Bf: what you doing?
Me: coding
Bf: do you ever stop working?!
Me: I'm not 'working', I'm doing my own project.
Bf: but you do that at work. Why do you want to keep doing it?
Me: it's fun?
--- a few days later ---
Bf: what you doing?
Me: reading.
Bf: omg you're not coding! What are you reading?
Me: a book about coding
Bf: *faceplam*15 -
It's 2017 and you're not allowed to complain about syntax error bugs. Get a proper tool for the job.
We don't use rocks for hammers, and we don't use notepad for coding15 -
That moment when you look at other peoples code and realize you are not as shitty at coding as you thought.3
-
So today this Mother F**ker get HR to back him up to accuse me of not communicating well in the team because I consistently asked him (the code owner) why he kept coding not following the coding guideline.
How is it not communicating? He literally ghosted me and blocked me every time I ask him questions. Which I somewhat don't understand what he is trying to do. HR lady told me that a senior software engineer should have the knowledge to understand everything and all the code.
But the code looks like this :41 -
I was assigned to be a mentor for the first time in my 23 years of existence. She was a junior.
Turned out she had more knowledge and coding experience than me. So I could not mentor her.9 -
Friend: So what's the plan for Christmas
Me: Nothing much just coding
Friend: No apart from work
Me: Yeah coding
Friend: That means, you not getting drunk or laid this Christmas
Me: No, because I can't C Sharp when coding
Friend: Fuck developers2 -
It was for a job interview, I wouldn't specify what the challenge is but they said I could use any language I want; I chose Python. They said I failed the coding interview because it was not Java.8
-
How to make a cold cup of coffee:-
1-make a normal cup of coffee
2-start coding
3-after coding you'll forget that you made coffee
4-drink it cold
5-feel bad for not drinking it while it's hot4 -
I find coding is the best way to alleviate boredom on a plane.
Not because I enjoy coding that much, but because there are two types of people:
1) Those who know what programming is and who will ALWAYS ask about it interested. (Conversation starter)
2) Those who don't know what it is and just assume you're hacking the plane!4 -
Why are interviewers so resistant to letting people use Google while doing coding questions? It’s not like I can remember all the semantics of every language anyway, and so much of coding is learning to use Google correctly.8
-
Telling a developer to just start coding (because we need shit done) is like asking the surgeon not to wash he's hands before a operation cause it would save us time.4
-
Sitting in the parking lot at work not wanting to go inside. Something needs to change, I am so bored here. I love coding...but not here.8
-
Drunk programming is the best obfuscation. Tomorrow morning I'll have no idea how any of this works.3
-
Dev of my team coding on Idea
Seeing him using space-bar to format copy pasted lines of code
Me: why don't you use ctrl+l shortcut?
Him: I don't use shortcuts while coding
Me: at least use the tab
him: nope.
He formatted 3000 lines of code with space-bar. He's not even using notepad. 😐
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.9 -
For a developer 07:23 AM does not always mean early morning, it can also mean super late night coding ;)
-
The music I hear while coding can describe my current mood:
Dubstep and other electronic music -> chilled and focused
Movie soundtracks -> everything I do today is working fine
Anime Openings/JPop -> in desperate need for motivation
Metal -> why is that son of a code not working?!
What kind of music do you listen to while coding?17 -
I've been coding for the last 19 Hours (not including break), and now I am starting to get hand seizure, my finger just start cramming for no reason.
i need a doctor14 -
The relentless feeling that slowly has over taken my waking life. The feeling that if I am not coding, learning or becoming better at coding I am wasting my time. I can't even watch movies anymore without reading articles. This is the worst thing about being a Dev, how when you are a dev you are nothing else.
At least for me, not sure how common this feeling is.10 -
I kid you not, one of my designer friends dipped his toes into coding, he ran into a problem...
Wondered why the following function wasn't returning a random number...
public Int getRandomNumber(){
return 4;
}
#facePalm #stickToDesigning7 -
This meme is not that funny, but after long day of coding when your brain turns into potato, it becomes hilarious.. why though? 😂4
-
*wants to do some coding for once*
Stack Overflow: sorry, we're offline 😶
Classic 😑
Also it's Monday. Coincidence? Most certainly not!!5 -
instead of ranting why php sucks or your co-worker being an ass in coding, why not have some of this?12
-
When my daughter is around while I'm coding.. I feel disturbed... When she is not around.. I feel distracted (missing her)3
-
Friday night and still coding. sometimes I force myself to go sit on the balcony for a minute to make me not forget about outside...5
-
Is it just me or does this shirt make no sense? If your coffee was empty, then it would return true and you would keep coding. If it was not empty you would fill it.
Plus it's not a while loop, so unless this is some sort of recursion you wouldn't keep going....4 -
I hate the mentality that our only hobby as programmers should be coding. Sorry but I enjoy crochet, reading, video games, and fashion. I'm not dedicating my entire life to coding. If that means it's more difficult to get a job so be it. I'll dedicate some time to coding but not all my time. I hate the kids i went to college with who would judge you if you github account didn't have green squares every single day. Sorry I just can't focus on coding that much. I need a fucking break sometimes. I can't just be a coding robot. Maybe im not meant to be a programmer. Maybe that's why I still don't have a job when I graduated 11/20 and it's 02/02 but fuck. I can't just be a program robot. (Sorry I'm a little drunk and sad)25

