"Oh you're a developer?"
"Yes."
"Hey I've got this awesome app idea. You build it all and you can get 10% of the profits?"20 -
When I worked for an online dating app, at one point we had the ridiculous idea to try to take a popular LinkedIn feature and convert it to a dating app feature in order to capitalize off of the success LinkedIn had with it.
The feature was LinkedIn endorsements. The idea was to allow the dating app users to get endorsements from people in their contacts lists on certain traits/features from a defined list (ex. Funny, smart, etc.). It wasn’t a terrible idea on the surface, but the way we planned to execute on it was insane and everyone knew it was going to fail. To avoid any controversy all of the endorsable terms were watered down to the point where no one would ever find using them/asking their friends for endorsements to be any fun. And the worst part was how we planned to get people to ask their friends for endorsements - management wanted us to build a contact list importer and just spam email contacts with “please endorse me” emails. The whole thing was ridiculous.
No one, including myself, wanted to build the feature/spam tool but management really wanted it so we had to build it. Like expected, it failed very quickly when it was clear no one cared about getting their real life friends to endorse them on some dating app, and the spam contacts took was ineffective and... spammy.10 -
"I have no idea what this line of CSS is doing."
*Deletes line*
*Entire app falls apart*
"Better put that back..."

Android Development be like:
- Has great idea for app or feature
- Boots up PC
- Starts android studio and creates new project
- Build error
- Gradle build failed
- Android studio crashes
- Java Error
- Shutsdown PC
- Goes and hangs himself
Pretty accurate if you ask me 😀😀😀😎18 -
It had been 13 days since I was last approached with a "great idea for an app".
Today, the counter resets to zero!7 -
"You can teach my son to code. He doesn't like typing so just use that mouse thing (track pad). He's got an idea for an app (Flappy Birds clone) that'll make millions. It needs to be done tomorrow for his school computer project."
- Boss5 -
Everyone that finds out you're an app dev: "So I have this multimillion $$$ idea!"
Me: "I'll do it for $100."
Everyone: "$100!? I'm giving you the chance to be part of the next best thing!"
Me: "Well I guess the 'next best thing' isn't even worth $100."
I literally don't even like telling people what I do 😒5 -
I’ve been on devRant for around a year or so but only just signed up. Hello everyone.
Today was my last day at work. It’s time for me to start my own business rather than constantly work for one. I have an idea for an app so we’ll see how that goes.
Wish me luck!20 -
Million dollar app/service idea.
Automatically reply to all LinkedIn inmail’s with “I don’t have any experience with that on my profile”.
Even without any NLP I estimate over a 90% success rate.12 -
When anyone tells you some app idea you have already heard a thousand times, do you throw a OutOfFucksToGiveException?5

The biggest face palm moment in my life..
A girl in my class came up with an app idea. She wanted to make an app using which we can transfer our battery charge using Bluetooth. We initially thought it was a joke, then she went out to defend herself saying "if we can transfer files why not charge? If you're in an emergency and your battery almost drains out, wouldn't you feel nice if your friend could quickly transfer you 30% charge?"
Liked it, then give me a ++ via Bluetooth...
😂😂😂20 -
"Can you help me make an app? I've got this perfect idea, but I can't tell you what it is until you've said yes."
SIGH. I wish these people knew that perfect ideas are worthless, there are plenty of them. Perfect executions of good ideas are what has value.6 -
So Nvidia doesn't let you use their GeForce Experience app anymore without logging in.
*Uninstalled*
Fuck that, I don't want to login so I can see an FPS counter in my ganes or record them to my local disk or something like that... Fuck you Nvidia and fuck whoever decided that would be a good idea.6 -
Dev: So tell me some specs about the app you want.
Client: something like facebook.
Dev: you know facebook has too many features for even having a price tag?
Client: what? Will I pay too? I have the idea.
....6 -
The weirdest shit happened today. My 14 year old sister comes to me and asks me that she has a million dollar app idea that I should make her so that she can put it on the app stores and earn.
THE PLAGUE HAS SPREADDD😱11 -
need a good idea for app or game? follow this quick guide.
1. prepare a notebook.
2. prepare a pen.
3. go to toilet.
4. start writing the ideas.
5. make millions.13 -
Last week
Customer: I want <totally useless app idea that already exists>, how long will it take to build it?
Me: I think such an app already exists, but according to your requirements I believe we could finish it around May 6th.
Customer: OK, but our app will be so much better.
-finishes meeting and signs contract-
Monday
Customer: will the app be done soon?
Me: as we discussed in the meeting last week, it won’t be done until May 6th.
Tuesday
Customer: will the app be done soon, when will it be in the app stores?
Me: As I explained yesterday, it won’t be finished before May 6th.
Wtf????8 -
1) get an idea for a cool app
2) evaluate feasibility and execution
3) ensure accessible data streams and APIs
4) get excited and realize the idea is doable
5) see someone has done that exact thing and it's already published on the Appstore :/10 -
So devRant is an app I found while coming up with an idea to create a platform for developers to rant.....DAMN IT!!!6
-
Sometimes while using a app or a website I think:
"Who was the idiot who did this and thought it was a good idea?"
But then I remember about the countless "features" my projects have and realise I probably would have done the same or worst -
FUCK.
That feeling when you get inspired with an idea for a web app, do a quick search and find out there are already 2-3 sites that offer exactly what you envisioned...
My motivation just sinks so low after cases like this!
PISS.15 -
Yet another someone just contacted me about having a "great idea for an app".
That's a justified rant all by itself.7 -
Wife: "How hard is to make a phone app?"
Me: "Depends on what it is, why?"
Wife: "I had an idea for a cool app that does blah blah blah"
Me: "That actually sounds like a cool app. Let's brainstorm tonight and come up with a plan and see if we need to hire some freelance devs for it"
Wife: "Cool, I also want to make an app to blahblah2, oh and one to blahblah3.. oh hmm what about.."
<facepalm>4 -
Any time someone gets an idea that they talk to me about 'I want to build an app can you build apps'
Me : I'm not amazing at it but I can certainly try what's the idea?
Them: it's like Facebook but...
Me: that's plenty2 -
Hey man can you fix my tv, computer, toaster, phone, or hack this phone i found, can you hack me a wifi, can you make me a website/app i have a really good idea. (For free of course)
Hey man you only need a good idea for an app then become rich.
(Insert countless of other retarded requests here)
Someone kill me6 -
EVERY FUCKING DAY ANOTHER RETARD ON MY DOORKNOB WHO HAS TO TELL ME ABOUT HIS GREAT IDEA.
I GIVE A SHIT ABOUT VOICE ENABLED MUSIC PLAYER APPS. SO THAT YOU CAN CHANGE SONGS WHILE TAKING A SHOWER
NO ONE WANTS A GPS TRACKER APP FOR THEIR FUCKING DOG AND HOW DO YOU EVEN REMOTLY THINK THAT YOUR FUCKING DOG HAS BUILD IN GPS ANYWAY
AND NO WE WILL NOT MAKE BILLIONS AND TAKE YOUR 10% SHARE UP YOUR ANUS. YOUR IDEA IS AS WORTHLESS AS YOUR EDUCATION WAS OBVIOUSLY.13 -
So I went out to a country bar with some friends to dance... and my friend told some random dude I was a developer for some reason and he approached me with his grand idea for an app...😂4
-
Why everyone has an idea for an app like UBER? I have received a lot of these requirements this year, and then...4
-
Working like somebody out there has the same app idea as you and is working twice as hard as you are right now.7
-
Idea guy: Hey bro, I have an idea of an app that can teleport matter to any random place outside our milky way galaxy and brings them back at will
Me: okay??
Idea guy: This is d future of tourism in d world
Me: okay??
Idea guy: so this is whats going to happen, you sign an NDA, you build d app, and then i will give you an equity of 10% in it and run the business. This can be big. I will make you rich
Me: Geet the fuuuucckkkm oouttt or rather i build d app without a return button and send him to a black hole
**Just tired of this kind of conversations**1 -
Once a friend came to me asking for help building an app, I asked him what his idea was and he said, "It's an app that builds apps! Think about it, people could just tell it what kind of app they want and it could build anything for them automatically! Can you believe no one has done this?"7
-
"Hello App developer.
We're looking for android app developer who can develop simple app for individual political campaign vote for me.
The idea is developing simple Political part app with interactive Geolocation to see who is member and where they’re located. Members should sign with social media (facebook, google plus, twitter and instagram)"
What could possibly go wrong with that?!25 -
I met my girlfriend via online dating and she is often checking out recipes on social media, so I came up with the idea to combine cooking and Tinder as a tiny side project.
I built an app that lets you swipe recipes to add them to your cookbook and called it "Daily Cook" and it is available on both Android and iOS. :)13 -
Every single time a friend comes to you with a "million dollar app idea" because he knows you're in webdev6

