Installed Linux on an old windows laptop. This is my conversation 5 minutes ago...
Wife: "Have how you got internet?"
Me: "What do you mean, it has a wireless adapter built in?"
Wife: "But it's not Windows?"
WTF!!!
Me: "Pass my phone, this is going on devRant"
Wife: "Please no, not again"25 -
When one of those "Your windows has been infected, click here to remove virus now" ads slips through the adblocker while I'm on my Linux3
-
RandomGuy: I can't seem to play some videos on my laptop. Can you help?
LinuxPro: You have to install Arch Linux to do that. Windows 10 sucks.25 -
These foreign Indian scammers keep calling me about "computer virus".
Today, the guy told me to press ctrl + Windows key. I told him I use Arch Linux and then told him I use Netscape as my browser, and he still didn't take the hint.
He asked me "how can you have the Windows key on your keyboard and use Linux?".
#stupidfuck8 -
I remember back at study I had this friend who hated windows just as much as I did.
Then, for a project, he HAD to run windows on his laptop.
He was very fucking angry about that but did this:
Installed a Linux (debian?) vm (virtualbox) on his laptop and gave it all the spare resources.
Then he ran it fullscreen.
He was still using windows technically but at boot up he booted up the Linux vm and he just worked with that one.
Teacher wasn't pleased but he couldn't do much since the fucker ran windows on his laptop as instructed xD13 -
Found a guy working at Microsoft with this bio.
"Software Engineer at Microsoft. Loves Linux, the cloud, Vim, and DevOps. But mostly Linux"
Like come on Microsoft, even they choose Linux over Windows21 -
> Hey I use Arch
> Did you know that I use Arch Linux?
> Arch Linux with i3 is best
> Have I told you that I use Arch Linux?
> Windows is crap, I use Arch
> I love the rollback function in Arch Linux
> i3 GAPS on ARCH LINUX IS BEST
> My girlfriend is Arch Linux
> I fuck Arch Linux
> I name my kids Arch Linux27 -
Linux user on a Windows machine: "ugh, this is terrible."
Windows user on a Linux machine: "I don't know what I'm doing."12 -
We have a couple of magazines on the lunch table at work.
There was a paper cloth covering one magazine and one of the Linux engineers lifted it up. This is how it went:
LE: (Linux Engineer) hmm what's under here...? *picks up the cloth*
*a windows magazine appears*
LE: (while putting the cloth back) ew windows, let's keep you hidden!
*other engineers laughing*15 -
There are only two reasons you should use Windows:
1. You are developing for Windows.
2. You cannot live without a game which still has no Linux support.
However, the right thing to do is refuse all contracts on Windows development and quit playing games that have no Linux port.21 -
"Just try and move your workflow to Windows, it's not that different from Linux"
My boss, when I asked him if I could install Arch on my company laptop20 -
Today is the best day of my life!
My girlfriend asked me to install on her computer Linux becouse she got suck with windows.
I'm waiting for the wedding day.19 -
DevRant is madness
Screen shots of people installing Linux on Game consoles.
Windows on soda machines.
macOS on anything.
Madness I tell you. MADNESS!3 -
Damn!
Sometimes I just wonder about the level of customization you get at Linux. You can't even imagine a desktop that looks like this on Windows.37 -
I still remember one of my lecturer asking whole class to install Linux because ,she thinks PHP does not work on windows machine 😂😂9
-
I'll be buying a second hand Surface tomorrow.
Will put Linux onto it right away, found good instructions on doing that including making the touchscreen work.
If that doesn't work, I'll sell the fucker again because I'm not running windows. I'm just not. That malware can go fuck itself.
Looking forward to transferring that windows machine to a Linux one!10 -

jim : "let me see just a.... WOW! WHAT IS THIS?"
me:"ubuntu"
jim:"wat?"
me:"linux"
jim:"well... " +sigh + "that's your problem right there! this works to everyone else. and they're on windows. why would you ever not use windows?"
me:"have you ever tried anythig else?"
jim:"never needed to. windows works just fine.."
me:"well... does your computer ever freeze?"
jim:"constantly"
me:"that doesn't happen on ubuntu. at least it is quite rare"
jim:"nah... you're mistaken. windows rocks! anyway, you should probably talk to someone who knows ubuntu cause my chrome works just fine so it must be this ubuntu of yours.."14 -
friend: *sees me using linux on my laptop* oh hey u got the same desktop as my boyfriend's
me: "really? hes using linux mint too? since when did he change from windows to linux?"
friend: "whats linux?"
me: "this" *shows some features*
friend: "oh i thought it was just the background picture......"7 -
I recently found an old laptop and turned on. It was running Windows but was too slow to use. I had Linux installed and it runs like new. I now have a laptop to use with no extra charge. Thanks Linux!2

The first time I see a train info thing running on linux. Usually they run on windows Xp. Feat. my green shirt.5

So, I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on my main desktop now.
I think I fucked up my partitions because Windows boots to a black screen now, but I'm not even mad.

"For those that don't know: Alpine Linux is a security-oriented, lightweight Linux distribution based on musl libc and busy box. The latest version of Alpine Linux v3.3 weighs in at a whopping 5MB. Not bad for a full blown Linux OS considering 5MB is same size as the Windows Start button."
That last sentence made me laugh so badly :D4 -
Play, today my classmate asked me why I am using android studio in fucking Linux, while the same can be done on Windows..
My Rxn : Slapped her9 -
Installed Fedora in a partition on my old Acer laptop having never used Linux before. It's so much faster than Windows 10!
And the terminal is pretty 😍10 -
Updated Nvidia drivers, installed latest wine, Vulkan, DXVK (<3) and Overwatch. It now runs on ultra on Ubuntu 16.04 with around the same fps as on high on Windows. Gotta love the Linux community!12
-
Best:
1. Get into Linux
2. Quit Med studies after 5 years and jump into the IT train.
Worst:
use windows tools to resize partitions on a dual-boot laptop. Lost all my data on Linux parttn. :(8 -
Today at school:
We had a chemistry lesson. Somehow we came to talk about Linux...
So first our teacher said that Linux is shit.
Then another student said, Linux would be like Windows.
Teacher searched for "linux ist scheiße" (which means "linux is shit") on YouTube and let us watch a video.
He also said the whole Internet says Linux is shit and that it would never be more important then Windows.
Kill me pls😢13 -

DISCLAIMER: UNPOPULAR OPINION
I'm tired of the Linux community, they effectively discourage me of taking part in any discussion online
I'm currently making Windows-only soft, some game stuff, some legacy DirectX stuff you got it.
Everytime I go online, this shitty pattern happens, when I stumble upon a problem in project I don't know how to fix and I ask for help
These are responses
- HA, HA, WINDOWS BAD, HA, HA, GET REAL SYSTEM
- In Linux, we can do X too. I mean it has 4x less functionality and way shittier UX and is even harder to implement but it can probably work on too Linux, so it's better, yes, just move to Linux
- btw you didn't like Linux before? Try this distro man, it's better <links random distro>
Is there anything valuable in the Linux community? I feel like these people don't like Linux anyway, they just hate Windows. Every opinion, tip is always opinion based. Anyone who works on internals knows how much better and how well thought is Windows kernel compared to Linux kernel. Also, if someone unironically uses Linux distro on desktop PC then he's a masochist because desktop Linux is dieing. So many distros ceased work only this year.
Is it a good tool for servers and docker containers? I don't have my head stuck up my ass to admit that yes, it's much better than Windows here.
This community got me stressed right now, I fear that when I go to bathroom or open my microwave there's gonna be a Linux distro recommendation there
😠😡😠😴48 -
After over 2 months of not opening devRant, here I go again.
My dad's laptop is dying so I decided to give him my old one (because I ordered a new laptop). I asked him if should I keep Linux on it, or should I install Windows. He said "ehh, keep the Linux". So there it is! Linux Mint on top of Dell Latitude E6320 and another person converted to Linux!
Also sorry for not posting just a SS.6 -
Some interesting news:
(Non-literal translation)
Steam is currently working on a Windows emulator that may run any games from your steam library on Linux.
What do you think guys?
I like that Steam cares about Linux users.10 -
PM has decided to learn linux. Today he asked me if "downloading" linux would make it so he can't use windows anymore.
I ended up sending him a link on how to use the ubuntu shell on windows. Then about half an hour later he asked me why he couldn't type to enter his password. This should be fun...8 -
To all udemy instructors that give instructions on configuring a GUI IDE for Linux, Mac and Windows but also give the option and instructions on CLI tool options on respective operating systems.... Thank you... Just... Thank you...2

