"We need you to build a feature on our website to stop people taking screenshots. I can use the print screen key and then easily print out our website design. You need to make the site design harder to copy".
This is an extract from a recent client email I received. To say I'm in shock is an understatement.26 -
Team Lead: Anyone has any concern on their tasks? I'll see what I can do to help.
Me: Yeah I'm afraid I would not be able to finish my task on time because of its complexity.
Team Lead: Try harder.
What's the point of asking?11 -
I’m making a puzzle game! Cool!
Concept - done
Mechanics - done
Art - done
Ui - done
Puzzles - uhhh... this is harder than expected.31 -
Guys I just wanted to thank you for giving me motivation! I suffer from chronical depression and it's really hard for me to start something and even harder to continue. But by reading your posts I get joy and motivation! #thankyou #motivation #devRantsaveslifes7

We now have around 10cm snow and it make my way to college around 300% harder,
But I don't care, because this looks fucking beautiful.
Also, I can approve this famous saying about German trains,

Dear Dad,
'Long Press' doesn't mean 'Pressing it harder'... they are two different things..

That sad moment when you realize that your salary is less than other employees, the most sad is you work harder and you have more skills.
Life is not fair.6 -
There is no reason for any developer to not know git well. No fucking reason. Stop making shit harder for everyone by being like “oh I’m not the keenest on git” STFU and just learn it better you pussy.28

And then I asked myself: "How should I make my life harder?"
I chose react/angular.
Every node developers story.8 -
is it just me or is finishing the rest of 10% of the project much more fucking harder than finishing 90%?12

No boss... For the fucking millionth time: unit tests are not a waste of time.
You keep testing everything manually and hoping that you tested everything every time and praying that there are no bugs IS THE FUCKING TIME WASTE
My boss just can't fucking wrap his head around automated tests... I'm trying hard... Gonna try harder...6 -
Someone who noticed that I do programming as a hobby and therefore set harder work for me in class. He also encourages my side projects and at the moment is helping me build a native app for the school :)2

Pro tip: As great as your product is, it's 1000x harder to pitch to my boss when it has a goofy-ass name.
Me: Hey boss, I came across some new software that'll help manage our mission critical database system.
Boss: Oh yeah, what's it called?
Me: WoolySocksDB Enterprise Edition
Boss: 😐... No.4 -
Alright, feature is starting to work, let's go to bed before 2am!
Finally in bed.
"So this stuff is awesome but lets go to sleep now and work on it tomorrow...
....
....
....
Waaaaait, I could add this other feature but I'd be harder......."
My brain is running at full speed at 10 to 2am now 😅3 -
Just surfin aroung in C# job offers and found this gem, a joboffer from a german bank:
"Sie verfügen über Erfahrung in der Entwicklung individueller .NET-Lösungen auf Basis von C "Hashtag"."
which translates to
"... and you have excperience with C "hashtag"..."
Lol'ed harder then I should have...2 -
The best is to not even start it.
It is harder to stop, once you're doing it.
Like drugs, don't do drugs, kids.7 -
Everytime I look at an open source project code, I realize how bad I am and that I must work harder in order to take part in such amazing projects.2

So many bad dev habits...
But the one that results in the biggest headaches afterwards?
Me, when given a problem and being asked an estimated time: 'This shouldn't be too hard, gimme X to do it', only to later find out it's way harder than i imagined.4 -
Non-dev thing that made me a better dev?
Music, and trying to learn music theory. I was never very good at it, still am not, but the harder I try at this, the easier programming becomes...7 -
"There’s a subtle reason that programmers always want to throw away the code and start over. The reason is that they think the old code is a mess. […] The reason that they think the old code is a mess is because of a cardinal, fundamental law of programming: It’s harder to read code than to write it." - Joel Spolsky8

The "explain x to an x years old boy/girl" questions are easy yet tricky.
Interviewer: Explain machine learning to an 8th years old kid.

Interviewer: The kid is asleep. Try harder.4 -
"C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg."

Just because our classes are online now doesn't mean you should make your exam literally 5x harder than the in class one was you fucking bow tie wearing penis head looking cunt.
There's a literal global pandemic going on for fuck sakes. It's not like we asked to have it online fucking jackass.2 -
My friend sent me this and I don’t think I ever laughed harder at a dev joke.
Aussie people make everything funnier, idk why (if it’s a repost then sorry)4 -
this hurts. it really hurts. hey can you make x using <buzzword> with <buzzword> for less than minimum wage?
how about i hit you in the x using my <hard object> with <harder object> for free?2 -

Someone will have a hard time taking this non-existant tram out of service, and probably even harder to make the insurance company pay for nothing... oh well.8

So I would really like to see a devrant like app where devs can share design ideas for problems that are greater than a function call, or topical questions found on stack overflow.
As I have gotten older, I have realized that actual implementation is typically easy, the design approach is typically harder to get right from the first go, so open critique can be very useful.6 -
Just finished making the interface for my app in WPF only to find out that it will be waaay harder to plug it to WPF than I thought.
In fact, it would be easier to just remake it from scratch in WPF - which I'm planning on doing when I get some free time.
Don't you just hate when that happens?
..eh, at least it looks somewhat good.8 -
My tab key now requires a harder press than it used to earlier. STUPID MACBOOK. This minor inconvenience is a really major annoyance.10