That moment when you see an app idea that had struck you last summer, successfully implemented by someone else in autumn. 😢3

Cute Girl: So you're like a computer guy, right?
Me in 2012: Yeah, I do some programming and...
Cute Girl: Ok *walks away*
Me in 2012: ........wait, come back! Don't go! I'll fix your printer for you! Or hack your friend's fb. Or make this cool app that you maybe have an idea for..? Don't leeeeeav...ah nvm, she's gone.5 -
A few years ago I had a startup. I invited 2 friends to join and we split the ownership equally. I did most the work but didn't mind. I had fun. Anyway, the story is not about me. I was in a startup incubator.
There was this stereotypical rich kid in the incubator too.
For the first few months he refused to even share what his idea was.
Finally he was forced to do it. It was an app for storing gift cards. Literally, there were startups for some high tech phd genious types. But the guy with the idea of a gift card app didn't want to share in fear that we would steal his mediocre idea.
His idea was to digitalize physical gift cards without the consent of the companies and make a market for selling, buying and trading (and taking a fee). When asked what if the companies refuse to accept the unofficial digital gift card, he said he had talked to a lawyer that they should accept it or he would sue them. Wow.
There was a guy who had attempted at doing an app like that 2 years before too apparently.
So here comes the part about the work culture.
He convinced 3 or 4 computer science students to develop the app for him. He offered them 1%, no pay. Talking about how rich they would get and how big it would be.
Luckily, one of the developers came to his senses after a few weeks and convinced the others that they were worth much more.
The guy was furious and even threatened to sue them.
He even got like 2-3k USD from some of his parents rich friends to develop the app. He could afford to pay them.
Anyway, the app was never completed.
I have many stories like that from other startups. A lot of students getting ripped off to work for free. I know people who have startups going for years thanks to free labor.1 -
While I am in cafeteria and drinking coffee I got a great app idea, hurry quickly home and going to sleep.6

"I have this great idea for an app, it'll be like Facebook but better"
How I imagine the conversation went before devrant was made3 -
Our CEO/Boss thought up a new idea for an App
Boss: I got a new idea, i dont know what it is, but its very easy. How long you can do it?
Us: •.•3 -
This days whenever I have a groundbreaking idea, my firs step is...
Google that exact title, because every possible app ideas are already done ✅1 -
Boss just phoned me and told me of his great app idea. Says he wants the idea done and implemented by tomorrow 8AM. Meaning I have 8 hours to plan a project, design the app, and implement it.
Well, I'm boned.11 -
App idea!
A normal social media app. But everytime a user taps on opposite gender's profile pic, it secretly records his face during that activity and then tweets that recording.

When you have a killer app idea for years and you a lazy @sshole for working on it, but always dreaming with it.
"If I make the app I will be a millionaire"1 -
1. have an exciting app idea
2. create project folder
3. include WebPack
…
47. lose all passion for project and give up

STARTUP IDEA GUYS SUCKS!!!!
So today one of my friend asked me to do an app for him and finally share 50 percent of the profit that I get. His idea is to build an app that can measure air pollution level, water pollution level, soil fertility range. I was like "what the hell!"... The beauty is that he wants me to pay him 50 percent for giving such (stupid, retarded) idea.
Wondering when these "startup idea guys" will realize that ideas are cheap but execution is worth the millions! Fed-up with such stupid people.14 -
You wake up in the middle of the night with an awesome idea for a new app.
You spend weeks thinking about it, open a private repo, start to design the UI and logo, and in all your excitement explain your idea to the family and best friends, but no one really finds it cool.
Slowly you start to lose the excitement, day after day you consider it more and more stupid, until you start to hate both the idea and yourself because you really liked it.
6 months later, when you totally forgot about it, you find an app on the App Store very similar to it (but with less features)... as App of the Day, sold for €6.99, 4.8 rating, thousands of positive comments and loved by everyone.
The moral of this story?
If you really like your idea, just make it happen without looking at anyone.4 -
Me: "I've just released a new app"
Everyone I know: "I've got a great idea for an app.... I'll give you 10%"
Every. Single. Time. -
dad: why not a lawyer or doctor.
mom: is the pay good?
grandmother: so you're an engineer?
cousins: don't forget me when you become rich.
friends of family: I have an idea for an app :)1 -
Software engineering project discussion:
Boy: Sir, my project is a client to manage files stored on different cloud file storage systems at one place
Faculty: Boring idea. Very easy to implement, No scope of scalability, etc
Girl: My project is an app to display the weather information
Faculty: Omg! What an innovative idea! I'm surprised how no one though of this before!11 -
That frustrating moment when you have an excellent app idea but a similar app already exists with over 50,000 downloads 😭😭😭4
-
Hello guys... i came across this app on play store as a recommendation... and i am really impressed with it.. such a cool idea and an awesome place to rant... so i signed up and here goes my first rant... nice to meet you guys..15
-
A client of mine who has a competitor that launched android app this January. Now my client wants me to clone the app to her companies branding. I told her that's it's the best idea to make something unique and gives different experience to the user. She started arguing with me for shitty reason.
So I agreed to work on the app.
PS: She is beautiful, I will bang her for sure someday. She is the one who will take my virginity.11 -
Me in my head: I've got this great idea for an app. You can probably build it in a hour. This is going to be awesome!
Ten minutes later: Screw this, can't be bothered anymore. What's on tv.?1 -
If you had a dollar for every time someone has told me "I have an app idea" , you would have enough money to hire me to build your app.3
-
A mate from highschool contacted me the other day, offering me a job on this grand new idea he had.
So I said: "Allright, lets hear it, whats the idea?"
Him: "Trust me, its the next billion dollar app! It is a whole new social network for..."2 -
Wanted to build a quick app, thought would be an hour tops. Lets use react native, why the fuck not.
Now after 4 hours im sitting here, wondering why the fuck did i have the great idea of ever touching rn again.12 -
Adventures Of The New COO
So when that new COO joined our company ( read my previous rant to know that story ) he brought a graphic designer with him
as a designer he's ok, more of a old school package designer type, but as a person one of the most annoying one I've ever met, always want to be included with our conversations, talk about rain and stuff
so few days ago, i was working on a website, headphones plugged in, music playing, he comes near my seat
Designer: Are you busy ?
Me: yeah, I've this website to finish
Designer: So i have this idea for an app
Me: *taking off headphones while thinking doesn't this dumbass know the meaning of busy*
Designer: what if we create an app for super markets, like this isle has this stuff, that isle has soap or something and how it'll be easy to find what you want to buy and keeps going on and on for about 5 minutes
Me: *making my voice as polite and sarcastic as possible*
It wouldn't work, every market has a different layout even among same market chain it's different
Me: have you ever been to a super market, they have a board saying what the isle is above the isle, all you have to do is just look up
Designer: hmm yeah i guess
*walks away*
everyone wants to make apps and make money, but doesn't have the fucking brain capacity to think about the idea for a bit and do some research, instead they come and waste our time2 -
“No it’s better this way, it’s an enterprise grade architecture design” - someone who was no idea how to build an app2
-
“Your idea is not valuable, at all. All value is in the execution. You think you are an exception; you are not. You should not insist on an NDA to talk about it; nobody serious will engage in contract review over an idea, and this will mark you as clueless.” Patrick McKenzie6
-
"You're a programmer?!"
"So, I have this app idea and I think it will be revolutionary!! I HAVE GREAT ideas for what it will look like - light blue here and white everywhere else. it's like facebook but different ..."
"It's really going to express my creativity as a person. I've poured my heart and soul into this idea. ITS GREAT RIGHT?!?!"6 -
Tried a mobile app club this semester and the second meeting they brought in these two business majors who said they had an idea for an app that would share videos of college parties and the videos would disappear after 24 hours. You could also invite people to the parties as well.
I was like so you basically want snapchat... what happens when cops create accounts and fine people for under age drinking? How will you get market share over snapchat or vine? How much money are you offering?
They were not pleased...3 -
!rant
Love this community, the idea of the app, developers, etc. Thanks everyone for making a home for devs.1 -
Glassdoor is the perfect example of how annoying, even just opening a website can be, first it asks for your permission to use your location, then half the screen is filled with a cookie agreement and after you clicked it all away, you get a "download our app" filling just 30% of your screen, now that you clicked that all away, you may use the website, ludicrous.
edit: well fuck, just noticed the app message glitched away when taking the screenshot, you get the idea though6 -
So... I made my second flutter app based on an idea suggestion from @Nomad.
Idea: https://devrant.com/rants/3708896/...

