Petition to officially rename the term 'build' to 'kraken', so QA can shout 'Release the Kraken' and I can shout back 'The Kraken has been released!'.19

Reinventing the wheel can be very valuable. Even if you don't create a better wheel, you'll learn a lot about how it works, which can really help you out in the long term.16

"A Google security researcher withdrew from the Black Hat security conference and asked the community to stop using the 'black hat' term."
What the heck? Are we just going to ban the colors white and black in every context? Its clearly not talking about race, its talking about morals... Which people like this "google security researcher" obviously know nothing about...
This is all so stupid... luckily the community disagrees with the stance but then again, afaik, we all also disagreed with removing master/slave and it still happened so make of that what you will...
https://zdnet.com/article/...35 -
Since Microsoft is racist and is trying to remove the "master" term on GitHub to "fix the World" I hope they won't forget about the "master" volume in the audio settings of Windows.12
-
I hate it when developers use the term "Full Stack" developer so liberally.
I interviewed someone so proud and only knew Wordpress and basic CSS.17 -
Have you guys heard of the term "smart " as in "smart city" or "smart phone"
It actually is:
Surveillance
Marketed
As
Revolutionary
Technology12 -
"yes, sir, we block ftp and ssh connections from outside the benelux (shortcut for: belgium/netherlands/luxembourg, didn't say this part but it's a very widely known term here)"
"if you allow connections from INSIDE the benelux, why can't I connect from Germany, eh?!?!"

Today I welcome a new bot into our little world.
Have you ever had the need to write "did you google it" before?
@lmgtfy will turn your comment into a lmgtfy search.
Just tag @lmgtfy and any text afterwards will be added to a search term. (Excluding emojis - because reasons)75 -
Just switched to 99% DuckDuckGo a couple of days ago.
Is there a term for searching with DDG?
- "DDGing" maybe??
One reason for using it: Dark theme! 🖤36 -
So today I bought the firsts lego boxes for my eldest son and gave him his first long-term addiction...
Feels SO FUCKING GREAT!!!!!!4 -
I'm specialized in creating technical debt.
Basically, I rant my way in any dev specialty.
Since I never have a solid understanding of what I'm fucking with, ranting is more natural.
Ability to create technical debt is one of the most important skill, often underestimated:
- it will lead to heavy refactoring or even rewrite = more job for dev
- it will save a lot of short term effort, and luckily will produce the mid-term lock-in of the developers (more money for dev)
- it will increase billable hours to the customer. Higher the technical debt, more complex the explanation, and easier to confuse the customer.
- the best thing is that you'll never pay the debt. You'll eventually leave - willing or not - the job and you'll find some green field to exploit and create more debt.17 -
++-ing a random rant from the feed is like a one night stand whereas subscribing to a user's rant is like a long term relationship!56

This years~
It’s a class that introduce an introduction to programming.
First weeks of the class.
T: “For those who already know this basic stuff , You can take a final test. If you pass, you get an ‘A’ and dont have to attend to this class for the rest of this term.”
Me: “Fuck yeah~ Let’s do this”

So we have this long term contractor that EVERY FUCKING TIME says MySQL meaning SQL Server... Like wtf dude? Shut the fuck up...5

I broke off a long term relationship recently and today I deleted the text conversation with my ex. With 13000 messages being deleted at once I managed to crash my texting app for a whole 10 minutes.5

I Quit,
Finally I quit.
This feels good after the countless red flags I raised to management and wishful thinking that this time things will be different. For the past year!
This time I lost the optimistic approach and got myself a couple of interviews, thinking, I'm in this for the long haul, could be 6 months could be a year, evantually I will succeed. and what do you know? It works, I can still pass those.
Then I set down with myself and thought, should I come to managment before signing the contract? Giving another chance for a real change? The answer was a resounding Hell No!
So, yea, if you are in a tough position. Don't give up, think long term, and who knows that "long term" might just be a month.3 -
One of the bigger and more important IT projects this fall. Technical solution proposal needs to be ready by Thursday morning but is far from complete. Solution? The responsible person for this went on a two day mindfulness training. Apparently totally oblivious to the term "sense of urgency". Must be a citizen of procrastiNATION.3
-
I was hired as a programmer, but I feel like the correct term is reprogrammer, because no one can code for shit at my job...1
-
Can we please make physicist use another name for black holes? I think that term is very racist and schould be replaced by a more politically correct one.10

