I used to work with a guy who had 2 PH.Ds, in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and over 600 patents but I kid you not the guy could not use the coffee machine. Now it's not like this coffee machine was as easy as a Keurig, it was some $20,000 espresso machine that took a while to figure out but I tried teaching him how to use it a few dozen times and still he couldn't get it right. It got to the point where I thought he was faking it so that others would make it for him so I offered him $500 if he could figure it out. Still nope. So for the remaining 2 years we worked together I made him coffee whenever he wanted, 2-4 times a day, and he bought me lunch everyday. Before I left the company I bought him a Keurig so that when I left he'd still have coffee.19

Overheard a phone call of a collegue:
Person on phone (P): okay so how do I upload the code?
Colleague (C): well you could use filezilla for example
P: oh... okay... yeah.... So how does that work?
C: you said earlier that you were going to hire a more technical person, a developer, to develop this wordpress side, maybe he/she could help you out with this?
P: I am that developer.
C: 😶😐10 -
Oh for crying out loud, Github is stopping with the term 'master' due to its 'negative association'.
Can we please not pull everything out of goddamn context and not be a fucking offended special snowflake with ANYTHING that could potentially be thought of in a way that could be associated with slavery?!
If we're gonna do it like this I want to ask people of color not to use white/light themed websites/backgrounds.173 -
Maybe I could get better bug reports from clients if I made them use this.
I wonder if it has Jira integration.5 -
Manager: Hey, this is Junior. he will work with you from now on.
Me: Oh cool, we could use some help.
(moments later...)
Junior: Hey i got this error. Im new with this engine. sorry.
Me: It cool, then you should read the documentation first. its all there. including your error.
Junior: whats documentation?
Me: ...
For all the cunts ever existed! what do they teach to programmers in college these days?!16 -
This should probably be labeled a meme, but I'm going to actually rant about this meme.
People use the term hacker way too frequently. Solving your trashy fucking "Pa$$w0rd123" password and getting access to your Spotify account isn't hacking.
Same douchewaffle probably thinks you could hack a Facebook account in 30 seconds. I fucking hate the way movies have portrayed hacking and created a dramatized bullshit idea for people to believe is real.21 -
Talking with a dev friend:
- I want to create a program. Want to help me?
- Sure, any ideas?
- Yeah, I'd like to create a paint software using Java
- Cool
After 3 mins:
- Nah I just realized it'd take too long and no one would use it. Wanna play Rainbow Six tho?
- Okay
After playing for 15 mins:
- Holy shit! This game is so buggy. I could make it better
After 3 mins:
- Nah I just realized it'd take too long and no one would use it. Wanna create a paint software using Java?14 -
I guess that is what you get for bringing up security issues on someones website.
Not like I could read, edit or delete customer or company data...
I mean what the shit... all I did was try to help and gives me THIS? I even offered to help... maybe he got angry cause I kind of threw it in his face that the whole fucking system is shit and that you can create admin accounts with ease. No it's not a framework or anything, just one big php file with GET parameters as distinction which function he should use. One fucking file where everything goes into.21 -
The thing that I hate the most about my job:
Manager: We need to get this done.
Me: okay. (after some scouring online) this open source library looks like a perfect fit for the requirement.
Manager: oh sweet.
*some eons later*
Me: dude, I developed this general purpose utility and I think this might be helpful to other developers and something that we could open source.
Manager: uh no. Company policy.
Me: but we make use of open source libraries all the time.
Manager: that's different.4 -
We had a short power outage this morning. 30 min later I got an "urgent" call that someone's "computer" was not working in another branch of our company.
Not one person in that branch could figure this out so after them repeatedly messaging and calling me for around an hour I decided to come over.
I found out that the power wall plug to the monitor has a switch on it which this person accidentally kicked...
I fixed his problem in around 20 seconds. This same employee was one that somehow had his email account previously "hacked" and 8000 phishing emails were sent from his account in 1 hour.
I honestly think it is amazing people like this can even use a computer at all...5 -
*reads JSON license*
"The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil."
Well that's actually a nice license.. if only nuclear research etc could be licensed like that.
Wait actually.. WanBLowS is using XML for its "diagnostic data", right? I always found it so weird that they don't use JSON for that.. but I guess that this is why 🙃20 -
Standard Sunday evening I guess:
I wake up, satisfied that I already did all my tasks for this week and most of the tasks for next week.
5 minutes before I'm heading to bed I get a message from my boss saying he's disappointed that there is this one task I didn't finish yet, because he arranged a meeting with a customer about it tomorrow. Well, you know what you fuck, maybe, just maybe you should begin showing interest for your own company and actually use Jira to assign deadlines so people know wtf to prioritize. I'm so pissed off, I've been working for 4 hours straight this evening now, only to bang my head against the wall and realise I can't finish it since I have to buy a Windows 10 machine to test out some features. Fuck you! Maybe tell me next time you have a meeting about a certain thing. Yes, I could have spent more time throughout the week, and yes, you could learn to fucking communicate and show some care for your own company.
English is not my native language, so I can't really express how furious I am right now. And yes, he's genuinely mad at me.8 -
Once had a classmate schedule a meeting with me to "go over something" for a project we had together. (Not a CS class, but it was a general education class.)
I agree, make time on my schedule for this meeting.
I get there and they say "Yo I just wanted to let you use my flash drive so you could make some changes to the PowerPoint I started last night. Just get it back to me a few days before the project is due and we'll look over it together."
You asshole. Go fuck yourself.
This lesson taught me to ask what meetings are about in order to prevent this bullshit2 -
The Indian state of Kerala uses Linux(Edubuntu) in all the schools. This incident happened back in 2010. I was not that proficient in Linux but I liked it for some reasons.
So one day, one of my IT teachers was handed the responsibility to edit a video. Being the School Student IT Convenor, he asked for my help. I'm no Video Editor but this thing was so easy that Openshot was enough.
While I was at it, he said: "Why does the govt. want us to use such unprofessional stuff? If it was Windows we could do everything very easily. Who is ever gonna use Linux in a professional environment? The govt. is spoiling the children by urging them to use Linux, Free Software and Open Source."
I couldn't argue that day. But today I so wish I could go back and roast him!4 -
So yesterday was a regular old day where I came into the office and began my work. My office mate that sits next to me happens to be having an issue with her batch script. It wasn't running correctly so she had decided to call in IT and have them take a look at it. What she was trying to do was process some images through a dedicated super-computer located on site.
So as you can imagine with both of them standing right next to me it was hard not to listen in on their conversation. The IT guy decided to go through a barrage of different troubleshooting methods to figure out what was happening with her script. And soon enough they discovered what was wrong. It happened to be an issue with how Windows decides to deal with new line characters. FYI it looks like this shit "\n \r"
The fucking \r looked like a directory to Linux. So it would squeal to a halt every single time she tried to run.
How this happened was due to her using notepad to edit her batch file.
At this point, I made a comment about her use of Notepad.
"Oh, you're using notepad? I've had similar issues like this in the past when I've used notepad. I really hate notepad." I said with a slight chuckle.
And that was pretty much the end of our encounters. However, at the end of the day, she decided to speak up about this.
"I don't appreciate you making comments about my use of Notepad. That was a form of microaggression towards me, and I don't want you to do it again."
Completely taken aback I replied.
"I'm sorry you took it that way, it was a joke and wasn't meant to be taken personally."
"Well, your intent does not change impact. And by the way, I take pride in my code and scripting. I don't need your commentary about my code nor your micro-aggressions." She said in a huff.
"Well again, I'm sorry you feel that way," I replied back
*I'd like to say that this situation is loosely paraphrased, but the essence of what happened is still there.
At this point, this is what I have to say about this situation. Why the FUCKING FUCK are you using notepad to program anything. There ARE A SHIT TON of differing programs that are available for your use and you decide to use fucking notepad?!?! $%&*@#$^
You could use notepad++, you could use Sublime, you could use every-fucking-thing except Notepad!!! If anything I think I had every right to make a comment about your stupid use of notepad. And darling, your script not working was well deserved, I hope you run into more errors like this because you deserve nothing less for your arrogance. So you can take your opinions and shove them up your fat-ass because at the end of the day I don't give a FUCK about your opinions on my micro-aggressions that you're spouting off about.
I suggest the next time you feel attacked about your code perhaps you should take a cold hard look at yourself before thinking that I'm the one that is the FUCKING problem.17 -
About 6 years ago, my boss found out about social media and how he could use it to boost his business. So he created a Facebook page.
A week later he called me to his office and asked me to move the page's profile picture from left to right. I told him this was not possible and was something Facebook doesn't allow us to do.
Next thing I know he started telling me to check and try before I say no, and should never say no as anything was possible.
Obviously, I quit.2 -
Roommate: "Hey, man, uh, I know you use computers a lot or something; do you know off the top of your head how to use the touch screen on my computer?"
Me: "Uh, your laptop doesn't have a touch screen."
Roommate: "Yeah, but I thought you might know how to use it as a touchscreen."
Me: "...Your laptop does not have a touch screen."
I swear, this is the dumbest man I have ever come into contact with.
That'd be fine if this was a one-off type of thing, but he seriously has approx. 209.8 brain cells in total.
Once, with no argumentative basis, he told me that, if Mickey Mouse got enough votes as a write-in candidate, he could win the Presidency of the United States. I showed him Article II of our Constitution, and he said "why does that even matter here?"
Three more months, school'll be done, and I never have to see him again.7 -
Happened half a year ago (parents both use Linux although they're very a-techie).
*Dads laptop comes back from store after a repair*
Dad: (on the phone) hello son, could you help me out? they put some weird stuff on my laptop at the repair centre...
Me: Weird stuff? like what?
Dad: It's a virus I think
Me: A virus??
Dad: Definitely a virus!
Me: And what is this virus called?
Dad: Windows 10!
Me: Oh yes coming over asap to get that removed!
I put elementary OS on it again when i went to visit my parents.17 -
Making a meme to pass the time...
All this waiting, only because I wanted to try one small thing -.-
Oh boy, JPEG compression strikes again...
Wish I could upload pngs. Then I could use alpha channel too.3 -
Some back info that you need to know for this rant:
1) I am a Canadain, so I spell 'color' like: colour.
2) Americans spell 'colour' like color.
Today I was debugging a Python file that I and my team of Americans and Canadians were working on. I ran the code and got an error that one of our variables was named incorrectly. I searched the code up and down for 3+ hours looking for the issue. After taking my lunch break I came back and read the file again. Then I realized it: I had started working on one part spelling color like colour, and then an American finished the project, spelling colour like color, so there were two different variables. This really pissed me off because we could have fixed it by deciding on a language before we started the project. I fixed it quickly and now we have a new rule at the office: always use American English when naming variables.
Moral of the story: decide which language to use for variables when working on a multi-national team.10 -
This startup I started working for with their shitty code base written by interns, restrictive sys admin who had no actual use in the company since I was the one setting up their servers, know-it-all CEO, stupid HR representative who used to grill employees for being 10 minutes late in the morning, very small apartment "HQ", using fingerprints to signal our entry and our leave to and from the office, no formal process, and, to top it all, monitoring our own laptops which we use for work with a software that takes screenshots every few minutes. In short, it had the worst in corporates with the worst of startups combined in one company.
If, hypothetically, we could overlook all this, I couldn't overlook the horrible smell this place had. The apartment was overlooking a small garden which was a home for many stray cats and dogs. You can imagine how horrible this smell was. The weird thing was that no one there seemed to really care about the smell!!
I lasted there for only one week before I gave my resignation and I believe I had every right to do so.3 -
So my in-laws got a new computer 😑
Yup you know where this is going. Ok so after I transferred all of their data set them all up etc.
They wanted to use "word" and could I set it up for free for them. I said no Microsoft office is not free you lost your license and disk and your old computer is trashed so the better choice would be Google services . So I explained the value of using Google drive, docs, sheets etc.. today and told them how much better it is everything would be on their Google drive so if I got hit by a bus they could get a new computer again and still have access to their data etc... So they said great and so I did.
Two weeks later... Can you set up word for us on our computer. Me annoyed at this point " sure no problem"
I made a shortcut on their desktop to Google docs. Them: oh boy this is great see John all you have to do is click on google docs to go to word! Thanks so much!

