I worked in the same building as another division in my organization, and they found out I had created a website for my group. They said, “We have this database that was never finished. Do you think you could fix it?”

I asked, “What was it developed in?”
He replied, “Well what do you know?”
I said, “LAMP stack: PHP, MySQL, etc.” [this was over a decade ago]

He excitedly exclaimed, “Yeah, that’s it! It’s that S-Q-L stuff.”

I’m a little nervous at this point but I was younger than 20 with no degree, entirely self-taught from a book, and figured I’d check it out - no actual job offer here yet or anything.

They logged me on to a Windows 2000 Server and I become aware it’s a web application written in VB / ASP.NET 2.0 with a SQL Server backend. But most of the fixes they wanted were aesthetic (spelling errors in aspx pages, etc.) so I proceeded to fix those. They hired me on the spot and asked when I could start. I was a wizard to them and most of what they needed was quite simple (at first). I kept my mouth shut and immediately went to a bookstore after work that day and bought an ASP.NET book.

I worked there several years and ended up rewriting that app in C# and upgrading the server and ASP.NET framework, etc. It stored passwords in plaintext when I started and much more horrific stuff. It was in much better shape when I left.

That job was pivotal in my career and set the stage for me to be where I am today. I got the job because I used the word “SQL” in a sentence.

Long ago I worked for a contractor company who took over an asp.net site from another contractor company. The client said that everything ran slow and he had already updated the hardware per the 1st contractor. We checked the db calls and things ran fine; so I said "search the solution for "sleep"", it came back with Thread.Sleep(1) in several places with comments saying it was to allow the AJAX Spinner to show on the pages.
Turns out the client asked for the spinner but the hardware was so fast the 1st contractors added sleep so the client would see the spinner.

Hot take: PHP is pretty good nowadays.

I'm a Laravel dev right now and things just get done so quickly. Every language has its problems but the meme of PHP hate seems to be made more out of ignorance these days. You could find just as many problems with any other language.

For those that say I'm biased because I work through the framework more than the language, I'd ask don't you do the same? ASP.NET, Java EE, the millions of JS frameworks, all these also make your life easier within their languages.

In the end, work with what makes you happy and productive and be done with it.

Why are all my classmates building their web applications in PHP for our thesis? I know it's used a lot but for smaller projects there's tons of better ways to build a web application. Besides myself and another guy in this class (I'm using Java and mongoDB, he's working in ASP.NET and Microsoft SQL), nobody else wants to use something different. We only did PHP in one class so this seriously can't be the only language 2/3rd's the class knows.

Junior coder says validation is not needed on asp.net mvc form pages because it is not in the requirements or part of the definition of done. Wants to argue about it. Refuses to do it. Currently, I am going through a legacy application built in microsoft access back in 90s.

Last night I made my first web application available to the internet. It's an internal enterprise management system for a small non-profit.

It's running on a single $6 a month digitalocean droplet, and the domain is $12 a year, so yearly cost for them is absolutely rock bottom.

It's written in asp.net 6.0 razor pages, nginx reverse proxy, certbot for HTTPS certificates, fail2ban for ssh protection (ssh login is via ssl keys), entity framework with MySQL.

The site itself has automatic IP banning based on a few parameters like login spam, uses JWT tokens, and is fully secured.

All together, it's a lot of value for about $100 a year.

Did some updates to an older Web Forms website built by a previous SENIOR developer who is a notoriously horrible developer.

Now before I start, you have to understand this guy studied at a University and had been working for at least two years before I even started working. He is supposed to know the basic shit mentioned below.

This also happened a couple of days ago, so I have calmed down since then so I apologise for the relaxed tone. My next rant will contain a lot more swearing.

This fucking guy did the stupidest shit imaginable.

On the details view of a post|page|article|product|anything that would require a details view this jackass would load the data from the DB.

Using an OleDbConnection, OleDbDataAdapter, DataTable and the poorest writter fucking sql statements you have ever seen. All of these declared in the Page_Load method.