Some of my coworkers call connecting with SSH "git bashing", because they use git bash for making ssh connections. 😋
They never understand me when I use the term "SSH". 😔3 -
Wow. I think I've got devrant fever.
I just browsed devrant. Closed devrant. Immediately saw devrant on my homescreen and thought, I need to check devrant. Then immediately after that I remember I just browsed devrant. *Sigh*.6 -
What if the long term goal of @trogus and @dfox is to create a developer army, hell bent on the destruction of project managers and clients everywhere (except the cool ones).
I mean I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just wanted to... You know.... Raise some attention.3 -
I think I have accidentally invented the term 'noteporn' the moment a colleague saw my lesson notes taken in LaTeX and said: "Wow, your notes are so beautiful one could fap on those!"4
-
'Be long-term lazy.'
As in:
Work hard.
DRY.
If it takes more than 20 minutes, then automate it.
Prevent repeated work by testing just enough.1 -
Everything is a fucking priority.
According to the management, everything should be done yesterday already.
Gave me a single designer and developer while asking asking me to deliver long term and short term initiatives at the same time.
Morons.8 -
My roommate's CS Prof literally makes them print their code on PAPER (max 80 chars to a line) and submit it to his physical dropbox across campus. This includes end of term projects where a single submission might have literally 20 pages of code.
I don't know what to say.13 -
My boss...
With `Back-End` he understands `the Dashboard`. The system that is used only from company's employees.
`Front-End`, the software that is used by our customers.
I have explained him many times that he was wrong, but he seems to use this term. And now I have to use these terms like him.9 -
I was looking through old entries in my keepass, and I happened across this bit from when I worked in places that still had unix servers. I was so angry at the impossible input issues they had that I put this into my 'handy commands' section.2
-
It always gives me a smile when my boss (ceo, no technician) calls me and says "let's do some software architecture together!". He has no idea what this means, but he likes the term. Sometimes, this call just means "let's have a beer together"2

When you try to clear term in messenger.
Fuck my life. I shouldn't be allowed to programming before midday.6 -
Thank you for fucking me
Thank you for sucking me
Thank you for lying to me
Thank you for showing your true self
Thank you for teaching me what type of people to avoid
Thank you for sharpening my focus
Thank you for making me suffer
Thank you for improving my grind
Thank you for being a bitch
Thank you for being a whore
For now i have taken heavy damage and a heavy loss of time
For i shall take it as a reminder
A lesson to never forget
Short term gain
Damages
Long term fulfillment
And vice versa
Yin yang
The perfect balance
You will not be missed
I am done dealing with this fuckin bullshit
Goodbye13 -
What's the most bullshit marketing term you've heard being used? Something that sounds flashy for a non tech client, but makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
I just heard "harnessing hyperconnectivity". The fucks that?3 -

I'm going to talk to my supervisor about redoing their code base.
It will take time, it will suck a bit but I think the long term investment in doing this right will be worth it.
Wish me luck in convincing him 😂🤞7 -
Historically, in operating rooms, surgeons would discard biomedical waste in buckets. When a patient died on the operating table, the lead surgeon would get so upset that he would "kick the bucket", which is now a term for when someone dies.
That's a fake fact, just like "Java runs on 4 billion devices"2 -
Do ya ever hate how often people use the term "AI" so loosely. It's like saying your thermostat or your "smart oven" (or "smart"-everything) is "AI-infused" because it can regulate the temperature. Unless the machine actually learns something for next time around, a bunch of "if" statements isn't truly AI in my book.5
-
Amazing how people misuse the term technical debt.
A bug is a flaw in your design/development.
Tech debt is a conscious decision/tradeoff, which is often tracked and removed as the product matures.
The difference is subtle. Avoid this mix up at least in written communication.9 -
Tempted to root my phone purely to remove the long term Volume exposure warning (and the subsequent auto-lowering of it).
Fuck you, you don't know me. Maybe I want tinnitus.6 -
wild people somewhere with real high end laptop (it's apple, so we can tell by looking at it?) :"am developing a website..."
.... "develop" a website... using wordpress?
i think these days people have confuse the term develop and design.....5 -
You know you've been staring at code for too long when you see a function called getInitial(), but it looks more like a NSFW term.4