#1 life lesson I learned from coding?
Maybe not coding specifically, but I learned the difference between problem solving and solution finding.
Its helped me in a lot of areas of my life. Made friends and made enemies.4 -
Me at home with my sister.
She(with water jar): Roshan, I can't open up the jar, please help me.
Me(coding): Do not disturb me!! just install Java runtime environment (JRE) and open it again.3 -
At work,
If I'm not coding, I can't wait for lunch or too leave.
If I am, time becomes irrelevant me
It's 4pm now... Just finished coding... Time to take a lunch break...
Anyone else do this?5 -
I learnt my college junior some coding and development, and we became best friends.
Later I asked her out, and now we are not talking after that. 😅10 -
I should put a sign on my door, "DO NOT DISTURB, CODING.... BRING SACRIFICE IF YOU MUST...." damn distractions....2
-
Just a reminder.
If you've been coding/studying/working/dealing with shit/stressed out/mentally broken/dead from the inside/fighting for your goal and not working out and so on all year long.
Take.
A.
Fucking.
Vacation.8 -
/**
* Do not read before New Year.

Happy coding to all of you guys! My very best wishes for this 2018. May your code be free of bugs the whole year.
P.S. Fuck you testers (just kidding, we need you)4 -
When u correct someone's coding style, telling them it's not standard and tell them what is the standard way of doing it and they reply with a "why should I do it that way?"6
-
Too many "web savvy" clients these days. 9 times out of 10 they get hosting accounts which i have to reconfigure. My quote was for coding not sys admin. Do me a favour and dont do me any favours.3
-
Quited my job because I want to code and not project managing (instead of coding). Found a new job as front-end developer with opportunity to become a full stack dev.
-
Fried from working all day, not long after getting up and doing something else the itch returns.
Coding is a drug and we're all addicts. -
Starts coding in Android Studio, Auto-complete does not function
**doesn't know how to code anymore**4 -
When you have to take a rest cause you're tired & exhausted after a day of coding..
..but your code is not done and you feel empty and you feel like a failure..3 -
When your comp sci teacher says we're gonna start to code today, then tells you to open scratch .-.
(Still in highschool)8 -
I hate those movies/tv series in programmer just tap on some keys and says it's done. this makes programming/coding looks so easy.
FUCK YOU MAN ITS NOT EASYYYY4 -
I've just realized that It is not worth trading my health for better grades at school, from now on I'll focus more on coding and on sleeping as well.3
-
Coding-related ads are always entertaining. They nearly always contain easily spotted nonsense and error-filled code. Not even sure where to start with this one...9
-
I'm going to teach web dev at a coding school in a few months. In the teaching plan, students have to learn git. But we are told explicitly to only teach using github desktop and not the command line because it puts students off.
I'm not sure how to feel about this12 -
Sometimes it feels like I'm not as passionate towards coding as I was before. Seeing bright-eyed juniors with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge makes me wish I could feel the same again. I mean I still like it and all, but it's just not the same.8
-
Teacher:"You have two years before you have to hand in your coursework and final coding project"
Me:"Yes plenty of time I got this"
1 week before final deadline
Me:"WTF have I not done anything"1 -
!rant
I love coding but i haven't touched a physical keyboard and mouse for 10 days! Feels nice for a change. 😃4 -
Coding competitions.
Expectations: a period of intense coding, satisfaction from solving problems, finding neat solutions.
Reality: five FUCKING HOURS spent staring at the screen doing literally nothing, because none of your ideas would fit the time limit and you have NOT A SINGLE FUCKING CLUE WHERE TO EVEN START.
#LookAtHowMuchFunI'mHaving6 -
I have a confession to make. When i started programming it was done in my room all alone for around 6 months. I started watching porn while programming. And eventually only watched porn while coding to a point where I got turned on by programming.
I'm not sure if this further stimulated my love for programming or dimmed it. But sex and coding are now linked in my brain.7 -
The most frustrating situation
when you do competitive coding...
2/50 test cases failed . tried all possible .. and still not done !!
its like "operation success patient dead" .....9 -
I want to know what brings you Joy while programming/coding?
I've been trying to catch that certain feeling...
For me it's having everything make sense and a logical flow through the code and it works every if it is adding two vars.
And please definitely not the money if you're coding for money then you're not enjoying it.12 -
Sometimes, while coding, I get distracted by a tiny voice telling me: "Stop that! You're at work!"
But then I think: "Well, coding IS work."
To which the tiny voice replies: "Yes, but it's not YOUR work."
Damn you, tiny voice, I hate when you are right.
My current career(completely unrelated to programming or even CS) is probably my greatest distraction... and I hate that. =P2 -
A 12-week coding Bootcamp won't turn you into a full stack web developer.
It's like a diet it takes time, it's not over in a few weeks even if you start intensive and really commit to it.4 -
When coding is not just your passion or work, but your entire lifestyle..
Maybe that's why still single?3 -
Coding seems to help me overcome tragedy and depression.
There are various times when things seem helpless to me, and many times when I feel I'm not in control of anything in life, but coding I know where I am, and challenges are overcomeable.
Thanks coding.1 -

