can I avoid the app? Dont like to install it on every device ...9
-
Not a rant but just curious to see what mobile OS do all you devs on devRant use?
I recently moved from Android to iOS. Doing so has made me realise how much I loved using Android but due to its inherent stuttery lag, inferior standby time and memory management, I will be staying with iOS for now.
What are your reasons on using the mobile OS that you are using now?7 -
After a damn amount of time I've been considering it (a lot of data in there and I'm lazy), I've finally wiped the android clean (dalvik+cache+the rest). Happened exactly what I was expecting:
All in-app errors (even devRant feed) magically disappeared. So, if you experience something like that, don't be lazy and wipe.
Also there's speeding up of the system and other pros of wiping, but those aren't that important like getting rid of errors ^^5 -
Does anyone else have problems with devRant? Whenever I exit a rant and go back to the 'main window', where the rants are supposed to be listed, I get an empty page (with the typical devRant background but without the loading animation). Rants won't load for me then.
Rants won't load for me except for the first time when I open the app. After I clicked on a rant and go back, it won't load.
Using a OnePlus 3 with Android 7.1.1, in case that matters. :)6 -
Does anyone else having an issue with playing GIFs on devrant Android? Mine done play when I click them and the phone just halts. However, they're working just fine on desktop.
Phone: Nexus 5X
Android: 7.1.1

Where do the images get saved to on devrant (on Android)? I've saved so many memes but don't actually know where they go12
-
Hey all,
Where does devrant for Android store downloaded images? And yes I allowed saving and storage access.
Android data folder is empty. Bug?
It did work before i switched to Android 8. My new phone is also android 8, and it also does not work.
Greetings17 -
Hello,
I'm new to devrant. I want to develop some short code snippets (any language any code) on my Android phone in some spare time. I want to have someone to talk about them, maybe even with chat or video over the internet.
Who wants to be my buddy and join in?3 -
Is it me or images are not preloading on devrant? I have them enabled in settings but most images don't load unless I open them. Really annoying. Using android.2
-
It seels that there's a hiccup with devRant Android app. Web version seems to work fine. Anyonw else experiencing the same?5
-
Did my upvote crash devRant... Now where's that post again..
https://devrant.com/rants/4849574/...
Hm... Maybe Android just didn't like that I upvoted that...
Which reminds me of my rant now.
In Android 12 after upgrading, the Square button (recent apps) stops sometimes and then I need to reboot to get it back...
But instead, so I didn't have to reboot, I switched to Gesture navigation... Which actually isn't that bad after getting used to it?
So maybe this was another Google truck to force their way.... -
If I press the attach image dialogue in the devRant android app, then don't select anything and back out instead, the app shits itself. Takes ages to respond, I usually just go to the task switcher and dismiss the task and open the app again.
Anyone else?
s10, android 11.
And if so, could someone else raise an issue on github? I don't want to associate this profile with anything that's demonstrably me.12 -

Hey everyone!
I'm thinking of building an open-source React Native app for DevRant just as a fun project. I came across an unofficial API documentation and also a wrapper.
https://devrant-docs.github.io/
https://github.com/danillouz/...
If anyone has used these, kindly let me know your experience and which one is better.
PS: I have no intention to publish or earn money from this project. Anyone who is interested can jump into the project and help in making it better. If enough people want to use it, I can compile an apk/ipa for people to download later on.devrant react native devrant app open source community project community app github android devrant api ios -
Is this a devRant bug?
I have a persistent (1) on my in-app notification bell (Android). I can't find any unread notification. It should be a comment notification. Maybe somebody generated such a notif, my phone picked it up, and then the other person undid the action that lead to the notif? (E.g. un-++, remove a comment or mention, delete their account, ???).
I see the (1) notification to on the web, and I can't find the actual notification there either!5 -
I am mainly using devrant to consult with more experienced developers, instead of using it for cool IT jokes, and I am sorry but anyway, in 2016 would you recommend specializing in full stack web dev or android? (I have a lot of experience with Java, Spring and Android Studio). Thanks in advance :)
P. S. And by experience I mean personal projects1 -
What languages and tools do I need to build an android app similar to devRant(same functionality)? Please help. Badly need advice for my next project.

Hey devrant looking for advice. I am looking for an online course to learn iOS development. I have experience with android development so not completely nee to developer scene but have no iOS experience