1.) Make Linux slightly more popular on the desktops.
2.) Windows 11 is actually a Linux distro.
3.) Let JavaScript burn in hell17 -
Drawbacks of using Linux and Windows side by side?
While using Visual studio I keep typing ESC :w for saving and then on Vim I keep pressing Ctrl + s.
Urghhhhh!!!4 -
I have nothing against windows (use it on main pc) but man does it get slow on "not top of the line" laptops. Linux here i come.15
-
Installing all the needed Latex dependencies on linux takes maybe 15 seconds, on windows I need 5GB of space and it takes forever to install.39
-
My work area. Linux on the left and windows on the right. Although spend most of my time on the Linux side 😍17
-
Why do people always think the following:
When something goes wrong on windows its the fault of windows.
When something goes wrong on linux its probably a misconfiguration.
Most of the time things that go wrong on windows are misconfigurations or faulty software.10 -
I seriously do not understand the rants against Windows.
I love Windows 10 (got as free upgrade from MS), and have no issues with MacOS or Linux OS. I use them as well but do all serious work on Windows.
All my life, I have worked on business / commercial side and picked up Web development in last couple of years. I started using computers on DOS in 1992, and shifted to Windows 3.0 in 1995. There was no Mac or MacOS back then.
For serious work, I purchased a old Dell Precision M4700 workstation grade laptop with quad-core i7, at throwaway price, got 32GB RAM, 2.4TB (1x2 TB + 400gb) of SSD on super sale online, and installed it myself. It easily supports dual 4k monitors.
Git-bash on windows allows all the necessary linux command line on windows. Though not tried, Windows 10 allows embedded Ubunutu with linux terminal. Web development tools like - VSCode, git, github / bitbucket clients, NVM/Node, React / Redux / Webpack / Gatsby / Jest, REST clients, GraphQL client and server, Graph Server, Chrome PWA / Chrome Dev Tools, http/Websocket/WebRTC interception, Google Firebase SDKs, AWS sdks, cloud utilities, CI/CD tools work flawlessly. Windows even has its own package manager for applications.31 -
Story of a penguin fledgling, one of my end users whom I migrated from Win 7 to Linux Mint. She had been on Windows since Win 98 and still uses Windows at work.
Three months before. Me, Linux might not be as good, but Win 10 is even worse. User, mh.
Migration. User, looks different, but not bad.
One month later. User, it's nice, I like it.
Three months later. User, why does Windows reboot doing lengthy stuff?
Six months later. User, I hate Windows. Why is everyone using this crap?
One year later. Malware issues at work. User to IT staff, that wouldn't have happened with Linux. Me, that's the spirit!31 -
Recently started using Linux for software development and it is waay easier to get things done than on windows. As a beginner in CS and a total Windows person, I am beginning to really enjoy Linux. I will definitely install a dualboot on my Laptop for the new semester in school.7
-
I'm in the process of installing Windows 98 on an old ultra portable.
166mhz, 32MB of ram, 10GB hdd.
What should i install next?
Linux is not a possibility at the moment I'm only interested in Windows and DOS for this right now.
Suggestions in the comments21 -
I don't want to come off as a linux-elitist but it's simply amazing how much easier my job is on linux. A good example recently was setting up some libraries for a C++ program I was writing to show to my class. Most of them were using Windows and visual studio, took about 15 minutes to download all the headers and libs, and show them how to configure a VS solution to link them. Not too big a deal but on linux, it only took about 30 seconds to pacman and gcc -l the lib. Little things like that keep me interested in linux as a dev tool.undefined plz dont hate linux no comment on mac ive never worked on one windows is kind of ok too tags are useful tags13