I’m sure many of you are well aware of this, but I just ran across this today and found it amusing. Apparently, Chrome uses the term “zygote” to identify child processes. 😁2

We live in a world where WEAKNESS has become a virtue.
- I'm oppressed!
- My mental health!
- I need a helper!
- I'm sensitive!
- You're fatphobic!
- <INSERT SJW's IDENTITY term>
In today's world, you score more social points for describing yourself as weak & blaming 'oppressors' for your miserable life12 -
TIL the term "Kangaroo Code" was also a popular sort-of synonym for "Spaghetti Code".
It more referred to languages that heavily used "goto"s (because it would be "code with a lot of jumps")10 -
For everyone happy to see Facebook getting negative PR, just remember, unless people decide that they are willing to pay a monthly subscription for social media, nothing is going to change long term.6
-
Well, I am not against LGBTQ community or anything specific but a Slack community I am part of has this things configured.
I mean c'mon, at this point, 'guys' is quite a gender neutral term. Also, I don't think OP tried to disrespect anyone by using 'guys'.
Also, the said Slack community is group of start-up hipsters and super active Twitter users.60 -
Best "short-term" solution that is still in production.
By best, I mean the one that you regret seeing but too afraid to touch1 -
"org.apache.spark.mllib.linalg.densevector"
In firefox entering this term in the searchbar tries to open a website.
In Chrome, it searches the term.11 -
How did targeted ads become so...accurate?
I did a search for a new service on Google last night.
Today, an ad appears on my Facebook feed highlighting my search term on Google the night before.10 -
Am I the only one who feels offended by the stupidity of who feels offended by the term "master" in GitHub?11

mongo in slang means idiot, which comes from the term mongol or mongoloid, which is a deprecated word that used to be used for sufferers of down syndrome. So MongoDB means "Down Syndrom Data Base"
Also mongo means huge, so it may have been named after that.9 -
There is a possibility that I might maybe hopefully get a laptop if I help my dad with one of his own long-term projects.
If this actually happens, I don't have to run Linux of a SD card anymore :D2 -
Quote from the esafety au website
"Social engineering is not hacking. Hacking involves the use of computer technoliogies to gain unauthorised access to systems. Students sometimes use the term 'hacking' when in fact they have shared their password"4 -
I think the reason I hate the terms "programming" and "program" (the verb) is because it's so commonly misused. Also I found people to less think of me as an hacker when saying that I am a coder rather than "I am a programmer".5
-
I’ve only just been able to catch up with the UK news and the government missed ~16,000 cases of COVID-19 over a 7 day period due to a “technical glitch”.
The “technical glitch” was the government using an excel spreadsheet that reached the data limit.
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea long term, that’s why databases exist!!!!9 -
Started my CS degree, first term in. My uncle asks asks me to but "watchers" on my cousins' computers so that he can make sure they are not doing anything "bad'".... Then he wants me to put one on my aunt's Facebook.... Creepiest weekend ever.3

Fuck exams!
Over thousand slides, 100 marks. Postgraduate term exam. So screwed, can't remember title of unit, rather don't want to. -

