I had just started my new job and deleted 3 years of data that the client had spent over £450,000 collecting 😱
another developer used my PC to quickly access the clients database while I was out the room as I had sql management studio open. I went back to my PC thinking I was connected to my local database, did a few truncate tables to test my software and :0 minutes later I get a call asking why there was no data on the server!
Thank god for backups 😓7 -
Tried to impress the boss with my work ethic by staying late to install a new VoIP system. Wasn’t even part of my job description. A few days later I had a flat tire on the way to work. It took me a couple hours to get that taken care of. When I got to work, the boss told me I had to work 2 extra hours that week to make it up. I reminded him that I had worked overtime recently to install his new phone system. He said, “Doesn’t matter. You still need to make up the hours.”
From that moment on I never worked one second more for him than I had to. I quit less than a year into the job.13 -
I just had to completely uninstall and reinstall Visual Studio enterprise because I wanted to convert from trial user to subscribed user.2

Was struggling with depression and stress for an extended period. So, naturally, I had more sickdays than average.
However, I was still managing to overperform on my goals, so when it came time to discuss salary I was hopeful.
Didn't get a raise, not even a pat on the back. My manager told me he couldn't justify giving me the raise I had earned simply because I had had too many sick days. So my actual performance didn't count. Everybody else got raises though.
On a previous occasion he told me that I had to 'Learn what it means to have a job' and get my priorities straight. I told him I already had very little social life so I could spend what little energy I had on work. I tried to explain to him how depression works and he assured me he understood.
Yeah, right. My colleague with back problems, who suddenly couldn't walk, didn't get that treatment.
Depression is real. I'm so glad they ended up firing me so I could work for a place that cares.8 -
I had my first nightmare in years:
I was at work, and suddenly saw that my NS has changed for my personal domain. I also saw that the domain has transferred to another provider and a company had bought it and had it for sale for $7000.
I woke up, but it took 10 minutes before I realized it was just a dream.3 -
My girlfriend sent me out to buy basil for soup... Had no choice so I went. At the mall entrance, 4 interactive digital signage panels. Used one to check for the supermarket's locations and saw that a display corner was flickering. The app was grabbing the full screen but had a bug with the windows' task bar. Messed with it a couple of minutes, stopped app and... Surprise! Windows 7, logged as administrator... I had to go to disk management... I really had to.
PS: gf said that I should be ashamed of what I did...8 -
I had to integrate an internal service. The doc said:
Lorem impsum...
fuck me I had to reverse engineer it.5 -
Yesterday, I had a meeting to prepare today's meeting, which goal is to prepare tomorrow's meeting... 😣7

Had to pack boxes again today. (distribution center job to pay the bills until I find an IT job)
Was hungry as fuck.
Then I suddenly had to pack a truckload of FUCKING COOKIES.

I had a boss I hated. Couldn’t stand him. Then I got a call saying my dad had collapsed and was at the hospital. I went into his office and told him I had to go because my dad was in the hospital.
“Why are you telling me?” he said. “Get the hell out of here.”
I looked at him quite differently after that.3 -
I was just trying to fix a "bug" for 2 hours and then found out I only had to "clean" to project..6

