If I do a job in 30 minutes it’s because I spent 10 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes.12
-
Always postponed learning vim. For my new job I need to know how to work with vim.
Finally a reason not to postpone anymore!21 -
Find me a co-founder of a startup who while telling about his/her company doesn't say "Machine Learning" in his/her speech.
I dare you. I double dare you.5 -
I'm a week into my new job right now. What do I love the most about it?
Learning things all day long and getting paid for it!
I'm learning about hosting things, DNS, cyber security, configurations, Linux (although my current skill set with Linux has been enough for now) and so on!
Hell, easy day today (not that many tickets) so decided to start learning Ansible! Next to that I've gotta learn vim (it just autocorrected that to cum.... O.o), work with hosting panels, mail stuffs (dns, debugging etc etc) and so fucking on.
The boss hasn't been at location yet which will happen tomorrow but he seemed like a very chill guy.
I love this!21 -
Yes I'm a developer who is programming in public, no that does not mean you can keep learning over and looking at my fucking screen9
-
Why are interviewers so resistant to letting people use Google while doing coding questions? It’s not like I can remember all the semantics of every language anyway, and so much of coding is learning to use Google correctly.8
-
When i started learning CSS I thought `!important` will put the property's precedence to the lowest possible level, because, you know, I thought it means "not important".3
-
I'm a newbie when it comes to programming. The thing I like about devRant is that I'm learning how not to be "that guy" from everyone's complaints.
Here's to devRant teaching us newbs how to not make as much of a mess of things.8 -
One of my top 10 worst meetings, was for an interview for a job I really wanted. The guy started off the technical interview by asking me about language features that had been replaced since before I started learning the language. Told him when I started learning and his reply was:
"Yeah I see that on your CV, but come on, you MUST know this stuff".
eh no asshole, because its been removed for 4 years, you MUST know its not relevant10 -
My bf learning a programming language I already know. Him frustrated with it not working. Me in the same room watching anime. His mom calls. I go over and see if I can figure out what's not working while he's in the phone. He was trying to run from command line and wasn't in the right folder 😆7
-
Most painful dev learning experience?
Learned that no matter hard you work, no matter how big the dragon you slain/slew, there are individuals out there waiting to tear you down. Not immediately, certainly not in front of you, and capable of going to extremes just to make themselves feel/look better.7 -

Amazon is giving ML tutorials for free for those of us interested in the field :)
I think its pretty cool that they are providing the training for free, not that they need the money dem greedy basterds!
Here is the link
"BuT aL! AmAZon iZ eViL!!" Yeah fuck it whatever. This is not for you then. Grab a dick and carry on(free dicks for everyone regarding of Amazon and AWS feelings)

"we use machine learning to ..."
Ffs you're interviewing a developer, not pitching to a investor. We know how much machine learning you use.7 -
How machine learning works,
Interviewer: What's your biggest strength?
Developer: I am a quick learner
Interviewer: what is 1 + 1
Developer: 30.
Interviewer: Not even close, Its 2.
Developer: 210 -
Learning CSS .
Understand CSS shadow today.
Did a little practice..
And come up with this. It's too easy..
Doing more practice just because it's fun 😄 I think that's why most coders code ! Because it's fun 😊 though I know it's not even "programming language" 😂9 -
The year was 2021 and we have to implement X
Alice, the manager: let's do this and this
Me: actually that won't scale, I did the same in my previous company. Here's an analysis on why it doesn't scale
Alice: nope, we'll have to do it like that. If it doesn't scale we'll fix it. It's a learning opportunity.
The feature was rolled out, and we got tons of alerts after 1 week.
Alice: haha what a ride! At least the team learned something new
Me: I didn't learn anything new. All I got was stress and disrupted sleep because of those midnight incidents...
Then 2022 came, Alice was promoted thanks to the incredible leadership to deliver X, I joined a different project, a part of this project is to implement Y, similar to X.
Bob, the manager: let's do this and this
Me: actually that won't scale, I did the same in my previous project. Here's an analysis on why it doesn't scale, you can ask Alice if you want.
Bob: nope, we'll have to do it like that. If it doesn't scale we'll fix it. It's a learning opportunity.
The feature was rolled out, and we got tons of alerts after 1 week.
Bob: haha what a ride! At least the team learned something new
Me: I didn't learn anything new. All I got was stress and disrupted sleep because of those midnight incidents...
It's 2023 now, Bob got promoted thanks to the awesome leadership to roll out Y, I joined another project, which requires us to develop Z, similar to X and Y.
Chris, the manager: let's do this and this
Me: ah shit here we go again...4 -
Networking class. We're learning to configure switches, or at least trying to. A full hour goes by and the thing is not making a single beep. I frustration we lean back. Then my friends sees it. We never plugged in the power cable.6

> Open private browsing on Firefox on my Debian laptop
> Find ML Google course and decided to start learning in advance (AI and ML are topics for next semester)
**Phone notifications: YouTube suggests Machine Learning recipes #1 from Google**
> Not even logged in on laptop

> Not even history enabled
> Not fucking even windows
😒😒😒
The lack of privacy is fucking infuriating!

