Good news: Today my app reached 1 million daily users. 😃😃😃💰
Bad news: It started out as a side project and my shitty code is not scaling well at all. 🙃19 -
Interviewer: "I checked your Github, your side projects look very interesting! Tell me about your other hobbies."
Me: "other hobbies?"11 -
A client who I freelance for just asked if they could invest in one of my side projects.
This is the best day of my programming career 😊9 -
They're giving multiple projects to work on and it's so fucking hard to remember workflow of 4-5 projects while working on side projects as well10
-
The cool thing about side projects is you can do whatever you want.
The shitty thing is you never complete whatever you want.7 -
- Think first, write later;
- Do not rush into purchasing servers. You might not need them for another 10 months;
- It takes away a lot of family time to do side projects;
- NOT playing any games saves tremendous amounts of time. Also applies to watching TV;
- If you get stuck - get some sleep. Morning brings you better ideas;
- Write proper abstractions or you'll end up refactoring everything way more often that you'd like;
- Side projects need a loo-ooooot of your will and determination19 -
Évolution.. so basically I have tried to grow a beard but it was too annoying and too scratchy so I dropped.. like all those side projects I guess...7
-
Side projects what got me job three times. Move your lazy ass and work on your projects AND actually finish at least one 😒15
-
Finals done.
Other People: "Yeah, time for fun, friends and parties!"
Me: "Yeah, time for side projects!"11 -
Do side projects, even if they're small. If you already have completed side projects, show them off. Employers love to see your efforts and eat that up.10
-
HR: How many years you've been developing on Xamarin ?
Me: Three years, with many side projects
HR: So, you're familiar with C#?
Me: No, I've been coding in "hieroglyphs".9 -
Interviewer: "I'll checked your GitHub, your side projects looks very interesting! Tell me about your other hobbies. "
Me:"Other hobbies? "8 -
A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -
Work has been very stressful lately...
But after one week of vacation (and two in front of me) I am ready to get back to my side-projects again...
coffee: checked
music: checked
Lets GO! This feels so good! I am glad to be back ;-)19 -
10 more days at my current job.
then: 4 weeks off to rest and get my side projects online.
then: start my new job.
life is good sometimes3 -
Get idea, buy domain, make git repo, let the domain expire, post memes about how side projects are always abandoned!3
-
Want to finish my little friend for a long time now. He can dance Michael Jackson's moonwalk for now.
Idea was to use the sonar sensor to switch dancing styles but he is still blind :(11 -
The moment you turn down a paid side project, because you rather work on your own side projects...1
-
Someone who noticed that I do programming as a hobby and therefore set harder work for me in class. He also encourages my side projects and at the moment is helping me build a native app for the school :)2
-
I learned that the technologies I use for my side projects are cooler than the side projects themselves.
-
Universal law of side projects:
The motivation to invest more time in side projects is inversely proportional to the free time you have!
When you have a deadline, you want to work on 10 new things, as soon as you are completely you just want to a lazy sloth!4 -
Three weeks of vacation. Finally I‘ll have time to delay my side projects every day until the end of vacation.4
-
So, my UpWork account request is rejected, with a reason that
"already many freelancers with a similar skillset to yours".
In skills I entered
"AngularJS, ASP.NET MVC, .NET Framework, C#, jQuery, Semantic UI, Bootstrap"
Then I resubmitted the request with by adding blockchain and Ethereum.
Again rejected.
What should I do 😫
I guess I never can start freelancing.21 -
Sitting down for an entire weekend with a couple of friends, just to work on a side project.
No deadline, just fun. And beer, lots of beer 😅6 -
Side projects - Something you would like to spend more time on, but since you can't, you will never get them done.2
-
Stuck at a concert for band my girlfriend likes on a Friday night... so many side projects could be worked on right now1
-
Just logged in to my old Bitbucket account.
It's a huge cemetery of side projects..
Some of them are unknown now..
Some others were glorious..
And some of them were killed by other projects, loosing the war of side projects..
RIP my old projects.. RIP2 -
Hahahaha, good one.
About 20 side projects by now and quite some projects requiring more frontend skills than I have!2 -
Created a poll to chose which side project to carry on during holidays, came up with a new one instead.
Story of my life.1 -
Just in case you guys run out of ideas for your side projects, black mirror will always be there for inspiration.6
-
Goals for 2018:
0. Finish some side projects
1. Take python skills to the next level
2. Start a new bigger project.
3. Dive into machine learning2 -
I rewrote my static website generation from jekyll to custom python code over single night.
Literally all jekyll plugins I use including seo, rss, syntax highlighting inside markdown content, sitemap, social plugins, css sass, all of it.
Now it’s around 400 lines of python code that I understand completely. I didn’t touch any existing templates and after comparing output I got even better results now and it’s working faster.
I skipped drafts as I don’t need them now.