Never start watching a series while gradle is building. You end up not finishing coding your app on time instead you watch a whole season before you get back to coding.3
-
Now I feel bad for calling myself a programmer as a highschooler after seeing so many people shitting on the younger people. Goddammit I picked up programming because I thought it was cool and fun not because I want money or shit. I'm not the retard kiddies that overstate my ability. I like coding, I just like coding.
Now I wanna quit.7 -
Worst coding mistake: switching from linux to windows. Developing on windows is like trying to drive a lawnmower. It works, just not very well.3
-
Goals
1. Learn android development
2. Spend more time coding than procastinating (its not my job)
3. Learn more cpp
4. Publish my first android app
5. Finish my current project2 -
Wanted to do a 1 hour coding challenge. Thought "hey why not use js this time". 3 hours later, my blood pressure is skyrocketing and i am really bothered by js threading.2
-
Youtube coding influncers are shit and do not know anything about the real world coding....
Am I the only one who feels like this???
And aren’t there way too many of em????9 -
Some programmer forget to put ; at the end of their commands,
My problem is that i forget not to put ; while coding in python :/4 -
Not only coding, but studying Computer Science has changed a lot in my life. For example, learning about CPU scheduling algorithms made me manage time for my personal tasks a lot better. Earlier I used to waste a lot of time by doing tasks in out of sync order. Also coding made me realize how dumb most people are!3
-
Go for a job as an developer. Tell them I'm not UX/UI I'm more engineer / coder... "We understand, that's what we want"... Complete the coding project.... "Sorry it's not very pretty, and a bit off on the iPhone screen..." - fuck you.1
-
If not already, you guys should try reading coding/developing articles in medium. They are superb.
Like this one:
https://medium.freecodecamp.com/fin... -
It all started when I was driving and wasn’t paying attention to the road bc I was trying to think of a solution to a coding issue when all the sudden a deer jumps in front of my car! My car is smashed and I call road service. They send someone out and as I wait I decide to do a little coding while in the middle of the woods with my laptop. I sit down and the same deer (remarkably un phased) charges me and kicks my laptop like a football. I suffered not one but two impacts from coding...4