So I have been freelancing as web developer for 5 years. I was also playing basketball professionally so I was only working part-time, building websites here and there, small android apps to learn the job and I was also reading a lot to challenge my brain.
When I stopped playing basketball about a year ago, I thought I would really enjoy coding full time so I pursued a job.
With no formal education and just a basketball background on paper, in the collapsed Greek economy, as you may assume chances of landing a job are minimal.
After about 40 resumes sent I only got an internship. It was a 4 month, part-time, no pay deal, and then the company would decide if they would like to hire me later.
The company had 4 employees and they are one of the largest software distribution businesses in my area. They resell SaaS bought from a third company, bundled with installation support, initial configuration, hardware support, whatever a client may need.
I was the only one with any ability to code whatsoever. The other people were working mostly on customer support with the occasional hardware repair.
After the 4 month period they owner (small company, owner was also manager and other roles) told me that they are very happy with my work and would like to keep me part-time with minimum pay.
Just to give you and idea if the amounts of money involved, in Greece, after taxes, my salary was 240euros per month. And the average cost of surviving (rent, cheapest food possible, no expenses on anything but super basics) is about 600euros.
I told him I needed more to live and he told me ok, we will reevaluate a few months later, at the end of May 2017.
I just accepted it without having many options. The company after all was charging clients 30euros per hour for my projects so I kept thinking that if I worked a lot and delivered consistently I would get a full time job and decent money.
And I delivered. In the following months I made a Magento extension, some WordPress themes, a C# application to extract data from the client's ERP and import it to a third application, a click to call application to use Asterisk to originate calls from the client's ERP, a web application to manage a restaurant's menu and many more small projects. Whatever they asked, I delivered.
On time, version controlled, heavily documented solutions (my C# ones are not exactly masterpieces but it was my first time with the language and windows).
So when May ended I was pretty excited to hear they wanted to keep me full time. I worked hard for it, I was serious, professional, I tried a lot to learn things so I can deliver, and the company recognized that. YAY.
So the time comes to talk money. The offer was 480euros per month. Double my part-time pay, minimum wage. I asked for about 700. Manager said it's hard but I will see what I can do. So we agreed to keep the deal for June while they are working on a better offer.
During the first half of June I finished my last project, put all my work on a nice folder with a nice readme on every project's directory, with their version control and everything.
The offer never improved, so I said no deal, and as of today, I am jobless.
I am stressed as fuck and excited as fuck at the same time.
I will do my best to survive in the shitstorm that is called Greece.
Bring it on.9 -
"Updates were installed successfully"
No Windows, you got stuck at 83% and I had to hard reset you, we tried again and you got stuck at 91% so I had to hard reset you again... That is not what I call "successful" updates...5 -
Client, two months ago: "Where is the new and complicated custom software?! We needed this a week ago!"
Also client three weeks after delivery: "We still don't have time to test the new and complicated custom software. You'll have to wait for payment a little longer."6 -
I had an old rant somewhere about the most unproductive meeting I’ve had.
It was when I joined a new team. I was asked to hold a meeting to solve the issue of why nothing gets done on time and nobody showed up to the meeting on time including the manager.1 -

Gear up! It's a long story.
The last job aka my current job, which I totally love(see my about-me) was a full time offer after I intern-ed for 6months at the company I'm currently working for.
It was through campus recruitment.
So, there was this particular company that I had had an eye on all through my engineering years. I had been training severely, talking to seniors who have been placed there, trying to find as much as I could about the company, clearing mock interviews online and everything. They had an online round first, I cleared it with the second highest mark. (250 of us wrote it).
Then about a month later, it was Recruitment Day (notice the reference to Judgement Day) and I was super nervous. The recruiters knew me as one of the toppers and knew I was in contact with my seniors and I immediately knew I had a chance. All my friends and staff were rooting for me. They all knew I had a thing for this company and that I had been working hard.
I had five rounds. I was the first person to clear all of them. I was incredibly happy. It was all happening too smoothly to be true. This was what I had wanted for 4 years!
They announce the results and that was where the fucking plot twist was.11 -
I accidently used the wrong language to code in... So I had to port my code over to the right one.8

Guy A : so I had to downloaded the one you sent ...
Guy B : wait you what
Guy A : I downloaded the file you sent
Guy B : you didn't need to download, you just had to save it
Guy A : NO, I had to download, if not it will cost my mobile bill
Guy B : NO, saving it won't cost any
And here I am : (屮゜Д゜)屮3 -
For a project day we had to write a game of our choice in Java.
"You should make this game using the JSwing library and make each component a JComponent"
Later I learned you can simply use a Bitmap as a canvas.
NEVER. EVER. BASE. YOUR. GAME. ON. SWING.
It inefficient to the top of my taskmanager. I had to wrap everything with something like a virtual playground where I had to manage everything myself to not roast my cpu.
I had alot more fun debugging hundred lines of C code with print statements than writing that shit2 -

The school I went to didn't have PCs when I first joined (had some RISC OS machines instead). They got Windows 95 PCs eventually and networked them. I had no experience with networking before this, but had a PC at home. We all had mapped drives to resources on the server. The PCs were pretty locked down - no "Run" command etc.
Anyway, one day the head of IT came in to one of the lessons and asked me "how I did it".
What had I done? Well, clearly he had seen something I'd taught one of my friends. I wrote it down for him.
1. Right-click the desktop
2. New shortcut
3. \\nameofserver
4. OK
Such hax, being able to see the file shares on the server.
Shortly after this, all computer areas had signs saying "no shortcuts allowed"... -