Today I learned that in Unix/Linux or most command lines, when user is asked to choose an option as [Y/n], the uppercase one signifies the default.
I thought they made it a little harder as a security feature to prevent accidental keypress, and I’m shift+Y ing this for the last eight freaking years!!!!! Every time!17 -
Me: soooo can you get this done by next week?
Other dev: well who knows what rabbit hole I'll fall down. There's no way to tell.
Me: can you just avoid falling down a rabbit hole? We have a deadline.
Other dev: oh ya there's no way to know for sure.
Me: ....... Can you please try harder
Other dev: I'm trying I can't.
Me: ................6 -
I like to play this game called "what's the absolute smallest amount of work I can do without getting fired", and it's a lot harder to play computer games in the office without the "getting fired" bit...12

I do think C# is the best language going. It's basically got everything, and VS is, weirdly for a Microsoft product, among the best IDEs. You get to thinking that it's actually harder to write unorganised code than not with it: it becomes difficult to imagine writing messy, repetitive or spaghetti code in C#.
Then you use Unity.24 -
Bout to go on a first date with this girl I been vibing with for a week and I am like getting seriously anxious like wtf. There’s no bug harder than dealing with what’s going on my head rn. Pray for me 🙏🏾26

Oooh what I hate it..... Timezones... Who really came up with that shit? GMT, UTC, CET and garbage like that. And then also the DST crap.
Whats wrong with the same time in the whole world? Without DST or timezone garbage that just makes life harder for both developers and travellers which are going to meet someone or have something booked.18 -
Metaprogramming maybe easy to write but is so fucking hard to read and harder to maintain. Why do people even like these dynamic languages anyway :-/
*a very loud and miserable groan which may be cry for help*
I hate my life right now.5 -
I hate it when certain keyboards have fn or the alt key at the edge of the keyboard instead of ctrl because it makes copying and pasting like a million times harder.3

my 8 month old on her stroller at the grocery:

old fuck: uh oh, time to go4 -
hey google, make my life harder. let's have an SDK version, then a corresponding android version, and finally a clown name like cotton candy or oreo or whatever so I always know exactly what version I'm working with without confusion 🙄🤡1

Anyone use the i3 window manager? I'm trying to get the hang of it, and I see no advantages, it's just harder to use, which is a shame because I /want/ to like it!11

It fucking pisses me off when people compare experience as a benchmark of his performance or knowledge while hiring for job and even salaries depend on that. How do you know that, that guy has jerked around while the younger guy with less years of experienco would work better and harder.
What is your experience with people like that?10 -
Anyone else here working as a developer in a digital advertising agency? You end up working on lots of shitty projects and there is nothing harder than working on something you don't believe in :/5

Because of networking, arch is harder to install on vbox.
guess who wiped and GREW his old antergos partition?
wish me luck in the arch install6 -
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY IT IS HARD TO GET A JOB AS JUNIOR DEV? This is because you don't need any knowledge about coding to get the fucking degree!!
I would love to work harder but it should meen something if you own the fucking paper!
Sorry got triggerd after reading another rant!8 -
Yay! I got my head wrapped around Vue3 parent / child components and fed the whole thing JSON data loaded via Axios. A small feat perhaps, but it just feels great to still "get" stuff when learning becomes harder as I get older.4
-
Just because you can do things in one line and throw in ternary operators everywhere, doesn't mean you should.. other people will touch your code. Make it readable instead of making it harder to maintain8
-
When the madness known as "software development" gets me down, I visit DevRant to complain and read about people who have it harder than me.
I just wanted to offer my condolences... Ya'll are so much more fucked than I am. 👍2 -
Lately I'm finding issues on git more helpful than StackOverflow.
I know those are different beasts, but for the harder/specific questions I'm finding more resources on the repos than on SO.2 -
So Microsoft doesn't ship the ODBC drivers for Access on their new distros of office because they run in an isolated environment... THEN WHAT GOOD IS YOUR FUCKING EXPORT TO ODBC OPTION IS. YOU'RE MAKING MY JOB SO MUCH HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE.6

frameworks are great and all but it gets much harder to google stuff. a lot of people use php, not that many use cake7

