I was explaining git and Github to one of my friends during our boring maths class when he asked : "What is the difference between git and Github?". Just then another friend of mine sitting in front turns out and said : "It's like the difference between porn and Pornhub".17

So I accidentally published my AWS keys to GitHub, stupid me. I realize this the next day.
$ git reset
$ git push
Reset keys in AWS
I was too late. Bot already stole the keys and started up 53 EC2 instances. Racked up $4000+ of compute time (probably Bitcoin mining, I'd assume)
4 weeks later, I finally have this shit disputed and settled.
Don't test with hardcoded keys. You WILL forget about them. Env vars always. That is all.29 -
Microsoft is investing in Git, VSCode, Electron, Github, Bash-on-Windows. Things that decentralize and help prevent lock-in.
Apple is taking away the only universal cross platform graphics system (OpenGL), locking developers into Metal, and taking away our escape keys.25 -

Is Microsoft going to ruin GitHub? NO!
Are we going to get amazing git integration in VSCode? ABSOLUTELY!
They're a 600 billion dollar company and they're one of the leading contributors to open source. They know the community they are handling and how fragile it is. This is just a developer trust move from them.
Stop pretending this is the end of GitHub, cause it isn't.23 -

Why the fuck did I set up GitHub and all the deploy scripts if your just going to fucking ignore it and edit directly on the server?!?

Crazy how git got its name:
The name "git" was given by Linus Torvalds when he wrote the very first version. He described the tool as "the stupid content tracker" and the name as (depending on your mood):
- random three-letter combination that is pronounceable, and not actually used by any common UNIX command. The fact that it is a mispronunciation of "get" may or may not be relevant.
- stupid. contemptible and despicable. simple. Take your pick from the dictionary of slang.
- "global information tracker": you're in a good mood, and it actually works for you. Angels sing, and a light suddenly fills the room.
- "goddamn idiotic truckload of sh*t": when it breaks

I forced my friends to use git(hub) as vcs because their project was in a usb-to-usb state, which was unacceptable for me. So I offered them my help and uploaded it (with a little bit of a forced consent) to github, to end this misery. Of course I helped them the basics of git. Now they automatically use git(hub) as vcs and to share their code.
I feel proud for this :)10 -
Being a student this was how my colleagues felt about my code and SQL procedures. They didn’t even let me create a change ticket to present to CAB 😂11

Sorry John Doe, you're application for this job has been rejected. As we specified for this job you need to know about GitHub. In your CV you stated that you are an expert in git but our job requires the knowledge of hub as well. Good luck next time10

A colleague from university cried the last week that he cannot use git. For him it was just a big pile of software BS. I didn't bother to ask, as he is a very whiney person and complains about everything.
I asked him today...
He tried to create a git repostitory on his usbdrive. How else could he work on different machines???🤔😝
I tried to introduced him to Github/Bitbucket/...
He knew about them but was afraid they would sell/use his bugriddeld programming excercises😂4 -

