We were doing some temp work, and a girl we were working with had gone out to talk to her boyfriend on the phone.
1. Flip screen orientation 180 degress
2. Take screenshot
3. Set that as wallpaper and flip back
4. Hide icons, hide taskbar, move taskbar to far right edge

Sit back, relax and watch the show.

Ranted about that porn work prank.
Forgot a joke the senior linux engineer pulled with me.
I came back from the toilet and sat down. Logged in. Cursor was on the left screen. Looked away and then back. Cursor was on the right screen.
*wait what? hmm must be my memory.*
*looks away and turns back*
*wait did that cursor just move.....?*
*damn what's up with me...?!?*
*turns around and looks back VERY quickly*
*cursor moves all over the screen*
*looks at front usb inputs*
*notices a wireless receiver*
*laughing from the corner where the senior linux engineer is sitting*

My girlfriend's dad asked me to fix his printer.
I open it up, pulled the cartridge, blowed some air and put it back again.
It worked.

When you fuck something up with a customer and you very nervously apologize and they come back with 'apology accepted, we both learned something out of this!'
Thank you dear sir 😅👌2 -
Enough of this!!! I need a break.

That moment when your boss is introducing the new guy and you are silently making a list of all the git repos you need to back up before he makes it to his desk.

Few of us went to the break. After 20 minutes or so, this one guy just stands up, says he’ll be right back, and leaves. We figured he went to the toilet or something. He never came back2

To late to turn back now.
This fucker is getting pushed.22 -
So this guy called me. I hung up at the second 'ring'. He called again and I hung up immediately. I mean without picking up.
Please, get the hint, I'm fucking busy. Leave a message, I'll call you back if needed.
But don't try and contact me a THIRD TIME in a time frame of 1 minute. Not through WhatsApp. That's borderline harassment GO FUCK YOURSELF.11 -

when u spend 2 hours desperately trying to fix a bug. Give up, off the computer and get ready for bed. the moment you get comfortable and ready to sleep. You solve the problem mentally in ur head. Get back up, on the computer and continue coding.

"Schrödingers CPU": When your processor randomly and for no apparent reason spins up to 100% and brings the whole system to a halt. Bringing up task manager takes forever,
and when it finally appears so you could see what process is the culprit, it quickly drops back to normal again leaving you with no clue on what happened.7 -

I got a call at 12:30 one night a few months back. Apparently some back-end scripts I edited to fix an automated test setup crashed around 75 test pc's and halted somewhere around 2000 tests. I quickly jumped on, fixed the issue, and got everything back online.
I was up all night certain I would get fired. First thing in the morning the client says welcome to the club some, of the best have done the same thing.2 -
Fuck yeah!! The power supply that I've been working on since last week is all cleaned up and back in action 😁😁😁14

A fitness guy was walking and dropped his credit card.
I grabbed it and ran up to him to give it back.
He jumped like a scared rabbit and said rudely, "you scared the shit out of me", took the card back and walked off without even a thank you.

Okay, no one says that. I made it up. I idioted today. I accidentally rm -rfed my workspace directory and lost all my code.
Now I'm re-syncing stuff back into place from my remote back up.

"Rant/Story"
Dayum.
Prestory and afterstory:
Today I have slept for around <2 hours and had to drive to my college.
The real shit happens right now.
Story:
During these almost 2 hours, I have dreamed about going back in time, but being limited on the same day's hours.
In other words... It was e.g. 16 o'clock and the time travelled back into the past. Like into a "0830 ish" morning. The day would then come to an end and start with the next day. For example from Monday to Tuesday.
I was able to look into the future whenever I wanted to.
Even though I was driving my car in the first gear, it would drive into the reverse direction.
Time suddently switches direction and everything is going as it should be. Greeting people in the streets as I would do normally.
And all of the sudden time decides to switch its direction again and I have to do things in reverse.
At some point I found something like a hidden room which had a door. I opened it and went into the "room" (it was a special place. It had no walls at all). It had a door at the other side of the room. I went through it and saw another one in the last room. It felt like, if I decide to go through that door, I would instantly die. I therefore moved all the doors back into the dream world.
Such a confusion gave me a fucking headache lol.
After waking up from such a fucking complicated dream, time irl felt fucking weird lmao.
My alarm began to do its job. It tried to wake me up at 6:30 am, at 6:45 am and at 6:50 am.
But all the time along it felt like it began to wake me up at 6:50 am down to 6:30 am.6 -
If you ever get a problem with your Linux,
DO NOT EVER try out an answer on any random forum without reading all the comments/replies.
The problem spreads like a freaking wildfire and you will end up reinstalling Linux and losing data what wasn't backed up. (If by God's grace, you do a regular back up)2 -
First day of vacation after 5 months of overtime... aaaaand I'm stuck in bed with a back issue.

