Based on popular demand, we're proud to introduce a basic image repost detector on devRant!
Right now it uses very simple hashing to see if an exact copy of an image was posted recently. If it was, then we display an error and we don't allow the image to be posted.
This is experimental so if you experience any issues with it please let me know.60 -
I just started working on a little project to browse devrant from terminal. It converts images to ascii art!43

Me: PHP, please load the images.
PHP: No.
Me: Come on PHP, the deadline is tonight.
PHP: Haha nope.
Me: What if I swap the libraries?
PHP: Still no.
Me: What if I add a symlink?
PHP: No. And also I hate you.
Me: *gives up and sends an email to the client saying we have to delay the release*
PHP: lololol jk here's the images haha

Making a game with my friend. He drew shitty images (sprites) and I made a shitty game. We had so much fun!4

Hi everyone,
Over the last couple of days we experienced an issue posting images on devRant posts and comments. This issue should now be fixed.
Apologies for the delay, it to address, it took some digging and we had some alerting that failed that would have helped quickly identify the source of the issue, but unfortunately that part of the alerting wasn't working as expected.
Despite the issue being fixed, there is a bit of additional maintenance that will take place to prevent it from occurring in the future. There could be a couple of minutes of downtime today, March 13 at around 10pm EST, but I'm hoping that can be avoided. I will update in the comments on this rant.
Lastly, and unrelated to this issue, an academic research team has been working on a project involving devRant/types of content posted, and would appreciate feedback and help with a short survey they put together for anyone who is interested: https://devrant.com/rants/3923796/...
Thank you again for the patience and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
p.s. attached is a relevant meme, according to some people, who thought/hoped this was a feature :)16 -
When your client complains there site is slow and you find that they have added 80 full resolution images at 6000x4000 pixels to the home page!11

So I've been trying to copy images in an existing, writable directory. Here is a Patrick meme I created to avoid getting insane.4

Hey everyone - in case it isn't obvious, unfortunately due to the major S3 outage, no images can currently be uploaded :/
Sorry about that.4 -
Manager: The site I loading too slow. How can we improve this?
Me: *f5 & look at the network log* the server is taking too long to respond some image requests. We could encode them into the Html to have them all delivered in a single request.
Manager: GTMetrix says we need to compress the images.
Me: *reads GTMetrix report* we would only have a 150kb improvement. It won't even be noticeable.
Manager: If the images take a long time to load, it means that they're too big, right?
Me: or the server is taking a long time to respond our request for them, which is the case.
Manager: compress the images and upload them.
Me: *compresses the images and uploads them* done.
Manager: I don't see any improvement.
Me: if only there was someone who could have predicted such an outcome...1 -
Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.
Me: As mentioned earlier, all images are just placeholders. Continues demo.
Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?

Some companies have images of their tech support personnel in their websites.
They show you Steve and Michael......but in reality you get Rajhit and Pakalu13 -
Just a heads up since sometimes these things get missed on new devRant version releases: you can now download images attached to rants by tapping on the "share" icon on the top right of a rant and then selecting "save image". The image will be saved into the gallery on your device.
We've also improved Facebook and Twitter sharing.
Let us know if you have any questions!3 -

Boss: Client wants those stockphotos for the frontpage.
Me: ok. Please license them and let me know. I will upload them to the page.
Boss: How does that work then?
Me: you have to buy the five credit package. Here is the link...
Boss: (no response)
...few days later...
Boss: please remember to upload those images...
Me: well ok. Did you buy them?
Boss: isn't that your thing?
Me: I don't understand. You had all the info. You new where to buy them. You knew what images to buy since the client sent the preview versions. What do you need? ...and why didn't you tell me that you were waiting for my input? I was the last one to reply to this conversation.
Boss: i don't want to buy the wrong images.
Me: just buy the ones the client chose.
Boss: I don't want to look up the email he sent them in.
Me: I don't understand. I directly replied to that mail. It is in the same conversation.
Boss: ok.
...day later...
Boss sends me mail with images attached.
Boss: are those the right images?
Me: well yes. Those are the ones the client sent. I don't have more information than you.
(Me looking at the attachments and finding them in the smallest resolution available.)
Me: why did you download the images in the smallest resolution? It does not make any difference in price.
Boss: well I thought they were not needed in a bigger size.
Me: why do you make my options intentionally smaller? I am the guy doing frontend.
..please give me the login info for the stock account so I can download the images in a better resolution.8 -