First I wanna say how grateful I am that devRant exists, because my friends either don’t understand this vocab or don’t care lol.
Last week I worked on a pretty large ticket, opened a PR with 54 file changes. Just to follow standards I set the PR milestone to a future release version, but the truth is I didn’t care which version this work ended up in— I just needed it to go into the develop branch asap.
Since it was a large PR there was some expected discussion that prolonged its merging, but in the meantime I started a second branch that depended on some of the work from this branch. I set the new branch’s upstream to develop, fully expecting my PR to merge into develop, since that’s what I set the PR base to.
I completed all the work I could in the new branch, and got two colleagues to approve the initial PR so it would be merged into develop, I could add the finishing touch and get this work done seamlessly before the week was over. They approved, it got merged, I pulled develop, and… my work wasn’t there. I went to look at my PR and someone had changed the base branch to a release branch. It was my boss, who thought he was helping. (Our bosses don’t actually work on the same team as us, so he didn’t know. it’s weird. We have leads that keep track of our work instead.)
I messaged him and told him I really needed this in develop, knowing our release branch won’t be in develop for probably another week. I was very annoyed but didn’t wanna make him feel too bad so I said I’d just merge the release branch into my new branch. So many conflicts I couldn’t see straight. His response was “yeah and you’ll probably have a bunch of package manager conflicts too because that’s in that release.” He was right— I have so many package manager conflicts that I can’t even see how many compiler conflicts there are. I considered cherry picking my changes, but the whole reason I set develop as my upstream was to avoid having any conflicts since I’m working in the same functions, and this would create more.
So I could spend the next (?) days making educated guesses on possibly a thousand conflict resolutions, or I can revert my release branch merge and quietly step back and wait for the release branch to be merged into develop.
I’m sure cherry picking is the best option here but I’m genuinely too annoyed lol, and fortunately my team does not care to notice if I step back and work on something else to kill time until it’s fixed automatically. But I’m still in dire need of a rant because my entire plan was ruined by a well-meaning person who messed with my PR without asking, so here is that rant and I thank you for your time.8 -
I was made owner of the GitHub repo in my team.

I'm going to teach web dev at a coding school in a few months. In the teaching plan, students have to learn git. But we are told explicitly to only teach using github desktop and not the command line because it puts students off.
I'm not sure how to feel about this12 -
TL;DR : do we need a read-only git proxy
Guys, I just thought about something and this potential gitpocalypse.
There is no doubt anymore that regardless of Microsoft's decisions about Github, some projects will or already have migrated to the competition.
I'm thinking : some projects use the git link to fetch the code. If a dependency gets migrated, it won't be updated anymore, or worse, if the previous repo gets deleted, it can break the project.
Hence my idea : create some repository facade to any public git repository (regardless of their actual location).
Instead of using github.com/any/thing.git, we could use opensourcegit.com/any/thing.git. (fake url for the sake of the example).
It would redirect to the right repository (for public read only), and the owner could change the location of the actual repository in case of a migration.
What do you think ? If I get enough ++'s, I'll create a git repo about this.6 -
Found a very interesting use case of git and github, it seems that even government such as the Washington DC City council uses Git & Github to publish laws! Citizens have even given PRs to fix certain typos through git :p.

Teaching a beginner (though in 40's) Git and GitHub is somehow annoying!
Cause they won't follow the instructions 😂😒9 -
One fine day, at work, I was doing one of my favourite things.
git push origin test:mainline

Oops.
Day 3 - and no one has noticed yet...6 -

So I am conducting an introductory seminar on git and GitHub for juniors and as per my knowledge I've drafted this outline, please add your inputs..
The seminar will be of 1 day only
1. Install and configure Git and Github
2. Digital Signature mapping
3. Git init
4. New Project with HTML
5. Configure remote (git remote add <origin> <url>) ends with .git
6. Git commit (git commit –m “Title” –m “commit message”)
7. Pushing git push (git remote push origin master)
8. Git commit –amend
9. Git pull (git pull origin master)
10. Git checkout (git checkout –b new_branch_name)
11. Do some changes
12. Git push new branch (git remote push origin new_branch_name)
13. Git switch branch (git checkout <name_of_existing_branch>)
14. Pull requests
15. Git log (git log –oneline –graph)15 -

Why then, why exactly, is it so fucking hard to get ssh private keys for github, up and running on windows powershell.