Biggest coding distraction - vape breaks. Not too long ago it was totally acceptable to vape inside the office. :-/17
-
Even with something as simple as pagination, it's possible to create a complete accessibility abomination. Dear designer, you've perfected your flat design style.
Fuck you! I'm not coding this.
It's a website about selling solar panels, underfloor heating etc... Not a single piece of design reminds it.7 -
why do so many programmers have so little regard for grammar/syntax, spelling and formatting when it comes to written communication?? it's not as though you can get away with ignoring their analogues when coding!4
-
Started a small personal Android project after 1 year of not coding android.
Create project -> hmm -> should i... try kotlin -> install plugin -> new project. This thing seems to have a much clear syntax, unexpected.3 -
Not as unusual, but definitely the most comfortable:
Next to a fireplace in a cabin in the woods. Without the Internet. Best coding session I've ever had.2 -
Got this as wallpaper and just now i noticed that the output is actually "I CODING"
Since the show_love function is not being called out3 -
I always try to explain the new coding conventions to my team but they think it's funny and should not be taken seriously [facepalm]2
-
What I miss about not being a team lead is how I used to spend all my hours in the office coding. Just coding.5
-
For those interested in my ealier experiment of drinking and coding, it did work.
Of course, it's not a very viable method of increasing performance.7 -
I can't stop procrastinating from doing what I need to do. This extends to even web development and coding on personal projects, which is something I really enjoy doing.
It's as if I have some sort of underlying fear holding me back each time I get the chance to get things done. Normally I don't have the time and make the excuse for myself that there "is not enough time" but tbh I now literally have an entire week in front of me free, with nobody to distract me. I am actually getting my long-desired time alone. I can finally power through all the things that require intense focus, like coding.
And yet, I can't bring myself to just do it. Instead I make excuses and go play video games instead (Overwatch has been a really bad time sink for me). I haven't been able to do what I wanted to for like a year now. What the fuck is wrong with me?
I need help guys!! Anyone have advice for me?9 -
I was so in-depth thinking about coding that I didn't realize that the finger I was sucking was prior used to scratch my testicles..
Please god, I hope I'm not the only one.4 -
What people don't get about drinking and coding is this.
Coding and development is very similar to art. You've to be creative in your solutions. You've withdraw all emotions and concentrate. And you've to find your own creativity.
You have drunk artists all the time, why not drunk coders?11 -
i have been working on a web-based game and this is my daily routine (also i listen to rock and metal)
college to home to coding

back to coding
A thousand year later...
Bug status: Still not fixed4 -
Not really through coding but more because I joined devRant. Great community and I have already made some great friends :)3
-
I like coding. I am a professional coder. But I feel I am not very good at it. My colleagues are so creative and fast with their solutions. And here I am, always in awe and never seem to feel like becoming an expert in coding. The thoughts are tiring 😪6
-
When you're demoing a prototype and the guy who always introduces himself by saying he's "not the coding type," proceeds to try and tell you how he would have done it.
-
i had a 2-day, sat & sun, coding contest on codingame, but after coding for 24h my mother called me and said that her brother (and my uncle) died from alcoholic addiction
i did not commit my solution on that contest and now, for already five years, i'm afraid of participating in any similar contests2 -
My deares coding buddy is a Toriel plushie, shes just sitting there silently, not judging me i love her.
Also i fucking hate c++ please end the pain.8 -

I was coding some simple themes for a management system I'm currently working on my job, then I remembered about @Alice and I thought to myself "Fuck it, why not?" and added a subtle pink theme3 -

Have you ever gone to a bar just for the purpose of beer-coding/barcoding?
I just did it and it is awesome, but too much beer is not helping very much for difficult tasks...2 -
$a = 1;
$b = 2;
echo ($a < $b) ? ($a > $b) ? 'This is totally fine' : ($a < $b) ? 'This is not ok!' : 'Perfect' : 'No problem here';
Why do people do this?!
(And I mean nested ternary ifs, not coding in PHP :P)16 -
!rant
Well, I did it.
My alpha first app I'm sharing with the public.
It's small, it's not pretty, but it's mine.
Say hello to, Coding Trainer
https://github.com/IronPhreak/...
Coding trainer is a project to encourage users to code more and not procrastinate. This is done by incentivizing users to work on their code in order to access certain "fun" programs
-----
I know this isn't the best as it's only a small amount of code and hours worked on, I know it can (and will) be improved. However this has given me some experience I didn't have before which will lead into future apps I work on8 -
Me: Explaining what I do for a living (strip's title)
So true though as most of the workday is not coding...
Or is that how you explain all that typing (coding) to a layman?3 -
!rant what do you ranters do when you're not ranting or coding? Me? I work on cars. Car in the picture is my gf's mini.9
-
When your plugins list in your newly "coded" WordPress site could use an infinity loader, that means you are probably one of those fucking two weeks fucking coding bootcamps miracles. Fuck, that's not how the website is done...
-
It was my birthday gf and friends got me drunk, so in response i woke up with a hangover. Coding does not mix well with a hangover 😟
-
New coffee machines at work. Real beans! What's the equivalent of the Ballmer Peak for Caffeine? Posting this at 4.04am, lying awake in bed and not coding, I'm probably past it.. sleep not found2
-
In the hospital while having some shit sucked out of my lung with a drain just under my right nipple. Not pleasant experience but coding helped.7