Is it just me, or is the term full stack developer a bit carelessly thrown about in job listings and such?
In the past, as far as I can tell, you could refer to yourself as a full stack dev if you had experience with both front end and back end technologies.
If you for example knew HTML/CSS, JS, PHP and MySQL, you'd be a full stack dev.
Now however, I feel you need to know so much more to justify calling yourself an actual full stack dev, and yet most job listings ask for a full stack dev.
What do you guys think?
Should the term full stack developer still be used, and what do you need to know to justify calling yourself a full stack dev without feeling like a liar?8 -
It's really sad how companies in UAE misusses the internship term, and make the poor interns do full time job with minimum or no salary.4
-
What about "Man page"? You sound like a sex-throlling maniac and I demand that you blacklist the term also from the dictions on your doc 🤪 (Oh fuck, did I just used the word 'blacklist'?) *whispers* Sorry Jim, I actually meant 'darklist' the word 'Man page'.9
-
That was the first time an image didn't contain the searched for term, so I never read the text "press skip [...]" and really tired me, tried to find a bridge for too long2
-
Both Conservancy and the Git project are aware that the initial branch name, ‘master’, is offensive to some people and we empathize with those hurt by the use of that term.
Offensive my butt. It's not like any developer alive today had experienced the life of a slave. It's all in the past. Should I get offended by imperial Japanese flag?15 -
I got an email about the job opening of a "HTML Developer" in a leading telecom company in our country.
A HTML Developer? Really ? Are you expecting a html only website in this day an age? How can you be a "leading company" when you did not even know the correct term for a front end web development job post3 -
Being away from my PC for a long time makes me think of stupid but concerning questions that others seems to care less about.
"Is the term 'spicy' really a flavor? or a sensation?" Some would argue that it's a form of allergic reaction tolerance.6 -
I hate the term "full stack" as it sounds like uneducated recruiter speak, but then can't think of anything better.9
-
Spending hours trying to solve a problem just to find that the answer was not just simple, but well known. You just didn't know the technical term to search for.1

the happy moment when you get turned down by agencies over the phone, when they "don't think you are what they are looking for" although you have 4 years commercial experience and are 23 years old, by an agent that fancies the term API and WordPress... fml3

I have adhd and anxiety which means I cant smoke, drink coffee or drink alcohol because that fucks up my sleep and short term and long term memory badly for few days in a row. ADD symptoms become unmanageable. Fuck my life. I guess I will have to cut all stimulants if I want to be abe to function as a decent dev. I will have to cut most of my social circle because they wont understand me not going out for drinks... Fuck my life....14

In a lecture and all the guy is doing is reading out of a book that was handed out at the start of term.
The saying those who can no do teach and those who can not teach teach maths comes to mind.
What am I paying for...2 -
Please, can someone explain the term "enterprise" to me. I work in a corporation, I hear it twice a week, I develop it, and still have no idea what it means.13
-
You may always feel behind. You aren’t alone. Find something you enjoy within coding. Don’t be a hero and pick all the tickets. Pick what you can achieve. Pick a long-term ticket that you can call yours and own it and learn from it.
BE KIND YO YOURSELF.2 -
"Education" system is based on memorization. If you're able to memorize stuff short term, you'll pass the exam and be considered as "educated" academic citizen, not as "memory efficient" citizen.
Let that sink in11 -
When your professor invented the subject and you don't understand his lecture so you go online and search for the term and all you found is his slides from other universities when he was a professor over there.4

I think I can learn English here.
HAHAHA
I can also learn professional knowledge.

I'm starting to think that "Machine Learning" is the most unfortunate term that the industry has ever seen.
How people approach a problem here where I work: "I have a problem, I don't know how to solve it, I don't have any data. Let's implement a Machine Learning algorithm that will solve the problem for me."4 -
Is there a relation with bad long term memory and programmers?
Most really good programmers I know don't have great memeory10 -
Penetration test 😏. Is there any other kinky term you know in computer sciences? Spill the beans.14

I really feel like coding right now, but I don't have time. Problem is: when I do have time and I have to code I probably don't want to anymore.