Why ? Cause now I can make better generator for my side projects that can include some partial website generation, better modification and date handling, tree structure, etc.
What I will do now is that I will parse bunch of content to create markdown files that will be sucked by this generator to create static web pages that will flood internet lol.
Still I didn’t believe it was possible to rewrite all of it so quickly. I sit yesterday around 4pm and finished around 6am.
I started thinking that maybe I am crazy and no one can help me.9 -
All these developers complaining about not being able to finish the million side projects they have and I'm sitting here wishing I was creative enough to have one.4
-
When you find the most incredible jacket ever in a vintage shop but don't have enough $$$. So you spend the next week doing freelance projects on the side of your day job, clocking as little as 1.5 hrs sleep some nights, only to find said jacket gone when you return TT_TT2
-
Nothing like staying late at work to finish other people's work that they can't get done in time because they were doing side projects. Nevermind that I have two huge deadlines myself. Getting really tired of cleaning up other people's messes.4
-
Quarantine and unemployment gave me opportunities to do side projects, here is another one I’ve done recently and I think you guys will like it
It is an image mosaic that preserves features based on color gradient, and tries to use as many photos as possible instead of just repeatedly using same picture over and over.
Here is the link: https://github.com/txstc55/...
For those who care about my minesweeper game, I’m working on submitting it to steam and make it a free game.2 -
I am always looking forward to the weekend to have some time to work on my side projects, and then I can't get my ass up to do it.1
-
Who here programs when they're not at work? If you do, do you have your own side projects or games? I'm just curious 😁14
-
• Plan out everything by taking notes on the rough functionality of the project and how it could be done in a preferably simple way
• Writing code, but documentating it while doing so
• Also trying to write clean code so it can be more easily built upon
• Also keeping everything simple. If I'm using nasty, unreadable one-liners because of efficiency advantages, I'm putting a comment there for what could alternatively be used + explaining it
• Abandon it because side projects never get done1 -
Thanks Firebase! I dont have to buy a 5$ server and install php mysql etc.. anymore. It is super easy create something for one-page one-day side projects! I am so happy..2
-
I have a habit of leaving random TODOs in random files of projects I work on. Then, when I come back to work on the projects I display a list of all TODOs and try to implement them only to find out that I already implemented everything and forgot to delete the TODOs, on the positive side I feel like I accomplished a lot without actually doing anything 😂😂😂
-
If you are working on multiple projects a great tool to make you very productive and keep organized is a simple checklist.
For many years I have jotted one down each and every morning listing what I want to accomplish that day. I even include simple items. Crossing each task out as I complete it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Checklists have enabled me to complete projects at work and many free and commercial side projects including software and technical books.
Do you use checklists? If there is a particular type you like?15 -
Expectation: I'm going to make an app that would remind me to finish my side projects.
Reality: I'm going to make an app that would remind me to finish the app that would remind me to finish the app that would remind me to finish the...
*stack overflow*1 -
1- Copy/Paste (code)
1- Googling before trying to fix a bugs by myself first.
1- Never finish my side projects.
2- (Worst) Still doing all the above.3 -
Allowing programming to take over my life; if it's not work, it's side projects; forgetting to live a life away from work in some form.2
-
Finish all my on-going side projects that have been left to gather dust due to lack of time and resources...
They may not be any good however they are fun to work on when I can. -
How do you deal with a problem that feels completely over your head? I want to develop side projects but sometimes I have trouble starting/continuing when I feel like I can’t find a solution after hours of research.
Who/where do you turn to to find solutions when you run into this problem? I feel like I lose determination when I run into a wall I can’t get around.12 -
My (optimistic) brain at 11:30pm right before bed: "You should totally wake up extra early tomorrow to FINALLY finish that last 5% of your side project that has taken you 10x longer to do than the first 95%!"
My (sleepy) brain at 7:00am: *Hits snooze.* "Eh, there's always tomorrow!"2 -
Fuck it, implemented another idea: image voronoi, it computes a voronoi diagram over the input image, each cell is then populated with the average color inside that cell
https://txstc55.github.io/ImageVoro...
This is an image with the get high option on
I’m so productive and I’m proud of myself6 -
Hold on, people actually finish side projects? Personal side projects? Am I the only developer who procrastinated side projects to the point that I forget about them?3
-
TFW when one of your side projects that you couldn't get approval for 1 additional resource magically creates work for 11 IBM GS assholes. Isn't application maintenance supposed to reduce headcount?
Fuck em.
🦄🔫 -
It's looks like this weeks "Weekly Group Rant" is trolling all the developers who have side projects that never finished.
1. CMS like WordPress
2. MVC framework like Laravel
3. Android App like Tinder
and... list goes on.