After one year of learning to code I am still not sure if I am an adequate programmer or a really effective Google user...5
-
So Im making my best friend (which is a girl) a website. I'm not a pro at it so please don't roast me. I am self taught and still learning. A few opinion and ideas would hurt ? K:30

"Don't bother spending time learning MVC. We'll never use it here."
o_O
Well, that was 4 years ago, I'm still working here, they're not, we're using MVC.5 -
Programming is not about learning many languages, it's about making a way to simplify a task. With increasing it's productivity and minimizing task duration.2
-
Not caring about other people at university. Setting my own pace when it comes to learning had a huge impact on my mental health.1
-
Do not steer away from projects using technologies you may not know or be comfortable in. Instead worked your hardest to get it right, ask lots of questions and don't be insulted if people find issues in your code. It's a learning experience.
-
It's not always true that degree holders hate self-taught developers. Sometimes, it's the other way around. When somebody mentions he gained a cs degree, he sometimes gets hate, too, hearing "degrees are useless! yadayada..." like it's a sin to have one. We should never stop learning whether we have a degree or not, and we should stop this hate and divided culture.18

Just completed learning vuejs, and made a pwa app along side , and since IPL2018 is going on, so I though why not create one dashboard show all past IPL Season data. https://github.com/imshubhamsingh/...5

Top reason not to be a dev:
If you can't stand it when the computer does EXACTLY what you told it to, and don't have the patience, curiosity, and interest learning how to make it do the thing you wanted in the first place. 🙂1 -
It baffles me how underrated Electron is.
I'm not a fan of learning millions of different Framework, but I think that Electron is groundbreaking.
To give some context, both Slack and Discord are made using Electron26 -
zero motivation for anything, i just want sit outside in the sun at the lake with ice cream and not in front of a screen. And not being bothered by the new vacum cleaner loud deep learning rig of the data science department in this open floor office.
I fucking forgot my noise cancling headphones. FML2 -
I'm turning 28 this year and I still feel I got a really really long way ahead in understanding Javascript and all the new web app building technologies happening.
Feeling a little frustrated for not learning faster and getting kind a stuck, I'm not getting any younger.11 -
Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6 -
Im going to my first IT conference!
By looking at the plan i already regret not getting the "Buzzword bingo"...
Machine learning? Check
Databases? Check!
Internet of things? Check!
Chatbot/Virual Assistant? CHECK!4 -
It is kinda sad to see some software that looks quite promising, and when I check how-to-deploy crap it is only;
"Copy and paste this shit to make it work"
People are not learning anything.2 -
I've realized I'm so busy working with technology, I don't have time left to keep learning it and playing with it. What are some fun ways you all keep learning new things and staying engaged?17
-
Fucking tired of hearing the hatred against php. When I began learning php , i didnt know how unpopular it has became and now i' m in the middle of learning laravel, and i see people saying php is not even worth programming in. 😣25
-
I regret that I didn't start learning to code before I went to university and that I never had Computer Science/Programming classes before in school (which is not really my fault but I always wished for this)7
-
Been encountering way too many people who say that "Programming is easy" or "Learning to code is easy".
Like, yeah mother fucker we have education curriculums to teach kids. But that's not all there is to it.
This has the same energy as someone saying "math is easy" after learning 2+2=4. There's more a lot more to it dude.7 -
Before learning the css grid, I fell asleep so fast everytime at night. After the bootcamp
This is the 3rd day and I still can’t sleep on time, my brain keeps on banging my eyes to wake up and try all of the websites that have been piled up on my brainbfor 3 years
P.S. I start learning grid after using bootstrap layout the first time. Not gonna touch it again. It breaks my brain kinda bad1 -
Someone asked me how I learned to program. And I realized it was a series of telling a client "No that's not possible" then finding out it is, on Stackoverflow... And learning how to do it1
-
Don't start crying when you feel programming is not for you. Learning new is always hard. Just "behave" like a Rhino.6
-
What do you guys think of codecademy, free code camp and their likes? Please recommend good learning platforms better than these for absolute beginners.
Also can you use android studio for java programs and not just android apps?17 -
Failure is not the problem.
Problem is not admitting and accepting that you failed.
Problem is not learning from your mistakes.
Problem is causing the same damage over and over again.
What's worsens the situation is defending the dumb act.
If you cannot handle failure then not only you stagnate your growth, but you also negatively affect people around you.
Mistakes make you perfect only when you fix them.7 -
Learning to use Lightroom,
First try...
The hardest part about editing photos is to not oversaturated them even when you feel warmer colours look better . I guess I overdid it
P.S. that’s me in the picture enjoying the sky pissing on my face (sarcasm intended)5 -
Anyone know how to convince a client that machine learning will not be a magical solution to all their problems???
2019 is gonna be super interesting.4 -
Next month I'm starting my master studies in embedded systems. Currently I have not any knowledge in this topic (made my bachelor in an other part of IT). Any tips or tricks?
Currently I'm starting learning C++ 😅13 -
My learning process :
Open library's homepage
Read.
Don't fully get.
Search stackoverflow.com for examples
Not quite yet.
Sleep
Got it!
AM I a bad developer?9 -
I'm not yet a programmer, I'm still learning. But is it normal to get so frustrated when I can't find a solution to something and start feeling totally useless?
It's funny because after a sleep I sit down again and usually fix the problem10 -
When you're a newbie at your work, fresh out of school and your company does not have a test server and the plus is your boss does all his coding via vim.
The sharpest learning curve and you quickly realize how much more learning is done after school.2 -
life is too short to spend it by learning all the time and not actually enjoying to be alive.