Fuck it !! 😭😭9 -
Damn it! today I learnt that GitHub has a tool called Hub - "an extension to command-line git that helps you do everyday GitHub tasks without ever leaving the terminal".
It's been around for 10 years.
And here I was clicking on the link that was sent by the remote after every push to open a pull request 🤦♂️
It even comes with vim syntax support for pull requests.
I'm never leaving the terminal to do things on the GitHub web interface anymore1 -
First time people have forked and stared one of my github repositories.
Kinda exciting, but also scary. (they're looking at my terrible code)5 -
This whole Microsoft & GitHub thing is how it begins:
1) Embrace
oh it's really cool, Microsoft is adding some cool features we've been missing for a while, GitHub is still great
2) Extend
Alright, there's this new `msgit` that has some really cool features for rebasing and merge conflicts, I won't need to worry about fucking up my git history
3) Extinguish
`msgit` is not compatible with `git` and GitHub requires us to use it, but what can we do, all our code and build triggers are set up..
They are doing the same thing to JavaScript with TypeScript and stopped the development of the Internet for ~10 years...
I don't want to paint dark clouds, but I heard this theory at work and it makes sense that Ms would take it in a direction where people are locked in to their ecosystem. It won't happen immediately, but all signs point to this.

There was a workshop about git in our university and I was the teacher.
After teaching main concept of version control and git commands I was talking about open source community and github repository. First I should notice /pul/ in my language means money.
When I was talking about pulling changes from repository one of the student raised his hand and ask me "Why they would give us money?"
After seconds of silence I had feeling between laughing and crying1 -
Now that github is also offering unlimited private repos to free users, I'm thinking of using it as a backup of my gitlab private repos.
Like pushing to a gitlab private repo auto push to a github private repo kind of workflow.
I will search how to do it online.
However it would be awesome if anyone with similar previous experience can share their wisdom here 😁7 -

Today I had to teach a product manager how to use git. It took about 30 minutes to create a proper pull request. Then another 30 to update it when he fucked the change up.
It was a one line change...needless to say I was internally screaming after the first 10 minutes.2 -

Is it a good idea to use Github or have a private local Git Server? I’ve heard Github now let’s people make private repositories for free so I was thinking of that but idk. What do you guys use?23

What the hell is wrong with using GitHub, or Git??? A client told me he’s concerned because it’s been, in his words, “compromised” and the admins can “see our code for trouble shooting purposes” and he doesn’t feel comfortable with that…🤨 like…no one wants this code my dude, like the fuck!?! We’re already using a skeleton project from someone else’s git, yet you dnt want this project on there??? Ooooor, is it because you dnt know how to use it??? Nor do you want to take the time to learn it??? 🤨 fuck boy. 😡😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬14

If Microsoft acquires GitHub, it will be far from the end of git. Even if it is an EEE play, there are still many FOSS variants that will enable the use of git without having to deal with Microsoft's toxic business model.
I still have my gitlab install, and I will continue to use it.4 -
1. Get an idea
2. Plan the structure to use overengineered solutions
3. $ git init

7. Back to 1, repeat -
Lets discuss Git Clients. Now I love electron, in concept. And I love what you can do with it, on paper. And I understand Github's need to jack itself off by developing its own framework just to make its own software in being what Github is, and then everyone else following suite because Github must know best. And that's my rant, I don't think it had a point. So, favorite git client and why?21

For different reasons, this outbreak of coronavirus lead me to learn how to use git efficiently (never had to before, as I work mostly alone). In two days I learned to fork, branch, pull, push, ... I feel like I really accomplished something for myself.
Oh and I also started to collaborate to a shiny app in R. Any way is good to keep my mind off the fact of being in lockdown in a foreign country.
Stay positive people! :) -

When "Programmers" don't understand how something as simple as git works.
>Do they keep whole repository in a zip file for each commit? Having made 100 commits is there 100 zips with all the files? or is each commit additive to the first commit. so that 1 zip with all the files you just get files added or removed based on what commit you are downloading?
Stuff like this makes me cry.....
-commit 1GB file
-commit another 1GB file
Repo is now 3GB? Seems legit right?8 -

