I like backend development because I love how rewarding it feels to write systems that are consumed by multiple frontends. It always feels like a lot is at stake and small optimization can make a lot of user experiences faster.4

Had an interview this morning..
Interviewer - have you used github?
Me - yes
Intw - so, you have a profile on github?
Me - yes (** in mind, I don't think github will allow me without that **)
Intw - how many commits have you done?
Me - ** what kinda qust is this ** well,... Yeah... Umm.. A lot! 🙄
Intw - how much is a lot for you?
Me - umm... Well... A lot lot... So many... I mean a lot of... **Long pause** .... You see, I'm a commitment type of guy. ** Wtf did i just say?**
Intw - Whattt!! Then he laughed.
... and I used to think that my days of embarrassing interviews are over. I'm not going to that company doesn't matter what happens. Shitt 😐10 -

Fuck China.
Fuck the U.S. government.
Fuck the UK and Australia and all the other governments for taking advantage of the crisis of the last two years to get more power and money for their elites.
Fuck them all for starting COVID with their unsanctioned and unethical “gain of function” lab experiments and creating so much chaos that nobody really has a chance anymore at living the life they had dreamed of or so carefully planned for.
Fuck them for the out of control spending and money printing and inflation and even messing around with trying to regulate and tax crypto so we don’t have any kind of escape valve to live a normal, happy life.
Because of them, I can’t even enjoy my time off work. Even if I could plan a vacation that wouldn’t have to be canceled due to an outbreak or resultant supply chain issues, I can’t travel without severe restrictions that make it miserable and not worth the trouble.
Fuck them for making everyone into stupid monkeys fighting over opinions about data that is incomplete, misunderstood, misrepresented, or downright fixed toward a specific pharma-fascist authoritarian outcome.
And fuck them especially for being hypocrites and going to parties and generally not following their own rules they made for us when they think we’re not watching, and then persecuting and prosecuting us when we dare do the same.
Fuck ‘em all. I’m so done.20 -
Come to think of it, Java really reminds me of fidget spinners.
A lot of people love it.
A lot of people hate it.
And then there's me who just doesn't give a fuck.3 -

Guys, unlike a lot of fresh and volatile developers here, i don't get angry at a lot of stuff
but people who play the "I'm older than you" card really really r e a l l y make me upset.4 -
I was about 17 years old had tried wood & metal craftsmanship but never liked it, so I spoke with a counsellor and mentioned I like computers as I play a lot of games.
That counsellor laughed at me ( a shut in that rarely says anything ) and told me I'm too stupid..
Since then, I have scored almost pure top grades without any particular job goal.
But eventually met a good friend who wanted to be a Web developer, so I simply followed the same path and kept on reaping top grades lol.. :)
As Ana says in overwatch, "Never stop fighting for what you believe in."2 -
You know it's gonna be a good Friday when the dev team takes a work trip to the store to get beer.
Happy Friday everyone!2 -
Why are so much software developers working on open-source projects, but only so few designers?
A proper UI could increase the userbase a lot. I am quite sure that a lot of projects could benefit from good designers.12 -
New discovery: The best way to deal with tight deadlines is to work no more than 4 hours a day, sleep a lot, vibe a lot and using the newfound energy make the client move the deadline.3
-
i came to workspace, my boss said:
"wtf are you doing at here?
u know, we got new big project!!"
and continued:
"why you wasting your time by coming here? and why you are not drunk already?!!"4 -
Just had a customer warn me he has "made" a lot of people, but also "broken" a lot of people... Okay then!5

self-appointed managers during daily :
SAM : a lot of meetings
SAM : a lot of code review
SAM : a lot of team management
Actual manager : But on what task have you been working?
SAM : a lot of meetings2 -
It's the start of my career - I got an exciting internship offer. There is a lot of work though. I must say, devRant is helping a lot ;-)

Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3
-
Thanks a lot guys! You are really awesome! :')
I promise (in a non-js way) I will use that stressball and take a lot of care with it.
Thanks to all the 203 cool devs that ++ my rant!! -
"The word ‘tokenizer’ makes a lot more sense, but ‘lexer’ is so much fun to say that I use it anyway."
No wonders people think a lot of programming subjects are intimidating.3 -
When you put a lot of time and effort into writing intricate code, and after a lot of work, the finished project is a beutiful creation.3

