Got call from extremely angry customer, our product is shit and doesn't work. At all. Important customer so I went to visit.
He had the perfect setup, our product to the left, our competitor's to the right.
He connected the Ethernet cable to their product, it worked. He plugged it out and connected to ours... Nothing. Shit.
I started to debug on the premises, took logs, everything. It seemed like our product didn't receive any data at all. What the fuck? Tried everything, debugged low level, still nothing. Sweating as hell.
After two hours I got a strange feeling. So I swapped place, our product to the right, competitor's to the left. Now OUR product worked, competitor's zilch.
THE FUCKING ETHERNET CABLE HAD A GLITCH. IF YOU BENT IT TO THE RIGHT IT WORKED, IF YOU BENT IT TO THE LEFT IT WAS BROKEN.
I had never seen a customer be this embarrassed in my life. He apologized to me, my boss, his boss, the Queen, everyone.
We got the contract.20 -
Not a windows hate rant, just a funny encounter at work.
Was configuring KDE on my work pc and got the windows key to work after a little configuration.
Me: YAY I finally got the windows key to launch the application menu bar thingy!!
Colleague 1 (fellow support engineer): WINDOWS?! Thanks for the ear cancer mate 😞
Colleague 2 (fellow support engineer): Hey stop swearing!
Colleague 3 (senior Linux engineer): *grabs nearest waste bin, pulls it open, puts head in and starts to make vomiting noises* *pulls head out: don't do that again 🤢"*
Colleague 4 (senior Linux engineer): *gives me a death stare for about a minute"
Me: *completely losing it* 🤣
I fucking love this place 😊24 -
PM: That screwdriver you built me is really nice. I like how it works with all screws and bolts, does the work itself, etc., but I simply can’t get it to paint, and I really need it to cut my sandwich. Can it cut my sandwich?
PM: Also, since you finished it, the neighbor’s can opener doesn’t work, my dog got fleas, and our screw supplier ran into shipping issues. Fix these ASAP!
Bonus:
Also, remember that hack I forced you to do despite you telling me it wouldn’t work? Yeah it isn’t working. You need to fix that too.20 -
I used to do some freelancing and one of the main clients I worked with had a project they hired me for that used Drupal. I fucking hated it. I thought it was bloated (and slow as fuck), unnecessarily complex, and just all around a horror to work with.
Even though that was many years ago, from other devs I've met, it seems like Drupal never really got much better. One devops guy who worked at the previous company I was at told me about some benchmarks he had done on Drupal in his previous work. The performance results he got were an absolute joke - awful concurrent performance and just a brutally slow CMS.
Needless to say, since that freelance project, I've never used Drupal again and never will.14 -
My parents recently got divorced and sold their house, so I had to go through all my old stuff and found this beauty! A pair of new bateries and it still work! Fuck Yeah!14
-
Had an interest in IT security some time ago, so I downloaded some tools to experiment a little and research to get some first hand experience since a lot of the course material we have at work is too vague....
Guess who got a visit from the police 👮
😡16 -
8 am, got in to work, everything has exploded overnight. The servers are dead, the scripts aren't running, everyone has panicked. So many emails.. So many Skype messages. I wish I wasn't the only one who can fix it. Send help (and coffee).25

Tried to impress the boss with my work ethic by staying late to install a new VoIP system. Wasn’t even part of my job description. A few days later I had a flat tire on the way to work. It took me a couple hours to get that taken care of. When I got to work, the boss told me I had to work 2 extra hours that week to make it up. I reminded him that I had worked overtime recently to install his new phone system. He said, “Doesn’t matter. You still need to make up the hours.”
From that moment on I never worked one second more for him than I had to. I quit less than a year into the job.13 -
Got assignment that needs to be written in C.
I write mostly Python.
It's ok i got it.
*after 5mins*
WHY THIS SHIT DOESNT FUCKIN WORK.
ah shit, i need to declare the variables.8 -
Someone at work trying to impress me: I recently got a really nice PC! It runs Microsoft 10 and has an i5 graphics card and a high performance case!
Me:6 -
So today I got removed from my freelance project because the client found out I listen to slipknot! What the actual FUCK? How the FUCK does it matter what I listen to?
And that cunt eater isn't willing to pay for the work I've already completed since "Slipknot is anti-Christian".
Burn in hell you piece of shit.21 -
Got bored at work today and tried to write a program to do my job for me. Security and compliance saw it in the logs (trying to run unauthorized program) and came to give me a hug.11
-
So, I just got up, opened my sister's laptop to work (she gave it to me while I was in this small trip) and I see this. She was like "if you break it, I'm gonna kill you" and I said "oh no! What am I gonna do? Hammer it or something?" Fuck my luck, seriously16

No work is going to be tolerable if you don't enjoy it. If you got into programming or IT or any industry simply for the money you can earn doing it, you're in for a BAD TIME.
I love computers, linux, programming, configuration, automation, and problem solving. So I love what I do. I am currently three weeks into 13 weeks of parental leave, and I have been having dreams about work at night.
The best piece of advice I can offer to someone who has trouble getting motivated is: make sure to like it first.10 -
Spent nearly a day to get this tiny laptop-tablet to work.
I got myself a second hand Asus T100TAF but Linux compatibility was far to be found. Online resources said I'd be very lucky if I'd even get the touchscreen or the WiFi to work.
I've been installing distro's all day and I finally have a working version!
Lubuntu with Budgie as desktop environment. Touchscreen works out of the box and some random person on the Linux mint forum linked to a github thing. Lost all hope already but this made the fucking WiFi work.
Can dock and undock it and it works great.
Thanks to all open source devs for this!18 -
I like my windows phone I got from work. It gives me no reason to even look at it when I'm not working.2

How to be a Dev:
Step 1: have a great idea
Step 2: start work on great idea
Step 3: read a blog about someone who also has a great idea and finishes it quicker than you prototype it
Step 4: check back daily and see them gloat about how much money, fame and shit they got from said idea
Step 4: rant about it on Dev rant to vent anger9 -
I got my first own office... We did it. We just painted our mini Iranian office in two nights and we about to code it,has 5 min distance to our college and it's a golden opportunity to work and study at the same time.8

I applied to Amazon recently not really thinking about it I was just bored. Dropped my CV and I was asked to fill in why would I want to work in that position. I un-ironically put “It sounds like a lot of fun”, got rejected instantly then got an unrelated message from an Amazon recruiter from another division inviting me to apply, rejected it because it didn’t sound as fun.
I’m an honest bloke I just want to have fun.11 -
Worked 8 hours on a feature to send attachments from our system (A) to another (B) via B's API. Perfect code, yet I couldn't make it work. B's API has full and extensive documentation for said feature. Contacted B to ask about it, got reply: "Oh yeah - we havent enabled that yet but thought it was handy to have it ready in the docs"

Colleague: Oh I'm a diabetic but What you've got here aaaaaa.....
My Brain:
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Me: Oh come-on already One small piece won't kill you9 -
Things happened this year so far in chronological order:
Applied to PhD and got all rejected
Graduated without a job because I thought the last event wouldn’t happen
Decided to take more shots at universities in Europe and Canada
Paper got published and got best paper honorable mention
Interviewed by couple professors and the one in Canada seems to be interested in me
School in Canada, which rejected me before, reopened my case for review
Bank account got closed because my parents transferred me some money to support my unemployment ass and bank thought it was a fraud
The review process took so long I got hopeless and thought, if I end up writing webpages for other people, why not doing it now? And did two webpages which are in my previous rant, pretty good and highly recommended imo
Canada school promised a date but didn’t follow that date, depression attack
Finally sent them an email and got an answer saying the admission approved my application and they are working on paper work. But I still don’t believe it because I’m paranoid
Got an email from a professor today confirming they are doing paper work and I should receive official paper soon.
You can see the dramatic ups and downs, but in the end, guess I’m going to Toronto for phd12 -
I got my first job as a full stack dev when someone saw my web project on github.
It was my first ever web project and don't know if I'm actually ready to work.7 -
StackOverfllow -> Copy Code -> Doesn't work -> Study its working -> Read related info on other websites -> Code starts to make sense -> Do the required changes in code as per the understanding -> Got it working.
I only learn if the initial 2 steps fail. Else I skip the latter. -
Got a call for work around 0100. Missed it. Got a call at 0530, got that one. Now handling the other call at 0700. I have a requirement to be on within 15 minutes. It's been 6 hours.21