This year, Lord willing...
* get married
* take a one week honeymoon without a single frantic phone call/email/IM from work or clients. Way way harder than getting married!2 -
Me: *builds new state machine* Ok this makes adding new instance states easier, should also make enemy AI a million times easier!
Me after trying to do enemy AI: FUCKING CUNT! This system is a piece of fucking shit for AI, fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, etc
I think this will be harder than expected bois!
*Eye twitches*2 -
It's interesting that the most capable developers I have met have a harder time getting a job than the incapable ones.
All things equal, but skill, it's annoying to see.6 -
"Come on, please try a bit harder. Why don't the IT students make an app to sell local goods online or something? Even I, without knowing anything about tech, consider this to be easy".
Wise words from a non tech substitute teacher I once had the honor of studying under. When he checked everyone's 1 month project proposals, he expressed his disappointment.
I wonder if he works in management now.1 -
Troubleshooting code...
Me: "ok cool did that fix it?"
Program: [same error]
Me: "alright, so can I break it harder?"
Program: [new error]
Me: "now we're getting somewhere!" 🎉2 -
I like to go do a bit of manual labor to remind me I'm not trying to end up with a dead end job making just a hair above minimum wage.
Good motivation for me to try harder in school so I'll actually learn things and not to cheatmy way through like a lot of people I know.2 -
Someone recently told me that learning command line is pointless for a developer today, the world has moved towards GUIs for a reason and there is no point in making your dev life harder.
Opinions?25 -
My day job is teaching at a school.
On the side, a friend (and coworker) and I have been developing an app for schools for two years.
For the last months, I have been daydreaming about taking the plunge into developing the app full time.
We don't have many clients yet, but it's getting harder to find the time for coding.
Any suggestions?10 -
We just learned in university that you should use '1 << i' instead of 'Math.pow(2, i)' because it is faster when calculating 2^i...
Am I the only one who thinks that this would never get through a code review in a company? I mean it is harder to realize what is going on especially when you didn't went to university lately.7 -
Sometimes I wonder if I actually want to be a dev forever. Problem is I'm too smart to do anything easier and too lazy to do anything harder
-
Wondering how many of you have ADD/ADHD, diagnosed or not. I've heard people say that many programmers have ADD or ADHD and that it generally makes them a better programmer. I myself have ADD and I feel like it makes me a better programmer, but I have to work harder at paying attention to my wife/social life.24
-
My biggest dev regret was that I've followed other people's dream.
I lost precious time into trying being the "good kid" for my family and support them in their time of need.
Now I'm considered old for a starter and getting a dev job becomes harder with each passing day.4 -
Anyone else burned out? I'm fucking burned out. Definitely taking a week off soon. That sort of makes it harder to get motivated though. I was humming along nicely with my new project, but got sidetracked fixing stupid shit in the legacy code and dealing with a moron in customer service, and I guess that kicked me off into a small depression. I feel like I should have worked harder in school, so that I could have gone into sales or something high paying, instead of "software engineering". With all the ass I've been kicking over the last year, I sure hope I get a raise soon.13
-
FUCCKKKKK WHY DOES LINKEDIN HAVE TO REFRESH THE FEED EVERY TIME I SHARE A FUCKING ARTICLE! NOW I HAVE TO SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN YOU MORONS! WHY ARE YOU MAKING MY LIFE HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE??!!1

Every TV show/movie with a hacking scene....
Person trying to hack: I'm unable to get through their firewall.
Boss : Then hack HARDER.
Hacker: Thanks for the advice boss! I'm in! -
What's a database? Oh, uh... Think, like, a spreadsheet -- but it makes you wanna kill yourself even harder.4
-
"try harder and smarter, we will do a training if needed"... A coworker replying to another coworker (non dev tech support guy who never used postman in his life) in public chat... And I can't help but think that he is implying that the tech support guy is stupid.
KNOWING POSTMAN DOESN'T MAKE YOU SMART!!! AND YOU NEED TO SHOW SOME RESPECT AND LEARN HOW TO SPEAK!!9 -
I'm the only one who keep receiving phishing emails about not existing Netflix subscriptions from evident scam email addresses on a daily basis?
I tend to have more of those than newsletters I never subscribed to.
Come on, man, at least try harder to steal my data or money.4 -
Why is it so hard for people (especially managers) to learn to work smarter not harder....
FIX THE GODDAMN PROBLEM CORRECTLY... THE FIRST TIME SO WE DON'T HAVE TO KEEP FIXING ITS BLOWUPS ON WEEKENDS....
AND STOP HIRING MONKEYS THAT JUST KNOW TO PRESS BUTTONS RATHER THAN DESIGNING FULLY FUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS THAT DON'T BLOW UP OR LEAVE A TRAIL OF SHIT BEHIND THAT I NEED TO DECIPHER N CLEANUP....2 -
I think they are afraid of me :)
Last time I pushed them harder than anyone ever did since their tools I have to rely on precisely were unstable. Now each time I ping their channel in Slack I get immediate ack responses from their manager and architects .
Nice :) -
Feels like I'm battling anxiety lately. Always tons of projects to work on and they seem so easy, but getting round to them feels harder and harder. Anyone else have this issue? How do you deal with it. Cigar seems to have helped today...3
-
Commit as you go. Work on one thing at a time. Be detailed in your commit messages.
Finding and reverting that one small change that breaks everything is so much harder to do when you change lots of files and the commit message is "update".2 -
when you have to use one language inside of another, and you basically have to call functions allowing you to call the other's language function within it, and you get the hell confused, since it gets harder and harder to see what is what and who can call who and how, and the compiler ofc. won't say anything about it since it only cares about the main language you are in and not the nesting of the other...
I just have no idea what I'm doing right now, or if my thought process and understanding of this is even close to where it is supposed to be.
D: I'm just confused and insecure about this right now....
time for experiments to figure this out, and get the hang of it13 -
Why, for the love of all that is good, does anyone still code for absolute placements in css?!
I've spent 90%+ of my time lately making some changes, which is about 20x harder than it needed to be because this app (written in the last 1-3 years) has all of the styling set explicitly. How does anyone justify that?8 -
Looking forward to 2017, and working ten times harder to get my business running like a well oiled machine and getting lots of well paying clients. Also would like to manage stress better :)1

University assignment asks to create some encryption harder to break than Caesar Cypher. So I decided to go online and look for some tips on making a somewhat decent algorithm.
Universal answer: don't do it
😶
Well then, night off I guess 😎2 -
I had a user tell me how important he is and how our software is making it harder for important people like him to run reports on people in their region and how it "just doesn't make sense" for important people like him... and on and on and on and on.
I was on the phone for over 30 minutes.
Deep sigh -
I've spent the last 10 days on an assignment for an interview. Instead of starting with the requirements right away I decided to fiddle around and tried to add typescript but got stuck for 3 days. Now I just need to write the docs and final PR description but I'm feeling really burn out. I'll be rejected if the code is shitty, and that thought made me try harder. But when I tried harder, in the back of my head I thought "What if I'm still rejected after trying so hard?" and that kills my motivation. I'll just get it done tomorrow. Next week I have another assignment, I'm using chatgpt for that one.16

