Them: So you are interviewing for a programmer opening. Do you like programming?
Me: yes.
Them: do you make logos?
Me: ...I can...?
Them: good because you won't always be writing code here.
Me: I'm out.8 -
Friend: "Why did you buy a Macbook Pro? Look at the specs, the RAM, the storage, the processor.. heck, ain't it overpriced? I wouldn't if I were you"
Me: "No, I didn't buy it. My company gave it to me when I joined them."
Friend: "Oh.. okay... hey, is there any job opening in your company?"13 -

Job opening tells us that they want someone who knows:
C, C++, C#, Java, VB, PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySql, Postgree, windows, Linux, Mac OS, a degree in computer science and a few years of experience.
What you'll actually do in most of those jobs: Deal with Excel spreadsheets.10 -
"Can our app work from 8am to 9pm, Monday to Friday?"
"Yes but it's an app, it can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
"Oh... Is it possible to make it work only from 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday? They're our opening times and we want everything consistent!"
Slippery slope, a very slippery slope...7 -
I can't believe that something I threw together in an afternoon to make my work flow better turned into something people actually use! People are opening issues and suggesting things. Never thought it would get over 2.5k downloads! 😮18

Anyway, great stress ball! Let's hope it works4 -
How do I un-idiot my users when it comes to clicking on dodgy email-links??
Got a forwarded email just there from a user who said;
Good afternoon,
Is the below ok to open?
I just tried but got a popup saying I've been blocked from opening it.
I'm not sure who it is coming from and I am not waiting on anything but as it says its from dropbox and is important, i know it's okay.
Can you unblock the link ASAP please?
This is really impeding my work-day as I need to know what it is and act accordingly.
Regards... user.
The Original email came from a random jumble of letters with a subject line of 'important dropbox program' - not only does it look dodgy but its english is horrible! It said;
"Hi tu my freind,
You tu still read a pending verrry important document sent by one of your own contact to be vieweddd.
Install "Highly Confidential english.pdf" by clickinggg here
*insert link leading to something called 'viral-update-trojan.exe'*"
I mean, seriously... help!!! 😢
We have sent emails explaining how to hover over links and to not to click them if it looks wrong.
No one does it.
We hired a company to send fake phishing emails to train users in what to do.
It made no difference!
We now make people 'verify' their email addresses when opening any sort of link to try get them to actually look at what they're opening.
We also strip emails of original attachments and create 'safe' html copies as we can't trust them to look at what they're opening.
Everyone complains about it but Jesus Christ, this is why!!!
Its so exhausting!! What is wrong with people!!! Argh!!! 😤16 -
I have the habit of immediately closing parentheses after opening them, then insert the code.
The problem is, this applies to hand writing as well. Because you cannot move characters in a hand written exam I spend half of the time writing, then removing parentheses.
Whyyy brain5 -
I just fixed a bug with the ticketname "Sometimes, There is a strange behaviour when opening the app on some devices"
Feeling heroic now8 -
Happy 100k ++
P.S: please write longer comments, it's a pain in the ass to double tap short ones and it keeps fucking opening them6 -
I'm the lead dev at a tiny startup and was asked to write the job description for our open junior dev position since the new hire will directly work with me everyday. Since posting the opening online 2 weeks ago I've had 2 different recruiters contact me telling me about how my resume perfectly lines up with the job description ... no shit Sherlock, that's because I wrote the job description to find someone with my skill set.
So I've been messing with these recruiters. I told the last one I was interested so when he asked my salary I told him what I make but said I would settle for a lot less to get this job. Eventually he asked for my updated resume so I sent it clearly showing that I work for the company the opening is at. He called me back saying he's not sure what's going on so I told him I wanted to pursue the opening because I wanted to be my own boss. We both laughed but his was that nervous "I don't get it" laugh ... how sad for him.4 -
Meeting with American customers in Germany. One of them fetched a bottle of water with crown cap, but the opener was missing. She asked whether someone had an opener, so I got out a lighter and opened the bottle. Surprised looks.
My (Indian) PM: "That's a German thing, opening bottles with everything except bottle openers. Even with other bottles."
Customers were like, WTF?!13 -