I just asked for a 42% raise having an already good salary and got it easily.
The best thing? I helped this company grow so much I barely work half the time I used to due to the newly hired workforce. I can work on my own projects so much.9 -
This one time I developed some useful plugins and a command line interface for the platform we built at work.
Then when it was done I thought it had some good value so I created a pull request to donate it to the platform. That same day I got 3 complaints that my pull request did not conform to conventions and that there was no ticket for it and they complained about the fact that it made their jobs harder.
It was in fact the last time I developed something for work in my spare time.1 -
Trying to setup server monitoring for one server (will deploy it on all my servers once this works well).
Getting these email notifs to work is a bitch 😅
(can't do pushover etc since those require GCM and I've got Google blocked out of my phone)20 -
I am roughly 12 hours away from a deadline that seemed pretty impossible.
I finally got everything to work, it seems I'm actually going to make it.
After so many hours of frustration, despair and walking in circles, it is finally fun again :)7 -
made my first dollar(actually $4) on internet.
got a gig on fiverr.
client wanted his joomla website to be unresponsive so website looks same on all devices.
never touched joomla.
it took ne 2.5 hours but actual work was only 10-15 minutes.
yippiiiieee.....😀😀😇😇10 -
To those wondering what's it like to work in corporates and "HOW slow is it, really...?".
My corp project contract ended 1.5 months ago.
Today I got an email saying my access request has been finally approved and implemented.6 -
I’ve started the process of setting up the new network at work. We got a 1Gbit fibre connection.
Plan was simple, move all cables from old switch to new switch. I wish it was that easy.
The imbecile of an IT Guy at work has setup everything so complex and unnecessary stupid that I’m baffled.
We got 5 older MacPros, all running MacOS Server, but they only have one service running on them.
Then we got 2x xserve raid where there’s mounted some external NAS enclosures and another mac. Both xserve raid has to be running and connected to the main macpro who’s combining all this to a few different volumes.
Everything got a static public IP (we got a /24 block), even the workstations. Only thing that doesn’t get one ip pr machine is the guest network.
The firewall is basically set to have all ports open, allowing for easy sniffing of what services we’re running.
The “dmz” is just a /29 of our ip range, no firewall rules so the servers in the dmz can access everything in our network.
Back to the xserve, it’s accessible from the outside so employees can work from home, even though no one does it. I asked our IT guy why he hadn’t setup a VPN, his explanation was first that he didn’t manage to set it up, then he said vpn is something hackers use to hide who they are.
I’m baffled by this imbecile of an IT guy, one problem is he only works there 25% of the time because of some health issues. So when one of the NAS enclosures didn’t mount after a power outage, he wasn’t at work, and took the whole day to reply to my messages about logins to the xserve.
I can’t wait till I get my order from fs.com with new patching equipment and tonnes of cables, and once I can merge all storage devices into one large SAN. It’ll be such a good work experience.7 -
Past few weeks, I have started to work late night and sleep whole day. I go to office at around 7pm and returns back next day 8-9am. I found it super productive.
But, my manager wasn't happy about it and now, she shifted daily scrum at 1 PM and emailed me to make sure I attend it daily.
Now, I have to fix my sleeping cycle... Nights are so great to work. Silent and nobody around.
Now, from tomorrow, I got a new challenge everyday to make it to scrum daily.6 -
Yesterday ... well no, today it was, I couldn't go to sleep because my brain couldn't stop thinking about solutions for this problem I had and I literally got up from bed and went to my computer to test my ideas. It still didn't work and eventually I got so tired that I went back to bed, I was still thinking about solutions when I fell asleep.12

Do coding outside of work. I got into the industry because I enjoy writing code, but your job won't always be fun. That's why they give you money. Make sure that spark of joy doesn't die.
Or, when it does die, at least you'll have something to rant about.3 -
I got some work on a new project so I ran the 500, or so, unit tests and it took almost 3 minutes. Everything was mocked and no external dependencies so I got curious as to how on earth they could take so long.
I found some suspicious code doing a while loop over a date range incrementing by 1 day each time. It turned out the tests didn't initialise the start date which defaults to 01/01/0001, and there are 5 scenarios!
I got test execution down to a respectful 10s.5 -

I got a promotion at work!
Is it weird that I don't want it because I still feel like I have too much to learn to no longer be a "junior"? I'm happy that my hard work is paying off but I'm worried that this is how bad senior devs are made.7 -
Am I the only one who loved coding - I could spend hours and hours on my personal projects; but after I finally got a job, I'm just too exhausted from coding at work to do any coding at home? How did you overcome it?7
-
After four months of working alone, finally got another developer at work. Unfortunately they hired him as my boss. He came to me yesterday with a new project and told me to drop everything I'm working on for it. I asked him the timeline for it, a week. Why. Why the fuck. Go fuck yourself.16
-
I got unemployed 6 months ago. I tried to find work for about a month but the answer was always "we call you back when a position is available" and "let me ask the team if they think you are good". So far no one responded, then I got tired of that.
The next month I became self-employed so i can make contracts and work for more smaller projects. Not too much time later I met a company that offered me a long time contract for them. I don't hesitated to accept it.
Luckily since then I have this company and a few smaller jobs.
It was a steep change in my life but was worth it.7 -
Dont get attached to your code at work! Coz it's not your code, you got paid for writing that code and that's it.5
-
$number = 3000/365*365-3000
echo $number
Output:

No, Just No. I really like you PHP but thats supposed to be zero. I don't got time for your Tantrum's. I got work to do!
PS: Does anyone know why this happens? Solved it by rounding on 10 decimals but prefer it would just answer 0 instead of me having to force it back.23 -
FUCK SAFARI!!!!! I am developing our new company website and have a deadline tomorrow. It is built with flexbox WHICH SHOULD WORK EVERYWHERE BY NOW. The new website works FINALLY GREAT in all browsers now and then I just tested it in Safari (which I did not do before) on my mac and SO MANY THInGs doNT WORK! WHATTA FCUK?? Birthday rant !dev
>Be me. Buy 20 doughnuts for everyone in company, two more than there are people working in the office, just to be safe.
>Be one of 5 other people that came to work today. Everyone else either are sick, are working remotely or went on a delegation.
>Watch as 14 doughnuts slowly decay in the kitchen.
Well... At least I've got my package from devRant. Thanks for quick shipping! I only got it today because there was tracking. Fucking post in Poland is shit, they "tried to deliver it yesterday but there weren't anyone at home" even though I was and I haven't even got notice in the mailbox.4 -
When you've got a job you're happy with.
That's it in my book. Studied it and persuaded someone to hire you to do it? Enjoy that job, and it pays the way? Good work. Of course you'll likely go further than that in time, which is great - but there's no great magical point to "strive to" so to speak.6 -
I was making a prank app which turned to my first virus.
One day my mother told me that the programers in her work were offering to her to show them the virus and if their program dont catch it they will give me a reward. It was not catched by the program and i got the reward it was not so big but the feel was awesome7 -
Finally got my nginx config to work properly (it shouldn't work but it does so I'm not fucking touching it).
Request with curl: check, right http code and getting data back properly.
Request with any browser (with and without incognito): right http code, AND ONLY SEEING DATA WHEN I ECHO ANYTHING BEFORE SENDING THE RESPONSE WITH PHP. When I don't echo whatever before sending the response, the browser doesn't see the data but DOES see the http status code.
HOW?!19 -
It works. It finally works!
After an 8 hour session I got my crawler to work and give me basically every anime op/ed I long for.
All that using Elixir even though I'm still fairly inexperienced with both elixir and functional programming
I'll try to create an API and eventually Maybe even a database tomorrow (or rather in a couple of hours)5 -
Conversation between my husband and myself.
H: I ordered a game for the switch last week. It was delayed by USPS, and it looks like I got a partial refund due to it being late.
Moi: That's your mail privilege at work.
H: Did you really just make a mail pun? *Snerk*
Moi: This is why we work. ♥️5 -
In my first year of college right now, and on the first test we had to write some C# ConsoleApplications. We got instructions of what we have to taken as input, what we had to do with it and output it to the console.
I've tested them all and they all work correctly, which was the main objective. I have used the correct data structures, but I didn't get top mark. Instead, I got lower because "I didn't do it her way".
WELL F*CK YOU TOO!!! I hope this is not how every test/exam goes6 -
"Here's an example code for Commodore 64. It should work on your Commodore 16 if you just leave out the POKEs and PEEKs."
Said by my sister somewhere in the mid 80s. This particular advice was silly, but I owe her for my interest in coding. It was actually her who begged our parents to get us a home computer, and took programming courses. She got bored with it though, and I got hooked up for life. Thanks sis!6 -
I quit my job… it got so exhausting, it had become all about last minute work and ETAs. The more I worked the sicker I felt. It started directly impacting my physical health which ended up affecting mentally too. I feel good that I got out of something very toxic but at the same time not working kinda makes me sad when I look at others working. I have consciously taken a break to clear my mind but it affects me that I don’t know what next.2