About every project at my last job. Impossible to like any project with a boss that legitimately thinks frames and tables are a better option than learning css.
But why not, attribute styling on html-elements are the future indeed.7 -
Hi everyone,
I am working in a company where the pay is not that great but i am learning newer technologies here. And now I am getting a offer from a company where the pay will be decent but not so sure that I will learn that much.
Need advise which one should i choose.7 -
Started learning js 5 days ago.
Its so trash and all over the place which makes it able to do anything in weird ways
Not sure if I like it. I miss java.13 -
Dear companies..
There is a fucking difference between:
-pattern recognition
-machine learning
And
- artificial INTELLIGENCE....
Learning from experience is NOT THE SAME as being able to make conclusions out of unknown conditions and figuring out new stuff without any input.8 -
Never forget, learning feels like flailing.
If you're not flailing, you're not learning.
Warning: does not apply to swimming.13 -
Started learning PHP bcuz @dfox loves it. Why not me?
(instantly)
WHY IS THERE SO MANY -> SIGNS???????
IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE AN ARROW AT ALL!!!!!!!!
IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST --> TO LOOK BETTER!!!!!
UUUURRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
(stops learning a few hours ago, got a refund)

Is machine learning not a concept we use any more, everything is called AI?
I did not get the memo about this.16 -
Hi, I am a recruiter representing awesome projects. It's the next thing after machine learning! You would be crazy not to apply.
But the is a strict requirement: you need to have 69 years of experience in devRant. Please comment if you have serious interest.5 -
I know there are different ways of learning programming, but I see students actually taking notes from a programming books and highlighting important bits with a Pilot marker. (and they're not reading fundamental stuff)
Just fucking code something.2 -
Learning [framework of your choice] wouldn’t be that hard if the internet were not full of (unnecessarily long) articles, tutorials and answers written with the only purpose of gaining visibility instead of informing the reader.
-
Fuck.. it is hard to stick to "learn-by-doing" when you are not a creative person, and you lack the ideas to go on.
I don't feel like I am learning efficiently enough with reading books..5 -
Learning through documentation.
I learned one thing.... That how I can copy paste any thing in my code and comment it as "magic happens here do not touch."
Yeah thats my code learned from documentation (image below ) -
Today I attended the first half of the WhiteHat challenge at CERN :) one more to go to be a certified pentester! I expected lots of learning, and my expectations were not let down, game on!8

Meshine learning ¯\_(ツ)_/¯7 -
Not learning unit testing... I've heard so many good things about them, but I've never learned how to inple.e t and use them.
Maybe I can start now, can anyone point me in the write direction?4 -
You know when you just spend about three full days learning for the upcoming chemistry exam?
Well I certainly do.
AND THEN THE FUC*ER PUTS SH*T IN THE EXAM THAT HE DID NOT EVER FUC*ING TEACH US.5 -
Whichever learning path you choose, its gotta be a marathon not a sprint. Start off with 30 minutes or an hour every few days. Make it as fun as possible1
-
Was delaying learning a course for quite a long time (felt boring). The finally got the stuff by reading the documentations !
Tell me I am not the only one who thinks reading documentations is way better than taking course (in case of proper documentation ofcourse)2 -
I'm dong it again:
Just learning Python to teach it to someone else.
P.s. I always knew that my hatred of Python was not out of my mere ignorance.17 -
Trying out Exercism - The learning curve is fucking massive - and they don't warn ou about not being able to go to mentored mode from independent mode, and you can''t leave a track to counter this, and can't delete an account...3
-
That I'm Not working on my personal projects after university or work and beeing to lazy to even start learning a new language.
-
Started learning ASP.NET core. It's an amazing experience so far.
PS : I feel like I could not have done this without visual studio.1 -
so i gave in and started learning JavaScript, its not as bad as i thought, really prefer the es6 stuff, makes some things so much simpler.4
-
Disappointed to be an intern at a place where we were given a website project where I'm the only experienced coder. Not learning anything new and I work all day while my team watches videos.4
-
Hearing about something I'm not familiar with and spending most of my nights reading and learning about it, you never know what useful tool you will find
-
When you get lazy about learning new stuff...
I realized this is like a marriage and I'm not spontaneous enough anymore.1 -
My first rant here, I just found out about it, I don't have much of programming background, but it always triggeredmy intetest, currently I am learning many tools, my aim is to become a data scientist, I have done SAS, R, Python for it (not proficient yet though), also working on google cloud computing, database resources and going to start Machine Learning (Andrew Ng's Coursera).
Can anybody advice me, Am I doing it right or not.?2 -
Finding out how not to do it.
An example, learning how to parse HTML, and finding a stackoverflow post with the answer "use regex" triggers tech junkies so much that they actually comment a mostly accepted way of doing something.3 -
Worked with a team of interns learning Swift. They had a really tight deadline, so they decided if they were not sure what the app should do if a nil showed up, they would just force unwrap and let it crash.
-
A wise man once said.
A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again.1 -
This is my understanding of "Machine Learning" in general
There are two sets of data:
1. In first data set, all the properties are known
2. In the second set, some properties are not known.
The goal of the machine learning is to find the value of the unknown properties of the second data set.
We do this by finding (or training) a suitable machine learning model (mathematical, logical or any combination of), that in the first data set, computes the value of the properties, which are unknown in second data set, with minimum error since we already know the real value of those properties.
Now, use this model to predict the unknown properties from the second data set.3 -
How many of you feel you learn something on the job?
As for myself, I learn much more from books than sitting day in, day out at work, doing more or less of the same things.
To me, this whole trial-and-error way of 'learning' is not really learning. I don't subscribe to this dogma. I don't 'learn' by messing up and fixing something. I need a full specification of why something works, when and how. I'm not satisfied by just being a code plumber.
This, next to the fact that most jobs in small startups don't provide a budget for you to expand your knowledge.5 -
So many new developers I know complain about not having the latest gadgets to learn to code. What I loved about learning to code was all you really need is something like Notepad and a few ideas, it's amazing how far you can go!6
-
What I wish to achieve before wk200? For sure learning Rust properly and possibly D. Not going to lie though, I also have quite a few projects deserving a rewrite...
-
Man learning I’m not good at learning new languages, I get to the point where I have the basics of the language ex: Conditional statements, loops, functions, classes, structures, file manipulation, etc but idk what to do after that, is this where I start learning libraries cause I still get the feeling I’m not at that step yet.
Before you ask, yes I know I am heavily over thinking this2 -
I am beyond pissed at my Machine Learning class in college. you would think an advanced topic in Computer Science would require some prior knowledge of the field, but apparently not. A quarter of the class has ZERO programming knowledge, and the professor is basing the class around that. I took this course to learn how to CODE Machine Learning algorithms, not spend weeks upon weeks on learning how to calculate probabilities...2
-
Sometimes when I read old code of mine I'm ashamed. But more often when I read others I just feel better.
(I'm talking about other webdev freelancers, not OS projects or so...) -
I had a CS teacher in college who was constantly learning and testing himself in order to catch up. He was also my favourite teacher ever. Coincidence? I think not.
-
At first, my family was like "Don't waste your time on the computer, in college, you will learn how to code". I didn't listen, I started learning C#, but somehow I ended up learning C++ lol. Then I started with C, assembly, and SystemVerilog.
After they saw how good I was at it. They started supporting me. I don't blame them for not supporting me at first, they were ignorant about the topic, so they were blindly making assumptions. -
Learning C and just wrote a function to reverse chars in a char array (ex. "Hello" -> "olleH") but the array did not change.
It took me way to long to realize: I forgot to divide the length variable by two. So it reversed the array back everytime...6 -
one of the disadvantages of not using windows is no blue screen, another one is high learning rate.6
-
I'm not any kind of developer (yet), but I'm learning and this awesome site realy helped me to understand more about this industry from inside and I want to do this even more than before! =D1
-
First time having Baileys and it does not taste like 17% alcohol. But it tastes good enough to get drunk before learning for exams in the next weeks7
-
No your nested if statements dont make an ai the same way logging into a txt is not machine learning2
-
So the new guy convinces my employer that he is a Machine Learning Expert. Nothing is wrong until He even convinces my employer that he can do Machine Learning with HTML (<==== is not a Programming Language); This is the time my IQ instantly dropped to ```Patrick Star```.8