I'm starting to worry about where am I.6 -
> Tries to be slightly festive by making a ball drop website on my phone using an app called play.js (its an app that lets you play around with nodejs, react native and react)
> Make some progress
> Gets tired of phone keyboard once back at the house so tries to upload to GitHub
> app makes a repo by default so when I made a new GitHub repo it had a different .git history, so i cant push to it
> copy files manually
> JavaScript happened
> Deletes code off pc and deletes GitHub repo. -
GitHub appears to be operating in some sort of time paradox at the moment as none of my recent commits are showing up.7

I'm notoriously bad at Git. By that I mean I REALLY REALLY SUCK AT IT. And I have the curse of short memory and an even shorter ability to retain the how-to, muscle memory knowledge of things if too much time passes.
So, I was staring down the gullet of merging two separate repositories onto my local machine and then pushing the result to a remote server. Not having the benefit of someone else to bounce this off of, and always finding the usual Git docs too dense and obtuse, I turned to ChatGPT to help me sort it out.
Guys, where has this been all of my life? I know it's not perfect and it can make mistakes. I knew that going into it, so I made preparations in case this failed. BUT. IT. WORKED! I feel like it has put me into the Star Trek:TNG universe where I can say "Computer, do the thing." and it does that thing. Here's the prompt I used and which it answered perfectly.
"Play the role of a git coach. I have two git repositories. One is on Bitbucket. The other is on GitHub. The branch named "master" on Bitbucket has the latest code. The branch named "master" on GitHub needs to be updated to what's on the Bitbucket "master" branch. Please write the series of git commands that I will need to accomplish this."9 -
So I'm sitting there in Android practice. I already have some experience with Android, so the exercises they make us do are quite easy for me. Nevertheless I start doing the exercises, when the teacher tells us that whoever implemented last week's exercise well gets a + point (and a pat on the back).
Implementing it well only means that you used a Model class for your Model (basic stuff). I raise my hand, hoping to get that sweet ++.
Teacher comes over. My laptop dies. Can't boot for shit. All the while I'm losing my shit. Then I remember that I have the code up on Github (I started using git for these small projects, to practice it). I showed the teacher my code on Github and the app on my phone (I debug from my phone because there is no way I can run an emulator on my laptop). I got the ++ and the teacher was delighted that someone was using Git, even though they didn't *have to*.
I definitely learned my lesson there. I'll be using Github for all of the small shitty projects we have from now on. My Github repo might look like garbage, but I will have peace of mind.6 -
That sinking feeling when you realize you’ve been running all you got commands in the wrong repo. 😐 I can fix it but DAMN IT2
-
You know what fuck github , anyone remember when git cli was easy and straight forward to use
Now i have conflicting master branches because the remote is main and git automatically defaults to master.
Git still asks for a password while github can't wait to inform me how I have to go through the very long process of setting up an auth_token.
Apparently https remote origins for some reason don't work anymore, why because apparently i need to change them into ssh, good luck with the public key errors
This sucks , fuck github and fuck politics9 -
When the fire alarm at your company goes off and instead of saving your life or thinking about your family your first thought is
git commit
git push

When it's 10pm, you need to put your code on master. And GitHub is down. Oh wait, it's friday night.7

Today I found github student developer pack thing. It was the golden chance to sharpen my git skills at least I thought so.. 2 hours tried to figure out how does "merge" works in gitkraken and now I'm depressed..5

We have a univeristy internal gitlab. Ok.
My work place uses the official github. Great. No problem.
Now for another work related project, we got access to the gitlab of an institute which is at the same university....
Why the fuck do we have to use their gitlab now also? I've got 3 different git accounts now. It's just unecessary and annoying... -
So I made a new GitHub repo and pushed some changes to it, but they didn’t show up. Then I noticed that there are two branches to my project— main and master. And my changes were pushed to the master (coz I did git push origin master) and the default name is now configured to main. So this is what some of you guys were irritated about— changing words like master-slave to primary-secondary for political correctness and all.6

Q)whats the worst that could happen when i change my github name?
(PS1 : i already went through official docs , but couldn't understand that. https://help.github.com/articles/...)
Assume that I have a very average profile, with no repo having any forks but many many forked projects of others. I have also contributed to some other people's project .
1) i got my profile link on many websites and forms. will they redirect to my profile?
2) i think the git in my lapp has to be configured again for global configs. That won't be problem but I think i have to reclone old local reps again. right?
3) my contributions on other and my own projects : will they stilll show my new name?8 -
I've been programming a simple DB engine all day. As my commit describes, i cant tell how it went...