I had an interview where I had to demo rendering a video on my component. I had copilot on, so it suggested this url. The video didn't load, but the video component was rendered so it was enough.
Later, I got curious about what it suggested, and I thought about it, but didn't think it would be that.
So, I clicked on it and got rickrolled lol.3 -

I hate school, but I wish I finished collage…
Just to imagine all the free time I had, I if I had it now I would do so much... But I left and Got employed, and now I have to watch myself getting fucked over salary wise and not learning anything new at work. Constantly being called junior just makes me wish I stayed in school. And use the extra time to do my own company
So if I had the chance , I'd go back... But I have bills to pay! (Sad)9 -
I was called in to a meeting this afternoon, and for some strange reason, my boss had all our salaries written on a board, and I guess she had forgot to erase them before I got in. I've been thinking about asking for a raise for a few months now, but after seeing that list, I'm wondering if I should ask for more than I had previously contemplated. Would that be considered unethical?9

I rewrote something in clean 20 lines of code, while my coworker had worked hard and ended up with like 80-100 lines. I did not talk to him before I did it, but asked him to review what I did. I still had to learn how to properly work together..3

I had a delivery deadline on the same day when an urgent support request came in. My boss was a stupid sucker who was afraid of taking responsibility, and that's a vice I absolutely hate with bosses.
We had quite a heated argument where he just wanted me to give priority to both things, which I declined because I had no idea how much time the support research would take me.
Finally, he decided that I should work on the support item immediately, but only for up to one hour. He was totally surprised when I accepted that without further argument. I told him that all I had wanted from him had been a priority decision, and that was one.
Felt like explaining to my boss what his fucking job was.4 -

A while ago I found one of my old notes. It was from around two years ago. I had written down my programming long term goals and what I wanted to learn (more like a wishlist). While I was reading it, I realised that throughout these two years, without me being actually aware, I had learned all of it. It had been a slow progress but eventually not only had I reached it, but I had also surpassed it. It made me feel pretty good about myself. 😊

Described each victory in my year review with manager.
Each thank you, I poked my Manager to promote me if she thinks I deserve.
I got promoted a year later.1 -
As a freelancer I get side requests from bigger development companies from time to time that don't have the time or capacity to deal with it themselves.
So usually the employees are pretty friendly but they do not like to read any of the documentation I send with the code. They call me up with stupid questions that are usually answered in the documentation.
I had sent them everything they had requested last Thursday so they called me on Friday to ask the usual stupid question. However, this time I had beforehand decided to have some fun! I told them I had to leave for the weekend and to call me back on Monday. Of course they called me during the weekend, but I didn't answer. So they called me today.
What I had done before handing it all in was I had named the methods that I wrote illogically, while stating and explaining the whole situation in the documentation extra clearly.
So I answered the call today and the first thing they did was apologize. Since I didn't answer their calls during the weekend they finally realized that the best way to go is reading the documentation instead of calling me all the time. They were freaked out at first because they thought there was something completely wrong with the code and they had to tell their client that the deadline had to be pushed back.
We are all good now :)6 -
In a programming exam, we had to write a program in 60 minutes, part of which was sorting some strings by length (strings the same length had to be in the same line)... I had like 3 minutes left, so i wrote this beauty:
boolean b = false;
for(int i = 0; i <= 999999; i++){
for(int j = 0; j <= strings.length; j++){
if(i == strings[j].length()){
System.out.print(s + " ");
b = true;
}
}
if(b){
System.out.println();
b = false;
}

Worst part about it is that when I got to bed I had about 5hrs to get some quality sleep, now I got non it feels like. Fuck.
Can anyone relate? :/7 -

