That was 7 years ago. I mean it was last edited 7 years ago when a temporary hack was created. It is now a permanent solution as nobody know what we are supposed to fix
.... Nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix. Not even clean refactored and tested code.13 -
So what do you do for a living?
- I fix shit. While i do that, i break some other shit and then i fix that shit.2 -
Boss: you must fix this bug asap
Dev: I need more time for a proper fix so I will just hack a workaround
Boss: yeah, whatever. You can find a proper fix after the release.
... this happend several years ago and the workaround is still in place...8 -
I was just trying to fix a "bug" for 2 hours and then found out I only had to "clean" to project..6

*Doing a Peer Code Review of someone senior to me*
Me: This fix doesn't look like it will work, but maybe I don't understand. How does this fix the defect?
Senior Dev: *Blinks* It works on my machine
Me: But how does it work?
Senior Dev: It works when I run it on my machine...
Me: Do you know if this will fix the issue?
*Silence*
Never seen QA punt an issue back to development so fast.7 -
Hehe, just inherited a bit of JavaScript code. Ashamed to say I physically lol'd a little :) Guess I have an easy "bug" to fix.6

If I tell normal people I'm a computer programmer, I always get asked to fix something hardware related.
If I tell normal people I'm a software engineer, I get a "that's awesome" and don't get asked to fix anything. I'm sticking with this option.3 -

M: I am. Can't troubleshoot a computer with that little of info.
P: If I bring it to you will you fix it for me?
M: No.
P: What if burritos are involved?
M: I would consider it
This. This is how conversations should go when somebody asks us to fix their computer.8 -

People on github opening issues saying shit like "aye, your extension crashes. Please fix or I'll uninstall. Thanks.". How am I supposed to fix an error I know nothing about? Error message? Extension list? Stack trace? Steps to reproduce? Nope. Nothing.

Hey. I have a code that hits API to get details and multithreading is implemented. Can you just change the URL formed to hit Api?
Me
Yeah sure why not.

After some time I discover that the initial code itself wasn't working 😐
I realise i need to fix code, fix multithreading and then make the URL changes.

Was trying to fix my old MacBook Pro (From about 2011, it's served me well, and I ain't letting it die!)

Manager: "<third-party vr app> isn't working. Think you could fix it by tomorrow?"
Me: "I can't fix it without the source code."
Manager: "Didn't you install it?"
Me: "I did, but I'd need <third-party>'s source code if you want me to make changes and that problem would probably take at least a day to fix."
Manager: "Can't believe you don't have the source code. Aren't you supposed to have your code available?"

As a senior developer, I introduced a bug in the hiring system at the company I worked at and it took HR nearly 2 years to fix it.
Bug: Every candidate I interview on Wednesday between 12:30 PM and 4:15 PM gets selected irrespective of performance.
Impact: 270 candidates got a job
1st Fix [1.5 years in]: Add multiple developers to conduct a single interview (still did not fix it completely after all I was a senior developer)
2nd Fix [2 years in]: Removed me from the hiring committee
3rd Fix [though was not needed but for HR's extra safety]: Started recording all interviews
It was a good time.3 -
Ugh, ansible and yml formats. I thought to fix a small issue fast and commit it directly.. but noooo2

Me : I found this code issue, I think we need to fix it
PO: does it affect the user?
Me: not really but we can make it better
PO: do you have a defect for it in *insert issue tracker here*
Me: no, I just noticed it
PO: is there an IM ticket for it?
Me: I don't think so
PO: is this issue already in production?
Me: possibly. Yes. That's why I was wondering if we should fix it.
PO: okay then we will fix it in the 3rd release from now if you still remember it by then.5 -

Oh man... I fucked up. I spent almost 36-40 hours in 3 days trying to fix a bug, that was quite literally a single, two word fix.
Change `Key` to `Value.State`
I burned that time into the weekend. I'm both satisfied and dissatisfied with this decision.11 -

Php array methods, all of them, or should i say hash methods
They should fix them. I mean they should fix placing of callback and subject params, because.

Spent 18 hours debugging and finding a fix for a critical bug, casually told about the fix to a senior programmer and left home. Couldn't go to office the next day and what I see on the day after that is endless mails praising the senior guy for fixing the bug. He stole my fix!4

After wasting most of the afternoon trying to fix Visual Studio, I can honestly say is is the worst IDE I have ever had the misfortune to use.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I see people say shit like "fix it now" when a bug pops up.
Like bitch go fix it since you're such a fucking intelligent individual. You can't? Well then, shut the fuck up and let them fix it. They're human too, ya know2 -
I know whats wrong, I know how to fix it, but it would require too much energy so trying to find a different way to fix it1