Learning git continues..
So I started learning git on an actual project and pushed all commits on master.. after the project had been completed I gave more time learning git and felt like an idiot...now I'm efficiently trying to learn git...4 -
First rant... I'm on a large project where en use Git. Apparently I am the only one who, after pulling the dev branch, do multiple local commits to track (and possibly) undo my local work before I merge into development again. Everyone else do ONE local commit. Am I gitting wrong?!4

In SublimeText, I noticed that my markdowns formatting was not showing up correctly— I decided to download the new markdown package altogether hoping for some kind of update/fix. Turns out the package comes with a super ugly color theme which overrides the default theme of SublimeText. After some googling and experimenting, I found way to override this through the package settings. I always use git through my terminal but I thought let’s try to use git through my code editor and see how it works. I downloaded the git package but then I notice that git tool shows status and all correctly but doesn’t push files to GitHub (it says fatal: unable to read current working directory). Then I download another application called SublimeMerge. It works correctly on its own (pushes files to GitHub) but SublimeText is still not doing the same. Then I tinker around with my SSH keys hoping for a fix, but nothing works. I even go to stackoverflow and search for a solution but I find nothing (I even wrote a post asking for a solution but no replies till now). Fuck it! I now open the file with VSCode. Open terminal within VSCode and add/push/commit through it and everything works perfectly. So goodbye SublimeText I guess 👋🏾11

Enjoying the hacktoberfest. Thank you guys for ranting about it. Or else I wouldn't have known about it. Done with the 4 PRs. Still looking forward to contribute more.

I currently use Github as my git server and have worked a little bit with Travis. Sadly Travis can't deploy to local network targets and that's why I had the idea to create my own basic CI for the local network: It will be a simple nodejs-app and listens to pushes via Github Webhooks. Then it fetches the code from Github and runs a task runner like Gulp over it and tests it with any nodejs testing framework. Then it deploys the compiled, tested and linted app to the local network. What do you think of this idea?8

Got branches:
+ More organised
+ Easier to work on lots of features
+ Easier to collaborate
- Commits don’t show in github contributions
Result: no branches1 -
GitHub is horrible. It takes the "de" away from the "decentralized" aspect of Git. Also, don't forget the part of the TOS that says Microsoft has all rights to your code regardless of license.19
-
Teaching version control would be nice. Git, SVN, CVS. My work uses CVS, and I still have no idea how to properly fork and merge. My knowledge of Git currently starts and ends with GitHub (sorry but true). I stumbled my way with TortoiseSVN just so I could get a WordPress plugin uploaded.1
-
Bro : What’s the difference between Git & Github?
Me : Its just like the difference between Porn & Porn Hub. 😎4 -
Collaborating on a project with another person, is like sex. If you don't pull on time, you've to support the code for the rest of your life! :P1
-
Learn git! Git and GitHub basically opened up my eyes to so many more possibilities and helped me manage my workload between two workspaces. It turned me into a person who sshed into a server someone lent him to code into someone who uses github for everything and who can manage between two or three workspaces efficiently

