Day 1: Install Ubuntu
Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."
I'm so God damn happy.8 -

Last day at my first job. Spent 7.3 years here.
Joined as a kid, leaving as a grown up man.
So many mixed feelings, and being an emotional person, if I were in office, I'd have surely cried.
Crazy experience. So many flashbacks all at once.8 -
I was assigned to be a mentor for the first time in my 23 years of existence. She was a junior.
Turned out she had more knowledge and coding experience than me. So I could not mentor her.9 -
I've been doing programming as a hobby since I was 10 years old, I've always found my teachers are good at IT but not that good in Computer Science and programming, this year a new teacher joined the IT department who has actual experience in programming etc.
Our school uses two services, a rewards system which for some reason can also show our timetable, and another service for displaying our homework. In my spare time I made a project which combined these two services and showed it to him. As the first teacher with actual programming experience he was impressed and now I get to 'pitch' my project to the teachers higher up.
TLDR; It's good to have a good teacher -

My resume and posted work experience lacks any mention of Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. Then again it also lacks any mention of Java, and yet recruiters still call me a Java master. 🤔19 -

First experience was getting malware from an npm package which I ranted about a while ago. That it can even happen is beyond my imagination.
Second experience was today when our app broke because a fucker who wrote a library doesn't understand semantic versioning.
If you're gonna publish an npm library, please do the whole fucking world a favour and learn how to version your shit correctly, so my app doesn't break! If you do BREAKING CHANGES don't change the fucking last version number you filthy piece of garbage!

So this candidate came to an interview for a sys admin position. I didn't give my approval on the CV before, the HR department just sent him to the technical interview.
I began to ask him different questions related to Linux, bash commands etc. but he didn't know what to respond. Then i asked him about his past experience and he just replied me: "this would be my first job. I have some experience with administrating some Counter Strike servers and I was admin on a Metin server".

Recruiter: oh yeah your not what we are looking for.

Recruiter: what do you mean?
Me : so you "looked at my profile" which has all the information identical to my resume for a job which requires 10 years worth of experience in a software which was only released 6 months ago. Why don't you learn to ride a bike and then in 10 years time. Ride a hover bike first time without falling off and I will assess wherever or not you have the experience on first glance. Don't waste my time again.

But anyway, it was a nice learning experience for me. I spent more time on preparing for them then I should have. No regrets though.

Several years ago, I was going to watch my first porn movie, and I was so afraid of the porn page publishing on my facebook "Elizadeath liked Xporn.net" or something like that (I had family on my facebook friends) so I:
1.- Used an old tablet (even its screen was crashed)
2.- Removed all email accounts (it has Android)
3.- Uninstalled all the social media apps, including youtube
4.- Put a piece of tape on the frontal camera
5.- Bought new headphones
6.- Navigated at the Android's default browser instead of Chrome, and in "secret" mode
7.- Deleted the cache and history after watching the movie XD

I GOT MY FIRST CLIENT!! I'm not charging too much since it's my first client and I'm just focusing on the experience rather than pay. Were having a meeting Friday so he can tell me what he wants cause he didnt have all the info at the time. It's just a simple website and if he requests more when I present it I'll ask for more muns16

Got to work full time and show off my expertise in "reallife scenarios" for nearly a year.

In the first lesson on the school the teacher mentioned the fibonaci formula, and because I already had a little experience in programming I wrote a program witch outputs a given amount of numbers after the Fibonacci formula and showed it to the teacher who didn't really showed any reaction. At the end of my time in the school while the exams preparation he told us that last year one part of the exam was to program for the Fibonacci formula. At this point I realized that my little experience in programming was already to much for the class and why I did not learn any thing in 2 years.

Last night I compiled my first kernel module!
I'm not talking about a ./configure; make; sudo make install kind of thing...
I wrote, compiled, loaded the module and saw my silly "Hello World!" message on dmesg!
Using some previous experience on embedded I fired up qemu with a fresh buildroot image and the kernel image I just made, thus I can now test and debug without doing kernel changes to my workstation!

My boss just passed me few tasks that my coworkers fucked up. They have more experience, but they do not follow any code style standards and usually write shitty spaghetti code. Was cleaning up some of the old files on my system and found the first ever raycast program I had written.. in c++
This was during a time im pretty sure all of you guys just like me learnt the things that you could possibly do using code.
The experience of the first time I ran this and saw the sprites appear was the awe all of us have experienced in our own ways.
The reason I found this picture interesting is many of us end up losing the wonder and sense of excitement that got us into development in first place.
Go back , clean up your drives .. find your old code. I'm sure there is no better feeling than looking at the past you , writing bad code , with a probably bad language on a bad editor with sleepless nights to get nothing more than the output we wanted.
It's amazing when you realise everything is better when it's simple.

The whole "first job" and "experience" situation is fucked up.
How on God's green earth am I supposed to get tucking experience if you cock suckers won't hire someone for their first job? Like fucking hell.
It's not like I'm going for a "skill demanding" job... I'm trying get a fucking cashier job. I'm fairly certain I can run a cash register and stock the shelves of a store without any experience doing it. It's not exactly rocket science...