Ughhh!
I can get understand the swipey swipe for back etc. But the "swipe up + hold " for recent apps just makes me cringe !!!!!
Ok, Some how you manage to open the recent apps by precisely fingering your phone.
You gotta go back to home screen from recents ??
Open a recent app then swipe up for home.
Two fucking gestures to go back to home screen !
Or click the close all apps button for home screen.
This is non sense.
Pls enlighten me if I am missing something.

So last week I ranted about the hours I was working, great start this week I'm up at 03:00 to go up north, not going to get back till 20:00 ish. Tomorrow I have to be in Wales for 09:00 so going to have to be up at 04:00 for a 5 hour travel time. Check my emails and my boss says after I get back from Wales tomorrow can we have a design and specification meeting about a "super urgent" product that we have to develop. Oh and Thursday I have to prep everything for going live with a new product Friday.8

In my ongoing quest to un-Google my life, I turned off the Whatsapp chat back up, which uses Google Drive. There's a message in that setting which says, "Media and messages you back up are not protected by Whatsapp end-to-end encryption while in Google drive".
Damn.
All my Whatsapp chats for years have been on Google servers in plaintext.
I assumed it uploaded one massive encrypted archive.13 -

My pm requested me to estimate few tasks on a new project(single page app), the problem was that he was creator of these tasks, so we ended up with
- Create back button
- Create next button
- Create table with contents
... etc
As I prefer to take things literally I estimated each task as they literally should (5 min for adding buttons etc). So all tasks together were estimated for about 5h, while whole project was estimated for 100MD. After few talks and discussions we ended up with:
- Create back button
- Create back button logic
- Create next button
- Create next button logic
etc1 -

I was cleaning up dangling images in docker, and I accidentally removed the production database container as well.
Its not a big issue, I can just up the container back and everything should be fine. But after I up the container and connected to the database, I found out there's no data inside. I thought I fucked up, and sent msg in slack channel that I nuked the db.
Later my friend asked me which compose file I am using and that's when I realized I used the wrong config to up the db. Used the correct config to up the database again and everything goes back to normal.
It's friday evening and if I really dropped the db it would be fucking bad weekend....3 -

2.Start imagining and planning in my head
3.Start working on my idea

A client brought us a project once related to drones. Our team came up with a great solution for the problem and pitched it back to the client. After going back and forth and beating us up on the price, they ultimately got cold feet and stopped responding to us.
Flash forward several months and wouldn't you know it, NASA and Lockhead Martin have the same idea and file the patent. Could have been sitting pretty if the client just went through and filed our design first which would have barely cost anything.2 -

So I didn't boot up my Windows 10 from more that a month now (dual boot).
I wonder how many eternities it will take to update when I shut it down to switch back to Linux. :/
#scary1 -
When you "think" got rid of some errors and end up making 15 more errors. You be like "I WANT MY OLD ERRORS BACK RN!"3
-
Got to love when the on-call takes their sweet-fucking time with the back-up. All this because the lazy douche did not what to verify the back-up was complete.
-
Just fixed my broken htc one m9 (boot loop after legitimate update) by powering it up month after putting in back to box for future repair. Who to blame? NSA? Android 7? SD Card?

Firefox Quantum broke mouse gestures of any kind in Linux by forcing the context menu to come up on right mouse down, instead of up.
Lots of people love Quantum, but without a viable mouse gestures extension, it's unusable for me. I downgraded back to 56 until this issue is resolved.3 -
I saved my uni work onto a floppy disk (2001) and walked a mile into university library to print it. When I got there and put it into the computer it had corrupted and the disk was unreadable! Luckily I had a back up on my computer so had to walk the mile back, saved again onto two different floppy disks this time and walked the mile back. This time I managed to print it and deliver the work 5 minutes before the deadline.