I hate it when I try and have a discussion with another dev and the conversation devolves into something akin to:
Me: I'm doing a thing in y language! How do I do z using y language?
Dev: WHY ARE YOU USING Y LANGUAGE?! Y LANGUAGE SUCKS AND IF YOU USE IT YOU'RE STUPID. ALL REAL DEVS USE X LANGUAGE.
I just wanted to know how to do something. Maybe I don't want to do it in another language. Maybe I have to use this language for work/study. Maybe I've just been given legacy spaghetti code and can't change the system easily.
Why do people feel the need to do this? And if they want to flame a language why can't they do it constructively?
Dev: If you are trying to do a thing in y language, why don't you try using x language? It offers an easier way for you to complete the task that you want, and it has other amazing features too!
Then you could actually respond with the appropriate response which would be thanks but no thanks because of this reason or thanks i'll check it out.
No need to be so elitist all the time.3 -
Prof: So yeah this is going to be difficult. We're going to make the scalable math library. Then we have to make a functional finite elements library using that. Then make a multiphysics engine using that library. This could easily take your entire PhD. Are you prepared for that?
Me: May I show you something?
Prof: Sure, sure.
Me, showing him: We can use moose to code in the multiphysics. It's built atop libmesh for the finite elements. Which can be built with a petsc backend. Which we can run on GPUs and CPUs, up to 200k cores. All of this has been done for us. This project will, at worst, take a couple months.
Prof: ...
Guys, libraries. Fucking. Libraries. Holy fucking shit.5 -
99% of our server-side code is Python and PHP (legacy applications).
Asked a junior dev to make a small update to a PHP site so we could have it run some cleanup server side. Plenty of existing PHP code to look at and piece something together. Should be 50 lines max.
Did he use the existing PHP code to do this task? Nope. Did he at least use Python? Nope.
Node.js
His response?
"I couldn't figure it out and Node.js seemed to have good support for mongo so I used that instead."
We have 0 lines of server side javascript. Never had node installed. Literally none of the devs use node here. Not only is this completely outside of our tech stack, but he had to take the time to learn Node and JS just because he thought it was easier.
Much would of rather he put in twice as much time to learn the tools of our stack.8 -
I hate access. I wish I could use literally any other program. But they're not authorized.
I'm the only one working on this, and everything is closed. How the fuck is the object in use somewhere else? And where the fuck did my primary key go???7 -
So customers can place orders at our website, but some of the products are actually handled by a third party. We use a web service to communicate about these orders. Obviously, we need a way to uniquely identify each order, and decided with this other company that we would use a simple incrementing integer.
Last week, something strange happened: we could no longer cancel orders by their ID, because according to the web service, the orders were placed too long ago and were no longer eligible for cancellation. But I knew that could not be true: the orders were from last week. So I checked out database, turns out the ID's are not so unique: some refer to two or three orders. Somewhat worried, I contact the guy responsible at the other company and ask him how that could ever happen?
He: "Yeah, when we restart our server, the counter goes back to 1, you see. I didn't think that would be a problem...".
REALLY?! YOU DIDN'T THINK?5 -
So, after weeks of reading spicy rants from all of you, I finally decided to join your community ; even if I'm only a student, I've encountered some solid crap in my internships.
Let's go back in time bois. Two years ago, I started my first intership at a Fortune 500 company (this doesn't exists in France, but whatever, this is nearly the same category). I was supposed to build some file sharing system for the office. Before getting into it, I briefly thought aboyt what technos I could use to build it and make a sweet interface for my co-workers, in 10 weeks, and not a single another day.
Expectations
> Nice team with devs that I could ask things about and learn solid tricks that would even amaze David Copperfield
> Having a nice dev environment
Reality
> Alone on this project
> No fucking dev environment, I had to build everything on Notepad
> No CI
> No SCM
> And, the worst, Ladies and Gentlemans,
I FUCKING HAD TO WORK IN A SINGLE FILE IN A CLOSED ENVIRONMENT.
NO WEBSERVER, NO DEDICATED SPACE.
I HAD TO REQUEST A SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENT IN A CLOSED CUSTOM CMS THAT WAS SERVING FILES, SO THIS FORMAT COULD BE READ ON FOLDER OPENING IN IE9 (FIREFOX FORBIDDEN).
YOU HAD TO MIX HTML, CSS AND JS IN A SINGLE FILE. NO SERVER-SIDE LANGUAGES, ONLY STATIC LINKS, NO FRAMEWORKS (if we can call jQuery, Bootstrap, Semantic UI and all these thinks "Frameworks").
> mfw at the end of the intership13 -
Business User: Hey can we get a sample output you plan to send us?
Me: yes heres a mock
BU: This doesn't look right, can you use real values?
Me (said nicely): WELL IF WHEN YOU WROTE THE FCKIN REQUIREMENTS WEREN'T SO VAGUE AND ACTUALLY PROVIDED REAL VALUES FOR THE INPUTS WE WOULD GET AND WHAT WE SHOULD OUTPUT USING THEM MAYBE I COULD GIVE YOU A BETTER SAMPLE... AND DO LESS GUESSING ABOUT WHAT THE FUCK YOU ACTUALLY WANT...
BU: Oh I forwarded some data
Me: *looks at input data*
(thoughts) THIS FUCKING MAKES NO SENSE!! NOWHERE DOES ANYTHING LOOK LIKE WHAT YOU WANTED.... HOW ABOUT I PULL MAGIC VALUES OUT OF MY ASS?6 -
me: "hey look, something new and awesome I could use in my projects!" (WebAssembly in this case)
also me: "I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT I WOULD USE THIS FOR"3 -
I don't think I could give the best advice on this since I don't follow all the best practices (lack of knowledge, mostly) but fuck it;
- learn how to use search engines. And no, not specifically Google because I don't want to drag kids into the use of mass surveillance networks and I neither want to promote them (even if they already use it).
- try not to give up too easily. This is one I'm still profiting from (I'm a stubborn motherfucker)
- start with open source technologies. Not just "because open source" but because open source, in general, gives one the ability to hack around and explore and learn more!
- Try to program securely and with privacy in mind (the less data you save, the less can be abused, compromised, leaked, etc)
- don't be afraid to ask questions
-enjoy it!7 -
By heavens creating your own api server with the Go standard lib is so easy it should be fucking criminal.
Now....on to add authentication and a nice frontend stack(prob React) to make it all spiffy and show it to my manager and see if she lets me put this shit to use at work.
It will make it more interesting. It took me nearly 1 hour to get what I needed from the docs, build it using the net package first(das right babe, pure TCP) and just a couple of minutes more for net/http and boom. Ferching info and shit left and right
Man I love this shit. Wish I could do this for a living. Stuck fucking around with css, Java and php at work instead ;____;10 -
*receives an old business laptop as payment for refurbishing another one*
Hmm, this thing doesn't have a charger with it.. looks like it's taking 18.5V.. my HP laptop's charger supplies that but its barrel connector doesn't fit 🤔
Regular users: oh dear now I have to buy a charger with a fitting connector for this.. where do I even start?!
Me: Well I guess I could just remove the charging port and solder some wires straight into the board instead 🤔
But that voltage.. my HP laptop's charger is still in use and I don't really want to fuck around with that one.
Regular users: oh dear oh dear, shouldn't I just throw this laptop away?
Me: well I guess that I could just use one of the rails of my upgraded lab bench power supply for it?
Lab electronics saving the day, every day, time and time again.. fuck yeah 😎6 -
Woke up at 5am with the realization that I could use regular expressions to parse the string representation of regular expressions to build this program to parse regular expressions into more human-readable English.
I am so tired.7 -
Writing a, for me, quite big system and had about everything ready to go, the earliest version about works.
But, it's written for one (broad) specific use case and guess what: in the past few weeks, a few other use cases have presented themselves. The 'principle' is the same so I could integrate them into the current system, but; then I'd have to rewrite the entire thing to be more flexible.
I think I'm going to do that but damn I've been debating this for hours now 😬10 -
This was on a key cutting machine at the range:
1) They use XP
2) They use Java
3) It was touch screen so I could have gotten up an on screen keyboard and actually used the command prompt6 -
So after fucking around with trying to setup pi-hole to block avatars in devrant, so I could just use it instead of a no-root firewall and accidentally deleting the devrant app data, I discovered this little option, let's pretend it was never there 🙄7
-
Just had a code review where I commented that we should use linq's ".Single()" here because we don't expect or tolerate zero or multiple matches in this scenario and their response was "but copilot says -" and I didn't know so few words could make me so irrationally angry.7
-
I’m doing my friend website css, not only it’s hard but I spend like 1 hour trying to figure out why I could use png image but jpg image couldn’t show up. Then I just convert the jpg to png. Not sure if this gonna affect the site on the future
I hope not6 -
I feel all of us here could use this brilliant quote by Douglas Adams.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.1 -
On reccomendation of @chabad360 I made this its own rant.
I switched from marketing to CS (complete with a three year degree, no Bootcamp). I still went to interviews as you'd expect a marketing man to go; in a suit. Commence the weirdest interview.
$I: interviewer
$M: Me
I: "You're not the typical engineer. Can you talk to real engineers?"
M: "could you elaborate"
I:"you're dressed in a suit. That leads me to think you're a MS user. Do you think you could talk to real, ie. Linux using engineers?"
M: " well, I haven't used windows in about a year soo..
I: "Mac isn't Linux."
M: "I'm aware. I've switched to Ubuntu so I could use KVM-QEMU android emulator with GPU pass through to train Deep Convolution Networks on mobile devices. Also had to compile Google's internal build tool because it had bugs I had to fix so I could compile the APK."
I: "ah, Ubuntu eh? **Insert Smirk** How about a follow-up?"
M: "no, I'm switching to Gentoo this week and would like to talk to real engineers about that."
I thanked him for the coffee and left.1 -
They want me to be a speaker at this event , I wrote them this
Regarding this statement on the speaker form “Presentation rooms are set up theatre style with a lectern, lectern mic, screen, laptop with Windows XP Office
2007/Vista XP and a projector.” – is it just an old form?
I do have one question what does this mean exactly? Are you actually using windows xp? it’s not supported by Microsoft anymore, so it’s quite dangerous to have unless it’s not attached to the internet what so ever and never has been. Vista… is not much better. Windows 7 is 2008 you should at least be using that I would of thought? I mainly ask because if I am going to speak about technology and computers I can’t exactly say I’m an expert when I’m using tech as old as that. I mean I’m 20 I was 7 when xp came out, I know how to use it but it’s ancient, in computer terms It’s as old as Aztec times and I’d rather not be sacrificed to a sun god (seriously if anyone who knows tech at all sees me I’ll be embarrassed and taken the piss out of majorly).
Could I just use my laptop? If needs be?
Sorry to be a pain1 -
I feel that I should mention my reason for having joined devRant.
Although I often write computer programs, I do not consider myself to be a computer programmer, for the problems which I solve often do not pertain to the method which I use to solve a problem with a computer program. Rather, I am an intelligence analyst, and this has been my title for approximately sixteen (16) years.
I joined devRant not only because I wished to better the computer programs which I write, although this could be better accomplished by again reading the specifications for the programming languages which I use, but also because I wished to join an on-line community of which the members are interesting and competent. As I read threads, I observe that both of these requirements have been matched, with the emphasis being placed on the latter requirement.
I thank the majority of you for maintaining an on-line community which is not (total) crap. Ha.9 -

So a few of you devranters were asking if my devrant-widget project was open source.
Well I finally felt confident enough to share my devrant-widget project on github so a link is now available :) I'm pretty new to the open source community so go easy on me xD but I think this project could do some good.
Its just a simple widget I wrote in php this past week that pulls your profile data and the widget can be customized a little via json configuration.
Anyways, feel free to use it in your projects, make suggestions or contribute to the project if interested.

You have to integrate company A system with company B.
You look up B`s api documentation, write the necessary code, test it thoroughly. Done
__________________________________
A wild dev from B has appeared!!!
------------------------------------------------------
him > you cannot use this SDK to implement this solution. You must use a different one...
You > (coming back to him after scouring through the docs) . Ok which sdk is it then? I can't find it anywhere. Could you send it to me pls?
him > I don't kbow, my knowledge doesn't go that far. Send an email to the dev department.
After sending the email, and spending a couple of days trying to figure out which sdk was he referring to. His department answers that the sdk you should use, is the one you already used. The only one they have.
A couple of days lost, because certain smart-ass could not refrain himself from meddling in the project.
What would you do?
Note: Killing him is out of the question :)8 -
!dev - cybersecurity related.
This is a semi hypothetical situation. I walked into this ad today and I know I'd have a conversation like this about this ad but I didn't this time, I had convo's like this, though.
*le me walking through the city centre with a friend*
*advertisement about a hearing aid which can be updated through remote connection (satellite according to the ad) pops up on screen*
Friend: Ohh that looks usefu.....
Me: Oh damn, what protocol would that use?
Does it use an encrypted connection?
How'd the receiving end parse the incoming data?
What kinda authentication might the receiving end use?
Friend: wha..........
Me: What system would the hearing aid have?
Would it be easy to gain RCE (Remote Code Execution) to that system through the satellite connection and is this managed centrally?
Could you do mitm's maybe?
What data encoding would the transmissions/applications use?
Friend: nevermind.... ._________.
Cybersecurity mindset much...!11 -
Me *setting up some coding environments via the terminal in Ubuntu Budgie*
Some random person next to me: Sorry to interrupt, but what you're doing looks very fascinating. What is it?
Me *tries to explain it as simple as possible*
Person: I didn't know you could do that on Windows! What version are you running?
Me *explains about Linux, dies inside*
Person: but why don't you just use Windows? This sounds too complicated
*friend calls after me, have to leave, saved*2 -
Just got a whiteboard as a present from my gf. Decided to use to for flowchart, but I literally never made a flowchart. This...this doesn't seem right. Anyone got any experience with it? Where could I learn and are they actually useful?5

This week actually. We had an Innovation Week. I was tired of waiting for the company's collaboration tech team to give us some kind of virtual whiteboard system (they also won't let us use things like Google Hangouts or Microsoft One Note, etc...so they make remote collaboration and planning almost impossible)
Anyways long story aside I proposed we make a virtual whiteboard we could host internally as a web app using STOMP over Websocket. They said "there's no way you can finish that in a week". I did.
And it came out great. It even supports pressure sensitivity and different brush textures. Everyone loves it and teams are like...wow we could use this member facing too. Had like 5 people around my desk connected to it drawing dicks for like 30 minutes. Then our boss joined remotely and saw the dicks. They laughed their ass off.
tldr; was told there was no way I would complete an ambitious innovation project...completed it with style. Damn I am good. -
Backstory: A few months ago, I wrote an inventory management web app for internal use by the sales team, logistics, and whoever else might need to use it.
Earlier this week: A few minutes before I usually leave, my phone rings. It's some dude I've never heard of. No idea what his function at the company is, still don't, probably never will, don't care. He's never used the app before, and says he's having problems. His cube's on my way out, so I swing by.
I'm not making this next part up. This dude is probably 60 years old, and he's using a very old looking gateway desktop (with the cow print logo thing on the chassis), running Windows XP (not a typo), using IE7.
I don't know what to say, so I just stare at the desktop, look at dude, laugh, and eventually explain that he's never going to be able to use the system via the web app until his rig is replaced.
What the fucking fuck is this. How could this have happened. How do our it people still fucking have jobs. Better question, how did this thing survive the y2k bug?rant this isn't a museum edge case ffffffuuuuuuuuuuuucccccckkkkk evil sorcery 1999 wants its shit back9 -
WHY THE FUCK! WHY THE FUCKING FUCK! DO I HAVE TO WAIT 3 FUCKING DAYS TO GET A FUCKING VIDEO RENDERED! i didnt buy a new fucking 2080TI for this! WHY THE FUCK DOES THE CPU RENDER THE FUCKING VIDEO!
I mean, we can do fucking REAL TIME RAY-TRACING! And yet, no fucking idiot came to the Idea, "hmm we could let the GPU its intended purpose and dont use the CPU that much." I MEAN, IT HAPPENED, BUT FUCK IT! FUCK ALL OF THIS! FUCKING 74 HOURS!! FOR AN HOUR CLIP!

TL;DR : do we need a read-only git proxy
Guys, I just thought about something and this potential gitpocalypse.
There is no doubt anymore that regardless of Microsoft's decisions about Github, some projects will or already have migrated to the competition.
I'm thinking : some projects use the git link to fetch the code. If a dependency gets migrated, it won't be updated anymore, or worse, if the previous repo gets deleted, it can break the project.
Hence my idea : create some repository facade to any public git repository (regardless of their actual location).
Instead of using github.com/any/thing.git, we could use opensourcegit.com/any/thing.git. (fake url for the sake of the example).
It would redirect to the right repository (for public read only), and the owner could change the location of the actual repository in case of a migration.
What do you think ? If I get enough ++'s, I'll create a git repo about this.6 -
I sat poolside on a tropical island today and worked on a project. I could get use to this freelance lifestyle.3

Today in IT class our teacher said: 'you can only use char and int in a switch statement'
I was confused because I was 100% sure that you could also use string and so when I got out of school I immediately looked it up.
It is true, well it was true until 2011 when Java 7 was released which added the possibility to also use the string data type in switch statements.
In this I see a huge problem with the education system. Teachers (almost) never 'update' their knowledge and then teach outdated stuff to their pupils. While this may not be a problem in some subjects, it definitely is a huge problem in IT.
The development world is always evolving but if the teachers don't follow along the pupils get taught outdated stuff which, in my opinion, is a really big problem when they finish school and go out in the world to find jobs.9 -
Discord cut off a message of mine and ended up showing merely the following line:

2 things I'm working on now:
#1 a personal project I am hoping to commercialize and turn it into my moneymaker. Hoping it'd at least be enough to pay the bills and put food on my table so I could forget 9/5 for good. But it has a potential of becoming a much, MUCH bigger thing. This would need the right twist tho, and I'm not sure if I am "the right twister" :) We'll see.
#2 smth I'm thinking of opensourcing once finished -- a new form of TLS. This model could be unbreakable by even quantum computing once it's mature enough to crack conventional TLS. I'm probably gonna use md5 or smth even weakier - I'm leveraging the weakness of hashing functions to make my tool stronger :)
I mean how long can we be racing with more powerful computers, eh? Why not use our weakneses to make them our strengths?
Unittests are already passing, I just haven't polished all the corner-cases and haven't worked out a small piece of the initialization process yet. But it's very close6 -
I am a senior a DevOps engineer who took the production stack down for ~10 minutes today because of a bad code commit. I could use some encouragement! It’s a fierce world of competitive engineers and I wonder why my company doesn’t replace me. The mistake was missed by two other peer reviews... but that doesn’t stop me from feeling this way.

I started learning Node.js this morning. Wow, mind blown.
I can see how I could use this in an existing web development project.
What are the barriers to using Node.js instead of something else? Are there support/performance issues?24 -
Me, starting this project: "im gonna use a templating engine so i can effectively generate files"
Me, now: "this could have been done by a string replace" -
I started thinking and worrying about numbers much more than before
in the US, you write numbers like this:
1,000.00
in Germany usually like this:
1.000,00
and in programming languages like this:
1000.00
now i wonder how to type a number, whenever i have to use german software
should i use the US way, the german way or the dev way? the wrong one could possibly break it11 -

Today I fucking learnt that RHEL is no longer an open source operating system in the full meaning of the terms starting from 8 onward as it shifts toward being a binary only distribution.
What does this mean? Historically in RHEL you could install packages that would allow you to compile software that would use the system libraries.
Now you can't. These packages are being taken away and no longer provided.
If you wanted an operating system you could develop on or build software on well you need something other than RHEL.
The OS is now crippled. There's a bunch of things you used to be able to do where as now you have to pay for a support contract.23 -
So there’s this SOAP api I have to use (not by choice, and not the only one i have to use) that returns a bunch of XML nodes to confirm the data sent made it and checks out - pretty standard stuff yea.
Now every once in a while it doesn’t respond (as far as I could tell) so today I wrapped a debug around the soap call, error handler and responses and threw a bunch of messages it’s way to try and force it not to respond in order to be able to put some decent error handling in place.
Well it wouldn’t fail.
100 messages .... all responses good
100 more.... all responses good
And then 100 more.... all respond with “x”, plain text not XML as expected!
Wtf is this shit!!!!!rant dirty dirty soap going insane i give up unexpected undocumented responses it’s not me... yay soap6 -

me: i looked into the customer dev's project and even though it's C#, i can use it as a source of inspiration for my own C++ library.
PM: okay, maybe we can even still use it, so that you use a C# dll with your C++ code.
me: ...
other colleague: that's a bad idea. it can already be a challenge to use unmanaged c++ in dotnet, but the other way round it's even more difficult. C# and C++ are languages that behave quite differently and it will be hard to implement a correctly working interface.
PM: okay. well... then please analyze this project's complexity in terms of LOC and create a class diagram, so we get an idea of how complex it is.
me: sure.
PM: hmm... maybe we should split this topic. since dev x will also rely on your library, analyze this project together with him, each of you look at another part of the classes.
me: that's.... i think that's a bad idea. implementing this functionality in this library is my job, not of dev X. he won't be involved in implementing any of the funcionalities and for him, it shouldn't matter how this works.
PM: yeah, but since we are prototyping, maybe we should just violate the "separation of concerns" rule.
me (internally): (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
in the end i could convince him to do it my way, but for fuck's sake... when was the last time he actually succesfully implemented something? 🤦♀️ -

Quick question here, not a rant (sorry).
I heard that you need a lot of math knowledge to become a developer. Is this really true? I don't see where the math comes into play while programming (especially complex stuff). I've been studying C# for quite some time (few years) and I consider myself fairly good at it.
Never came across the need to use !basic mathematics in my projects.

