Woke up last night after a dream and shouted to My girlfriend:
"this has to be a f**kin Boolean !!!!"
I think I am a fulltime 24/7 Programmer :D6 -
When you're programming instead of sleeping but you would like to rest the same. Please tell me how...12
-
Just heard someone bragging about his one night stand. Whatever mate, I've got two night stands. Either side of my bed.11
-
How do i learn coding in single night? - someone asked me.
I gently replied : Pack your Laptop, and travel to North Pole in beginning of winter, you'll have 6 month of night to learn coding.
Once there - really just Google it there are tons of Excellent tutorials on web.6 -
"let's be all productive tonight!"
Who was I kidding, a night of sleeping longer than 5 hours is all I want right now.
Good night, devRant.6 -
00:00: Yeah I'll change that now, it'll only take 5 minutes.
00:05: well that's done, better do this too though before I forget.
02:20: well that escalated quickly.. Better grab 3 hours sleep while I can.
04:00: Fuck.4 -
I code through the night until 8 am, then sleep until 6pm+.
My family then calls me out as being unproductive and lazy.
Why must the whole world be oriented against night owls like me? 😥15 -
So this happened to me today.
After spending the whole night coding / watching Netflix I was sitting in my chair and looking at my screen with VSCode (dark theme of course) open. It was pretty dark in my room because the only source of light was my computer screen, which was still pretty dark because of the dark theme.
So, while looking at my code I suddenly noticed that the room had gotten a bit brighter. I wondered wtf was going on.
I looked out the window and saw that the sun was rising. Then I looked at the clock:
5:30 am.
Me: 'oh, lol'14 -
Saturday late night wisdom.
Software developers you need to work on communication skills.
Everytime LinkedIn says need a problem solver. It means a guy who can understand what non technical guy is asking for and translate that to a software or at least come up with a example of why he is wrong. Explain them. They are not dumb fellows for asking that feature. You might think the feature is stupid. Don't assume this. Sit with them. Understand thier user flow, understand the frustration your software is causing them. Then you'll see why are asking for that X feature.
Every feature request made is basically my opportunity of understanding of product. Don't wait for users to tell you requirements. Understand and suggest, implement prototypes and show them, a causal question such as "Hey would you think providing a keyboard shortcut for this submission is great?"
Understand our job is not just to write software.
Our job is to solve thier problems using software knowledge.
Don't you agree ?4 -
You might call me an insomniac, but I am definitely a night owl. Night cat sounds more exciting. Time for another exciting night in the Land of Code! Meow, meow12
-
Late night programming with pops.
This man has taught me most of what I know and I have a terrific amount of respect and debt for him, and his work.
Here's to a lot more years cranking that genius brain of his! 🥂12 -
Everyone's asleep.
I'm not tired, and coding sounds like the best thing ever right now. Figured out a solution to that blocking architecture issue, too. So: headphones on, blare Amon Amarth and Disturbed, bring up editor. It's time to work on that side project!
Best night in months.7 -