Quite recently I received an email from a recruiter who first claimed that they had seen my resume, told me I may be a great fit for a job of one of their clients, and then proceeded to list the job description. That's typical, but what caught my eye was the fact that the first requirement he mentioned was 7+ years experience with Java. If he had actually read my resume, he probably would've seen that not only do I not have any experience with Java, but that I am a 20-year-old who made damn sure to put on my resume that I only have 2 years of experience in total...4

Today I replaced my php teacher (who was ill) during 3 hours. It's not the first time, I already helped my fellow students for this php class but this time it was different. It's was kind of official since my teacher came in and said "Adrien will give you the lesson today, he knows it by heart".
I have to say that I'm starting to like teaching, the satisfaction that you helped someone getting better at something is just amazing. It was a really good experience !9 -
Had an online programming interview for a start-up, writing code into a shared Google doc while on the phone with the interviewer.
Specifically told that I could just use pseudocode, so I did, without worrying about access modifiers, full variable declarations and use of "new" for making objects, or specific type declarations, etc.
Got told at the end that I "lack experience, and really should have defined access modifiers, declared types, and so on, and that they needed someone proficient in Java. That was the first time I knew about their Java requirement.5 -

University, first year. I went to my Java/OOP teacher's office to about the course (I had started programming C++ ~5 years ago).
I wanted to discuss the fact that some parts of the course seemed too theoretical for beginners in my opinion. Rookie mistake : do not criticize the cursus of an academic if you are in your first year, even when you are right. I learned it the hard way...
The teacher started to tell me that I was just a first-year student, I had no experience yada yada...
To that I replied "I'm doing C++ for 5 years. This is OOP so yeah I do know a little more than you think".
I will never forget his reply "LOL C++ is not Object-Oriented !"
I never went to his course after that. I learned a few years later that the teacher was a well-known a**hole along his peers and got fired by the University...40 -

So met a guy today in college and it was his first day in class. He told me that he is working as software engineer and having 4 years of experience and primarily works with Java lang.

Heading to japan on the 12th, my first solo trip ever. I always wanted to visit it, but now because of my developer paycheck and me being annoyed because no one ever has the money and/or time I am heading there alone.

A 27" monitor with a 1080p resolution is a match made in hell. Oh the eye bleach. (At home I got 30" with 2k or 1440p resolution. Much better viewing experience.)
I'm having my first day in the office in the new job after two week of remote work. I think I will prefer working from home office definitly (even though the office coffee machine is nice).

So, it’s been a week since I started the internship. I am kinda lost to be honest.
The first day was awesome, but I have been going downhill since then. I make so stupid mistakes and it seems like I always think different than my mentor/employer (me making mistakes). Then he corrects me and I have to rewrite the code which I had to spend hours to think and get working. 😕😕
As @RantSomeWhere said, the guy is actually nice and still appreciates me and helps me all the time. I am really thankful for that. 🙂
As @plant99 said, I do have to be working a lot to try and meet the tasks that I am given. The employer does tell me to not over work but I still do if I have to, to get the thing done. I don’t feel nice if I don’t finish the work. So I do spend up to 12 hours (not continuously) on it at times. 😅
The code base… oh my god!! It is so bad (to me). Don’t get me wrong, we use the linting and auto formatting tools, but I can’t get over the 2 space tabs in C++ code. It makes me feel like I am not looking at code but at paragraphs of mumbo jumbo stuff. 😭😭
Oh and yes, it is confirmed. I HATE FRONTEND WORK! Especially when languages like JS and C++ are used in combination and interact with each other. 😨😨😱😱
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate JS or frontend, but I hate doing it myself. So not my cup of tea. Kudos to those who actually do it! 😎👏🏻🎊
Overall, I guess, it is going decently. I feel so scared at times, consumed by the fear, that my code will be wrong and he’ll be disappointed in me. Yea I know that I shouldn’t be upset with how others feel. But it does make me sad when I disappoint my mentor (who is still rooting for me). 🙁
I am hoping to get better over time. This is definitely a great experience for me because my code has never been judged before. I have always been the “king of code” in my college/social circle. 🤭🤭
Honestly, this is actually humbling. I guess I definitely needed this 😅😅. And as they say, you don’t improve by being the top. You improve by leaping forward, ending up at the bottom of the heap of the next level, and growing up from there. 😅
Oh and I also realized - remunerative benefits are DEFINITELY motivating 😂😂😂😂
And the 5 days work also definitely makes me MUCH more excited for the weekends 😆😆😂😂

I’m in a big company now. We have all the resources in the world. We promote best practice. We don’t even seem to have deadlines. We mob on everything so that we get the benefit of all our experience combined.
So if all that is true, why in gods name does the first class I open have shed loads of hard coded settings, IP addresses and GUIDs in it?

Got my first rejection after my first job interview via e-Mail today. It was about a local webhosting company.
I feel a little bit sad about it, but I am glad that I have made this experience with them and hope that I can use this experience to better myself in future job interviews.
What bothers me the most is that they told me in the mail that they are sad to send that rejection mail to a friendly and warm person like me, but they do not give a clean explanation why they had to reject me.
Was it because of someone better than me? Am I not qualified enough? What is the reason ffs?
I have send them a mail back mentioning that I am thankful for the conversation we have had, but also asking for the reason of the rejection.
I do not think that they will reply me back, but I hope they will.5 -

Two years latter the client calls me because he had a problem... Merging hundreds of access 97 databases... Exactly what my software did (besides editing, filters and remove duplicates)
Told him I got mad, deleted the source code and was already working on a company...