In russian, wagtails are called “трясогузка”, literally “a twerking bird”. “Трясо” is “shaking”, “гузка” is an obsolete term for “booty”, not tail. Hence twerking bird.12

I have never really understood the true meaning or usage of the term "passive aggressive".
Is this email passive aggressive? Or just a bit sad?3 -
I'm gonna register myself as a self-entrepreneur (idk if it's the good term in English) today. I have some pressure, I'm going to suffocate under tons of papers16

Used a general technical word as a name for a group project.
And that ignorant bitch googled and copy pasted the definition of that term to describe the project in documentation.2 -
Ah the managers have come up with a new term we need to implement: "SEO Doubleposting"
I must bow down to their technical genius and prowess, I've never heard it before, it must be high tech term beyond my 10+ years of being a developer.4 -
I've been working on my term paper and writing an SDL-OpenGL program for it. I wanted to implement GLSL shaders. Took me only 6 hours and three cocktails.
And after the ordeal I ended up with this unholy flickering mess which just hurts to look at.
It's frustrating, doing all this shit for something that doesn't even work properly.
Fuck this2 -
Student temp is 2/3 done his term, and I'm pretty sure he hasn't learned anything.
When I was a student temp, I built a video chat platform. -
when you are looking for php devs to join you on your startup and they don't understand the meaning of being a founder and expect a salary from the start 😭 you join early to get the long term benefits. a startup job isn't an immediate payday. ugh.3

After 3.5 terms, I still see people running Linux in a vm && writing C code in nano.
Should I be concerned if that really freaks me out?
Usually I'd say use whatever floats your boat but I just don't get why they don't dual boot, they'll need Linux in pretty much every term...16 -
In the beginning, computers used relays on a macro scale instead of micro electronics
In the 40's admiral grace hopper found a moth in one of the relays and the term "debugging" was born1 -
Before I learned software development, API sounded like a kind of beer.
Today I used the term so often that I have in fact recently tried to order an API at a bar.1 -

Not writing tests for your code is like leaving it unguided in the hands of future Devs who gonna just change something and break the core logic and there won't be any regression test to run and check the integrity.

How do you guys keep motivation in a long term project? Cause I could be completely motivated in the first like half but then just lose interest even though I love the project itself.8
-
I think there should be a term for linux software that is advertised as self-containment or statically linked, when it very much isn't.
I suggest "statistically linked", because statistically, it appears to be statically linked on about 50% of all systems it will be run on.5 -
DAMNIT. I love Netflix, I do, but if you want to really stop the illegal downloading in the long term then don't remove series or movies I'm watching.
I get it, it's these big companies pulling their content but it's just so backwards.
Happy new year!5 -
Management forbade the use of XML in favor of the faster, formatted strings that looked like opening alligator jaws facing left and right. Yes, he used the term ‘alligator jaws’.

I started using dvorak ~2 months ago and I’m getting better and better, but I was still using qwerty for french. But today, I discovered bépo... bye bye short term productivity2

Standup feels like a waste of time most days. I’ll tell you when I make progress or if I hit a roadblock, you don’t have to ask about it daily. Especially on longer term projects.4

I think I might need to own my own business and foot the bills. That way I can learn why it's a good idea to only focus on the short term costs and ignore the long term ones

When writing my term paper.
Did some caffeine and teeine fueled rage C++ coding.
Codes over the day and night.

P.S : I know how OCDs get. My heart goes out to these people. This is just some frivolous fun17 -
Apple just changed their file system to apfs across the board, but no recent documentation on the release. It automaticalky changes from hfs+ when you install the macos 10.12.4 update. In early docs it says that time machine is not supported, but surely they cant kill everyones short term backups?9

For years I've been saying software is "depreciated" , today I just noticed that the term is "deprecated".
Not sure either term really means what we think it does when talking about old software though.

Had Arduino for months, couldn't get MPU6050 working, because of a lack of time and other stuff. (Need it for long term college project, data logging blah blah)
Gave it to project teammate to figure it out, who hates even touching hardware, BTW.
He figures it out in an hour (adjusting baud rate for supply voltage)
I feel like a complete idiot.

It seems google index this link: https://devrant.com/search/...