Fucking apple & Mac OS..
So.. Before high sierra, you could create a USB using boot camp.
All good & dandy without too much fuss.
No longer. instead it automatically mounts & copies the os onto a apfs partition(?) and without as much as a mention or warning it just reboots immediately when it's done.
Srsly, not even a silly "hey, we need to reboot"..
Now, I could probably have gone to diskutil, formatted, set the boot flags and copied the files..
But rly, Nvm that.
Besides I might actually find some use in a windows install.
So needing to install windows to create an USB is acceptable.
But Bloody hell, it's been a while since I've been in this triggered from something..
T_T no warnings, just force reboot into windows. -
So, basically what happened today was:
A classmate asked me if I could hack him some money in online games. Later on he saw me using an FTP Client and saied: "Whoa, if I was as good as you I would totally use my skills to hack something!!!"
Yea... no.

I don't like interview coding challenges. At the same time, given the skill level of some developers I've worked with who work for a contracting firm and presumably didn't get a coding test in their intervies...I understand the necessity. Some people are so bad at coding that even the simplest of coding tests can show how bad they are.
I think my favorite is being given a simple task to write code for. And that's it. No "use this specific language feature to do this specific thing". Just a task and that's it.
I got a really simple coding test once. I had to reverse a string. I could choose any language. Presumably they wanted to see loops or something, but I just used Python and did this: string[::-1]
I got the job.3 -
We had a course where we, the students, got connected with companies who could pitch ideas for us to choose. So we were to develop something for a company for free, but that probably won't be so bad, right? When the course was over we told the company we would fix any critical bugs that appeared after the final prototype was developed. We only had 8 weeks to complete the project, and that includes documentation (project plan etc) and other "school stuff" like an essay on what we've learned and so on. In other words, didn't have enough time to develop what the company was really looking for. Still those guys is bugging us about minor bugs they want fixed or "could you just implement this feature" . The course is over, they have all the source code so they could hire someone else to do it (or us, you could pay us you know?) but nooooo they think we owe it to them. We gave them a fully functional application to use, free of charge, but that still isn't enough. And they threaten with "but you can use this in a future resume" (yea we had to sign a NDA). Fuck it, am I being a whiny bitch?3

Why the fuck do people not change their router admin password!? I was at a hotel today and could access their router admin interface with the default credentials. I guess this isn't purely the fault of the hotel because not all people know a damn thing about security and only use the interface to change the SSID and password of the AP. But why allow them to leave the default password? Why isn't this a standard feature to be forced to change the password :|12

I had a USB WiFi dongle installed and working great. Then someone pulled it out of my computer, without talking to me, so they could use it. I found another in the office...exact same model...plug it in. Drivers don't work. Can't update them. Reinstallation crashes. Try to restart computer, it crashes. Restart computer and now Outlook won't even open. No idea what to do now, but this is going on an hour and counting of no productivity.
WTF Windows? You can't even handle a WiFi dongle right?3 -
Woke up an hour early today.

This is also the first time i encountered such a bug in the wild, and i'm way more excited than i should be, hehe.5 -
made a prototype and showed the demo to clients. They asked me where it was stored and how to access to the code. Told them where it was stored was was a trial and it has expired. Asked me why I didn't pay the subscription. Also asked me if I could send them the code, for them to "try using it" and "implement it in their office". Told them if they wanted to use the program, it needs to be done again (since this is a prototype). 3 days now, no sounds from the client.9

I FINALLY GOT CHROME BACK!!! A few weeks ago, my computer, for no reason, said I couldn't use chrome due to Microsoft Family features, despite me not having a Microsoft Family setup. I have been using edge for weeks. Pray for my sanity.
The solution, was to create a new Microsoft account and run chrome as that. But, it does bring up the interesting topic of how much Microsoft sucks. They do this all the time, they look at something that doesn't need meddling with, like my right to use my property and my apllications, and release some garbage they didn't test without thinking of the implications. Did anyone ever as Microsoft for a way to manage your family forcefully? No. Because, if you cared enough, I'm sure you could just download a stupid family app, rather than let Microsoft take hostage of your computers.
One thing really interesting to me was that Firefox nor chrome worked, but edge could launch just fine. A little suspicious, don't ya think, Microsoft?6 -
//Worst day ever.
Everything just broke today. I'm making an app for a website. Of course the site is down and it may not get back up, rendering my work useless.
I wanted to play a game this morning to relax...aaand servers down.
Later I updated the amd drivers on my laptop and now everything is just so slow that I can't use it so I'll be reinstaling windows tomorrow.
And stupid me I thought I could release the app this week.4 -

I saw this image on IBM's blog. The author was explaining how blockchain could be used to implement self sovereign identities. But, isn't the last step wrong? Got asked to fix a bug at work. The code (react) looked like this:
file = form.file;
this.setState({file});
this.methodThatNeedsFile();
So i explained that the changes from setState are not adopted immediately etc. Then i take another look at the code and feel the pain in my head. You could shorten the code to:
this.methodThatNeedsFile(form.file);
Is there some subconscious need in the brain to make use of frameworks even though it makes no goddamn sense and "normal" programming is sufficient? -
Man....I keep up with this strange love hate relationship I have with Python....
Last night it was python that literally wrote my homework: define all possible equivalent partition tables with cause and effect analysis and boundary value checks for a program. The whole thing wrote itself and all I had to do was verify the inputs. Something that I was able to do using jupyter with pandas and numpy. On one hand, I despise the lack of static typing and use of whitespace as a block delimiter. On the other I cannot but help feeling a high level of gratitude over the language and its high availability and ease of use for this.
Sure, I could have used other tools, but this language has dominated hardcore in this regard enough to the point of not considering it being a crime against humanity.3 -
Start to read the book from Jaron Lanier "Who owns the Future". And suddenly realize that the company which offering us "free services" is trying to build a superior model of machine learning and read all of our behaviour.
Thus, i start to logout my facebook, twitter, instagram and all of my social media. But, i'm not the lucky one who could fight this "selling data practices", because I still use devices with "Android OS". My privacy stolen & sold is inevitable. What a Digital Life!23 -
I don't have a life.
So I'm back at work on a Saturday afternoon (admittedly, I prefer this to staying home or going out to ... Clubbing? Idk what the youth does nowadays) and just about every sound frightens me. I don't know but maybe this could help somebody here too, so I'm gonna share this.
I've discovered this Android app called Island, which essentially sandboxes apps by cloning them in its internal environment.
I've sandboxed that Facebook cancer app in order to keep it fucking frozen when I do not use it (I know, web version is good, but I find the app smoother).
It seems to work like a charm (better than greenify-alone ibernation, actually), but I'm still testing it.
Cheers!7 -

I've seen some rants about people complaining about websites using the 'www' subdomain, so I'd like to take this opportunity to try to explain my opinion about why sites might use it.
I use to feel the same way about not having the www subdomain. It felt like an outdated standard that serves no purpose. But I have changed my option...
Sometimes certain servers have other services running other than just the website, such as ssh, ftp, sql, etc., running on different ports. What if you want to use a web proxy and caching service similar to cloudflare or a cdn? We'll you can't, because they won't allow traffic to flow through to your other ports.
That's where the www subdomain comes in. Enable your caching and cdn on your www subdomain, and slap a 301 redirect from your primary domain on port 80 or 443 to the www subdomain. This still allows you to access your other services via the domain name while still gaining the benefits of using a cdn.
Now I know you could use an 'ftp' subdomain or the like, but to each their own in that regard.7 -

Usually my workplace is pretty chill, but today something rantworthy happened!
During code review, I found this guy had styled each element inside his components using nth-child selectors. For instance, in a card the heading was styled by nth-child(1), the text was styled by nth-child(2) and so on... No use of actual fucking classnames.
When I pointed this out, he told me it was actually the better way of doing things because classnames increase the size of the HTML document!
He also claimed proudly that nth-child() is more efficient in performance (idk - anybody can confirm this?)
I'm the only "css guy" there so nobody could second my views. Posting it here so that I can show this to him tomorrow by demonstrating what opinion other css devs have on this and prove my concerns / convince him to change his code.7 -
A request:
"Hello, John! How are you today? Listen, if you have 15 minutes today - could you please do something for me? I need you to compare the results of test runs 1111 and 2222. Thank you!"
- How normal people read it:
* reads every word*
a grammar nazi takes a few minutes to look up whether the dash was the right symbol to use in this context.
appreciates the politeness
appreciates the personal touch (John, How are you)
- How a programmer reads it
".*compare\s.*(test|run).*\s(\\d{2,}).*\s(\\d{2,})\s*.*"
I would post this post as a joke/meme if it were one. Unfortunately, this is usually the case and devs, like regexes, sometimes tend to miss some important detail in the .* part.4 -

Now my client does not want to rely on Amazon S3 because of the One Outage that it ever had a couple what weeks ago I forgot already. So my dumbass blurts out well we could always just back up to some other image or file storing website. But now I'm expected to implement this right away when I really haven't thought about it at all I mean I would have to write some sort of failover and some sort of daily or syncing mechanism. I guess I should forget about any direct upload to S3 code that I have written. Really I guess I have to wrap all of the image and file handling stuff with my own solution. Which actually that will be very nice when it is done and I could use this on other projects but it's quite a lot of work for something that I don't feel we really need at this stage in development. Just because you're using stuff on production that has am enormous red TEST label in the way of the ui doesn't mean i can code bullet proof software any faster4

one of my guys decided to start learning c++ for the fun and fuck of it. We do not use c++ for shit (we web developers in this bitch) and he asked me if in the event of him getting completely fucking stuck he could come to me for guidance, I said sure. I do use c++ for personal game projects....it is mostly very bad C until I need c++, it is horrible seriously, I ain't no expert.
He decides to go with the LLVM. Creates a simple hello world app. Runs clang++ main.cpp -o main.
**QUICK PAUSE**
Done, the CLI returns the prompt back to him. He comes and asks me wtf is going on. I check on my machine(Linux based) and do the exact same thing. Executable comes out.
I check back on his windows machine, try typing the same shit. Nada. It does not throw errors or warnings, and the syntax is fucking fine, can't really fuck up c-outing hello fucking world. FUCKING NADA
I couldn't sit down to troubleshoot since it was still working hours, but this shit is haunting me and I am going ballsack crazy knowing that I won't be able to jump at it until tomorrow.

You know, I am astonished at the number of people here that use(d) Facebook. It's even more amazing that these same people are actually surprised that all this shit happened with their data.
I don't have a Facebook account, or Instagram, or Twitter, etc. When this stuff first started coming out, people kept telling me to sign up for accounts.
I refused, telling them that I didn't want to give my private information to a third party that I didn't even know. And not only that, but they can use the private information about you in any way they wish and also sell it to third parties.
I was of course told to take off my tinfoil hat... and it's only now that people are realizing that they are giving away potentially private information to people they don't know?
If I came to your door and asked you everyday to send everything you did that day to me so that I could file it away and use it as I please, you would probably tell me to get the hell off your property.
It just blows me away that if you put that same offer in the format of a website, suddenly people are begging to give you their data.
It's fucking lunacy... 😞3 -
So once in school, I went to my CS lab to find my friend cursing under his breath. On asking him, he tells me that he can't figure out how to print his code in BlueJ(our school requires us to use BlueJ). So I told him to download another IDE and use that instead. He had a look of bewilderment in his eyes and asked me what an IDE is. He was absolutely shocked to learn that you could write Java programs elsewhere.

Can't get over how many big companies get away with poor/no documentation for their own APIs. The past week i have been working with a large insurance company that only via email threads explained what endpoint to send files to and what username I could use to get this to work.
I also worked with a major courier service last month that only had a two page document for all their methods and one of the pages was explaining the transportation of data via imagery haha.1 -

"Sure, here: ..."
"Thanks - maybe we could add it to the docs, that's the first place I looked."