Making a small update to an ionic app then spending a whole day trying to figure out why a button doesn't work. Tried everything to fix it and got no error messages.
Finally discovered it was because the button was inside a label and not a div.
Yeah, fun times. -
When I got to learn about json yesterday I hate it cause I need to do extra work to MVC project. But after today the instructor told us what it does, and I love it. Gonna start learning this stuff more tomorrow1

My colleague got fired. In my country, you need to work x weeks.
So they told him, his last day is start of June. Then they made an error in their official document... So his last day got prolonged with an other week... Then a different error in the new document.... An other week...
Now he got the news that his last day is prolonged with 2 weeks since he already had holidays planned before he got fired. He of course took his holidays thinking it would have 0 effect. They had the time to check this shit out.
He never got the news before that taking the holidays would again prolong his last day...
His last day was delayed 4 times...

Current lappy got about 4GB RAM and not enough cores. I can't even run krita without it slowing down more the more I work on a file.
It would be frustrating if only I wasn't so depressed.
So yeah, due to being broke and lack of nerves, I'm gonna completely stop working on the comic for now.22 -
Thanks, @trogus & @dfox! Got my stress ball yesterday, brought it in to work today. And here he sits upon his custom pedestal. (his name is Dave, btw.. he just looks like a Dave to me..)7

Has anyone had to hack into a server so they can set up their work,
Literally have a client asking me to do this change to their site and they are asking the dev who is controlling it but they just not letting me access ..
Long night ahead 🙄 got to add a ftp account ... All I need to do is add small lines of code for tracking, but this guy doesn't want to let me on it cause I'm slowly taking over his work... if he did his job right it's not like it would be happening anyway6 -
After lots of interviews and waiting and hard work just got something similar to my dream job.
I am so happy. Thanks for all your success rants they gave me the motivation to keep going when it seems there was no hope.
Remember everyone just keep going, keep trying, keep pushing.
Happy ranting.2 -
I get about 4-5 hours sleep. Like today: I went to work, made my lunch at work, got changed for football, played football from 7-9pm got home at 9:30, cooked, ate, showered and dried my hair and it's now 1am.
Tomorrow I got football training for another team so again I'll be getting into be at about 1am.
Also I forgot go mention ive got to get up at 6 for work And Friday I have to be at the doctors for 7. Yeyyyyy me!!! Don't even ask me about the weekend...
I feel like this classifies as a rant because I don't get to code at the weekends and it kills me 😡😡 especially when I want to contribute to certain packages and said I would. So fuck you social life. Fuck. You.
Ohhh and those fucking 'friends' that guilt trip you into seeing them because "you haven't seen me in ages 😢😢" there's a reason for that Barbra (keeping her identity secret) I'm fucking depressed and tired. Fuck the fuck right off.8 -
When good developers are afraid of refactoring and adding new classes is something to be feared, you need to rethink your architecture.
In fact, if there's ever that "dark corner" of code that no-one likes to work with, you've got to fix it.
It's like continuous deployment. We do it often because it's hard and having to deploy regularly forces us to make it easier.2 -
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY IT IS HARD TO GET A JOB AS JUNIOR DEV? This is because you don't need any knowledge about coding to get the fucking degree!!
I would love to work harder but it should meen something if you own the fucking paper!
Sorry got triggerd after reading another rant!8 -
* How I solve a problem*
"Okay, it seems to be interesting, OK think solve it generally"
*Solved the problem manually
"Okay pseudo code is /do this and that/ break it and write Algo.
Seems like it will work,
Making all sense
Okay let's code"
*Wrote in IDE
" Hmm compile and execute"
*Expected output : Hey you!
*Actual output : F you!
Me: What the hell
"Uhh! Just gonna apply brute force"
*Somehow got the actual output = expected output
"I knew, it gonna solve it but how it worked?"
*Thinking
*Thinking....
*Thinking and it's 2 am
"Oh! I'm done, I'm going to sleep"
*4 am, while lucid dreaming
"That's how that thing worked, I got it"
*Relieved
*Next day using the logic dreamt of

Worth it 🤣🤣🤣🤣6 -
I just got my Python project working on my new work PC!!! It took all morning 😂😂😂😂😂
I had to basically hack my company so I could do my job.
More specifically, I had to install a proxy server so Python, and other CLI tools, could access the internet via our company's NTLM/web proxy server.... After some IT morons reconfigured it... without testing or providing us a way to continue using it...1 -
I think I know now where "Pet project" got its name from: 1) Most of us would rather play with it all day instead of going to work. 2) As it grow bigger, eventually you'll have to shed out a couple bucks for it, and.. 3) Your PM would be FURIOUS if he caught you playing with it at the office.1
-
No rant here but just wanted to remind the ladies and gentlemen to take that break and spend time with your family or friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, and pets. If someone s been meaning to do it and got bogged down by work, I hope this serves as a reminder.3

Feels good to brought dead laptop to life.
Got dead laptop(person who gave it to me for free, said it doesn't turn on, and he got new one and this one is just for recycling), which got some liquid. Changed palmrest, keyboard, changed cable which is connecting to io board with power button, changed thermal paste and it working like a charm. Maybe in the future I will change screen. Screen has some pink spots, but it's only visible on dar theme. Added 16 GB ram, 512 gb ssd. Now I am using it as work computer. Dell Latitude E74507 -

I basically fried my rc255 rfid reader.
Bought two more and got them working!8 -
Today I dropped and updated a database to override it with local changes. Turned out the same dB was used by another project.
I just destroyed a week worth of work and content.
Good thing I took a dump before dropping everything. Got it running in 5 Minutes7 -
Got stucked in a problem with recursion in php, almost 2 days no sign of progress until i told my co worker how my code works, then i found the error and it work. I think developers need to talk about the code to realize whats wrong with the code.9

I had an after work meeting, i was supposed to take it from home, i got busy trying on my new dresses and totally forgot 😱😂

*pointing on IE icon* but does it work on the internet?
Setting my lovely grandma's new router since she now got fiber. Opening Firefox and pages load fast, still had to show that is also worked on "internet" to make her happy2 -
It took me 5!!!! fucking hours to do it but I did.
I got linux to work with my RTX 2070 oh my god
Most of that time was spent figuring out what exactly was wrong because the problem is hella common but the cause doesn’t seem to be so i was sent off in the completely wrong direction a bunch of times
Apparently Nouveau doesn’t support my GPU yet and installing the binary driver from nvidia seemed impossible but i pulled it off thanks to some random stranger on askubuntu.com
Unfortunately i got it working on elementary os instead of ubuntu so now i have to go install ubuntu 🤷♂️13 -

After 4 weeks of no coding i start slowly missing it. especially when i'm reading dev rant 😁
Got some time for myself to upgrading elzdev 2.9 to elzdev 3.0
I can highly recommend you to do something good for yourself and spend some time alone with no work.
I chose Barcelona for one month 😍
And now i can't wait to start work again at the begining of november 😄4 -
"Did you really buy a macbook to put ubuntu on it?"
"Wow why would you use such an overpriced piece of garbage just to put linux on it?'
"You made the worst choice of hardware to put ubuntu on"
Maybe, just maybe, I didn't fucking buy it myself and I got it from work? Maybe I didn't fucking pay a dime to get a laptop to put ubuntu on it? Ever considered that I got it for fucking free and have the privilege to do what I want with it?
Go fuck yourself if your first assumption is that I would actually buy a macbook just to erase MacOS from it12 -
Yay! Finally got my first job in IT.
They call it just "IT admin/sysadmin", but it's... eh..
What I do is make sure the servers work (sysadmin part) and make desktop/mobile apps. So far, the company seems to be quite nice, there are already 4 devs who are friendly. *knocks on wood*