First night at a camping: waking up a gazillion times at night, everything hurts and I've got a headache.
Good morning to you too 😑8 -
Late at night
"Your eyes look red." said the cop.
"Have you been smoking weed?".
"I am a developer" he replied.
Modified from Reddit2 -
I’ve been a teacher and have dated nurses but being a programmer you will never sleep at night fml .4
-
I have spent the entire night trying to debug a login function but it keeps to not work, until I discovered a typo in the username.
Good night1 -
When you remember code from last night in the middle of your day and you know exactly where you fucked up.3
-
I really hate it when I am sleepy all day, can't overcome it and so the day goes unproductive 😫😣😞😖3
-
Turning off your pc by holding down the power button is like putting yourself to sleep every night by shooting yourself in the face with a tranquilizer gun7
-
You know that you have fucked up another night when you are browsing devrant and your phone turns off the soft-color-night-mode because the sun has infact rise.
Fuck my life, another fucked up night and following day2 -
For a developer 07:23 AM does not always mean early morning, it can also mean super late night coding ;)
-
Late night coding and my last git message is "changed a shit load of stuff...don't worry I got this"
Good thing this a personal project haha1 -
Ok, it’s been a loooong fucking day.
28 hours later from starting work yesterday, preparing for a giant deployment over multiple systems, Doing deployments overnight... on a Friday night of all days and finally, finally seeing everything working is just a beautiful thing.
Good night devRant!1 -
Overheard 2 colleagues having an interesting telephonic meeting late night at my room.
Dev 1: Wait. I am trying to fix it.
Dev 2: Ok. Take your time
Dev 1: Shit. I found it. I knew I was doing something wrong here.
Dev 2: Oh. Nice. What was the bug?
Dev 1: It was a super silly mistake. Don't want to tell. Folks will laugh at me.
Dev 2: Don't worry. It happens with everyone. Come tomorrow at office, and whisper it in my ears. Noone will know.8 -
I rarely codes in the morning, it's just not the time. I can't focus.
My inspiration comes at night. That's the right moment for me. I sometimes wish that my office hour is at night 😂
How about you?13 -
Happy new year fellow coders, developers, may your next deadline be reasonable. Have a productive night with less bugs and more coffee!1
-
I get pissed when somebody takes me out of my coding mindset for something minor. A deep bubble of abstract thought gets popped so that I can be told that we'll be eating dinner in an hour. I then have to start my thought processes from scratch.
This is why I can't get any work done during the daytime, and why I do all my coding at night.
This comic depicts this issue perfectly.3 -
Damn it why is developing way more interesting at night time. Makes having a 9 - 5 really difficult4
-
Installed Windows alongside Ubuntu to play games.... but I deserve this first... Good night pc.. meet you tomorrow2
-
I don't know why but it smells really nice outside at night and it makes me really happy and relaxed :3
Heck I might just go out for a walk...2 -
Just spent writing code for 5 hours for my clg presentation!!
Never have I learnt more in one night about what I like!!!
Good night. Devs....1 -
I worked for months staying up till 3am almost every night in order to collaborate with a team on another time zone. No one ever praised me or thanked me or gave me a pat.
Yesterday two members of that team stayed up till 2am once for the first time in their lives to make a release. They got immediately labelled as the most dedicated employees.
Okay, sounds fair.7 -
... late night coding session ...
... me, tired as hell committing last porting of changes ...
... git refuses my attempt for commit ...
....
$ git vommit -am ........
It's time to go sleep when you vomit instead of commit. -
Do any of you notice changes between coding during the day and night?
I tend to listen to classical during the day, and the new DOOM soundtrack during the night to accompany my coding5 -
We are soo sorry we missed you last Saturday night a bit before eleven.
We will try again to deliver your parcel, another day (or night).
Maybe. Maybe not.3 -
The last night my boss called me at the middle of the night fo some job related tasks.
I was like: Boss! I am your employee, not your wife !1 -
Sometimes in the middle of the night I have awesome design ideas (for logos, UI, etc.), so I wake up, turn on my PC, open Photoshop/Illustrator/XD, and try to reproduce the thought making it a real thing.
Every fucking time the result is garbage…3 -
Today I decided sleep earlier and not to code late night , But when I checked time It was 12.20AM. And after that I was just checking rant, It's 1.00 AM now..☺😁2
-
Does anyone wake up in the middle of the night in a "eureka" moment. That's what happened last night. Then I overslept.6

Its 1:30am (South Africa) just had my 8 drive raid 50 fail on one of our main servers after 3 sudden drive failures at the same time after lightning struck our network and blew 2 Cisco 48 port switches...