The craziest deadline I've ever had is DEFINITELY to learn Android programming AD WELL AS iOS programming to make an app for a startup i currently still work with, and the time limit i had was a week. Toughest week EVER, so far.
Thanks a lot, bosses -_-11 -
Was running low on ssd space, so I decided to have a thorough look at what was occupying all of it. First I found out that I had about 5 gigs (!) of leftovers from microsoft sql server which I unfortunately had to use once (thanks microsoft for your shit uninstallers). Then I found I still had a .gradle folder (uninstalled a while ago, maven ftw) with another 5 gigs of cache. That should give me some room to breathe.4

I once inherited a project that had been outsourced for more than 6 months to a company at the other end of the world. Although the PM had almost daily contact with the developer, the project wasn't technically followed up.
I had already recommended code reviews 3 months before I inherited the project. But of course these had never happened.
The project contained all the nice-to-have features, but the core wasn't working. Loading the home page (with 20 records from a DB) took 15 minutes.
We then had roughly a month the get the project straight.4 -
I was working on email reporting to business customers and in the test phase was mass sending email to my own account. However it suddenly stopped working and it took me a few minutes to realize I had commented out the hardcoded line with my email address. I had to write to each Customer and apologize for the spam after my error. Also had to get whitelisted our email server after the incident with a few.2

I had to write a script to clean some crap from a database.
In particular it had some records containing multiple names and I had to split them.
It was really a nightmare because the separator was not always the same, e.g. "John, Mark and Bob" or "Alice+Mary".
«Ok, let's use a fucking regex: ",|(and)|\\+|/|&"»
Then, I realized there were some "Alessandro" in the database. Yeah, Aless(and)ro. Shit.
So I had eventually added more crap into the database.6 -

I could kill someone. My boss occupied the whole cluster for 24h yesterday, so that I had to wait until today to see that I had a small bug in my code. I wasted a whole day waiting around for something I could have fixed in 5 minutes yesterday if I only had 1 free node on the cluster 😠
Worst of all, if anybody else had occupied the whole cluster for so long without asking, he would have sent an angry e-mail to the whole institute 😠4 -

As a kid, I wanted to try new stuff. New programs, new games, new websites, new OSs. Those were the days when we had very limited and slow access to internet and cloud was still to be discovered. I had everything on my local HDD.
So one fine day I decided to try out Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Laptop.
I emptied a partition, burnt the image to a USB drive and booted from it. Installation went well.
Somehow I ended up deleting the logical partitions on my Windows machine. Not only I was not able to boot into Windows, my HDD was just one tiny partition. I cried my eyes out. That disk had everything I ever had.
PS: I recovered everything by restoring the partitions.5 -
I took a online job interview today.

I just had a thought while thinking about Algorithms and data structures. Honestly other than for technical interviews I have never really had to use specific implementations.
Then I suddenly had a thought... What if I wanted to build my own operating system... I would also learn c++ as well....
I can't think of a reason to build my own OS though... Hm.. What about a programming language? Would that be like a mini-OS, and also need all this stuff?2 -
Not a fight I was involved in but one I observed. A junior dev on my team and a server ops guy had major personality conflicts. One day the server ops guy had enough and physically went after the junior dev. I was senior but still pretty new to my own career and had no idea how to handle it. Server guy got fired soon after. I was glad I didn’t have firing power and that he didn’t even report to me anyways.2

Intel 8085 micro-processor, anyone?
In my graduation, one of the semesters had Intel 8085 programming in the curriculum. It's because of that dev-kit I understood what assembly-level language means.
A simple scenario of adding two numbers would result in half a page long sequence of commands that literally didn't excuse any mistakes.
It made me understand the semantics or basically what we get taught as "middle level" languages.
We had to memorize the exact pins of the thing and had to draw it from memory. And we had to learn the instruction set it had.
Later we had to learn Intel 8086 but its instruction set was way too complicated and I gave up on it.
I know it sounds geeky but I randomly remembered it today.13 -
Life is good when you're responsible only for your task, code you write.
While i had souch a beautiful life, I could come to wrk, make coffe, magic and be happy. Sometimes it would be fast, sometimes slow. Sometimes I had to learn before implementing, sometimes I just needed to code it down. I had working hours. I had only TL and client to deal with.