There was literally no reason for him to use OleDb instead of Sql, but he simply did not know any better.

He especially liked: "select * from tbl where id = " & Request("T") & ""

ZERO fucking checks to see if the value is even passed or valid, nothing. He did not even check whether the DataTable had any rows.

He then proceeded to use only the Heading column of the returned row to change the page's title.

Stupidly I assumed the aspx page will be in a better state. Fuck NO!

This fucktard went, added server tags to the opening of the asp:Content tag, copied that shit he used to fetch the data and pasted it between the server tags.

He did not know how to access the DataTable mentioned above from the aspx page!

He did this on every fucking project he worked on. Any place that required <%= %> to display data instead of using asp server controls, this cunt copied whatever was written in the code behind and pasted everything between server tags.

Fuck I could go on forever, but I think this is enough for my first rant.

One of the dumbest things I've done as a dev... I was a front-end/php guy that got hired into a asp.net company. My boss told me to take down a section of the website. I hopped on the server and started looking at files and saved a config file. 2 minutes later I had 3 devs in my office asking what I'd done that took down our entire network.

Thankfully my boss laughed it after they republished the site, but that was my intro into asp.net development.

Once upon a time, an IT major named adamyeti thought it was a good idea to work on projects directly off of a flash drive with no backup. Halfway through a large ASP.NET project, the drive failed. I fumbled through a free drive recovery tool, but all of the data was scrambled and corrupted.

Yesterday I applied for a summerjob as a Software/Webdeveloper at some companies. Today I got a call and they tell me I have the job. When I asked what kind of things I will have to do there the Recruiter didn't really know, so I accepted because fuck it.
Later I got told that somebody from the team will be calling me. So i ask that guy what I'm going to be doing and he tells me they have a old sharepoint application that they need to migrate to a new sharepoint version.

So I read up on sharepoint and find out about the languages ASP.NET supports aaaaaand it's about my least favorite language C#. (Well actually that would be Visual Basic but nevermind) We did some C# in school but I never got fond of it.
But hey learning something new ain't so bad or is it?

When I was around 13 I started programming html and designing websites on and off over the years. Later during my first year of college I picked up C++ and loved it. I always had this idea that web design was very elementary programming until recently.

I recently got forced into learning C# and ASP.NET Core MVC by my internship. Holy shit was I wrong. Web design is so insanely complex and interesting!

I'm working on this super fun project in which we can combine the newest technologies, and some not so new but fun to use, we are doing it with docker, ASP.Net core, Angular2, and suddenly the system maintenance guy from the client sends us an email like:

Now running under Oracle Linux, with Apache and MySQL.

It's not finished yet but it runs (and I'm really happy with that). I like the new direction with .NET Core, open source and cross platform :-)

I've had a personal project (commercial idea) I've been meaning to get started on for a while, and today I started...

Kudos to the team at Microsoft, they've really gotten .net core and asp.net core to a fantastic place.

And the team at JetBrains have done an amazing job on Rider.

I've been able to get a docker container running SQL Server on linux, as well as Web API projects for an API and an identity server all running with local HTTPS and communicating quite happily, with barely an issue in sight.

Bodes well for the future I hope.

Now I just have to commit to the project and actually finish it 😂

It really seems like MS is frothing at the fucking mouth to have you use IdentityServer and offers no real alternatives whatsoever besides something like Facebook or Twitter login.

You won't believe it, but y'all probably will... But I solved my problem by fixing literally one line of code.

This of course pissed me off because this problem persisted for an entire week, even my supervisor could not figure it out.

Solving a problem is sometimes just half the battle, the journey along the way counts for something.

What are your thoughts or experiences with Ruby on Rails? Does it have a bright future?
I'm currently only using PHP for server-side web stuff, but looking for ideas for more beautiful languages.
I know C#, but because 95% of web servers I work on are Linux based, it's (as far as I currently know) not an option. Or is ASP.NET Core somewhat supported on non-root (basic hosting) linux servers?