People really have short term memories. It seems everyone has suddenly forgotten the nonexistent lack of privacy at Zuck’s platforms.
To be fair, I think competition is good for consumers and Musk has been doing a very terrible job of managing Twitter.
But not having most platforms of social communication controlled by one company would be better.5 -

I'm sitting 11h on the bus again.
You guys/girls/etc opinion on long term relationships?3 -
It takes courage to use npm as a product. The inability of its leader, Isaac Schlueter, to communicate the reasoning behind decisions pose a risk as a choice for long term toolchain.
My company will move to yarn for now and jump ship to Deno as soon as it reaches all of my check marks.5 -

Until I started a new IT position a few months ago, I had never heard anyone refer to the backslash as "whack." Luckily I was able to pick up what my coworker was saying through the context of the conversation so I didn't look like an idiot, but it made me wonder what the origins of the "whack" term are. Google confirmed to me that this isn't just something he made up and that it is a semi-commonly used term, but I didn't see anything on its origin.9

In a review meeting with a client, someone asks the PM to Google something while she's presenting. Her steps:
1. Go to the company intranet home page

4. Type "Google" in the Yahoo search
5. Search for the term.

How do you define a junior/senior dev?
I've been a professional developer for about 5/6 years now.
Would taking a "junior" role be a step down? Or does the term not really matter?3 -

Short term: Become familiar and independent enough to choose my own machine and software to work with. Right now it's "Here's your MBP, we've already installed the stuff that the rest of us use". If I try and switch to something else and I run into a problem, I'm on my own.
Mid term: Like a lot of you it seems, I'd love to have my own setup. Either have my own company or partner with some friends/family. Whatever lets me do the work I want, build the things I want, and gives me a bit more freedom outside of work. Perhaps a little side-hustle to help with finances.
Long term: I'd love to return to my studies. I don't think I'll ever stop coding, it scratches an itch, a need to make something out of nothing, but I'd love to pursue a career in physics.5 -
as someone who never worked in an office, or in a team, new term for me:
cowboying
I can guess what it means, but..
please, share... and elaborate
is this a new term?
I don't get to hear much office gossip... :)3 -
I've switched from pycharm to sublime to vsocde in a month, now vim is catching my eye, my mentor will kill me if i started using vim now but it's freaking interesting, will be learning a little bit of vim, will stick to vscode for long term i guess.12

My boss telling me not to worry and be more confident, after pointing out that not updating bad ad hoc code is not a long term solution, just inspired the confidence in me to tell him to go fuck himself if shit brakes during the weekend and evenings.1

Nearing the end of the year, and all I'm thinking is that I'm just making bad decisions left and right. And these are like long term decisions, that don't show results until much later.
It's making me really depressed and it's not good.
There are a bunch of should haves all littered throughout the past 3 months and it's really fucking with me.2 -
That's why I'm always tired:
I go to learn some framework, I bump into a term that ends up being a whole other programming language that uses a tool that needs 2 months to learn... and there's just so much stuff to learn!!! -
Does anyone know why we say "hero" for big headers in webdesign ? Where does this term come from ?3
-
i was trying to explain my vision of a client's site to him without using any technical terms, so the most used term was "thingy", "there gonna be a lil thingy here, a thing for login and stuff there, yea all that, got it, the theme gon be blue [...]".
-
Is there a term for people who use @channel or @here on Slack when they shouldn't?
Sorry if you used that name on DevRant and you got tagged.6 -
Worst documentation experience: reading an 500+ page ISA document where the author (a so-called computer architect) kept confusing the term 'op-code,' and 'instruction.' When I asked for a consistent definition he flamed the shit out of me. My boss sided with him.
-
Why did we stopped using a term programmer, which is exclusive to our position and opted for developer instead?2
-
Installed Ubunut 20 on my laptop (Thinkpad). It cannot open the App Store (with A letter on it). Imagine building a system, marking it as stable (long-term-support) and shipping it in such state that it is unable to launch the default (pre-installed!) app-store. This is Linux for you.
Updated the system; still cannot start the freaking appstore.7 -
Producing an incredible product you can be proud of; to have a client come in and ruin everything in blind feedback because 'they know best'
This needs a slang term.4 -
My professor insults me, cuts my term grades and delays my submissions because I didn't do her PhD project that she had asked for.

I have 3 goals this year.
Move out
Maintain at least 1 new long term friendship
Be more responsible
I have way more smaller things I want to do but these are the end goals. Each entail their own struggles but I know I can do it.
Keep me responsible fam -

Im browsing to webdeveloper vacancies all day today. Appearently every company thinks they are working with or on state-of-the-art technology. This term is raped and abused for sure!2
-
Of course I'd like to develop something I actually care about and make money out of it, but since I'm still in uni my short term vision is finding a job as a developer. Gotta bring that bread on the table, and maybe start having a life (not necessarily a social one).