Three of us work on an app. I made a mockup interface to develop the functionality, a second person made the designed interfaces and a third made the API. Now the design got included in the app.
I had a conversation with the third person.
He: Do you need a list of what works and what doesn't?
Me: If you have free time...
*2 seconds later*
He: Nothing except login. Have fun!1 -
Why you would sell your company to Microsoft too!
1. Your company is so succesful, the valuation is so high, only a handful of companies could buy it.
2. Running a company takes a shit load of energy, and most normal people hope to relax at one point in their life.
3. People at the head of major international companies are not normal humans. They like do over work and they have one goal. Be number 1.
So good successful people sell to evil and more succesful people.
And when i say evil, i really just mean that being number 1 is more important than ethics.
Edit: spelling.7 -
Learned basic Java syntax and created an Android app by reading a lot of posts on stackoverflow
Also a lot of trial and error... -
I won't talk shit about frameworks and libraries anymore, tried to make mine myself and it's damn hard, needs to pour a lot of time in the making, a lot of research, etc.5
-
I feel like a lot of devs, last years self included.
Need to realize, a great Dev is not necessarily one that Ace in code.
But rather one that can convey and understand the problems they're to solve and more importantly the perspective of the end user.3 -
Working with acutal BigData. Will be ''promoted'' to a new team where I will work on a system wrote in php+mysql with literal millions of requests and database rows. We are currently seeing server crashes around once a week on peak usage. Stack is a vps 64gb ram server + i dont know how many cpu/ cores. Apache, php, mysql.Best ways to optimise and adapt in this case? Kafka? Rabbitmq?ngnix? More hardware?21
-
that awesome moment when you get back from holiday and resolve all the issue the team had while you were gone :)5

If you plan to learn a framework, type his name into job search engines to know if there is a lot of demand ... You'll save a lot of time and energy !2

We bought an expensive middleware which helped development speed and stability a lot. Something did not work and after a week I located the bug in the middleware. Support was adequate and the bug got fixed after my report.
I'm not mad at the developers, because bugs happen, and this one was hard to catch, even with tests.
On the other hand I have to explain my boss what took so much time.
It really wasn't my fault, but I also don't want to shame the middleware company, because it will make it harder for me to buy their stuff (and I quite like their products) or even any software at all. -
... I really truly hate with a passion..
when you've agreed on one solution and when it's done, but not approved and deployed..
suddenly decides "oh it needs, x-y-z that I said it won't need"..
Mind you, that x-y-z things mean rewriting a lot of it...
Oh well, at least I get paid for the extra hours to be spent.1 -
Hello to everyone. Im new here , but i heard a lot of great things about dev rant and i hope i will learn a lot of new things and solve a lot of problems i have with your help.5

I'm addicted to world of warships right now😫
Which game you guys plays a lot ?
Used to play cs 1.6 a lot too 😝
Yeah I know 1600 BC Game but it's still really fun😄17 -
In 2019 I want to get better at PHP & React & stop being afraid to try & fail! I do a lot of front end work, backend still baffles me a lot. Time to get uncomfortable! 👩🏼💻🤓3
-
My thumb hurts / is exhausted from lots of typing (phone) and writing (school). Any tipps besides seeing a doctor? (I will if this bug isn't fixed 'till friday or so)2

Client be like:
Hello,
could you please restore our database from today's backup?
At a first glance - nothing out of the ordinary. Daily backups are standard...
Until we get the backed up snapshot running.
MySQLDump is somehow... Stuck. It... Doesn't seem to be doing... Like, anything. For ages. Wtf.
So we check the database. Connect, change scheme and... The commandline tool gets stuck, too. Weird.
So a layer lower, we check the datadir and... ls... After also getting stuck for a bit, lists about 500k files O_o
Yea, dumping a database with roughly ~250k tables is not fun. No wonder it takes ages.8 -
First month at the new job and it's alright. Fine. Totally O-K. And you know what? I'm happy with that. Like, happy-in-general happy. Yikes! I've got a good routine going where I actually do stuff that matter to me and I can also see some opportunities on the horizon; a bit like a Choose Your Own Adventure kind of thing. I've also got this thing - a date? - planned with someone I bumped into while running an errand. What the fuck is happening... 😅✌️1