Time of delivery: 5 days approx.18 -
"So I have this awesome app idea..."
Proceeds to tell me, "I'll be, like, the face of the company, and you can just focus on the tech stuff, in the background."
Chad called me ugly nerd, so I took his idea, got an investment from his own father, built the company, and sold it.
See Chad got a new job as a sales development rep
At the company I built and sold
Haha epic2 -
Every time I see a software development company ad on fb I have to resist the urge comment "I have a great app idea, can you make me something like fb but better?"1
-
Fairly new here. Saw the ad for this on instagram and thought it was the coolest idea ever. Thanks guys for making this app :) now I can rant about how awful my PM is.2
-
Do you know whats worse than someone reach you for an idea " Lets create X existing app, but..." ?
Its "Lets clone that app, we will sell the service cheaper than the cloned app, you do all the job, se urity, hosting, administrating, and we will split the revenue 50/50."
Just happened.1 -
Dad just came to me: "I have a great idea for an app you could build"
I thought "Wow.. That's cliché"5 -
A friend sent me this message today: Hey, I have a great idea! An app that remembers your address so that when you are buying something online you don't have to type in your address.
Me: - (giggling)
Me: That's a great idea! I use it everyday. It's called Google Chrome!5 -
Yesterday I was hanging with the guys from our Records dpt in the staff lounge. Their manager is a pretty nice talkative guy. Everything was going well until this happened..
Him: Hey you, I have an idea for an app. You can"definitely" help me, right? Or someone you know who also does the code thing..
Me: It depends. Just before you tell me about this idea, know that you'll be paying me or whoever will be doing this job unt..i..l *he interrupts
Him: Paying? I thought it was a one time or few hundreds of dollars. Why do I have to keep paying when you haven't finished the app?
Me: Did you finish your entire work this week?...but you're still getting paid next week, right?
Him: Oh crap, makes sense. Ok, how about I pay you the amount you charge then, that's it?
Me: See, you don't get it. I know once the app is done, you'll come back to me to fix and update things. When that time comes, you'll have to pay me again. And with the initial payment, don't just think you pay me and that's all... you'll...
Him: Crap, I have think more and come up with a plan for this.. nevermind, I'll keep you updated.
I think I made him sad knowing that, this sort of things doesn't happen easily.2 -
I used to work IT in an entertainment startup, and now I’m an iOS dev at a big entertainment company. Several people from my old company have been reaching out to eagerly tell me about their new app idea I just have to hear, asking me to help code their app— and have even hinted at me quitting my nice safe job to join their great new startup that doesn’t even exist yet.
I know this must happen to app devs all the time. What do you say?
How do you deal with telling these nice people who just don’t understand it doesn’t work that way, without crushing their dream? I have a coffee meeting planned to tell one of them “You should learn to code so you can make a proof of concept,” but I fear that won’t be received well.
What’s the standard protocol for telling people you won’t be able to code their magic app idea?10 -
Just saw this in a production app. There's a reason no other language implemented VB's OnErrorResumeNext, BECAUSE IT'S A F***ING TERRIBLE IDEA.

Facebook: Ok, so we have this really cool idea for native Android and iOS app with React
Devs: Nice!
Facebook: Its gonna take away the need to work with native code!
Devs: Great!
*Reality comes in*
Reality: To make anything work you need to modify native code and use more hacks than there are useless npm packages18 -
So my Product Manager girlfriend just said, "I have a great idea for an app that people will really want. Can you build it for me?". She did not see the irony

Create the project of your billionaire app idea -> spend 1 week working on it -> realize that actually sucks -> repeat5

when your friends have a "great idea" for an app and expects you to code it all and they forget about it after you code it...3

that moment when you get an idea about awesome app to publish in the play store, but you remember how many other 100 ideas that are waiting for your move to write code, designing. so you give up, now you have 101 ideas waiting...1

A coworker of mine was asked to make a utility C# app to help with our internal testing. The idea was that the app would collect data and display the results.
He decided that it was very important that the app have a command line interface. He's spent far more time building the app from scratch for the command line than he would have if he'd used C#'s built-in GUI utilities.
Today was our demo day and he shows an internal command-line app in 2017 built in C#. I asked about the GUI and he said that the command line functionality was more important. I suggested that it was maybe less user-friendly and he proceeded to explain to me how "non-technical" people might prefer a GUI, but clearly any serious developer would just want a command line app.
I feel like, in one fell swoop, he trivialized my suggestion, didn't address any of the data visualization needs, and suggested I wasn't a "real developer". Am I right to feel a little outraged by this?5 -
Friend: i have an idea
Me: what is it?
Friend: uber is not yet here, lets do the app exactly like uber only for the city, can you do that like in one month?
Me: uber is a billion dollar company with several and the best engineers in the world
Friend: so what, just copy the exact same idea, of course the money comes when the app is done
Me: sure... ill call you in a month. (delete conversation) -
There are always guys coming with the same million dollar app idea every few weeks that want me to develop the app for share of the future revenues.
Btw the idea is always like this: "he man, i got an app idea which will make us rich quick. It's like Facebook and Instagram mix but with tinder functionality."7 -
It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
Why.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?5 -
Nothing interesting. Just 11 GB ram using and increases steadily. After restart app the bug was again. Okaaay, I thought. I reboot my PC, but bug was adamant. Well, then I update phpStorm and everything became fine. Ok, JetBrains, good idea to say user about new release version and make update:) Seriously, it works fine. I think every company should adopt this idea:)8
-
aaah, memories. When I discovered github while doing my school project. Even my lecturer had no idea about, he thought I made it as part of my project 😂 Project was an Ionic app connected to Arduino for home automation. straight As I got... straight As.

Spent last 2 days thinking of a good App Idea for a Hackathon. About 15 ideas later
Error 404: Shit to do not found!2 -
"I have a great idea for a messaging app.
But I can't tell you what it is until you agree to make it for me, I can't pay you right now but I'll pay you back when we make tonnes of money!"
My startup idea: you create apps for people with bad ideas and the fees on a 1 year 'loan' with high penalties for failing to pay. Fair right?3 -
The moment when you have this greatest idea in mind for an application after all that brainstorming!!!
Later you find out the idea already exists...3 -
!Rant
Hello devRant!!
Just released a small little app to share links to your PC directly from your device (Linker).
It uses a Java server running on your PC so there are no middle-men. Everything is open source and on my GitHub.
It's currently in alpha. Basically:
1. Run server on your PC (no UI ATM so run in a console) - defaults: 0.0.0.0:8090
2. Add the server IP-Port in the Android app
3. Share a link from any app through linker
4. Magic 😎
Below are the links if anyone likes the idea and wants to try it out (UI is crap I know! - I had very little time to work on it)

Sooo my gf dumped me last weekend :(
I remember somebody here had an idea for a dating app for devs. Is that actually a thing? Does anybody have a link?9 -
when you divide the products you sell into different categories, i dont think "human hair" is a good category.
this actually gives me an idea. i kinda wanna create a redesign plan for aliexpress app tbh cause i dont like its UI/UX.8 -
Sister: why haven't you come up with a brilliant idea and built an app like Facebook/Twitter/Snapchat/Instagram?