Today was my first day in a Molding Company (CNC operator)... IT was fine, I barely could hold on physically but I did it :D In less than two weeks I'll be operating my 3 new machines like a PRO.
But that's not the full story... I came home, my dad calls me, and has a mold drawn on paper (2D) for me to model in 3D and print... lol.
I'm proud, not just because I got a new job at first try, now just because my dad asks me to build stuff, but Also because my dad is a DIY guy with lotssss of experience... And now he's the one asking for help, opinions, how to do something...2 -

There is this general idea that people have that when programmers are able to run their code in their first attempt, without any error, they think of ourselves as geniuses. But i think that is the case only when you are starting to code. If a programmer with enough experience runs his/her code in their first attempt without any issues, he/she just says their thanks and moves on, because they know that the code can sense cockiness and if they get too carried away now they'll have to pay the price in future.3

Ok so this is my first rant. I'm 16 years old. Have had some experience with Python and AI and I want to pursue it. But, I'm in class 12 and all my teacher teaches me is how to open a frickin file in python. I mean I have begged her to tach me Django but she's like no no child we only study what's in the syllabus. Was on my first internship, told to analyse and prepare stuff for the Android dev to build an application for a big client. Did it before the end of the internship and team was satisfied with my job.
Because the Android dev had already lot of works on other stuff they let me start the development of the app.
The end of my internship is coming, the app is not finished but the team agreed that my work is not bad and that I should continue to work on it.
I finally get hired to finish the app, when we first publish it 95% of the code was mine and the boss started to stress because he let an intern (that became an employee) build the application from the ground. But the application got quickly its 4.5 stars on the playstore and more than 10.000 downloads.
I quit the job a few time after the publication of the app but I feel proud and happy that this team let me work on one of the biggest project they had as I was only an intern without any professional experience.
This is not "badass" but this is my first and best experience in the professional world ! -

I'm still on my first job. Started on November , 2015. I am a system analyst for the government. Love it very much. I work with great and fun people and my boss is badass. And besides all that, I get paid relatively well for someone with my level of experience. Really can't complain.3

Best team experience?
Well, first I'd like to mention that after some more experience in the field since, I realize that this company had some pretty terrible management infrastructure...
Nonetheless, I think my best team experience had to have been during my first programming job because my project manager... WAS A FREAKING DEVELOPER! It wasn't his job to be a developer obviously, but we were a small team essentially developing waterfall style, and he had to pick up the slack now and then for certain issues. The man was a genius and everyone appreciated him because you could talk to him about anything dev related and he would get it. The rest of my team was also very chill too, so it was all in all just a fun experience, stressful as it may have been at times.
I have not since had such a diversified project manager 😟 but then again, not the PM's job to touch code...2 -
Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.
Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.
I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...
Does anyone here know if there is some kind of documentary about that topic or did anyone here experience that first-hand?

First slide: based off of Java, hence the name JavaScript, but is not Java. Borrows most syntax from Java.
And they wonder why employers comment on the surveys: “unprepared for the workforce”
Looked up the professor.. no experience teaching or any background in cs. And people pay 6-12k / semester for this state university.1 -
Submitted my first proposal for a freelance gig and didn't win the bid but I don't feel bad about it. Asked for feedback and it turns out I lost because the dev who they chose had a recommendation from someone the CTO (decision maker) highly respected. He loved my proposal and appreciated my efforts on it and my bid was marginally lower than the dev they chose.
Overall it was a positive experience and I may have established a good report with the CTO in the process. -
First experience with Android: our professor of Software Engineering gave us a project about building an app for University indoor geolocation using BLE beacons.
Just found out that only a few PhD-level dudes did such a thing with much fewer good results.
Sounds like when your average-hedidnotrealizedwhataprogrammeris-friend asks you if you are able to hack Google Chrome.2 -
Had my first official coding interview for a "real" developer position! Really is a different experience. So much to do and so little time.

F*** u apple. From time to time I develop Apps for Android and iOS and boy is the whole iOS app distribution workflow bad.
I try for hours to upload a update for my app.
First I needed the readd my credit card then there were internal server errors and after that I needed to regenerate provisioning profiles.
Everytime I use something from apple, then I experience such a bad user experience. "It just works" not anymore friendo...3 -

Since I bought my laptop the screen was scaled to 125% (1080p display) so that it looks like a ~768p display.
I like it, it looks good, but now I'm trying it at 100% scaling (15" screen).
Yes, everything looks so small now, and my eyes cried for the first 10 minutes, but I'm starting to like it.
Do you have any similar experience? What do you prefer, 100%, 125% or something else? Why?16 -
And for the first time I am delving deep into an open source project(Node.js). I wish to understand the source but it's just different. There are soooo many things I don't know. I hope this will be a learning experience and I would finally be able to contribute to an open source project. 😃2