#1, #2 and few others are still stuck on index page.2 -
jQuery < 3.4.0 is a known moderate severity vulnerability now and Github just send me about 20 alert mails for repos which are using jQuery that I had used for side projects.
Like thanks but damn.2 -
1. Plan your work
2. Plan new skills to learn every year
3. Stackoverflow is your best friend
4. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions...
5. ... but make sure not to ask too many of them
6. Don't get burned on one single topic, find other projects to work in parallel or even better work on side projects in your spare time -
Dear Dark Side #2
Open company projects on all screens
Open your hobby project bottom left screen
Code without guilt
Update company backlog3 -
Dev goals for 2018? Oh my..
#1: Never have to post my own question on Stack Overflow.
#2: Stop fixing everyone's computer for free.
#3: Stop coding while intoxicated (at home worry - don't worry ;)
#4: More side projects.
and..
#5: Buy more coffee varieties 😂😂😍 -
To all the grown up devs. Since you have had quite an experience of naming variables and side projects, did you find it easy to name your own child? 😃21
-
Quick question, how do you guys find the energy/motivation to create side projects?
Currently, I'm working around 8 hours a day and afterwards I can't really think about getting on the PC as I know that I will burn out eventually and end up messing up the following work day.
Do you take a shorter work day? Do you work on non IT related side-projects? Maybe someone wants to discuss on how to avoid burn-outs and still have fun while working and doing side-projects? :) All ideas are welcome for this topic!11 -
I'm learning nginx and it's simplying the way I think about web projects.
I used to think that when I used a server side framework, then that should be the master and all should go through it. Noob me.
I used to put client side projects (like create-react-app of vue-cli projects) right inside the server side project.
But with nginx you can just route subpaths to different places, then instead of having, let's say, the react project inside rails, they would be in separate git projects.
In fact, I no longer need to restrict myself to a single server framework.
I love several aspects of rails. I love several others of node. And if I need multithreaded performance, I'd very much use something like phoenix or go.
Again, with nginx, you setup subpaths with the `location` directive in the same server and voila, a no CORS setup, cookies shared and homogenous versatile website.7 -
It's kinda nice to have a long weekend for a change to work on my endless list of unfinished side projects and code what I want to code, and not having to use fucking Windows 11 on a slow-ass work laptop.
-
I like to stay home and code day and night on my side projects. I don't want to go to work. I wish I had the money to fulfill my passion.
Fuck money, fuck bills3 -
Best: actually started to work on side projects, they are not just discarded ideas on the paper anymore, so excited about this one
Worst: legacy bolognese app nobody understands and doesn't have documentation coupled with weird API also without any documentation -
Rainy days are when I'll program with one monitor. I'll bring my laptop to bed, sprawl out on my heated blanket, brew some tea; and work on side projects6
-
Why do I get the urge to do 3-4 side projects just when I don't have time for neither of them and when I had time to do them I was just doing nothing all day...4
-
I'm a developer, but also a father of 2 kids. I love spending time with them, but sometimes I also like to work on my side projects. And besides that, after a long day of work, even if I have spare time, I also like to lay down on the couch and watch Netflix.
How do you other full time developer / parents out there cope with your own personal projects?9 -
Netlify.
The only one of them which will build your frontend for you and can handle a custom HTTPS domain in one click.
Perfect for spontaneous side projects, especially when they added form handlers.
Too bad it’s blocked here in Russia.4 -
Oh yeah 🙌🏼 So here is the other thing! Many of us work on side projects where we build awesome stuff in our spare time. We don't get much publicity, userbase or conversions as we are not marketing people. So go ahead and write short desc about your product along with website link if you have any. Product screenshot is most welcome 😜 Don't forget to tag post with "mystartup" 🙌🏼 Looking forward to see awesome projects.4
-
Weekend is almost here. Are you working on any interesting side projects? I am creating blog content, coding an alert system and speed walking a 5k. Enjoy!7
-
One of my screens is currently not woking (out of three).
BECAUSE THIS STUPID ADAPTER IS NOT WORKING!!!
So I hang the ERD for my side projects on it... it's nice to have it on hand imo😎 -
Three years into my "on the side" consulting business, I actually turned a profit! Most of my business "expenses" are my personal AWS pet projects, certification exam fees, and my hosted Gmail accounts. I'm super excited :)4
-
Is it just me, or is it extremely frustrating that we get so little time for our side projects? I can only manage like 3 hours every night, losing up on sleep.. 😢5
-
Side projects teach you more than anything, I learnt all the new android technologies by working on my side projects1
-
I had so much fun working on my side projects this weekend that now I'm sad to spend next 5 days on client projects.3
-
In june 2018 I am going to get my software developer diploma! I am very excited about it. But for now the workload is just getting higher and higher.
Therefore I think I am going to be less active on here for a while.
But before that I would like to introduce you to a new app two colleagues and I wrote to help students in similar situations.
https://beta.outcobra.school
It is a Website that allows you to manage all your study / school related stuff in one place.