When you have the most awesome app idea ever before you fall asleep. But you fail to remember it the next day.6

So I just found out that another company is launching the same app/website idea as mine...*sigh*
This is not how I was planning on starting my week.
I suppose I need wait and see what they have and improve my app to be better.
Hello devRant, it's good to be back. I hope everyone has a good week.6 -
"Can I have an app? It's a million dollar idea: you take a picture of yourself and it tells you if you're pregnant or just fat. I don't have any money at the moment but I'm willing to give you 5%, maybe less if my friend wants to join. plus, no ads, and make it a free app so it will be liked alot."
Can you shut the fuck up? do you have any idea what the fuck you're talking about? that's the most fucking ridiculous idea I've ever heard. how the hell would it even work?5 -
My friend had an awesome idea for an app, but, he doesn't seem interested in doing anything 😑 I should I make the app or do nothing?10
-
Just got pitched an idea to make an app that scans food and tells you what it is. It's supposed to be like Shazam but for food… sounds familiar?9
-
am i loosing too much sleep over the idea that JavaScripters with their fat atom/electron are going to dominate the app stores of app/windows in the next few years ?3
-
Before Dev rant clueless about how to create a app that shows 360view of a car, and change the content when different Color is clicked
After basic idea from Dev rant
Finally able to figure it out and built it in 2 days. Honestly got lot of irritation at first, because have to learn everything from scratch and lots of errors.2 -
Just css'd the shit outta this Web app... by css I mean aggressively copied people on codepen til I patched together my idea of design
-
Started working on my old idea about contact app... Looking for some good name... And found an app having 30% common features I was thinking about. :(
Not sure if taking patent is a good idea on rest of the features.5 -
Colleagues at my part-time job:
"You study programming right? Amazing we've got this great app idea, we'd love to see a finished product in 2 months"
Me: "..."3 -
When you have a great idea for an app, then find out that someone already done it and with the same name.
My idea is way better than the existing one though... I just need to think of another name.1 -
A Google app that would let you tag good skating locations on Google maps. The idea itself wasn't stupid, there was just already a more generalized app that did a damn good job of it already. (That's how I figured out that most "like (blank) but for (blank)" project ideas are dumb)3
-
Started further developing an app (that I had left dormant) for retail outlets in my town. Spoken to the managers and they said they like my idea, and want to trial run it and then if it works properly, they want to start having the other branches around the country use it.
Now to sit by ass behind my screen, and finish developing my app (meaning tackling the many bugs that made me pull my hair out last time)2 -
When you start a project with random people and they have no idea how GitHub works, but still push new idiotic changes that make the app become slower and slowerevery hour it feels bad.
But when you ask them wtf are they doing and they answer 'Sorry, I don't understand you' it is an overkill. Wth?!1 -
!rant
I just realized... DevRant is what happens when someone says "I have this killer idea for an app, it's just like Facebook. We have to make it, but it's easy" ...and you respond with yes.5 -
Foolow up on: https://devrant.com/rants/1066787/...
I freaking did!
Already wrote half of the app in react.
I dont know how it happened, but i just got the idea and started coding suddenly!
And.... I love it!3 -
I have no experience with mobile app developement and i dont prefer coding in JAVA. But i want to make a mobile app based on an idea. Where do i start?21
-
To make all those "You know how to code right? So i have this app idea. Imagine Facebook BUT for ____" i get requested.2
-
Recently, Android development, because it feels good to think about an app idea in your mind, write the code, and seeing it working in your phone or tablet; very rewarding.3
-
How do you respond to the person who says this: "Hey #{insert_your_name}, I overheard that you are a programmer, I would like to tell suggest you a billion-dollar business app idea"?6
-
The internet at large is annoying me.
I just signed up for the payback card through Rewe. Cool idea. It's a German points card, and I have an American phone. Play store tells me the app isn't available in my country, and I don't see it on fdroid.
Anyone have suggestions for a reliable apk site to get this from?8 -
App idea: A tinder-esque service for developers, where devs woo their counterparts with intelligence.4
-
Everyone and their mom has an app idea they want you to code. Friend enthusiastically invites me on to work on a project, under the premise that he wants to learn development, seems legit. A few weeks later I'm building the entire app, and my friend still hasn't written a single line of code. Now he wants to pay me to finish building the app by myself and I am NOT feeling it AT ALL. UGH.... can anyone relate??1
-
So, a few friends of mine are starting a company. They'll be the CEO, CTO etc. The product is an app, with its corresponding back end in the cloud. They want me to build the app.
1. I'm not willing to take risk - spending time on that (not my idea at the first place & may or may not go well)
2. Not sure if I'll be benefitted. (Monetary / stake)
3. I have few projects at hand & have plans to learn something more/new (not narrow down only to apps).
What should I do guys?? Recommendations??11 -
When I talk about release a personal project to GNU/GPL license (when it's finished, some day) people looks at me like "wow, be careful". It makes me think about the mythology around silicon valley and how the idea of writing a killer app or a nice machine and instantly grow rich became a standard, even when it's terribly wrong and false...2
-
App idea: Program that processes funny dog/cat videos and removes the annoying ass thought bubble text they put in them. Like "I is hungreh" or "you is doin me a concern" or whatever. That shit. I hate it.6
-
My Girlfriend's birthday is coming up this month as we are in long distance kind of stuff so i was thinking to give a surprise to her.I was thinking to make a Birthday Countdown App.It will show the special message on her birthday and the second surprise will be a in-app chatbox were only we can chat.
Is this a good idea?8 -
Does the idea of people being able to see your source code when creating a hybrid app scare you guys?4
-
I always hate how I get a great idea for an app/game, and then I open up the play store and a very similar thing is on the first page.5
-
1. Idea comes to my mind
2. I have no clue how to even start coding it (Im not programmer)
3. See my app working
Best feeling ever!2 -
More and more of my friends and family are finding out I'm an Android Developer. I'm so sick of hearing, "Hey, I have a great idea for an app...". They all think you can build a good mobile app from scratch in a few days.2
-
Fun idea;
Who else thinks @dfox should release a version of devrant for Easter with Easter egg codes for free/discounted swag hidden all over the app?5 -
Pm: we need to add a feature to the app, how long will it take you?
Me: what is this "feature"?
Pm: we still polishing the idea, how long will it take you to add a feature to the app?
Me: bitch wtf? Get back to work!! -
Best review I have ever read in Mac App Store: „Idea and Icon are great, but it does not work as expected“1
-
I just finished this app I was working on, an app which I was supposed to be working on with a friend who never committed. It pisses me off that he didn't put in any input. We were supposed to work on different parts of the app. I had everything planned out, on how to make a certain function. But right now I'm just happy because I have no idea how I got it to work without the functions and at this stage I don't wanna check ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1
-
Why does this happen....
I go , hey I just finished this project (app for example since they the worst culprit)
Why ... Are the next words out of the other persons mouth is, oh I had an idea for an app ....
Why do they then proceed to tell you an app that exists , or an app that's ridiculous like
You know calenders ... Yeah I do... What about a calendar that syncs to your friends one when you want to do an event .... You mean Facebook events... Yeah but for calenders 🤔😥😒
Why does the general population think one.... It's easy to build and costs nothing and two that without research they have the best idea on earth. -
It's been quite a while since I've been hit with a product/app idea that's making me lose my sleep and making me want to quit my job and start working full time on it.
Let's see if I can pull this off.2 -
Client had this 'good' idea in his web app for a local 'image viewer'. One of his clients doesn't want anything in the cloud so he said: why don't we just make a browse button, that way they can view their files but don't have to upload anything!
-
Was recently in a motorcycle accident and haven't been cleared to go back to work yet so I'm trying to build my first Android app.
I don't know Java, XML, kotlin, Android studio, or what the fuck a Gradle is; but I figured I'd take my app idea and download Android studio then try winging everything from there.
Needless to say, I'm having a damn hard time lol. I have been watching firebase tutorials on YouTube to try and figure out how to add authentication to my app. I kinda got it working in the AVD. But my personal Google account has 2FA enabled so I can't seem to get the app to sign me out, or sign me back in. (I was able to authenticate once successfully.)
I have no idea if having 2FA enabled is even the problem. I tried turning on debugging and can't seem to figure out how to actually get the app to debug or get a debug console open.
I seriously feel like the world's biggest n00b right now. Going to go YouTube/Google how to get the debugging working. Then I'm off for a round of learning how to read a debug report!
Hahahaha... Kill me now -_-'2 -
Been trying to make React Native / SDK / Installing React components/ to work properly the whole day. After many hours I got it running on my phone to start working with a camera app idea i have.
Guess what.
When you take a photo with the phone oriented vertically, it takes an horizontal photo.
YES.HELL.5 -
I'm about to do my bachelor thesis in Interaction Design. I've got to design a banking/pocket money app for kids 8-14y for a swiss bank.
And I have no idea where to beginn with it. What is needed? What do kids like? And is a banking app for kids in demand at all? Parents? Where do I get kids to talk to without beeing a creep who stands with sweets in front of the kindergarden? 😧8 -
I had a project idea for creating my own cloud service based on DO spaces. Today I started.
Had the webapp done in several hours and it's already deployed. Next step: the mobile app. I tried out Flutter and I have to say, for beta it's really good! So I'll work with Flutter for the mobile app.
Excited dev here! -
I currently use Github as my git server and have worked a little bit with Travis. Sadly Travis can't deploy to local network targets and that's why I had the idea to create my own basic CI for the local network: It will be a simple nodejs-app and listens to pushes via Github Webhooks. Then it fetches the code from Github and runs a task runner like Gulp over it and tests it with any nodejs testing framework. Then it deploys the compiled, tested and linted app to the local network. What do you think of this idea?8