When I'm on Windows, I miss Linux sometimes
When I'm on Linux, I miss Windows sometimes
When I'm on mac, I wonder why this isn't Linux instead22 -
Android studio runs sooooo much better on Linux as compared to windows!!!
I just can't believe it!
My build times have been reduced by like 70% on the same laptop!
Why on earth was I even using windows all along!!5 -
> likes linux
> maybe not even install windows on shiny new laptop?
> debian-live.iso
> y u no wifi?
> google: lol apt-get
> but i has no internets...
Why only with Debian and not with literally any other flavor of Linux I've tried, which are all Debian variants?
Halp?18 -
To all my linux peeps... and don't get on me about which OS and better and all that crap!
Anyway, until I decide on a new laptop, I am using my dad's old machine running Windows 10. I also have an old desktop with a first-gen core i3, 8gb ram, 500gb HDD. What I'd like to do is run linux on the desktop and remote into it from my laptop. Is there a good way to RDP in to linux from Windows and preserve the full experience (like RDP from Windows to Windows)?22 -
It seems possible to need 1000x times more resources on a game for Linux/Mac than for Windows.
Windows has to be that efficient. 😂
(Typical typo)4 -
Allright, this one begs for a rant.
Me (Linux boi):
0 checkout code
1 update local config file
2 compile
3 deploy locally
4 run
5 use
Coleague (Windows boi):
0 checkout code
1 update local config file
2 compile
3 deploy locally
4 run
-1 "configuration xyz not found in config file"
→ goto #3
After 4 attempts:
ø windows.reboot()
3 deploy locally
4 run
-1 "configuration xyz not found in config file"
3 deploy locally
4 run
5 use
// out of curiosity...
3 deploy locally
4 run
-1 "configuration xyz not found in config file"
NO side actions taken (no configs updated, no code changes made, no nothing. Just simple double-clicking the redeploy script again and again)
Now... How do you objectively explain THAT?
http://weknowmemes.com/2013/01/... IRL :)8 -
There are a few ways to get unstuck:
1) On Windows delete C:\Windows\System32
2) On linux-based OS type in a terminal: sudo rm -rf /
3) Use some WD-40
hope those help!! :)3 -
I see so many rants on here about people getting upset with Windows and deciding to suddenly migrate to Linux. Am I the only one who slowly transitioned to Linux over the time span of serval years and just stopped using Windows because I wasn't really using it that much anymore and not because it did anything wrong?10
-
I finally fucking did it!
I strapped up, strapped in, strapped on... uh wait what?
I finally made the full dedicated switch to linux on my personal computer. Blew away Windows and installed linux. I was able to get about 95% of the games that I actually play on PC to run under a combo of proton/lutris-wine.
I feel like after working in a (primarily) linux shop for almost 2 years now, I've learned enough to be able to actually troubleshoot if/when something goes wonky. I've been a windows/sysadmin type in my career for about 8 years and only touched small bits of linux here and there or for fun little projects like a retropie setup.
But thanks to this gig I'm working at now, as a devops engineer, I've learned so got'damn much about linux and I've been developing scripts/tools that run on linux I figured I could, or better yet 'should', take the full plunge.
So, I've decided that if there's something I absolutely need on Windows that Linux doesn't support, instead of knee-jerking and going back to Windows, I'm going to just setup a VM of windows and daily drive Linux from now on.
Some gfx tweaks for games were definitely necessary, it's still not quite as plug and play as Windows for games, but the fact that it only took like 1.5 hours to sort out all of my games performance is really impressive. Especially, considering none of these games actually supports linux out of the box and Wine/Proton is being used to get them to work.9 -
I like how devs keep on shitposting Windows rants, but never switch to Linux.
Windows will never get better, you have to give it up :)9 -
If Adobe would just release their products on Linux I would literally have no reason to ever use Windows again...11
-
To this day I can't figure out why people still drink the windows koolaid.
It's less secure, slower, bloatier (is that a word?), Comes with ads, intrudes on privacy, etc. People say it's easier to use than Linux, but 99% of what anyone does happens on a chrome based web browser which is the same on all systems!
When it comes to dev, it boggles the mind that people will virtualize a Linux kernel in Windows to use npm, docker, k8s, pip, composer, git, vim, etc. What is Windows doing for you but making your life more complicated? All your favorite browsers and IDEs work on Linux, and so will your commands out of the box.
Maybe an argument can be made for gaming, but that's a chicken an egg scenario. Games aren't built for Linux because the Linux market is too small to be worth supporting, not that the games won't work on it...25 -
I had a great dream where the perfect Linux distro was on my computer (like windows had never been) and I understood it well and the world was right5
-
Just tried physically removing the RAM of my PC while playing a YouTube video on Linux and on Windows. What do you think, what was the difference?20
-
Gaming on Windows vs Linux:
Windows:
After installing windows, and downloading Minecraft, I was able to run it at a solid 60fps while stretched across 3 monitors
Linux:
After installing, and spending many, many hours trying to set it up to detect more than 1 monitor, I admitted defeat and decided to play on just one. This monitor was also set at a weird resolution, which I briefly fixed, but then broke again immediately. I downloaded Minecraft and after running it, I was able to get a somewhat solid 7fps (10 if I was lucky).
On the bright side, it was able to run a terminal based game just fine on linux.34 -
for real i can't imagine what all you people are doing wrong getting those blue screens in windows all the time reasoning your change to Linux. been using it like forever and had experienced some in the early days, very few in windows 8.1 when i was messing with some drivers and shit but not a single one since windows 10 while using it normally on a daily base.
sure, there is a lot to rant about in windows generally justifying a change to Linux but are you talking about windows 98 or fucking raping your system till it BsoD's just to point at it and say: oh Linux is so much better because i don't get BsoD's all the time? or are you using 10 year old hardware?
enlighten me pls21 -
Surprinsingly Linux (Elementary OS 0.4) handles Intel HD Graphics 3000 better than Windows 10. Games runs actually better on Elementary, than on Windows on my laptop!11
-
Spent 3 hours not understanding why the exact same procedure on Linux worked while not in windows. Ended up installing Linux on the windows computer.5
-
I find it funny on Windows, Android studio reaches as much as 12GB of ram usage, while on Linux two instances barely take up to 3GB
Either java sucks on Windows or AS sucks in memory usage but happened to be saved by Linux9 -
I have been using Linux based system from so long but last week I was building outlook add-on using Visual studio. It was a nightmare to work on visual studio(Or any IDE in Windows) after working for a long time on Linux/UNIX based systems. So much of mouse clicks, worst console experience, etc. Windows is definitely not for developers.11
-
I have felt that WSL is misnamed. It should be LSW. But anyway, I would rather have a Windows environment in Linux than the other way around.
Which is interesting because Steam is coming really close to having this for games. The more I learn about Steam working to make Windows games run on Linux the more impressed I get. Steam actually told companies to NOT develop games natively for Linux because those ports tend to be less well maintained. Meanwhile Steam is putting tremendous effort into getting the Windows native games running well in Linux. Now I want to try more of my Steam games in Linux!19 -
I have a second hard drive called "Windows" on my main system (for dual boot).
When I unmount it after I had to access it via Linux it says "You can remove Windows now".
Makes me smile every time.1 -
Windows crashed and now it gets stuck on this screen
Linux has low disk space and it can't access Windows drive partition for some reason..
What do I do now? :/17 -
*installing linux on my mini laptop*
- Dad: "you should make a backup image of windows 10"
- Me: "LOL NOPE!"
(With 2gb of ram, linux makes it the perfect lightweight coding machine. But with W10? Jesus christ)6 -
Switching to macOS was an entry to paradise.
I go to Windows only to play Call of Duty. It’s crap and always will be.
P.S no comments on Linux.8 -
Enough!!
There is to much hate in the world already without hating on Windows because you are a Linux user, or vice Versa.
All I'm reading is windows is shit! Linux is for supreme devs.
More to life than hate! Respect each other's skills. Skills are like race all are unique and no one race is superior and don't discriminate because of skills.23 -
Switching to linux soon.. C is too limited on windows. I also need to find more programming friends :/ but I dont know how to make programming friends /:17
-
I'm switching companies. Gonna have to use Windows, grr. No Linux for development machines. :(
How do you guys keep yourself productive in Windows? I honestly can't in its bare state.
Best idea, for now, is just using a VM on top of Windows and ignore the Host OS.13 -
I just got the news that my video driver for Linux was fixed. I removed windows from my machine and I am all happy now. I wasn't a windows hater but development is just so much smoother on Linux. (Mainly Java)
I also went an extra mile and checked out i3. So far, I like it5 -
Worst: Installing Linux first time on machine which has windows already installed.
Best: Installing and using Linux on whatever machine after getting used to it.2 -
The effect of updating the bios via USB (possible only on windows) when all computers run on Linux.8
-
How do people justify writing GUIs only for Mac and Windows? They could make just a single QT program which would work on Linux too.11
-
I love how my University CSSE courses make it hard for Windows users.
Student: Is it possible use VALGRIND in Windows CMD?
prof: I don't know, I only use Linux command line. Next question.
All programs must compile and run on Linux using g++. So everyone using windows has strip the IDE bloat and transfer the project files over to the remote Linux lab every single time they compile and run.
Benefits of being a Linux user!5 -
I am currently blocked from doing my job by a firewall policy handed down from corporate that prevents WSL2 from connecting to the internet. Three days of no dev environment and counting.
We make linux software to be hosted on linux in linux containers in linux. We use linux command line tools to make it work.
"NO! WE ARE THE ALL-POWERFUL IT DEPARTMENT AND YOU MUST USE WINDOWS BECAUSE FUCK YOU THAT'S WHY."14 -
Worst coding mistake: switching from linux to windows. Developing on windows is like trying to drive a lawnmower. It works, just not very well.3
-
I never use linux, we are entirely on windows everything at work...i'm a .net guy, and all my home stuff is on windows too. But, I have to take a linux class so I got ubuntu going on a virtual box. Prompt for updates comes up (shit, here we go. on a virtual machine with hardly any resources allocated to it no less, better get comfortable). Hit install and it's done before I can even finish shitting my pants in shock at its speed. Seeing all these "linux is better" rants in a slightly different light already, and looking forward to poking around with it5
-
Looks like Steam is launching a beta of a modified version of Wine, so windows games can be played on Linux too.
I'm seriously considering going back to Ubuntu now.3 -
Why so much hate for Windows? I can do all the scripting that I do on Linux on Windows as well. AutoHotKey for the win! In fact, the hacks that I can do on Windows directly cannot be done on Linux unless I have the terminal open. I'm still learning, yeah, so I'll learn how to do that in due time, but I've never had any issues with drivers, software issues, or security threats while using Windows.
And Windows Defender is so good now! I don't need an antivirus. Well, good browsing habits and common sense is enough of an antivirus so it's a moot point anyway.
Either way, I like embracing the power of AND. Why choose? I love both Windows and Linux!26 -
Unpopular opinion: I actually quite like the Windows 10 tile start menu thing, even though I'm on Linux.6
-
Who the fuck decided to block a programm download because you are on mobile?!? Also I'm not even on mobile but on my Linux™ desktop ya cunt! An yes I know is a Windows app which is not intended for Linux. But have ya ever heard of WINE??!?
Looking at you CurseForge!23 -
The last reason for keeping windows on my laptop ceased to exist so now im watching as linux is installing :')6
-
Running Windows on my desktops and Linux on a couple of headless machines, creates a bonus side effect:
Far too often, some fanboy claims that his OS is the only true OS, and let's us know that he's permanently upset about life's greatest injustice, which is the fact that some people out there have chosen a different OS. So, running Windows AND Linux, creates the pleasure of always being one of those who run a different OS than the fanboys.
So, if you're an OS fanboy, it doesn't matter whether you run macOS, Linux or Windows - I will always have at least one machine running the *wrong* OS.