Cause day and night
The lonely coder seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely coder seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night) -
Working late nights for the most productivity because you're a night owl and don't have to interact with a new colleague/coworker/manager/client every 5 minutes1
-
You know that feeling when you're coding late at night and you get an error that you just can't parse with your tired brain, and go FUCK IT ALL, FUCK IT ALL
I'm having that feeling right about now...6 -
When you try to sleep in because you had a long night, but that one flatmate you explicitly told to try to be quieter can't do exactly that...
When you are a programmer and a night owl and your flatmate always goes to sleep early and stands up early...
Why can't everybody be a night owl :D -
Today I explained to my wife why my night stand is a mess, and hers is clean and ordered by using the backend/frontend metaphor.
I am the backend, handling bills, bank accounts, taxes, warranties and all the paperwork.
She is my frontend, handling my social interactions.
Now she hates me, but she admitted I'm right.
She still want me to clean my night stand though.4 -
After 8 days sleeping 1 to 3 hours a night and not eating, today I slept 12h straight...
Oh man, I feel another... Even the electricity behind my eyes stopped. Me happy -
Got a 1 day of alone time :) 8 hours WFH ant then the (almost) whole evening was MINE. Guess how it went :)
Coding until 2am and falling asleep on my keyboard, waking up on a cold lappy at 5am bcz its battery died and its aluminium frame was freaking freezing.
I know right? That was an awesome evening! I've managed to catch and fix some nasty bugs!6 -
Write a piece of code that works just fine and it's fairly extensible in 20 minutes.
Then proceed to spend the rest of your night rethinking and replacing said piece of code numerous times, with slightly more elegant code.
7 hours later and I'm still not done. Although a fine way to improve your skills, I seriously need to stop doing that for every single thing I write and start managing my time better. Got lots of other stuff I need to be working on...
Surely I can't be the only one doing this4 -
(!= rant && == story)
Sooo it's 1:35AM.
Just had a call with boss to show that everything is done.
Bossy ses gud night.
Skype call ends, who the fuck is Alice starts playing in my headphones, the night is dark and I'm siting near my desk lamp, Geez lonelynes level is over 9000
In my head: wait, what now?🤨3 -
I always confuse sunday night as a weekend night and go to work on mondays with severe sleep depravation
-
It's 23:00 and I'm too fucking tired to do anything but sleep.
How the fuck you people stay up all night and even develop cool stuff while doing so is beyond my understanding.4 -
Here comes the sleep time again. Now I will think about all the amazing stuff that I can build tomorrow and make it big out there just to wake up and do the same thing again and again till I go to sleep and repeat this cycle. Peace.
-
late at night..
should I keep coding
or.. you know, me alone with dark room, internet and laptop..4 -
I hate leaving work when in the middle of something, I tend to obsess over it all night lamenting that I didn't finish.
Today I was in a similar position but I needed input from our Finance directorate before I could finish. So I sent them an email which would mean that I'd done everything possible and could go home knowing there was nothing more I could do tonight as surely no one would be working this late.
However five minutes later they replied giving me the exact details I needed.
So yet again, I'm going home frustrated.
Why can't they be that useful the rest of the day?!3 -
Programmer like working at night (at least I like working at night). Would it be cool if there is a company which the work hour will start at midnight and end at early morning?
Customer facing side of the company can work the regular hour while developer will work at night.10 -
I kinda feel the pain of the developers over at Bungie. They just had over 15h downtime of Destiny 1 and 2 and had to stay up all night to fix it.
You did a good job - have a nice weekend :)5 -

I love Google Docs.
I hate their white-only style.
I love writing at night...
So I made myself a userscript to help my eyes when working late. Unfortunately they have css classes' names constantly changing (dynamically generated) with each update of the source code and I was too lazy to go full javascript on them because it'd make a lot of "getElement..." stuff or even jQuery only to change the theme.
It wasn't like full broken page, no... only some elements were broken, but in places it'd burn your eye out in 2am when the theme is almost black.
I felt like I have to do something, because I don't want to lose the Docs at night, but writing on their email list would be like talking to the wall. Then they updated again, some elements changed again and I was like... man, fuck you!
div#doclist > div > div > div > div > div > div > div > div+div
div#doclist > div > div > div > div > div > div > div > div > div > div+div