WHY DONT I GET FUCKING FIRED. I BEG TO GET FIRED. PLEASE FUCKING FIRE ME U DIPSHITS IM NOT EVEN DOING A GOOD JOB HERE AND IM NOT LEARNING ANYTHING USEFUL. HOW CAN A FUCKING DEVOPS JOB BE TO 24/7 CONSTANTLY RUN LINUX COMMANDS AND LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE HELLO????20
-
There are so many interesting and great things to learn in IT, but I have the feeling, none of these is taught at my university 😪4
-
when you start really learning C, not "hello world" C but Makefiles and autotools and libraries... is it me or is almost everything a C library and the rest of the languages are just wrappers for C libraries?1
-
With school starting in a few days, I'm reminded that half our class failed Grade 11 Computer Science, not because it was hard, but because they wanted to play flash games instead of actually learning2
-
Wk26:
The moment you feel you've stopped learning find a new challenge. If changing jobs is scary pick up a side project, but if you're not enjoying or learning from your job, it might be time to move on.2 -
How machine learning works
Interviewer: What's your biggest strength?
Me: I'm fast learner.
Interviewer: What's 11 * 11
Me: 65
Interviewer: not even close. It's 121
Me: It's 1213 -
So I am trying to implement a deep learning paper.
And I started reading, It's fucking unbelievable
First page: maybe I will get it in the second page!!
Second page: what did I miss from the first page?
Third page: Woohw, let me start over.
Now: I am reading about linear algebra and basic probability theories.
I guess this is is why not anyone can be on deep learning research areas and not used by many developers.4 -
Flutter has most pathetic support for background job execution 😡, it's not worth learning, until the framework matures enough7
-
When the professor tells you that learning Android development does not require you to do some actual Android development..... **facepalm**1
-
Senor Dev:That's great that you're learning Docker. It's a great tool and makes life easier.
Me: *Not paying attention* I like whales...1 -
My biggest regret is not spending more time on Math. While I don't think it has hurt me directly, it has certainly decreased the chance of me learning some DL methods.
That and not pursuing a PhD.2 -
You do not own your companies code. Of you hate working at your job, don't let the feeling of responsibility for the codebase keep you there. I keep learning that lesson.
-
!dev
While I'm not all too great with developing things, still learning actually, I am good at breaking things unintentionally.
For instance, I fucked the YouTube app up so badly, even a force stop isn't fixing it.
Gonna try rebooting, see if that helps.2 -
For the first time in my life I removed a wrong commit with git rebase and I did not made a mess.
More then 10 years of using git and keep learning.6 -
Having exams on paper sounds ... archaic.
I am for paper exams. It's not practically efficient but I find myself learning a lot from it!2 -
You want me to be an expert in advanced data structures, algorithms, dbms, Oracle, python, machine learning, J2EE just to develop apps for you? If I had been a master of all trades, I would not have come to you in the first place.2
-
Teachers. We put so much effort in learning, I think it's only fair that you know what you teach. You are supposed to simplify our learning process not make it worse. We don't need a lecture hour to read your ppts.1
-
I love learning by doing.
Building MVPs and prototypes is the best way. Even better if you have a chance to show and share them in front of an audience (peer pressure can be good!).
Share the lessons you've learned and what you've done wrong, it will help many more people than just yourself.
I've been working for an eLearning company for the last 4 years (CloudAcademy.com) and I'm in love with the idea of learning something new every day. And not just coding. Code is "only" a tool to solve problems, and learning something about those problems and fields will make you a better developer. -
What is it with people asking if learning X is good for development of Y? Did your common sense module not fucking load?
Learning a new thing isn't gonna SegFault your brain. If you have the luxury of asking If, just fucking do it, you lazy wobble tit!7 -
So I had this idea on doing some volunteer teaching in programming in the US. I would not say I can teach anything on coding though I can code. Any resources that would be good for learning to teach coding skills to people who may not have that technical background?
Edit: this is for volunteer work. Think inner city and disadvantaged individuals.2 -
I just spent 3 days with 1 or 2 hour of sleep just for learning a new way to code. Not a project it just for learning. And it make me crazy i cant stop thinking about that. And now im not sleeping at all and code almost 24 hours. But i feel a lot of fun while writing a line of code. I enjoyed every sound i made with keyboard.
Im soo happy now i learned a lot of things. I dont know how to stop and i dont want to stop coding.
I dont know what im talking but thanks devrant for letting me post this shit.5 -
This may be a dumb question, but are there any benefits in learning c instead of going straight to c++ for microcontrollers? I'm in my first ee semester and wondered, because we are learning c and java (next semester), but not c++2
-
One would have thought YouTube would have figured out I'm not interested in Grammarly by now. Machine learning at its pinnacle.
Anyone else get a Grammarly advert every second video?10 -
I get it — it’s not fashionable to be part of the overly enthusiastic, hype-drunk crowd of deep learning evangelists, who think import keras is the leap for every hurdle.
-
I am learning foreign languages explicitly to curse when something does not go as planned but more creatively and so people around me are even more frightened haha1
-
Learning aws for months, not enough the company needs to use azure. Learning azure for several months, not enough the company needs to use gcp. Learning gcp for several months, not enough the company needs to use oracle.
When does all of this bullshit ever fucking stop? No matter how much i learn and what i learn it seems like its never good enough. Or its never enough. Its very discouraging. The more i learn the more it appears as if i know nothing16 -
I signed up for a web developer job... I am now making programs in VB.NET
This was not what I was expecting, however I am completely fine with it.
Crash course learning is fun. Just know that the first hundred programs i write will be really unoptimised. -
After much consideration I've decided to learn and use react native over ionic/cordova as I'm going to rewrite most of my views from an existing Web project anyways (if I wanted to make it work with ionic)
I feel anxious and excited at the same time. Hopefully I made the right call.
Anyone here have good experiences switching from ionic to react native?2 -
My goal for the rest of the year and into the new year is to not procrastinate learning/practicing front-end and back-end development.1
-
learning a different language can be difficult sometimes. since i already know other languages, i get them mixed up. putting semicolons, putting spaces even though i shouldnt, putting parenthesis or even forgetting some keywords because in another language, its not necessary. makes it difficult to adjust to the new syntax. but the fun part of learning is having more knowledge and experience.4
-
I feel i need to be specialized in something coz everyone can code now... like u have machine learning engineers and devops/cybersecurity but im not really into either. What other sub fields are there?4