So nearly done with the work app and I need these images scaled accurately (it's for comparing pupils) my problem is I'd normally ask my brother to make the images but he is busy with uni for the next few weeks.
I'm just wondering is there a tool I can use that can rescale images (I have images from the iPhone app, and I gotta say I had to add in % changes despite the proper dpi sizing), I'm looking at the Android documentation but what's funny is in the listed resolutions OnePlus 3 wasn't included (along with some other newer resolutions) lol, and also Wikipedia for OnePlus 3 has the width and height switched (for some reason the author imagined the phone is also in landscape lol).
So do you guys know of something I can use? Programming is one thing but designer is another :/4 -
Has any of your clients asked you to disable inspect element and right click on webpages to protect their COPYRIGHT images from being downloaded...19
-
So working on the Android for work, and go to add in images for parts of the app. I add in images and load the app up and it crashes, I thought hmm maybe I missed something for the imageview.
The exception was an out of memory exception and from looks of it, it exceeded my phone memory by quite a bit (OnePlus 3 has 8gb LOL), I was stumped since I don't typically run into this.
Turns out this time around it wasn't my fault lol, I had some images outsourced to a company our company uses for doing design work and well Android doesn't like 2000 x 2000 super high quality for logos.
I mean sure it's good it's high quality but to have 3 images eat up a lot of memory (I assume my phone won't allocate all 8gb to one app lol).2 -
Hi, some time ago I was looking for a good app on Play Store and Bam! I found devRant. I opened it and the first rant I saw was from aswinmohanme. It was an image of Marilyn Monroe, but somehow created with circles, hope you understand me. I thought this is a great opportunity to test my dev skills so I opened Visual Studio and started coding. Today, after 2 days od work, I finally done it. It was written in C# and I have to say, I'm very proud od my child :^)

Fun fact: half the modern Web 3.0 or whatever version number it has now.. requires JavaScript.. to show images.5
-
In one of my first jobs i developed an (ugly and heavly under-payed) e-commerce/media platform for a customer.
That customer was constantly making fun of his bald partner telling how he was gay, liked dicks, etc., drawing dicks and bananas as sample website logos or uploading dildo/penis images as images, he was always like this.
Once the website was ready for production i removed all the "testing" posts and images and told the client to insert some real content and alert me when it was ready for release.
Well some time after the release i got a call from that client, for the first time he was serious:
C: Hi, why there are dildo images on the server? (the website in production was full of dildo/penis images instead of actual product images, he even photoshopped the head of his partner on a penis and uploaded it!!!)
R: ehm... i told you it was on production and to stop uploading bad content....
C: Ummm ok, please fix it immediatly, thanks!3 -
Customer called, said they needed help deleting some images and that they'd mail me a list.
Today I received a package with 20 A4 pages containing nothing but crossed over thumbnails.
I've seen images in .docx files attached to emails, .bmp files, pdf's and zip files with images before...
But literally mailing thumbnails, that's a first..

Got to love Ubisoft web devs.
Their new "30 days of Ubisoft" calendar has the browser download 30 images of closed numbered boxes, 30 images for the hover state of each box and another 30 for the open state. Granted, the images aren't big, but hasn't anybody heard of custom fonts and CSS3?
Oh, and the "surprises" have already been leaked on reddit, gj on keeping hints in the page source.

An undetectable ML-based aimbot that visually recognizes enemies and your crosshairs in images copied from the GPU head, and produces emulated mouse movements on the OS-level to aim for you.
Undetectable because it uses the same api to retrieve images as gameplay streaming software, whereas almost all existing aimbots must somehow directly access the memory of the running game.12 -
About 3 years ago, my girlfriend had this laptop that she got from her University. She had to give the laptop back to get reset, but didn't want to lose all of her data on it, and a backup would be around 750GB.
So I suggested that I would backup the laptop (was thinking to just dd an image and go from there). So I plugged in my mobile USB and external hard drive, and started the imaging process. Given the amount of data and setup, the process should have taken about 5hours. So we left it there for 5h.
Please be mindful that at this stage in my life I knew very little about boot processes, oses, and hardware.
5h after. The laptop screen is black and it ain't responsive. Not sure what happened, the dd process was completed, but the laptop refused to boot into windows. Tried a number of boot tools, and spent a crazy night hacking at the machine. But the university had some of sort of fail safe to not allow anyone to boot into windows if someone opened bios without entering a password. Whatever this was, I spent over 12h trying to either open mount the windows partition with a Ubuntu usb or mount the corrupt dd image on my laptop.
Long story short, after throwing at it a number of fixes. I was able to mount the image, copy out all of her personal data, and reinstall a new version of Windows on her laptop. The university didnt understand why the laptop was already reset. She still mentions this to me anytime I want to take a "custom approach" to software lol2 -