Seeing all the posts ranting about Ubuntu, I'm starting to wondering : I have a laptop on Ubuntu that I set for my courses at school, I took Ubuntu because I could try at school with VMs, liked it and because between this and Linux Mint, I wasn't aware of all those distributions.
So my reflexion is : Since I've started my internship, which would be the final semester (I'm in last year of studying), I use this computer mostly for personal coding projects, which aren't ambitious and I sometimes use my Windows too, so my computer is a kind of switch-not-so-often.
Should I keep it to Ubuntu or should I try to install something else ?
I've heard of Solus, which got my curiosity, and Arch Linux, but this one is not want I think I need. But seeing all those distributions here made me confuse, I dunno if I should upgrade something that's a kind of placeholder for coding and do stuff when the Windows (which is my main laptop) is busy doing things.
Have any suggestions ?21 -
WRITING CODE ON PAPER...smh
I know many people wrote about this already, but writing code on paper is one of the worst things of a CS class. I’d rather get a computer with no internet access and use a notes app to write code instead of having to write everything by hand. It takes so much more time that you could spend thinking about the problem. Not only that but also my hand gets tired of writing...ughhhh
I need to convince my teacher and the school to switch to writing code on computers! I will not loose this battle ahah8 -
Just gonna lay this out. It is 2023. If you are still using Twitter and Facebook for personal presence you are kinda stupid (as in using your real name). They are shit sites and they can and will use that information against you. Personally I would lump LinkedIn with them, but it is still mainly business use. Twitter and Facebook are useful for business, but a huge liability for personal use. Keep up with your relatives somewhere else. Same goes for reddit, but most people there use anonymous handles anyway. So probably a bit safer.
Personally I never understood twitter. Facebook was interesting, but I started running into strange fucks on Facebook. People who were basically amoral and were okay with killing people. They were "friends" of friends. I also saw how this information could be held against someone with their political views. So I dropped Facebook more than 10 years ago. It has only gotten worse. About 2 years ago a friend of ours relative was going on vacation to Mexico. So someone called our friend in the USA and pretended the relative was kidnapped and tried to extort money. They got all of this info on the vacation off Facebook/Twitter. The same thing can happen with jobs. Wrong political views and you won't get hired. This is what I mean by being dangerous to you. People are assholes.5 -
Having a possible new client come in our office and they wanted to see our system. I ask the sales guy what he thin kthey wanted to see.
Day before:
Sales: They do a lot of projects, so if we could show them our rollout system that would be great.
Me: We don't have one....
Needless to say I was up all night and it still turned out as an amazing feature that we use to this day.2 -
# Honestly, no intention of starting a holy war;
Been a Linux guy for over 9 years spanning school, college and my previous job years;
Now I have to use Windows at my new job. I know very little abt this os and it has never been among my strong skills (only used it for gaming);
What's more intriguing is that my current company's entire infrastructure is Windows based - which I had no idea that it could be possible at such a large scale;
I don't know about what I feel about this whole thing. But what I know is that I don't wanna shy away from it. I love the job and the role (only just if it was Linux, it'd be perfect).
Just need this for a future reflection:
Can anyone confirm if it's the same with other investment banks/financial services institutions etc. infrastructure?10 -
Everyone talking about Docker as the next big step in productivity. I still miss why Docker is so useful, to be honest, I see it as a "micro-vm " running your own software.
I have used this technology before but I really struggle to see where I could apply it usefully.
At this point, I'm thinking I'm just too naive about the issues it solves. So lemme go straight to the point:
1. How does Docker speed up your productivity?
2. How do you use it?17 -
FUCKING HELL.
It's already enough that this FUCKING API I have to work with is a mess of JSON and XML responses mixed together.
With mixed german and english keys and attributes all sprinkled over it.
And API access locked to Austria only for some reason.
And then they even manage to fuck up the little bit of JSON they use.
It's just a fucking array of strings (where one could easily use integers).
They can stick this fucking steaming pile of shit that they call API up their PHP infested assholes.
I hate web development sometimes.5 -
While it's totally not without its valid use cases, I fucking hate pair programming.
Well, let me elaborate. I hate *remote* pair programming. It completely disrupts my flow and wastes so much time with additional water cooler nonsense, and pedantic argument for the sake of participation. Not to mention "oh hey let me see how you did this... Oh, you know what, I think it would be better to do it this way...". Ok, great, we weren't even discussing that, but sure, let's completely detail this session to refactor something that could have come up at a good transition point, like I dunno, say a code review?
Like I said, there are very good reasons to pair program, but I would much prefer rubber ducking wherever possible.2 -
So, this was about 6 years ago, I had a small HDD of only 80 gigs dedicated for projects code, models, textures etc.
I didn't use GitHub or anything as a backup.
One morning when I turned my pc on I could hear a metal on metal-ish sound, no idea what it was, when windows finally booted ... And I wanted to start coding again, the 80 gig HDD was unformated like brand new ...
Few hours later I gave up and opened the HDD, the arm fucked up the disk inside ... Rip
I started backing up my shit ever since -
Context: We have a 96-port wall-mount patch panel. We're not even using half of those ports. "We" (read: "I") are completely redoing our network rack, as it's an ancient nest of wires. Currently all the ports in use on the patch panel just have random-length cables which are just drooped down beside the rack before running to switches. When I need to trace a cable from patch panel to switch, it's a complete nightmare. However, the cables going to the patch panel do have enough of extra length to do a rack-mount patch panel. I suggest this...
MGR: "Ehhh... I don't really like the idea of tying the rack to the wall... What if we want to move it or something?"
(this rack is in a tiny room and has been there since probably the 1800's.)
ME: "Well the problem currently is that it's all but impossible to trace cables. And even if I rewire it and bundle them nicely, it will still be a headache. With a rack-mount panel, we could just have super short patch cables and so it's super easy when I need to move stuff around."
MGR: "Okkkk..... So what if we would purchase like 3 or 4 switches to get 96 ports, then we run a cable to every patch panel port. That way we never need to change anything :)))."
Dude. Great idea. Let's drop hundreds to thousands of dollars on switches we don't need, rather than just doing a single patch panel. Brilliant. Also another great idea that, running thirty or forty unnecessary cables that we aren't even using. That won't clutter up the rack or use up valuable space or get confusing which ports on the switches are/aren't in use.
I'm trying so hard not to scream right now. I can't deal with this.
EDIT: It gets worse. Apparently part of the reason he wants to do this is "to make it simple". Currently we have our POS system running to its own switch, the printers are on another switch, etc. (yes I know some of this could be accomplished with a VLAN, this was set up before my time). But apparently "if we just had every single port wired then we could plug in whatever we want wherever we want and it wouldn't matter." I just... That's... That's not how you do a network.1 -
Sometimes I start writing a sentence that ends with parentheses (only to realize what I put in the parentheses is as important as the rest, then I could use a regular comma instead).
I call this "grammatical tail-call recursion".2 -
OMG. This weekend, there is Rainbow Six Siege free to play on Steam. I have a desktop PC, but I can't get it to work. Tried Ubi support, but they give shit. So...I was hoping, I could finally try this crap game on my laptop. And here we go...
Normally, I use Linux. Only Linux, because Windows 10 on my laptop is extremely fucking painful. I knew it's going to be torture to install that game on it, but whatever.
OK, firstly, I was surprised, that Windows booted in just about 1 minute. I was like wtf just happened. Everything seemed to be fine and working. I downloaded uPlay, installed it and tried to install the game. Just to be clear, this rant is written from Linux again. And why?
Because FUCKING WINBLOWS desides to FUCKING UPDATE WIFI DRIVERS. 1 minute - internet works, second fucking minute - WIFI IS FUCKING DOWN. Thanks fucking pussy Gates. I really like you. And use this crap daily. Holy shit I would die...2 -
So I finally decided to switch to Linux.
And I need help choosing distro.
I know this is not a good place to ask this, I could just use google. But I want to hear it from you guys, from actual devs whose work with it every day, and not from some ***** bloggers whose barely know what is OS.
So please just write which distro you are using and if you are happy with it. I will be very thankful.36 -
I remember when doing some privacy cleanup, looking at the third-party list of a website and visiting the sites behind them. I ended up one time on Crazy Egg.
3 months later, I got an email if I wouldn't want to use their services.
They did have my email.
From where? (the answer is obviously from the sites they track)
But I mean, who cares about your email when they have your f****** passport
-->
https://medium.freecodecamp.org/pri...
This world is getting to crazy, I thought this would be the maximum. Of course...
Next headline:

I think tracking is a more serious problem, than I imagined (and I do already try to reduce data)
Oh yeah and btw I just noticed an iOS app could silently use my mobile data (was deactivated for the app) to display ads. Silently. I hope this was a bug. But I don't think so. -
Officially faster bruteforcing:
https://pastebin.com/uBFwkwTj
Provided toy values for others to try. Haven't tested if it works with cryptographic secure prime pairs (gcf(p, q) == 1)
It's a 50% reduction in time to bruteforce a semiprime. But I also have some inroads to a/30.
It's not "broke prime factorization for good!" levels of fast, but its still pretty nifty.
Could use decimal support with higher precision so I don't cause massive overflows on larger numbers, but this is just a demonstration after all.13 -
Open source is poison, hoax and source of much troubles.
Even as I love OSS, and I use it a lot, when things go south, they go south terribly.
There was "security" updates in one OSS program I have been using, that accidentally prevented use cases which specifically affected me. I raised bug report, made issue and gave small repro for it.
One of the core developers acknowledges that yes, this is problem, and could be handled with few added options, which users of similar use case could use to keep things working. He then tags issue "needs help" and disappears.
After I have waited some time, I ask help how I could fix it myself, like how to setup proper dev environment for that tool. Asked it in their forums few days later, as issue didn't get any response. Then asked help in their slack, as forums didn't get any help.
Figured out how to get dev environment up, fix done (~4 lines changed, adding simple check for option enabled or not) and figured out how to test that this works.
I create pull request to project, checking their CONTRIBUTING and following instructions there. Then I wait. I wait two weeks, and then one of the core develors goes to add label "needs response from maintainer". That is now almost two weeks ago...
So, bug that appeared in October, and issue that was created October 8th, is still not fixed, even as there is fix in PR for 28 days this far.
And what really ticks me off? People who make statements like: "it is OSS, have you thought of contributing and fixing things yourself?" when we run into problems with open source software.
Making fix yourself ain't biggest problem... but getting it actually applied seems to be biggest roadblock. This kind of experiences doesn't really encourage me to spend time fixing bugs in OSS, time is often better spend changing to different tool, or making changes in my own workflow or going around problem some kludge way.
I try to get business starting, and based on OSS tools. But my decision is staggering, as I had also made decision to contribute back to OSS... but first experiences ain't that encouraging.
Currently, OSS feels like cancer.17 -
So this Just happened, we were in a Meeting when Manager Tells us about "Time Management" and asked us Whatsapp we could Code for him,
I suggested that we use those Chips to track us and the employees, because we always use them to unlock Doors and Stuff,
Another Suggestion from another Person was:
To use Paper...
I was Like "WTF dude Pen and Paper? Didn't you listen?"
We now use Pen and Paper to weite our working Times Down...1 -
They’re making us use netbeans for class. Like I have a whole lab on learning how to use it. I’m not going to class, I finished the lab in 2 minutes. This one particular class is so dumb, we’ve had labs on ms word, PowerPoint, excel... they could have just done an optional workshop for people who don’t know how to use them. Waste of 2 hours every Thursday. And the teachers a dickhead7

Who the FUCK thought "let's completely redesign the Doodle mobile app and make it as unusable as possible!"?
The app RESETS every selected option EVERY time you switch to another app and back. Like yea, you don't need to use the calendar app to check at what dates you're available.
Fucking morons! What. a. shit. piece. of. software. How can any PM approve of this? I bet even ChatGPT could do a better job. Fucking hell. "Let's save money with developing hybrid apps! We have no clue how to do it right but: we spend less money, yay!" Fuck. You.
(First rant. Don't know if I did this right but I had to let this out.)2 -
So last time, when HR asked for a meeting I thought they knew who'll be leaving with me. But there is only rumors saying "CTO is poaching inside his team".
And I also learned from the a paralegal, who talk too much, that they just want to fuck with me.
So new course of action: how can I fuck with them? All week end thinking about it. And today, a big competitor, offered me the VP Engineering!!!
So I'll try to make them use their Non-Competition clause.
In France you can set a couple of main competitors and the employee can't work for them for a couple of years. And you have to pay the employee the full salary he could earn during that time (two years of salary). As the employee, you have to disclose this information (you want to sign with the competitor) with your current company and they have a couple of week to decide if they want to use the clause.
So I'm starting to see how I can scare them enough to make them use this clause.
I know it's not cool, but I enjoy so much fucking with them!!!10 -
Most awkward video meeting?
Can a conference call count? This happened several years ago.
Diving into international markets that could potentially make us millions of $$ (no pressure), while the phone was ringing the CEO's number (in Norway), my manager leans over and whispers
DevMgr: "This project will be managed using *proper* software development methodologies, none of this agile shit you want to use."
<CEO picks up>
I had already been in talks with their dev team to get a feel for their tech stack and we had discussed project milestones, potential release cycles (laying the ground work for using agile methodologies) before getting upper mgmt involved.
The partner dev team was listening and kept throwing out agile buzzwords and I could tell my manager was getting pissed. He would blurt out "Those specifications will need to be fully documented before PaperTrail writes one line of code!". No one said anything, but I could tell the other mgrs/VPs in the room were uncomfortable with the hostility towards discussing features.9 -
I implemented the equivalent of “?.” In typescript with a function callled safeRetrieve(descend into the field only if the object is not null).
We could not update typescript, so I just created this function and it made me used to use ‘keyof T’ as a parameter type… I still feel very satisfied after I use this approach with anything because it really feels like using typescript correctly!4 -
do know that feeling when your dreaming of just getting away for some days? I could use some of your help to get away.
In europe there is this long distance ridesharing app called www.blablacar.com but it only allows you to search for destinations you know. So I'd love to know to where there is a rideshare on that given day from my hometown.

Could someone please write me a small quick and dirty piece of software / script or webapp that let me query and list that?

I always had this mentality that I shouldn’t rely on a certain library or framework for my entire project because what if one day they stop supporting it. (Yeah I’m talking to u vuetify) That’s why I came up with this code structure that for everything that I wanna do I have a ‘driver’ library all coded by myself that interacts with that third party framework or library so if they stop supporting it I could just change a couple of lines of code in my driver file and my codebase should be working again. But I feel like this ‘driver’ approach is not the most efficient way of going in terms of memory usage. Do you guys think I should keep it simple and directly use those libraries or this is actually not a bad approach.7

Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)
In retrospective not a big deal, but it made me really happy for the rest of the day when I saw that address in pmap :)1 -
Hi developers.... so i just feel like posting this post
I'm a self-taught developer its been 6 years now and i managed to get myself a job this year at a tech startup and they actually developed this developer department just for me..... with the promise that if i manage to get this department up and running I'll get a higher position as the company grows
So it's been 4 months now and i think i'm doing exceptionally well as a developer since I'm the only developer in that organization..... and some how I feel like if i use my problem solving skills to work on other real world problems not just code and designing systems..... like bringing solutions to real none code related problems i could actually achieve more and make a big difference
but I'm actually learning a lot and hope i'll become more and do more within this organization and grab that top position role3 -
Spent hours synthesizing few novel ideas on Notepad, and then did Ctrl-A, Ctrl-X so I could just paste it in my private blog. The blog wouldn't respond, ssh'd into the server to troubleshoot, and then realized my habitual use of Ctrl-C destroyed that very content I spent hours on. Only realized this after I got the blog back up running again. X-( I should start getting into habit of using VSCode or Gvim more.8

I don't think it could be more .net core than this: Several parts of the application ended up failing because of a too long URL. For example we used a List to store selected items in an array and they each looked like this:
&model.selectedIds[n]=true
The server side made more sense but we were running late with the project so we just went with it and hoped no one would use this feature. -
I could use some advice. Immagine this: you recently started a new job where the people are great, the product is pretty cool and pay is good. But the code you have to work with is the biggest pile of shite you've ever seen and your manager does not want to change any of this, even after you suggest you would build something that would be a thousand times better, not only "code wise" but for the users too. What would you do?9

Ffs, idiot comes to my PR, that didn’t have anything to do with him (he’s not even part of the team) trying to lecture me without bothering to understand the changes and the context.
I wish I could have replied “next time, I’d recommend you to take your head out of your ass first, and read the goddamn code. It will be a better use of your time than writing this nonsense.”4 -
longer rant, with curious question at the end;
my sister asked me lately how she can change the way her phone creates the name of pictures she takes (the naming scheme), as she didn't want the name to be composed of date and time (and so on) the picture was taken, cause she had to send it to her boss
after i replied that i don't know how this could be changed and that the naming scheme would have a purpose, she got angry at me because i wouldn't help her and that i should fuckin tell where it can be changed!😡
after i repeated my answer she said "what are you studying cs for?? YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS!!!😡😤"
i got furious, you guys can probably imagine as IT guy/dev 😠😠😠, given stereotypes/prejudices etc., unfortunately i'm not the guy who is good at freaking out and yelling at people, but GODDAMN IF I COULD TELL HER WHAT STUDYING THE DEGREE IS REALLY ABOUT! I'M SO FED UP WITH THIS!😤😤😤
i'm not supposed to know how her FUCKIN HONOR PHONE WORKS
WHICH I DON'T EVEN USE and never even thought about changing the naming scheme.
JUST RENAME IT AFTERWARDS!
of course her phone is so complicated that she doesn't even know how to rename the file, as she only knows how to use the google photos app (which doesn't support that?🤔) and never even considered to use the file manager ... well can't blame her for that, android isn't as simple as windows when it comes to this🤷
... in the end she just sent it, as is😪.
oh and by the way, is it actually possible?🤔14 -
so if i get this correctly :
1. mongodb( community server) is going to create some files in my system which will be called "databases/collections/document bullshit via its own special process called mongod (similar to mysql , but ok)
2. my python flask app is going to connect to it via its official driver pymongo (which could be used directly)
3. mongoengine is a library (more of a wrapper on pymongo) providing "easy ways for connecting mongodb via pymongo" (which again could be used directly)
4. flask-mongoengine is library (more of a wrapper on mongoengine providing "easy ways for connecting mongodb via mongoengine via pymongo" (which again could be used directly)
5. flask-pymongo is some another bullshit library/wrapper that took away 6hours of mine which again is "A FUCKING WRAPPER PROVIDING EASY WAYS FOR CONNECTING TO MONGODB VIA PYMONGO"
seriously, fuck web development. Why can't the original driver (i.e pymongo from mongodb devs) could have simpler wrappers? and why does my fucking tutorial instructor had to use the most fucking rarely used flask-mongoengine (which i accidently read as flask-pymongo and got f**ked) to teach newbies? fucking day wasted trying to understand this crap.
I don't like monnopolies, but its somewhat good that the mobile environment is still in the hands of nononsense players like google and oracle(java) . atleast we don't have people releasing wrapper over wrapper over wrapper and then fighting about which wrapper is better to use.
Like , even when devs started cmplaining that android dbs are too difficult to understand, google themselves created an actively supported wrapper that shutted down the fight over which wrapper to use(sqldelight, realm, sql bright etc)5 -
Classmate: I'm done with this
I read his code
Me: Good. But could you make that a little bit more.. readable?
Classmate: Eh..what?
Me: Or use one or two lists less.. and the naming
Classmate: But I need them all!
It's a square around a coordinate within given borders, not rocket science.1 -
Anybody use Toggl?
I would frown on this in a business environment as far too intrusive... but for a freelancer I wonder if it could help me track my tasks/use/hours more easily.
Because that is one part of freelance that sucks.3 -
Today in Windows Clang misadventures from one past wtf
I have 0 fucking clue what is happening, so I am starting to think that this is a windows 11 only bug.
If I (say for example) compile all of my headers into a .dll and then link them to my executable program, an executable will be generated.
If I use the dll to be linked into my executable, but DON'T use any of the code inside, then no executable is generated.
I need to at least use something from within the headers that I create into the main program for it to build and actually throw out an executable.
I could argue that doing this would be the proper way to setup a project in some scenarios, managing your headers and what not.
The only bad part is that it essentially removes the ability for newcomers to just install clang and hello the fucking world into existence.
Mind you, using the Mingw installation is possible still. I-just-don't-fuckig-understand-why-the-fucking-official-build WORKS
THIS is why people are trying to jump into other languages. My dude's shit is solved, but this fucking infuriates me. ANd go on, try googling "clang not building executable" and see how this shit is nowhere to be fucking found sdfksakjdfa3 -
Am I the only one that can't stand non-maximized windows on Windows but hate maximized windows on Mac?
Could this be a psychological phenomenon in which the designs of these systems make you use them in a specific way? Or am I just retarded?
Anyone else does the same?8 -
Started a new contract:
Dev: "here, take this draft document containing a rough explanation of the requirements and write this service that exchange messages with these two subsystems"
Me 😐"ok"
-- couple weeks later --
Dev: "oh btw, you should go through ALL the fields in those messages described in the 'documentation' and double check them because we use millimeters and they use meters, we measure milliseconds and they use seconds. You should handle conversions when you deal with those messages"
Me (in my mind): "fucking son of a bitch! Why didn't you tell me this little piece of information at the beginning so I could have accounted for that instead of bloating the code now with your spaghetti style, full of horrible hacks, ifs and workarounds?
Me 😐: "sure, I will"
(don't worry, in the end I managed to find a clean solution for that 😉) -
So i've just learned C# and started learning how to use it in unity. And one of my friends asked me if I could help him with an error he couldn't understand, and I said sure (Why didn't he search up what the error meant?). I look at the syntax. This is ruby code, come on man I said i know about C# I don't know anything about ruby man.6