It just took me 5 freakin hours to get the god damn upgrade done ... just to see that I've to do it again because I didn't use the latest back up ........... fml

Lets make sure that we are always using the latest software! Keep things up to date#

When you have an important presentation and you are so ready for it, and then you find out you forgot to pack your charger and that you didn't back up the presentation somewhere online and nobody in your entire tech savvy college has a charger compatible with your fancy ass gaming laptop and now you have to commute all the way back and come back in time to do the presentation.3

When you come back from work after filling up jira, talking with colleagues during too long stand ups and writing documentation it's time to finally sit down and write some pure code.

For a long time I could not understand how do people put up with watching ads in Android apps. Then it dawned upon me: they grew up like this and they never had a proper classic old-school desktop experience. Back in the day it was unimaginable to have intrusive ads. I will never put up with intrusive ads. I despise it
Now even developer tools have ads, like Docker or NPM8 -
I hear Devs of all ages blaming everything on imposter syndrome. Everyone is scared and will get back stabbed by our rivals now and then. We cant build cool things if we don't suck it up and go balls out.2

when viewing a profile and scrolled down enough to hide the avatar and the user description, it does not show up back again when scrolled up... is it a bug or a feature? 😂 @dfox4

Fuck! WiFi issues are nerve-wracking!
We're nearly in 2022 and I have to still deal with outages. I want my dial-up modem back. 😐11 -
Three back-to-back meetings today: Stand-Up, Planning, and Retro ... AKA two full hours of hearing everybody’s problems and hearing all viable solutions dismissed because we have no time to fix what’s broken.3

I officially gave up on this semester of college! ✨🍻🎉
I'm coming back next year, but until then, I'm glad to disappoint my family3 -

Shit like this makes me wanna call Windows the McDonald's of operating systems.3 -
6 months exactly into my development career. Finally starting to understand the product and feel like I’m finally getting the hang of stuff. Then a DB task comes up and I feel like I’m back at square one.1

one of my previous employers would just box up your stuff, if you were fired or transferred. Once, a teammate came back from lunch to find her stuff boxed up and thought she was fired, when she'd actually been promoted to another team for a job she'd applied to months before1

Monitoring goes does in one of our server racks, one I had just been working in (other side of the building). Hmm, odd. Oh wait its back online again. Better go take a quick peek to see whats up, just in case. Walks over to rack. Everything seems fine. Walks back to desk. About 15sec later. Fqdn.plsfckof is offline again. -_-

Dev work estimation is harder when the higher ups gives you a one line jira description and expect you to provide them with a timeline. Like how many times i gotta send the ticket back up the pipeline ><1

Was working on Windows 10 laptop with SSD.
Put to sleep mode n went for lunch.
Came back, switched on, blue screen.
Restarted, can not boot.
Opened back panel, removed ssd, connected to other machine with cable, did not detect. Shit, my 1tb SSD is gone.
Took out old rusty 128gb SSD, reformatted it.
Downloaded windows 10 bootloader on USB n reinstalled windows.
From my backed up choco script, reinstalled all apps.
Back to work.1 -
Guys am i the only one removing my pants by jumping backward into the bed and rolling back until I'm leg up, catching my ankle and pulling?
It's the most efficient way I found4 -
Has anyone fucked up/made a big mistake on a project? Missed a deadline? What did you do and how'd you bounce back?9

fucking web hosts blocking all SMTP ports outgoing, forcing me to use PHP mail from their shitty blacklisted IP's.
Since I can't use a web api to send the mail Iended up setting up my home server to forward port 53 back out to the mail server, alot of hassle to get mail working :(14 -
UPDATE ON E REPO: it's back up? I don't know what happened but I couldnt find it 2 days ago and now is back. So yea. It's archived but I have a form of it if anyone wants to check it out.