It would be great if some of you guys would give it a try.
We appreciate all your feedback!
But it's a side project and still in beta... so please do not expect it to be perfect (yet, we are trying to get there...)
PS It's completely open source just search for outcobra on github. Feel free to open up as many issues as you like2 -
Went to make progress on a small side project I started and ended up just building a brand new animation system for all my other projects...
This is why I never finish anything.. -
I don't know if this was the worst interview I've ever had, but a technical director is looking at my resume, then asks, "So you like programming?"
me: "Uhm... yes, very much so. I typically have at least 4 or 5 side projects going at once on top of my full time job."
Interviewer: "tell me about one."
I tell him, and this process reported 4 more times, as if he wanted to be sure I had 4-5 side projects going... it was almost a little bit like meeting with Peter Gregory from silicon valley, but not quite as awkward.1 -
My goal for 2019 is to finally get into game development and release my first game on itch.io!
Also I want to finish a few side-projects, as always...1 -
https://twitter.com/captainsafia/...
This twitter thread got my thinking. Most of the code I’ve written in my professional life has been proprietary. My job also tends to run over the 9-5 band for various reasons depending on the current ongoing projects. When I get home I still have a house to run and a family to tend to. As such my GitHub has been mostly untouched since university some years ago. I’ve tried committing to a few oss projects but I just can’t find the time. However, it is an *expectation* in our industry that you have published projects and lots of public GitHub commits if you want to be recruited by another company. No other industry works this way and this is crazy and unfair4 -
I have a random question. Does it make me a less of a developer if I say no to a embedded side project proposed by a friend?
I mean I'm all into side projects n building something cool but hardware and embedded stuff isn't something I like or feel passionate about.3 -
A taste in college with punchcards but mostly on Commodore 64 and IBM 5050 using BASIC and dBASE II. Automated my company from paper to systems and developed many side projects. Still creating 😀
-
So... umm...
Just remembered my Informatics teacher left me and my friend a side project to do by the end of summer:
The task is to replicate the game "Minesweeper" in a C# form.
Now, I never actually even understood that game when I played it, how the hell can I program that? ;-;
Well okay, yeah, I might have to actually start looking into it... but freak, it's almost the end of summer already, and I'm still on vacation... my fault I guess. ;—;7 -
My ideal job is something that I don't consider a job. I would enjoy to be a freelancer and work on my side projects every once in a while.2
-
Being made redundant from my first dev job this morning.
Might as well make it a positive thing though! I've now got time for a few side projects and open source contributions!1 -
When you're trying your hands with Machine learning but get stuck with responsive layout in one of your side projects. Ultra confidence killer.2
-
!rant
How do you come up with side projects? I'm currently looking for a side project that will be useful for me, an maybe for others in the long run.
Any suggestions? What do you think the market needs right now?
Keep in mind I'm currently a student so I don't have a lot of money to spend on investments.5 -
Not really a rant, but working on a side project alone is tiring 😴.
It has been 4 days and all I have made is this page and login12 -
A system to keep track of all my side projects, so that I can find enough time and motivation to complete at least some of them (but how will I ever complete this one?).
-
Meeeeh I playing TESO one more time and I'm in a vacation week but I have some side projects. I'm so hesitating on what to do today aaaah
Side projects vs Video games.
My eternal dilemma2 -
For me side projects have been things I'll make to do something that others will use. Some people call it innovation, some call it side business. But that's how i look at side projects. So the points below are more to do with entrepreneurial experiences.
1. If there are more people involved, ensure that there is work for everybody (also level of commitment is tested by how much they put in). Also have as varied set of skills as possible. So that areas are well defined in terms of scope of work and areas of expertise.
2. Put in some money. Money is super glue. It will ensure that you're committed to the thing. Things change when decent amount of money is involved. You're invested, as may be others.
3. Learn something as an intention. This has nothing to do with the learnings you'll get on the way. This one seems obvious, but nevertheless needs to be said.
4. Set timelines and deadlines. Ask someone else to check on whether you're keeping on to your deadlines or not.
5. Don't go live without proper testing.
6. Make something you feel strongly about. The path will be exciting and clear.
7. Talk to people to get their feedback on everything. You may not like what's told to you. Listen dispassionately. Absorb everything. Feel miserable. But listen and think about it after sleeping over it.
8. Continuation of above point. Talk to varied set of people in terms of backgrounds. You would be surprised as to how differently people think.
9. Ask for help when stuck. Kill your ego and be vulnerable.
10. Check out what's already available. What value are you adding. And make it! -
Originally wanted to get a head start on work since gonna be out Monday... And don't want to be distracted while working on it... But UAT db was down.