Programming is getting harder and harder instead of making our lives easier. Is it really supposed to be like this?10
-
Does anyone have that one song which they listen to while programming?
Mine is Harder Better Faster Stronger by daft punk13 -
I have the urge write my own javascript framework for my personal projects.
But I think it's harder than I think 😬
Probably should start with a PHP one. Much simpler.
Already have my own DB Lib is use a lot. Good start.6 -
Potentially hot take : If you're making a video course on a tool that supports multiple languages you should show examples in a language with explicit typing whenever possible.
Weakly typed and implicitly typed languages make it harder to know what the results of a particular statement are and therefore what you can do with them.6 -
18 year ago today the earth stood still... and everything that was never was again ..it truly was the day that changed the world for the future.
I remember where I was when it happened... My aunt and uncle, worked In the pentagon on that day... they remember but they have never talked about that day
Every year its suppose to get easier to cope with that day, but I feel like each year gets harder and harder as the more I realize the things that changed or the other things that also happened around that time... or was popular prior and slowly died out afterward... each year that goes on just reminds me how long ago it was and it’s only getting longer, for the days of “old” ... days and culture of what I remember growing up to never return.17 -
am i the only one that finds ui stuff (angularjs+css+makeing it look the way you want-tml etc..) alot harder to master then backend and even low level programming?
is somthing wrong with me??5 -
Imagine life as a Game,
Levels are Ages, if you have gotten older your level increases, and lifes getting easier and harder, easier with Knowledge and harder because of Diseases, challenges, kids etc...
Quests are life goals, such as having kids,
having a job, a family etc...
Side-Quests are jobs your getting from your boss, Jobs from Clients, Helping the Family, Cleaning your Room, etc..
Fast-Travel is Cars, Busses, Trains, Trams, etc... (Except in Germany)
and Last but not least,
Procastination, The End Boss of life, if you defeat Procastination you have beaten life... (But also died because the game is Over...)4 -
Make. Set it up once and it does what it's supposed to. Repeatable.
Although I'm a vim user, I think make would be harder to replace for me than my editor. -
I would love to get into more frameworks, but half of them make 90% of your work harder, are not documented well enough or are just confusing what they actually offer. 😥1

Anyone know the reason why Google removed the Android SDK from the Android Studio Installer? It's making me work harder in setting it up :/5

Being a newbie is getting harder and harder. The later you start in a field, the more has already covered in that field, meaning you have to run as much more to catch up.6

When you are asked to implement a fix for a colleague and do so.
Then a half day later you see another colleague change in the git repo, that's using more lines and is harder to read but basically does the same as your version

My school system is complete shit, if I haven't said so already. With Gerrymandered, Arizona, and I, our futures are actively being made harder by the fact they the system discourages experimental thought. Experimental as in anything different whatsoever. In tech, you usually have to think outside the box a little, and this is only making it harder.5

18 hours. Because offshore doesn't get that I need to sleep at some point. I've become more assertive and pushed back a lot harder. Added "no" to my vocabulary.

Anyone else work on a project that ends up taking all your time since it is way harder than you thought, but when it comes to talking about it to your supervisor you realize just how easy it really is and you just look stupid in front of the person youre explaining it to?4

Everyone is going on about how suddenly finding a programming gig is or has become a lot harder why with the outbreak and the economic downturn it is going g to cause.
But realistically is it true? Did I just pick a bad time to start a new career in this particular field or is it just FUD?20 -
The test sucked fucking ass. I’m almost sure I failed.
This entire third has been full of bad grades in math and I need immediate help. God, I feel helpless.11 -
I used to have time to read up on new web development tools and techniques and it helped me get a better job.
Now I have a better job I'm always busy, which I love, but it's harder to keep up to date.
I do some reading in my own time but it's more difficult to focus.
Thinking about it, I suppose I do keep learning just by being at work and solving new problems.1 -
Had a manager that, during performance reviews, would say things like:
"You need to work harder on managing our clients' warm fuzzies."
"I can't give you a hard number to strive for on this metric here because you'll just do the minimum"
Needless to say, the turnover in that group was insanely high. -
...This algo can predict new thermoelectric material discoveries years in advance...

P.S : I also need to work harder as I barely know the surface of Linear Regression.1 -
When you started your first programming job was it easier or harder than you pictured because I feel like I'm no where near ready (although I'm not out of high school just yet so I have time to prepare but still)3

Approaching the end of high school is really harder than it seems before you actually get to the last year. So many possibilities ahead!

the closer i get to the ending

what wrong have i done in trying to help mankind
what is happening
why is this happening
what... do you want..... from me.......3 -
You know how you can tell that a product is well designed, intutive, and user friendly?
If they have an accompanying e-learning platform with thousands and thousands of videos and even more pages of documentation, of course!
From the people who created SQL, comes something that somehow does pretty much the same thing, but is harder to use and easier to gate features behind paywalls! Fuck yeah!5 -
I really try to not write passive aggressive replies but people who don't seem to read before typing are making things harder than they have to be.
"Wow, thanks you so very much for the suggestion. I mentioned that I already tested this scenario and that it seems to be unrelated to this case, but thanks for bringing it up again! Now I really question my ability to get my point across"1 -
No better way to start off a new year than to wake up to message from the boss telling you that you need to start to work even harder because there are projects overdue and clients has started charging penalties.
Of course he doesn't care that there are only two of us (me, a Junior Android Dev and he iOS Dev) and there are 3 projects, all with deadlines in December 2017 or January 2018.1 -
When date format is hard coded and application goes international. Application works ok until day turns 13. Error is seen a couple of days later, then it's the 1st again and everything is ok. Just to mention one of many strange errors. Just to make it harder, app works well if running in other countries that is using the same format. Daahh1