Hi guys... So I need a bit of advise.
I'm making my first app, it's an app for a university..
I pitched the idea to the uni director and he really liked it, and I have to do an actual presentation in about a week..
Basically I don't know how to price it... How do you guys price your apps?7 -
I plan in doing some minor Android app development for a side project when my exams are over (which is in two weeks, yay), but other than using Android on day-to-day basis I'm a total n00b when it comes to development.
I want to write a little app that can communicate with a BLE device. It should encrypt said communication.
I know some python and thought about using Kivy as a frontend since it's cross platform compatible (perhaps I'll make a Linux client, too). But I have no idea whether that's a good idea. Do I absolutely need Java? D:
So - where does one start? Tutorials/books welcome.7 -
Is there some basic guide to privacy for (android) phones?
Like where you flash some secure ROM, get timely updates , no gapps or privacy threatening app, use secure services and alternatives mainstream ones, and use foss s/w.. And something like fdroid instead of playstore store or something..
Ignore the badly framed idea, but you get my point..6 -
Had an idea for a Webb app tonight that I could use to test some new things out. Didn't get round to the new things but 3 hours later I do have my IDE set up, quarter of a billion npm modules and a gulp flow so complicated it feels like the file system is a rubicks cube...
-
when you pitch an idea for an app to your SO and he initially shoots it down, because "why would anyone want that" but a few days later, changes his mind in response to his friend's Facebook post1
-
Does this ever happen to you?
You try to add a feature in your app/product.
Somehow your brain can't comprehend the problem and you sit there toiling away.
A few days later you get that faint hope/idea. And with vigorous dedication you set out to implement and everything just fits in! -
I rarely donate money to charity, but I consider myself fairly charitable in other ways. For example, I rejected the 16th "billion dollar app idea" presented to me over the course of a few years, today. (Counting only ideas that come from semi rational people). I do believe I make the world a better place.
-
Idea - News app that connects to a blood pressure monitor and adjusts your feed accordingly. It'd be so awesome.2
-
I worked for a month in an ionic app without having any idea about frontend develop cuz my boss needed it quick and now that its done he doesnt even tested it out1
-
About to come up with an idea for an app and code it in a few hours before the deadline to a competition I forgot about let's go lol
-
A few years ago, one of the largest customers of our agency came up with an idea for a facebook app for Easter... the day before Easter Monday.
Managed to get the app working, but I didn't receive any overtime compensation from my employer...
I don't work there anymore, and I couldn't be happier. -
Finish at least one thing I started in 2021
* Learning Latin
* Learning Unity
* Learning Flutter
* Working on a personal app idea
God, why is it so hard to follow through with something I started? :/14 -
I actually want to rant and pitch a product idea here:
So I am furious when i found out Gravit Designer made offline mode premium only, seriously what the fuck. And Figma is getting no progress for the offline mode either - even lacking grids that I need (I might do isomorphic and I also need grids to keep things aligned).
To be honest I liked Figma more now than Gravit (screw you Corel for fucking up a great platform). So that's why I want to do something similar to Gravit Designer, universal and all, works in browsers, without the forced paywall in my face.
I always forsee premium as a way to add features to products when you need it, and as a way to let a developer know they're doing a good job. I want to make this kind of model stick, and it seems with the money-hungry fuckwits of Corel on Gravit, it ain't happening.
So that's why I want to build an designer app that does what Gravit does, except, I want premium to be more ethical, giving all the core features, add more customizabilty to the interface, and actually make the designer workbench yours. Heck, if its possible we can have Google Drive/Nextcloud integration as well for those who want cloud saves.
I badly want to do this because I believe someone out there shares my sympathy. Gravit was a nice product but was ruined by Corel's greedy paywall system. I won't be paying 99 monthly just to get offlline mode. Affinity and Figma's model is better.
Corel you fucking suck1 -
The icing on this app release cake was piped this morning.
The clients released the app into the wild, without our knowledge, despite some rather large, glaring issues that are present.
As to why they thought it was a good idea, who knows?1 -
Hey everyone 🙂
I’m looking for a little input on a project I’ve had in my head for a while.
I want to make a schedule app that would cater to personal, work and school schedules alike, and give points or rewards for completing tasks on time. Like a reward kind of system.
What features would you most look for in a schedular / reminder app?6 -
got an excellent idea for an android app.....opened play store......found hell lot of similar apps already there :(
-
I was looking forward to creating app like Alipay for US/EU market, then I realized Venmo exists. What do you think, is it still worth trying to compete? Outside of Venmo we don't really have any other competition.29
-
I've always loved to change technologies to work with...I developed Desktop applications, Web applications, android applications...and now I'm working on an IOS app and I have just one message to whoever came up with the brilliant idea of a drag & drop system for views in XCode:
I DO NOT RESPECT YOU AS A HUMAN BEING.
Sincerely,
Me1 -
Friendly reminder for hackathons, a great idea is better than a great app.
I saw amazing creations, from a virtual reality rowing machine to a camera that read a Connect 4 game into a AWS server live.
Yet, the hack that won the popular vote was an app that would tell your friend, through texts, where you were when you're heading over to pick them up.
A simple concept to implement, but a great idea.1 -
It's about valentine's day again. any idea what a single programmer like me can do?.
last year I made a chatbot app to wish me valentine's day 😂7 -
So the android app has been updated, i'd seen that the review was pretty favourable.
One of my biggest pet peeves is people rating an app low because they have no idea what has changed in the app or that they are complaining about inane stuff.
What annoys you folks about people who don't understand our work?4 -
Yaaay ! got A Really Great and Interesting idea for an App, and just woke up and ended up fogetting it. FINALLY
-
I don't drink, mainly because I'm not going to be 21 until November, but I have been extremely tired while programming before. One time it was like 4 in the morning and I just wanted to get my app to build successfully with no errors. I got that to happen, then went to bed. When I woke up seven hours later, I went back to work on the app some more, and I had no idea what I changed when I was borderline asleep to make the app build successfully. Go figure.
-
Not 100% hackathon, but I was once in one of those weekend coding challenges - aka: have idea, implement MVP, present to a Juri and get a chance to win a prize.
So, to start things off, you had a few months to prepare the idea, gather a team (minimum of 2, maximum of 5 per team) and register.
I gathered a few friends from university, that was cool. We were 5, I had the idea already, they agreed. I started talking business with some partners/governmental stuff (no time to explain all, ask in comments if you want to know).
2 weeks pass by after registering, still 1+ month before the event, 2 of the team members let me know they want to focus on university, so they cannot spend a weekend on this competition. Well, ok, still 3 people, no worries.
Fast forward, 1 week before the competition, another one says he won't be in town, we're 2. Still enough, we meet the requirements, it's just for the fun anyways.
Day 1 of the competition, I'm there waiting for my other teammate. Call him countless times, doesn't pick up. Later tells me he's sick.
I tell the organization about it. They asked: You can continue, but it's fine if you give up now.
> Yo, dafuck you mean give up? I'll die before I give up. It's for the fun anyways, worst case scenario I spend a nice weekend doing what I like *shrug*
So there I am, all alone, doing a first MVP of the mobile app in Android (without any prior android experience, and don't ask me why I chose to do mobile app for that project, was stupid back then).
Lots of nice things there, overall a good weekend, networking, food, gadgets and stuff like that.
Juri day, put on pretty clothes to present my super idea alongside my super MVP of the ugliest mobile app I've seen.
Judge 1: likes the idea, ugly app.
Judge 2: likes the idea, ugly app, could improve and work on the concept, etc
Judge 3: Lots of business questions, to which I came prepared with already potential clients and partners, liked that part although seemed a little confident of it working or not.
Judge 4: "Yo, that's the most stupid thing I've heard, not even gonna ask questions, that's just stupid"
Judge 5: A teacher in my university, the one to actually tell me about this competition, kind of like that meme from "How to train your dragon" where he does the thumbs up thing. Obviously the app sucks, but understandable, no one in the competition has much experience, bla bla bla
---
Final decision: No prize, fuck the idea, got a participation amazon voucher of like, $10 usd. *shurg*
--
Fast forward a few months, my aunt who shared the idea with me and who i was working with before the competition, sends me a link for an article on FB messenger.
The company where that MF judge worked at build a system exactly like the one I presented, claiming it was a very innovative idea. Never heard of them again, it was a consultation company (Deloitte), so I assume they didn't sell it well and dropped it also.
Moral of the story: I guess there's no moral, just have fun.2 -
Is it a good idea to develop non game app in Unity? Asking because I got an idea for a app and I know Unity very well. Way better than Xamarin for instance.3
-
Startup idea #318 - App that runs in the background while coding.. if a file has more than 150 lines prevent the user from typing more in it!
Oh and also check if the code has tabs/spaces and limit them accordingly. If user uses both prevent them from typing in it!4 -
During my internship, I fixed a bug in android app related to user data updation..
BUT I didn't knew it's root cause and I have no idea how I fixed it.
Also, it was satisfying.1 -
Aye, gonna throw this up here, does anyone have experience at building a mobile game with js (or tbh anything but unity). Right now we are thinking about phaserjs and wrapping it in phonegap app (i fucking hate the idea but its fine for a small game like this). But if there are better alternatives im open, for starter i have no idea how to fullscreen the canvas on this lol.8
-
I build an android app for a start-up. It took me 2 months to build that app. After I finished they didn't use the app as they started working on some different idea. They didn't even pay me for that app even after requesting many times..
Now after 1.5 years they have the audacity to come to me and ask me to work on a new Android app.
What should I do?5 -
The new NHS contact tracing apps appear to make use of Google Analytics (in the privacy policy section)
https://github.com/nhsx/...
No, I have no idea what's going on here, and considering how much the privacy implications of this app have been discussed this seems like an egregious oversight. I'm not even sure I can summon the effort to properly rant about it.1 -
me@hackathon: Sir, this is our App aimed to help farmers....
Judge(interrupting me): What's the novelty in your idea, it doesn't have ML, AI.
me: 😑12 -
Idea: So as curvew will be imposed around the world. Would it be a good idea to develop an app that would based on location assign a slot for people to leave the house for an hour a day?7
-
How do you handle it as a developer with people coming to you to tell you they have this big dream app and they want you to work on it. They have no money, No plan, just an idea and they want you to stop your life and get into it.2
-
just came to the conclusion that my current side-project is a bunch of crap...
now desperate finding a new app idea :/4 -
Newbie here, currently doing Udacity nano degree for full stack (mainly for Python as the other stuff I am confident with). Love this app, funny as f.
I'm curious why others decided to become Devs? I'm doing this because I have an idea for a webapp that will make me millions ;)17 -
I think I’ve gone backwards in terms of my progress from my start up app idea. Ah well. We go again.4
-
Just had my first app idea request from a friend. How do I tell them I'm not interested while being sincere?7
-
Working on personal app project..got a feature idea... work all night to develop the feature, at morning I realized that feature is useless in my app ..Fuck that moment