Thought I'd share another one with you. Last year I saw a turorial posted on LinkedIn about how to create a captcha in ASP.NET. The turorial itself wasn't that bad but it made me laugh so hard because the writer thought of a neat way to input the desired captcha code to the handler that generated the image. Guess how? In the query string. That totally defeats its purpose. How on earth did he come up with that. So much for securing your form submission through captcha. Of course when I commented about it he didn't reply. I hope no one actually used that tutorial.

I just fucking hate compiling this fucking C# (ASP.NET) code and then transferring to staging server. Fuck you.....no no no listen to me fuck you and fuck this shit.

Yes that is one query. I wrote the entire thing out as a string in my C# program in one go and tested it by running it from the program. Must've worked properly because I got them grades so eh. I recall I had one nested seven levels too (this is just 5) but I can't find a photo of it. These two queries did all the business logic. Yeah.

What's your experiences with Docker?

I started my career 7 years back (at the same company I am currently working) as an Asp.net developer. My company used to work in Microsoft domains back then. 5 years back one of our directors decided to dig into the open-source technologies and move away from Microsoft. And I was the first employee who was assigned to learn python. I thought about switching the company so that my 2 years of asp.net experience doesn't go waste. But I didn't as I started liking python. It was easy, powerful, clean, and same code ran on every fucking platform. And I was introduced to open-source.

Don't know best or worst, but this decision definitely changed my view about software development. I understood that money is not everything, passion is also important. The open-source community runs on passion and dedication. And I love the way it works. The bottom line is, I am happy. And python is beautiful.

Okay after reviewing all my options. There are fucking no resources I can use to teach myself ASP.NET (Core). The official docs don’t give information as to how or why you should do something, and everything else is either not the same version or there’s differences in the versions project files such as Startup.cs just as an example. So it’s very confusing to follow along with tutorials or whatever it is because I don’t know what the differences do because backend is still really new to me. And I want to know what all is happening and why.

It’s nothing against ASP.NET, ASP.NET Core just the tutorials and resources and documentation for it. Although I’m open to recommendations.

When it took 6 months to design and develop a trade show application in ASP.NET MVC 4, and suddenly - "Make the tablet-optimized version by next week". Wat??

I'm no Nodejs expert but can someone explain how in the fucking world is node_modules folder is that HUGE! on my slow ass internet it takes couple of mins to pull the repo and five mins to finish npm install! and takes so much ram to build a freaking docker container for my react website when it takes barely 300MB to build both MySQL and Asp.Net Core dockers T_T

I was doing an asset management project for the CTO of a small company in ASP.NET and the CTO decided to stick his crap smeared fingers into the development because he 'developed' a completely different AS/400 system which everyone complained was like having a dog smear it's balls all over your screen while taking a dump on your keyboard. Fucking idiot would have given me 2 weeks extra work with all the shit he broke if it wasn't for version control.

Applied for a job which would like you to have some C# knowledge. Not required though. I'm like, fine, I know Java (and I'm pretty decent at it) and I know that C# looks like Java in many areas. So, I made it clear that I didn't have any C# experience, and now they require me to do a 2 hour long "difficult" test in ASP.NET and C#... GG, the search for a new job continues.

Just started a job as a junior asp.net (coming from a somewhat long career as PHP fullstack) 1 week in and i'm doing nothing C# related, tweeking JS frameworks instead

So I'm trying out docker and see how I can make use of it, current setup:
1. Ubuntu on VM and Mac for Asp.Net core development
2. Windiws for MS only stuff like SQL Server
3. Ubuntu Server on VM and is running docker images: MS image for SQL and Ms image for dinner core.

What I did so far one script which will handle updating SQL Server database on windows with the changes done on docker SQL image
Then publish website from Mac or Ubuntu to docker image. I have yet to find a way to execute scripts remotely on a docker image using bash script from a remote

What should I do next? And for home setup go for Ubuntu server or CentOS? Any recommended packages for server administration? Workflow ..etc.?