So I've noticed there's a lot of php hatred here on devRant xD Does anybody know of any modern php communities or forums to join? I've searched for a few but a lot are outdated.22
-
Why is there so much stuff to learn and know? I just want to be able to do everything myself in a week.8
-
i get a lot of anxiety if i didn't push my code or save somewhere remote, especially if i make a lot of changes
is it just me?9 -
Just scrolled down my list of rants
I didn't even notice how much I've posted already
I like devrant, a lot1 -
Is there anything nicer than having home office Friday and meeting up Monday only to discover that you were excluded from a meeting that Friday and they decided on a bunch of things that invalidates a lot of your past weeks work, making it top priority to resolve and now exceeding deadlines…3
-
1. Kids school compound while waiting for the kid
2. Stopping the car on the sidewalk during rush hour for a hot fix
3. Parking lot of a marriage
I do this a lot.5 -
You got it all wrong, it's being a dev that helped me a lot in a lot of domains: organization, logic, basic maths that I kept struggling with for years, and the love to learn new stuff everyday
-
Wonder when this will be done... seems it's going to be awhile until i restart my PC... and Windows gets to update...

Dan Abramov
He more or less invented React? Or at least he's made a lot of improvements to its state management functionality. He offers to have lunch with random people on Twitter. He probably knows a lot and reads a lot. He seems like a cool down-to-earth dude.4 -
A lot of people listen to music while coding, so do I. But what do you listen to? I listen to a lot of Linkin Park and Fall out Boy.7
-
I hate so much when i write a lot of number of lines in my code and when i start the debugger there are a lot of errors...... I Forget to initialize a variable 😑
-
I started writing my own programming language. It resembles LISP a lot but doesn't have a lot of features. It works and I learned a lot by creating it, but I wish I had the motivation to make it a useful language.1

Hey guys!
I have a question
When I'm coding sometimes I get sick
I mean this is getting me when I'm worried if the deadline coming day after day, I get nausea a lot
By a lot I mean a lot
I can't even look at my computer screen or even touch the keyboard
Is it only me or it's normal ?!!
I think it's stress13 -
How to know if someone is C# ninja?
when you read his code you’ll find a lot of Foo<T> , TModel, TKey and a lot of reflection5 -
How can you learn a lot of things?
i'm trying to learn kotlin and i think i'm forgetting python.
is it happens to you?
or i'm stupid?9 -
I’m being taught some network programming, and my friend/teacher is helping me on the project to teach me, and I’m learning a lot but I don’t feel like I’ve personally done a lot.
I mean I’ve debugged and asked questions and make sure I understand what’s happening but I still don’t feel like I’ve done a lot. :/5 -
What is the best laptop for development?
Especially if you work a lot with virtualization, containers, the cloud, and a lot of systems programming. And you like to simulate a lot of distributed environments on locally?3 -
I have 5 months working on a project that I was assigned and I have already worked with React with Redux, Sagas, Reselect, React Native, Jest, Protractor and PHP.2

Gotta love recruiters who add you on LinkedIn with a great opportunity to work for a lot less and a lot harder than your current job on a position not even relevant to your work.
-
Get a good deal with a coffee suplier, you will neeed a lot but a lot of coffee to keep working litle those humans do.1
-
Not really a programming rant, but still very annoying. It is almost 2017 and so I will need to get my health insurance sort out. You would think that it isn't that big of a deal, but almost everything can only be done by calling the insurance company. Even when you can log in with digID (a dutch digital identification system), you still can't change the insurance on the internet.
Come on guys we live in 2016! Something simple like insurances should you be able to fix online!4 -
Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to get Oracle database working on a Linux distro preferably fedora? Any help is appreciated3
-
Very specific for r, but Hadley Wickham wrote tons of stuff about how to build packages and has inspired me a lot. He uses a lot clean code practices and writes very clearly.
-
The mind of The Flash. You know, able to think quickly and fast. Then I can solve a lot problems in a nick of time, or learn a new concept or language quickly.
Yeah, that'll help me a lot.1 -
The ability to generate to generate all of my data transfer objects/, data persistence objects/entity, and unit tests for those.
I love having solid data models before I begin to work with behavioral models but it's a lot of manual work. -
I improved a lot as a dev when I looked at code I'd written and compiled. You can learn a lot from looking hiw your habits and style affect the overall program.
-
Haskell would say from its heart:
People who don’t talk about me, don’t know me.
People who talk a lot about me a lot, don’t know me as well.1 -
I've been wondering a lot lately: what is a toxic relationship? How do you know if you are in one?
A lot of stories sure sound clearcut from the outside, but its not as simple...4 -
Lockdown has got me reading a lot of books. Books about business or startups are a lot faster for me to read. It’s like reading a story book and I’m done in a week. But reading technical books (like I’m currently reading SICP aka wizard book) is a lot more heavy duty mental work. Y’all got any pointers for me about this?2