(Repost: Broken Link)
Announcing Covey (v0.1)!
A lightweight (or at least that's the goal) Linux cluster orchestration/management system.
https://github.com/chabad360/covey
Why?
Because there are no systems with a (web) GUI (that I could find) that can run on a Raspberry Pi or similar.
This doesn't have a GUI!
It's coming in the next week or so (hopefully).
The codebase is shit!
I know, I'm actively refactoring it (feel free to send a PR).
What is it written in?
Go, with Postgres as the database.
Can I use it?
Go ahead and try, it's currently more in the MVP stage then at the stage where I recommend you use it.
Do you know what you're doing?
Maybe... This is my first big project in Go, and the first time I've ever used SQL. So I'm learning as I go along.9 -
Great... I was hired to make a store system for this newborn startup... which isn't very tough, given I know PHP. Now they want me to build a social media for designers, just like Instagram, to encourage them to share their designs in an attempt to increase sales. And I'm the only Dev in the startup of ten.
Well, initially, I was not very pleased, but as I researched on how would I even do that, I realised it would really help my skill set, not to mention the points I'll be able to add to be resumé.
So far I've looked up how I'll have to use JSON/XML, coupled with PHP. I chose to learn Angular.JS for frontend dynamicity.
Any advice/help for this novice? Or any better frameworks I could use? (Don't say ruby-our web hosting site does not support it.)2 -
I just can't get my head around it. How could a "language" like cmake become so widely used and popular? Let alone be the horrible syntax or the documentation which is an insult to anyone who is trying to read it.
I mean seriously??: " function_xyz( PARAM1 PARAM2 PARAM3) : for this use case A pass the keyword A and the words X Y Z, for use case B pass the keyword B and the words A B C you can also add the keyword D simply to increase the number of possible behaviours this stupid function can have."
But yeah i get it, it's free its cross platform and so on.
But how can after version 10000000.1, after adding dozens of "macros or functions" the most simplest and straight forward use case without any fucking thirdparties be so fucking difficult to implement.
And why are there for any use case 50 different ways of doing it? instead of one simple way?
Really, I just don't get it.4 -
Some older woman in my building tried to cyberbully me. She found a back door because the building’s online message board emails everyone in the building and those emails have a link to email the author.
You bet I snitched on her to building management after she continued to email me after I had asked her to stop and told her that her email was offensive. I don’t tolerate people who make assumptions about my ethnicity and use that as a reason to send me demeaning messages.
And you bet I contacted the developers of the building’s message board about the backdoor. And of course they implied that I could have prevented this and sent me instructions. No, I could not have prevented this and those instructions they sent me would have never applied to my comment on the message board.6 -

Ranters, I would like your suggestion:
I have an early 2011 13" macbook pro with 4gb ram, 320gb hdd and <400 battery cicles, which I use mostly for web dev. I started to get some annoying slow downs since last osx update, and now I am trying to figure out what to do.
I could buy an SSD hd and a new set of 16gb ram (8gb x2) and replace the internals. This would increase the performance greatly.
Or I could sell it and buy a new Retina version (with 8gb ram and 128gb ssd), at the expense of not being able to update the ram or the hard drive in the future.
It is a ~$200 option against a $1200 one. What would you do if you were in my situation?11 -
This morning me and my colleague had huge debate about using GraphQL or REST. While I was in total favour of GraphQL, that guy was more on REST side because he read some random articles on dev.to and medium and was highly motivated to use REST instead of GraphQL.
The problem is, some people write anything on blogging websites without even doing a proper research.
Since, I have worked on GraphQL, I knew it's pros and cons very clearly and what are the things that can be done to solve them.
The guys said that we can't do native caching in GraphQL at which the lava from my head just got burst out.
I showed him the official GraphQL docs where it was clearly mentioned that we can do caching in GraphQL.
Poor guy couldn't say anything after that.
P.s: We are still going to use old school REST APIs but I am happy that I could prove my point. I'll use GraphQL in my side projects anyway, loss for him if he's not exploring something new.7 -
I recently got a job interview and i am finally working as a junior consultant!
The most exciting thing is the fact that I am still studying Informatic Engineering .
I have still a long road to walk since I am still on the second year of a three years course. But finally I feel that my knowledge is being appreciated and I can use that in order to help a company.
If any experts in this area could give me advice, I am going forward to read them. I am new to devRant too !4 -
I'm currently studying for my exams and I don't have much time left before the first one.
I have dual-boot on my laptop and I almost always use Linux, this morning I used it and while I was studying I updated the software in the background.
Then I powered off the laptop.
This afternoon I powered it on and it booted to grub shell. Just updating the system screwed everything.
FOR FUCK SAKE LINUX I FUCKING NEED TO STUDY.
I'm posting this rant here because I could not post it on r/linux subreddit, I'm sure my post would be deleted and this is sad. Those people who criticize Windows refuse to get criticized , refuse to see reality. Their beloved os is not so reliable after all.
I fucking need to study and what am I doing this afternoon? Fixing Linux shit of course4 -
love hate kinda deal with this. But I am creating a program in answer set programming that would help me analyze famous chess matches from legends such as B Fischer, Carlsen, etc in an effort to stop at one point and predict what could have happened differently in the match in order to make the other player win. I am adding limiters as to not propagate into every fucking solution in existence else the processing power required to solve this shit would be all too hardcore. I learned about this programming paradigm in one of my graduate level classes using a tech known as Clingo, which is similar to Prolog. I am doing it cuz I sucked at Clingo and because of my pride I aim to make this project a reality to properly say that I know how to use it.
current status: failing somewhat miserably4 -
Do you think it's possible to get enough of a following on YouTube and twitch to fund your living expenses and use the rest of your free time to work on your own studio projects?
For example I'm a VR and AR game developer. I do the whole shebang for game development and design on my own. I could stream play throughs of the current game I'm working on as a weekly thing and create tutorial videos for other developers and students for more content on my channel, but to also stimulate growth in the VR and AR industry. I'd in a way be creating my own market. I could also stream the development of the art assets and whatnot.
Could possibly make some money from the ads at first. Maybe even within the game?
Idk I'm trying to avoid having to get a job anywhere else if I can float my own success as an indie start up. So thoughts on this rant please?5 -
So ok, today was a crazy day.
New sprint, new ticket.
Work on the bug tickets first he said ….
Sure can. Oh had I just known that this very first innocent looking ticket is the way to coder‘s hell ….
‚Access of undefined‘ it said. Easy to fix, I thought.
Until I found the very same code twenty-fucking-two times over about 50 files!
Who would guess that exportSingleOperatorBooking, exportSeveralOperatorBookings, exportAllOperatorBookings (… and more) could in practically be the same? Nah, they all use different interfaces.
Oh wait, the alias type of the extended sub-interface of file misc.ts is the same logical content as a differently named interface below another different interface with the same content as in another ts file?
Wait that can‘t be. Riiiiight?? 😳
8h later I have barely scratched the surface of refactoring this shitshow of a project.
But no, I refuse to put the same error handling multiple times in different places.
I could have been done already. I could have saved my soul, my sanity. But I will be brave and strong to save the innocent developer that will cometh after me. For I shall be rewardeth for my sacrifice.
Amen.8 -
So, I am currently on Spring Break, and what do I do when I am on Spring Break: I take a moment to experiment with different languages. This time, I decided to check out Objective C since it mixes up two languages that I love dearly (but that I do not use outside of academic endeavors) which are C and Smalltalk.
Going around the net I found this https://github.com/Flying-Toast/...
Notice: I have nothing against Swift, I stopped developing apps for IOS back when Swift was in its infancy, so I was forced to use Objective C and tbh I never had an issue with it, I had learned it before through GNUStep, the language was obviously strange when I started learning it, but I did not hate it, I tried following Swift to see if I could use it at least in some portions, but at the time of its release it was still pretty much beta for me, so I passed. I feel it is much better now, but the issues with the language at this point in time I feel are more from the side of XCode which can either be just ok, good or an absolute piece of shit depending on the release. Either way, I found the link to be funny.2 -
"In Python 3, exec is a function; its use has no effect on the compiled bytecode of the function where it is used."
Found in a stackoverflow post.
So wait, you mean to say, you could hide code in a pyc file or am I mistaken?
How is this not a security concern?12 -
My little brother started college this year. He hasn't decided what he wants to do, so he took classes in finance and computer science. During finals week, he comes to me ranting about GitHub. "It has to be the most useless tool ever made", he said.
His teachers made him use it without any explanation on HOW to use it. His whole team was working out of a single branch, downloading the zip every time, and struggling to fix merge conflicts. At no point was this ever corrected. This has been going on for an entire year!!!
Safe to say, I spent the afternoon walking him through more productive ways to use GitHub and showing him why it's not "the most useless tool ever made". I don't get why teachers for students to use tools but fail to ever explain how. All that is going to do is deter kids from using tools that could save them when they get a real job.6 -
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?11

I made a big project on a personal web site. I send form to people to know the future community.
During one month, make it and a friend tell me :
'' For your big project you can use Laravel or symphony, that's be useful for you, but this is heavy to learn ''.
I tried 2 days and stop it...
This is so different... But that could be very cool to know it, I think...
I have a question for you :
Does I have to continue learn it? This is very important to know it?
Ps: I programm in php/pdo and mysql ans some js4 -
First time I touch anything related to a graphical interface. My mind went to:
"Shit, it looks so good I bet even my mom could use this!!!!" -
So I'm gonna be honest. I dont know git. I do plan on learning it but I'm waiting to learn how to use it. But I'm seeing all this stuff about it on here could someone explain what it is and its function?6