In this semester I had a subject about system architecture. In this class, we must learn Java script, C# (and ASP.NET framework ), PHP (and Zend Framework 2), but in the classes is taught only UML and patterns. In the moodle of the subject we don't have any information about any of the languages and if we ask the teachers they don't know anything.
And we need in 4 weeks do a work with a widget in javascript, 2 Asp.net mvc, 1 asp.net web api. All with authentication.

So we are all fucked

Im currently doing my first project as a junior dev. I'm working with asp.net core and I had only used regular asp.net before. The project owner who was the guy that used to own the company I work for had only asked me if i was versed in asp.net and said that it was what I was going to work with. So from the start I'm a little bumed out. The difference isn't enourmous, but still.

First day, he says that we are going to use TFS for version handling (god damnit) then he says he has started a bit and has done the first push... And we're missing files. But he's asleep by the time i do the pull (9 hour timezone difference).

Next day he has gotten all the files up and I also get to know that I will be working alone and still have to use TFS.

A few days later he tells me I'm gonna present the first version the next week...

Oh, and did I mention that this is for one of the biggest companies in the world that the very top managers will use. Including CEO, cto etc

The fuck? I'm trying to automate login for an asp.net website from a C# console app using HttpWebRequests. I used Fiddler to see how the login happens and how the browser obtains the session and auth cookies from the server. When I replicate the same procedure from C#, I am able to get both cookies withoth a problem, but when I try to use them to get data about the user, I get a 500 ISE. What the actual fuck? I've double-checked every single header and the URLs and it's doing literally the same thing as chrome: Get asp session id (POST)-> get an auth cookie (POST username and passwd) -> interact with the site using the session id and auth cookie (GET). And obiviously I don't have access to the server logs... :/

Asp.net core. There's a page with the users list and invite form. The invite form opens automatically on page load, if the viewmodel isn't valid. So the invite button opens the quack'th page of the table.

I fucking hate asp.net web forms. Today we implemented listboxes, so we expected them to just be a wrapper for HTML listboxes. NOPE! They are simply selects. Why they decided to hijack the name and do this, I don't know. That does explain why they don't have multiple columns like true listboxes.

I created an ASP.Net Web Application as my personal Web site. Tested it locally then wanted to test it in a live environment. I purchased a domain/hosting package then publish via FTP. Point it to homepage and nothing shows up. I call customer service and they say it's hosted on a Linux server but their options don't show that it is Linux based. So I had to change it to a Windows platform that it should have already been on. SMH 😣

- Web Forms are not supported in Core and are not planned to
- After 3 weeks I still do not have a work laptop

- Working from home, where I have the resources available, is apparently against company policy (I'm not 100% on this yet, can't find it myself)

We have a bespoke management system that was developed in different times by different people, and hence each system acts like the others don't exist. Our current developer (not me) has been with us for around 15 years (he cares too much to leave, but does also have another primary occupation), and has been maintaining this old asp.Net codebase.

I've been slowly trying to plant the seeds of desire for something else, and we might possibly - by the end of the year - begin to use ERPNext to replace at least one of the systems, and then eventually more.

So I'm in the process of learning go for building RESTful microservices and I have a really stupid but simple question.
Does a go microservice need more than one file? I ask this because my day job is c# and for those who know, asp.net rest projects have a lot of files

I've been fighting with my xmlrant.com hosting provider for a good several days now regarding enabling web deploy for my account.

According to their screenshot it all works, according to my various attempts still getting either 404 or 401 with the same login / server details!

So frustrating... It almost looks as though same authentication works differently for them locally and for me externally... Maybe domain name needs to be in FQDN format... Or smth else... Either way this will probably end up with them saying fuck off, all is working on our end.

And as well it might - it just might be my incompetence... *self-doubt creeping in*

So far I need to settle for unreliable FTP deploy, which introduces big overhead as always copies entire deployment folder, even is only a few files are actually changed.