So spent all morning working on side projects like a password manager because we're not allowed to use keepass...2 -
You guys, who despite crazy commute and work hours, still find time and energy for side projects: I salute you. You're phenomenal. Teach me your ways4
-
I always want to work on a bazillion side-projects but don't have enough time because college, work, etc. Now that I have all the time in the world to work on side-projects I have zero motivation and just waste my time on YouTube.
This sucks.9 -
Oh that looks pretty let me try.
Ow God why !!
....
Ah....that makes sense
Obsess over it for months
Make failed side projects with it.
Ad to cv -
-Mum: 'you start a new side project like every two weeks, but you almost never finish one'
-Me: 'i am finishing them, but other than these projects, i have to earn a living to be able to pay my dorm etc. and i have to study besides that ..' -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
Need motivation as a starting point. Forget about finishing side projects, need the motivation to start one first!2
-
How many of you get late to your office/college/school bcoz of working late night on your side project.
I missed my 1st lecture today as well...4 -
I want to start a new website that I can use as a hub for all my side projects.
Will double as a portfolio site but mostly it will just let me share my ideas with friends.3 -
Just "finished" a side project (I know right, unprecedented) to be graced immediately afterward with another approach to vastly improve one of its features. Well shit, now I HAVE to implement it otherwise it'll just bug the shit out of me for the rest of time!
WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME BRAIN! JUST LET ME FINISH MY SHITTY SIDE PROJECTS WITH PEACE AND QUIET! -
Side projects are one of the biggest battery booster you can have.
For me it's common to get burnt out with fixing a bug or refactoring some pretty old logic, and working in side projects is a nice break to recharge the batteries without necessarily getting your mind totally out of programming. It doesn't matter if they are yours our someone else's, they can do wonders.
(Also, it's good to learn different stuff from what you are used to, like frontend developer working on some back-end logic in a side project)1 -
So here are my goals for 2019 in no particular order:
-contribute to open source
-switching from intellij to vscode
-learn vim
-finish side projects
-live a healthier lifestyle (less meat, quality food)
-more DevOps
-do some hacking challenges
-learn proper linux system administration5 -
You know what would be nice? Coding and exploring for personal fun instead of for work! Even outside of work it's become about work now, because the market is so toxicly exigent!
Can't wait to do my own side projects.10 -
I can't set up testing, a decent structure for my projects, or a basic CI/CD pipeline, because my clients want everything immediately, and my boss just sells my workforce without aknowledging anything of my relationship with the clients. I'm tired af, unsatisfied by what I produce and desperate for side projects to use my skills1
-
Random screen snip from the end of a video from Simon Whistler's "Side projects" channel.
Take that, "human for scale"... Lol.
Still... OMFG that's stupendously big.1 -
I'm giving up on having side projects, most if the stuff I come up with is an unoriginal and uneeded waste of time. I'd rather run the extra mile to contribure to someone else's project.
-
How do you guys prevent burnout when working on a side-project? I'm probably not the only one here, with multiple unfinished projects.3
-
That moment when there are no more new rants, you check algo, latest and read all top and you just sit there lookong at the screen...
(inner self: start working on your side projects !!!!) -
currentRant.GetType() != typeof(Rant)
I know a lot of us developer types have side projects to, well, keep us sane really!
But how many of your side projects actually make you a bit of extra cash on the side?4 -
Same sh*t different day. Let me play with my pet project! I know it does not earn me anything, but hey it will make millions in the future once it's done! I am sure! :D2
-
My new website and All Contributors projects.
I wish I didn't have to spend time house hunting and dealing with my current flat's issues.6 -
2 Months ago, I started a new side project. A project to make something of all the 'left in between' side-projects. Well, I've successfully added it to the same 'left in between' list !!
-
Guys do you ever finish your side-projects??
I have almost 5 incomplete side-projects, i start something with great passion but lose motivation to complete them within hours.
Is it just me or do you guys experience the same?3 -
Getting off the helpdesk.
Something I've yet to accomplish. Self study and side projects will hopefully get me there.1 -
I have a side project that I really want to finish but I'm already having ideas for two other side projects! Help me!1
-
Tomorrow is my internal exams in college and all I can think about working on my side project, kind of amusing
-
Who are these people?
Who have side projects?
Where do they find the time?
Where do they get the motivation from?
Where do they get ideas from?
My manager recently created an android game as a side project... He also suggested me to have side projects if I wanna grow fast :/
I, wake up, pick up some motivation to finish office work (which I actually like) and it's already evening!
Is something wrong with me?10 -
the more you do side projects the more you learn, the more you become better option to human resource managers
-
The challenge of interesting side projects is that it's not just the thing. It's the thing then a whole-ass visualisation library. Or tooling for whatever stupid thing I want to do.