Thinking about quitting my job and opening a bar named "foo" where the walls have a tapestry of random foo-bar code examples. (Easy conversation starter for programmers)8 -
I got a LinkedIn message from the HR from my previous company about a job opening as if I never existed and never met them before. I'm just a profile to them.
Stupidity level: HR11 -
Amazing feeling seeing your 9yo opening the browser, finding a programming tutorial and just start learning.
This brings fond memories to those days when we were craving for the books in 90s.1 -
The shortcut for opening chrome history on mac is ⌘Y
Why the fuck would anyone do this? Because when I want to open history, the first letter that comes to my mind is Y obviously.
Also, why is downloads J? Who comes up with these shortcuts?10 -
First time I've seen an app which willingly, intelligently, and sensibly turns off its own daily notifications after I never used their app for many many weeks.
Props to the devs for taking into account people like me,who are just too lazy to disable an app's notifications. Also Enki is absolutely incredible for devs so go check it out :D13 -
Rant rant = new Rant
rant.isRant = false // !!!
I woke up this morning after not thinking about my code for a day, and realized i had a flaw in my validation design. I fixed it before opening my eyes.
It's kind of amazing how not thinking about a problem can help solve it. Even if you don't know it's there!6 -
There are two types of dumb people in our office:
1.Those who try to open a .exe file with Word.
2.Those who ask me why the file is not opening.1 -
People on github opening issues saying shit like "aye, your extension crashes. Please fix or I'll uninstall. Thanks.". How am I supposed to fix an error I know nothing about? Error message? Extension list? Stack trace? Steps to reproduce? Nope. Nothing.
Don't be like this, please.5 -
Taught my whole team that you can enter cmd/bash commands directly into windows explorer in the location bar.
No point in opening git bash to just clone a repo or open cmd just to run a php server.8 -
Opening up a view file, and first thing I see is a function accepting 13 parameters.
I don't know where to start, so much wrong..
Kill me.5 -
Opening somebody else's code(11000+ lines in 2 js files) only to find a 100+ "var a" declarations and naming conventions like var chart1, var chart2. Best part? Not a single comment. Even better? The one who wrote the code doesn't remember what does what.3

Every student knows the struggle of opening the Downloads folder on a school computer. Gigabytes of information that will never be accessed again and at least ten versions of the same document.4

I've taken over a project with legacy code, this is one of the methods:

I was blowing dusts from my PC opening it's casing. My parents came near to me and said "Will this gonna wipe all the viruses from this PC ?"3
-
Why is every fucking job posting an “urgent opening”. HR retards in my country just throw “urgent” on the description almost out of habit because in their microscopic brains they believe it improves their chances of getting motivated candidates or some shit like that.
All it fucking does is prove to me that you are incompetent at scheduling recruitment.5 -
Got a promotion at work, now manager and opening a brand new location for the tech shop.
That means I have 5x the amount of income to help fund my company and tech, I am so happy.2 -
There’s nothing like opening a legacy system you didn’t build and has for some reason lasted the turn of the century, only to add a new feature without breaking anything.....
Would have been nice if I had written that JS function before saving the other file 🙄
There’s nothing like building in production 💩 -
Some years back (Window XP time)..
There used to be desktops mostly.
I was opening the CPU casing to clean the boards and my mother came near to me and saw lots of dusts inside. She realized something and told this : " You don't often clean these dusts and that's why your computer is getting more viruses."4 -
Minecrafters, come here :)
So, as I wrote before, I'm working on a custom minigame network called Silverfern, I've planned the grand opening for the 1st of February, which is my birthday. Now, the minigame base and 1 fast minigame is ready, the only real thing we have to finish is the punish system (ban/mutes) and a quick anticheat. I need to finish them before the grand opening, I hope I'll be fast and code good enough.
I've started working on it 1.5 years ago, I hope we can see on the server on February the 1st!11 -
Opening devRant is kinda becoming a reflex action for my thumb whenever I'm swiping through my homescreen
I'm loving it!1 -
just discovered CTRL+ALT+ESC shortcut to kill a window without opening the Task Manager.
KDE is AWESOME.
on Gnome you can install xkill & set a custom shortcut.3 -
When you ask a client for website requirements and they respond by pulling out their phone, opening a random indie game and swiping around, saying "It should be dynamic and colorful, like this game."3

Please fix this @dfox :<
When opening devRant after having my phone locked for awhile, the app freezes for 30-180 sec. It usually recovers, but not always. It's painful 🙁17 -