Freelancers!
How do you create your invoices?
I love toggl and want to build a service to automatically create and send invoices to my clients based on the times in toggl. Would this be of any use to you guys? Could do the same for other time keepers2 -
TL:DR: Unclear requirements led to a complete code rework
Background: We (2 friends, both already work as developers beside studying, and myself) are in a course about multi core programming for Java. We got an simple assignment which we were about to finish today.
An other friend of us is also in this course and asked if he could use some special method which is far above the taught material. He got a email with the following answer: "You are free to use any features of java 8 apart from lambdas and concurrents as we use them for our next assignment." He told us as he couldn't believe that we weren't allowed to use lambdas an we sat in front of our codebase and the only thing we could think of was "fuck".
Our entire code base was filled with lambda expressions as the requirement paper didn't mention any restrictions apart from using java 8.
FUCKING FUCKTARDS GET YOUR REQUIREMENTS RIGHT AND SAY WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE.
And here I am, sitting in front of intellij and merging my lambda filled fixing branch with our now lambda free working branch.2 -
SO , i just ran into this database called ArangoDB and it claims to single handedly beat Mongo,Neo4j,Postgres and claims to be capable of handling any use case you can throw at it.
If anyone could verify this claim , such an ideal database just makes me question it's existence.5 -
Hey so this just came up and i have no idea how could i ddg this so ill just ask here.
I know you can use namespace{} in typescript but is there something similar in js (es6)? We are making a game and the variable names are getting scarce so it would be nice if we could like menu.offset or something. I know static variables in classes are a thing but im asking about namespace-y stuff here.3 -
I don't know if my boss just wants me to learn how to use a new internal deployment process or just likes giving me unnecessary low-value work to take up time...
I could and have just copied the program via SFTP and unzip it to set it up....
(This is a testing and does not need to be in production...)
I have better things I could be doing and just want to get this done and closed but ... -
~ I knew a little bit of Django ~
~ Now I know a little bit more ~
~ I used to like Python ~
~ Not so anymore ~
~ Why though ~
~ I don’t know ~
I use JS professionally and I have majorly coded in JS in personal projects but I always had this liking towards Python. Now, that feeling is gone. Python doesn’t seem that attractive. JS seems better.
One of the reasons, I feel, is the syntax. JS can fuck-up in places but that C-style syntax is love.
Another reason could be that I still don’t know that much Python or Django to make an opinion? Maybe. Probably.9 -
So I have been using IntelliJ for two weeks now. Still failing to see how this is superior to Eclipse. It has crashed or locked up multiple times, makes dependency management needlessly complicated and the UI just plain doesn’t make sense. I don’t see anything here that makes this software worth $60 per month when my free software does everything yours does, but better.
Everyone on my team who is being forced to use it hates it and the money our company is paying for it could be used for better things like toilet paper with more than one ply.4 -
I got to thinking it might be nice to have my own personal fingerprint reader. I could carry it with me and hook to my work computer for tasks such as sudo and login. At home I could login. I figured there ought to be some nice cross platform devices... Oh hell fuck no. Its all Windows shit. Most of them say windows 10 and usually say don't work on Linux, Mac, or Android.
So I think I am going to hack my own:
https://amazon.com/FlashTree-Optica...=
https://amazon.com/Seeeduino-Smalle...==
I have a 3d printer that I can use to enclose this and make it look nice and personalized. I can embed any kind of functionality I want to make this work.
Manufacturers: STOP MAKING SHITTY WINDOWS ONLY HARDWARE!7 -
TIL python list variable asignment points to the original instance
I know this isn't reddit but today I noticed that in python when you asign a list variable to another variable in python, any change to the new variable affects the original one. To copy one you could asign a slice or use methods returning the list:
l = [1,2,3,4]
l2 = l
l2.append(5)
print(l)
#Outputs [1,2,3,4,5]
l3 = list(l2) # also works with l2[:]
l3.append(6)
print("l2 = ", l2, "\nl3 = ", l3)
#Outputs l2 = [1,2,3,4,5]
# l3 = [1,2,3,4,5,6]
I wonder how the fuck I haven't encountered any bug when using lists while doing this. I guess I'm lucky I haven't used lists that way (which is strange, I know). I guess I still have a long way to go.5 -
So this semester we're being taught C/C++ which now seems to me like a distant memory from high school days.
The professor decides to use visual studio for something as trivial as variables and pointers and as I went through the syllabus, it won't get any harder and will stick to this simple stuff.
As much as I find VS awesome, when there is a simpler approach available, why go the tougher way?
The same could easily be achieved from a ~15 compiler or even that 16bit compiler we used in our high school that couldn't even use mouse as an input. Am I over thinking this? .-.4 -
ok this may look like a lazy ass beginner crying out for spoon feeding( which it kinda is), but i want some real industrial training in non documented Android coding.
For last 2 years i have been reading tons of Android articles and documentation on "how to use this library", "how to add this feature", "what this function of this class does", but not much about how to use it efficiently, like the way its used in industry.
When I interned with a startup, all they wanted from me was to push new design changes, fix layout bugs and work as fastly as i could. I had no time to understand their core code, which had so many things that i could have learned : those mvp/mvvm design/architecture patterns, dependency injections, kotlin , coroutines, state management designs, data bindings, eventbuses and handling, and VIPER,RIBS (I mean, not everything was particularly in their code, i picked up a few keywords from here n there)... a lot of stuff that is used by many apps for their codebase.
I can read up these stuff by myself, but i always end up feeling bored coz frankly, i got no big/valuable project to implement it upon and feel excited about it. I feel that open source projects from OSS companies could be my window, but their chat spaces are also mostly empty to discuss/get some guidance.
I want some specific training about these. Can you guys provide any online/offline course/company training/books in this subject, the best practices?1 -
I finally managed to get my Wireguard setup to work in both ways! Beforehand I could ping from A to B, but not the other way around.
A network 10.1.0.0/16
B network 10.2.0.0/16
(both actually use multiple /24 subnets, but I reserve a /16 for each site for the sake of simplicity)
Lots of fiddling later this is my configuration:
A interface 10.1.199.1/32
A allowedIPs 10.2.0.0/16
B interface 10.2.199.1/32
B allowed IPs 10.1.0.0/16
ping from 10.1.1.1 to 10.2.1.1 => 172ms
ping from 10.2.1.1 to 10.1.1.1 => 172ms
it works, yay! now to add more sites...2 -
Announcing Covey (v0.1)!
A lightweight (or at least that's the goal) Linux cluster orchestration/management system.
https://github.com/chaabd360/covey
So I'm learning as I go along.8 -
During my readings of Nim I found a technique known as stropping.
This gives devs the ability to use keywords as identifiers.
Example:
var `var` = "fucking why?"
echo(`var`)
Can anyone tell me WHY would someone subject themselves to such confusion notion? Mind you Nim has large features for macro programming and the creation of dsls, i have not gotten far enough to assess this, but what other use could you highly knowledgeable lads and lasses think of?22 -
I'm currently in a bit of a predicament.
Here's the deal:
I want to separate my back-end from my front-end code a bit more (currently PHP code is mixed up with all the HTML, Javascript etc.. basically: front-end and back-end are one).
The question here is: how should I go about this?
In my current project, I have written some javascript code with jQuery that checks whether the user is logged in or not (checks for an auth token and UID to be present in the cookies).
However, this results in the page (in this case a dashboard that only logged in users should see) being visible for a moment before the user is redirected to the login page...
How could I go better about this (No, I won't use AngularJS for this)?7 -
min-height: calc(100% - 1rem)
AAAAA REEEEEEEEE WHAT ARE YOU DOINGGGGGGGGGGG IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND CSS DONT USE ITTTTTTTTTTT
so much pain / time could be saved if devs just used a damn framework (i don't care, bootstrap or tailwind, have at it which is better, i could care less). stop trying to be fancy, like this above, because its ultimately wrong. sorry i'm not sorry7 -
The frontend developers in my company are the reason why I have anxiety. Here are few things that grinds my knees:
1) for a long time in projects, they deleted the auth token from their storage without integrating the logout api. They thought why use an API for that. :)
2) most of them had no clue that form fields could accept javascript as inputs and work as XSS vulnerabilities. This actually happened with a client, he got so fucking pissed.
3) One of them asked me to convert a PATCH request to DELETE cos fuck REST and HTTP methods.
For fuck’s sake. I need to get out of this place.4 -
Idk why but this morning I was thinking about this high school elective class where we learned Adobe flash. But specifically 2 instances where I ignored the teacher and did my own thing
1. We were using Sprite sheets and he had us use photoshop to cut out the Sprite to a different layer and manually save each Sprite one by one to disk to use in flash. Some sheets had 50 fucking sprites
So I found a script for Adobe (action script I think they called their Javascript derivative) that exported every layer for me without all the manual clicking. There is probably an even better way. But this worked for how lazy I was back then
2. Our final projects we could do anything but he suggested not doing anything too complicated cause of time constraints and he barely taught is the scrptinh language for Adobe flash so making flash games was almost out of the question.
Me being stupid really wanted to make a working pong game. So I spent too long watching a German (i dont know German) tutorial video I found, and troubleshooting outdated code from that video. And improving things where I could with my limited knowledge made worse cause I wasn't interested in programming and didn't start learning python until the following year
Yeah don't know why I was thinking about those. But I feel it's a good perspective on how far I've come. From hacking together a pong clone with no skills, to being hired to automate and optimize processes and legacy projects -
The recent USB C/ no headphone-jack rant inspired me a bit and I noticed that two USB C ports might be a solution for me in regards to the headphone debate.
I'd still need a dongle for my headphones, but I can still charge.
Maybe I could get a audiophile grade dongle make myself def, that be great.
It would also be kind of useful for other stuff, you can't have enough usb ports on any device.
And then I started looking into that topic.
WTF one plus! Why did you make my op 3T USB 2.0 in type C !!!????
I'm not that stupid though. I know there are reasons, but this just upsets me, 3.0 at least please!
What is missing for you that you could use your phone instead of a PC for the most workloads of use-cases?
For me it's two high speed usb C ports with display connect capabilities + periferals.
I currently think that it would be a great thing to move most Noob users off their pcs onto their smartphones for that purpose.1 -
Our ISP asked if I was satisfied with their service. I told them that it's okay, but some of our computers don't have enough powerful network card, and they can't use the internet on maximum speed, and they said that they could see it, too. WTF? I knew that the ISP's router is not the most secure thing, but it has a remote mode, which if of course OFF, and they still can see this, and maybe even more. Monitoring your traffic is a thing, but a home network should be private...2
-
My worst default is laziness.
I live in the UE. And in 5 days I reported 15 GDPR breachs (most recruters), so i'm starting to check how could i automise this action so i can do it by a RESTAPI call, and create some kind of 'share' link so other people can report the same business for the same reason... All that only because filling the cnil form is a haslle...
I have a script to classify and auto respond to stupid/shitty questions...
I make short alias for every command i use more than 10 times....
Conclusion :
Being Lazy take A LOT OF WORK!1 -
Oh now that I'm remembering, this is how I learned PHP. It's not my specialty, but I'm writing a small plugin for WordPress.
I was in a dinner with my partner's family. One of their parent's siblings manages the IT in their company, and we had this conversation:
family member: So what language do you know?
Me: A bit of C and C++, and I did a project last year in Java/Kotlin. But my current project uses mostly Python.
Family Member: Oh Python? But Python is a very easy language, even I could learn pretty quickly. That's why we don't use it in my company. We use PHP.
Challenge accepted!
Within a week I was able to learn PHP and some basic templating library, and replicated most their company's website into a new server.5 -
Been a little inactive for a long time, but I could really use your advices fellow ranters.
I'm in my senior year of highschool and I got an extraordinary internship at a company (it's not possible to get a job in web dev in this country as a highschooler).
The pay is just a little pocket money, but projects are fun (web apps in js) and I can include this experience iny resume later on.
Basically the company wants me to go to uni/college. The teachers too. Oh, parents too.
I have been suffering in schools for my whole life, I really don't feel lile I could make myself go to school another 4 years.
And I also don't have the slightest idea of what I wanna do with my life, I have no goals currently and I'm afraid of that while I'm in this existential crisis state it is easier for people to tell me what's good for me.
Objectively this is a country of papers, so I guess it doesn't matter wheter it's web dev or the next super digital intelligence I do as a profession.
I also want to travel the world, but I need money for that Xd. If possible I'd love to move to another country, but still have no idea.
Thanks for reading through this depressing shit.9 -
Ok so 2 questions here:
(I’m not good at googling)
1. I want to run my telegram bot and some other really small things on a server. Do you have an idea what I could use. (Services or shy like a raspberry pi) it really doesn’t need much capacity
2. (Thank you for reading this long and helping me out) How can I download a website in nodejs and use sth. Like getelementbyid? -
What my ADHD brain looks like to an outsider:
My media player doesn't support ordered chapters, so now I have FreshRSS running on my VPS.
The actual mental process:
> MPC-BE doesn't support ordered chapters with the built-in filters
> I should install the third-party LAV Filters
> Not available on Scoop and I'm never touching Chocolatey again
> I wish I had Linux on this PC instead of Windows, so I could have a proper package manager to handle updates, but I digress
> Sure would be nice if I could find a way to know when this updates.
> Actually, tracking versions for multiple GitHub repos would be really nice.
> I would just subscribe but my email inbox is a mess already and I'd probably fail to see the emails
> GitHub Release pages have their own Atom feeds!
> I don't currently use any feed readers
> Maybe I should self-host a feed reader
> Set up FreshRSS Docker container on my server
> Actually installed the LAV Filters to solve the original problem.7 -
I remember when I was at vocational school, my teacher sat us down and had use start web development with HTML, (HTML wasn’t my first programming experience but that’s a rant for another day) and after I printed Hello World and changed it’s color, I was even more hooked than ever. This is something that’s fun, and interesting and I don’t need to pay to do or be around specific things to be able to practice. I can do this at home or at school and I can make my own programs if I need them, automate mundane tasks, and learn so much more about technology than ever.
And the final thing that sealed the deal was I could do this and make money and not be stuck in a field I would be miserable in. Which was a very important factor for me.4 -
Feature creep aside I do think after a few weeks of use that notifications on devrant could use a bit of work. There is a lot of interaction and it can get confusing.
Some use cases currently not supported:
- On long threads I want to know which comment of mine that got a new ++. Perhaps scrolling to it + different colour?
- Seeing the new interaction per thread rather than per timeline.
- Getting a hint on which thread people interacted with. First sentence would be useful.
- Muting threads.
- Marking individual notifications as read without opening them.
- Moving notifications out of the menu and giving them separate button to save a click (many times a day)
If something on the list is already possible I suggest it be made more obvious ;)
Apart from being full of awesome people I really like being able to sort the flow of posts. I know this isn't staffed anywhere near the big social media and it's fine the way it is. But this is my two cents even if no one asked for them.
@dfox ? -
i really dislike inheriting depricated projects😓.
really wanted to use angular 2 for current project but our hosting server is outdated and nodejs wont run on it.
realy wish we could update the server, but doing this would break 10 older sites we are being paid to host .
any ideas?15 -
Do you have a good use case to start learning kubernetes using the 300$ Google cloud startup bonus?
I need to build up knowledge because my work doesn't do it, so it could be either docker, or kubernetes. Both has to be done in a cloud platform because I have to do this in my spare time...
So do you have use cases and tasks for someone who's completely new to kubernetes? Or should I start with docker?5 -
Ok, I'm fed up with this, just read something about android constantly monitoring your phone's location, now it's time to shut this up.
Would you please be so kind and share information on which alternative "privacy-first" OS I could use and how to flash my device? For all I know, it runs a custom HTC modified OS. I'm quite unfamiliar with all those things gravitating Android. Heard about Cyanogen mod but that's about it.
What about compatibility with apps downloaded through the play store? (thinking about Threema) I would also need compatibility with WhatsApp (yeah, sucks, I know, but hard to convince regular people)
Thank you all :)2 -
Because teams is a big fucking waste. Wonder why does it have to use all that cpu, fking pirece shit. They could have made it a simple chat platform, but not Microsoft.
Teams, you've been the main cause of my everyday struggles, and I gave you one last chance but you proved to really like to storm your shit.
F .. at this point we're playing catch me, why do you have to launch yourself again after I just killed you?!
use you crap from browser.6 -
TLDR: Need for easy to use VR headsets for mobile phones...
Complete story:
There are so many interesting places to explore in this world but sadly the current pandemic situation has brought travel plans to a complete halt. Today I tried watching virtual tours of various cities on YouTube and it felt a bit relaxing.
I was planning to use VR to enhance the experience but it's quite a lot of trouble adjusting my phone in VR headset, controlling playback from my hands when the phone is in the headset.
I wish someone, somewhere would find a way to simplify this problem... Like making mobile-based VR headsets bit easier to use and control while keeping it at affordable to use and allow addition of mobile phones of any sizes...
If someone could actually do this...I think we might have the next groundbreaking startup in the next few years...😄
P.S. Google cardboard VR does not fit this criterion...4 -
Holy shit. I've been working on a project for the last few months. It's been going fairly well all things considered. We're currently at the tail-end of the project and are set to be dev complete next Friday.
We're on a headless CMS + Gatsby and decided to use a front-end framework (This is important to the story) to "speed development time."
PM comes to me yesterday and inquires about functional/visual QA on IE11. IE-What?! This framework I was told I had to use doesn't support IE11.. like.. at all, and now we need to support IE11, at the ass-end of this project, cause 60% of the traffic on their current site uses IE11? Oh come on!
So its looking like we get to re-write a few components from scratch. Then we get to try and fix the display issues for the other ones... FML, I was looking forward to being done with this so I could take a week off and go recharge before Thanksgiving garbage.1 -
Just found out that something like this would actually work in Java:
int a = 2;
switch(a) {
case 1:
int b = 1;
break;
case 2:
b = 2;
}
I know about the variable scoping part, but that doesn't means if the language allows this kind of shitty code you should use it.. Fuck took me 15 mins to resolve the merge conflicts. As during merge the 1st case was partially removed. And the code was filled with these kinds of logic. This could have been done in a minute without the shitty code..4 -
My first exposure to computers was when I was a kid.. as I was on a vehicle I saw a computer shop full of this computers.. that got me interested because I like to play games.. specially counter strike.. My father knew the owner so it was easy for me to go there and so I ask if I could go and play some games it was really fun I remember I spent 4 hrs every week.. which led to my parents buying a computer.. for all of us to use..