Also then I get bored and start on the next thing.9 -
Creating side projects for the side projects which are supposed to make the coding of side projects who are supposed to speed up coding on main project. Ends up in sideprojectception...3
-
What I've learned from working on side projects is that distraction is caused by poor time management and planning skills. Why is this realization so important? Because it applies to every area of your life. Just think about it.
-
I don't have time for side projects so i share all my ideas on dev.to. 🎉
I hope some of you will get some inspiration and make millions 😂
Feedback is welcome!1 -
Converting all my side projects from C# .Net Framework to C# .Net Core (or Node.js) is a rewarding but long process.7
-
1. Finish/start to work on side projects
2. Learn Erlang or something similar
3. Read atleast one book per month (may or may not be related to programming) -
Can someone please force my project manager to use fucking Maven for dependencies instead of including local jar files for some side projects?
And possibly a better IDE than Netbeans...1 -
The biggest things I’ve probably learned working on side projects are patience and planning. Side projects are a great place to hone your skills of negotiation with other people, but I’ve personally learned a great deal about the process of architecture, simply by doing side projects where I’ve experienced scoping and tooling problems later on. Being patient lends itself to getting better at planning. Working with others on side projects has given me insight into “when to hold em and when to fold em”...and again, this patience education has often helped me be a better planner for a multitude of tasks.

Guys, how do you stay disciplined as a programmer ? I mean how do you manage to work , work and learn for your side projects and also maintain your health ans social life. Is it possible ?1
-
Time to go senior?
I am a web dev for 2.5 years now.
It's my second company.
Had couple of side projects.
And I still feel I don't know enough to be called senior..7 -
Worst experience of 2020 for me was:
👎 that I had 0 time to code my side-projects.
Best experience of 2020:
🙃 can't think of anything good haha -
Have you ever worked in a place that's boring? Projects, coworker, I find them either uninteresting or dumb. I'm worrying in a way because this is removing every possible will to work on a side project from me.
I don't know if I need holidays, a new job, or both 😥1 -
Sometimes I think to keep development as a hobby for my side projects and not as a full time job.
Hate how development/programming has to compromised for businesses.
Hoping some of you will get what I'm trying to say. -
Just deleted the whole directory of my website, it was MESS. It's time to start from scratch again. It is now one of those side projects that I started but never finished.1
-
Life :)
But seriously, there's sooooo many side projects I'd really like to start/finish I can't even list them...1 -
Took a day off to work on side projects, didn't wake up until 50 minutes ago. And now I don't feel motivated anymore. Damn it.3
-
Have a side project going to rebuild some of my old projects in rust, I’ve really been enjoying that experience.
-
* Publish blog update that's been sitting idle locally since months
* Donate 50$ to open-source initiatives (favs are VLC, Linux Mint)
* Contribute meaningfully to relaunch metalsmith static site generator dev
* side projects (TBD) -
After my Holiday i was totaly rested... But a week ago three collegues and myself started a side project... It is soo hard to get up these days!
Best and worst part of being a dev?
The side projects -
looking for a nice side project very badly..😖😖it sucks when you have nothing interesting to work on.3
-
A few times per week, I get inspired and think up some projects that would be really cool to build.
But then by the time I get home, all I want to do is get some rest from a long day at work. So the list of side-projects grows.
How do you guys find time to actually get anything done outside of work?1 -
How often do you come across "similar problems" that you recall solving before so you then remember or search the most likely projects and copy the code?2
-
TMW you realise the only projects that got me somewhere were my side ones. Everything else I've built for other people is either defunct or never came to life in the first place.2
-
Remembering that I have to change the copyright dates to all my side project web apps :-/ Upside working on new side projects. This is how I learn folks.3
-
Best: getting a job in systems programming which was my dream since I wrote my first hello world about ten years ago.
Worst: recognizing that time isn't the restricting factor but energy, I'm often just too tired to work on side projects -
That all too familiar cross road, I have an evening to code, I have some key features of a large (work related) project to carry on with but I also have more side projects than I can possibly complete.
Side project or work project? I seem to find myself here most evenings.1 -
Just any of them really. I'm great at starting side projects, but the "work more" thing is constantly an issue
-
How do you guys come up with side projects? I'm as creative as a... Something that isn't creative. School starts tomorrow and I need a senior project for my software engineering degree but I'm having trouble thinking of anything.3
-
I got a new idea : I'm writing some python scripts to help me in my projects at school, I think it will help me a lot !
But I would like to code some scripts for my side-projects that are made using full JS.
NodeJS + Express + Sequelize for the Web API and ReactJS and HighlightJS for the client.
I would like to know if you could give me some ideas of scripts I could write for these JS side-projects ? -
How do you manage your time after works for your side projects?