Not everyone get such seniors(read friend) to help and push you into that fuckery of coding :)
They're like, "We suffered. So will You." -
I think I'll finish this before lunch...
*lunch*
I think I will finish it today!
*end of the day*
Not finished... But almost
Been coding the whole day, but my estimation was way off :(1 -
not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1 -
Not a vary technical question but I wanna ask:
What do you do to avoid backache and neckache after a few hours of coding ?7 -
how do u guys get motivated to start coding?
I'm pretty much have a lot of time this week (holidays) and i want to spend on my own project.
but i just not strong enough to start..14 -
Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills - ‘A new study finds that the technical interviews currently used in hiring for many software engineering positions test whether a job candidate has performance anxiety rather than whether the candidate is competent at coding. The interviews may also be used to exclude groups or favor specific job candidates.’

Fucking coding interviews3 -

True Story :D1 -
Story of coding affecting my dating?
Well whenever I start a new language, I always find myself having difficulties with time and date structure-
Wait, that's not the subject? ... oh the other kind of "date". Well, not finding difficulties for something I'm not looking forward to lol -
Coding is a form of art. Some of my coworkers don't understand this and it sucks.
Coding should be an obligatory assignment in all schools. Not because I love it, but because they will.
Coding is a lot like philosophy, it opens up your eyes in so many ways.
That's it folks. Thank you for reading.2 -
After 2 weeks of ranting I have honestly ran out of rants.
Either my life as a dev is too good or I'm clearly not coding enough.
The later seems more plausible. -
That moment when first coding challenge is a mathematical expression evaluator with custom unary operators but your code does not meet the standard because it did not cure cancer.
The fuck you mean I had no unit tests. You specifically told me that you don't want a lot of code. F@$#&#k -
I get listening to music while you code, but I’m afraid I just can’t believe in watching a TV show while you code. You’re not coding, you’re watching a show. Or if you are coding, the level of code that’s being written is probably low enough to make it a waste of time.4

Spend 3hrs on a coding excersize for a job interview and recieve the following as the reason they are not moving forward

Restarted #100daysofcode.
Gonna finish this time no matter what 💪✊.
It's the challenge where you do code every day for 100days.
I am not kinda well right now but it's perfect opportunity
I got the time I always wanted for coding
So no excuses anymore.
Hope you guys also having some adventures coding time 😉😂8 -
It's not such a good way to disconnect from work to hang out with friends, drink too much, and start coding Python in the sand of a park.1
-
Don’t you feel like development with Android Studio is 50% figuring out why the f*ck is not building, or running, resetting cache, clean build, rebuild… etc, and 50% coding? Or is it my lack of experience?11
-
I hate interviews. I am not too keen on giving them and not too great at taking them, though I typically do well.
We are smart people, there has to be a better way than coding things on the fly... -
Since we devs are masters of the weird - I thought: "why not make a collection of weird things?".
Incase you want to contribute - Contribute!

git stash pop'd on wrong branch, hadn't realized it until after a bunch more work. Then continued screwing things up and unit tests are failing.
This is not a good coding day. -
Not so much of a rant but recommendation.
Have been listening to a completely epic Spotify playlist all day today whilst coding - "RetroWave / Outrun".
It's really good for keeping my concentration :)9 -