Is there a mockup/authoring system for linux that I can use to mockup gui interfaces? I want to be able to create pages of screens with button that link to other pages. I first want to use this to document out current app. Then I want to use it to create a new version so that others can review the approach I want to take.
I am first looking at libreoffice because you can draw primitives very easy. It has a scripting backend as well. I had used authoring systems years ago (20 years) on old black and white macs. I have not seen systems like that in a while. Searching for authoring systems for linux brings up a lot of web based ones. I don't want to mock it up on web if I can help it, but it could work if it did relative links to html files in the same directory. That way any browser would work.
I really just don't know what the state of the art tools used for this. Probably using terms I don't recognize.5 -
I just look at a layout like this and see a relational database. Because minus random markers, there is a defined set of relationships some of which can be inferred or taken from OTHER data like.
"Joe travels at 8 am +/- 1 hr 99% of the time, every day of the work week for the last 52 weeks, likely joe is commuting to this location"
or you could just add a schedule table and one item could be marked commute vs a log table of data that is actually happening.
With everything else I see the same things.
I also see a possibility for graph edges and the likej to get out of control really quickly when you start adding event data into it.
so what is the use of graph and whats its really offering ?
any data worthwhile is likely going to have some kind of structure, even if you add ad hoc fields that don't exist, after enough additions those fields should be standardized !28 -
Muahahahahahahaha!
I just had the most evil thought.
I could create a mod for Minecraft that is an interface to the devrant API. Then I could get thousands and thousands of Minecraft players to use this mod. It would be a FLOOD of noobs who know nothing about devrant posting on devrant from within Minecraft!14 -
It's winter and it's quiet. Too quiet. My shitty job has me sitting here, waiting for work to appear. I could be at home working on something dev related and fun and meaningful to the progress of my life but no, I have to be here and I have to "look" productive for the bosses. I hate this shit, it's like prison, except I get paid, so I should be thankful. I can remote into my PC at home but I already got snapped for that, now I'm paranoid and afraid to try use this shitty downtime in a productive way.
Well, guess I better go sweep the already swept floors again to maintain the illusion of "work" for my penny dripping masters.
QQ having nothing to do is worse than too much to do.1 -
Why.
A PHP variable "declared" in the jQuery.
I don't know why Sublime Text (3) does that.
(Sorry for the quality, the screencut was for friends but I thought it could belong here too.)
Disclaimer:
I don't use jQuery, previous "dev" did.
I don't actually care about this.6 -
I jumped on this NodeJS codebase to quickly implement an additional method in the custom logger. How hard could it be, right?
I implemented the method alright. But I can't find where to use it... There are like 10 different logger instances used in this tiny app and in one place logger is even used as a vessel (holder object) for the client's JWT token (to access it from the interactor).
oh, and it's a javascript app (somehow I assumed that node apps are typescript.. silly me!)
What the fØ©ĸ spaghetty-fest is this!?!?!4 -
In the past 3 months I worked on a new frontend project at work using "new things" like vue.js and webpack including Babel polyfills on production for the first time. Now the project is almost done an I've been sent on to other tasks on our older projects to help follow the deadline at these projects.
It is a hard cut to switch my head back to the old legacy code after this long time only working with the new stuff and technologies. I feel much less productive at the moment, because I know how much time I could safe if I just could use the new technologies. But there is now way around this. Finally I now have to maintain Symfony 1.2 and jQuery again instead of building new awesome stuff in this exiting new technologies.1 -
!devrant
helpdeskrant
Because number of reasons I happen to be part time working as help desk...
Problem 1: Could you teach us how to use a scanner?
Problem 2: I cannot open this (PDF) file.
Problem 3: My personal thumbdrive doesn't work, could you help me.
Problem 4: How do I use vlookup in excel
Problem 5: How can I connect my Iphone to my printer.
I don't know why IT people would choose to work in HD instead of Development.
Again, there are some reasons I'm doing support right now, don't judge me.
I hate myself right now....6 -
Just realised - even if I are usually on collision course with central IT they save me a whole lot of "can you help me with this?" by not letting us do anything ourselves. Printers, new software, settings, startpages, drivers, browsers etc. Everything has to go through them.
Add the fact that the last Windows machine I've had was a P4 when XP came out and I'm in the clear for a whole lot of helping out. "Sorry but I only use Debian and OS X, but you could ask our IT people" :) -
Either my experience with Linux got better or this OS improved a fuckton over the last years. About 3 or 4 years ago installed Ubuntu on my laptop just to try out something different. My experience:
- Reinstalled Ubuntu three times due to me fucking up something.
- Wine, with as little as it could run back then, could not be installed with proprietary nvidia drivers.
- I could not use LibreOffice because of some word bulshit which was needed for school.
- Managing dependencies was a literal hell for me (Different versions installed which resulted in conflicts)
And now:
- Wine 3.0 is about to be released
- Can run most games of today. (Fallout 4, Wolfenstein II, Overwatch)
- I can say that I could do 95% or even more on it. (Which is mostly due to me getting more experienced) -
Why CMake is a steaming pile of dogshit
- Doesn't echo the command lines it is running making it hard to figure out what it is doing
- Dumps a bunch of crap all ovey my directory structure. And I thought NPM was bad
- Generates 'Makefiles' but only kinda uses Make? (I think, its confusing) WTF
At this rate I wish I could use just bash scripts. At least I could figure out why a simple thing like why my compilation fails to locate an include file even though Is is clearly specified in include_dirs() directive.
Get phucked, Cmake9 -
I've been a windows user for a long time now, but I've been thinking of trying out Linux sometime soon. Which distro should I start with? And can I still play steam/origin games? I might also use a VM to see how I like it before I move over.
I'm sure I could google this, but a lot of you seem to use Linux, and this isn't stack overflow so I'm not expecting too many people to shit on me for asking 🙂5 -
Somebody: (whinwy) we need something to log into nonprivileged technical accounts without our rootssh proxy. We want this pammodule pam_X.so
me: this stuff is old (-2013) and i can't find any source for it. How about using SSSD with libsss_sudo? Its an modern solution which would allow this with an advantage of using the existing infrastructure.
somebody: NO I WANT THIS MODULE.
me: ok i have it packaged under this name. Could you please test it by manipulating the pam config?
Somebody: WHAT WHY DO I NEED TO MANIPULATE THE PAMCONFIG?
me: because another package on our servers already manipulates the config and i don't want to create trouble by manipulate it.
Somebody: why are we discussing this. I said clearly what we need and we need it NOW.
we have an package that changes the pam config to our needs, we are starting to roll out the config via ansible, but we still use configuration packages on many servers
For authentication as root we use cyberark for logging the ssh sessions.
The older solution allowed additionally the login into non-rootaccounts, but it is shut down in the next few weeks after over half an year of both systems active and over half an year with the information that the login into non-privileged accounts will be no more.7 -
I use this app from Laptop and It does not have draft facility :(
Could you just make this popup close by clicking on close button only not from outside area of popup

Do we have vfio enthusiasts here?
Now that I made my second GPU boot into Arch Linux (inb4 I use arch, btw. jokes in the comments), I also set up a windows vm with GPU passthrough.
When I plug the monitor cable into the hdmi port of my passthrough'd GPU, I can see windows os on the screen.
My problem is that I want to have it inside of the same monitor without changing the from hdmi port to hdmi port manually, but "softwarely" (neologism ftw).
I read about looking-glass in the arch wiki (I use arch, btw. + On a serious side note though, I really like the arch wiki. It is very straightforward.), but I could not get it to synchronize with the Spice display server.
Does someone know how the solution to this problem?6 -
Watch an "Introduction" video about it, or read the docs/blogs on why and where to use this particular tech. If you find it useful, then get your head down and work. Watch every YouTube video, read company docs, read random blogs, read FAQs. Honestly, any source you can get your hands on.
And never forget to write more code than you read.
Consistency and hard work is the only key.
I still remember when I was first getting introduced to front end, I didn't sleep for 3 straight days and was studying all that I could. -
So I was working on a web app for my university which was supposed to use their authentication system. After various headaches, not even the example given with the documentation was connecting to the credentials server and nobody could help me with this because the person who developed the system wasn't working anymore for the university. Weeks of work lost because they don't know how their own stuff works :@

I had an idea for an open source project, but wanted to get some feedback before I committed a lot of time and energy to it. Seeing as how devRant is the only social media type app I use, I thought this would be a good place to ask.
The project would be an open source keyboard for iOS that would make it easier for devs to write code on their mobile devices. There's already a few "developer" keyboards, but they're either paid apps, or haven't been updated in a while.
Creating a custom keyboard isn't very complex, so it could be a good place for newer devs to actually contribute code and get comfortable with open source in general.
So my question is, do people use third party keyboards? Is this something people would be interested in contributing to? Should I go back to the drawing board?3 -
*Long post*
Fuck Firebase.
I am working on a Instagram clone. So far it was going good until I came to the follow/unfollow part. Specifically where users post will only be visible to the friends who are following him/her.
Initially I thought I could use Firebase rules for that. Turns out you can not use the rules for filtering because of cascading properties of firebase rules.
Second one was the traditional approach in which you can check the author of the post and if the author is in my friend list then display it. But this seems idiotic approach because in the long run users will have to download thousands of posts just to check them. I know I can use the order by but this is also a cumbersome approach nonetheless.
Does anybody has any idea on how to do it. I'm stuck here.4 -
Fucking shit Mongoose. I have written it again but they managed to gather every antipattern in their lib.
On the topic testing they write that you shouldnt use Jest but use Mocha for testing. Yeah sure, I determine my testrunner for a fucking data model thats at its best unnecessary because the native driver can do everything mongoose can but better.
I would ditch this shit the second I could if it was for me. Unreliable junk!3 -
I had this teacher who was teaching us how to use java and .NET to parse XML data to an excel sheet. Let's say every week i was spending at least 2 hours finding bugs in the excel formatting and telling it to the teacher.
This happened for few weeks and when the project ended I could see how tired of he was.
To this day me and my colleague still rant about that -
Focus? Everything.. Downside? Not enough time to get good at everything. It depresses me. I see a language and framework and I Wana learn it and use it but I don't have the time cause I'm too busy coding on another platform. This makes me sad. I wish it were the matrix and I could download all languages syntax and apis into my brain so I could spend less time learning and more time making something significant. Okay okay, my focus is Java/Android with a dash of web

I am trying to isolate logic in React with functional components. Is it a bad idea to forwardref to a custom object that I use to expose actions? This way I could model the ref behavior from old class-based components where it was perfectly normal to represent a capability as a class method.
-
I posted a few days prior about how I was starting CPP because I had been crushing all my other higher end stuff (Js, Python, Flutter/Dart, etc.) and that CPP was gonna destroy me. Haha I'm doing alright, but I need to find something to use CPP for in order to determine when I will need this besides games or say building a browser engine. Could use a little direction as to what I could be working towards. I have NOT encountered a problem that I need it for yet, but I wanted to familiarize myself with it because it's an essential language regarding full stack. I am a solo dev!2

Focus...
I am on vacations and I thought: well, let me take a look at Shopify. People uses that, may be learning it could be good.
So I created a Dev account, a sample store and opened the docs.
"Oh, you should use this and that JS library and work with React (link to react)"
So I clicked the link and now I am learning React...5 -
Does anyone know of a tool that will statically analize a C program and check if it's behaviour would be the same as a C++ program? Flagging things like implicit void* coercions, for example.
The use case would be if you find a C library and want to use it with C++, for example. Or are writing a library and want it to be usable in both C and C++.
If this doesn't exist,
does anyone want to help me make it? I was thinking we could modify an existing C linter to do this.26 -
I think maybe I am doing something wrong.
I have this node.js application I am building with typescript and I wrote tests in mocha. Now I need to make some changes which break quite a few tests.
When I run mocha on the command line the errors whizz past. When I worked in java and .net (with junit and nunit) you could just click a test in the ide to run it. So you could 'fix' one test at a time. Also you could just double click on a fail and it would jump you to the code for that test or the exception that failed.
I found this extension for visual studio code that adds a sidebar to visual studio code. It looked good but now I spent the last hour trying to get it to run typescript tests - looks like it doesn't support the compilers argument.
Surely other developers must do this sort of stuff. I am not using an obscure technology stack right? Do you write automated tests for your codebase? What tools do you use? Should I switch ide? switch testing frameworks? -
so i had this day at college we were supposed have a viva ( oral test ) ..the teacher asked me to print hello world..in java but no where can i use a static method including 'main'..well i made a static block instead and added System.exit in it.. and i had to write the complete syntax of main else it wont run..but my teacher snapped back at me saying it could be done.. with a non static main
..nodded an okay..didnt want a fight..came home..figured out the thing she said is now obsolete.. fuckin hell..update yourself at least..1 -
Good morning all,
New to this app and figured I could use it to learn a few things and to meet some people in the field. Currently studying game design and learning C# in Unity. Any other game devs in here?3 -
I am not a programmer, but I know a little bit of Python, C# and C++, but mostly basic syntax of latest two. Nevertheless it gives me higher ground, why?
I develop way od thinking which maker my life easier. I Havel intershop in Pharmacy and they print small papers with number which you show to get remaining drugs. Currently is number, 17592 which makes someone to type almost 40k numbers and erase also this amount. I use variable function in Libreoffice Writer and you have to type one number and it autonumber 64 (easily to expand but unnecessary) and save fucktone of time 😃 And this is why I thing that teaching programming is beneficial, because it develops mindset of resolving problems in easier way.
On the other hand in a few hours I wrote program for my girlfriend to draw randomly picture of herbal material (leaf, root, fruit etc) and ask for Latin name of this material, check if is correct and display necessary information. Programming was quick, most of time I prepare data for this software and this feels so fuxkibg awesome that I could use my knowledge to help my girlfriend and make something useful which makes me proud (code looks like blue waffle, but it works 😃). Fucking deadlines, but at least I could finish it 😃 -
Anyone got any idea what hardware this is? Tempted to buy one and put openwrt on it as a credit card router... For that need to know what openwrt target I could flash.
Already found a USB step up converter to power it
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/...
(Yes, I know I could use an old Pi but I hope the power consumption is lower)11 -
Anybody watch the "Electric Dreams" episode called "Safe and Sound"?
This makes me think this is where we will end up with tech companies altering searches/websites for the individual. Making people believe things that are not true by representing false narratives. The actions of these individuals will reinforce narratives presented to the masses. There is already people finding that search engines and social media can sway elections by several percentage points. It seems like someone could use that same tech to target someone and turn them into a <fill in the blank here>. Urging them to some action. The rest of the world is like "WTF just happened?".
This is not a world I want.2 -
Fuck you Linux! I thought user password validation would be a piece of cake, like bash one liner. How wrong could I be!
Yeah, it's already ugly to grep hash and salt from /etc/shadow, but I could accept that. But then give me a friggin' tool to generate the hash. And of course the distro I chose has the wrong makepswd, OpenSSL is too old to have the new SHA-512 built in, as it should be a minimal installation I don't want to use perl or python...
And the stupid crypto function that would do me the job is even included in glibc. So it's only one line of C-code to give me all I want, but there is no package that would provide me this dull binary? Instead I will have to compile it myself and then again remove the compiler to keep image small?5 -
Think about how big this project could get. Use version control. Build anything as future-oriented as possible. Use all common standards.
I still have some quick'n'dirty side projects that don't let me sleep well sometimes: "Nah, it will be a one time thing, no body will use it anyway" ... -
How would you implement a system that allow people to share a product that's normally one price but because of the referral there is a discount. Oh and the discount is supposed to based which country you live in.
Right now the whole system runs on the honor system and a little front end verification. How do I clean up this mess??
Sure getting the user's location could work until they use a vpn. I don't really know what to do here.3 -
I just realized what a horrible fate I escaped several years ago.
I was just finishing bachelor s degree, when I was offered to write my diploma under teacher, who works in Bitrix.
I was given first tasks how to make web site on my own l, I liked it pretty much in the beginning, I installed sql database, made simple registration, login. And then I was offered to try CMS bitrix (which is essentially proprietary local version of Wordpress). With words, that I will see how much easier to work in this way.
I found myself not trusting it, something was fishy. I could not understand why, am I as beginning dev in it, could not use it for free? Why could I not making deving in it, without paying big sum per month(it was big for student-me at least).
I went to work with computer graphics during diploma then, and made minecraft analog in c# (at that time I played minecraft too much)
Now I am working with modern open source world wide supported frameworks. And recently saw a web site made by bitrix devs... They went into production without... https. And I think they are the same ones.4 -
NodeJS and MongoDB. And tutorials.
Everywhere tutorials show simple example of console.log output of findOne. Good, that works... But when I try to extrapolate example to assign results to variable, it won't work. Inside that fetch anonymous function it works... But outside, simply undefined no matter what I try. Return doesn't return either...
Why it is so hard to make tutorials and examples that would be actually useful. I've spent hours with this already.
And on top of that it is really hard to find tutorials staying with minimum extra dependencies. Like most tutorials in this case throw mongoose in the soup. And I don't want that.
Sometimes makes me question why I try to learn these new things, when I have knowledge of other technologies that I could use faster and easier...3 -
So i have decided to rewrite my old project from the ground. This time propely with all the bells and whisles and the proper planning.
Before i ever could start hammering at my keyboard in VS like a monkey i have encountered a few problems:
1.I want for it to be Reeeeesponsive or whatever yeet the kids think is cool now. So winforms arent going to be cut it, i would have to manualy handle resizing of the buttons and text. So UWP or WPF are the only choice.
2.I want it to be multiplatform. Some users might want to use it on windowsnt so i have to be prepared. Options: Winforms or .netcore without gui......
3.Licence - I want to allow people to use it but i always want them to know who the author is. That app wont get that much attention so allowing people only to use it is the safest option.
I wish there was a easier way...
Still i love C#5 -
Being a webdev has ruined my ability to use any website/online service. Does this happen to anyone else? I invariably end up sending the developer a stack of feature requests and suggestions as I'm sat there thinking "I could do this better!"
Ofc in truth I may be able to do that one part better (usually bits around making the experience as simple and fluid as possible for users), but I wouldn't be able to do other parts half as well. I wonder if I built services like that I would have some annoying git emailing me with all the things they think I've missed... ;-)1 -
I read this rant about IE (https://www.devrant.io/rants/514347) but could not relate to it (I use Linux MS suckers!) So I thought I'd post a browser rant of my own, and this time it is about Chrome (or Blink since it also affects Opera). Whenever I start typing localhost Chrome suggests "localhost" but when I click this suggestion it takes me to a Google search result when all I really wanted was to test a webapp on my dev box. This is very annoying every time.
-
So, I get this super awesome machine, a hardware which was my dream to use for gaming...
2.2Ghz i7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 4GB Radeon Pro 555X, and SSD.
But...
Its a Mac. Nevermind, CSGO is there for Mac.
The IT dept has some weird shit on this laptop that can sense if I'm doing something wrong 🙄
Why could they not spare us?8 -
WordPress and it's fucking buggy themes and dashboard, fml ,only God knows why on earth I decided to use this pile of shite wordpress.if I could I would have migrated to another CMs I would have done so long time ago.Wordpress, you are wasting my life away having to manage a website with your buggy shit.6