These days I'm being a victim of random frequent procrastination after office works.5 -
started watching silicon valley. I thought why arent the unassigned guys working on side or personal projects, then i realized i might do the same thing.3
-
When it comes to working on side projects, how do you usually pace yourself? I always find it hard to do side projects. Do you just spend like an hour every afternoon? I feel I rarely do side work mostly because I'm afraid I'm going to sink like 5 hours in 1 setting. To people who do significant side work, how do you balance that with your day job?2
-
Not working side projects enough. Really puts me behind where I could be but working 9-7 5 days a week I really CBA in my spare time.1
-
Sublime text... works on almost every OS.
On my side projects, probably visual studio (i really like VS debugger).
Sometimes vim, if there is no GUI to work with2 -
Grinding hard passing the exams that make my life a living hell, then finally finish my 10000 side projects. Hopefully make some money of some of them. Also be very cautious about my personal well being and health as it is the most valuable thing.
-
Funny how every single one of my side projects fails due to authentication/authorization/user management. Yeah... Funny and stuff... Thats the right word for my discourage I think... Funny! It's funny!
(open for suggestions)4 -
I have most of my files including all my side projects stores on an SD card that is allways connected to my Mac. Today it stooped working. All gone. One summer of coding wasted. FML.7
-
Finally after one year i managed to set up my home office - so much more comfortable than sitting on the kitchen table when I am working on some side projects, from home or when I am playing some computer games
-
What do you use for your side-projects regarding Anti-DDoS protection?
I have a community with 1-2k daily users hosted in Siteground. Currently, I am not experiencing any DDoS issues (mainly L4) but I used to when I was using another service provider. The trade-off is that the machine and the service I'm paying here is way more expensive.
I don't care about managing the server, but I was looking for a cheaper option to get my project with.
The stack is LAMP and it is an Invision Power Board forum.
What do you recommend? Which service(s) do you use for your projects and how do you prevent DDoS on your side?13 -
Goals for 2019:
Finally get my CS degree.
Find a job.
Complete at least one of my side projects.
Travel with my gf at least once.
Start a master degree in CS if job allows me.
Get a little closer with my family and friends. -
Hmm.. I applied as a QA Tester on company x instead of web developer(back-end). So that I will know how to properly test my side projects. And planning to shift on web development on the next year. I hope this is right. Haha2
-
Think about how big this project could get. Use version control. Build anything as future-oriented as possible. Use all common standards.
I still have some quick'n'dirty side projects that don't let me sleep well sometimes: "Nah, it will be a one time thing, no body will use it anyway" ... -
to just do my shit, without working for anyone. really, I just want to dwell on my side projects forever.
-
What kind of side projects would you like to see from someone interviewing for a JavaScript (front end or backend) related role? If they started with tutorials but did something different is this okay? I also want to start something small, so I can stick with it, but I don't want it to be too small or lack complexity. Thoughts?6

In your free time, do you find freelance projects / side hustled to earn money or learn new work related skills?8
-
What cool piece of code you are working on? Side projects & algorithmic competition counts.
I am working on a webgl based project2 -
Quit my job a month ago, have been playing videogames and doing side projects. Have never felt better. Kinda bummed that I'll have to go job hunting again in a few weeks ;/1

Does anyone know of any websites that have project ideas with requirements/user stories. I generally get side tracked if I sit down and just build something. There are a few full stack projects on freecodecamp with user stories which made me wonder if there are any other similar sites.2 -
Where do you find inspiration for side projects?
Years ago I was full of ideas, and I've had the chance to explore a lot and build experience. I've even built a few successful projects.
But now, between work and university, it seems that my creative thinking is completely shut down.
The few ideas that come to my mind are useless or so trivial that someone else did them already.
What do you do in these cases?3 -
Current side project: A Gradle plugin to automate the build.gradle for Minecraft mods through ForgeGradle, Minecraft Forge, CurseGradle, Maven, and soon, Git changelogs.
Needless to say, its coming along swimmingly! -
Ahh that moment - When you get past month one of a project you're working on and it's clear it's not going anywhere.
-
Coming back to work after 3 days long weekend is absolute tiring, why did work start, I was happy doing my side projects in the weekend kind-ish feeling...1
-
I have a few ideas I'd really like to spend time working on, but I find myself wanting to do other things after working on software all day!
How do people balance working for career, and working for personal projects?1 -

Sometimes I wish I could rent an expert for a day you know.
I do a lot of side projects that are mostly outside of my comfort zone and it’s frustrating having nobody to consistently ask very detailed and specific questions to5 -
How do you write the terms of use for your side projects? Because I barely monetize my side projects (it's just for fun), so I do not always want to pay a lawyer to write my terms of service...4
-
Want to upgrade computer for better programming resources in side projects, need $600
Want to start making side projects for dat sweet sweet ad revenue, need stronger computer
Freelance hobbyist catch-22 :(9 -
For a side project I identified the need for RPC (originally over Websocket but can be extended to WebRTC/DTLS) that supports
- JSON-serializable values
- Promises
- MessagePorts (including shortcut detection for ports that are passed back on a different route)
- async functions
I have ideas for all of these and this is an exciting prospective library, but it's also major scope bloat that will prevent me from ever finishing the project that depends on it.