Eclipse deleting my entire project, roughly few thousand LOC and a lot of assets. (Probably my silly mistake, though I don't know what I did)
Good thing I had a half a week old back up2 -
My Fuxking iPhone just keeps scrolling up. I have no idea why and it did not drop. It’s literally a week old. Among all the shit I have refused to give a shit about, this now number one. In a way it controls my social media usage. Scrolling down Instagram and suddenly it bounces back up like “bitch get off this damn app”. I oblige. My ability to simply not give a fuck always surprises me. Lmao I can’t even scroll down my emails without two fingers, one literally holding the screen so it doesn’t bounce back up. Apps that auto load are the worst and I should probably be more concerned. I can barely use iMessage coz it keeps scrolling up to previous messages and coz of how iMessage was built, it’ll simply keep scrolling up to load old messages.5
-
Everytime I go back to native Android, I end up: -Wasting a lot of hours with gradle and the shitty dependency system.
-Doing a couple of cours of actual coding and finishing what I needed to do.
-Swearing to never come back5 -
being middleware... had to split up back end work in two parts which wasn't necessary but for 1 day it is split up and at the end 3 days delayed because of split up... controlling temper was the biggest challenge of that part.

Any advice to how to get back my motivation? I love coding, but now I can't keep up my motivation long enough :(5

For some reason I now wake up at 6am every day...
But after like an hour in bed reading emails/news, I feel tired and then go back to sleep till 9am...
Anyone else waking up early since wfh?4 -
Was working on a game with some friends a while ago and had a HDD fail before I could back it up and lost 48 hours of progress so spent all night hammering it back to how it was before the data loss...
Never stressed so much in my life tbh7 -
My laptops ram gave up one me on Monday, will take me 2 weeks at least to get back from warranty service !
I started smoking because of this...
FUCKING WHY ?6 -
sent a follow up email to 2 separate companies asking for their decision.

When the new guy changes the format of the code and fucks it up and you have to go back and fix it... slowly raises gun to head
-
A.I. steals my job?
I guess the I.T. guy fixing things up is a good option.
In the mean time the A.I. will learn about devRant and start ranting about things we messed up. He will then lose faith and resign from continuing.
Gets the job back. -
I needed to switch back to my laptop's keyboard (I usually have it hooked up to an external setup) but I'm instantly reminded why I don't like it...
The Up and (eph) button don't work.... can't get code or any decent typing done....2 -
So, I was asked to build something. Not a problem. The moment it was complete. "Actually we need it to do this instead". Not a problem. "Actually it's not needed, can we go back to the old way".
Contain this chain for several months with the exact same changes back and forth, back and forth. Each time its two days in cost and time. Meanwhile, it takes me seconds to revert and commit from a branch to do the changes.
I'll use the time to catch up of other things but...
MAKE UP YOUR FUCKING MIND ALREADY!
If you waste my time, I'm going to waste yours.5 -
Was looking forward to this week, since classes were cancelled, was going to begin working on some iOS projects I’ve been holding back on.
Wake up today, and guess what, classes aren’t cancelled anymore.

Fucking client takes a week to get back to me, and when they do and I jump into their staging environment to test, it's like WTF? How could you fuck up those instructions I gave you?

So I finally got full computer access 2 and a half weeks into working, and now there's "scheduled network downtime" with no indication of when it will be back up. I swear I'm never going to get anything done here

Why, god why... Why does my track pad stop working everytime I boot back from Windows into linux.. It usually takes just a couple reboots within Linux and it's back up and going... but now it's stuck... ugh..
-
of late my team has slipped in the rather irritating habit of not scheduling review meetings; instead they just announce during scrum that they'll have a review right after scrum. this just messes up the day. you go to scrum thinking 15-20 minutes, and boom you end up with 3 hours of back to back unscheduled meetings
-
Would some Android devs please step up? At the rate all the cool apps are popping up on iOS I'm gonna end up with an iPhone again and I don't wanna go back to the ecosystem :/4

I felt all energized during a long holiday around here sleeping wholeheartedly and in the last night of the holiday I stayed up late and now I'm here back to my usual routine with my usual sleepy self.

React native just fucked me up. Nothing works. Now I'm rolling back to how the repo was 2 weeks ago, and I'm going to code every single feature I did in the last 2 weeks all over again. FML.