Dev work estimation is harder when the higher ups gives you a one line jira description and expect you to provide them with a timeline. Like how many times i gotta send the ticket back up the pipeline ><1
-
What do you think about this assertion: 'When I’m on my deathbed, I won’t look back at my life and wish I had worked harder. I’ll look back and wish I spent more time with the people I loved' ?5
-
If you start to get frustrated, take a break. Your brain has two modes of thinking: focused & diffuse. You can only utilize focused mode for a short time, and sometimes it's harder to look at the broader picture. Go take a walk, do some push-ups, or check devRant. You diffuse mode will make some connections when you're not even trying once you relax a little bit.5

working on a big app, developing front and backend while being focussed on design.
when you have more than 20 different layouts and you're forced to use license free stuff, life's getting harder every day.
why is material design so nice ;(2 -
Why would they add a reason for downvoting but no reason for upvoting? Why would they make it harder to dislike something but like something? I mean, why would they? WHY DO THE APPLICATION NEED A REASON SO THAT I COULD DOWNVOTE SOMEONE
WHY

The problem with those USB sticks that don't have the cover over them is that you can insert them upside down.
That turns out to be harder to fault find than when it just doesn't go in... -
Guys, do you know any good source to learn MVVM to android (kotlin would be nice). I know MVVM theory and practice (I used it in WPF, C#). But i have hard times understanding how it work with android. I watched reso coder, but his tutorials are even harder to understand. Thanks3

Devs: We've spent some time estimating the stories, and found that we will finish a month too late. Which stories should be removed?
PM: None
Devs: Which are less important?
PM: All are vital. (read: Work harder)1 -
When I quit my job making multiple bullshit excuses of how tired I am and how much better my life would be if I work from home and here I am been lazy for 2 - 3 months and didn't learn anything new also didn't practice what I know.
Honestly I'm so disappointed in myself and the fact that it was a good opportunity for me makes it harder on me blaming myself. -
How do you guys deal with tragedy?
My mother didn't, but almost lost her fingers today. I couldn't control myself, I panicked and cried harder than she did5 -
Any other people here that find Python to be actually a harder language than Java? With Java it's much easier to keep track of your code and to track what variables refer to certain object types.
It feels like Python has much more quirks and feels therefore much more inconsistent as a language. Object oriented programming is more verbose with static methods and decorators being vague for example. This makes it harder to grasp concepts like design patterns and SOLID principles in Python imo.7 -
Is it just me or is the 'storefront' test for CAPTCHA much harder than the schoolbus or traffic light? Could be my diminishing eyesight, or bourbon too.4

I got my full time gig in January. This semester I decided to go back for my bachelor's because I only got my associates degree. Honestly balancing the homework and work isnt that bad. It's trying to get ANYTHING ELSE done....like getting and oil change, going to the dentist, etc. I have to use paid time off for all of it now. :(2 -
The web dev front-end world is insane!!
webpack, babel, node, npm, sass, css, postcss, javascript, cypress etc etc.
It should be easier and easier to build web apps NOT harder and harder for each year!13 -
Something I just read
"It’s hard to build a 100% secured system, the only thing you can do is to make the attacker’s job harder."5 -
does life get harder than a fuck every single day or is it just me? 2pac was right, only strong do survive in this world1
-
Decided to enter a programming context. Couldn't read the input for the first problem. Tried different language and reading the input looked even harder. Decided to go to sleep.1
-
It's harder to grab hold of underperforming colleagues and give them a shake up, and harder to catch contractors working more than one job at once and doing poorly at both.
I'd still take it over a long commute and office work any day, though.1 -
Did devrant always down scale pictures to 50%? it just feels that recently pictures have become even harder to read if compressed+resized5
-
Making an efficient design foe large scale is way harder than what meets the eye.
Especially when legacy support is involved. -
"If all else fails, [working harder than anyone else] is the greatest competitive advantage of any career." - John C Jay

Support Ticket:
"OMG I DON"T SEE THE NEW THING YOU SAID WAS THERE!?!?!!? OH GAWD WHY WHY WHY!!!!"
setTimeout(fuckingActuallyLookThisTime(), 3600000)
"Oh never mind I found it."
God damn people, put some minimal effort in before you fire up tickets and emails or whatever.2 -
We had a meeting where all the devs on a large sprint team were told they must attend late that evening. The gist of that meeting was 'well done your all working hard and done some good work but we have over committed so work harder!" but they took an hour and a half to make the point.

"Some people want their paychecks and to go home, and that’s fine. You and me, though—we’re gonna work harder than they do. We’ll build things that ensure that entire populations just setting foot on the web for the first time can tap into the collected knowledge of the whole of mankind." - Mat Marquis