Follow up on previous post https://devrant.com/rants/1986014/...
Tell my dad about this and this is the convo we have when he goes "why didn't you think of that... in fact I had this app idea 2 years ago"

Guys I need an advice. I have a very good idea for a mobile app, but at the moment I know only C++. What would you recommend me to learn for building a mobile cross platform app, and, of course, what tools should I use? I'm completely lost, but I really want to develop this.4
-
Hey guys, I need to implement a scripting ability on an app but with a tiny language that we build.
But I have no idea where to start and I got pretty confused after a google search.
Any ideas? -
So I got a new project idea , an app that takes your image and fits it in a mac window like a border .
Basically when I make a new website or app and I want to post screenshots of it , just the plain screenshot of the app looks bland but if I have a nice aesthetic ✨ mac OS window around it with rounder corners and stuff , it would look very cool . I bet everybody here has seen something like this once or twice. Is there an app that does this already ? takes an image from the user and puts a window around it , with the minimize ,maximize and close buttons and let's the user download the final image . Not necessarily a mac window with there could be option for different types of windows . Even VS code repo on Github has a mac window around it lol . So I would like to make an app that makes this whole process easier instead of requiring you to edit images of your app (in case u don't have windows or a mac for screenshot)
What tools (tech stack )would I require to make a web app for this purpose ?5 -
I need to make a mobile app for a project, do you have any idea?,or something interesting that you have ever wished in an app?8
-
When you are coding a site and think it would be a great idea to hook it up to the app engine SDK. Nope wrong move now it has just gone to shit :(
-
Last Friday a coworker told me he was planning to go to a local hackathon in the city that weekend. Then I asked him to tell me what was the app they had planned to build and he said: `Oh no, I can't tell you, a lot of ideas have been stolen this way`, I thought that was rude by not telling me but whatever.
Today, I came to work, saw him and asked how did the hackathon go and he looked at me with sadness and said: `Dude, we screw it up, we had to left the contest`, `What?` I said, `Yeah, a couple of hours before the pitch some guy came to us to review what we were doing and we presented our idea, "an app to track bus routes" and he said "there is already a local app that does that and it was the winner of a previous contest`. I told him that I knew that app and her founder, he said he wished he had told me the idea last Friday so they could pivot to something else and not leave the contest.
Conclusion: Ideas are worthless, execution is everything.1 -
Hey guys, I'm planning to rewrite multiple asp.net applications in my company using Angular 4 & WebAPI/Node APIs. Do you have any suggestions?
We have around 20+ small to medium size applications which I'm planning to rewrite. Since these applications can be run in different machines I'm thinking of integrating them in a electron app and sharing the desktop app to the users.
What do you guys think?
Do you think it's a good idea? How do I proceed with this ? Any inputs are welcome.4 -
Yeah sure it is totally the fault of framework X being less popular than framework Y. That is the reason why you don't find devs for framework X.
The low pay and bad organisation has nothing to do with this. Yes it is probably the best idea to take the 4 years of work in X and continue it in Y. The devs will fight for a job where an Y app is integrated into an X app... -
Can someone recommend a good, free and easy to use service (web or windows app) for mobile apps prototype, mockups, etc. I want to create a visually rich and possibly clickable prototype for a mobile app idea before development.7
-
That moment when you need to add a feature to your very old app, but have no idea where to begin from
... *me now* -
I’m meeting an acquaintance who wants to discuss a web app idea they‘d like to have developed. I’ve always worked full-time and have no experience running a side gig, scoping a project or what questions to ask. I would appreciate any advice on how to approach this meeting and any resources that will help with scoping/pricing.3