Ended up dong an internship for my school (not really internship, more along the lines of formal volunteering, but whatever) helping set up laptops for a statewide standardized assessment.
I made a program to log the machine's identifying info (Serial, MAC addresses, etc), renames it, joins it to the school's Active Directory, and takes notes on machines, which gets dumped into a csv file.
Made the classic rookie mistake of backing things up occasionally, but not often enough. Accidentally nuked the flash drive with the data on it, and spent a good while learning data recovery and how grep works.
Lesson Learned? Back up frequently and back up everything -
Am I wrong if I say that I'm fed up with working for startups and that I don't want to go back for a long time. Feeling so good now!6

Manager wants to sign me up for sponsored Apigee training and certification and i wasn't sure if it's good or bad (even now)
Me: ohh, nice
Manager: let me know asap. I'll get back to you.
*Manager comes back after 2 mins*
Manager: have you decided?
Me: uhm, yeah i haven't finished looking. I'll get back to you in 30mins
*Manager comes back after an hour*
Me: does this have a bond?
Manager: no
Me: okay, I'll get back to you tom
Poll question: is it a go or no go?1 -

Today I decided to try one-handed Dvorak, without any prior knowledge about the layout.

"m" was on the numbers row. -
No...
I didn't spend the whole weekend (some 20 hours) wiping my server and setting it back up because it was a steaming pile of garbage...
then fucking it up again and redoing the whole process again....
.... and for good measure again because stupid me.....
GAAAAAAAAAAA
but at least it is working now :) -
Some client coming back to me claiming some page "suddenly" changed style and fucked stuff up.
Yea, stuff like that totally happens. I'm like 90% sure someone messed with the styling... -
I think the "ultimate success" means success on a personal level:
Take a step back. Realize *this* does not matter. It allows you to build and support your own family. Be with your loved ones. Have pets. See your kids grow up. Grow old together. Looking back on a fulfilling life. Dying surrounded by your loved ones. Knowing, they are safe and cared for. I'm so proud of you what you have created out of nothing! You truly are a developer!
And now go back arguing about tabs vs. spaces on the internet.1 -
Life is too short to have commented codes; don't want to go back to it once it shows up in the static code analysis scan9

Wanna buy a mechanical keyboard so much, but don't want to give up on macbook's trackpad. I'm so used to it that cannot switch back to mouse3
-
If I had a dollar for every time a mother fucker in QA distracted me and threw me out of focus..
Nothing against QA but an unnecessary interaction costs me about an hour of downtime trying to back up to speed. -
That horrible moment when your 'documentation is something that happens to someone else' approach (due to lack of time) catches up with you and you have to go back and generate data dictionaries and diagrams on a deadline.
Gah -
My sense of confidence goes up when I have to explain CSS cascading and absolute vs relative units to back end devs, and their brains explode a little3

Damn it XenCenter! Why won't you reboot the VMs like I tell you!? Force reboot also didn't work. Now I have to shut it down and restore a back up VM. This has been going on for the past 2 weeks!!

>new feature in application uses external API
>external API has unreliable response times, requires polling to get results, no way to set up webhooks or whatever
>tech lead proposes asynchronous system which will queue up user requests for processing and use websockets to warn frontend clients of finished query results
>higher ups say it will take too much time, make tech lead cut back in scale and treat external API like a regular synchronous REST API
>team dutifully implements feature within the constraints of the new smaller scope
>higher ups try out the feature, find the usage experience is extremely shitty, but don't back down, they only let tech lead scale back to original scope in small increments that still allow new problems to show up
>feature takes up same time or longer, but with more damage to the mental health of developers
At least I'm not in that team1 -
Bug report: on Android, when checking your profile and you scroll all the way to the bottom, it's impossible to scroll back up. It just gets stuck. @dfox4

When you get called from someone at two employers back because of some Python code you wrote back then asking why their changes in the code do not work and you know exactly by the way they talk they just messed up the indentation. *facepalm*

What's in your opinion the best way to back up/clone video files from an sd card on to 3 external usb harddisks, simultaneously?
I have to assist in a video shoot and I don't see doing this back up work manually.4 -

Girls and software development are not different, you fall in love with their front-end, then end up realizing all you just wanted is to screw their back-end.1

Does anyone else's notifs glitch out on here? I keep clearing them but every time I load it back up my notifications are back - currently up to 16 and they won't go away10

Damn, history web API really sucks for SPAs that have a hierarchical navigation structure.
For example there's no built-in way to know whether the back or forwards button were clicked, only that one of them was clicked.
And if you reload the page, any state you pushed remains in the history stack. So the user might not be able to go back in your application anymore, but they can still press the browser back button and all those states you pushed will be fucking up your navigation system3 -
So I was working on my game finishing up the first level when I try going back through the portal to the previous scene then my unity freezes had to end process using task manager and lost progress

Is there any way to make a file on your Linux or Windows computer where you can back up your phone through the magic of the interwed?