Several months of work got deployed and suddenly the app stops displaying user submitted images. No new changes that looks related went live and the images seem to be stored and read by the code. Nothing looks odd about it other than images not displaying. 4 hours of frustrated developers later an accidental newline at the top of a routing file is removed and all is fine.1

When I was really new to JavaScript, I wanted to create an image gallery with images which I stored in a MySQL database. Well, I did not really had a clue how to load all the image sources into my JavaScript to load the images. I also didn't know much about fetching an endpoint of my website to get the data asynchronously.
I also wasn't a good database architect at that time and my database had an image table wich was for the gallery. Within this table there were multiple columns for one image slider (there should be multiple sliders on one page in the gallery (I know... 🤢)).
So I ended up writing an PHP loop wich printed Javascript loops for each row in my images table. Within my JavaScript loop I created the sliders and set the images.
In my defense I can say: It worked. 😅
It hurts to remember this. And I hope you won't judge me.2 -
I appreciate if someone explains this to me:
Designers ask that we put three images in a grid layout on an Android device so that they can compare which image looks better, and guess what is changed in theses three images: font size changes one point in each image.
My question is: Is this normal? Designers need to see it on a screenshot to be able to decide which fits better?9 -
Client said the images need to be responsive and go full width.
Told her that would make the images massive and we should have a limit in height a cropping enabled.
She told me it should look nice with full width images uncropped.
Fucking designers said the same fucking thing.
Client today: Hey images are huge. Make sure they look nice.
*sigh*8 -
So I’ve requested images for the dark mode because the existing images are very bright and look bad when dark mode is enabled.
After a few days the designer says that it’s done and sends me the figma link.
And what do I see there? He added the screens but in dark mode with the same bright images! 😂
I mean… even if he misunderstood me… doesn’t it look odd to him?4 -

So, I recently added a new feature to our app which allows the user to rotate/crop the image before being uploaded to our server, and we have an option to upload pdfs as well, so when I gave this feature (rotate/crop image) out for testing, the tester in our organization tells me where's the option to rotate the pdf? And I'm like where have you seen someone rotating a pdf? He's like that's the reason why we need to have it. And now the PM wants me to add that in the next release, after explaining them for 30 mins that pdfs don't rotate, they tell me to do a proper research on it and then revert. 🙃3

Hi devrant developers
I can develop a function that find duplicate images and forbid them to post again.
I saw some images more than 4 times ...8 -
Dear client,
Please carefully look at the image size recommendations as it makes your images look like shit. I don't have time to get each image and resize them in Photoshop to make them look decent... I've done my job to constrain the images to make them fit in the box now it's your turn to resize them to fit them in the box correctly -
So I start developing a site for a client and request for the site assets.. Client provides 100+ 25mb sized .tiff images.... For the web! I tell him that the page load times will be insanely slow and I explain the need for optimized images.. He doesn't care.. So I upload the images and he flips out at the performance hit, complaining about the slow load times.. Here I am sitting and optimizing the images when I should be home :/1

@dfox I am having issues posting rants with images! I am getting an internal server error. Can you check what's happening?8

Worst experience: I needed a designer to create some images of a person looking cross-eyed, it was to be put next to images of a phone to symbolize looking at the phone, I drew the images and explained what I wanted.
...sigh he came back to me in two days with a person with googly eyes LOL
I was so confused and since I got the images on the way home, I showed my brother who is also a designer the images I wanted and told him I wanted a person with eyes crossed as if he was staring at something, and he agreed it was odd
He eventually changed the images but even if you were to google crossed eyes you wouls get the meaning, maybe next time i'll print out google images -
Optimizing images on a client site and I hope the server doesn't crash (I'm not hosting the site).4