Git repositories? What is the best online for free
Android Studio + Kotlin
Hey guys
So, I'm thinking on starting programming again... slowly cause of Burn out
I'll be homesick now for a while and I want to start coding again.
I've been making Apps for Android in App Inventor, but now I want to make stuff that sincerely will be hard on a complete visual programming language.
So, I'll be starting to learn kotlin
My problem now is that I don't do any really programming for years, and most of my knowledge is from 1990's. I want to put my code in a git repository but GitHub doesn't have a free option and I can't spend money now, since I'll gain a lot less.
What are the best alternatives online, or tricks, like online VMs
thanks for the time11 -
Just removed an API key from one of my GitHub repos (yeah I know API keys don't belong there) and at the moment i pushed the corrected file, I got an email from GitGuardian that it discovered a key in my Repo although i deleted it. Anyone else experienced something similar?2

What a fucking day.
Half a day looking for functionality on github that was lost in some branch and not merged to master. All remotes was pruned. Finally restored it from some remote on production and merged to master before Saturday release. Yeah !!!!
Month saved fuckers, pick some more hardcore shit to surprise me. To strong to fail. -
I was ok with microsoft taking github
idk wich faults is but lately when i try to
$ git pull
it says that is "up to date" wich is cleary not
I checked the repository on their website.
SOOO here i am copying the RAW code from github so i can have the same version of what im working on rn
¯\_(ツ)_/¯8 -
Very noob question. I started using git/github for my classes in Python, but I dont see why is it any better than google drive or onedrive, since you can also send multiple archives and have it synced to your computer without having to "push". Why is it so popular and needed?10
-
Project Zero team found that a specially crafted URL could make the Git client into sending credential information of an alternative host to an attacker's host. In this case, the specially crafted URL needs to contain a newline character to trick the credential handling (performs url decoding on most possible url components, no additional validation) and sending the data off to an alternate host.
Updated Now : Credential protocol code is now forbidding newline characters in any values.

If I have existing code stored in a local folder/git repo. What is the easiest way to upload it into Gitlab?
I'm thinking of SourceTree for the upload.
GitHub is sorta my professional profile. I want one for the old, unused, and nsfw stuff.11 -
That might seem a bit random, but I started off this year with a nightmare (a literal dream) where I've fallen victim to remote code execution, because I cloned someone's git repo.
Is such a thing even possible? The closest thing I've found was this blog
https://blog.blazeinfosec.com/attac...
(and the info on it was already worrying enough), but that shouldn't have affected my dream computer.
Some details I more or less remember:
* The execution happened right after git clone
* The uri to the repo was a custom domain (no github, gitlab or anything)
* no submodules
* GNU/Linux3 -
That it's better to get started with git and GitHub with your own projects rather than swerling your head around someone elses code. Once you are comfortable you could try the latter.
-
Great fucking job github and git-lfs
Github,
First don't tell no one about your fucking limits and then when one goes to delete those files that clogged up the storage, fucking don't let them
Also, even for the unsuccessfull commit, let's charge their fucking bandwidth
And for git-lfs
You can't even fucking use the goddamn help command on git-lfs which they suggest you to use. (I installed git-lfs just as they said)2 -
What the absolute fuck were you thinking Microsoft?
You're doing everything you can to ensure that those who continue to use Github are flogged and castrated?
What the fuck happened to the SSH clone link that was so easy to keep in all you had to do was *checks notes* fucking NOTHING.
It makes me question choices I have made over the last two years. Like, why don't I just host my own git server at this point? I have a couple servers running and it would cost me next to nothing.
Before anyone says anything about GitLab , I looked. I would be spending three times what I am now if I used them.
At this point it seems like a futile attempt to stay with you. I'm going to start calling you ShitHub now because it's a place where I can't get shit done without some kind of new shitty "improvement".
2022 is lining up to be a spectacular year!
Fuck you Microsoft.8 -
Sometimes I genuinely wonder what the thought process of some people is...
git checks out feature-X branch
git creates new branch off of it to work on something that has absolutely nothing to do with feature X
then opens a PR back into feature-X
Me: this has nothing to do with feature X.. i think you meant to branch off of develop and PR back into develop, no?
Them: no it was intentional .. feature-X will eventually end up on develop so I thought we'd get both features on develop.
I'm not even mad and this isn't a rant, I'm just really confused 🙂4 -
Holy shit.
This was an effort to combine Gitlab, Github and Bitbucket with VSCode and git SSH authentication. SSH agent doesn't work, configured, added some code in .bashrc, seems fine. Then there was still ssh-askpass missing.
"ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/bin/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory"
WTF VSCode? Why do I need this crap?
However, installed it. Nevertheless, I'm still asked for my password every time when I synchronize using the GUI. Thank God everything was in docker containers/images. So at least there is no garbage left after every failed attempt.
I don't know how, but I finally made it that at least synchronization using the terminal works without a password.
Took me five hours to do this shit.
Now I just report the bug to Microsoft and then straight to McDonalds. I'm starving.1 -
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and GitHub have announced that all ASF projects using Git have moved to GitHub and the ASF Git service has been decommissioned.