Landed somehow on POTUS comparing total presidential spending. Of course you've spent less, your term is barely a quarter of the way through, you goon.

Interface is the most misleading term in .Net. It's not an "interface" when an object requires a set of objects defined by another object! It's a template if anything! I'd even accepted CookieCutter or Mold.
-
I saw this from netflix's screensaver-esq display.
That's a great title!... thinking of orchestrating one's internal processes with the subtext of potential inner demons...
but ofc it has nothing to do with the tech term daemon...
I'm pretty sure that I need a break but I have more I need to do.2 -

Ctrl+F thinkpad
Search term not found

Definitely Android 8.0 is neat.
And it's faster.
I think Android has developed a lot.
Isn't that right? -
I'm supposed to write a term paper about a scrappy python/sqlite3 project I put together in a day. And even though mine is the most advanced of all the student's programs (it's cocky but it's true), I feel so ashamed... It is so scrappy and useless... Now I'm supposed to pull something out of my ass, what I did or how I did it sounding all pretentious and proud. After I get my grade I'm wiping it off my disk for sure!1
-
tmux, Neovim, and Alacritty (term emu) with VT323 font... on Windows via WSL. When you can't decide between OS's, just choose both!14
-
The term "CPU" is stupid nowadays, what even is "central", when there are entire server farms primarily employing GPUs.
I propose "GPP" - General Purpose Processor - as a much more descriptive name instead.3 -
When you're the star player of your team in your final term, but then you graduate and enter the real world and find out how much more you have left to learn...

Is the grouprant broken for anyone else? Question and tag never seem to match for me, for example, this week it says "Tips for staying productive" / "Add tag 'wk247' to your rant", but it is linked to https://devrant.com/search/..., which is obviously a different topic.1

This guy was giving an introductory course on Big Data one year, was boring as f, came in class with unreadable 80 slides presentations, asked us to re-code one of the assignment he gave us for the term exam. I went to two of his classes and still rocked the assignments, flunked the exam tho.

So in the next term we're going to learn web dev(bootstrap and some javascript, no backend :( for now), the previous term was about c#. We'll have to build a website as a team (4-5 people) and everyone has a specific task and have to do the research on their own,but at the same time we can help each other out. OMG if the whole school was just like this I would be happy to come here every day lol! I also hope to improve on my social anxiety, but this could easily backfire depending on my future teammates, coz you know, in every highschool there have to be some badass kid whose intelligent equals with two rats...
So yeah, right now I feel 50-50% about this whole thing.1 -
Answering non techie people what my job is. I could say I'm a software engineer, and they would understand because it has the word "engineer". But i prefer to introduce myself as a developer but they give me a confused look.
I think engineer is an overused term and i hate that term, for me, connected to typical asian patents who forces their kids to be an engineer or doctor. -
In Firefox, refreshing and redirecting pages steal the URL bar.
When a page refreshes itself or redirects elsewhere while I am entering something into the URL bar, what I entered gets replaced with the URL of the target page that was redirected to, or the URL of the current page if it refreshes itself.
This makes the user vulnerable to spam pages that refresh themselves or keep redirecting to hijack the URL bar.
If this happens the fraction of a second before I press "Enter", Firefox web searches for the end of my search term with the target URL appended to it, for example if I entered "example search term", it would search for "ermhttps://www.example.org".
You'd think this would have been fixed by now, after over a decade, but no.8 -
now i know this is devrant and not su-rant or sysadminrant or anything alike,
but it cringes me everytime i see rants like "linux this" or "linux that".
now those who does it, do understand that the term "linux" refer to the kernel and not the os in it's entirety, right?6 -

I saw someone once mention a desire to change the term "master" in Git vocabulary and syntax to something more inclusive. I couldn't wrap my head around what massive upheaval that could cause with peoples' scripting, workflows, etc. across the world. Is that totally unrealistic, or can it be done?21