I hate it when my language stop supporting '++' and '--' to make it easier to write. Like 'i++' is so harder to write than 'i +=1'
-
Every Morning I wake up with a subtle headache. It’s not as bad as with a hangover but still like a dehydration headache. I drink like 3 - 4 Liters of Water per day though so it can’t be that.
Any ideas on how to fix this? It makes getting up just even harder than it already is..26 -
Now I have to make updates in three different tools about the projects I’m working on, this is stupid since we work for a tech company and we shouldn’t be using fucking Power Point to update statuses on projects. Management should be making other’s life easier not harder. 🥸1
-
My company has way too many fucking engineers that sit around doing nothing. Our profits are down YoY yet my boss just approved budget for additional engineers. My team honestly doesn't need them and I don't want to risk them getting laid off in a few months when the regression his us harder. How do I communicate this to my boss?4
-
This book I'm reading on SEO is like drinking nightquil.
The more I read the harder it gets to not pass out.6 -
How long (what % of day) are you fully focused (contentrated) on programming on average per day? How many hours is your work day? The longer the hours, the harder to stay focused we probably can agree. How are you doing in carreer - good or not, can tell as detailed as you might want to share.19
-
So i just saved myself like a day of work.
My boss wanted me to make a new endpoint for a webpage I'm working. Ok, spend yesterday afternoon planning it out.
Come in this morning, ready to write it. Look through our api docs. Turns out we have almost the exact endpoint i need, minus 1 simple field. Add the field (1 line of code).
Everything is looking good, I'm a day ahead of where i planned to be. I just wish my boss had told me of the endpoint earlier.
Planning and good docs pay off. -
I uploaded my static site on AWS. Doesn't load when I typed the public IP in the URL. Googled, found StackOverflow answer to traffic and ports as a security group to AWS. Tried it and it still doesn't work.
Hey Bluehost, sorry I left but I'm back now7 -
Is it harder to work a full time dev job or be a full time CS student with a part time dev job? I’m currently living the second one and it’s hard to balance both work and school.7
-
Looking for a software engineer job being mostly self taught feels harder. A this point I'm used to companies not replying to my applications. I failed a coding test for a Silicon Valley startup and learned a lesson. (don't apply for jobs that require knowledge of languages that I don't know nothing about). Anyway I'm still feeling positive and I'm not gonna give up6
-
It's like at YouTube they're making it harder and harder for their users to actually use it. Any ideas how this occurred?2
-
Overall not much, but I think I would have moved on faster and harder. Definitely spent a bit too much time on a salary that was well below market rate just because I was overly-cautious about moving.
-
We had an IT question:
What's a window?
I wonder.... -.-
I mean bruh if you want us to study you gotta make shit harder. -
When you have a long line like this...
if ($obj->getStupidlyLongNamedThing() + $hard + $harder * $hard / $harder + $obj->getAlsoStupidLongThing([$sillyLongExpression, $thing]) > $obj->omgThisIsInsane());
If you're just going to be lazy and break it up however where where ever so it looks like crap...
if ($a->b()
____&& $a->c());
Then I urge you to do one of two things:
* Shut up your face and turn on word wrap in the IDE rather than manually doing it even worse.
* Break the long parts into variable assignments or something.
* (or get a wider screen)
Example:
$a = $obj->getStupidlyLongNamedThing();
$b = $hard + $harder * $hard / $harder;
$c = [$sillyLongExpression, $thing];
$d = $obj->getAlsoStupidLongThing($c);
$e = $obj->omgThisIsInsane();
if ($a + $b + $d > $d);
With sensible variable names.3 -
I feel like finding a replacement key for your laptop keyboard is way harder than it needs to be. I broke my 'A' key and after going through three different websites and 20 dollars later I've settled to just replace my 'A' key with my '7' key. 😕2
-
Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1 -
I wish eclipse would use an useful charset like UTF-8, instead of the windows-1252 charset. I feel like he only propose of this damm thing is to give germans a harder time coding
-
What in the actual fuck is vs code doing with the language servers? I am idle for minutes, but the language servers are constantly are roasting my cpu harder than linus doing code reviews.
Fucking hell, I can't enjoy the music in the background, with the cooling system crying.3 -
Sometimes a poorly planned project makes coding a lot harder especially if features and UI/UX always changes 😭
-
my next challenge is now building a personal portfolio page :)
I'll create a one pager.
I'm just excited cause its a lil bit harder than building an easy tribute page. My heart will go on xD2 -
Not using my period of unemployment to really delve into freelancing. It's much harder to do on the side. But I lacked knowledge and experience back then.
Also not interviewing companies better. Always ask about everything. -
is it me, or does Microsoft just make everything either harder, or more annoying that it needs to be?...2
-
Old colleague reached out to me. He needed to reinstall one of my web apps (combination of python, php and Javascript (frontend)).
It was harder to do than expected and the code was not the most clever I ever saw.
Not sure what I was thinking during that time of my life 🤔 -
I can't seem to get a job. I know I lack team skills (agile team environmetn stuff) and "commercial" experience. But I had hoped by working on Opensource projects, displaying my ability to write clean documented code, and use of TDD publicly would help get to the initial interviews. But I'm still not hearing back from anyone and it's getting harder and harder to find work when I keep getting questioned about why I haven't been employed for almost two years3
-
Css positioning is harder to understand than the full OOP concept.
So i wanted to create a very simple page with a single css file. I spent 2 hours to position the buttons in the fixed header and center some things.
I got the whole OOP concept with abstraction, polymorphism and inheritance in an hour and could use it right after without problems.
Holy shtcake i never want to do frontend.8 -
Whoever came up with the PSD2 can get fucked up their ass by all the cocks in the world combined.
Whoever fucked up the new security implementations so bad can get fucked up their ass by all the spiked, rusty, aids-contaminated metal poles in existance.
And whoever allowed all this to happen and approved it should take all the nukes in the world, shove them all up their worthless holes, and detonate them all at once.
Fuck you.
Die in a fire.
Sincerely,
Someone who's failing harder and harder every day to not lose faith in what little good there is in humanity.9 -
I can make sales people's lives easier or harder based on how I prioritise tasks... They learn to use manners when they realise my power!