Just had my first insomnia night, I simply could not fall asleep! While laying in my bed I had great ideas for work and for my home projects, like new features, infrastructure and even implementation details. Now that I'm up I can't remember most of it, of course!
Worst part about it is that when I got to bed I had about 5hrs to get some quality sleep, now I got non it feels like. Fuck.
Can anyone relate? :/7 -
I got VB script blocked from all the computes in high school
I had a laptop to do my work in class on (my handwriting is terrible, dyslexia and other things) and I was playing around with VB script making a little text adventure game with dialog boxes because I was bored, it got quite long and I was happy with it but then one day when I tried to open the file it said the network administrator had blocked this type of file from being opened... Got convinced to work with a boss who seem to know it all in tech.
I honestly thought he knew tech, to code at least.
And then one day he referred to Java as the same as JavaSrcipt.
Oh no.3 -
“You want to know the answer to that” is the answer I got to my question about a piece of code...
I guess he thought he’s too good for the job.
The dude had decent amount of knowledge but was arrogant as fuck.
Every time I asked him a question he would react as if I was making him work without pay that too on a Sunday (it wasn’t)
P.S. fucker got rejected2 -
What's the point of a farewell email at work?

Had a burnout at my last job when I worked myself to the bone to cope with stress, a failing relationship and not having much money. Also, made a crap ton of mistakes at work because of it.
Didn't sleep much, started skipping lunch to save what little money I had so I could commute (friends treated me every now and then, still grateful), dropped out of college because couldn't juggle work, studies and got chewed out by my family every day and just worked non-stop.
The end result was that I collapsed when I got home one night and woke up at 3 am with a severe migraine; stayed awake till sunrise then left for work again (got scolded really badly by everyone, felt loved). Fun times.1 -
I'm lead frontend developer/ consultant on a big government project, it's 10 days to release and I couldn't make it to a dinner with girlfriends extended family.
Pretty sure I just got dumped as she doesn't want to be in the way for my work so she is packing her stuff and leaving my apartment tonight.

Last week I finished what I thought to be unpaid work experience working in IT (more like programming), at the end of it I had a meeting with the boss who offered me paid work next summer and also gifted me a £150 amazon voucher for the work I did.
I sold my XBOX (ew the unproductivity) and use the voucher to buy a Mac Mini. Going from Windows, Mac OS X is significantly better, I prefer bash to power-sh*t.
TLDR; I worked for 5 weeks and got a Mac3 -

Trying to get part time or remote mobile app development job in Milan.
Somehow got a job interview for a company based in USA for remote work. Cleared 3 rounds, got the final contract. For the final assessment, had to make changes in their existing project. Didn't get proper answer to my queries on time. Submitted results as per understanding. Got a rejection mail rn.
It was going on for 3 weeks and all my hopes were based on that.

So I'm an intern at a small company for a duration of 2 months. Not a lot of work is allotted to me right now. Every evening I have this weird feeling when I have to leave, cuz practically based on the work I could have left after lunch but I've got to stay here and wait till enough people or just someone leaves to make it seem okay.10

Super awesome day today.
1. Got up early to do a risky production deploy and it worked!
2. Three PRs approved before lunch.
3. Got some time to continue learning scala.
4. Coffee and cupcakes with some refugees and discussed work as a software engineer.
5. Tried virtual reality for the first time. Really fun.
6. Helped prepare our goals for this quarter and present them to the department.
7. Department meeting had free local craft beer and pretzels.
8. Went bouldering after work and flashed a 6c.
9. Curled up with my wife watching Netflix.
I really love my life sometimes.5 -
I am scared... I'm scared because the code works.. but it shouldn't work I mean it's not supposed to get triggered and I have no idea what triggers it. It feels like my program got cursed and started doing things on it's own. I even put up blocks to stop the function from triggering but it still works... It always works.. I am scared...7

Finally had a weekend to myself to work on some projects. I got my hands on a Sonoff switch. Did a manual flash of some new firmware and got it setup on my crappy old washer to do a little DIY smart home upgrade.

Had the best day at work today.
This summer I got to do a little work at the company my dad works. (typically cleaning and updating some machines. Stuff that the others don't have time for. Pretty boring)
Suddenly I get asked
"Have you ever developed for windows?"
I have only worked with Linux or Mac/ios (python and swift) so I told him I hadn't , but I could try.
Next thing I am making a system check program in c# (had to learn it on the fly) and I get paid to do it! I GOT FUCKING PAID TO PROGRAM! I don't have any education or whatsoever (only 17years old) but I got paid to do what I love😍😍😍
I am so excited to go to work tomorrow!1 -
A while back we had some time sensitive work I was doing in overtime, the work was purely functional and the front end had not yet been done. It went to QA to test the functionality and the only feedback I got was UX oriented.
I tried to explain on 3 occasions that the looks was not important in the slightest at this stage, and just try to break it. I then got a lecture that it wasn't an optimised layout and was shown the AA route finder as an example of how the tester thought it should look.1 -
Ah, my brain, MY FUCKING BRAIN!
Got some work from the previous company. Need to update some stuff on their website.
Fine, got the files from the server via sFTP.
Made the changes, before uploading the files, wanted to create the latest backup.
Downloaded the files again, just to realize that I forgot to cd into a different directory before re-downloading the files. All the changes are now overwritten.
Half an hour of work lost. DAMN IT!3 -

I got an extremely hard task in the morning, I asked for some clarification and I got them at 13.23.
Boss ask for updates at 13.45 (during lunch pause).
I work on it 2 hours like never before, he calls me and I said I can manage to finish in half an hour + testing.
I work more 10-15 minutes, time is around 16.15.
2 other enormous bugs shows up on the same project, boss ask me to take care of them, and I manage in only 2h to look up something like 40 web pages and correct each of them, write reports and inform the affected people. After it I work more 15 minutes to report and finish small tasks. Ended up working almost 1h more on a non paid extra time working contract.
In the morning, while my boss was aware I spent that time

Seriously, fuck sports fans. Imagine having to relate every conceivable concept through a scenario in sport to understand it.
"How does that work?"
"Okay, so imagine you've got this team, right..."2 -
It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:
I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!
The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)3 -
GWT.
Let me explain:
Tl;dr : someone fucked up, I took shit, it was a gwt project. In a sense I don't hate GWT because of the framework itself but because how I was introduced and forced to "work" with it.
Context:
Was working as a paid intern at a small company there were 3 devs 2 interns and one senior employee that only worked from home handling the shit ton of legacy VB6 code he wrote over several year and a boss with no technical knowledge. (Other unimportant people as well)
I was working with their DBA (cool dude) because I was writing statistic and report generating software.
Story:
The other intern was tasked of doing a gwt app that was supposed to use a input file.
Rather than asking the user to upload it with a file picker (I guess they exist in gwt I didn't got to dig in the framework) he was trying to load the file with a http request directed at the same host the app was running on.
It did not work.
Then his contract was other and the app was left in an unfinished state.
The boss then tried to have the app deployed, the remaining dev dodged the bullet invoking some bullshit because he was clearly incapable of doing it.
So it fell on me, couldn't deploy the app because it was not even close to working.
Tried to fix things and make it work.
Turns out he thought it would take me 3h to deploy when I clearly explained that the other guy didn't finish the app.
Boss got mad, threatened to ruin my studies and my future career.
Couldn't because my uni had my back.
Didn't want to see me anymore.
Couldn't break my contract.
Told me to work from home for the end of my internship.
I got 3 weeks early vacation and got paid, fuck him, fuck GWT, fuck his company.
Still got well marked for the internship as my supervisor was the DBA who was happy with my work.
Morality:
Don't let your intern unsupervised, don't let your main dev work from home when you don't know shit, don't piss me off and send me work from home. -
Gave a recommendation to the boss to do a thing. He said “Go and do the thing.” I wanted to do a proof of concept but there was no time. We got the contract. I tried to do the thing. It didn’t work. It WON’T work because the vendor’s marketing far overpromises what the product can do. No way to back down because the client is already fully invested in the solution. I want to quit my job AND my career now because I apparently suck at all of it.1