For some reason, Tableau is really heavy. I mean, all reporting software is a little bullshit, but Tableau... The server we had took 45 minutes to restart (no exaggerating - we timed it).
Reading the log files, yes, it WAS doing shit the whole time. Lots of shit. It seemed to be running just... Tons of software.
Tableau seemed to be aware of this because they have a page where you can check the status of everything. I assume that starts up first.
If you're looking into Tableau, two things to consider:
1) No, your braindead financial manager won't be making their own visualizations, no matter how many times the marketing team writes "drag and drop" on the Tableau website.
2) You'll make some nice visualizations but find that when you try to do more complex things, you run into constant roadblocks. If your manager asks "can you make it do x"? No matter how much experience you have, your answer can never be 100% "yes"... Or even "no" for that matter.
Not the worst experience with enterprise software, but definitely a surprisingly bad experience. -

After many days of going through my first time LFS experience, I have finally booted into my new lfs system with no problems :) Seriously the coolest feeling seeing it boot for the first time knowing how much brain power I had to put into it. Cant wait to continue the LFS journey!

The best code review experience I had is when I started with my first job I used to write 10 lines of code and used to get 20 comments on that, well i learnt a lot from him and now whenever i get review comments on my PR i actually feel good.1

My first experience with computers was in "technology" class at school.
The teacher told us we had to switch off the monitor then turn off the computer.
Once, I forgot about this and did the other thing around, and I got yelled at ... It traumatised me so much that for a few years I always did it that way, thinking that I could break something doing otherwise...
I still feel bad thinking about this and hate that teacher for such a useless trauma about a thing he didn't understand either.2 -
Today I had my first ever prod db fuckup due to too wide where clause in delete query. Spent 8 hours restoring service. It's 02.09 now and I'm finally home, going to bed.

I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.
Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.
How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. But what good does it do when i can't relate / understand or discuss this opinion?3 -
I was a child and I was playing Habbo, I was really addicted to it. A friend of mine in this game said me "why don't we create a fansite?" and I said "ok lol" because I imagined that creating a website would have been funny and easy. So I searched on Google how to create websites, and I discovered HTML. The first version was terrible, but with experience it went better day by day. It lasted 6 years and we had 200 users per day

My most humbling experience was finding the source code online to the original Pokemon games. It was right after I had finished my first text based Linux console game and I was looking up other programs source codes just for shits and giggles. Most of them were simple and I learned a few simple tricks but the red and blue Pokemon were the first codes I saw that fascinated me. The addressing, the memory allocation, even the simple audio processing was simply genius. So many unique innovations and techniques. If I achieve 1/5th of the skill I found in those files, I can die a happy programmer!3

One of the best times I had coding was when my friend and I were coding our very first program at University. Both of us had no prior experience with coding and really had nothing to do besides school. So we naturally became friends through coding.
Sometimes just thinking about those sorts of memories can take a great deal of stress of your shoulders, because one can think back to a simpler time. -

Had a call with my line manager today about extending a deadline to the end of the year. Given the work needed it’s a given as I’m having to pretty much refactor an entire app, plus I also suggested that I train the new guy to give him some experience as I have training and tutoring experience.

In the last module of my bootcamp(make all the jokes you want about bootcamp I have thick skin and a degree 😬) and just started applying for jobs. First job I applied for was a big company asking for 5+ years experience.

Okay. So. I was fixing my laptop (the screen was broken) and I decided to just boot it normally rather than into linux with my USB just to test it.
Once it booted up I thought "you know what would be funny, if I decided to look at my crappy first ever programs", so I fired up eclipse and looked at them. Spoiler alert: it was really bad.
I then decided to go to my first proper project where I didnt follow a tutorial for it like I had with most bigger things up to this point. This was when I remembered that all the files had a last modified date.
I decided to go back to my first projects folder to see when I made it. Turns out it was 6 months before I thought I had started coding.
Awsome! I have 6 months extra experience.
Turns out this means in 2 years, 3 months I'll have 5 years experience, which is about half a year after I finish college.
First of all, it does not seem like almost 3 years already
Second, I cant believe how soon after finishing college I will reach 5 years. I thought it would be *atleast* a year.4 -
That moment when you get your first job after getting your degree and one of your co-workers with about 5 years of experience asks you what is a static class because he never used one...

It was on my first year of university. I had to develop an administrative system for a tattoo studio.
But practically the only I did was consulting to db and saving information 😅 and the girl who was the owner of the studio told me that using the system was a wasting of time. It was easier to her do those things handmade
But I learned a lot from that experience -
It's just that your team doesn't have experience in "insert platform name here" so we want to use a third party to move "insert product name here" into it.
My first thought: why don't you just train the team with the product knowledge in the new platform rather than the other way around? Does anyone else see this happen and want to eat glass every time it does?4 -
My boss asked me and another one to make a webapp that uses socket.io as "api".
There are 2 client apps (one in ionic+react the other one just react) and the server code (nodeJS)
Now he started working on it too but he has no experience of nodeJS and no experience whatsoever on react and only heard of ionic.
on his first deploy nothing connected anymore.
But i gotta say I appreciate the fact he's trying to keep himself up to date with technologies we're using4 -

So my dad wrote down steps on my notebook for starting the 'Dave' game. I played that game nearly 2 years, along with 'Prince'. This brings lot of dos memories. :)2

Back in 2013, My CEO hired a new Manager for the R&D department, who supposedly had over 15 years of extensive experience with Windows and Windows server.
On his first day he suddenly turns toward my colleague, who is sitting right next to me and asks "Do you have a setup for Sticky Notes?", we were using "Windows 7".
The entire room turns toward him as he said that and started laughing quietly. -
You see, I was never really good at C. It felt too low-level for me to enjoy.
Right now, I'm forced to do a school project with C. For the last ~10 compilations, I've gotten no errors, contrary to my first prior experience.
Maybe I'm getting better at C.
Or maybe C is getting the better of me.