💧
There was a 1 second delay when loading images on home page with a bunch of hot model babes in a masonry grid
Why? 💧💧
Maybe pagination is fucked. Lets reduce it from 100 per page to 10.
Still same shit.
What do you think why this could be?
Comment below 👇 right now
(The images im loading are just dummy images from unsplash)
I tried using rxjs. Observables. Flatmaps. Custom array push. Array loop. Change detection to update UI. Chatgpt.
Nothing
Every time i switch tab and come back then theres another second of delay with blank page before content appears
Wtf???
Turns out -- unsplash api was returning me 6K to 8K Fucking images. HEAVY. HEAVY FUCKING IMAGES. and i was apparently displaying 6000x8000 px images, 20 times per page. Thats a lot of fucking pixels! I reduced it with ?w=500 in unsplash api at the end and magically there is no delay now and everything works in an instant.
Fuck off6 -

Have you ever come across any? cus i'm not ready to implement that from scratch. Thankee2 -

I'm dreaming of a web language that is as close to the English language as possible.
Imagine:
<html>
nav bar with 5 links
slider with 3 images that runs automatically
Section with 3 images next to each other
Paragraph with first word in red
Footer with menu and sign up form
</html>
This would be the shit!6 -
Me: [Talking about how you are able to create AMI images on AWS using Packer without relying on public AMI images]
Ops: Yeah our AWS version doesn't have that.

Instagram "personal brand revolving code" checklist:
1. Quirky Hello World captions
2. Always has a mug of coffee
3. Code in background (usually HTML) with a pop open terminal showing the file directory to show that they know how to use the command line.
4. quirky pseudocode (usually a while loop) on there shirt.
5. Starting aimlessly on a laptop in places that don't make sense to work.
Seriously, Instagram is the worst place to have your personal brand for stuff like this. -
Hello everyone,
I'm here to ask your help, you can do it.
In my about-to-open company we're gonna build custom WorkStations and similar PC, but up to now we have no images of them.
As we don't want to use images from google or other public sources, can you please comment with your best computer?
Thank you again to whoever wants to help!10 -
Has anyone worked with html2canvas?

I've been using Google Photos to serve images for clients E-Mail Templates since its a one time payment and I didnt want to continually pay for a server and storage.
Anyone knows if that violates any Google ToS since i use it pretty much commercially?
I couldnt find anything about that and was thinking about migrating the images to AWS7 -
Some iPhones take live photos png.mov or something like that and when they are uploaded in my system part of them turn grey. Has anyone had luck just taking a frame from such a file?1

Kinda weird posting it directly after @OmerFlame but…
JoyRant has image upload now.
With image preview. Great idea, no worries about uploading your dick pics by accident, now. Forgot the name of the guy who suggested it 😄
And there is a macOS version in TestFlight, too.

Thanks to @OmerFlame for SwiftRant, btw! 😄1 -

God I hate people...
Was asked to change a few things on one of our websites including shortening a sliders height to give more room for stuff of the page, I did this and now they are complaining about the images being cut off at the bottom. No fucking shit! You wanted it shorter!1 -
Artsy friend asked me to make a program to auto add images from folder and layout in refBoard.
Spend time figuring out how the author scales images and setting the XML up. Post wip online and someone asked why not use pureRef... Does all that stuff and more built in...
Thankfully only spent a few hours on it heh... -
Hey, dumb question: How do I include images in my Markdown post in Hugo? And where to put the image?4

Just like last week's rant with developers, I've never really had any huge arguments with designers. Most of them been pretty cool, and if anything, I learned quite a few things from them that you would never learn as a developer.
Although minor, at most I had an issue with a designer was how they were adamant about not reducing the file size of images. They were arguing that it would make the site look terrible. -
What is the best way to easily move files (text, documents, images...) Between android phones and PC (Linux)4

I was wondering why all images on a rant were a grey ghost silhouette until I stumbled upon another rant with a different aspect ratio image. It's not a ghost, just a fuck up of images.
You had me spooked there devRant. -
ML and NLP people I need some help bc I’m stupid
I want to build a model that is trained on a set of images and captions for those specific image.
The images are of a single person in different positions and different environments.
How do I train something like this? Do I use an object recognition model to understand what’s in the image as it’s features?1 -
Dear @dfox,
I expect clicking on images from RantList page to open the image itself, just like how it behaves on gifs.
Clicking on text will open the rant,
Or fine clicking on images or gifs will open rant and there user can open image or gif1 -