Would you be interested in such a library if it ever got built?3 -
That amazing feeling of a finished side project, which is also uploaded to Maven central! Woooooo :D1
-
Wanting to work on your side projects but having to do a paper simulating the project management of an assignment you did last year for college.

Have any of you used Godot Engine to make anything? If so, what was your overall experience with it? I'm thinking of learning it fully to make some game side projects3
-
I have a lot of projects to complete for my clients right now (actually paying really well, I can't complain about that), but I am so bored to do them, because I want to keep working on the game I am developing since last month. Side-projects man...1

Does AngularJS still have momentum. I toyed with it for a while on a side project. Since then .Net Core launched and most of my work (both day to day and side projects has been in MVC 5 or .Net Core)
I wanted to go back to tinkering with that one side project but it seems that some of the hype surrounding AngularJS has died off.6 -
Everything from https://devrant.com/rants/4289918 but on the side of projects I happen to work with and dependencies. Applying this scope of change on one human is a bit cheap, don't you think? 🤷♂️
-
One of my side projects was on hold for 8 months because I ran into a minor technical issue maintaining consistency between snippet generation in a few places.4
-
Reluctantly thinking of switching to a PM role so i could focus all my code-fu to my side projects!!
what do u guys think? i know most of us hate PMs, but they do get paid more for what i think is less work (mental focus wise).
😞😞😞2 -
When I take a leave from work for a day, I feel lost.. two days in a row, I start working on random side or home projects.. after the third day, I don't ever want to go back to work..
I wonder how many of you feel the same... -
Finished vocational training! :) Fulltime front-end guy now. #happy no hassle with shitty school or something anymore - lets focus on side projects again :)
-
I'm just hoping my future employer doesn't claim any of my side projects that I'll do at home on my own equipment.1
-
Ask the community who's hiring, visit user groups and other tech gatherings. Being an organizer really helps also, put that on your resume along with any highlighted side projects. When interviewed and asked something you don't know, say "I'm not sure, but I'm really eager to learn"
-
Side projects, also, when I read something interesting I make a small example using it myself to understand it, well some other things too like: attend meetups, pair programming, helping buddies with their issues (you don't have to know everything to give a hand), read blogs/books
-
What’s the point of having side projects if your just asked to do leetcode to show your competency 😞

Within only a few days I finished 2 side projects I had been putting of for a long time and brought a 3rd 9ne from about 20% to 80% completion. Oh boy do I love those productive days! -
Today, i woke up late (like 10:30 am and i must start working at 9:00am) because i stayed too long in the evening working on side projects ... Do you have some advices ? Haha1
-
What advice would you give for someone to get started with freelancing/side projects to earn some extra money?3
-
Work on my own side projects. Even just taking notes about what to do and what to avoid. When I think my own stuff avoids the conceptual flaws which cause low motivation at work, I feel fine again! Bosses never learn, but I sure do!
-
I want to get extra income in my spare time by doing some work on the side. Any suggestions where I can find projects online? Or does anyone have experience on this? Not sure if this is aright way to do. Thanks1

And so begins the job search, sigh -

I've used JavaEE/jQuery/pure JS for so long, I'm crying out for some side projects using different frameworks/technologies.
What's good?5 -
Side projects and I'm kinda bookworm. Now I'm reading about ITIL. I'm project manager wananbe :-D. If you have some nice book about project management let me know in comments. There is never enough informations to learn.
-
Actually finishing side projects!
Maybe make a new demoprod?
Learn more C.
Brush up on TI-BASIC, maybe expand to Commodore BASIC.
Learn more Z80ASM. -
Focusing on node.js and vue.js because I really love the simplicity of them both, and I am working on some side projects I want to release this year which requires me to know the full stack.
-
Goals, eh? Lemme see...
- Graduate so I can get that raise I was promised.
- Finally get started on some side projects and/or have the time to contribute to some projects, OSS or not.
- Learn Haskell and Kotlin properly
- General improvement (learn, learn and learn)10 -
I'm getting laid off for a month.
Any tech related suggestions of what I should do in my excess free time? Got a book (Clean Code) I want to read. Some side projects I might tinker around with. But other than that no concrete ideas.11 -
I'm working on an internal overhaul for Orchid phasing out the last bits of code from May's crunch and making the loading pipeline much more transparent and easier to optimize, but I'm starting to get really tired of high theory and tree walking algorithms.
What are some light hearted projects that can benefit from a scripting language? I don't mind if existing scripting languages would be an objectively better choice, I don't want to build something perfect here, I just wanna have fun with this project again.