I had a coding interview with Amazon. I had to implement a depth-first search algorithm with no prior experience while 2 devs watched me code on a collaborative IDE. To make it worse, the connection was terrible on the conference call and one of the interviewers had a very thick accent. I barely understood what they wanted me to do until I typed out:

Everyone knows how hard it is to get your first job. Everywhere wants 1-3 years of experience.
What noone tells you thought is that's hard at the other end. When you're looking for architect/tech lead roles you will see loads of postings but upon investigation they're just mislabeled senior developer positions.
And of course, if you're looking for good money, it feels almost impossible to get beyond the screening stage... -
I think it was trying to learn how to make a CSS-only drop-down menu -- especially multi-tiered.
Even though that's when I was first learning, I'll admit I never totally conquered that one. As much experience as I've had with CSS over the last several years, I haven't had to build one of those menus in a while, which kind of means having to do it again will be frustrating again.
Or I can cheat and use whatever CSS framework I'm using at the time. 😏2 -

I have applied at multiple places and have never made it even to the first stage. The jobs I apply for, pretty much match my experience level and stack.
Does this have something to do with visa issues since I am from the Middle East?

The first Computer experience i can think of is when i was ~4 years old i used to draw things on paint I could print them as well, i think the computer was running windows 98 or 2000.
A few years later i remember my uncle showed me a irc server for pirated software, the client was a CLI so it looked all hacky but i had no idea what was irc,i thought it was just a search engine like google but for piracy stuff. -
Well I would say a pretty humbling experience was my last job interview where my new boss and hr guy were truly shared by my skills and then the first day at work where my boss said please do this decision, I really need an opinion by an experienced developer like you as I am not sure which one is the better one.1

Windows 10 is just a bad joke at this point. First it doesn't show any text in the menus, now it fucks up all the drivers. I really need to scrap it and install literally ANY other os in order to improove my experience but I keep telling myself that it doesn't really make sense until I have a new harddrive and I keep wondering if the Evo850 is worth it. Hmm... My first experience with computers was in 1991 or so, when my then best friend had C64. And I was 7. My first PC arrived in 1993. Prince of Persia is the first game I remember from that time. I started programming in 1995 or '96, writing useless things in Pascal. Using PHP since 2000. Still that’s my main programming language. And sadly, my kids have different hobbies than me, so they aren’t even trying to program.
I remember the sound of modem connecting thru phone line to some BBS systems and later to the first public and free internet service in Poland. I remember simple, really „computer-like” voice of my dad’s speech synthesizer (he’s blind person). I remember, when our time to „play on PC” was limited to max 1hr a day... What will our kids remember? -
It's the first time since I finished high school (2 years ago) that I get to review my CV. I included as one of my features that I liked to write "optimized code" and just realized how wrong that is. Those where the times when I had little to no experience at all and would spend unreasonable amount of time to write programs with the fewest lines possible (I loved python because its one-line capability).

This one is easy, being forced to use visual studio! In fact I made one or two rants about it.
To top it off using NuGet as a pm was also not a great experience to say the least.
Luckily I was not alone and my team agreed and we rewrote the entire legacy code in Java... A much much better experience!
So that was my worst experience.. My best experience was that I started my first big non-school related project and I am super excited!! -

But to pay the bills I recently started working in accounting in an insurance company, registering payments from ~10 years ago (my first office job, retail and restaurants were all my previous experience). The job is boring, I feel like nobody gives a shit about it, most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing, I don't get ANY feedback about my work... Went for a interview for a first time after I've found a job as developer last year. It was my first time trying to get a job in gamedev. My dream has come true - they asked me about what games I like and we have talked about mentioned titles for about ten minutes. Doing MCA from a distance learning university(like IGNOU) in India is a joke. In my first sem I wrote some programs in C for considerably less number of lines as I had some experience with newer techniques.

Had my first ever final interview as a developer after passing the first ever coding assignment, now can't stop thinking if I should have answered the questions differently.
I was very honest to my answer when they asked "How do you test your application?" As I started building the app with 0 knowledge about software development and know nothing about software testing. So I just told them the truth that I did not do any proper test, I just used a checklist and manual test to test my app and the app that I created for the assignment was the first app that I write a proper test cases and implement an automated test. The same goes to other questions like automated deployment and OOP experience. I just told them the honest truth even though I know that they are not the best practice. Did I just f*cked up the interview??

I have had this awesome summer job for 2 summers as a mountainbiking guide, which is fun, has awesome perks, and pays relatively well.
But it doesn't really net me any useful experience, so should I seek a job as a programmer instead?