I finally get it. Symfony: The Fast Track (https://symfony.com/doc/6.0/...) is not supposed to be a learning tool.
It's an elaborate joke! Now it all makes sense.1 -
Arrghhh, now it is chatbot (+_+)
I am not even sure if my vuejs codes are in right direction or not and needless to say ES6. But now another task, freaking chatbots. I have trouble following and learning Facebook tools. It confuses the hell out of me every single time. -
Top challenge of my career?
Balance. Money, stress, learning. I've only ever had 1 or 2 at optimal levels.
Currently have OK salary, not much stress, but not learning much. -
Do you guys support today's youth learning how to code? If so, why? If not, why not?
I started coding when I was 11.13 -
Hello sysadmins, silly question but can I consider Python as a serious alternative to powershell/bash? I have always hidden myself from learning bash considering myself not that kind of guy hacking around in Linux. Thanks in advance4
-
My dream! When I remind myself that I'm not where I want to be yet, I get in that ultimate coding-zone. I push myself to be better every time and that gets me coding and learning new things. And of course, red bull ;)

Learning Dart the first time is driving me insane!!! I'm so not used with it's format.
PS: Send help.6 -
I regret becoming a frontend dev ( mostly because I started learning jQuery first and not pure js ) .1

I regret not learning c++ earlier. I learned Java before and now I have to work with mainly c++ for its libs and it took some time to adjust also I've never used Java for anything useful so far.

I'm not really satisfied with any of the major smarthome systems out there, so I'm making my own and using it as a learning experience. What I've learned so far, is that I suck at naming...
Best thing I can come up with is EasyDIYHome....7 -
I want to do something data-science-y.
Gimme project ideas, and where can I get the data for it?
Also, not looking for machine learning, just basic data analysis stuff.
I'm bored.10 -
in class.
professor: "this course is much about learning to read documentation and searching the Internet for solutions. "
me at exam: *writing part of code I learnt from stackoverflow*
...professor failed me at the exam for not using what they taught us during the course.. 😕1 -
That is one thing I hate:
Every second programming tutorial in Youtube is made by Hindu, and unfortunately their spelling is not so good. That is why learning from this tutorial becomes twice difficult and ridiculously funny...
I need a function of searching only videos with great spelling XD
P.S. It's not question of nation, but of spelling12 -
Coding in the brainfuck learning language is pretty funny. Or a coding challenge not for the smoothest running program but for the longest possible compilation time on an IBM Z processor.1

Being tempted by a job offer as an iOS dev that has full (paid) training. Not a fan of apple but heard swift is a nice language (assuming it is swift).
I've spent the last year and a half learning the react way as my first dev job, not sure whether it's beneficial to keep on this path or diversify. -
Advice in building muy first custom PC/workstation.
So the main aim of this computer would be installing Linux, of course! And learning bash.
The second objective is learning Dask and doing some machine learning.
Budget, I dont want the must expensive stuff, because it usually costs double and doesnt perform double.. Second or third tier would be ok.
*this is not a gaming pc5 -
CS wants me to do INCREDIBLY BASIC Scratch 1.4 (not even the new web one) instead of learning Rust.
It's second-year CS (UK), but seriously?3 -
This week was so not productive! Learning c# on the job is hard and I had hoped that it would go faster🙃1

Remembers a time when I was considered non-technical founder and not taken seriously as credible tech company leader by smart ass VCs
Years invested in learning, experimenting, building. Now somewhat capable.
Considered too technical to be understood by dumb ass VCs.