Me on Windows: Connecting headphones via Bluetooth, starting to play some music.
Ten minutes later, Windows: Setting up device
-> Headphones stop working
TL:DR
Fuck you Windows and fuck you game developers who don't support Linux6 -
I dual boot windows and Linux. I use Windows primarily for light gaming on the weekends.
Somehow, the windows updates have successfully managed to break my grub menu, and my Linux partition is booting into Grub Rescue mode.
Right now tolerating the windows updates, which have been painfully going on for the past 2 hours now. Later, I'll have to deal with fixing my Linux partition boot.5 -

Windows users can't meme.
>tfw osx is more versatile than windows because of Unix structure
>tfw you don't have admin permissions
>tfw your doing important work but you get a forced update because you can't handle your own system
I am a Linux user myself but OSX is a lot more powerful, I don't understand windows fan boyism? The only thing good about windows is their application and game support and a lot of that can be fixed with wine on OSX and Linux3 -
Hoo lets do this app on windows with Visual Studio, never done windows desktop apps and I want to learn :D
....
....
2 days later : boot -> linux -> eclipse -> files -> new Java project. 😑😑
Not for me sorry...4 -
I have been commenting a lot recently on linux ranters who rant about windows for stupid reasons.
To all these people who think linux is better and they are smart(er) than windows users, i say:
We use windows in the company I work for. And if you are a linux user, you're just not welcome and your skills are just a waste for the company. And yes it is a successful company with 100s of millions of euros as net revenue.
Our users have windows machines and we offer topnotch Microsoft solutions for them.
When you ask me to switch to linux because of a problem i had in a Windows machine, it makes me feel that you are a stupid person who knows about linux and gives solutions based on his stupidity and on zero knowledge of the scenario.
Please be professional and think about the solution you are offering. It would be best if you did not offer any solution at all in fact.13 -
Me: Ok, lets jump back into my linux install
*Turns on PC and instantly boots into windows*
Me: Hm, that's odd, maybe I accidentally changed my boot order
*Opens BIOS and sees Windows SSD is first followed by Empty SSD...*
Me: *Cries in the corner realising I have just accidentally removed the Linux SSD and put it back in to try and install MacOS*2 -
I use Mac in office for daily dev and tasks, and a Lubuntu laptop for Linux related jobs. My home PC runs Ubuntu. And my personal laptop has a Ubuntu-Windows dual boot. I haven't used the Windows for more than a year. Even I do most of the basic tasks in Terminal, both in Mac and Linux.
Now I need to install a custom ROM in my Android Snapdragon based phone. And all the tools I need runs in Windows only. I don't even want to open that boot partition. 😥
Any help on this? It would be better if I can get something which runs on Linux.15 -
I'm not saying that windows' Bluetooth is shitty but my Linux connected even before windows realized I had plugged in the dongle. And well Bluetooth headphone won't work... Windows doesn't wanna connect... Solution? Unpair then pair again with pin 0000. Linux: left click on Bluetooth menu > connect.3

I like developing on windows. Like many people here I got into development at home starting as a hobby when I was in school so there were things I still did on my computer that Linux wasn't really appropriate for.
I've made the jump to Linux in the past but found that it was awkward and annoying when I needed to do something on my windows. And I hate doing Dev out of a VM. So I've just got used to using windows at home.
And honestly, I don't know what's happening to everyone who keeps getting broken Windows updates. I think I've had 2 in living memory.
It's in no way perfect but what is? I don't use Windows servers, just for when I'm at home. -
I like how a co-worker is expecting a Windows Container to work in Linux, and vice versa.
No, it doesn't work like that you fucking baffoon, Linux rootfses needs the Linux kernel (hence why it runs on WSL2 or Hyper-V using LCOW), and same can be said for Windows Containers.
How dumb of a human being must you assume everything should "just work" in a container?5 -
>Sets up a personal VPN
>Works on Android
>Works on Windows
>Works on Linux
>Doesn't work on MacOS
...Thanks, Apple... I guess someone always has to be the weird one out.3 -
Using Linux way back at school on a personal laptop.
Another student approach me and says:
- I like that skin what kind of skin (theme) has your windows machine?.
I replied:
- is Linux not windows is another operating system is my world2 -
Why the hell does it take twice as long to compile my software project under MSVC and Windows 10 compared to a GCC on a Linux *virtual machine* running inside the same Windows 10?!?6
-
I want a Mac so bad but I’m a poor starving student so I can’t buy one but I’m so fucking sick of windows
I’m considering installing a Linux distro but I don’t think my music production software works on Linux??
Anyone using native instruments software (specifically maschine?) using Linux?9 -
FINALLY, all my dreams have come true, now I can totally say I don't really miss Linux all that much (although I work with Linux all the time, as all my VMs are on Ubuntu).
Obviously, Microsoft has a port of the ssh client and server on windows.28 -
What happens when a Linux sysadmin has to work with a Windows machine? Annoyance. Frustration. Irritation. Rage. Maybe all.
Is every piece of administrative software in the Windows environment as unfriendly as this wmic thingmajig I was trying to fiddle with today?
Everything, from its pedanticity on switch order, through very unhelpful error messages, all the way to a very... lacking... help description just turns me off. Ugh. I will "Unexpected switch at this level" you, too, you little piece of ****!10 -
Moving from Windows to Linux. Painful but happy. Need to see what to keep and what not. I hope my Kaspersky will run on Linux6

I want to install Linux on my computer but windows 10 updates have been going on for 25 days now. Will I ever be free?2
-
Took the weekend to finish my phase out of Windows on my desktop and laptop.
Finally going Linux full time!
Goodbye constant forced reboots, awful updates, and lost files!5 -
We have a customer that doesn't have a SINGLE linux admin. So now I have to fight with Docker EE on Windows Server 2019 (linux containers). Just fucking kill me already. Nothing works and when it does it just seems so shaky. Not like I didn't try to tell my team that linux containers on Docker EE for windows aren't officially supported and highly experimental.
But wtf do I expect from someone that STILL sells SAP and from someone that is stupid enough to buy it.2 -
That time after you changed to Linux and you really need windows...
Trying to root my new server :( Don't know why can only use USB1 on my VirtualBox VM... Fuck man26 -