The developer's conundrum:
Do I fix the issue before a user encounters it...
Or do I wait for a user to contact me and then quickly fix it so they think I am super helpful.6 -
Monday morning: The last straw.
After talking about in a previous rant about how my client wants to fix bugs that keeps popping out after bug fix.
Today I discovered, that all C-levels, worked all Saturday to "fix my code" because it "didn't work" and we "needed bug fixes not pretty things".
The app version I was working on for the last week is gone. Without mentioning that their "CTO" wrote a fucking crappy code to disable features that I added, breaking the build step.
This shit is enough for me, I'm done!3 -

I put this picture as my whatsapp profile picture to stop the countless amount of how do I fix this device questions.
Who else here gets irritated when family and friends asks you to fix their computer or printer or ask you what device they should buy2 -
Maybe not worst, but most frustrating. One of the systems I helped maintain at my first job had a few different bugs that caused bad data in the database. The "solution" to the problem was to write SQL queries to directly fix the production data. This would take one member of our team (it rotated weekly) about an hour every day to fix because there were literally dozens of these errors.
All the devs knew that we could identify the root cause and fix it in, probably, 3-4 days tops. Management would never approve the time because it would take longer to fix the root cause than it took to fix the data.
I worked at that company for 7 years. The bug was there when I came on, and it was there when I left.2 -
I fucking hate frontend development

Today I had a client raise a high defect directly with my boss’s boss. I got called into a meeting and was told
I needed to fix it immediately.
I looked and realized it was in their code and not our component. I told them as much. They asked me if I would still fix it. I refused. Told them it’s not my component. Fix your own problems.
Sat their as my boss’s boss asked them how they functioned if they didn’t even understand their own component. Feels good man. All I could do is smile at them trying not to laugh.1 -

"I don't like it. Fix it."

I feel so stressed at work right now.
QA signed off on a fix I made, I signed off on a fix I made, and other people signed off on the fix, but it gets out to production and people find it's broken, I get the finger pointed at me.
It's really stressing me out, especially when our client needs custom logic to make their use cases work, and the BE and FE are scrambling to make it work.
It's really affecting the way I work and I don't know what to do. I talked to my boss and he just tells me to "stay positive". Someone please help me.11 -
A few months back, my Dad's friend (mother of a 10th grade student) asked me for help on her daughter video editing school assignment because I study 'computers'.
Me on the outside: 'I am sorry, I wouldn't be of much help here as I have zero experience with video editing'
Me on the inside: 'I am sorry, I design and develop software. I am not an all-knowing genius that knows everything even remotely connected to computers.'1 -
My manager has explained in detail to me how to fix the problem I'm having. I know how to fix the problem. I just don't have permission on our servers to change the settings I need to.

Hi everyone.

This temporary hack will just temporarily fix this problem. We will come back and actually fix the problem later.
We never come back to fix it later. This shitty hack I made in less than a day that fixed the problem for the day "fixed" the problem for the next year.
Lesson learned that temporary structures and side projects will be there forever. Make them right the first time.1 -
Gah! Person in work has an issue I suggest a fix and even give them the bleeding code. For them just to say it won't work due to x y and z, I know it will work heck I use this 'fix'. Then later someone who has been there longer gives them the same fix and they are suddenly all appreciative. Ffs wouldn't be so annoyed if this was the first time this has happened.1

Note to self, don't fix a minor bug that will not effect the demo right before the live demo. My program that was working great didn't work anymore during the demo because of my quick bug fix I figured I had a few minutes to add to my code.1

Check out my current scenario:
I have to show some progress in fixing a bug to management in the morning..
I tried to sleep early, so that I cud fix it before the standup..
but I couldn't sleep, so I thought of fixing the issue now itself..
Sat down to fix, got stuck with a stupid blocking issue, did all the wrong things to debug it, wasted 3 hours, found the issue fix (not related to the main bug at all)
nd now going to sleep..
It's like:

Follow up to my other rant https://devrant.com/rants/4994932/...
I have finally fixed the bug i couldnt fix for over several weeks. I was just missing a fucking if statement check. Not expecting this to work, i compiled, tested and it worked perfectly on the first fly.
Immediately i shit you not have i broken down crying. Sobbing in tears. Uncontrollably crying down on my table for several minutes and cant refocus to continue coding. I have NEVER cried because of a fucking bug fix! But i have also NEVER had a problem so much difficult that i needed several weeks to fix it!

Client wanted me to implement a "fix" for the site beeing to large on mobile. He had to scroll too long. I implemented a quick fix and turned the biggest list into a carousel with slick slider (awesome 5-minute-fix btw.)
But it depends on jQuery. I feel so dirty now. The sites amount of JavaScript is three times bigger now, too. Please, don't judge me. 😩2 -

To be honest the exact bug I don't remember. I do recall that it had something stupid I had been trying to fix to get nodejs working on a raspberry pi. I finally figured it out and managed to get a simple rest server going. After hours of trying to fix what might now seem insignificant, I was not only relieved that I got it working, but also thrilled that I kept at it and managed to fix it.