Saw a job opening that had under the duties: “Willing to put in extra effort…”. What is that supposed to mean? X job should take Y effort, and an appropriate amount of compensation for that effort. Why does the job require “extra” effort? I read that as; tons of unpaid overtime. Hard pass.6

That feeling when Visual Studio has been hanging for 30s while opening a project on your trusty Thinkpad, but it's running smooth like butter on that guy's Mac..3

Felt like a real badass in middle school when I made my first .bat script that would recursively open itself. Took only two words. Four if you wanted exponential recursion rather than linear. And I came up with it by myself.
Cheesiest thing ever, but I really loved freaking people out by opening it and just watch windows grind to a halt as it would run out of ram opening thousands of terminal windows. Hell, it still gives me a kick today when I show it to people the first time :D7 -
a friend of mine told me about how he hacked this website
all he did was opening the dev-tools in chrome and changing some values...2 -

Don't you just love it when relatives ask you to "fix his computer" and you end up opening it up to remove dust that's from 100 years back.. Oh, and for free of course since "we're relatives"1

Opening up the docs, a book or a bunch of random pages online.
build something stupidly horrible to familiarise myself with different aspects and rinse and repeat until it’s something I think is worthy of being released into the wild. -
The flyer says "lick today , grand opening" ....
Mannn I'm into it... Although I perfer tight openings...3 -
Got a notification from devRant. Saw that my post got 30++, Paused music and stopped opening my js files on my project, wrote a quick email to stickers@devrant.io, and then ended up browsing for so long I do not even know/ realize what time it is now, and certainly not what the time was when I started.

ha...
that I did NOT expect.
Opening a website in chrome. Laptop's transforms into a drone and tries to lift off my desk and fly away with its fans. I see warning popups telling me that CPU Tº is 100ºC.
Opening website in FF. Laptop calmly opens it up and raises Tº from 50ºC to only 75ºC.
And here I thought that Chrome is fine-tuned for anything you can throw at it.
And the website really has nothing fancy in it... Just some text to read, images to see in the background and some buttons to click on.
https://ignitis.lt/lt/...
its EN version, however, does not have the laptop-heater feature installed.
WTF11 -

I just saw this job opening for visual artists (not me at all, but still curious what kind of person they are looking for).
https://artstation.com/jobs/J1OY/
It's so detailed, a person applying would immediately know what is expected of them and what their role will be. Why isnt this like this for most programming jobs?
Example of programming job opening descriptions:
Knowledge of a backend language (ex: python, java, C++)
Experience with databases
Experience with making and using APIs
This does not in any way describe what I will do at all. (yes this is a copy of most useful information of a job offer I recently got). It does not state which language to work with (I know none of the listed ones, but I do know PHP, C# and javascript/typescript (yes I know) for backend languages.
What kind of database experience? I have worked as supermarket employee and when I had to order new things I had to use a application to update the database. (Ive done more, but who does not have experience with any kind of database in any way)
TL;DR The artist job opening description is so well described. Why isnt it that way for programmers more often -
I just tried Quantum and Chrome at my school libraries computer (4GB RAM).
Seriously?
Both times I tried opening my website (only one tab) and besides Quantum not even showing my website but a white loading circle... Here are both RAM usages..20 -
Waking up and finding your Notifs panel full is like Christmas. Slowly opening every mention and ++ you get. Then, just for fun, you read every comment on rants you've commented in. Oh and comments in your own rants are the best.
What a nice start for the day.5 -
There should be a "Did you get latest? There have been 'x' commits since you last opened this project" dialog box when opening any team project.3

For fucks sake! It's 2018 and MS™ Excel™ is still not able to store a file in UTF-8...
And neither can you choose the separators when opening a CSV.

I made the switch and my laptop is thanking me. The laptop is SATA II so I opted for a cheap SSD. Insane difference on boot up, shutdown, and opening programs.1

I got an email about the job opening of a "HTML Developer" in a leading telecom company in our country.
A HTML Developer? Really ? Are you expecting a html only website in this day an age? How can you be a "leading company" when you did not even know the correct term for a front end web development job post3 -

When you post an opening for a junior developer, and the only resume you get is a "Senior Developer with Team Lead Experience" you interview them anyway...
When that interview reveals their resume is fiction, and they're very junior.1 -

THE "INSTALL" BUTTON STILL SAYS "REGISTERED".3

Sharepoint intranet - took around 45 seconds to log in and open start page for the whole first year. Specialist went in to help. Now it only takes half a minute.
With 7000+ employees it means over 50 hours of wasted time _every day_ just from opening the start page once per employee and day.3 -
How I always feel about Xcode when compiling Swift code, opening storyboard files, or just in general.