I have a question; when I get interrupted while coding (dinner, friends etc) I'm often "stuck" in my head while just thinking about the problem I were to solve in the code. Anyone else have this? Does it have a name and any tips to "let the code go" while not coding?5 -
About coding music.
Sometimes I like music, sometimes I need absolute silence (I wear shooting earmuffs for those times).
But holy crap if a song has that weird repeated fade in fade out the music shit in it, that is NOT CODING MUSIC!8 -
alert("Really bad english here");
I need to study.
I want to study.
But I can't.
I am 16 year old and I am in school. When I'm not studying for tests, I am programming something. I'm not finding time to do anything else. Just getting stressed.
Anyone in here started coding early too?
How do you separate time for school and for coding?8 -
Worst part of coding lang I love?
C# being case-sensitive.
Not a C# language thing, but I hate the vilification and anti-coding standard of not 'allowing' prefixes. Interfaces are allowed (ex. IUpdateCustomer), why not classes? Why can't I have a DTO and declare it a TCustomer and the zealots not scream "HE'S USING HUNGARIAN NOTATION!!! TAKE HIM TO THE STAKE!!"?24 -
5am zzzZzZz, first day in 3 weeks summer holiday, wife is snoring so why not get up and get some coding done :-)4
-
Is anyone addicted to anything other than coding? :)
(Totally not a recovering addict looking for reassurance >.>).24 -
Being a freelancer is not only coding. Mostly (for me at least) it's mailing until you mail your client: "I'm done for today."
FUCK!!!2 -
It’s very annoying that at my school we barely get any coding at all and to top it off it’s in a typing class using block coding. Considering it’s in a TYPING class you’d think they’d’ve used their typing skills to use but no, they instead use block coding meant for like 4th graders. This is why I say we need more coding classes in schools. Not only that but make it more mainstream1