How do I explain this to my client? 😂😂3 -

I thought my project would break on an edge case and I would have to spend 2-3 hours rewriting some code to fix it. Turns out I had already thought about that edge case when implementing that functionality (which was like 6 months ago), so nothing breaks and I don't have to fix anything. What a pleasant surprise!3

Today is one of those magnificent days for my code. One of those days where I stumble up on the weirdest bugs and pull a fix out of my hat barely looking at any doc. One of those days where I find out there is a very tricky flaw in our project design and yet I end up finding an elegant solution to circumvent future problems. One of those days where I find the informations I want even though the documentation is the worst I've ever seen.

- Python
- SQL, mostly.4 -

So I went to a car repair center and asked if they could fix my bike. They said they could but they won't. This is outrageous, obviously a bike is less complicated than a car and they can actually fix it, they just won't because it's "not their job". Unbelievable!
//This didn't really happen of course
//people don't think this is acceptable, but if I won't fix their laptop they are surprised and act the same way. I study ICT (embedded software engineering and cyber security, but they don't understand that so ICT it is) so I HAVE to fix their laptop....

At the end, i realize that i fix on my local and we both laugh at it. Just kidding, he never contact me again after the project.2

I love it when I manage to fix one bug and then 9 new appear, like a Hydra. Mythology at its finest.3

So some other dev in team changed something, and it broke the tests that I wrote. Ideally the dev should be responsible for fixing the tests too when I communicated this in the team channel my manager pinged me and asked me to fix it urgently. I'm already on PIP and wth is this? am I suppose to fix these tests too?6

Working on a platform with very few users and developers kinda sucks. There is only like 5 forums about this platform and it has less than one than a 1000 threads. Stack overflow has nothing on it so that sucks. I am trying to fix this weird bug and I cannot find anything to fix it. Guess I will call it a feature.1

I just saw a rant about a fix price website request and I wonder if anyone creates websites for a fix price in some cases.2

This code is huge ! THAT MEANS IT HAS HUGE BUGS !

Basically the reason I want to work on a big codebase one day is to be able to scream that
Winks if you get the reference (just so you know, I didn't read it fully)2 -
Yesterday was "but you are Russian" day. It was somehow decided by people in my office, that Russians are the fixers. Basically its the regular flow: Fix the wifi, install me a Windows, Fix VM image, fix my sd card coz its fucked up, I have issues with my hotspot, air conditioner is not cooling enough. But whats weird... Those people are fucking developers themselves!! Wtf?! I got a call from US team (I'm in Israel) and they wanted me to fix their laptop over the phone!!!!!! FUCK!!😕

Since I can't work without internet on my laptop, I started thinking of a comparison I could give, to clarify that me being a programmer, doesn't mean I can fix anything that uses electricity.
My answer so far:
"Asking me to fix that, is like trying to ask an accountant to go be a lawyer for some criminal."1 -
Spent like 2 days trying to fix a problem that caused failing tests and outdated test lib...
But just realized I could just fix it with a simple hack... basically a test mode flag2 -

My fingers travel a little bit too much on the keyboard.
I think I may get an Ergodox-ez and fix this by force!1 -
I know using Composition is a good way of reusing components. Works like a charm and sends data down the tree like a waterfall.
But in our codebase it's applied to bugs. Fix one, get two more, fix two get four more.
I want to cry :'(( -
I have a longtime friend who is looking for input about the broken candidate process and how to fix.5

don't you just love it when you have to fix a system that consists on unnecessary junk code, horrible/lack of indentation, no documentation and the clients says "I don't know what happened fix it and I'll post you good"
I mean, I live for this shit man! -

In the spirit of this https://m.youtube.com/watch/... I have a question...how many of my fellow Rantsters can relate? I feel like I see so many posts about not being able to fix cars, build computers, and in general fix things that arent software, and I mean no offense by this. But, I think a lot of people sell themselves short because they aren't a "professional" I'm pretty sure anyone who can build an application can fix most anything...you just need to read the docs and debug it!

A lot of times I read, that most people here are not willing or allowed to use jquery as a short fix for problems.
As someone who is working on big projects, I can say, I've used jquery a bunch of times as a workaround for problems I am not able or allowed to fix on my own. And I am a Java-Dev, so...1 -
Has anyone else lost all compatibility with Netbeans 10 and javafx on linux? I can't for the life of me get any packages to work together to fix the problem. Even installing "Netbeans8" and jdk8 and openjfx8 doesn't fix the problem.2

I had to fix errors on my seagate 1tb expansion drive. Not only did it take 16 hours but also it failed to fix everything. I had to repair partition and format to ext4. NTFS errors can't be fixed on Linux. Fuck exFAT and M$.2

When something is still broken after I fix it
When fixing one bug creates two more bugs
When I am too lazy to do anything at all
When I have to fix bugs in code I did not write
Whether the sun is shining or not,
whether it is hot outside or cold,
I always feel the same...1