Years ago when I was younger than currently I got this first summer job as help in IT departament to answer calls from distressed workers.
Once this lady calls that "her monitor went black" and she cannot work, so I have to get her a replacement. They got only this big heavy CRT monitors as replacements so I had to drag it to 4th floor (no elevator) from basement.
As I reached her it turned out that her monitor is fine, only the wallpaper was changed to black, that what she was meaning :p
Well, at least I got some exercise back then.1 -
Way back, 20 or so years ago, when I went to the university, every student got an account so that we could work with the Unix machines. Every user got the same default password, -apollo-, still remember it until today, and one day I felt a little bit evil and I tried to login to the administrator account, of course the first password I tried was the default password and it worked!!! I got super scared and told an older student about it, who was brave enough to scare the administrators a little bit by leaving a message like "you have been hacked!!!" or something similar. I was just too scared to do anything about it. All I wanted to do was see IF I could login ☺️ my few minutes of being Mr. Robot... Guess hacking was not for me 😃

[UPDATE] on my newly joined internship
Considering how corporate the organisation is, I'm surprised how chill everyone is. My team consists of mostly millennials, which is great!
Everyone is super helpful, I honestly thought it'd be shitty experience joining in and it'd all be so formal but none!
First few days I got no work, so I went and asked my mentor and he just laughed and said go home, watch Netflix, which I definitely didn't expected cause corporates
I got web testing work twice (sad I didn't get more, but in time it will increase), got some research work currently which is cool too.
Honestly, I wasn't excited to join as I didn't know what kinda work would I even get(it was pretty vague) but I'm glad I got this.
I'll continue to update here, and sorry I couldn't update any sooner
Cheers my dudes5 -

Why does Linux Bluetooth audio not work properly!!!!
I have been using Linux on my laptop (moving from macOS). I got so used to Linux, and I love it so much at this point, but I really wanna use my Bluetooth speakers (subwoofer ❤️❤️).

I once got something weird during interview. I had to do an assignment on site taking the whole work day of time. In the end, I got bashed on how much I delivered and had to defend it. Defending was easy: the project was decent while not being much. A Mercedes without electric windows. I just told them it's what I prefer.
Later got a phone call and got hired.
The social test was the hardest -
Someone gave me his code and told me to improve it and being the nice guy I am I agreed. Then while trying to work on that, a dozen other people asked me to help them with their code too, so in the end I barely got any work done.

Can somebody stand behind me with a taser and tase me when I'm not productive.
I have been trying everything but can't get myself to get any work done. Which is stressing me out making it even harder to concentrate.
So I'm hoping the fear of being tasered can scare me into productivity.
The feeling of wanting to work but not being able to is one of the most annoying frustrating feelings in the world. And it's slowly destroying my business.
So anyone got some ideas, I just need to get like a week of work done. But been trying now for 2 months and got like a day of work done.
And has anyone build a fun to do list app yet that is complity gamified maybe I can trick myself in doing more.23 -

Got a promotion and had a loose definition of what my new tasks were. I got overwhelmed with being the go-to for project and account managers, and 75% of our devs, on top of my own work I had to complete for clients.
Eventually I wrote up a 2 page document of things I had to deal with daily/weekly and how I don't have time to do my work, so why should I even bother to do it.
We got it resolved, my boss took some of the tasks off my plate (like training the new hires) and allows me to work from home whenever I need to finish up work.1 -
Stories from a Startup #2

I was at university, and I didn't really feel like I was understanding C++ or C#, I'd gotten to my final year through two repeated years, skipping the work experience, practicing as often as I could (even if it wasn't making sense).
In my final year after needing to install windows for the sixth time in a month (sometimes my machine, sometimes friends machines) I got sick of having to install the same utilities over and over again.
So I decided to write a tool to download and install them, also keeping them up to date, I did it in python, teaching myself as I went and it became my final year project! I should have scored 85% but I was marked down for going over the word count.
Apparently I work better on my own and when I've got a problem I need to solve!2 -
So I got some new methods to call, when I tried to call them the usual way, it didn't work quite well.
Surprised, I asked the coder of them.

Last year I wrote a sudoku program which did solve easy sudokus but messed up on harder ones. I had got bored after a bit and forgot about it until today I thought I'd rewrite it using new stuff I've learned since and make it work properly.
So I opened it up and look and I'm like 'WHAT!?' because I don't understand what I wrote. After a bit I start to get the idea and see that it was kind of smart even if long and complicated.
If anything, it shows how much my documentation skills have improved.

The feeling of dread as still a semi-junior sysadmin when an app doesn't work after an update.
I got stressed, triple-checked everything that I changed and that I followed all steps of the documentation of the upgrade process, then, as a last step before going over in half-panic mode to my boss, I try to restart the stupid java app and it starts working.
Wtf. Why. Why didn't it work the first time I started it? D: -
We've had a project we knew was going to happen since February, and every 2-3 weeks we have been requesting feature requirements and gear to work on (hardware for test automation).
1 month ago we got the official request. 2 weeks ago sales said no to ordering equipment. Sales is now asking for weekly progress updates.
My boss said we have documentation of our asking and the group director (bosses' boss) is behind us saying, "work to make it function, not to get it done quickly."

I had to create an account on a website. I used LastPass to generate a strong password. I entered it and got the following message:
"Password must be between 8 and 16 characters and must have special characters (? , ! & #) and numbers"
My password was 20 characters, me annoyed to generate a 16 character password. Filled it in and got the same error. That was it for me.
Who dafuq limits a password to 16 characters, that's fucking nothing. It did not accept all special characters, only the ones that were showed (like 5 or so).
And here comes the worst part...
It's a bank website! I had to create the most most most insecure password in history for it to work.7 -

I saved my uni work onto a floppy disk (2001) and walked a mile into university library to print it. When I got there and put it into the computer it had corrupted and the disk was unreadable! Luckily I had a back up on my computer so had to walk the mile back, saved again onto two different floppy disks this time and walked the mile back. This time I managed to print it and deliver the work 5 minutes before the deadline.

Guess what.
When you take a photo with the phone oriented vertically, it takes an horizontal photo.

The coffee at my work sucks! :(
Recently, the coffee machine was broken and a better one was installed until the other one got fixed. It made decent coffee, but now we're back to drinking piss. Teasing!2 -
I... I just got on the bus to work and left my beautiful contigo coffee thermos at the stop. I'm done guys. I'm not going to make it.. ..1

Finally got my "new" keyboard! Had to use one of these at work for few months and I loved it. It has that classic tactile, clicky feel. I almost got an expensive mechanical one, but I'm glad I didn't.6

Anyone else working on projects to remove flash from their projects? Anyone not going to get it done in time? What are your work arounds?
Just got placed on a project to help remove flash from a proj and there's no way this is going to get done. I looked up when they announced deprecation and that was in 2017.
I find it laughable the company waited to the last minute to do this. Obviously they didn't deem this important enough to do ahead of time so I see no reason to work OT for someone else's poor planning.7 -
Not weird but f*cking annoying co-worker. Everything that sets people off he did. Also he never learn stuff like personal hygiene and stuff. One time my boss had to tell him to go home and not return to work until he took a shower. Also had didn't seem to have any work ethic at all and that got me fuming angry at him as he refused to do any work at all. When I was working in his apartment and got stuff to do he normally did and had way more experience in than me his coworkers were astounished how "fast" I worked when in realitiy I was taking it really easy. And this dickhead managed to make his stuff and then use the other time to play games ore whatever. In the end no one in the IT apartment wanted him to work there anymore. And he even managed to offend and insult our boss so much that he had to call him Mr. instead of his name. My co-workers even collected money for him to come to work looking like a human being and taking care of himself. I'm so glad I am no longer required to talk to or even work with this moron ever again

Got a mac to use for work, and to be honest, I never thought that I would say this... I kind of like it.. The gripe I have with mac's is that it's not user upgradable having the ssd and ram soldered on. If this weren't the case I would probably buy one myself6

Android Java came a long way since I've stopped programming for it 5 years ago. Now you've got nice dependency injection, storage helpers and good hybrid solutions. So, curious as I am, I asked to work on some bug fixes in the Android application at work. Bad choice.
"Welcome back!" said the nullpointers, "We've missed you!"2 -

I was so tired of work last week and weather was so good I ended up in a bar.
People were so nice there so I got there second day in a row.
I met new nice people and cute female bartender who laughed from my jokes.
Was to drunk and tried so much to make her laugh that l forgot to get her number.
Got there next day asked bartender for her shifts, turned out it was last day of her work, she moved out from city for at least a year. So I got drunk again, and so on 5 days in a row.
Well that’s my life. Lucky me... again.
Karma is so funny I can’t laugh for some time anymore. -
I just finished this app I was working on, an app which I was supposed to be working on with a friend who never committed. It pisses me off that he didn't put in any input. We were supposed to work on different parts of the app. I had everything planned out, on how to make a certain function. But right now I'm just happy because I have no idea how I got it to work without the functions and at this stage I don't wanna check ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1

Best feeling I've felt all week: Even though I don't have time today to install it, I got Wi-Fi on the minimal install ISO of Gentoo to work with almost no configuration. My shitty ass dongles actually work???