Hello everybody,
I have an idea for an app and waned to get your opinion on what I should use.
I have experience in Java and ReactJs, but nothing in Swift.
So, I want to know what you all would suggest - should I use React Native or Java and Swift to create both my android and iOS app? I have read mixed reviews concerning React Native and its use longterm? However, it seems like its the easier options to push out both and Android and iOS app.
I'm very unsure, any suggestions would be much appreciated.6 -
Although 80% of the company is on vacation, we were forced to put out a beta version of the biggest part of our app that's used by tens of thousands of people.
The best is that everyone knows this is a terrible idea but they still don't give a shit. -
Question for you guys.
I have an Android app in which you can track when and how much you have worked, etc., especially aimed at (food) delivery drivers. I know those kind of apps already exist, it's a hobby project :). But I have no idea what to call it.
Any suggestions?3 -
🙋 Any fancy app idea I could build for trying out React on web and React Native for mobile? Kinda cool and something you always wanted to build but never got to it. #sayNoToTodos5
-
I think it's just me.
Every time I build something I feel as if I completely mess it up. For example, after a few days of working on an Android app after school, I feel like It's already become a mess. Perhaps it is just my aversion to making thousands of classes for every little detail, because I feel as if it would slow down my app (even if it were a minor penalty), but it usually makes for a onStart() function with ~90 lines of code which just makes me feel bad on the inside (and also a bad developer, so I wouldn't dare ask money for an app I built). Either way, if I would add these calls to other functions my Fragment/Activity class would still be fat. Also, typing 'context: Context' or 'Context context' just seems awkward.
I also feel like most frameworks are just a mess. Take Qt, for example. Quite a community touting how great it is (I use KDE Plasma btw) and I'm sure it is. I've got an idea for a desktop app but just the idea of it using some sort of JS (yes, I'm talking about QML which I'm considering) gives me the shivers. I already don't like Electron, so the idea of having JS embedded in a desktop app just doesn't sound right to me. But again, maybe it's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -
Struggling to write my Engineering Thesis code. Not because I'm afraid of tech, but because I have no idea what it should do.
I'm testing mobile apps performance, but getting the right idea is pain in the ass. :(
Never been too creative, but always have been over ambitious and lazy.
So the deadline is coming slowly, I have specified my 'tests' (authorization, API connection, heavy calculations, graphics, database handling) and still don't know what my app should do.
And ideas or suggestions what else is to test? -
Hi, everybody.
I have been working on an IOS app for a while and I´m about to finish it, and I would like to share it with developers and users from around the world.
Any idea of how to reach as many persons as possible? How and where to share the app?
Thank You for your responses!1 -
Anyone got any good ideas for a basic CRUD app? I am trying to learn PHP and am in need of and idea to start with.10

My head of products idea of an urgent bug is a feature that he really wants in the app.
Guess who’s got 22 ‘bugs’ to fix by Friday 🙁2 -
Alright, apparently, I can't Google.
I am wondering, is it possible, to develop an android app without android studio? And probably without Java?
My idea was to make a web app using mean stack and then just fit it into browser widget and voila.
I also don't believe that all of the apps I'm using are made with android studio...
What should I check out for better understanding of the whole android app development thing?6 -
Co-Worker (mechanical engineer): I have an amazing idea that I want to pitch to you!!
Me: Whats the idea?
Co-Worker: Let's make a social media app where you send a drawing to other people and possibly doodle on pics. The drawing or picture can't be saved and it's directly sent to people or a group.
Me: That's SnapChat.
Co-Worker: Oh...well my idea is cooler.
Me: *Rolls eyes* go back to work.3 -
So Google’s Gemini API challenge is currently ongoing and I am looking for idea suggestions.
- The goal is to create an AI enabled platform for web or mobile with Gemini API integration.
- The idea is expected to be unique or creative (unique ideas are favored so I heard)
- I found out the last winner of Google’s Dialogflow competition created a Mobile app for the elderly that provides screen flow guide on usage of some of Google’s product (ie: Youtube, Gmail, Drive etc.). This is just an idea guide and I see why such would win. It’s not a must requirement.
The final code will be open source and surely would credit the original idea owner. I need your ideas fellow devranters. What AI enabled app do you think have the best chance of winning this challenge? I have some time to spare on this one.5 -
What have you suggested at work which sounded like a good idea at the time, but now sounds like a nightmare?
I inherited a nasty old legacy c# desktop app a few years ago, I was a sql developer so it was a steep learning curve, but I’ve tried to make it better, fixing things as I go.
I had the bright idea of mentioning that I would look at starting to add unit tests etc.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m not so sure.3 -
Just learnt python for data science online. Suddenly, have this awesome idea for an app. Thanks to kivy, I could work with python. But wait, X websites find it good enough, Y websites not. And cross platform frameworks seem to be all Js. Basically, pursuing new idea means starting from literal scratch.
-
A random idea that I have a while ago but don't know how to make it: a ML app that can detect if the input image is porn or not.12
-
tictactoe squared. An online game build on top of the idea of tictactoe. I build this app with a friend back in the days when we used to go to school using plain html,js and express.js. no fancy frameworks or other tooling8

Does anybody have an idea how the height of the scrollbar of the devRant app is determined? It changes while scrolling, and I have not figured out yet why.4

Realized that there are individuals that wants a simple mobile app to try out their business idea and needs you to take care of all of it from writing requirements to deploying the app. Also from a third world country and would not get any offers for any embedded hardware job.2

Updated Android on my phone and I was looking for a full minute where's my music app... to find it's now called "Samsung Music" -.- what a great idea...
-
I want to dive into Flutter and need a simple app idea that I can start with. I want to learn while working on a useful project. Any suggestions?
PS: I built a calculator and a simple chart app few weeks ago and loved flutter. -
Hi there Devs and ranters, I'm new to devrant (well I've have the app for about 20 days and just read about stuff)
So, I just recently discovered that I want to Develop web and mobile apps, before this I was studying to be a Project manager..
In the past I would usually come app with great app ideas and would just think "why hasn't anyone made this yet" then I'd let it go.
But then one day last year an amazing idea for an app hit me for a huge organisation in my country and I figured I could probably get paid for this, but yet again I was too fucking shallow to realise that I should've made it myself.
So I took my app idea and carelessly shared it with a developer who then decided to create the app and not include me at all, he just said "im gonna let you know when it's done", stupid me just agreed to that. Time went by and I never heard anything from the guy, tried to call but he wouldn't pick up, went to his place and he already moved out.
At this point I already gave up on looking for him.
A few weeks later I'm on the playstore browsing for apps and there it was, my fucking app. I decide to download it and inside every fucking thing was exactly as I told the developer, all the functions and options that would be for that app were all in there.
I was a little mad, but after staying with the app for a few days I noticed that it didn't work at all, there were no notifications, no interaction nothing, it's just like a static app, then I was really just disappointed,..
This was about 2 months ago,
Since then I have come up with a lot of other great app ideas and I decided to start learning to code so I can develop my own mobile and web apps..
And just last week I had an idea for an app for the Univ that I graduated at, spoke to the director about it and he wants a full presentation in a month.
So Devs, don't be the guy in the story that doesn't involve the person that gave you an awesome idea, also don't be me in the story because I was a stupid lil shit for not realising what I wanted to do sooner!1 -
I was an intern in high school, and a hired Software Advisor right when I turned 18. Now, I'm 19, in College, and looking for a job with no idea where to look.. Any advice? I really like Python back end and iOS/Android app development..

BEHOLD! The voting power of Bill Gates!
j/k just a "bug" in my app, the rants were loaded this morning but going thru them now and upvoting.
But that gives me an idea for another app or maybe @dfox can just generate it from the database (not sure if he'd like me spamming the server to monitor the scores on certain rants).: A time graph of how a rant's score increases. -
Why the fuck did Apple just start testing my app using an ipv6 only network? I mean that is a good idea in general, but did they just start doing this recently, or did a major appledick decide that now, after 15 good releases, they should reject the app and force me to rethink my whole backend structure... Screw you, why didn't you tell me when I started?2

thinking about making git blogging viewer that will just pull markdown files from github blog repos and render them nicely for viewers. would anyone use it?
i imagine people would just commit markdown files to a repo, and then people could view them like a blog and follow a bunch of blogs (repo) on their phone or desktop. i’ll add support for jekyll and other markdown html generators too.4 -
Hey guys,
I'm studying in college and just got introduced to Android development and firebase. It's wonderful. And I'm wondering for an app like devRant would it be a good idea to store the data in firebase... If not, what else options are there? Also, I'm planning to work on a similar project for my sophomore year.
Any ideas guys?2 -
I'm and Android and iOS developer. This of course means that I can help everyone who asks to write their app idea, seeing as how it's so easy and I don't actually need my day job...SMH1
-
Yesterday there was a DevOps event in my office. I had developed an Android and iOS app for the same. Basically the idea was along with things like Agenda for the day, speak and partners information, the app could scan QR of expo booths. If a user visits all booths he is eligible for lucky draw prizes. It ended up being really awesome event. Global heads were really impressed by tech and innovation from India. And in the end, there were 5 lucky draws, and I won JBL truly wireless headphones😆😆