Anyone else experience "coder's block"?
No, this is not burn out. I've been learning alot of cool new stuff lately...but no clue what to start doing with it.1 -
tell me..?
if i am NOT doin any proj and i am just learning and solving problems on competitive websites like codechef , hackerank etc.
is it a bad thing ?
or should i just continue learning this way?
P.S I AM TRYING TO BE A SELF TAUGHT DEV !12 -
Not going insane due to lack of documentation.
In retrospect it may have been that I was still learning to properly apply and read docs so eh.3 -
Continuing to learn k8s ecosystem and to achieve acceptable level
With trying eventually Helm, Argo CD and even trying to use not managed setup for k8s.
Going though books to find out theory about being SRE.
And about data intensive apps.
Learning and trying Kafka
Learning and trying FastAPI and diving in generally to async python ecosystem
Learning Go.
Learning few more books to increase code quality and its compositioning.
Getting more practice in monitoring and logging systems with applicating them to k8s.3 -
Learning Java properly while doing a project as a student and reading what I had written just weeks ago - I had put all my logic into the DAOs, not thinking of creating a package for it 😌1
-
It is good for someone who wants to learn. Someone who want to know what the benefit, pros and cons of the tech that they are not familiar with.
It is not good for someone who think they can get a job after they finished.
In this industry, you never stop learning. -
Learning how to leaning. It is not emphasized enough in work place. Reading, speeding, read code, speed reading code. Comprehension of code, grit, growing mind set.

Hey everyone my name is nixon. I'm very new to programming. I jUst started learning go, because I'm planning on becoming a blockchain developer. It's been a little tough learning go. Do you guys have any advice or suggestions for me? I feel like I'm not getting it as fast.5

Wish everyone could understand that it's not learning the programming language or the 'best practices' that makes you good it's understanding how things work together and how to mix them to create new things that do what you want is the real engineering2

Even if the solution is working, does not mean it is the correct and way of doing it. One can save a lot of time and effort by learning from others instead of sticking to his/her ego.

I understand that front end frameworks are important when scaling an app/project but it’s not a necessity for small student projects.
Can someone make me understand how a student can make use of the frontend frameworks not just for the sake of learning it but the framework actually being a necessity4 -
## Learning k8s
Sooo yeah, 2 days have been wasted only because I did not reset my cluster correctly the first time. Prolly some iptables rules were left that prevented me from using DNS. Nothing worked...
2 fucking days..
2 FUCKING DAYS!!! F!!!11 -
JUST when i thought i learned everything in X language, i accidentally discover a whole new dimension about it i never knew existed. this fucking irritates me. Fuck youuu
if you tell me i shouldn't be mad because i would just be learning more, Fuck youu tooo
i dont have infinite amount of Fucking time
I have to go forward and finish stuff and not just endlessly keep learning and learning and learning and BOOM SHIT IM 80 YEARS OLD ALREADY
Fuck youuuu
The point of fucking learning is not to continue learning even after u learned the point is to stop and apply what you learned in the real world
this is the same shit as a greedy person would chase money.
• if you gamble, you will always be poor
• if you are greedy, you will never have enough
• if you keep learning without applying, you will never do anything10 -
I don't know about you, but ever since I joined devrant I started learning JavaScript frameworks (because everyone talks about it) but I gotta tell you I am not a fan: I prefer programming algorithms and solve ctfs(deep into this). Who's with me?1
-
+++ THEY ARE WRITING TYPE DEFINITIONS +++
THEY ARE UNDOGGING THEMSELVES. THIS IS NOT A DRILL: THEY ARE LEARNING SOME GOOD FUCKING PRACTICES15 -
Well apparently devs won't last.
Now hear me out without any prior judgement.
Machine learning is booming up at a rapid rate and not long enough for it to formulate meaning to words like humans do. That's when the downhill for devs would start.13 -
Have a curious mind. Yes, the kind that allegedly killed the cat.
When your natural instinct is to spend every idle moment learning something new, to plateau is not likely.2 -
I just learned C and I have created some projects like Parking System and Library Management System. My problem is I don't know mathematics and I want to learn DataStructures & Algorithms and become pro in it. In the whole September I will still be focusing on C and create more projects. I have started learning Mathematics today from High School level to College level. I thik maths will take 1 year to complete. After September in the October I want to start learning C++ and finish C++ till the end of Dec 2019. I want to know that do I have to first finish my maths learning which will take 1 year then I should start learning Data Structures and Algorithms? As I said I want to become a professional in Algorithms. I think its not possible to learn DS&A yet I have to wait 1 year till I finish learning my Maths. I can't do more with C & C++ without knwoing DS&A? If I started learning DS&A with C++ in the future then I can't become good at algorithms? I want to do competitive programming and be at Top 1 of Hacker Rank and other sites like this.7

I am having a fun time learning Angular. It’s way different from React.
I do like the css scoping a lot. Also it’s strange to not have to deal with state.
I am learning it because I see the job market requiring it as opposed to React.
Any React peeps feel me?3 -
New Year's vows:
- not waste time
- maximum productivity
- maximum speed
- cloak engaged (ok, just kidding)
- finally finish learning Java
- learn enterprise programming
- not be a jerk to people (bleh)4 -
Dart is interesting. Had fun learning that language eventhough it's not as famous as other languages like js or python.