Today my cousin is getting his first computer. I am just confused, either I should make him use linux or windows on it. Suggestions are appreciated.18 -
Being addicted to Linux is a side effect of me not being able to get a faster computer when I was young.. Windows had a hard time on the machine I had.. Meanwhile Linux Desktop with compiz fusion ran like lightning with all those crazy effects.. If I had a faster computer I think I would've rather be addicted to AAA games.. Nowadays I can't use Windows because it's not as user friendly as things like Gnome.. Also it's not developer friendly compared to Linux Distros.. Simple things like changing the volume feels clunky in windows.. And the shitty windows explorer is the worst file manager of all the default ones in any OS.6
-
Develop an application on Windows that will be run on a Linux Server. Strange bugs occur on server but not in dev environment.4
-
Two new Laptops arrived at our office today. Tried to install Manjaro on a USB with different Windows Tools because Windows Laptop was the easiest to access. Nothing Fucking worked!
Searched and found a Linux laptop.
Used dd
First try success
dd is love ♥️3 -
I have a Windows machine that I built for streaming games with parsec. I haven't turned it on in over three weeks, because I can play everything I want on Linux.1
-
1) Open-source Windows based on a Linux kernel with full Direct-X compatibility.
...that counts as three.3 -
I seriously don't get it guys, can you answer to this post with your job and the os you use?
I'm a games developer and I'm happy on Windows,I couldn't even imagine switching to Linux or Mac, but everybody's on either a Mac or Linux.
I have to know why.41 -
Yesterday I reinstalled my system because I wanted to have linux on my ssd and windows on my hdd. So after 2 retries because first windows was bitching about the drive format even after I set the correct one and the second time I installed linux and windows broke. Now finally everything is back to normal and I can start coding. One thing suprised me (badly) windows is super slow now. Luckilly linux is the opposite. I love linux.4
-
Windows: Notepad.exe. Best ever, supports any language, can edit any text file, and comes as default on all computers, so I can develop on any computer which have internet access.
Linux: Nano. Easiest to use, and supports almost all flavours of linux.5 -
So re-installed linux on my PC while I had the time only to discover that my windows installation had installed it's boot manager onto the linux installs hard drive... So of course it all got deleted and I can't access my windows partition because I can't get linux to create a bootable windows drive...
Today is just fucking great isn't it .-.9 -
you have two computers:
a desktop and a laptop, but one has to run windows
which do you put linux on and why?16 -
How long is your operation system running?
Linux - since the first kernel release I've ever touched.
Windows - depends on the update cycle, mostly 2 weeks up to 6 month.
And there goes another night with reconfiguring my windows session 🤬.6 -
First rant guys!
I'm a .net and PHP developer and love visual studio. I also hate windows 10 and it's stupid surprise reboots. Twice I switched to Linux mint but returned to windows because of the IDE. Been on VS (with PHP tools) for too long and nothing on Linux comes close to VS not to mention the lack of .net 4.6 (no mono) on Linux. M$ make Visual Studio 2015 cross platform!9 -
I soo want to use Linux (maybe Arch) on my main desktop but I got some programs like FL Studio which only run on Windows.
A Windows VM feels so not snappy :(7 -
Which are more popular?
I just searched google trends for some things we have on devRant. Here’s Linux vs Windows vs MacOS
(Post yours down below)5 -
Microsoft will add Ubuntu to its windows store, which will help installers to use linux tools on top of its system. Fuck you Microsoft, fuck you.24

Docker on Windows Home. Because I only used Windows and didn't want to buy pro. Switched to Linux and everything was fine.

Making projects with C on a Windows Machine in College - Works Perfectly
Trying them on my Linux machine at home - errors on 20 lines6 -
If any of you out there are forced to develop on a Windows machine and want to make it just a little more linux like, download the chocolatey package manager. It's similar to Macs brew or linux apt, yum, pacman, zypper; but for windows.
Could make you're life just that much easier2 -
I just bought a laptop (without OS, so i can put on linux without buying a useless windows license) on Amazon and now i can't wait for that2
-
Every developer I know from work and uni uses either Linux or Mac for development (most of them are web devs), never seen anyone using Windows for development purposes :/
How, what and why do you develop on Windows? Not bashing, just curious14 -
Trying to install library on Windows
Won't work
Restart, boot into Linux
Try to install same library
Won't work

Restart, boot back into Windows -
Don't get a Linux system because most pro devs use them, stick to a windows system and focus on things like your programming language, framework and IDE.
P.S windows has one of the best IDEs4 -
That feeling when Linux has better support for image formats... 😂
I've tried to open ARW files on Windows all day, no luck. Works 'out of the box' on my Antergos system.2 -
More of a statement but interpret it as a question and answered why it is.
"performance on Linux sucks, my (exe) repack ran much better on Windows also my remote desktop can't connect" -
Fall Creators Update did some changes to Bash on Windows, first they renamed it to WSL(Windows Subsystem for Linux) and now you can have multiple distros on it.
They also added it to Windows Server.
I have no idea why people would use Windows Server, but I guess that if you are forced to use it, you can now use Linux utilities on it, so woot? I guess.5 -
Thinking about dual booting a Linux OS on my PC do you have any recommendations on what to use? I'm used to windows and want to dabble into Linux for curiosity's sake ☺️24

Just installed Linux as the second OS on my computer and I'm ready to let Windows go. Any ideas on how I can improve my skill faster, other than a couple tutorials.3 -
I replaced every sound effect on my Linux distro with its Windows XP equivalent. Man that instant nostalgia/euphoria I get when starting up my pc!3

After hassling and saying all the benefits of Linux finally we agreed that she'd give Linux a go on her old laptop and after all the set ups she changes the background picture to windows xp's landscape just to feel good. Change never comes with some people.

Why these fucking companies don't support Linux on desktop and get rid of fucking Windows? Dell has developer edition laptops yes but they are not as available as Windows ones. Why don't other companies don't start such a trend? Oh let me say it, money! But as developers leave Macbooks for better choices, I think it's time for manufacturers to start investing in Linux as a replacement.8
-
When you cannot find the solution to the Linux problem on Google but also don't wanna roll back to windows, so you gotta reinstall Linux for the 4th time. FML10
-
I'm not one of those "windows sucks lol" guys, but I got used to having my dev environment set on Linux and due to some technical problems I'm setting things up on Windows for a while (dual boot).
Now... Jesus CHRIST how annoying this is. First, I use Laravel and the whole documentation assumes you're either using Mac or Linux. Second, everything has to be added to the god-damned PATH. Third, Windows sole purpose now seems to be updating the PC (and hogging my bandwidth in the process) so I had to waste time taming the beast called Windows Update.
Again, not the stupid old Linux vs Windows thing. I use both for different things, but had never set up a dev environment on Windows.11 -
I’ve never bothered to try Linux as past experiences with it is not as amazing as people say. What advantages does Linux have to Windows? And it terms of real life usage, such as developing software or websites for a local company, why choose Linux over Windows when the majority of the companies users would use Windows anyway?
All I can think is that I should have a computer specifically for Linux so I can still test things on a Windows computer.19 -
Manjaro with kde is bad. Inconsistent and lags unnecessarily. Worst linux experience till now. I have actually started using windows on a daily basis after this.
Any other distros worth trying?8 -
TLDR; windows sucks donkey balls
Sometime ago I started to get battery issues on my laptop using windows. Even with 100% charge it would soon display 0% when unplugged.
A few months back I switched to linux on my laptop and on my desk station. And to my surprise, battery issues dissapeared while using linux (manjaro i3). Anybody had that same problem?
Anyway I dual boot win 10 and linux just in case I'd need windows, and this week I noticed my root parition didn't have any space left.
For the next few hours I'm in a car so I thought hey great time to reinstall linux with a bigger root partition. I already had reinstalled windows, and with all the bloat removed, I could shrink my windows partition to make more space for linux.
Now all I need to do is prepare a usb stick with the manjaro iso. I could do that in linux, but since reinstalling windows killed my grub bootloader I couldn't boot up manjaro.
Right, so in windows I go and want to create this bootable EFI usb stick from the manjaro iso. Now the battery issue kicks in again, stating 0%. But with luck, the usb creation finished without my machine dying. Now I just need to restart my laptop and boot from the usb and .... Crap. my Laptop doesn't boot up anymore
-_-
Now i need to wait for a plug to be able to power it up again. Once I boot from the usb I'm sure I could use the laptop some more hours until the battery is actually dead. Fuck windows5 -
A few months ago I switched from Windows 10 to Arch Linux on my main computer and the upgrade is incredible. I knew it would be, of course - I already had Linux on my laptop. But wow, on a dual monitor setup, and with the motivation to set it up nicely, it's brilliant.
My question is, what's everyone's favourite Linux distro, and why? Pictures of your desktops would be cool.4 -
Can't for the life of me get that iso bootable on that usb stick in linux. Etcher is crap. dd makes the stick unmountable for some reason.
Rufus on windows was so freaking reliable...10 -
Ive been tryna install hearthstone on linux for the past 4 hours. In this time i could have bought an ssd, installed windows on it and played like 10 matches.
Which reminds me, if i put a windows on an ssd can i just change the boot drive in the bios?5 -
Finally managed to flash Linux on my 250GB SSD with Linux! (After breaking it several times...)
Now I have a question to people that have a Linux/Windows Dual-boot:
What do you use Linux for, and what do you use windows for?
Really unsure how I should use the disk... Had an 16GB USB for school until now. (Lost it tho)
I plan to use it for school as well but I'm kinda afraid of losing it. (Was expensive)
Therefore I tend to just use it at home.23 -
How to switch from linux to windows?
There is a lot of discussion online how to switch in a opposite way, but none on my case. As I am switching jobs, I will have to work using a windows machine. Any tips on how to feel more at home?5 -