Hello good people i need someones help... i want to build an online teaching website for practice ... like treehouse or pluralsight but a much more lightweight version.
I dont know how to start ;
Which skeletons to use.
Which cms do i choose if necessay.
Should i use node.
Should i use react.
Where do i host it.
Why do i need each point mentioned.
What else do i need.
I learn a lot my self but i really need direction on this one .. its my first big project.
I intend being a freelancer.
I could also do with mentorship from anyone willing here.....!!!!5 -
I finally configured my VPS. (haven't used linux before that)
Now when I installed my laravel 5.2 project and wanted to use composer to get all the dependencies I came across an deprecated dependency. So now I'll either do a quick fix and update the dependency or upgrade to laravel 5.3. The second option is obviously better but takes more time. If only someone else could do this shit for me and I'd just be busy writing code. : /1 -
It's kinda hard if you're a beginner and don't know if you're doing things with good practice...
I would really appreciate if someone could review my code and tell me if I'm on the right track: https://github.com/Dollique/...
For Info: I'm doing this all by myself for a learning purpose and I know I could easily use a finished framework :)
Thanks!1 -
So, this guy wants to pay me to do his final project for a web design class. Easy money, but highly unethical. My hours at work were cut to basically zero, so I could really use the cash. What would you do?
(Alternatively, if anyone is aware of any open projects that AREN'T unethical, I'm all ears)7 -
!rant, reality check.
This may sound odd, but sometimes i deny wanting to learn a term or meaning of something because it is a severed thing from my knowledge.
E.I.: i read "Hey you can use LINQ for this!" as i am programming in C#. I do not mind reading up on what LINQ is, why LINQ is etc.
But, if i run into something like hey you can use XAML or whatever the hell, which i can't mentally link to anything i know, i flatout even refuse to look it up, or try to find out if it is related to my skills and if not, flat out ignore anything besides the basic concept.
Eventually i could still end up learning it, but if it doesn't click from where i am at right now as a programmer, i just skip it as unrelated noise.
Technically i deny to learn something, making me a bad "student" in a way. Otherwise i use my time optimally to only expand my knowledge on the borders or my current knowledge.
Does anyone else does this? Anyone longer then 4 years? Does anyone also apply this outside of programming? How did all that go for you? Is it a bad habbit or a good one?3 -
I want to build a platform that decreases our need for apps. Right now it's hard for a new platform to enter the smartphone market as nobody will make apps for it if it has no users, nobody will use it if it has no apps, etc. without this centralization on apps we could see tons of new interesting smartphone platforms such as the ones that failed like Windows Phone, Firefox OS, webOS, etc.2
-
I'm writing this in response to the article shared by @Christine
God!!! And I wanted to start learning web development. Should I even start with HTML? I mean.. ugh!
Any SANE web developer here who could share their usual tools for building a website.
And if you would use entire different tool sets for different sites, which ones would you use for which kinds of sites?
(Is this question too much?)7 -
Where's vscode for browser tabs?
Like, I just want 1 browser window, and split it, resize the windows, split them horizontally vertically etc.. ? Is there a browser that does this?
I feel like you could basically use iframes but yeah!10 -
I remember using opencv already
and i remember tori and i discussing that the video frames are in what i later read as mat format.
and i remember thinking ..'sigh, whats the use'.
i wish i could have enjoyed the last number of years not pumped the strength out of my body just trying to survive and retain some semblance of intelligence meanwhile.
its a waste of time.
all of this, a complete waste of time and always has been.
and there is noone trustworthy to tell me what to do. noone who means anything but harm to everything and everyone.10 -
Anyone here used Kivy before?
My brother is gonna try to learn Python soon, I'm will help. But I thought it would be cool if he could use this skill to make apps. Any thoughts?2 -
Could it be, that we use i for incremental loops because it's an abbreviation for iterator (or increment)? 🤔 Why haven't I though of this sooner?!8

I need some advice on how to separate workstations. Currently I'm working with 6 projects at the moment and sometimes I use my PC, sometimes win laptop, sometimes macbook and it has become a mess.
Ideally I would like to have separate windows/mac instances where I could have project specific stuff installed. Having different windows accounts is not an option since I'm not sure if I will be able to multitask between projects effectively. Separate windows desktops also is not good enough for me. Buying multiple PC's as well. Maybe some cloud solution would be the way?
Can anyone advice on this?11 -
When using python, almost every other linter/formatter shoves down pep8 down my throat.
I used autopep8, which has NO CONFIG FOR USING TABS. FFS. The only solution I could find is disabling indent reformatting. How is this a solution at all?
Then I found black. Black is a piece of shit. Let's move on.
Now, I use yapf+pylint. This is basically clang-fomat for python. I love it, it does exactly what I expect it to do.2 -
@dfox I cannot scroll down the list of somebody's or my own rants on the profile screen. I use the Android app, and scrolling after a point becomes a tedious process only allowing a millimeter at a time. Could you please fix this?5

Argh
Help
If you know, a specific string is always going to be the same, and theres no way any other value could be passed to this statement. Is it still ok to use string.substring(0, string.IndexOf(&$&$))?
I feel dirty every time....1 -
I haven't coded a new project in a long time. I want to build something, show it to the world and hope people use it. I love webapps as I'm pretty experienced in this, and have a huge interest for smart homes, internet of things, twilio, innovative payments and more. What could my MVP be?

I have seen references to API keys in several places. I have setup a few for various web services. However, I don't have a firm understanding of how they are protected (or not protected) from being copied and used by apps other than my own. I read a quick blurb from Google that said to use regular authentication over API keys due to them being able to be copied.
So my questions are: Are API keys just a bad way to subscribe services? Is there a way to protect them from being discovered? Maybe the app logs into a auth point for your services and is served the key to use with other services? But this key could still be gleaned from memory. Are API keys going to go away maybe in deference to things like oauth?3 -
Guys, so I researched a lot about this but couldn't reach a conclusion. How does chat app work on Android?
I mean you could use XMPP, SSE or socket. But how long is the connection kept open? And what's is the data flow chart from db to push notifications (FCM) to device?3 -
Hi dev!, how do you deal with the dilemma of choosing between using a library (gem, package, plugins...) to implement a solution or building from scratch...
Use case: you are working on project x, you need to implement a feature, but stuck between importing a library ( however you will need to customize the library to fit in requirement) and building feature from scratch ( this may take you more time but you have more control).
I have been in both scenarios, whereby I use a library but spent 2 days on customizing, only for me to discard it and implement feature within 2 hours.
I had been in a situation where I build the feature from scratch, only to discover, a one-liner from a library could have saved me hours and whole stress.
I NEED YOUR EXPERIENCE.
THANKS IN ADVANCE4 -
Wouldn't it be clever if a programmer decides to code his programs the way so that they always use the last CPU core available?
I mean: on 8-core: CPU 7 > CPU 6 > CPU 5...
I mean, if every other program is used to start using CPU 0 and then to move upwards... This could be an advantage...4 -
Got invoved in a project that has to do with deploying a healthcare mangement system in local health care centres across states and this centers don't have internet access but we could use solar to power those centers so we don't have issue with power but how do i get the local data to internet since we need those data online1

Hello, I am doing master in Pharmacy, but I like programming and consider to switch or connect somehow industries. I could write simple scripts and small programmes in Python, but I want to write code with good practice from beginning.
So my question what should I know and put in use, maybe some resources if someone has them or just terms for further search. At this moment I use gitlab for VCS (my commits sucks and my whole usage of Git sucks, but at least I use branches), I am trying to separate control from model (MVC but I guess I do it poorly), also I use keepchangelog rules for changeling, and semantic versioning for versions, PEP8 and Pokemon names for my variables and functions as it helps read code later.7 -
I've got an idea for a site I'd like to make, nothing complicated, just a little project to open source and show what I can do. I primarily use Rails and React, but this project could be done in just React with a Firebase (or similar) backend. My question is, do I make a Rails API just to show some of my rails code, or go with what I'd recommend a client do and go with Firebase? Thoughts?2

New to AWS, is my best option for having a integer value (maximum number of items to process) that I can override for a lambda step function
to read a value from an S3 bucket where I can overwrite the value if I want to change it. This seems silly and I feel silly as I expect my situation should be simple and not novel at all.
For some reason I expected I could use an environment variable, but didn't see an option to overwrite it in the web GUI https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lambda/...2 -
Tip of the year? I bought an iPhone 7 because the battery in my 3 year old iPhone 5s was very bad. It had less than 25% of its original capacity.
I gave the 5s to my son but quickly realized that he could not use a phone with such a bad battery. We therefore considered buying him a brand new 5s.
Luckily I found out that repair shops can actually replace the battery! I thought that this was not possible. So now my son has a 'new' iPhone 5s for 1/10 of the price of a new 😄1 -
first of all sorry for my english, its not my first language
hello, i am an aspiring programmer and im honestly just a really big newbie, im learning vb dot net and ran into an issue that i had. So basically i was using the WinActivate function from autoit with FindWindow(using the title of the window) to supply WinActivate the hwnd. Heres my issue: When the window is NOT minimized so selected or behind other windows the WinActivate function works completely fine, but when the window is minimized it doesnt work, i have read on the documentation that neither function cares wether the window is minimized or not so i came to the conclusion that it might have a different title when minimized? The window is the league of legends client by the way. What can i do to solve/debug this issue, perhaps spy++ could help me? how would i use this, i could upload the visual studio project if someone wants to help me out in that way. WinActivate((FindWindow(Nothing, "League of Legends"))) this is what it looks like.12 -
Why does devRant show I have 6 unread notifications?
I cleared the cache. Even downloaded the mobile app to check whether it was only a problem with the web-app.
No, that number is still there. The mobile app claims it is the comments section. I scrolled down to 2019 ( no, I haven't been all that active ) and still no unread notifications.
Why didn't you think of putting up an 'unread tab' when you were creating all those tabs on the mobile app? Please add an unread tab 🙏
Also, the read and unread markers in the dark mode could have a little more darker contrast difference in the dark mode. I don't know about light mode, because I don't use it ( but I could check once I get notifications from this rant; I'm turning light mode on for a brief while to check this )
I haven't had unread-anxiety before, but I guess I have it now ( not really though )23 -
Having a dilemma... I need help with my gaming projects. I know a guy who I could train since he has lots of potential but Im having trust issues. Its because I invested around 10k into my codebase and Im afraid to give access to that guy since I suspect that he might use files and some day run away to make his own project. So im back to square 1 again which is loosing my mind with this huge workload. What should I do? Should I just say fuck it ant make him sign some air tight NDA agreement? Even then he could stand up and leave 2 months in and open a competitor project if he doesnt like my management style...3

Looking for a recommendation on what I should use to code on my phone.
I own an iPhone and usually spend a lot of time on public transit. I thought that it would be better to spend that time coding or learning something new. I am semi experienced in programming and this would help me get better as well.
Any recommendations on any app (possibly free) that I could download to kinda allow me to code and learn at the same time?5 -
Hi guys. I could use a bit of help. I am receiving the lastLogout data from the DB, and if it's NULL, it means that I will start the tutorial because it's the first login. I am rendering with serverside, and I'm using handlebars. So the data is rendered nicely with

What is the best practice to watch for this piece of information from frontend javascript? Shall I simply create an event listener? It feels a bit dirty...3 -
I learned that I could use javascript to manipulate parts of Windows 98SE and decided I really like this shit and started buying programming and web design books.
I was only doing it for fun and didn't see it as a career path and moved on to lame things. Now, years later, I'm kicking myself for thinking like that and having to learn all of the new shit I didn't keep up with and actually trying to make it a career. -
I have been using Linux for a while and I get update notification about 3 times per week. I find it annoying. As soon as I plan to get some work done, I get a large notification popup saying "Hey, it's time to install le updates". I find it distracting; especially so because I use my laptop about 3 times per week; so basically EVERY TIME when I'm about to use it, it says "HEY you know what? Time for UPDATES".
Updates on Windows are annoying too; but at least they do not appear as often. I find this unacceptable and I do not know how anyone could think that distracting people from work so often is "ok". This is bad.11 -
Any ASP.NET Core experts here? I'm using the localization code found from asp.net core documentation and it works fine except that if I let the browser open and idle for like 15 minutes and then refresh the page it always returns an english version. If I refresh again it goes back to the chosen language and works as long as I use it. Same thing locally and on server. Any ideas what this could be related to? I'm lost :(

So, I am in the last stages of development of a really big project and I need to figure out a way to package future patches and updates for the client in order for them to manually update the project on prod server.
For reasons I cannot specify here, they will not use any automated process, and we need to provide regular patches and updates for the next year.
So I was thinking of using git archive to package changed files from our repo for every new commit, or series of commits, and just give them that, along with any database schema updates as sql files (again, no automation can be used).
We are talking about a large PHP + MySQL app, and cannot use automated deployment strategies.
I feel there must be a better way to do this, but this is the best I could come up with so far.
What do you people think?
Any ideeas? -
I'm working on a project to create a filter for an essay examples database on https://essaypay.com/essay-examples..., and I could use some advice on the best way to approach it. The filter needs to allow users to select the length of the essay and the level of writing separately, but also be able to use both filters at once. I'm using Python and have some knowledge of C/C++. What would be the best way to implement this filter efficiently and effectively?3

Turns out... Angular doesnt have a fucking library or a way to communicate directly with kafka that's built on a separate backend!
I would have to either call a REST route to the backend which then forwards transmitting the "real time" request to kafka broker. Or transmit a socketio real time event to trigger kafka.
What kind of BULLSHIT is this? Why the fuck would i use kafka at all then in this case? I could replace it and cut the shit with socketio! Ridiculous!5 -
Say I wanted to characterize motion in a video and derive a frequency of that motion, and the extents of the motion?
For instance: walking, jumping, running, punching, dancing, etc. The view might vary and be further away or closer to where it is harder to make out features.
I am assuming I would use some sort of AI to identify objects and perhaps bone structure. Then compare against a model to determine motion type, and then attributes. I have seen cameras get bone structure, but I think it required 2 views. Such as the cheap motion capture systems.
Could this be done in real time of video playing? Or would this need to preprocess and use the info created during playback of the media?
I really don't know much about AI models. I have been curious about how it can be used with video.3 -
To you CPP-devs,
I want to write a small ask-password tool, like systemd-ask-password, but tty-only and non-systemd.
I use termios to switch the terminal into noncanonical mode and disable echo of stdin.
Now I want to read chars from cin and append them to a string, until I read an endl or an error occurs.
In C, I could use an input-loop with getchar, but how could I do this the CPP-way, since cin.get() is nonblocking?2 -
Why in the world wide web is it so hard to use JavaScript to dynamically create a custom web component element after the page has loaded!? I swear I must be missing something obvious. I know it isn't working because document.currentScript.ownerDocument is null and I use that to get the template and it works great if the elements are on the page already but it fails as soon as I try to use JS to create a new element of that component and I can't figure it out!
I could easily change the pages to be pre-rendered with data and it'd work fine but I plan on building in a service worker to cache the page skeleton and store the elements in IDB.
(This has been just a fun side project for me this week, until now it's turned into a frustrating project I spent most of my night on)1 -
I’m leaving the company I’m working for this week. Git really sick yesterday. Pinged hr about it and told them that I know that it looks bad being sick on the last days. Asked if I could use the sickdays we get, got refused and had to use a vacation day.2

react-native, firebase and iOS.
Mainly iOS, im really stuck and i could use a little help, my google fu has reached its limit for this.. -
i miss the big job because i could not solve this problem.

i want to create a service that periodically logs in to a 3rd party service to check if anything has changed in their account, then send a message via firebase to notify the user who's account has been changed.
can you recommend any program/hosting/server that would be ideal for this?
i prefer dart (because i built the frontend in flutter, but i'd use most any language).
i'd prefer not to pay for a dedicated server because of price, so if i could just create processes that run every hour or so, that would be ideal.2 -
I may have inadvertently gotten my old university's Comp Sci System Services addicted to CTF wargames. oops.
I also just found out that you can prevent a more command from automatically exiting on completion only by limiting the size of the window of your terminal. I lost a good 4 hours of trying literally every ssh command combination I could, when all I had to do was use a small terminal screen. Whoever designed this last challenge should be given an award and then shot.3