Then instead of writing some code I go to devRant to rant about it ;)1 -
I still remember the moment when I found out that there's something other than Internet Explorer ("The Internet program" back then for me), named Firefox (v2.7).
It was simple stuff like tabs that fascinated me, it's an experience similar to learning a second language and opening up your mind and understand the abstract idea of everything.1 -
I don't know which one is worse.
Freezing of laptop while am important demonstration or battery dying in the same situation.
I forgot the charger back home and the only thing client could make out was that the software we made bricked my laptop right after opening it and that I was making excuses to cover it.1 -
WHY ISNT MY FILE HIGHLIGHT SYNTAX WORKING?!!!

I once accidentally pranked myself with a simple batch file that opened explorer windows on .25 second intervals.
The best part is that I was testing the timeout function and thought opening an explorer window would be the best way to gauge its success.1 -
My eyes are opening to a sad reality. It's not just software - people in every industry are as bad at their work as they can get away with.
On the bright side it means that a person who excels at one thing has a shot at excelling at others. Mediocrity is everywhere.6 -
First experience with a PC....
It would have been the Commodore64 and those giant 5.25" floppies, ah those were the days with CRT TV's.

I think I fucked up today's interview. Opening with non-technical questions really threw me off kilter.
"What happened the last time you conflicted with another team member?"
IDK, ask me what "static" means in C# or just let me solve "FizzBuzz".3 -
What's the point of opening a PR if you're just going to immediately merge it without even asking anyone to look at it? Just so you can say "Oh look I'm following process"? Well, you're not..1

I just contacted the support of one of our service provider for virtual tours. I told them that the iframe will open the website (in target self) instead of playing the tour, and that our clients will most likely not come back to our site, when they don't see a "go back" or something. Best would be, if the iframe plays instead of opening a new tab.
Supports answer: "I sent you a video, there you can see how to get back to your website"

After a programming exam, a student criticized me for using the "wrong" indentation style: I used 1TBS (opening curly brace on same line), but Allman style (opening curly brace on new line) would be "better" and "preferred by most other students".
The programming language was Go.7 -

In my early days of web development I was on the lookout for a good PHP IDE and stumbled upon Komodo IDE. Never in my life have I asked for a refund so fast. Crashed at the most random times, such as when opening files and folders. Even accessing the settings could cause it to crash. Besides that I found it slow af.3

Ok so I switched from iPhone SE (1st gen) to iPhone 12 mini.
And no crashes in devRant so far...
With the old phone, it was crashing sporadically when I was opening a rant.
Makes me wonder if that info could help fixing the crashes.9 -

It’s also strange that by opening up Chrome’s Dev Tool’s Console you can pretty much write old school C/Basic like code from when programs were transferred via a bound dead tree medium. -

Looking and fixing performance of any application is like opening of Chakras via yoga and maditation. One at a time till universe start flowing in harmony ie. Application start doing what it suppose to do at the rate that is acceptable to client.
Performance fixes is more like making application work at the rate which it's not written/design to do. -
Dafuq? Small people at creatorkit couldn't track me opening their spam and are now RESENDING it because my mac didn't load their spyware trackers in their first email? What even is this?

Is there any multi server monitoring software that doesn't open a port for itself? devRant app feature request:
Mark a post as "read" in the feed after viewing (opening) it. Maybe fade the text or change the color?
At the moment, there is no quick way to tell from the feed if the post has been viewed unless the post is "++/--"ed.
@dfox @trogus
Great app and community! -
Facebook doesn't even let users select text without opening dev tools? Either it's broken or broken by design. I think it used to be possible 10 years ago, but maybe I'm just fooling myself about the good old days. What a shit show the internet has become. Sad!5

I hate it when I receive an Excel file, that, once open, and without me realizing it, it has a bunch of hidden columns and rows. WTF, I can barely use Excel!, so I end up exporting to CSV and opening the whole thing.1