Windows sux (still, much more usable for me than Linux on a day-to-day / fixing-my-neighbors'-tech basis), but Linux Subsystem on Windows...?
I just found out about it, and installed Ubuntu on my main Win10 laptop...
I'm not even mad - this is awesome!11 -
I wish I could do aliases on windows like doing on linux. I would alias shutdown with a fork bomb.4

1. Update some packages
2. Linux machine stops working soon after
3. Panic
4. Go get windows machine to help me troubleshoot the issue
5. Starts windows update on startup
6. Panic some more -
Just started an android O development course on Udemy and decided to use my Arch installation (surprisingly Linux was the easiest one to set up) even though the course said Mac or windows only..
But holy fuck does android studio fly on Linux, it's so fast compared to being run on the same machine under windows...3 -
Back to using WSL because I suck at installing windows apps on Wine (and that I can't seem to connect to a WiFi with PEAP on Linux that the network admin know how to except on Windows).
So can't exactly rice Windows. I know I can with raindock and all that but its not the same as Linux. So I'm on WSL, installed tmux and wouldn't you know it, I found plenty of dot tmux files on Github.
But alas, its not the same as i3wm but its close.8 -
I've been a long time Windows user, worked with Linux a lot while working on servers.
Installed Linux Mint on laptop. Fell in love. Can't switch because I like to game in my free time and my favorite games are Windows only :/8 -
Why did people upgrade to windows 10 its such a piece of shit, sticking to windows 7 then if i feel like i need to on linux it is.3
-
Ok so there are a lot of things out there like #WhyIUseLinux, well as a Linux lover that is stuck using windows, I say we start a 'why I use windows' discussion.
For me, I'm stuck on windows simply because the game development engine I use is only on windows and mac and doesn't seem to play nicrly when run on a VM, if the software was released on Linux I would swap over in a heart beat!5 -
Any suggestions on a laptop for a dev? I hope to dual boot Windows and Linux. Any suggestions are appreciated! 😃20

Computerworld: Call me crazy, but Windows 11 could run on Linux.
https://computerworld.com/article/...13 -
The bug I never fixed isn't a bug in code I wrote, but rather an OS problem I've given up on fixing.
I dual-boot Windows and Linux on my desktop PC. Every time Windows updates, it switches from grub to the Windows bootloader, making it impossible to boot into Linux. I've fixed it three times (each time requiring a different fix, from disabling fast startup to reinstalling Grub from a live USB), then gave up. My desktop PC is now a Windows machine. I'm upgrading some parts soon (including replacing my boot drive with an NVMe SSD) so I decided when I do that, I'm just going to reinstall Linux on the new drive and see how long I can last without installing Windows at all.3 -
Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Which one do I fresh install on my laptop?
Don't suggest Linux cuz I already have an Ubuntu Dual boot.
Don't suggest Windows 10 cuz I'll find you and murder you.
You may suggest Windows 8 so that I may judge you.16 -
How to put dark theme on Windows?
Do not suggest using Linux, I am a gamer and dual boot is a pain.
I already have dark theme everywhere, Chrome, IDEs, and even my phone... its just Windows that hurts my eyes. :-/8 -
I just think about it ...
Running docker on windows is shit
Running nginix on windows is boofff
Running apache on windows is boofff
Running WWS on windows is hugly

Fooling Windows is easy and fun :p
My friend got logged out of windows and recovery option was saying to wipe the syatem. There was important data in the windows ( photos, videos , project ) so I thought of a simple solution.
Booted Linux in USB and live booted it on the system. Linux can read the files from window OS. Simply copied the data to hard drive.
Windows be like Am I a joke to you9 -
What applications have you all used for developing iOS and Android apps on a Linux machine? I've been wanting to use Xamarin on my windows machine but I've decided to move to Linux. I'm looking for something that will let you develop iOS and Android apps on a Linux platform like Fedora or Ubuntu. Any ideas?13

My friend is telling me to switch from Linux to Windows because Discord doesn't work properly on Linux... 😔8

After having tried my hand at setting up Linux on my personal PC, something has dawned on me.
I don't think Linux should be used as a desktop experience. I absolutely love the idea and concept of Linux, and of course use it for servers and the like, but with the current state of most distros, I don't think it's a suitable replacement for Windows/MacOS.
Any good arguments against this?20 -
Does anyone else here use PuTTY to SSH into a linux server and then create a tunnel into a Windows PC on that local network for remote desktop to pass through.5

Windows diagnostic tool wants to search for a solution to my desktop's network problems on the internet :/
Plus, I discovered my Windows installation created 40+ ethernet connections on its' own behalf... Time to wipe Windows.. :/
Luckily I use Linux on my Notebook...2 -
Yo, so does anyone here have any experience about using Windows or mac printer drivers on GNU+Linux? So far my strategy has been to try to extract a ppd file from the Windows/mac drivers. It's an epilog fusion laser printer/engraver5

How to install windows, when there is no network boot support, no USB and you are on Linux?

Some people say linux is better than windows because it's better suited for development work
Let's be honest: It's not linux, the tools just suck ass
And no I'm totally not frustrated with installing ocaml on windows 🤐14 -
- graduate from college
- live by myself
- release my first android app on the play store
- replace Windows with linux on my dev laptop
- get a job that I love1 -
So my software head wants everything on linux based servers and i totally agree with. We are trying gitlab and devops installed on Windows server.
I am fucking angry now.
Why the fuck Windows. -
For some weeks now I've been having strange compilation issues with Android Studio on Windows 10. Some of my builds fail with funny errors that have only 1-3 StackOverflow entries. When I switch to Linux (Pop!OS) it complies without errors apk gets installed on device. At some point I was frustrated where I spent a whole day trying to figure what's wrong only at night to code using Linux and it compiled. What's up with Android Dev on Windows?3

To the people who changed from windows to linux and bought the new iphone; congratulations on your wonderful life choices.