At my first professional experience, just coming out of university and with no experience on Android. And the company put me doing a port of a VoIP lib of a Desktop application in C++, to be used as a mobile lib for Android app. At that time C++ wasn't supported by the Android ndk.
So my work was learning about android ndk, learn about jni, find out a solution for the non supported C++ in the ndk and learn about a proprietary lib for VoIP.
3 months later and with a lot of help I was able to put it to working (forget about performance). Still they told me my work wasn't good enough and I should have done a better job. For a noob developer that was hard to take. -
Basic requirement of every Data Science college internship:
1) 2-3 years of experience... God damn it
2) Research and publications...(yeah right! in 2 years of college in which you taught me how to "work with" C on Turbo-C... I should have god damn publications... Well worked my ass on and have 2, but guess what campus internships says.. " no fucks given man", solve those damn segment tree question first then we will talk)

A recruiter calls me without any notification for a job I applied. The first qn i get is what is the salary I expect and how much work experience I have. Straight up rejected saying not enough experience. It wasn't a fancy company but surely looked decent enough. Is this pretty common or did I just dodge a bullet?1

My first internship.
The webdev department for a engineering company is in the basement. I was given a cubicle near the middle by the wall. The ceiling light was broken so I had to work in the dark... It was a 7-4 with no pay nor do they cover any expenses. I did manage to use the experience and got a job offer at a 'proper' software company in the end. -
Most humbling thing for me us talking to people who have more experience than me about a problem I have. It's kind of uncomfortable at first knowing you're not that good compared to these guys, but eventually you just realize they were where you were once, asking people better than you for help.

- own a degree in CS or related field: re-starting college next week
- extensive experience with automation processes: uuuh... I can write bash scripts and gulp tasks, how's that?
- extensive experience with Java, Angular, Selenium and Protractor: sure. Spent two weeks tinkering with those tools. Pretty much an expert already
- two years of experience: not even 6 months into my first job

He bugfixed another project for an hour and told me i had to work on this project instead of helping another client.

So I got my first rails jobs today!! After learning ruby for a little more than a year on my own I spent the entire summer slaving away helping my Sr dev friend gaining really awesome really world experience and great practices. Now I'm officially a software developer in title haha so excited!1 -
It is quite a hard pick either generally coding with friends for fun or getting my first ever program done completely by myself (and I don't mean Hello world but rather my first small 'project') . But I'd probably go with my first ever program. Even though retrospectively the code is let's say not that great, it was still an awesome learning experience to actually create sth working out of code

So, my experience is all with relational DBs (mssql) mainly and this job is the first time I've had to deal with mongodb.
I'm using the default compass client and I'm struggling with just how shit it is.
- A default font size of 5px high which resets every time it starts.
- Total lack of keyboard shortcuts.
- Inconsistent expansion& folding behaviours
- No saving of aggregates/queries if you accidentally click on another collection.
- ittle bitty query window which is actually multi line but with no scrollbar...
The list goes on.
And mongodb, whoever thought JavaScript is an appropriate query language... It's not.
It's probably because I don't have enough experience with it but the mix of quotes and $ seems so random...11 -
The time when I started building my first interpreter. I had no idea about them so I just copied the code from the book but it felt good really good and I learned so much about compiler and interpreter design. I guess copying the code and seeing things connect was the best and badass experience for me.

Biggest regret: Staying at my current dev job through the bad times (which started a week into the job). I've been here 2 years now, the first was a complete waste of my time, I was rudely managed and dumped on the projects nobody wanted. They were a complete miss-match for my skill set and not what I was told the job was about. In my first annual review I said I was applying for other jobs, I got moved to R&D within a couple of weeks, it's been better work and management wise but there's a perpetual threat of being moved back. I have my second annual review tomorrow. The money isn't great. The experience has been a mixed bag. After the first year it was quite interesting. But I probably won't be staying long.2

Today my old professor wrote on my school's slack channel that someone was needing some js and css work on their web page. Even though i have a good grasp of programming (I've been studying for 7 years while working as McDonald's to pay), front end web work isn't my forte, but I might be able to do it.
On the one hand it would be nice to have something to show to potential employers, but I'm a bit too nervous and I'm not interested in doing front end for future employment. What was it like when you received your first client? Nervous? Confident? I want to hear everyone's early experiences. -

That said, DMT is probably a good way to experience death. After all, it is linked directly to production of a specific chemical inside your brain that is only present during birth and death. I never tried any drug whatsoever, and I think DMT is a very good first thing to try.