Convinced someone to start using ubuntu. Now we spent 25 mins getting mySQL and workbench to work. He was getting pretty frustrated, but then we got it working and he was so happy about it.
Now he knows.

Just got hired as a programmer. Still currently moving to the new city. I got a freshly installed windows PC to work with. Didnt finish some stuff on friday have to finish it today (monday) until 12 a.m. had to wake up at 4 am to get to the train so I could be at work on time (10 am). I arrived at work and turned the PC on, and now im sitting here and wait for Windows Update to finish. Its at 8% after 20 minutes.
(I actually like windows but) Man this sucks.3 -
Someone at my work actually got a rubber duck and him talking to this duck (himself) is really annoying at one point someone got over there and solved problem for him lol seriously, who actually says it out loud?3

Holiday in 6 days, wohoo. 3weeks in Thailand. So ready for it.
Currently working on a huge real estate website. Design got approved yesterday, yesterday I finally got partial access to the clients real estate data. Where the data is uploaded to our server as zip files containing a xml file and files attached to it.
Deadline is tomorrow, but has been pushed back 2-3 weeks, which sucks as I probably have to work whilst on vacation4 -

I love to work on my machine, and being it
my work-horse for school and side-projects, I have a neat dualboot of Windows 10 and (driver-related) Ubuntu Mate.
Ditched Mate because screen tearing, got Cinnamon, but I have to say, that W10 UI appeals a lot for me, so... what kind of Windows is this?4 -
Got an invite for Google foobar challenge.
Successful completed 2 challenges.
It is so much fun to work on complex problem especially with a time bomb attached to it. -
Not in a row but had to work 13h per days for 5 days in a row because of a huge ass integration I had to do before it was too late.
Made it, everyone was happy, was promised a bonus, never got it. Nice.1 -
Fucking finally got xkb and xcb to work after hours of bullshit
Why is it so fucking hard getting a damn keyboard layout on linux 😭11 -
Once I had a stupid idea, on a Wednesday, started coding, found the buzz, found the booze, got in the groove, realized that it was 7am and had to to work 😭
At least I was almost done, but damn that was a long Thursday -
Working full time and going back to college......
I got my full time gig in January. This semester I decided to go back for my bachelor's because I only got my associates degree. Honestly balancing the homework and work isnt that bad. It's trying to get ANYTHING ELSE done....like getting and oil change, going to the dentist, etc. I have to use paid time off for all of it now. :(2 -
TL;DR: work at the reference hospitals, we got precautions, no panic, we got this.
Well, currently my client is one of the reference hospitals in belgium in regards to coronavirus so they receive a lot of the infected patients. Although the general public is 'uneasy' to put it mildly, the IT department is not scared. We take our precautions, we already have safe working distances from each other. If the federal minister of health announces it, all non-medical or non-essential employees from the hospital will be either put on leave or work remote. Bottom line is: no panic. we got this! -
While driving home from work.
Then I have two choices either fix it when I get home or remember to fix it the next day, which I then have to think very hard to remember what the solution was.
Should have fixed it when I got home ... 😫1 -

spent all day finishing up a feature that i did not want to do at all and think its not the time for it...
after 5 hours of coding & debugging i finally made the PR, took the rest of the day off, felt happy i got rid of that task along with the nagging of the PM. life was good.
At 8 PM, some test i never heard of failed, my branch was the issue and it got reverted and now ill have to work on it again on Monday to fix it. fuck my life. -
Finally got powerline working in tmux on my iMac. I found some obscure issue where there's an async problem occasionally on mac where you have to reload the daemon and config manually for it to work. Two days of fighting with this but it finally worked! It's a Christmas miracle!

I got the responsibility for a project using Google App Engine the first time.
It is exciting to use the whole work day learning new stuff and read the documentation of a service you never worked with :] -
When you do the drag and remove of the react-native app on the phone and realise on the next build it doesnt work because i need to remove app from settings because it got disabled
Its Friday, i spent less time that younger me would have finding that. I consider it a successful debug session. -
It was a shit idea to try and get async to work in my first ever real programm meant to be used in production.
Unit tests are a bitch to make.
And now everything just kinda falls down on its own.
At least i learned a ton and got a lot of firsts out of the way.1 -

So my first computer... My dad got a Laptop somewhere around 96-97 for work as he had to travel a lot abroad. He also used to take work home and work there in the evening or on weekends. I kindof asked if I could play with it and he just opened defragmenting and I loved the animation. At least I think it had some animation. I know another computer I got later had it. However like the second or third time he left me alone with it, I decided to find something else and somehow managed to instead of defragment the hd, format it. Or atleast delete like a few folders on it. However that game was "lame", so I went out to play with a friend, as the computer wouldn't respond after some time. I've never seen him as angry as when I got home.
Long story short, me and my brother soon got our own computer, like a really " old" one the company where my aunt worked sold. It didn't had a cd rom drive, just a 3.5 and a bigger drive. My dad later took the big tape out and replaced it with a cd rom drive. It ran win95 I think. And we later upgraded it to 981 -
I'd like to Dockerize our Node.js webapp at work, though I've never worked with any form of containerization software. Has anyone got any good resources for learning it? Should I also be learning Kubernetes?10

Windows just got a BSOD and had the classic "please wait while we collect error info, we will restart for you shortly".
When it reached 100% it actually restarted itself and I litturally said "woah" out loud, thats litturally a first for me. It normally just hangs on 100% for about 15 mins before I just power it off manually.
It sucks that I lost my work, but atleast I got to witness such a rare event.4 -
Finally got Stripe charges to work, then changed it to make subscriptions work in the Django app I was working on for Capstones. At least in theory. Works locally, but hasn’t been merged into our Production branch yet, so there could be something missing.
Still, super happy to have finally crossed it off my mental to-do list. -
Don't think anyone's posted anything like this yet but if they have I haven't seen it. Where do you see DevRant in the future? I'd like to see a forum or something, maybe allowing people to showcase work or get support on projects. Anyone got thoughts on DevRants future or community? I like it so far everyone's nice.12

Kettle switch has stopped working (i.e. it needs to be held down to make it work). But that got me thinking, I could get a pi zero, attach it to a relay, serve up an interface that allows me to select amount of water and temperature, glue the button on and I have my very own smart kettle.
People here love IoT right?12 -
Proud to say 19 hours straight.
My uni has a infamous course work assignment which took about 27 hours to train on the lab PCs.
The issue was we only had a week to do it. So you had to code it, then run it and make it run first time to have a good time.
As we all know, that’s not realistic and I remember staying up the entire time to make sure I had sufficient time to train it. Was a nightmare but got a good grade.2 -
So for a project we needed some last minute changes to make it work (friday eve).
So at 10pm after I got home from the bar i started coding. I got in a flow opened up another bottle of rum and went berserk on the last feature with refactors.
The monday when i entered the office i got a intervention about my drunken code habit.
Apparently its not a good thing to just bash on someones code in the comments....1 -