After like, 7 years, I had to code a native (as in, c++) VR activity for an Android project.
I had forgotten how much I hate fucking JNI.13 -
Well, this one was very satisfying.
When I resigned from my previous job, there was this one last task I had to finish. The task was to implement an identity and access management system that would work across three different platforms they had. I used to work on one of them which had nothing of the sort but the other two had something of their own. Here lies the kicker, it had to work with existing authorization system in other two platforms. After explaining multiple times why that is a bad idea, I gave up. I created an interface, no implementation, documented how the interface was meant to be used and got the hell out of there. -
I like going to random Google subdomains. Today I had a typo when seeing where "timer.google.com" goes, but I later learned I had a made a typo, and typed "timex." Well, looks like a great time to buy a watch.1
-
Sometimes i feel pity for the people who had to work without git. Then I realize that the same people are my boss now.
Screw them! I'm happy they had to go through that!! 😂😂 -
I got my last job from stack overflow jobs. They had me implement a code test that involved a decent amount of features and took several weeks of my freetime to complete, but in the end I had a short phone interview and I had gotten the job :D
-
Any better way for breaking telnet ?
(I had no idea who was ever going to connect to this ip using telnet so i had no chance to sniff the password :(
Now it is taking ages to brute force )
//mac is already spoofed ;)1 -
Fuck you windows!!!
I had to leave town but wanted some surveillance and had no cctv or ip camera set up. So I added my laptop to teamviewer and used its webcam.
Now its not showing up on teamviewer and most likely because WINDOWS SCHEDULED A MAJOR UPDATE
It probably rebooted and went on to boot into ubuntu. Should have fucking run ubuntu in the first place. I am going to be so furious when I get back.
*in case you are wondering, I had to leave in a hurry and didn't go for ubuntu because I had never used the camera in it and wasn't sure if ubuntu had the required drivers *1 -
I had a challenge this week. I had to develop a business site in less then 5 days. I’m pretty happy with the result especially since i estimated multiple weeks for a site like this.
Ofcourse the manager had to come over and complain and bitch about alignments of elements. I’m sorry dude but with this kind of abnormal time pressure you don’t have the right to complain. Period.4 -
So this is about one assignment I had in my first programming class in university, I had a group which had 3 members, one saw the assignment and just quit, the other was always saying, "I Know what we have to do to complete this exercise" and I was like "great, then do it"...
Seconds later he just didn't do anything like "WT* man"2 -
I had a coding interview with Amazon. I had to implement a depth-first search algorithm with no prior experience while 2 devs watched me code on a collaborative IDE. To make it worse, the connection was terrible on the conference call and one of the interviewers had a very thick accent. I barely understood what they wanted me to do until I typed out:
Breadth-first search || Depth-first search?
// Sorry, phone keeps cutting off and I can barely hear you
Yeah, I didn't make it to the next round. :(2 -
I used to wipe server data before avery update because i had population script for product.
One time i wiped data and had not remembered that we had allowed users to register in the previous release
I now take backups seriously -
So I spent all day today trying to debug a C++ Program and after hours of digging into the code , I realized i had copy-pasted a for loop and had forgotten to change the loop variable from i to j. 😑4
-
I can't believe it is real: I just had to talk someone out of calling a navigation point "FAQ User"
Had to admit I'm from Germany and so was the client. It's quiet common people pronounce FAQ as fuck here3 -
Not really a devs rant.
I ordered a HDD from samsung with more storage online. Today I wanted to replace it. When i took it out i was shortly confused, which one i had to insert, so i though the one with Samsung label had to be it.
Well, it wasn't1 -
Have you ever wanted a feature to be a certain way but you had to settle with something easier and less cool/impressive?
I just had to and it’s very dissatisfying. -
Had to play with old code of mine today. I wrote when I just started working a few years ago. Had a bit of shame be mostly a good laugh at pass me. Dam I used to be bad1
-
I had a nightmare this morning in which I had been working on a project for months without pushing my commits to the remote server. Then the office suddenly burned down and I had to tell my boss that months of work was lost because I was too lazy to push. He was sooo mad. 😬1
-
We had one group project where we made game. We had like 3 developers, one guy to do some artwork and one to do most of the project management. And at that point in the project I had done most of the work so far (but not because the others didnt do anything, I just had fun coding).
One day said artwork guy managed to accidentily revert 100 of my commits without even opening a single code file. He didn't know git and issued random commands. I wouldn't know how to fuck up a repository like that even if I wanted to. Usually I am rather calm but at that point I was a little bit pissed.4 -
So the bus I get into work has been cancelled and my office manager said I could have the day off but I had some important stuff he needed me to finish so I remembered I had TeamViewer installed on my work machine so I'm going to be working from home today4
-
Last week i had a talk with my boss. Actually he more had a talk with me. Why i wasn’t able to finish my work the sprint before. I told him i had to run not one, but two project at the same time and on top of that had to show a new coworker around.
Some how i keep thinking about quitting this shit.1 -
// First rant
So I've spent the last three days trying to send requests to a website in C# (never had done that, so I had to learn from scratch) and using XPath to select certain nodes from the html.
Today, I port it to a new UWP project and turns out it doesn't support XPath. I guess I should learn LINQ now...fml1 -
And I forgot to do half the metric tonne of stuff I had to do today. I'm not even disappointed anymore.
-
I had a dream that devRant introduced new avatars but you had to sign in with a Tencent account to get one4
-
I love meetings I got a valid reason to skip. Like today I got to skip standup and department meetings because I had actual work to do.
-
I had to deal with a shitty project that I had to make a pre commit hook to make sure there was no swear words in the code.
https://gist.github.com/meain/... -
i wish i had no university classes (or at least, only programming classes) so that i could learn more about different technologies and had more time to code :(3
-
I ran a big long-running terraform apply and somehow thought it would still work if I locked my laptop.
When I went back the next day (I know lol) terraform was hanging, had to force stop which screwed up the remote tfstate.
Had to spend a whole day manually deleting about 70 AWS resources that terraform created but had no knowledge of because of the corrupted state.9 -
So had a plan to do a gamejam this week seeing I had nothing planned after work but nooooooooooooooo of course everything I could ever need to do decides it needs to be done this week -.-
It's what I get for being excited I guess :-( -
5 GB magically lost!
Had to partition a drive and i used easeus partition manager..reduced 1 partition from 100 to 95
Said computer had to be rebooted so i said ok...went to some boot screen of easeUs and had to hard reboot computer...ended up with this
Had to copy 95 gb worth of files and format drive with windows partition manager to fix it
Wasted 2 hrs