Do people know of good resources (books, blogs, YouTube channels, whatever) regarding advancing to the higher levels of the tech industry?
I can find lots of resources for how to get started in your career but as I've advanced it gets harder and harder to find guidance (this is not surprising, but still lamentable). I am currently one promotion away from Senior at my company and I have no idea what to expect beyond that.
Any suggestions?2 -
Some days I just can't seem to get any of my code working. What makes it worse is that it gets 'harder' to figure out the longer it takes because the stress of it all really wears me down...2
-
So it’s promotion season in my org and once again I got passed up. Manager says “you’re right there just a little bit longer” but he’s been saying that for the better part of a year. I’ve consistently done the job not in my job description but the job of the position above me. Some of my senior engineers and staff engineers have told me personally that they are shocked that I haven’t been promoted yet. And I know I should be patient but hearing other people (albeit in different teams) get recognized when you work just as hard if not harder than they do, and you go to conferences and you volunteer to be on call and you lead meetings and when you’re one of the technical anchors of the team… I don’t know. I shouldn’t take it personally I get it but it’s a huge blow to my confidence and my mental health. I work hard and when I see news like this I work harder and get burned out and when I still see news like this it makes me work even harder and get even more burnt out until I reach a mental breaking point. Makes me feel like I’ll never be good enough.
Idk.2 -
Took me like an hour to finish the final assignment in a class where each project gets progressively harder. I was shocked, I was like “there’s no way it’s this easy. What did I do wrong”
Turns out the assignment I did was not even for marks, and the actual final assignment is completely different and MUCH more difficult.
Hug!!!!!!1 -
i actually feel much better when i am starving or barely eating, it strengthetns the focus to work harder in order to buy the bread7
-
I've been finding it harder and harder to balance both project management and development.
I frequently find that I don't have enough time to manage both.
Sometimes you just wish you could be two people. -
I am stuck on a UNIX legaxy project. This is the perfect time to learn awk, sed, vim. I use them but I wanna get better.
I can read a book, course, but I WANT to write code, maybe something like the hackerrank challenges but harder.
How do I get advanced in awk, sed, vim?5 -
Deciding to do some work is much harder than actually doing any. This New Year Depression is killing me.
-
Silence so I can hear myself think and then just write the first line. It's hard to start, but once I get going it is even harder to stop.
Sometimes I'm afraid of starting because the codingzone switches my brain into an Asperger patient. I just can't socialize afterwards. So if there is a evening meeting morning coding is a no-no. -
Learning how practice works by playing guitar, working at things slowly first then moving on to harder stuff.

Shit my "Senior" Dev coworker days:
"Well, logically, lies are more important because it takes more effort to remember the lie, who you've told it to, and any extra stuff you made up to keep your story straight. Then, when you have more than one lie, you work even harder to keep them all in line".1 -
Thanks google for making it so fucking damn difficult to authenticate G Apps users and check their groups/org unit. Makes my fucking work so much harder! To make matters worse you decided that that if I want to get the information in a seprate call I have to use a seprate admin account to do it because apparently letting the user see it is to fucking hard.
-
Staying away from social media is quite harder nowadays since it has become quite bad habit. And overcoming this habit is going to take quite a lot of serious efforts and dedication1

A tale as old as time:
Customer: "This is wrong in all these X places!?!?!?"
-screenshots, panic, etc.-
Many emails and clarifications later we find out it is wrong ... in just ONE place ... and it wasn't even one of their initial examples.
Customer: "Why does this take so long to fix???"
Bro.... -
A cook or a chef, pretty honorable field of work... but the job is hard, stressful, long hours and the pay can often be terrible, so you definitely need passion.
To be honest, all my chefs friends work harder than anyone else I know.1 -
Why does the documentation in the website for API doesn't include the optional parameters to use?
Why are you making my life harder!
Good thing their github.io docs has the documentation for the parameters I needed.
So, why not include it in the official documentation?! -
Why do I get downvoted on Reddit when I post a link to my new blog post without any constructive feedback? It's even harder than StackOverflow.5
-
Do you ever overcomplicate an explanation to make things sound harder, because you know that explaining a hard thing simply makes them sound easy to people who just don't know?1
-
Kinda sounds like a typical nerd, but playing video games. Thinking about all the moving parts in the game causes me to think harder about how I write my code.1
-
Just learned how to write Django apps... I think I'm going to have a harder time making the app look good with HTML. Thought I could just use a Jekyll template, yeah, seems to be a lot more work then it's worth.1

My planned big purchases for this year:
- Gopro Hero 5 or 7
- Play station or Xbox, can't be bothered to buy and maintain a PC for gaming or have time to cry over the forced Windows 10 updates.
- Bike jackets
Now gotta work harder to afford them.4 -
When you get more managerial corrections on your projects and approaches to things than your coworkers do BECAUSE YOUR WORK IS SO MUCH HARDER AND MORE TECHNICAL THAN EVERYONE ELSE’S but you still end up looking dumb because you’re the only one being corrected on stuff.

I need a new job. anyone need a mid level PHP dev? LAMP symfony nosql APIs bash and so much more, after 4 years and they keep me at a Jr PHP dev title so it's harder for me to find anything else....5

During my career I have found that if you *don't use lambdas it will be harder for you to create callback hell. You don't NEED to use something everywhere just because you CAN.
"But lambdas are cool, our clients dig it".
Go fuck yourself.