So TIL chat-gpt can’t COUNT!! Since my eyes suck I asked it to return the last 24 chars of a string just as a quick sanity check and it gives me back a substring of only five. Went back to correct and it returns a substring of 7 😫😫😫😫!!!!
I gave up 🤬. It always fails basic calculations for some fucked reason5 -
Got rid in Windows completely because I realised I could never mine without the i3-wm. I can't help but remember when my Pokémon leveled up way back in the day and think

So it's been a burden I carried for long.
With the way I set npm up, I unconsciously did the installing process with sudo, and thus can't use npm properly without a sudo.
Is there a rather not convoluted way to set it back up so I don't have to use sudo again for that?11 -
I am having problem in setting up my previous magento2 website to a new local-host. It's not redirecting from there also I can't go in the back-end. I am seeking some expert's help....please...

just figured out why my change blew up all the tests and fixed it - now I can go back to blog-reading and pretending to be a diligent dev... Can't wait to go on Vacation tomorrow!

Microsoft Word. Back in the day, that's what was used to write documentation.
I would give up after many unsuccessful attempts to get tables, indentation and numbering to work just the way I wanted them to. -
Why, oh god why, is our microservice component responsible for translating our output back into your obscure namespace xml format based on a Guidewire policy models? Why are we not just sending you back a Json - which is our output - and you have to figure it out into your details? Who messed this up?

We were learning how to code circles to light up in sequence. As it's similar to how code works for Arduino. Cool. Go back to c# in Unity and teach what the code does not just copy.

being in B2B sometimes feel like being in an inception film.
client= 1st party , platform = 2nd party, us= 3rd party, client's customers = fucker party
if 3rd party fucks up, client comes pointing finger at us. we then give a finger back to client and point fingers towards the platform's mess👉👉
if fucker party fucks up, client again comes pointing finger at us. we again give a finger back to client and point fingers to client's code mess👉👉
if we fuck up, client again comes pointing finger at us. we again give a finger back to client and points towards the clock to wait to fix our mess 👉👉
and if client could not identify who fucked up, they again comes pointing finger at us. we keep that finger to ourselves , identify who fucked up and then run with a finger towards them.👉👉
its all just fingers everywhere👉.👆.👈. 🖕.2 -

Just found my first piece of code I wrote 12 years ago, back then OOP was still the thing, man I literally fucked up everything you could fuck up about shared state. Why exactly have we never found a solution for that shit? -
What's up with the scrolling on Devrant? Or rather, the lack thereof. I keep being sent back to the top of the page.

Since the new update I have many issues with loading oft rants.
When I click on a rant, the devRant Logo Smiley Shows up for several seconds, than it Just disappears. And then nothing Happens.

Is it only me?7 -
Oh, hi "metaprogramming" (PHP in runtime), long time no see. Which reminds me why I ended up hating Rails & Ruby so much back then.

Junior frontend here, I really fucked up with SCSS nesting. It's a nightmare to go back and maintain or extend the UI. I really should go back and sort this shit out. Some parts of the hierarchy even contains pointers which I phased out long ago, but somehow it still works.
Let this be a lesson. -_-5 -
i was sitting and shitting for 15 mins and once i was done and shitted, back to my chair and 1 minute later i feel the need to shit again! wtf?

Why are towns with that name filled with fucker up freaks specifically ? -
DevOps fucks up. I search and send them docs for reference, to resolve issue. DevOps brushes it off, fucks up even more. Eventually comes back to docs, reads it and fixes it.
Lost 4 good hours, for which I already had productive plans. DevOps is putting the responsibility of checking whether they're setting it up correctly or not, on me, a dev. I hate this! -