My coworker pushed changes to almost all of our ASP.NET pages. However, he did so by pushing only his files, and when asked to merge, he overwrote all of our changes to those pages since he last pulled from the server, which was ages ago. We were three changesets past that overwrite before we noticed things we'd already fixed were gone. Had to revert, which we didn't know how to do, and we didn't know what he changed in his push, because he didn't comment on the changeset. He undid weeks of work, thankfully we only lost a few days worth over we reverted. We're going to have a quick lesson on merging correctly on Monday when we all get back

As a fan of C#, I'll be entering the world of web development with ASP.NET, but there are so many things to learn before getting started! Javascript, bootstrap, css grid stuff, angular vs react things, docker, microservices, http and REST stuff, accessing some remote thing through ssh. I feel so intimated and don't know where to start!

Someone is having the same problem with VBCSCompiler on Visual Studio???? Every time I need to rebuild solution I must kill the VBCSCompiler.exe task before that.

So far in 2020 the only work I’ve done is front end and even though I’ve improved (a little) It makes me sick. But today I actually get started working on backend in ASP.NET Core for the first time. I am excited.

So after a couple of days of playing around, I just finished the larger part of a program that my new boss wants in C# (which is new to me). So far I'm really loving the wide variety of functions, but I'm struggling to get used to the fact that everything in the ASP.net part gets "processed" (like using BuildForn to create a form tag instead of just typing the HTML) and it just slows down the process a bit 😂

Look at this easy piece of code(that I added) from an Asp.NET Core 2 template project(MVC). I needed only to add this piece of code to WebHost.CreateDefaultBuilder() (in the Program.cs) to be able to setup a working WebServer which will listen and answer on that IP(local network machine IP) and port, then I opened that port from my modem on this local IP, then used DynDNS with noip.com, tested out on my smartphone with 4G connection and it does work!
This is the EASIEST web project setup and test that I've ever tried and that let me showcase something from my machine to the entire world! :')

I swear web frameworks are popping up faster than I can catch up, I mean I'm not even done learning react 😭 usually made projects in ASP.NET MVC with just jquery and it just feels like a lot of work to create more layers on the front end as well. Advice needed if you work on both front and back end what js frameworks do you use, and from experience which would you prefer?

I can't be the only one who gets this:

- Visual Studio frequently crashing. Particularly when working with databases
- Slowness when working within the database designer (after every change!)
- Random "errors". Literally could change nothing in a working program and then it will be throw an error.

My experience with VS and ASP.NET has been very frustrating.

I asked for some documentation on their React components, like where is the props, why is this component showing this side-effect and is there a component for X and Y so that you won't have to pay me in order to dig around in the codebase? I have a job interview on Thursday for a .Net stack suite of web apps. Thing is: I know C# and SQL Server pretty good (not necessarily together but that comes pretty easy to me). They also use Javascript/jQuery/ECMAScipt (they said it not me) and ASP.Net. In my web dev days I was mostly backend so I am super super rusty on Javascript and, though to a lesser extent, ASP. Do you have any tutorials and refreshers you recommend? Preferably in an IDE so I can hide my shame from the interwebs? Love you.

I have a 3 freaking professional experience as a .NET developer and was freaking able to deliver successful projects. My experience is .NET freaking windows form. And for every freaking time that someone would call and interview me they do freaking ask if I have a freaking ASP.NET MVC experience and I don't freaking have! I really hate working with learning management systems (LMS).
I make training simulations for retail companies and some of these have the worst, backwards LMS's out there.
The providers who install and manage these LMSs for the companies always insist we make our training run inside their own environment, but we can't since it's a 3D training made in Unity that doesn't run well in a browser.

Luckily some of these are fine to figure out. Just a few API calls here and there for authorization and reporting progress, but some are an absolute nightmare.