Limited power!!!,, limited power!!!. limited power!!!.. I'm so tired of this nation... coding is hard for us jst because of this country... been trying to focus and work harder without blaming the country but it jst not working2

Gotta love recruiters who add you on LinkedIn with a great opportunity to work for a lot less and a lot harder than your current job on a position not even relevant to your work.

I needed to do some maintenance on some of the text views in my app because they were sticking to the center and not to the leading edge (aka left).
This is harder than it sounds like.1 -
Get a Model M.
Because seriously... I’ve listened to Model M ASMR and holy shit... I want one even harder now. -

So I just introduced devRant to a friend of mine and now he hates me for making his life harder :/ where do I type "sudo apt-get remove devRant" into him?1 -
They think i build medical software prototypes. I build medical software prototypes. They also think their job (teachers, all of them) is much harder, because i only type some stuff, they are also correct on that part.

This could be controversial, but I think I prefer my Legion laptop's shallower, slightly softer keys over my ThinkPad's deep, harder to press, noisier keys6

Wish I would have tried harder at becoming a sports star. Society more readily accepts African American jocks than they do their African American geeks.1
-
Ok fuck everything, I will not work today nothing is fucking working, the feature that I implemented easily in the last app, is harder to implement now because of the new version of the library. Even the old and same version of the library I used in the previous app is not compatible with the new version of the framework. What a freaking horrible development experience we are getting into. Developing should become easier not harder mother fucking library developers, should I write my own library now? fuck you, and fml too.

Sometimes i need longer on the simple code than on the challanging code, because it's harder to distract me while i'm solving a problem

I tried, then I tried again, then I tried again, but harder, and after eight years of constant learning every darn day after school something clicked inside my head and I realized everything.
I never really learned that hard since because I don’t need to. -
When I tried to start a company and failed miserably. MVP was shit. Much harder to build a decent web app than I anticipated.3

I'm a self taught web developer, I know I can develop great apps, but my code doesn't feel structured... It gets messier as I add more features, and this makes it harder to develop and keep track of everything.
How can I improve this, are there any processes to follow?5 -
I know it's not really code but, I'm so pissed my school now the blocked the registry editor, makes changing the unchanable wallpaper harder2

So I’m not having too much trouble with my project. Does that mean I’m doing something too easy or have I actually just absorbed the knowledge I’ve been reading?
I’ve never actually used EF Core before and I thought this would be harder, and more time consuming.2 -
Is there how to get upload and download speeds balanced?
Will we be forever stuck as mostly consumers of internet instead of as much as producers?3 -

Recommend some interesting/innovative VR games that may be harder to come by? I want to get an idea of what's out there.

I found someone to make some project with!
I thought finding side project partner is harder then being fullstack myself. Stupid me.1 -

Trying to broaden my skill set by learning angular 2 ( no experience of prior angular )

Any advice on how to get started with angular?4 -
Right. My next project from now is to create a copy of the bc command. It'll be long. It'll be hard. But that's the end of the harder part! 💪

I worked sufficiently more time on r programming. I felt a bit stress and now my heart is beating abit harder even while I'm not coding. what's happening to me?

#development #stages of #vision #impaired 😂
Do you sometimes feel like you need to put those lenses in cuz you can't see the damn code only to later remove them because you start feeling as if it weren't you staring at the code but the code staring at you.
And by making it a bit harder to see, you somehow find it easier to focus.6 -
Everyone's stressing and regretting not buying/investing in Bitcoin when it was hella cheap way back when and now it's even harder to join in with the whole bubble view.
Don't mind me and my Forex though. I'm sticking with the other traders of actual currencies.1 -

Let's say that you have (or had) a colleague that you utterly despise for whatever reason. Have you ever wrote convoluted or straight up spaghetti code on purpose just to make his/her life harder?
(I am aware that authoring bad code can bite you in the ass down the line, just curious to see if anyone ever went that far) -
Does anyone else work for a DoD contractor? I am totally incompetent at my job and was wondering how long it would take for them to fire me.
I heard it’s harder since it’s a DoD contractor.
Not sure if I oversold myself in the interview of what but boy do I need a lot of help.10 -
Why do C programmers prefer dark mode?

Are we not headed to dictatorship? Red states are again making it harder for the minority and young voters to vote. After the Supreme Court voted to stop supervision of Southern states, 1200 DMV offices were closed. But the super threat is states like Georgia will have Republicans count the votes if "irregularities" are found. How Stalinesque of them.4

What's harder than trying to name a variable is to think of a memorable but easy to type password to a system that resets expires every 3 months with history checks.2

So all the new frontend work needs to be completed with a proprietary toolset called Telerik. Before I was contented to submit to all the frontend tasks as it won me more Vue experience, but now that won’t be the case.
Will it be harder to sell my skillset to another company? Companies only get Telerik if they pay the cash.4 -
It's always hard to balance time between romantic affairs and programming projects when both are going on simultaneously. I've been talking to a girl at my college, and even though she doesn't take up much of my time, I still feel like it's harder to make time for my programming. I guess this is more of dating affecting my code, but I personally prioritize code over dating currently in life.
-
You know the only reason 20 years ago I didn't try harder to find a girl to have children with is I'm afraid of being threatened and controlled via them or people trying to coerce me into letting them being abused and then going to prison for killing said people. Good job
Let's just eliminate all the worthwhile genes13 -
How do you guys deal with spacing in react? I already tried: putting it in components' styles directly, creating a component for whitespace and making utility css classes. Still I always end up finding a situation where it becomes harder and/or requires a workaround.

Can I get some advice on converting between languages (by hand unless I can find a program to do it)
Python variant (micropython) to C++
This project just keeps getting harder and harder for me. :(