I love what I do, I'm passionate about what I do and at times I'd rather be home coding than at work in a meeting. While coding is amazing, I can see how someone could become overwhelmed. I can see why people are scared of programming. Not everyone needs to learn how to code so I don't see why so many people are pushing this "everyone should code" agenda2
-
Code didn't change my life because I've been coding since I was a kid. You could say that it shaped my life instead. I don't know life without code. I don't know if that's good or it's not...
-
Using a touchpad to scroll is painful.
Coding with Visual Studio is painful, too.
Know what's really painful?
Not being able to scroll with the touchpad while coding with Visual Studio...10 -
It's not everyday you see a pink unicorn coding and getting frustrated in a coffee shop...FYI that pink unicorn was me.
-
Hi my named bluescreen and I'm addicted to coding ....
Feel like I should be at some kind of Coders AA meeting .....
I'm having a few days off work, this is my 3rd day and I'm already twitching because I've not got my daily fix of coding (wife won't let me near a computer when I'm on holiday)
I've never had any kind of addiction except coding. I feel really uncomfortable not doing anything, coding is my job and hobby.
I normally come on here to rant / read posts but today I'm browsing just on the off chance that I see some code ....
I need help ......6 -
So I had this idea on doing some volunteer teaching in programming in the US. I would not say I can teach anything on coding though I can code. Any resources that would be good for learning to teach coding skills to people who may not have that technical background?
Edit: this is for volunteer work. Think inner city and disadvantaged individuals.2 -
"I'm nearly done. Just one last bug to fix."
Time passes, coding happens ...
"No, not quite done. Just three more bugs to fix."1 -
WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO RANDOM PEOPLE WRITE ME UP ON DISCORD TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR DEVELOPMENT ISSUES. I AM OPEN TO HELP BUT I AM NOT A FUCKING CODING SERVICE.9
-
dev: ugh we need to set and implement coding standards
same dev: no I don't need to follow what you just said, it's already clean and readable (it's not) -
I'll never understand how you could learn to code by reading the documentation and not by actually...idk...solving problems and coding? Especially if you're a beginner.2
-
Applied to an AI startup, offering 100 bucks if I pass their coding challenge…hopefully just an algo question and not a damn jira ticket7
-
I don't understand why managers are not held responsible for the under estimated timeline of the project, the developer will suffer from the overtime and crunch of coding.3
-
At math lessons I was like: "WTF is this shit, I don´t need that." Well I figured out that coding is not "copy&paste" from SO. :)
-
I do not work developing, besides this is really a passion for me. Said that, today I was talking with my boss.
Boss: Your idea is great, I love this tool you made.
Me: Thank you, I just need to finish some details, this last dramatic change in our structure messed up with a lot of things.
Boss: Yes, I have some ideas to we code more.
Me: Great! I love development! We can do ...
Boss: No, we can use your time with other things as it is more expensive. I'm going to get a boy still in college to develop.3 -
Do you guys support today's youth learning how to code? If so, why? If not, why not?
I started coding when I was 11.13 -
In the country, Sunday morning, gale blowing, internet off/on, coffee, warm fire: Coding day or not?
-
Your tests won't work right because you failed to meet coding standard, not that hard to understand. Yet, here we are still implementing the same shit that got us in this conversation.
-
Okay govs and schools should stop this robotic production by forcing children to learn coding since an early age of 10. It's ridiculous !
Not only are you not giving a shit about whether they are interested or not, you are saturating an already saturated industry. Moreover, you are encouraging young children to sit all day in front of a screen when they should be playing, doing and learning other things.
Let them discover the subject. Let them fall in love with programming and coding. Don't force it onto them...4 -
Random: What kind of music do you listen to when working?
I'm sure a lot, if not most folks on this website have headphones on while coding.22 -
Whats up with Rust?
New to devrant so thought I'd post this here instead of googling (to practice devrant.. 😊)
Haven't heard of rust till lately but not sure it's place in coding languages...6 -
Coding in the brainfuck learning language is pretty funny. Or a coding challenge not for the smoothest running program but for the longest possible compilation time on an IBM Z processor.1
-
You know what's worse than reading someone else's code? Reading someone else's code with comments that make absolutely no sense!
It's like deciphering hieroglyphics. If you're going to comment, at least give me a hint, not a riddle.
It's not a treasure hunt; it's coding!2 -
Why not : How school make you love/hate a specific domain in Computers in general ? Like Databases, Model Driven Development, simple coding, whatever3
-
do you guys think multitasking is a high standard? at work we deem it essential, but i wonder if it's too much to expect new people to pick up on our pace. if we're not coding in a meeting while answering texts and emails, we're not getting anything done13
-
I love coding so much that I end up re-inventing the wheel more often than not. Like, I'll see an interesting problem and I'll prefer coding it myself than just google it. That's definitely a form of masochism. 🥺
Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have a 100 other things to do...3 -
Coding in Pharo Smalltalk makes me not want to code in anything else.
If i could find a Pharo job i would be pretty stoked.
Yeah I like Smalltalk that much.2 -
My dream! When I remind myself that I'm not where I want to be yet, I get in that ultimate coding-zone. I push myself to be better every time and that gets me coding and learning new things. And of course, red bull ;)
-
8am in the morning, after coding the whole night and finally getting that functionality done, I feel very inspired to fall into bed and not do shit the whole next day. Because productivity starts at night again...
-
So apparently friends have access to privates.
Just some coding thoughts. Yes I'm talking about C++, not...
Indeed, programmers are tiny Gods.1 -
Not a rant but Nashville puts on a good coding conference called Music City Code. I went last year and am attending this year. For entertainment they have devs playing rock music. http://www.musiccitycode.com3
-
Not really a burnout, but after 10 hours of coding and almost no food it gets extremly hard to concentrae.
-
So I'm a young lad with a career in Front end development I love coding in HTML (yes I know it's not a coding language to some, but to a computer illiterate person it's wizardry so I've got that going for me) I've got skills in responsive design with css and skills in javascript, jQuery and a little bit of skill in PHP But I'm not sure what to go for next? I'm not much of a back end developer..got nothing against it, just never was my cuppa tea. I want to improve my skills but I'm not sure what to look into.. Any advice?2
-
I know how to code. I am good at coding, algorithms, datastructures. I have also been using linux since 4 years.
But still I am not a programmer. I work on excel in office.1 -