Each day night, whenever I'm sitting to code and I feel like taking a break, this is my jam.
Brilliant lemon soda, with sugar. Helps me concentrate a lot better than coffee, or Red Bull.5 -
Devs: Early birds or night owls?
Me: Definitelly night owl, can not wake up before 10 and sometimes working till morning. I know it is bad for health but I can not help myself. Being much more creative and productive at night.12 -
Anybody else having screen addiction during the night? It ruins my day-night cycle for years now! FML
-
When I was younger my mom would tell me to clean the soda cans off my desk. Now my wife tells me to clean the beer cans off my desk. It nice to have a beer when late night programming :)
-
Night time depression+anxiety combo is super fun!
Specially that part that tells you "check your emails" and then you find like 69 more reasons to worry.
I should just call it quits and become a middle manager. Or is it too late? 😬8 -
It's amazing what a night of sleep does...
Motivation to do something:
Night time: 100%
Morning: 09 -
Had to wake up 1 hour earlier today, and the worry of that kept me awake last night. Now I sit here like a zombie, hating the day that I'm going to have, which is not full of exciting coding with headphones on and Babymetal in my ears, but full of meetings.
I already see my eyes tearing up, reality fading, a guy in a meeting asking me something and pulling me back to reality so that I could stare blankly into his eyes and reply a generic "Yeah, I agree with your proposal", so everyone will think that I'm on drugs or something.
Welp... gotta go. Fuck.2 -
Supporting a production upgrade on a Friday night without extra allowances because I screwed up the one on Tuesday night! Yay!6
-
This week we had a live production issue that our staff were catching/fixing on the fly. We're a relatively small software team without any direct external customers, so this is not too unusual.
Unfortunately, the person in charge of dealing with these issues didn't resolve it during the work week, so we were stuck with it over the weekend. Said responsible employee left at 2:30 on Friday without figuring out how we'd deal with the problem without any staff in the office to intercept problem cases. Better yet, he drove all the way back, and was there from 3:30 to 4 and promptly left again without telling the rest of the team what was going on with the production issue. We asked how it happened, what it was, etc, but didn't focus on his fix (in hindsight, a mistake).
Since it's his job, I assumed that he would let us know what was up before he left on Friday. It turns out that he never addressed the production issue at all and just decided to leave.
A junior developer and I spent two hours contacting management (who, at this time are already at home with their families) to get clearance to either shut the system off or fix it. No one wants to give it and no one that's high enough up to approve the decision is available.
In the end, we asked the weekend mechanical support team (some friends of mine) to monitor the issue and they kindly accepted.
All of this could have been avoided if my coworker had either told us his plan earlier (so we could ask about the lack of coverage), gotten approval to shut it down for the weekend, or covered his own ass before he left for the day.
Ugggh. I get that we all make mistakes, but I really hope this guy shapes up soon. -
How you guys manage to sleep at night, I can't do it till 3-4 AM.
If I try to do I'll have headache.7 -
why can't we take screenshots that include text? like a pdf. can't the os just detect where the text is off the application uses the standard library to draw out its text elements.6
-
No brain. Half 11 at night is not a good time to learn a new programming language. Please be quiet so I can get some sleep and go back to working on really boring things tomorrow without being grumpy about it

Good night Ya'll

Do you guys know the feeling when your opening PR on side project late at night..
The CI takes forever to make all the analyses and checks and you almost fall asleep because your so fucking tired? -
Had to fix all bugs of my colleague this night because our client was not happy.
Before he joined us he worked as a database admin and now he wants to learn web dev and coding. But he did so bad mistakes like endless loops or requesting api 5 times.
In so tired now, happy when its christmas -
We did over time at office yest... Dint sleep all night..
Donno why i dont feel sleepy now?😐
Ain't i supposed to be sleepy?😐😐2 -
In Morning: Let's remove this bug.
*after some time*
"Ok!!! I would solve this at night time."
Night: leave it! Let's work on another project. -
Well sometimes I need someone to pull computer out of my hands and slap my face.
5am here, spent last 10 hours writing code in java after 5 years break.
After that I deployed snapshot using maven and github actions to github package repository.
Finished first POC in one night.
Am I insane? -