Random but does anyone have experienced with hosting your own git server together with a frontend?
I don't want to solely rely on GitHub.
I've tried gitlab before but was put off by the ridiculous amounts of resources it needed.
Been thinking about gogs for a while7 -
For some reason
I hate GitHub
This is something I wanted to get off my chest because all of my friends are in love with it and I love how it's got proper documentation and stuff but idk
I feel tooo
Lazy(?)
to push stuff on the git
GONNA KEEP MY CODE WITH ME IF ANYONE WANTS IT, use email
Or get a pendrive15 -
Change is truly a difficult thing. I've been trying to introduce my group colleagues to GitHub, I even gave them some tutorials that I used. I'm not saying I know everything about Git or GitHub but the pros of using it or any VCS outweigh using Google drive, zipping and email each other the code and many other creative ways of sharing work. Let's just say two months have passed there haven’t been any change ☹2
-
We're you all equiality confused when you started to learn about git and GitHub or am I just really stupid?9
-
What is your go to platform to publicly share your git repos? Obviously GitHub is the most popular, but I wonder if there are other platforms that are widely used in the same fashion.
What prevents you from using GitLab or anything else? Is it just Github's popularity or are there features that only GitHub has that keep you to it?14 -
Ok so I'm new to git and am wondering whether or not to move my repo's from github to gitlab, are there any major benefits to moving it?4
-
Git was designed to be used in a decentralized fashion, and as such has a lot of additional logic steps to deal with this.
The way people use git today only with centralized storage such as github makes it a inferior solution compared to SVN6 -
I don't like these business of bots that mark issues stale and close them. Is an issue no longer an issue cause it hasn't been seen too properly?3
-
I just committed to git using a cloud terminal but in github, it added my 2nd github account as committer even tho i put credentials for 1st github account.
1st github account was logged in in incognito mode and 2nd github was logged in normal chrome

Somebody once said to me: "I see no difference between a Git repository and a GitHub repository."
Well, mister, did you know that GitHub uses several repositories for every project? GitHub's interface is certainly not redundant or unneeded.2 -
User forked UnrealEngine on GitHub and gave write permission and subscribed everyone (~100K)
Thats not how you git it.

Workflow? WTF! 😅
When your team lead posts all the pending / new Features that needs to be integrated into the app in GitHub repo - > Issues.
And then asks me what's the status of Bugs.
Like what the FUCK am I supposed to say. You. SIR, motherfuck, just added list of all new features in git issues and you want status on Bugs.4 -
The owner of a github repo has added me as a contributor but haven't given me write access, so i can't push commits.
When i asked him, he said i have to make PR. The fork button is also disabled. So i guess i can't make a PR also.
Now WTF i am suppossed to do now?
No write access, fork disabled . Still i have to push my commits ....ughhhh2 -
Amazing.
Just got to know that we can create private repo's on github.
At the cost of sacrificing pages.github.com8 -
Following the Github/Microsoft news,, I've started cloning repos to both Github and Gitlab, as well as a self-hosted read-only git server. Finally, the push I've needed to be multi-service.