Just do the easy part(s) of the task first. Once you see that the task isn't as bad as anticipated, you're more likely to just tackle the whole thing. That's my experience anyway.2

My first experience with a computer was when I was about 7-8 years approx. I came back from school and dad told me he got me enrolled with a teacher who lived around 5 kms away. Me and my dad walked in the warm summer afternoon (one of my most fond memories tbh), cut through a meadow that had freshly cut grass and reached his place. He lived in the third floor, and there was a stray dog that used to stay in the second. The stench was horrible, but over time I got used to it.
He opened the door and showed me how to boot up a computer, then asked me to open LOGO (it ran on MS-DOS at the time). Taught me the fd 40 rt 90 stuff and I loved it - he noticed and asked me to go to town. I started drawing on the screen and remember being delighted at how it ran what I asked it to run.
We then did some theory, and every grade I finished my syllabus in like 2-3 days. Too bad we didn't have coding until I was like 14, but that's another story and deserves another post :)

Worst one was in my first ever web developer job. It was a small company where everything was done in Adobe ColdFusion. Was there for 2.5 years before they went bankrupt and I got made redundant.
So when it came to look for another job, I was hoping to get another ColdFusion related job. But a lot of company's requirements were pretty bullshit. Junior position, but must have 5 years experience.
After 4 months of looking, eventually found another job but as a PHP developer. But since my PHP skills were beginner's level, I had to start from a new graduate level salary all over again. Felt like the past 2.5 years at my first job was a waste of time. -
I remember when i was first deciding whether to do web programming or desktop applications, i chose java/C/C++ mainly because I already had experience. Back then when i was researching web stuff it was HTML + CSS + javascript and something called jquery, ok cool seems like I can pick it up in the future. Fastforward to 2018 and i was looking to get into it, BUT holy fucking shit what a confusing minefield and cesspool of javascript horror and frameworks and bloat, wtf happened??

Amstrad CPC 128 book(GWBasic), my first lines of code about a loop game (Thousand of lines without debugger or memory save!) So it was like woot after 3 hours writing to see running the endless ship gamming trying to avoid walls. I will never forget that experience when I was 9-10 years old and get back to code at 23.

For the little experience I had with developing a simple Android app (that may or may not see the light of day), I find that of you want to wing it on the go on your first app ever you're gonna have a bad time.
Any android-related doc will make you have even more questions. it's like they're teasing you with a piece of candy and then you have to bow to the gods of googling and stackoverflow.
I refer to the ArcGIS, facebook (sign-in and requests), and even the android developer page does not answer everything a beginner needs to know.
Is it just me because I'm a n00b? Or did anyone else have the same experience? Will I ever get to the day where I can code an Android app without struggle? -

I have an interview at a company this week who work in PHP, magento, angular js, swift and sometimes c#. Sounds quite good for a new grad with one year of experience in PHP and front end.
The problem is the salary is 20-22k. My friends are looking in London and the ones who ha e secured roles are 36k and 40k. They are roughly the same level of developers as me.
So what to do? Probably turn it down? I don't know what o should expect but I was hoping for around 30k. I need the money for personal reasons and 22k doesn't seem like a lot for a first class computer science graduate with a year and a half industry experience. I could be wrong?7 -

Anyone heard of a an interview process where you apply through a job site and the first interaction back from the company is a coding project?
I've had it a few times where I'm told there will be a coding project or there has been later in the process, but I've never had it as the immediate first step.
Why would an unknown small startup think that someone would spend a couple of hours effectively working for them without having the slightest idea about the company and culture. An application is usually classed as an expression of interest and a discussion into the wider detail is then usually had with some HR or recruiter representative (or at least that's my experience in the UK)6 -

Setting up a new docker environment for developing, its my first experience with it...
Guess who drew the lucky number to do the experiment...
Anyhow... Progress is slow, cause the sys admin refuses to cooperate, feeling threatened by the thought of us devs being able to do more ourselves...
Not to mention, our servers currently are a mess, there's no common ground, it's a mix of whatever was needed at the time, no documentation at all...

Got scouted by an agent for a educational institute. The position I am scouted for is a full-stack engineer. This will be my first interview, scheduled for next friday. I'm starting to look at how to get devices to send data to an endpoint for storage and analysis. I'm looking at AWS iot stuff like core and green grass but then I'm thinking that a REST API could also do the job. I don't need to connect devices to each other (in first iteration). Dont think I need any edge stuff either. Anybody have any experience with this?3

Hmm most incompetent co-worker? That would be the guy with a degree in IT who couldn't create a stored procedure without needing a team leader to tell him which keys to press. We were not his first employer and allegedly he had experience...
Perhaps this would be fine, learning curve and all that, for the first few weeks but when a simple select statement was still causing problems alarm bells rang loud. He got attached to the test team for a week before being sat down with the boss.... -
When I started at my first job I was a fanboy for a co-worker who writes codes like nothing and there's is nothing he can not do when comes to coding!! I really admire his work. I always think how does he do it?!
Now I have a fanboy for my work 😎 he admires my work he thinks that there's nothing I can't solve.

Has anybody experience with Scrum in small web development agencies? Especially estimating stories with story points instead of hours/days?
We have a new junior project manager, without any practical experience working agile, who wants to establish scrum because what he read about it sounded so good... I already worked agile with kanban before and I loved it, but I only have little experience with scrum.
I think scrum, or agile in general, won't work with the clients we have. Most of the time, our clients have a fixed deadline, a fixed budget (either money or time) and they know their requirements, so there is no much room for beeing agile.
Regarding story points, I just adding an unneccessary layer of abstraction, because the customer wants to know how long a specific feature takes. Sure, story points are just another, more dynamic unit for time, but then why nut estimate in static time unit in the first place? Another fear I have, is that some devs may be more ignorant regarding deadlines and expectations on customers side. "yeah I'm working for 10 days on this story, but it's 8 points!" instead of informing the project manager "Currently I spend 2 days on this feature, we estimated 3 days, but it seems I need 3 days more".
Maybe I shouldn't be worried, but it would be great if you could share your experience and learnings. Thanks in advance!14 -