Just now one of the providers provided me with a 2000 page documentation of all the functions of the LMS's API that our customer is using. All I need are like 5 pages that explain what URL to call with what data and the responses, but now I'm stuck spending days trying to find the 0.5% of this documentation that I need to communicate with their API.

And of course, the documentation is vague as all hell. minimal descriptions of what each endpoint does. Subjects names are super vague, as in do I look for course progress or lesson completion state. What the heck is a Learning Event, is it relevant to me?

And the errors in this document, too.
Bullet-point lists with duplicate items.
language errors everywhere.
Property lists where they copy-pasted the description of properties.
An entire EMPTY chapter, literally a page with only the chapter's title.

I just can't stand how these providers barely seem to know anything about the API of the LMS's they provide to customers.
(for clarity, the LMS is produced by some big tech company, it's installed and maintained by some 3rd party which is our main line of communication when rolling out trainings to these).

It always goes like: "Hey, we want to use your training." "Oh, that's great, we have our own, simple LMS where you can view your employee's progress." "Nah, we want to use our backwards LMS. Here's a giant manual about it's API, go figure it out!"
And then I'm left here tearing my hair out trying to figure out which 3 calls I need to send their API from the tons of extra stuff it can do which is completely unnecessary and being unable to rely on the provider because they lack the knowledge and have such thick skulls about the implementation of the LMS itself that they also seems completely unwilling to help to begin with!

We have around 20+ small to medium size applications which I'm planning to rewrite. Since these applications can be run in different machines I'm thinking of integrating them in a electron app and sharing the desktop app to the users.

Should I learn C# or Java?
There are many topics over the internet but a direct opinion from you guys would be appreciated.
I would also know, what does C# have in common with asp.NET and web application development? It isn't clear to me

Sent a CV for a full-stack C# role. The CV is mainly a mix of working in ASMX/WCF, SQL, SSRS, SSIS, Distributed transaction architectures then with about 40% ASP.NET focusing on server side but also with some client side technologies and that I sometimes use Illustrator for creating/manipulating SVGs.

I've just started learning programming to be a web developer. I've learned html, CSS , now on C# and to go for ASP.NET, Java, etc..
I see a lot of posts in devRant and on Facebook about Programming I feel like most people reached far and it's too late for me start now.

and i tell you right now, it's the most shittiest site (front end && back end) i have ever done, and i'm never going back. 1/4 only of our class actually accomplished the target features.

So my job is now starting to spin back around towards more development styles roles.

Currently I am in the process of learning about an internal Asp.Net app for managing invoicing.

A .net core app to manage changes to rate card prices.

And a small python app which runs 40+ sql queries and writes the results to a spreadsheet.

This is the jest time I’ve used python, and I have to say I really like it

Recently i finished college and got a job as an ASP.NET dev in a company.
The company uses ASP.NET, ASP.NET Core and angular.
I've worked with flask, express and PHP but very new to C# and .NET.
I've learned C# but I'm having hard time understanding ASP.NET.
The documentation seems very hard for me.
Could someone please suggest some resources for asp.net and .net core

My web background us in PHP, with some minor experience in ASP.NET, so I wasn't expecting to have much trouble when I joined this company to work as a web programmer.

Turns out the entire freaking website is written in ASP classic.

So at work we use ASP.NET web forms. Since the .NET Core exists now, and that uses ASP.NET MVC, is it worth looking into that and learning about it? My boss is hesitant to move over for our next project because web forms will go faster because we don't have to learn something new.

Learning asp.net core currently.. A little bit chaotic but I like it so far

So, i've always loved programming for as long as i can remember. But lately while sitting here working with it i havn't had the motivation or drive to program. I'm currently at an internship because the school i go to requires it, and ill be done in about 2 months (been here 3 months already), and im really not feeling it anymore.
Maybe it's because it's ASP.NET core 2, or becaue im not getting paid.

Is this because it's an internship? Will i have a better drive for programming when i actually get paid for it? Or do i just need to suck it up and maybe spend more time programming at home?