I genuinely want tp know why few devs don't add the opening brace on the same line as method/class declaration ??
Whenever I find a piece of code which follow such style a part of me cries thinking of the time I'll be spending first correcting...14 -
Iterating over 50 rows of data with selenium takes 8-10 seconds according to System.currentTimeMillis() But opening the site itself takes 65-70 seconds by itself. Why is this site so damn slow even opening it normally it’s slow as fuck and headless mode doesn’t help much if at all
Doesn’t matter much since I can just sit and let it do it’s 4000 iterations but I really ducking hate that 60 seconds just to load the damn page3 -
I started a new job in engineering at CenturyLink a few weeks ago - before this I was doing IT for dental offices in the greater Seattle area. Anyway, I wanted a registry tweak to make Excel open files in separate windows, instead of putting them in one. Today I was told by our IT that you need 16GB of RAM to open multiple Excel spreadsheets in separate windows. Suffice to say I told him he was insane and ended the chat.
And yes, I know there are ways to do it anyway, like opening new instances of Excel and then opening the file inside of Excel, but that's unnecessary clicks, dammit. -
Started working on opening my own dev agency. Does anyone here have experience with getting leads (clients)?2

That feel when you have more than 100 tabs open that need your attention

Question for database gurus:
I need to save the openig hours of my clients in a database. Each day should have different opening hours and also the possibility for 2 breaks during the opening hours. There should also be an option for different local holidays for each client.
How to I acomplish this in a clean/performant/scalable way? Thank you for your answers!10 -
Oh, look at Mr. Fancy over here with his "consistent indentation" and "readable code."
Let's just put the opening curly brace wherever we feel like it and let the next dev deal with a migraine. Brilliant!4 -
For once I like Microsoft forcing shit on you. Automatically pinning the new Edge to the taskbar and opening it on startup. Fuck of IE.

Me [posts in community forum for software vendor]: Where can I find docs on X? I tried looking in the Knowledge Center but I couldn’t find it.
Random person replies and writes a two paragraph response about opening a support ticket with the software vendor…that response could really have been reduced to two sentences 😑 -
Here's my opening rant. Websphere Application Server...when restarting your JVM takes so long it should have its own epic on the task board.

Best prank of me? I think: Making a screenshot of the desktop and setting it as the desktop background. It was funny to watch people trying to move the items. We also locked the screen and moved the unlock window almost out of view (windows xp). They tried opening the browser or the start menu, nothing worked...1

Anyone else using DevRant on iOS 16.0?
It crashes about 1-3 times a day. I haven’t been able to intentionally reproduce. The app just closes.
This never happened in previous versions.
I’m not an iOS dev so not sure how I can help prepare for public release. I’m not even sure if it is the OS, but since it worked with last iOS, I’m guessing.
Some of the events when it crashed.
1. Browsing comments on someone’s post
2. Double tapping to like a comment (it might be the rant as well, I don’t exactly remember)
3. Opening a rant from the list of rants.
Cannot reproduce. For example, relaunching the app and opening the same rant again didn’t cause a crash.4 -
Here's your Friday fun fact!
Too lazy to look up your current public IP?
ufw allow from `echo $SSH_CLIENT | awk '{ print $1}'` to any port 8080

The biggest distraction in all issue trackers is the hemorrhaging backlog of tickets that will _never_ be done, or aren't important yet.
This is why I just choose not to even bother opening it and let my PM close them out. :-) -
Today I found a subdomain whose CNAME record points to some s3 bucket that doesn't exist but on opening that subdomain, it redirects me to some other s3 bucket that exists

PS: there are none other DNS records5 -
Ah, the eternal battle between "Allman style" and "K&R style" bracing. Because arguing over where to put an opening curly brace is what I dreamed of when I became a developer.
Can we just agree on something and move on?3 -
When I have to update my APIs and Libraries with my poor internet connection; Hence, cannot google for solutions for my problems while the download is going on because opening websites takes a shit load of time.

So, so far for ending my life, I think it will be opening wrists. It seems the most non painfull way to go.
Better ideas ?5 -
Worst part of being a dev: have to wait for the compiler to build, then upload to device, then restart the app... A dozen of seconds are enough to lose concentration and wasting time on something else, which lasts much more than a dozen of seconds.
(opening devRant is by far the best of those wastes) -
Had to do something with Xcode for a while now. After 2 hours my tolerance for strange errors, which are solved with cleaning build folder or closing/re-opening the IDE, is used up for the next 10 years...