What is the reason behind Git Access Tokens being viewable only once after generation on platforms like GitHub? I'm struggling to comprehend this approach as it compels me to store the key in an insecure manner.3

Today i'm very happy becose i'v just see the devrant.com web ui is full finished !
And i'v see too the new plan of GitHub.. Soo i'v import 65 private project from BitBucket to GitHub haha2 -
When you go to sleep after a git push and wakes up next day to find out it asking for your credentials!
-
I had mistakenly added a large file to a commit, and I'm now spending 3 hours of my life just to remove it and being able to push.
I've deleted the file from tracking, but it remained in history so when I try to push, github rejects to continue.
And, still worse, trying various solutions on StackOverflow I've done a mess on the history which now looks unrelated to the remote one, and I think it's a never-end catastrophe.
It's absurd how badly designed is git, and how hard it is to use besides the 3 commands that you learnt by heart16 -
Does anyone knows what the hell is "coala" that's used for liting and fixing code? Cause I am pushing something and they said I need to fix my code using "coala" but I can't seem to figure it out what it is, how to install... I even tried to install in atom as plugin but that shit gives errors.7

Finally got my boss to allow us to use git so we have a source control for not just our applications but our websites. He told me he still won't use it. Should I make a copy of the sites then take it down and see how long it takes them to recover?
Also, the only backup of the websites is in the root directory of each website1 -
Question for devs:
How are y’all handling copy changes in your app? What’s ur process? Do you put up a PR for every small copy change or do you use a special tool or something?4 -
Is there a Git client for Android that WORKS (without rooting)?
I've seen quite a few but would love your recommendations. Looking to just pull, push, commit.
Would probably connect to Github, maybe Bitbucket or Gitlab3 -
Coming home fully energized to work on a collaborative project, turn on linux pc (quite old, but works best with git), open github, start git pull, open vs code, click on reminder to download new version -> open new chromium tab (takes longer than normal...?), open start menu

? ... pc frozen😔😥
forcing shutdown, restart ... wifi gone😓? oh come on!!😑😣4 -
I was planning to put multiple projects in a single repository. Realised that was a bad idea after a little reading. I wish there was a way to categorise repositories on GitHub.1
-
I've spent two days of holiday to setup CircleCI. And I can't **believe** how hard they make such an essential service. I've uploaded 16 commits to Github just to fix the configuration. And what's the best part? It still doesn't work! The configuration reference is useless.
*looks at CircleCI*
Oh what's that? They're having a system slowdown? well, GOOD FOR ME... /s -
Did git go back to using “master” instead of the new “main” as its default branch name? Because when you create a new repo on GitHub now, they explicitly ask you to rename the branch to “main”. I checked by doing ‘git status’ on a newly initialized repository and it still shows “on branch master”.3

yesterday i got a very interesting thing to learn
git!=github.....lol
after passing at eternity i got to know about the biggest truth...

a few moments later...

Fuck you Git bash
I did fucking add the ssh key to my ssh agent
I did add it to my GitHub account
you are dumb because for months until today you worked fine, now you look for ssh keys in a bullshit folder3 -
Git Semantic commits. Any thoughts? I just came across this today. Any tools you could suggest? I came across a command line tool for feat, chore, test, bug, fix etc. by russiann on github should I run with that or something else?

I'm almost ashamed to ask this but...
I need help with git, not GitHub but just plain git.
So I have Linux on windows because I realised all i need is bash, not all of Linux. So I'm taking a tutorial on git because... I'm a programmer, I need to know this. So I am also doing some demo stuff on my own and... I have no clue where to put the file I want to handle with git. In pretty sure I should put it in the file containing the .git folder, which includes .bash_history, etc. But when I git init and git status, it doesn't see it, so am i doing something wrong?
To be specific the test file is in
C:///Users/...6