Forgetting to switch the git branch from master to back to Dev after committing. If I had a penny!4
-
I once had to convert a VB6 app to .Net and came across a function with 46 optional params. Has anybody else had a similar stroke of luck?1
-
The amount of digits Python can handle is staggering...
I stopped at 100 000, because I felt that I had proven my point. That's approximately 330 000 bits! (And yes, I had to use Python to be able to calculate that number)
Doesn't work with floats, though...4 -
Wednesday to thursday I had a 24 hour programming challenge at college. Needless to say after 18 hours I lost my train of thought and literally forgot the past 3 lines of code I had written, causing me to re-write them for 15 minutes straight.
Great times. -
Do u ever had the feeling that you're just too tired to do anything? Well I just had a full week of just doing nothing.. fuck this1
-
a guy that i had to work with. He was a senior developer and asked me for helo in python. First i had to explain to him how to use OOP and when he couldnt implement my solution he blamed me for his slow progress... serval times4
-
i had past nightmares with ubuntu but i still want to stay away from windows, any recommendation?14
-
Had to put something on my notebook to indicate the front and the back...
So I just slapped a DevRant sticker on it I had laying around :34 -
I have had a very unproductive week. I haven’t even pushed anything to bitbucket or github. Any tips to curb unproductivity?5
-
I had ".NET Developer" position. In reality, I was doing php, Android, unity, c on arduino, some desktop .NET and web too. Oh, I had to work with nodejs too. I was getting paid 6 times less than now...
-
I might be wrong but all the interviewers I’ve had lately have been duds and didn’t know how to interview
Like. I can’t tell if I sucked or they had no personality and energy for me to work off of -
In my university years I had a computer engineering professor who had an ascent and it sounded like an "S" being added to each word. I went for the first lecture and not knowing if I was at the right room I left after hearing:
"Togethers we wills do projects with some chips"
I was like ... thanks I just had breakfast! -
It's 4:00 AM here, and I decided to go through my old project where I had put my maximum effort, it is a PHP Project, sadly not in production, I had built it from scratch, the sad part is password hashing, I had to go through 3 different files before the actual password is getting hashed, password_hash($pass, PASSWORD_BCRYPT), I am feeling so stupid right now I can't even describe in words, ok bye
-
Just realized that If I had spent all the time on 3d modelling instead of programming I would have hundreds of models on cgtrader and probably wouldn't even had to work anymore...1
-
why don't monitors have physical fucking brightness buttons?!
I had to navigate through menus of 4 different monitors, just to adjust them to #mondaysucks
and I had to do it the same time, so they would all match brightness
tomorrow I have to do it again, I guess I'll block off a few hours on my calendar for it :D3 -
By god knows what means I ended up at a computer science university where I had to take this exam where I had to know programming and...I ended up loving it
-
Just spent the whole night awake to do a university coursework.
Not because I was late or it was difficult, but because the framework we had to use was so wrong that I had to take a 20 minutes break for desperation for every line I wrote. -
There was some fragmentation and corruption that i had to eat away. I like things properly partitioned.8