So, this is a story of an experience a friend of mine had with Android Studio.
As part of our semester, we are required to make an application through Android Studio, and had no previous experience with it. We started to download and install it all which were a nightmare on its own to make it work.
While i got it to work in the end, she encounterred a big issue. Her pc was named after her name, which contained letters android studio did not understand (æ,ø,å) and made it absolutely useless.
After installing and uninstalling multiple times, she ended up making and entire new user called "F#ck Android Studio" just to make it work.
No idea if there was an easier way, but damn its been hell for her4 -
I hate Microsoft.
I got my new laptop from work today. Pretty nice, 4 cores, 8 threads, an SSD.
It also came with the upgrade to Windows 10.
I work quite a lot on virtual machines, so my work laptop ends being an email and RDP client.
So, I connect to my usual VM, open up vscode and begin working.
But I quickly realize, that for some reason I can't do the Ctrl+Alt+DownArrow combination anymore, even though it worked on my old win7 machine.
Turns out that these keys are reserved, and I have absolutely no way to work around this.
I have to stop using a keyboard shortcut, that I use every few minutes.
Thanks for nothing.17 -

Got the update to Android Oreo on my S7 edge yesterday.
I love it. It made my phone work so much faster(really, so much!). Everything is smoother and new cool featured have been added, the UI looks incredybly modern and nice.
But there is one BIG disadvantage.
The batteryusage is terrible now. In bad times my phone lost 7%-8% in a half an our. I heard that they had the same issue when the s8 got the update to android oreo.
Pls samsung you are my favourite phone company. Fix it, it is driving me crazy!!!1 -
Don't know why but I prefer to work/code on linux. It pissed me off when we had to work on windows on java and C labs on uni. On first data bases lab we got linux machines and the first thing we did was starting windows VMs...

So one of my co-workers had issues with his MKP 2010, it wasn't booting up, wasn't charging, basically acting as a brick. He went everywhere around the office asking other to revive it. I was the last person - my duty was to take out the hard drive and trash it.
I asked him if I can keep it, he allowed me to do so.
After a couple of days I got back to it, installed a hard drive, which I had from my friend from a while ago.
- Played around with charger, got it charging
- Boot it up to recovery mode (I was very excited when I saw that globe spinning)
- The Wi-Fi didn't connect, used LAN
- Formatted drive, installed OS
- Got to endless loop of recovery mode
- Found out that the digits on the keyboard type lower line of letters.. :/
- Boot to safe mode - worked
- Endlessly booted to recovery mode as I tried to get to boot menu
- Realized that the left Shift, Control, and Option does not work
- Used external keyboard and got to boot menu
- Still no success with booting to regular mode
- NVRAM reset!!!!
- Booya! It works!
Should I bother and replace the keyboard? I mean it doesn't matter that much, probably will give it to my mother :)1 -
Is a masters in statistics worth it?
A bit of background:
I got my bachelor in actuarial math (statistics for insurance risk), then found machine learning and got a couple of gigs in software development and data engineering. I became my previous employers the go to guy for questions about data integrity and structure.
Now I am heading to a new job that specializes in ML for gambling. And while I love the math, I really see myself doing more software development and system architecture work (with some analysis). I already started this masters program, so I got less than a year to finish, but starting to feel like its a waste of my time, but also, I dont want to just quit it. -
Got a new work laptop yesterday. Set it up, updated it, and went to bed. I woke up this morning to it not accepting my password. I had to blow it away in recovery and delete my old keychain. Great start to the morning.

Exercise app got it all planned out in my head (well sort of). All day at work I'll be getting ideas on how id make it.
Day ends and I feel motivated to work on it all the way home. Get in make a cup of tea boot pc create a project do initial commit to git.
And nothing. Motivation dead ability to think gone. So I'll sit there sipping my tea trying to get motivated.
Eventually I'll close it down and get motivation to start it again at 4am which isn't an ideal time to start a project. -
Got mixed feelings about dart/flutter 😕
On one hand, I find it very easy to work with and very fast for prototyping. Everything is smooth once you compile it.
On the other hand, I keep running into weird as shit bugs and missing functionality. The bugs are primarily related to iOS, so that might not entirely be their fault. Last one required me to delete the entire project and rebuild it, the clean command didn't work shit.
It's quite annoying that so many features are missing, but I guess that's life, when you try to work with a multi platform language...1 -
Had to organize a ride for him to get to the company's Christmas party. He like expected it of me, when I said I don't care how he got there, as I wouldn't drive, since I was planning on drinking he was super pissed at me.

My first computer was an old Pentium 2 running windows 98 with no internet and just a CD Rom and Floppy Drive. Got it for my 7th Birthday I think and immediately wanted to make it do my biding.
Didn't work out. Had no clue what the words on screen meant and batch scripts looked like sorcery to me.
Hell even the options menu in German was a cryptic puzzle to me.
Got a little better in the meantime. -

Around 24 hours. Over 48 hours!
It's was in high school, I had a job in grocery store stucking up shelfs. I had two shifts that weekend. it's was Saturday I had just finished working a 13 hours shifts and my mates was pressuring me to join for video games and drinking.
Ofc I went there, got super drunk (beer pong and drinking league of legends).
It got really late(around 4am) and I knew I was supposed to be at work at 6 pm, so I call dad told him to drive me home and then to work! He did as awesome as he is!
Had to work 12 hours, I did 11 hours then my boss send me home.I was basically til at bit drink then I arrived I work for 4 hours I had the worst hangover the last 7 hours of work.
When I came we had guest and I had to be present!
Poor life decision, no regrets! -

I got a SIM card activated for my dad yesterday. Here in SA you need to verify your identity to get the card activated. But the company's systems were offline yesterday while I got it from another distributor of theirs 2 shops over. Now a day later they tell me I have to go and get another one because the one I got won't be activated because of it being offline. Something about it being assigned to me while it is offline makes it not work.

I think today might be the day I'll bring ubuntu onto my big laptop. It had only windows for many years now and I did all my dev work on my smaller laptop that I carry around with me. It's going to be a pain to setup everything though, although I got rid of the part that was making the setup really painful. We'll see.

It was early 2000s and I put together a personalized shopping concierge site. My wife was amazing at finding deals, coupons, obscure products, etc. And in those days you had to work hard to find them. Been put on a personal action plan because I'm not finishing my work fast enough. Work that the team lead dumped on me because he claims to have no time for it. But -I- am going to have my bonus pulled by the boss if I don't finish it by the end of the month. This is ridiculously unfair. Good thing I got a job interview next week at another company. Sooner I get out of here the better. I'm so angry over this unfair bullshit.

So I work in a school as a network manager and general admin, but it is commonly known I am a programmer too. Anywho, I got asked by a member of staff to find a way to add all teachers to the classrooms (we use Google classroom) and I wrote down what he asked. I spent my evening at home working on it and got it 50% done and finished at work the next day. This member of staff comes in and was happy, so I read back what he asked me for and he turns around and says "Oh, I wanted you to add all classrooms to one account, didn't I say that" I tried to explain he didn't but he chocked it up to me not listening. I even showed him the piece of paper on which I wrote down what he wanted but no, it turned into a shouting match and I told him to leave. I finished the script but I'm wondering if I should actually give it to him. What's your thoughts?6

Yes. I'm gonna get back to work now. -
iPhone 6S got salt water damage. Turns out its the screen so replaced it. Original touch ID doesn't work so that's gone. Now I'm waiting for front camera, sensor, and speaker to arrive to fix that.7

After exchanging punches with laradock and docker yesterday, I was able to to find a middle ground, it promised to work and I said I would not annihilate it from my machine.
Pretty handy once it works, got now quite some docker-compose commands beaten into me, because of how many times I've up'd and down'd after re-building with different configs. -
I remember some years ago a phone call between my boss and a customer.
The customer wanted a website from us, and my boss told him what it would aproximately cost (it wasn't very much).
Customer got upset and said "How can it be so expensive? You're not saving lifes, are you?"
It never came to a contract, and I now work at a real company ...2 -
Databases and LDAP down since 1 1/2 days...so embarrassing...am i really working in an it company???
luckily there are options beside work...hello amazon, spotify, devrant...:D
if we got Server/DB issues it always takes about at least half a day to fix it! *facepalm*1 -
Discus always before how much ur client have to pay! Worked round 3hrs each day on a range of 6 weeks (6d each week) on a gameproject. After i did my work i requested my money - all i got were 50€! Just fifty fucking euros for so many time! Good that the retards never got it launched because my client (is even a dev) never finished his work or whatever.
PS: Didnt got paid in BTC 🤐
PPS: it was about 2,5yrs ago 😎 -
So. Spent most of the morning furiously trying to work out why I wasn't getting a reasonable response from my Rest Service "RS", calling it from some other system. Only got something vague along the lines of "value must not be null". Both systems are set up on my local machine, IIS bindings set up all correct and URLs and authentication settings double and triple checked. I was doing a lot of work on RS six months ago so it just had to be set up right.
Forgot I got a new machine a couple of months ago and never built the WS .dlls. -_- -
Worst dev experience of 2016: compiling and including SDL and SDL2 into C projects, never got it to run all the functions, sometimes wouldnt compile, etc... Never got it to work properly in the end...3