DISCLAIMER: don’t read before going to sleep!
~23.15 power cut, street wide. Solved by switching back plong.
23.48 : I heard multiple times a loud sound, like if someone is trying to break a window or so. So, get out of room, go to hall, light is on there. Continue, ready with phone to call 112. Reaches living, kitchen. Finds grandfather that’s fixing something.
EDIT: 00:19 The water installation started one again I felt scared....
Awesome start of the vacation lol
Maybe I should just go to sleep.
To be honest, I was really scared after that power cut that this was a real thing. Fortunately it wasn’t... That once again proves the developer life, working at night, can be hard.7 -
How many of you get late to your office/college/school bcoz of working late night on your side project.
I missed my 1st lecture today as well...4 -
so now that ai and all that machine learning can differentiate between images n stuff, what could be the new captcha‽ 🤔5

I fucking fall in love with night every time it gets my things done! I am super amazed that any problem which I wasn't able to solve couple of hours ago seems easy as soon as world sleeps. :)

Insomnia = developer problems. My body clock is broken because of graveyard shifts. I don't like night shift. It is killing my body. Weekends no work should be night shift too.1
-
After watching YT-Videos about the Language/Framework/... , I start during a long weekends night with a fresh Spotify-Playlist. 😁
The few first days are always the most productive ones... Until you loose motivation... 😒
Do you hear music when coding? Sometimes I think, I could be way more productive when I just code without it. Do you agree?1 -
How do you force yourself to work at night?
No matter how much I try my body is stronger than my brain. I can't keep my eyes focused after 00:00 and I have to sleep. I know people who stay up and keep developing in all-nighter.
How do you this?12 -
This is what happens when it's late at night and you've been staring at something for too long... someone had to point out to me that I actually added the wrong permission :/1

When every night is a launch night... So tired.
Been trying to launch this Magento 2 application for about 3 weeks now. It's going to be the death of me. -
Finally I've got time to set up my old buddy ☺️.. slowly slowly this night getting more productive 😂🤣

Fuck... I hate these moments. Yesterday I received a new project from one of my customers... this is great, but now is 4am and I can't stop to think a concept to how implement it. I know that this will bring also a lot of money but really, I hate when I have to think also the night. Today I've school and it will be a fucking day. I can't stop to think a good concept and a connection between elements. Sorry I am just frustrated3
-
When I was testing software. We had a night crew (came in from different management) to help with the suite. They did not know the first thing about testing and would just hack away (move things) from desks and test benches.
So, every mourning involved putting back and finding your desk/bench to proper working oder so you could test.2 -
Working night has to be the most relaxing thing, I'm all alone at the office with some good relaxing classical music, nobody to interfere, good coffee and code and the average office ghost, looking out at the street below I can see the city slowly coming to life in the morning. Wish everyday could be like this 😏

Open my Windows 10 laptop and the night light is still on from last night. It's 10am.
Go to night light settings and they're disabled.
Move on and keep working.
After an hour, had enough so google the problem. Looks like it's reasonably common and and there's a registry fix to enable the settings again.
Apply settings. Go to settings and they're all enabled!
However, they don't do anything anymore. Night light is still on.
TL;DR:
Problem Night light settings widgets are disabled.
Solution: Enable night light widgets, but don't make them change night light5 -
I shot myself in the foot again!!
These incident usually happen at restless night.
Some night I become too restless so I do what any programmer would do, I program.
The "novel" idea just come up and I code until I become too tired. I usually finish the prototype of the project before I fell asleep.
I usually found out that I have reinvent the wheel the next morning! Great. My "novel" idea is not too "novel" after all.
It is hard to find the novel project these day since it is too hard to beat the decade of collective intelligence of programmer.8 -
It's 5 AM I've been awake for like 5 hours. I was asleep for 6 hours total. I'm going back to sleep the last 3 hours. It'll be 8 or 9 AM. I love being a night owl. I managed to get farther along in Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap. Personally I like a Link to the past better; there is less combat in the Minish Cap.6

SOOO last monday I got a new MS Office and Outlook in my office. It's ugly as fuck and not as functionable as the old one we got here, and I cannot install Thunderbird or so...
But at least NIGHT THEME WUUUU -
Ok, OnePlus nice fucking job!
I receive all of my notifications even during night and I lose around 4% per night - this is almost iPhone level!5 -
I put on headphones and play soothing ambient noise or epic electronic/dance music or my massive Playlist of favorite songs. Then I'd code through the night when there are no people to take me out of the zone. I go non-stop until the daylight arrives.