I just setup Jenkins locally for the first time to do some CI/CD for a project using docker. Then I upgraded the container to the latest version of Jenkins.
I am liking it so far but haven’t really setup anything significant yet.
Any of you ranters have experience with Jenkins?
- would you recommend it. Pros/cons?
- what resources did you use to setup and expand your pipelines?
- any experience with Google Cloud Platform and Jenkins.
These are kind of open ended questions to start a discussion on the topic.
Jenkins will be used at least for deploying the front end built in React. I may also use it for deployment if the Golang API but that uses Kubernetes at the moment. -

Started my first experience with Udemy yesterday. The video seems to be buffering occasionally and switching to low quality frequently which makes it hard to read what's on the screen. I'm not happy about that the least bit. Is that normal for Udemy?

I want to share one of my recent interview experience..
so first round was telephonic and technical guy seems cool as he did not emphasis on syntax, function name etc.. but just took the info of my tech on which I am working on and discuss some approaches to find a solution towards the problem.. ( I guess thats pretty well for experienced dev)
Second round was assignment and its a hell of assignment :( atleast for me.. Like I work in CI 3 and I did assignment on CI 4. almost everything is changes in CI 4 ( I mean its structure writing the way of routes,models and controllers).. But I took the challenge personally and finished 95% of assignment ..
Overall this interview experience was pleasant one.. :) -

my first project was a star trek themed text based rpg adventure. it was a hell of spaghetti of if queries and gotos in gw basic. later these kind of things got something like an ui.
my first experience was my father doing mandelbrot sets from a magazine and i was watching building them up green pixel for greenpixel on an 8086 pc. it was raining outside and i was sitting in an arm chair with a warm blanket. this cozy feeling remains until today and might explain my personal attachment for this topic.
fortunately his failed attempt to introduce me into programming doing a morsecode translator did not stop me for long. -

My first programming teacher was from a payed course and he was a very good teacher but it just taught me the ABC of programming. How to be a developer and how to develop that's something acquired mainly by self teaching, practice and experience. So that the second course I followed I didn't learn anything new, the teachers were not so good and I they had to learn from me. It was shit. At least it was a free course.

Why avoid? Maybe it's part of the experience. Lets you appreciate a good company even more.
(That said my first employer was a bit.. twisted. Small, workaholic family, hands on. Lots of pressure. Probably drove some into depression or burn out. Learnt a ton though, and maybe made me a bit more thick-skinned) -
The following piece of advice will be for those aspiring for an IT service desk position:
When companies are looking to hire service desk agents, they're primarily looking for socially skilled people with strong communicative skills, rather than primarily technically skilled people. When I first joined the IT world, I went on different interviews for that position and across all of them there was one truth: all the interviewers were eyeballs-focused on my social and communication skills and a mere thin layer of technical skills was required (depending on how technical the service desk). In fact, I immediately got aggressively dismissed twice for two of those when I filled in a Myers-Briggs personality test according to my Sheldon-type personality (selfish, condescending etc). Conversely, when I applied for a new position and I faked that test into answering everything focused positively on the social aspect, I was an immediate top candidate.
Here's a definition from the ITIL Foundation course, chapter Service Management: Because of how lateral the function of the service desk has become today (not only used to solve technical issues, but also company-wide issues), the most important and valued skills when hiring a service desk agent are fully focused on empathy and soft skills and none of those are technical skills. This is because the service desk has people that are the front window of your company and thus you can't make social mistakes as to protect your company's reputation. That risk has to be minimized and you need the ideal people. The people who in fact solve the technical problems are behind a back-office and they are contacted by the service desk agents.
In the beginning, when I did my first service desk job, I also thought: "Oh, I'm going to have to convince them I'm this technical wizard". In the end I got hired for being able to explain technology in human language and because in the interview I successfully communicated and explained ideas to both the team manager and the CEO, not because I knew what goes on inside a computer. This is a very important distinction.
My friends have also been in service desk positions and ironically they were the most successful when they were empathetic slimeballs (saying: "of course, anything for you" while not meaning it, constantly making jokes), rather than people with integrity (those got fired for telling the customer they were wrong while being unfriendly).

Does anyone have experience with Google Drive (GSuite) and rclone? I want to use it as a storage for jellyfin (emby fork) and Nextcloud, with the first being only saved there and the latter either as or with a backup.

Tomorrow I'm going to my first international travel, and it isn't just that, I'm also going to work there.

So I have negligible experience doing mobile app development (simplish hello world Java app few years ago).
What's your advice to start getting into it? Flutter? Kotlin? I honestly dont have a clue. I want to target Android at first but very like this needs to support iOS as well.

I want to jump into android app dev. My first plan is to start build one using flutter and dart language but my workstation is slow. Android studio is hogging my memory and it really slow me down plus bad experience. I plan to uninstall android studio and using other tools. Does anyone here have experience working as a senior developer in a web Application development company with less than 15 employee's and having around 5 - 6 developers? can you tell me what are the roles and expectation of graduate developers in such company?