I got the question about the ownership of the technology.
I understand If I develop my own technology outside of company work hour and without using company resource,I own the technology. Let call this technology "X".
If the company want me to work on "X" during company hour with company resource to profit off it, do I still own "X"?11 -
Been using a *nix since about 2004, but becoming very weary of the OS wars. Man it's all the same shit: if you got to dig through the mud of undocumented Exchange API whose support will then be dropped or if you have to support eight different Samba VFS versions with all their gratuitous name changes.
It's all a fucking mess! But someone's got to roll up one's sleeves and get that shit to work.
And then there will always be the next guy cursing your name, because you got it to work and now he has to add some feature to this abomination. -
I hate my internet provider.
I configure everything to work remotely and when I try to login to it I got "Http Status 502".
I thought I misconfigure something and recheck everything and still got "Http Status 502".
When I use the internet connection provided by different provider, it works!
Everything is hard to debug without you messing it up internet provider. It like trying to debug the code and find out the problem is in compiler.8 -
just 'Hello world' me trying to make a restful api.
*Got Ktor, loved the koltin, hated the deploy, quit.
*Got Django, loved the python, hated the sql migration, quit.
*Got Node, loved everything, hated mongo, can't quit now...
*Got Firebase DB now, I feel the hate monster...ghostly voices, saying, Work my slave, build it... dont stop, 'cause we're right behind you...
....and we're waiting for you5 -
reactjs project i got to work on has one "main" component and "modals" components referenced in it, that's it, one parent with many children. parent has nearly 1000 lines of code, child on average is nearly 500!
Let's talk about components! LOL :'/2 -
Good Experience -
1.)Became proficient in Web development!
2.)Wanted to learn it for a very long time but didn't know where to start, but this year got opportunities to work on some good projects!
3.)Also got to lead a awesome team of good developers in my college!
4.) Got to work on a awsome internship with a very nice employer :)
5.) Became a Devrant Supporter :D
Bad Experience -
1.) Had to face shit ass seniors who blamed me and my team all the time for their inefficiencies.
2.) Team had developed many good projects in android and web for the college, but the stupid seniors failed to implement them,it was a big mood!
3.) I had planned to learn ML and improve my competitive coding and also finish my game, but failed to do so :(.
Hopefully 2018 will be productive:)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
So in my groups project where we use ASP.NET Core MVC where we've needed to add identity. Now I've struggled with this soooo much only for today to get it to work.
The documentation for it (more specifically user roles) isn't very good, and most tutorials basically just do the same thing which has for me thrown exceptions left and right (and I don't even do anything special tbh) without any explanations. But today I finally got it to work, I can seed the database without getting told that there are no service for the RoleManager
and
it
feels
like
this
https://youtube.com/watch/...rant it literally feels like hardbass asp.net core mvc now it does dopamine levels high aaaaaaaaa it didn't work askjdfhasdjh1 -

Why can't you just do what I say... I don't need ur opinion on points that I specifically stated should be done a certain way....
I don't want to spend 30mins arguing with you... I already got enough work as it is and ur supposed to be helping me...
I don't have time to explain everything to you... Just what I need you to do....
There's a reason I got promoted and you didn't...4 -
I've got to make hololens gallery in Unity as a test for a new job. I've spent half of yesterday trying to make it work. I managed to build the scene, but failed at making it work in emulator. I'm trying to run it using VS2019, but project needs Windows Mobile SDK. I think I've installed everything I could find and could have been installed. I tried removing this manually and launching but obviously it didn't work.
Has anyone played with Hololens?5 -
So I'm a windows person through and through.. I used them at school college and university, but
I've heard a lot about Linux and unbuntu and it's got me a little curious Now the question I'm asking is can someone eli5 what unbuntu is? is it free to use? how hard is it to install? How hard is it to use? What is it good for? work/games/music?4 -
Year 2012, me junior wanting C++ work. Got free internship at age 27 at that company. Did some minor C++ work. Collegue rejected me for work on very interesting C++ project. Yesterday, eight years later, he and I in different company he calls me and asks me to do C++ work, even arranges time for me to read Effective C++. In these eight years I did iOS Android and got pretty fed up with it. Yaaay bitch :)

Just updated my OP2 to the 3.0.2 through the bootloader, because it wasn't capable of installing it through the OS... I guess that was because I was running the Beta.
When it was done I got the lovely option of "Reboot" or "Yes". I pressed Yes, which sent me to the menu.... ? Well then the reboot option in this menu might work? Got "Reboot" or "No"... I guess someone forgot the meaning of yes and no :P (forgot to take a picture :() -
I just got a U2F key, and I have an extension for Firefox for it to work on that browser. When I try to set it up in my Google account it wants me to use Chrome. Now why the fuck can't they check for the functionality instead of what browser I'm using?

I got an idea about my at-job project and I wanted to try it out at home. First, I need to set up my environment.... 20 minutes later maven is still downloading dependencies. Size of ~/.m2 > 1G. So much for unpaid voluntary work.

I like investigating hypothetical and unlikely future scenarios, so here it goes:
Let's say you are studying CS(BSc.) and you got an offer at google(or another FAANG company). Would you drop out to work for them? Why/why not?7 -
Any one remember me talking about Covey (have a look at my rants from about 5 months ago)?
Well, it's finally (somewhat) usable!

For those who are wondering why it took so long, work (I got a job!) and some bugs in a core dependency of plugin system got in the way. I actually have to take a break right around now, for about 3 weeks to work on a project that has a deadline. But after that it should be smooth sailing to a proper alpha release!
You'll need to install upx for the build, and postgres for the actual function, and you want a few VMs to act as nodes, but have fun! -
Got a bit of work done today, not the most but a lot more than I usually have been doing which is good.
I changed my theme from the default of VS Code (I do like it) back to my main squeeze Monokai, and it for some reason helped me focus more. Idk -
senior: it should only take 30 seconds to replace multiple display strings across our code base
well it would be nice if they'd do it then, and somehow i don't think that 30 seconds included checking your work and making sure you don't fuck up other instances of those strings (e.g. in variable names, etc)
maybe you got a clever enough regex to only hit exactly what you want :shrug:1 -
I got a task to work on during sprint planning on Monday. Felt the task was a 2hour task and procrastinated to do it on Tuesday. Tuesday came and I pushed it to Wednesday.
Today is Friday and I'm just realizing the task is a microservice on it's own. FML1 -

none of the food delivery apps coupons ever seem to work... Even the ones that popup when app starts...
Is there some trick to it that I'm missing?
Got one for 20% off but at checkout said was invalid ...
Are there ever any coupons that actually work?3 -
About a year ago, I wanted to work as a software tester. But after the courses, everything got bogged down. And now I consider myself as stupid as possible to get into this field. What the hell to do with it?

I have been taking Udacity frontend web courses and got to the react projects. Trying to get Google maps and react to work together has been a nightmare. The Google docs have you put a script tag in the HTML but react puts the HTML in the JavaScript and it is very confusing.

my former client didn't pay me my three weeks salary, I don't know if I deserve it. I got kind of distracted from the past two weeks because I just moved in to a new house and the following week I got sick and got positive of covid, they didn't ask for my time log and I didn't give it, because I was shy I was not able to work that much. I decided to resign because the stress I'm getting from work is starting to affect my health too much physically and mentally. Now, that client didn't pay me my three weeks salary I asked several times and I didn't get any response. Did I deserve that? To not get paid because because I was not able to work that much and I suddenly just resigned? I'm paid hourly, I extended my stay for a week in good faith but still my client didn't bother to pay me... instead of getting more stress from that I decided to move on. But still, it hurts me to think I've spent hours working on a job that would turn out to be free.1

That moment, when you got something to work as you want and are happy about what you did, just to break the whole system a few minutes later and can't figure out how it broke... love it