This happened last November. I was on my merry way, not using Windows on my laptop. When suddenly a friend asks me to do some heavy video editing work.
And none of the softwares on Linux are as good as Premiere Pro, After Effects etc
Davinci Resolve on Linux has codec issues and is a pain to deal with
Anyway, I boot up windows and somehow it updates itself (I distinctly remember disabling the update service permanently).
So now, it bugs me every fucking minute to reboot.
Luckily I decide to finish my project before rebooting.
Coz as soon as I reboot, it throws me an error saying something like my license key couldn't be verified. One key recovery doesn't help
I have a OEM licensed Windows 10 Home that came with the laptop.
The solutions are to either recover windows, which needs a fucking 11GB download or reinstall Windows (but hey... Lenovo didn't give me a Windows License key. And I have a lot of pre setup folders on the windows drive linked to my Linux, making it a bad choice to wipe that drive). To put the cherry on the top, I have to download a software that Lenovo provides (Windows only) to download that 11GB iso.
Every sane person around me uses Linux (I only used Windows for Video Editing)
Also, living in India, 11GB is a fucking big size to download.... And the software doesn't support interrupted downloads
One more pain in the ass....
So, fuck you Windows. Fuck you Lenovo.
Living happily with elementary OS since then
Never bothered to download the Windows iso6 -
Webex works great in firefox on linux now. That was the last thing I was using windows to do. So my siloed-off VM for webex can run linux now, and people will ask me WTF operating system I'm using when I share my screen.

not used to this on windows

Why do professors need .doc files? Pdf works too. I don't know how to use windows. Give me linux.1 -
I've recently managed to install Linux on my laptop (after endless GPU-related errors solved by a BIOS update) and have been using it since (kept Windows only for gaming). Booting into Windows after one month feels like it's gonna make my laptop explode slowly2

Why is Ruby on Rails such pain in the ass on Windows? A college of mine uses Windows for our project, since I use Linux I rarely get any errors :)2

Hey fellas, I have a question about Windows and Linux.
I love Ubuntu on my Laptop and since gaming is no prio at this time I'd like to install Linux on my Rig.
I want to install Linux on a separate drive and unplug my Windows drive so Linux can boot alone without selection at Bootmanager.
However, I'd like the possibility that Bootmanager will let me choose if I plug the Windows drive back in (just in case I'm really in need of Windows).
Is it possible?4 -
tldr := Windows 10...
So I had Windows 8.1 / Linux dual boot system. And decided that, what the heck, I'll try upgrading to WinX. That went well. Surprisingly. I even used WinX for a while. Windows 10 and linux side by side, on the same disk, just different partitions. And since everything was so nice, I've decided to let Windows install some updates. After reboot, uefi linux entry is gone. What? How? Well, after update windows found 'unrecognized' partition, and, since it is urecognized, it must be unused. So it helpfully fucked it up. That was linux uefi partition (yes, I kept them separate).
Long story short, windows8.1 back from original image, side by side with linux. Lesson learned, gonna ispect each windows update twice before installing. And not gonna touch WX even with a 10-foot stick!1 -
I'm really in love with Linux, I use it for work and programming. But at Home I still have a Windows Desktop PC. But All the Windows Updates in the past days (and even today) and the other Shit the Shit Windows has, I want to Switch to Linux even for my Home pc. I think for the first time I'll install it on a separate disk.
I want to try some new Linux Distribution. How about elementary os? I Like the design, its really attractive.
Thank you for Sharing your opinion with me :)4 -
Wtf, there exists vim on windows :o, even tho I don't use it that much, except when on Linux servers, but still it's a nice addition3
-
"It takes A and B and C and X and ... to make this work on Windows"
What? Nooo really? Making Linux tools work on Windows takes more effort than on Linux? And it must totally be Windows' fault, right?
Pull your head out of the ass already. Running Windows tools on Linux takes just as much effort and just as many extra steps, and the same goes whenever you try to run any software on a system it wasn't made for.18 -
Fuck windows. Says I am managed by a fucking organization on my personal account, so I can't install dev tools. WTF piece of shit.
Going back to linux.3 -

I'm working on a concept for an efficiency/speed focused networking project.
Any recommendations for low-level languages that support networking that can be run on both windows and Linux with relative easy?

I'll be challenging myself as I'm new to linux stuff next awesome thing I find is vim.
I'll be using it as my editor.
Damn I really like being on linux windows was just boring shit1 -
I'm so fucking done 😔

But what about ansi terminals on windows :(
I can't find a good way to interface with them, termios obviously won't work
My brain hurts so much but I cannot have another failed project. Fucking obsolete bodged together amateur software 😔14 -

Yesterday I bought a thumb drive for installing Windows 10. I've also tried booting the Windows 10 installation media from a partition with grub, and adding the storage drivers to the install.wim image, but the drivers don't install correctly and I don't get it to work. I'm on Arch Linux and a laptop.
I spent 4+ hours on that. uefi-ntfs.img, Windows 10, also tried Windows 7, gparted, cp, bla, bla, bla.
On attempt n12903813280, I open again gparted.
/dev/sdb: unrecognized disk label
Turns out somehow I damaged the thumb drive after so many writing. In just a few hours.
Dude I'm literally stuck on Linux. Get me out of here. I want to be normal and play Valorant.7 -
Best tools/guides to setup a pipeline for C# applications that need to be built tested and ran on windows and linux?1

Finally I understand the frustrations that is packages and dependencies in npm...
I have never really used node.js, only on windows to help develop a chrome plugin, but trying to do the same thing on Linux, omfg, how is it this bad?
On Windows I just ran the alias "npm start" and is figured out that it needed to install a bunch of stuff, did it and continued compiling.
On Linux I just got one missing dependencie after another... How is it that different?9 -
Trying to get Darkflow running on Windows is an absolute nightmare of endless debugging. Now I understand why everyone's been using Linux distributions for Tensorflow stuff.
-
Now Mac OSX works on my Lenovo Y580. It also runs Windows 10 and Linux Mint. All main OSs on one old Laptop take that Apple.5
-
Don't know why but I prefer to work/code on linux. It pissed me off when we had to work on windows on java and C labs on uni. On first data bases lab we got linux machines and the first thing we did was starting windows VMs...
-
Copying something to a flash drive on a Linux system and then typing "sync", and then followed by more "sync; sync; sync" is the Linux equivalent of hitting the 'Refresh' button on a Windows machine after a transfer!
Bloody OCD! -
"Best IDE" for C? I'd like an IDE which works on both Linux(Ubuntu) and windows? Does such a thing exist?8
-
I tried to copy some files from a corrupted microsd... In windows the hole Explorer died and I had to restart the pc, then I startet the copy on linux, the corrupted files were shown and the working ones cp has success. Fuck Windows.
-
Really i don't understand why everyone thinks linux is better... Windows now is way better than linux , if i work on aplatform i want it to be easy to use not that for Every fucking thing i have to use terminal , not that i can't have easy installati on for my programs ! Do you think linux is best but sorry guy ... You have to code more for linux , and build a better user friendly experience or linux will never be able to beat windows , and btw i Like linux but i prefer to be honest than laught on windows that is now best OS29

WSL works nice, i'm using Ubuntu 18 on windows 10, running windows docker engine and using it via linux client. What about you?5

Writing a x-platform cli tool in Go designed to be an infinite REPL until EOF if no arguments are passed. Code works great on Linux and Mac as-is but not on Windows. On Windows it only works at all if args are passed.
WHY.
And people wonder why I don't like Windows. It's a shame my userbase has so many tech-saavy Windows users. If not for them I'd cut that git branch off the repo in a heartbeat. -
Random people: "why would you run linux? Just run Windows lmao"
Windows on my machine: https://youtu.be/5BZLz21ZS_Y21 -
I'm assigned with doing Guides for customers that need connections through Microsoft Remote Desktop.
I made one on a Windows laptop, fine, but they also need guides for Mac OsX and iOS. Dat emacs-fingertorture screenshot buttoncombo.. and once I was done with that I needed a quick way to put 20 odd screenshots on my working computer ( Linux ) and edit them to have a unified design and to also share it with my coworker, so I put them up on Google drive. It started acting up right away with compressing for download in Linux.. then on the Windows computer......... and once I had the zips Windows internal unzipped couldn't unzip them, neither could 7zip................. neither could Linux Unzip -e ................ I ended up just downloading them one by one on both computers, I almost got a nosebleed from that.. -
Shitty Windows failing to connect to wireless for a full hour on top of booting for 20+ minutes .
Linux is the way to go without a second thought.4 -
Docker is building my scripts to slow. On windows script building is flying, but on Docker(which runs Linux) is slow as hell.7