Learning to play the piano right now(hey, SOMETHING has to be done about all that coding stress, right??).
In one sentence - Learning music is easy, but it's surely not simple.2 -
Last week I've been really wanting to start learning a new language. Not the programming type but the original type. Mainly for career opportunities, as I am getting into 2nd year of a 5 year cs curriculum.
Already know : English, Greek (native)
Currently deciding between:
French
Indian
Chinese (not Korean, maybe Japanese?)
Opinions? :)8 -
Ok I'm totally lost...

Do you think it is worth learning functional programming and specifically haskell. It seems like a really good concept, but a lot of people claim that it's not applicable in real scenarios.12 -
Not learning proper OOP in college.
Having to learn that to fix some projects was a real pain back then.1 -
What Frameworks should I learn in 2018?
PS: I currently do not use any (cos I have been learning basic syntaxes)14 -
You know why I know that Francois Chollet's Deep Learning with Python is a good book for beginners?
He takes the idea of A.I in the context of Machine Learning and Python, and makes people realize that we are not going to have big tiddy android girls from her till McCarthy knows when.
Well that sucks. One of my sole purposes behind getting to AI was to have me own Jarvis that could help me build 2B.
Oh well.......3 -
I'm not gonna lie when im learning new modules or OOP or get errors or something I get intimidated and feel stupid for asking for help
-
lol every time I look at actively maintained code on GitHub
Thing is, there'll always be things I don't know. One needs to learn that. However, it's not an excuse to stop learning, so just keep learning every day and be confident in what you know -
Not learning to unit test as I was embarrassed that'd I'd missed it in college.
Now, thanks to a great ruby module I've taken this year, I'm leaning towards TDD. I really enjoy it. -
Dreaming in Code!
I know very little code at this point. Mostly HTML, CSS and a sprinkling of JavaScript and Python.
That was clearly enough for my brain to generate some imaginary lines and fill the gaps in a night of wild dreams.
I guess any code language works much like human languages with grammars, vocabularies and punctuations.
So dreaming in code isn't all that odd?!
Whether you're learning Japanese or JavaScript, Portuguese or Python, you need to read, repeat and regurgitate.
I hope that's what my mind attempted last night. Not the most visually inspiring of dreams, but certainly vivid.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Has anyone tried applying language learning tricks to learning coding?8 -
Is it wrong that I hate Java?
I tried learning it before, couldn't get myself to, I thought there was something wrong with me, maybe im not open to learning new languages
Then I got introduced to F#, Loved it! Even moved portions of pet projects to it
Looked at Java again
Still hate it.
Advice?2 -
When you guys are learning something/learning to make something, are you usually looking it up, watching a video, or reading a book? Or are you trying it on your own without knowledge on how?
I tend to either learn to do something from tutorials or books. But if I feel like I have an idea I’ll try it but then hit the books or internet if not.
How do you guys tackle learning something you haven’t before?8 -
I wanna cool robot sidekick,
The more irritable the better, like bender from futurama or K2 from rogue one. (Even murderous maniac of a an ai like hal9000 and skynet is fine)
The machine learning technologies aren't just there yet though, they can be irritable but not because of their smart ass answers just the opposite really.
I will need a team with 100+ people that are experts in neurology AND machine learning. Also 10 years.. we will get there !1 -
Any resources for self-learning algos in Python?
Python maybe to high level so C# would be good to.
Clarification I am looking for resources AI learning itself and not me learning it.2 -
I learned today that learning programming in MVC architecture has nothing to do with programming but understanding objects, layers, architecture etc.
Please dear tutorial creators, introduce me to the subject with explanations of those and not with some code of mvc or whatever. -
I know devrant is not the place to ask this but I didn't know what else to do....I very often have doubts about weather I like programming or not even when I started learning programming 2 years ago...Does this imply that I don't really like it? Because I believe that if you really like something than you don't have doubts about it but am not sure if I am correct or not.8

Hey I need some advice
if i'm planning on going into IT Security with like ethical hacking and stuff like that and I already am learning Python + have a decent knowledge of CSS & HTML what should I start learning next while I'm bored at internship

Not learning how to study and focus on something at High Schools. I'm learning the hard way, i often don't have time to plan a thing as i wish, i just have to do a quick plan, hope for the best, and eventually learn something in the end.

I'm getting a bit bored with web development as it's what I do 5 days a week so I'm thinking of learning something completely different just for fun. Is learning ios development a good idea? I not planning to ever do it seriously or as a career6

I am a mobile dev. Wants to step into backend world by learning python.. django perhaps. I am not sure myself. If someone can point towards good tutorials or links, which takes low learning curve in picking up things.. Thanks.

How can I avoid coding in trial/error when learning a new framework (recompiling and testing)? I’m learning Unity and find myself constantly recompiling just to test if a single line works. This adds up to a lot of wasted time - am I missing something or not doing something properly?2
-
Am a Computer Science student. And learned C, C++ and Java. And right now learning C# through online tutorials and practicing side by side.
So my question is, should I learn bash shell or not? Is it worth learning it? Or should I learn powershell scripting? Or should I don't learn either of them.6 -
My biggest dev regret is not starting earlier. I started learning how to code only 5 years ago, when I was 19. God, I wish I started earlier.

Learning Pulumi with Python. Not a fan of Py, but I know my way around.
There's a dev cluster. My colleague asked me to modify Pulumi scripts for cost optimization, as the project transitioned to maintenance mode and is no longer needed on daily basis. Since I'm learning, he asked me laughing not to delete/change the static IP and not to delete the cluster.
I'm currently recreating the cluster anew for the third time :)
Gotta say, destroying a cluster is only scary the first time.4 -
My morning productivity so far: compiling some code while a full-length show I edited renders. (Not pictured: the machine learning model I'm also training.)