When you think about an app idea that you could potentially build all on your own, Do you get demotivated when you find out that about 15-20 apps are on the market doing the same thing ?7
-
Guys, long story short we found an investor for our app idea. What's the best route to go for us to get the people we need. Essentially we need a mobile app, but it may also need to be a kiosk, so should we look specifically for React Native developers to make a cross platform app or should we focus on ios, android, and kiosk apps natively? It involves access of sensitive information.
-
I am thinking about working on an app using which users will be able to create a survey or a set of multiple choice or sorting in a particular order questions amongst their friends or colleagues and at the end would get a response about which option received the most votes or which is the most preferred order.
The responses will be anonymous even to the creator of the questionnaire.
Is this idea good enough to work on? -
I joined a startup and suddenly all I thought I know was disappearing and a very complex creature fell into my laps asking me to code it. Then there’s these trello cards asking me to pick them up and start solving.
Well, first, no idea how the whole app is structured.
Good thing, have a supportive team for sure. -
Is it just me, that when tapping a rant on mobile the UI marks multiple list items as "selected", although only the one a actually tapped is opened?
It happens within the time I've written this, independently of app restart and it randomly highlights multiple rants below the selected rant, like a connected group of rants.
Anyone an idea?2 -
Not having ever completed a project, except for a really simple app my school asked me to do. It's like I start to make something, anything, but then I lose interest in it pretty quickly. I guess it's because I can't come up with an idea of something that I think would be really useful/fun.
-
Hi people,
I have been trying to come up with some idea for an android app as a side project, but no luck. Can you guys suggest some things I can work on.10 -
A bit dishearted here!
I was working on an app idea and building its admin panel in angular, node and firebase for database.
I was at the end of developing admin panel and the only thing remaining was data storage for images.
I thought Firebase Storage is solution for that but now after 2 days of endless searching I realize Firebase Storage is a joke and its just Google Cloud Storage which is not Free :/
I am a student and a passionate Android developer. But this is a huge hurdle in my way.
If anyone has a better idea of how to get this done then please help.
I just need free file hosting to upload images from my admin panel and then download from Android app.3 -
Sometimes i feel being bad and wrong is better than being good. At least people will not demean you.
Case A : the bad guy
F : Hey man how are you doing?
Me : nothing man just smoking weed and being high all day
F : ugh . Ok i have to go
Case B : the good giy
F :hey man how are you doing?
Me : Awesome man! I have been learning and making apps for last 2 years, recently released this very nice ui notes app with unique notification capability. Took me a month but am so proud of it.
F1 : just the notes app? I made a tiktok clone in 1 month after learning android
Me : :'(
F2 : notes app? I made this awesome *small butunique app idea* app that got 50k installs
Me: :''(
F3 : 2 years? In 2 years i have learned so much that i can now make this puny notes app in ios Android website all synced up in 5 different frameworks with 10 additional features.
Me- ;''(
F4 : cool app. So now can you make this *random idea* app for me? Here are the designs and resources You seem experienced,How long would it take you?
Me : umm i guess so.. idea seems plausible, but i haven't worked on some things that are needed to complete it. So... x days?
F4 : X DAYS?!! wtf man ? Don't you know how to code? Does this looks like a task of x days? You even an engineer bro? Make it in 3 days
Me :
(Ps : replace F with friends , managers , ... Everyone :/)2 -
Rant/Site idea
This is just a idea, but sometimes rants can create new rant's what need a place of there own, maybe adding a option that lets you Re-Rant or something like this what will take someones reply as the leading rant and you comment as the first reply to that rant, Letting the original rant to say true to its topic5 -
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I published a pretty small app about a year ago that was just a small financial widget for your home screen. Recently I added more in app functionality and graphs but left the widget part unchanged.
For some reason I am now getting even less installs and my active user count has dropped. Any idea why people who used it in the widget only days would suddenly leave?
The link is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...2 -
that moment when you have a really promising idea for an app but still don't know how to do it / know exactly it is still a long way to go.
-
Is it just me... Or is there like two different scrolling behaviours in the app on android? When I've for the blue theme with white text it seems really gittery when I'm first scrolling down rant comments or the main rants feed.. Then about halfway down it goes much smoother... No idea why...
-
Whoever's idea it was to fuck with the comments section in the YouTube app, your job title should be re-evaluated because you are a fuck up.5
-
Want to write a webapp to practice my Nodejs and Vuejs skills. Any ideas, you were wondering about (no to-do list)?
I was thinking about to involve some external API.4 -
If one day you wake-up with a billion idea (tech/app) in mind.
What would be the stack for develop it?5 -
I know my development skills are getting better because I am having more people pitch me ideas....to many ideas...1

anyone wants to share a good app idea? i have good coding skills but lagging behind on brainstorming a product3
-
I have to deal with the hardest part of programming: naming things! i fucking hate it, being so incredible uncreative finding a name for a side project..
So heres my idea: I want to build a little cli tool (and probably in the future an app or a web interface) with a rest api on my server for simple storing text snippets. I will be a simple key value store, but my goal is experimenting with new languages and software ;)
I can't imagine a cool name for that thing, do you have an idea? :)3 -
Is it a good idea to code my Android app keeping sqlite in mind before actually migrating to a noSQL version?
The primary reason for doing this is not having to deal with APIs or server side coding and also faster testing and prototype development.
Any ideas or suggestions?7 -
Hey, can anyone give me an idea on how syncing works?
(Been searching for past few hours, didn't went past some weird advance server admins stuff or cloud backup ads.)
All i wish to do is to make a service for my app that will run every night and upload/delete /modify (basically , sync) my app's local database to the server.
Just gimme a rough idea on the algorithm to use, i have done till running the service every night( but what exactly it should do, i have no idea)3 -
I am looking for a partner for an idea that I have. Looking for experience in UI/UX design as well as database incorporation. Can be iOS or web app developer. Comment if interested5
-
Clearly Appcelerator & Titanium. I still can't understand why the previous dev decided it was a good idea to launch an app with that 😡1
-
Me yesterday: finally weekend is coming, I'll start the research for this cool app idea that I want to make for a side project
Me today: Suma1l you magnificent son of a bitch, that blademail surprise... (I'm watching Dota vods on bed while eating snack endlessly) -
Hey guys,
Just a simple question: I've got 2 raspberry pi's, and I use them only for VPN + PiHole at the moment. Do you have any idea of what I could implement? Maybe a Flask web app?1 -
I'm thinking about creating a chat app in Azure/c#/websocket. Is this a bad idea in terms of costs or will I be better off going something like node JS/aws?9
-
If you were to start making a lightweight, fast, multiplatform client app, architecturally clean and simple, with as little of the JS(style) libraries and packages and transpilers and weird convoluted and/or unpleasant syntax trends like JS or flutter...
ideally (or at least minimally) something at least as straightforward as making a WinForms app in C#
...what language/tool/platform/tech stack would you choose?
...asking for a friend with totally not an absolutely cool idea that needs to exist.11 -
Depends on when it comes out, often it involves rebuilding my portfolio. Other times it's building a project idea, had a light week at work once and built a small app in Aurelia, then rebuilt it in Vue to test out both and compare them.
When I was looking into PWAs I rebuilt my react native app into react. Lol -
Facebook Pages Manager Android app is not working properly. I am not receiving push notifications when people contact me via page inbox. Already tried everything I could think of: disabling battery saving for pages manager app, making sure notifications are all checked in facebook page settings and etc. Any idea how to fix this?
-
Am thinking of hosting an e-commerce web app but also get the benefits for google apps for work.....
any idea for the reliable and affordable service??1 -
I want to create an app with usertype 1 and usertype 2 in which both should have separate login forum but in single app and whatever usertype 2 posts, usertype 1 should be able to see in their news feed and should be able to response. People are telling me you should create separate app for each usertype but i don't like that idea.....Help me guys if anybody know what should i do.1

I am developing an app for industrial automation that requires frequent user input. I am exploring the idea of using voice input to input data. The problem is the application will never have access to the internet during use. This is due to being in the middle of nowhere and security requirements. So I am looking for voice control libraries/systems to control an app that can be installed on a Windows 7/10 machine.
Has anyone had any success with a completely self-hosted voice control system?1 -
This startup contracted me to develop an app for them. They gave me the mockups and said they need it in 7 weeks. Two apps in 7 weeks, no problemo. Almost done with the first app then they came saying they are changing everything. How can you decide to change your entire app and concept mid development? You haven’t even tested the market to know whether your idea holds.3
-
Thought of an idea for an app I want to start working on as a personal project. Was thinking of using Ionic to create it as I have some familiarity with Angular already but have never used Ionic itself. Thoughts? Concerns?
-
What do u think guys about the generic idea to add static methods in a class that will be some sort of "thematic helpers" that will be used in the whole app ?10