Product Manager: Is there an event in the staging environment that we can use for testing orders?
Stakeholder: [Out of his comfort zone because he’s taking over tasks that used to belong to his assistant and he doesn’t have a new assistant yet.]There’s an event for 6/9/2022 that still has tickets available.
[Today is 8/24/2022.]
PM: You do realize that the website doesn’t allow users to buy tickets for events that are in the past?14 -
At a bar while everyone had fun on my phone fixing a bug I thought about for a while and suddenly had an idea on how to solve it.2
-
Emacs is the reason why I screw my own agenda for Saturday, but sweet baby Jesus the mode-line now looks H O T for sure1
-
Today I learned that even if I had gotten someone to sign a video release I still would have had to re-ask permission two years later. And then I would still have to take the video down after publishing it because the person suddenly had a falling out with the organization.

Anyone here in IT that had to deal with Windows 7 PCs magically lose their nic drivers overnight? Had 10+ PCs I had to manually reinstall drivers after an overnight patch. What kind of sh*try upgrade was this and how did it happen?2
-
"Longest you worked without rest + why?"
Maybe around 7hrs or so? It may not be much, but the thing is that I had to work almost the whole night through.
I was about to show off a game at the school festival, and I had to finish multiple playable stages while not having a dedicated stage editor application; I was using Notepad as the stage builder. I had to work through the night before the event.
Ended up catching the flu after the event, but I don't regret it.1 -
There's no favourite coding challenge for me. Of course I do them when I'm asked to but I don't think anyone can derive how Well someone works from these short toy challenges.
I once had a proper prototyping Challenge that was really fun. I had to Work on it in advance to the interview. I had to define the scope and how much time I will spend in it in advance and then explain and defend the scoping and all technological/architecture decisions and handle proper criticism in the interview. No bullshit coding challenges Had to be solved :)
I think these prototyping challenges will Tell you way more about an applicant and his worth as a dev than those little challenges ever could.4 -
Way back in university, I was trying to do an assignment for an OOP class and it had to be written in C++. I was writing a simple function since I was a beginner at it and I couldn't understand why my program wasn't working. I spent an entire practical class lesson trying to work out what the hell was wrong and in the end, I got my friend to look at it. After only 2 minutes of looking, he asked if I had declared my functions. Obviously I had not.