Happy Teacher's Day
Who thought learning would stop after School/College? Have been learning since childhood (though not as much as I should) and it will continue forever. I thank all the Teachers, Class Mates, My Parents, My Brother, My Friends, My Colleagues, My Seniors, My Juniors, My Managers and other Superiors. Everyone contributed their part 🙏🙏🙏
Edit - Totally Forgot Google and Co. Thank you won't suffice

How has your experience been with Udemy courses?
I've taken three courses among which a low quality one and I'm not impressed at all:
- not in-depth enough
- no quality control on courses
I think that I learn much more from official documentation (MDN, books,..) than from such courses in general.
I've taken Lynda.com courses and they are of the highest quality and learning value. Lynda.com was amazing and professional. Pluralsight, same thing.
I have to learn how to filter courses better.
Onwards to more learning..4 -
advice: while learning a new programming language either do not be proud of your first accomplishment or do not look for solutions of other fellows afterwards.6

I'm majoring in comp sci but I feel like I'm not learning what I need to be a good dev.

A note to the team designing recommendations on google ads:
Just because I search for deep learning concepts for personal learning, does not mean I will be purchasing every paid online data science course on the planet.7 -
thought of the day :
machine learning does not totally automate the end-to-end process of data to insight (and action), as is often suggested. We do need human intervention. And having the right mix of specialists is equally important as they have the expertise to build prototype projects in different business lines. Thus, one must hire the right team in the context of her organization to ensure an assured path towards success.
Besides, it is important to note that organizations don’t have machine learning problems. Instead, there are just business problems that companies might solve using machine learning. Therefore, identifying and articulating the business problem is mandatory before investing significant effort in the process and before hiring the machine learning experts.1 -

I keep getting emails from my programming teacher to "do more challenge programs!" Outside of the homework where I already have to do this shit
I think I'm gonna take this weekend to do the whole workbook they provided and see what they say then. Probably that I'm not learning properly.
I don't dislike this form of practical learning. I'm sure it's very representative of work programming, because the biggest challenge of these programs is mainly the bugs VB Net provides.. -
I'm moving my React development to Linux VM as something is messed up in Windows npm...
I would like an IDE somewhat similar in features to Webstorm.
What's a good one? Needs to be GUI, not vim, don't feel like going thru the learning curve.20 -
Ok, you've got some free time and a folder full of bookmarks to get through the subjects you need for that cert....
....but it has been busy these past few months. One day out of your holiday just to chill and do nothing, then you can get to work....
....you have 9 days. 2 out of the 9 is ok just to relax, it is a holiday after all....
....ok, your going back to work in 2 days and the most you've done is read some semi-related articles that were shared on Twitter. Sort it out....
....24 hours to go, you've essentially done nothing productive. I guess I'll go back to fitting it in at work or convincing myself I'll do it when I get home after a long day.
Anyone else struggle with this? Not just for certs in particular, but just learning in general. -

Today checked my learning time tracker. I have spent already 80 hours for learning angularjs. And I still am not able to write unit test without errors. What the fuck. How many hours more do I need to finnaly be able to write unit tests without any problem?
Like today getting
An error was thrown in afterAll\nSyntaxError: Unexpected token 'export'
and I do not even use afterAll() funciton so they give error somewhere from the inside of libraries. Why they do that? why cannto they give easy to understand error?
Everytime I sit to write unit test for learning, all the time I feel I will not understand. And I am right everytime. Damn. That makes me need to force motivate myself. I want to see results, not sit at the same place so many time.18 -

One of my coworkers told me I'd be interested in machine learning, but I'm not conviced
Is it really that great ?8 -
I am not a very experienced developer, so naturally I don't know many fundamental things. My thinking around a lot of the necessary things is that the answer should come to me according to the need. So an oversimplified example could be, say I'm solving a Dynamic programming problem, I should not need to know the algorithm beforehand I can maybe invent it. This thinking stops me learning a lot things because I feel like then when I learn a pattern I will restrict my thought process within the knowledge I have and not think beyond it. I feel like that I am doing the dumb mistake of learning things bt heart and not understanding.
Does anyone felt the same? What your experience says about this?12 -
So I have a STUPID question about Machine Learning.
And I am being serious when I say this.
I want to get into machine learning but I really don’t want to accidentally create the AI that kills us all.
I’m not trying to boast my abilities or anything I’m not that great but I just
one don’t completely understand how machine learning works?
And two how do I keep it from learning more than I want it to??
I’m not trying to be stupid I’m just trying to understand so I don’t make anything that I regret.17 -

It's not that I hate learning or something, I just hate wasting my time doing things that don't matter. -
Learning how to build micro services using Spring Cloud. As I'm not familiar with this architecture, the company's lead engineer suggested me to do research & development on it, recommended me to follow official guide lines before involving me to the current under development project.
What's your advice regarding - what to keep in mind while learning micro service architecture (could be in one sentence)? It will be helpful to me. ^_^ Thank you.2 -

But later on trying learning I felt in love ... -
Just Started learning unsupervised learning algorithms, and i write this: Unsupervised Learning is an AI procedure, where you don’t have to set the standard. Preferably, you have to allow the model to take a chance at its own to see data.
Unsupervised Learning calculations allow you to make increasingly complex planning projects contrasted with managed learning. Albeit, Unsupervised Learning can be progressively whimsical contrasted and other specific learning plans.
Unsupervised machine learning algorithm induces patterns from a dataset without relating to known or checked results. Not at all like supervised machine learning, Unsupervised Machine Learning approaches can’t be legitimately used to loss or an order issue since you have no proof of what the conditions for the yield data may be, making it difficult for you to prepare the estimate how you usually would. Unsupervised Learning can preferably be used to get the essential structure of the data.