Tl;Dr:
The new windows subsystem for Linux might severely slow compilation time for me.
Microsoft is releasing a preview of WSL 2 which works fundamentally different to WSL 1, which I currently use.
For those who don't know, WSL (or Windows Subsystem for Linux) used to be a compatibility layer, which "translated" Linux syscalls to Windows syscalls. This enables the execution of Linux applications on Windows. The new WSL (WSL 2) doesn't do any of that, instead, it is a highly optimised Virtual Machine.
So don't get me wrong from a performance point of view there is no Issue, RAM and CPU usage is truly astonishingly small and performance of Linux applications is much improved over WSL 1.
BUT, apparently, accessing files stored on Windows through Linux is now piss slow.
Great, truly outstanding.
Why is this a problem? Well, I use WSL to develop c++ Linux applications using CLion, the way this works is that you set up an ssh server in WSL, which CLion uses to do compilations.
One _needs_ to have the project files stored on Windows as otherwise CLion on Windows can't access them.
If I wanted a Linux VM I would have installed one.
Urgh.13 -
Oh boy. College started back up today - and now I'm trying to do all my bspwm (Linux Window Manager) shortcuts on Windows... >.>

Currently looking into switching from Windows to Linux as my main day to day OS (at least for development). What distros do you recommend based on my entire Linux experience being a RasPi?4
-
How the hell do you write an ISO to a thumbdrive on Linux without using syslinux/bootiso (as it's a Windows ISO)?17
-
Okay, since I'm handicapped in Linux due to our education system which forced us to learn on windows, I switched over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific and I can't get anything done unless I am root, So suggest me another Linux OS with full root, Exceptions Kali Linux and Arch Linux15

Has anyone experience with putting Linux on a asus e200ha Netbook? Want to get rid of Windows but I'm concerned about driver availability and battery life.1
-
Trying to install elementaryOS alongside Windows 10 in my Acer laptop. Installation went smoothly but now it is not letting me switch to elementaryOS.
Come on Windows 10 (or maybe Acer), just let me use Linux already.
It's not like I am cheating on you! (or maybe I am)5 -
Windows plug & play is shit. Change my mind.
Wasted so much time trying to connect my camera and I still cannot plug it in (not sure if the PCI driver is missing, or just Windows sucks at this). I thought fresh Windows installations handle the drivers automatically, at least last time I looked it worked out of the box.
On the other hand, I've rarely had any issues with Linux in these regards. I'm probably biased, but I'm still more productive when working on Linux.10 -
okay I feel dumb for this question but for my next internship I need Linux on a laptop.
I have two options.
1, Current laptop with windows dual boot or vm
2, shitty laptop just to Linux.
help me out guys :-/10 -
Kinda dev related... Is a 250 GB SSD good enough for dual booting windows and Linux, while putting documents and crap on an HDD?1

I used to run linux with photoshop and illustrator on wine but I recently switched back to windows so I can run the adobe stuff natively and im using the new linux subsystem and honestly , it works pretty darn well.3 -
GLFW is the cleanest, well documented, most convinient API for creating and handling windows in Linux and Windows I've ever used.
The only thing that bugs me is that valgrind detects memory leaks on it.4 -
I recently bought a XPS 15 and it came with Windows, but I'm thinking of putting Linux instead and maybe have a Windows VM.. I love Linux for dev and customization but Windows is just easy to game on. What is your experience on gaming on Linux ?10

i compiled an app on mingw on linux, for windows using qt4, when trying to run it on windows it crashes with no understandable error, i installed wine and tried to run it there, got a proper error message, it was missing dlls
before someone tells me, i know i need a debugger, I'm just hello worlding around to check that i have all headers and libs in place on both linux native and mingw -
I wanted to use linux, I really did but if I cant get it installed by the end of today im just going to reinstall windows on my new laptop...27

Should I switch from windows to Linux? I'm a college student doing CS and most stuff I've seen on GitHub and such mainly have installation instructions on Linux.
I've heard a bunch of my friends go "dude if you code, consider switching to linux"
Is it worth making the switch? Should I dual boot my laptop or completely switch? Or could I make do with a bootable USB drive?9 -
Which Linux distribution is suitable for programming and development purposes?
I am going to use Linux for the first time. I usually worked on windows and macOS.11 -
Some pigs just don't fly, even with sufficient thrust.
Been struggling for days trying to get my IntelliJ-on-Linux-VM setup running on Windows, and it's abysmally slow. Latencies for the UI are counted in seconds.
Screw it, I'm reinstalling my entire dev stack direct on Windows. I love Linux, but I will not use it when the price is that I cannot get anything done.8 -
Oracle 11g DB or whatever version it was!! You need a fucking windows machine to install it, doesnt install on Linux or Mac!! I am a MySQL/Postgres guy, working on it was a nightmare, permission issues, and you need the oracle instant client on your system to communicate with windows, which works after a zillion errors!!
-
Q: Why is windows better than linux?
A: Cos when you download zoom on windows, you can be pretty darn sure that it will work without you having to debug stupid permission issues. Linux would be dead if web browsers weren't a thing.19 -
A weird thing happened when I tried to install linux mint on my PC.
Although I installed it on a hard drive (I have another hard drive for windows), my bios tells me that Linux would be on the same hard drive as Windows?? I can assure that it's not the case, as I plugged out the linux drive and grub couldn't boot Linux anymore, just windows. Plug back in, linux bootable. Ok fine?
When I installed linux I panicked for a moment, as I thought I had it correctly installed separately, instead it would have become a dual boot, according to the bios?6 -
After having to develop on windows for 2 years I had to make a websocket based communications service for Linux. It was just so nice having proper tools again...

Hey guyz
I fucked off windows OS I.e.

Is there any way to make a file on your Linux or Windows computer where you can back up your phone through the magic of the interwed?

New Year's goal: find out if linux vulkan/mesa drivers work on my desktop as there's no real reason to not switch now other than maybe that.
Proton, DXVK and Gallium Nine support like 80% of games now (suck it, nvidia users, we get the good ones!) and i've seen performance improvements after switching from Windows builds on Windows to Windows builds on Proton using the same hardware.
Question is: how the hell do I carry over almost 2TB of shit to the new partitions? Also, Virtualbox is a bitch on Linux as if my kernel updates it's fucked and Boxes is trash...11 -
Tried to pull a Java solution, originally developed on linux, into my windows environment to test a Jenkins job. The build job wouldn't run on my box due to reaching the arbitrary max windows path limit in command prompt..why??7

Hello folks, have a question, I can't decide if I should install windows 7 (super stable Windows btw) or a Linux distribution (debian or Ubuntu 14), I've always been a Windows guy and was thinking of switching to Linux on my new free dos laptop and wanted to have a hand on Linux, but please I don't want that Windows/Linux fight I just need real advice. Some friends told me to get Windows 7 and a VM Linux just for practice, I also thought about having a dual boot Windows Linux server , I think it would be the best config for me.. so..?3

I have troubles running docker and daemon on ubuntu linux cli installed on windows 10, tried to solve all possible mistakes but no result. Windows is a bullshit, Ubuntu linux cli for windows is not fully fledged.8

It's like everyone has agreed, you know what python on windows sucks, let's just use linux1 -
Linux: sudo apt-get install IDE dev-libs etc
Windows: install wxMSW, extract compressed binaries, set environment variables, set preprocessor/project settings in VS2017, set search directories, etc.
Why is it so ANNOYING to set up a simple GUI development library for C++ on Windows? -
I kind of feel like I type faster when I use Windows than Linux.
Don't know whether it is because I type code on Linux and !code on Windows1 -
2 weeks of grub rescue, windows 10, Windows xp, Linux mint cinnamon, Linux mint MATE, bios, cmos, squashfs error, debian and unetbootin.... Thanks to rufus and Ubuntu we're now back on track. I've just gone from computer tinker to computer badass B-)

How does one convert an .img system image for Android to the format readable by Heimdall on Linux... Only thing I found so far requires Windows... Why make Heimdall if you need Windows anyway to make the image... Just use Odin on Windows then... Any ideas? Don't have Windows... And all I need is to read a bloody logfile (btsnoop_hci.log). Thanks, "secure" Android Oreo!!!4