Around 24 hours. Over 48 hours!
It's was in high school, I had a job in grocery store stucking up shelfs. I had two shifts that weekend. it's was Saturday I had just finished working a 13 hours shifts and my mates was pressuring me to join for video games and drinking.
Ofc I went there, got super drunk (beer pong and drinking league of legends).
It got really late(around 4am) and I knew I was supposed to be at work at 6 pm, so I call dad told him to drive me home and then to work! He did as awesome as he is!
Had to work 12 hours, I did 11 hours then my boss send me home.I was basically til at bit drink then I arrived I work for 4 hours I had the worst hangover the last 7 hours of work.
When I came we had guest and I had to be present!
Poor life decision, no regrets! -
I had my first client meeting today.
Now I understand the pain of dealing with clients rather than doing work.
I don't relish the fact I had to stay an extra 2 hours either. -
Went onto a highschool that had a focus on computer science. Met almost all of my current friends there and I am even working with two of them as freelancers today. The teachers on this school were the best I ever had. You could see that they had fun teaching us and were excited to work at this place. I am really happy that I decided to go to this school because I had some great years, found lot of friends and decided to study applied computer science afterwards!
-
I thought bluetooth headphones are overrated and unecessary until I had to work with VR and had to put on and off the HMD multiple times per hour. Now in-ear bluetooths are a godsend. Will invest into better ones once I have more money.2
-
So I, after 3 days finally perfected a 'texting' code for 2+ computers on a network in shellscript... I was so happy I had a spasm and kicked my laptop off my bed and broke it, I had to start over!
-
had to call my college's tech support today (TECHNICALLY yesterday... 0019 atm) and I had to stop several times and say "please hold, i've just broken your site."
why do i end up doing this even when i really don't want to
WHY AM I CURSED2 -
I had long time to figure out how to send an email via java over wildfly with @Resource annotation and finally found how to do it, according StackOverFlow, i just had to create new instance with @EJB Annotation instead create it with "new" *face palm*1
-
About to scrap the multiplayer functions in massmello altogether and work solely on the singleplayer package instead - i had far more done in regard to singleplayer functionality before i had the packages split anyway. >:(

I'm pretty sure they had the new version of the file available and there was no need to translate an old one to monkey language, so I had to manually copy everything.
Why. This just escapes me. -
I don't know if anyone here, who tried to answer the question for real, did not answer "my current boss" or "myself", but I am fairly certain, I still have to meet my best boss.
Had two so far and both had their flaws that are hard to deal with. -
Been playing Minecraft for years. I had to watch a video on how to eat cake in Minecraft. I had no clue that you could eat the cake. I always thought that the cake was a lie.
Can someone please make a rap song out of this?3 -
I had this guy. He had an annoying voice and the worst trait of him was he was an Solaris fan. on nearly anything he would ramble that solaris is supirior to any other os. Luckily he was gone after a few months, unluckily i had to take over the stuff he did.
-
ok this is fucking ridiculous.
i had devrant open and my screen went to sleep mode. i tried to unlock my phone and my whole phone froze because devrant froze. i couldnt unlock to my main screen everything was blank. this happened multiple times by now and every time i had to wait like 5-10 fucking minutes for devrant to crash so i can force close it and use my phone. this time i had to restart my goddamn phone so it can unfreeze.3 -
Has anyone ever had a lead developer interview you, and then be so much more nervous than the person they're interviewing? I feel like I've had this happen to me way to often.
-
For fuck sake. This is literally the 10th time today either Rider or Unity has had hiccups and just crashed. Every single time I had something which wasn't saved and had to be redone. 😡 I could be so much more productive without having to rewrite a lot of my code twice...1
-
Had to fix a small program that wrote a report to a file and was supposed to uploaded to FTP but kept sending error notices. For a week I had the FTP part commented out and just manually used filezilla every morning till I realized the config had an old password... Not a proud moment1
-
For weeks the excitement had been going about the Eclipse, I guess because they don't know what it is like... I had the luck for one project, I don't think I want to see it again... 😧🙃😏

Husband — Had your lunch
Wife — I am asking you
Husband — I am asking you
Wife — Why are you copying me
Husband — Why are you copying me
Wife — Let's go to shopping
Husband — Yes, I had my lunch -
I learned to program in community college where they had us learn C# but I honestly didn't catch the programming bug until we had to do assembly language. I just found it fun to break what I needed to do into 's,mall steps and at the end I get to see the result of all that Work!
-
I had to fix errors on my seagate 1tb expansion drive. Not only did it take 16 hours but also it failed to fix everything. I had to repair partition and format to ext4. NTFS errors can't be fixed on Linux. Fuck exFAT and M$.2
-
Was working a record keeping system for the Airport for tracking departures and arrivals and some COVID-19 data
ended up realizing that the stack i had gone with wasn't gonna cut it
Had to port the whole thing to a new web framework realizing that the one i had gone with made some operations a bit complicated -
Ever since i added cloudflare to my site i get this error. everything exploded and the site no longer loads (i had to set cloudflare so i can use gitbook docs so im forced to use cloudflare even tho i dont want to use it). Anyone had this problem before and knows a fix?5