Tonight is coding night! Who else will be doing the same? :)
Working on a FOSS (side) project is...an additional job apparently :D2 -
Just upgraded to OxygenOS 10..... and realized it don't have Live Captions.... which is the only reason I upgraded....
I should've just kept LineageOS....3 -

Sometimes I think I am a weird nerd, one day I was writing something inside Ubuntu VM for practicing some DSP tech with Python environment on my office computer, someone DM me asking for tech support so I have to pause and go to figure it out. I wanna make some version control or backup stuffs to my little tiny cute .py files, so that I can pick it up when I was at home. And I just plugged my udisk in Ubuntu, copied those files to it, and switched USB port control permission to Windows, and finally git to commit. Actually the next time when I continued to write it at home, I hesitated for a while, should I pull it from git or just take out that udisk from my backpack? #IThinkShareFoldersAreUglyAndDirty

I'm probably going to stay up all night to finish my school project... It's not even for an grade but I would feel like shit not having finished it.
Also it's propably a fun story to tell.6 -
Redoing my website this night. Let's see how far I will get. I might post random updates just in case anyone is interested.5

Great news when the process I need to support through the night finishes early so you no longer need to work. Terrible news that I have zero chance of sleeping now as in preparation I didn't get out of bed until midday and am full of caffeine.

*coding while day* "no motivation not inspiration.. need more coffee" && *coding while night* "I can see the matrix and bend it to my will"

Taking a leave for 14 days from work, just to use my vacation days, really messes with my biorhythm :D My day/night cycle shifted about 12 hours.. Programming during the night for a freelance project, sleeping 1-2 hours during the day just to rest my eyes a bit..
I'm from Belgium, but the second developer, on the project, is from San Francisco.. It's quiet nice to have someone to talk to about the development process when every one else I know is asleep.
I'm not made for a dayjob at a desk, I need to be at home, in my bed or at my own desk, choosing my own hours, just.. Working on projects with some music, some snacks,.. Much more productive that way than, instead, being forced to work from 9am to 6pm.. You can't force creativity or inspiration
.
I slept 9 hours this week, spread over 4 days... I'm not the most healthy person, I know :D1 -
The team I am working with wants to use Slack. Slack doesn't have night mode.
I am being torn apart.5 -
2:30 AM PST.. is anyone out there still lookin' at computer screen? small experiment to see how many of us are night owls here.. ?4
-
Who else needs a snooze notifications option for the night like slack? Too many notifications at night lol2
-
Friday night : oh look at all these frameworks/package/tricks I heard about this week, time to test them !
Saturday night : well I guess I'll sleep better tomorrow...
Sunday night : fuck ! -
Oouh night, why u go so fast? I have to note all that ideas u fucking gave to me of that stupid 700 lines algorithm's issue. Be nice just fucking once or just pass it to day and let me fucking sleep!

Has anybody ever missed the xmas feast at day cause you spent your night coding or finishing a project the previous day?
Happend to me 2 years ago twice and I found myself waking up and went directly for the new years eve. -
I love spending my night not being productive because I spent the whole night looking for a bug. A bug that ended up being an eensy-teensy missing letter
-
I have to stay awake for a long ass meeting in a timezone on the other side of the planet. Most of which I'll spend staring at a meeting window doing nothing. I got pizza. How should I spend the night?3
-
So my boss offers a job which is night shift and my pay will be slightly increased too. But I would be sleep deprived then :(7
-
I'm new here and I'm scared there is no "Night Mode", since I'm looking for that for minutes and i found nothing.4
-
Sleep at night then wake up in morning thinking that I have been sleeping for a day. In normal day I'm a night owl. that confusing feeling.