Fuck just got back from an interview and realized the "optimal" answer I have to one of the questions is actually not.... And the question was literally from Cracking the Coding Interview... In like Chapter 1...
-
Can't believe I got grief yesterday cos I didn't fix a users pc networking fast enough. For a start I am a bleeding developer and then I wasnt told which user had a problem oh and I wasn't the first dev asked either.
-
On interview: do you know SVG?
intern: yes
It turns out that they meant that they know how to select "SVG" as the export format.
Thank god that intern went into the design department and not coding.5 -
Life Bugs
====================
What would you define code that's not "Hard coding ?" ---"Soft-coding" ?
Any suggestions?
-_-3 -
I code.
Never speak to my family about coding.
Family tries not to talk to me. l
Ask them why.
They say I would ramble about C++ or my Python...1 -
I know everyone acting cool on the Internet that they've made friends while coding is lying. This is real life not twilight!3
-
I hate this type of Developer who always asks to add everything as requirement for every single detail. Company is paying you for thinking, or at least asking BA, not only coding requirements in Java/C#/whatever and denying fixes because it was not in requirements.3
-
After spending hours on just one code and not able to make it run,
here I am on devrant and announcing,
Life is Shit, Shit is life,
Coding is love, but being a coder is shit.2 -
*coding while day* "no motivation not inspiration.. need more coffee" && *coding while night* "I can see the matrix and bend it to my will"
-
Fuck yeah!!! Finally found Mate! 😎
Well, not exactly dev related... Meh, whoami kidding, coding without Mate is nigh impossible 😁5 -
A gradual learning environment with a competitive environment . A place with a correct amount of air conditioning ( not like a freaking fridge ) . Coding the algorithm and stuff for games .
Last but not the least .. A large monitor but not too large ... -
What are you doing today?
Oh just rererereinstalling windows. Not even a little upset. Not like I'm in the middle of a *swearword* boot camp. Not like I'm supposed to be coding a conservative 8-10 hours a day. Nbd. This is my favorite way to spend time.1 -
My routine everyday:
waking up
going to work
coding
going home
coding again
.
.
then exercising, watching shows and of course eating...
sometimes, no, I should say always remember that you need a time for yourself, you need to do some other stuff, not always coding, work, etc. We are not computer. 😉 💡2 -
what I like to do when I'm not programming (draw, and also garden)
Can't. stop. creating. things.
what do you guys like to do outside of coding?4 -
When you don't want to go for your midday run, not because you don't feel like working out, but because it'll take time away from coding and you can't read devRant while you run...1
-
NGL on the weekend I love eating, drinking beer, and not coding. Granted if I want to code, I will, but I like that i can do it as a hobby and turn my coding brain off if I want to.
-
I'm not really a developer... but my Mum and Dad did both say "You are managing servers and coding? You are a geographer? Not a computer Scientist?" xundefined wrong job wk18 python digital mapping shocked who knew you can do both gis consultant servers html css1
-
I know when I've been coding too much, and not reading enough when I first try to find the code line I stopped at and when I'd like to ctrl + click a character's name to remember who he is.
-
Keyboard.....
Which one? Mechanical? Regular?
Any recommendations? Only thing I need is it to be silent and not glow like a lamp. Mostly for coding work stuff, 0 gaming.11 -
!rant && seekGuidance
Been coding for 8 years now, working for at least 6-7 ( freelancing mostly ). Have done multiple big projects along the way, and have not written a single test case ever. Everything works just fine, I usually test things alongside coding stuff. Could someone explain the benefits of creating tests? You can slap me in the face for not doing it if you want ( after explaining why it's so bad ). btw, i'm a web developer ( symfony / angular / vue )5 -
I prefer coding (at work ot private) with music, any good suggests what to hear today? (should be relaxing and not to much vocals, because they distract)11
-
Pisses me off when coding an email using tables and not allowed to use most of the awesome styles and elements. :'(4
-
If you enjoy coding at coffee shops, remember to wear headphones. Not only will it help you focus, it'll also block out John Mayer.1
-
(not a rant) Knowledge seeker XD
I'm about to start my life as unemployed/fresh grad , and I'm still not sure if my coding was good or right (proper coding). But I already have an experience on creating Android App (Java) and MySQL as database , Web Dev (HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, MySQL database) implement plugins like JQuery , Bootstrap , Chart.js , and DataTables , basics of Python , GIT ,and understanding of OOP.
I'd like to know where I can learn proper coding and good practices , where I can solve sample machine problem , learn different programming languages , and tips that might help me to be better.
note: I already do some research about this topics , I just want to get more answer as much as possible , Thank you :)
May the bug/s be fixed by you. -
Learning to play the piano right now(hey, SOMETHING has to be done about all that coding stress, right??).
In one sentence - Learning music is easy, but it's surely not simple.2 -
You know how when you specifically tell Developers lower than you NOT to do something like add more features without debugging first on a Site that uses the coding language "blocky" ON A CHROMEBOOK....... Guess what they do?7
-
Why did it take the JS community so long to understand that they are ultimately coding UI apps; and did not follow existing, solved GUI patterns (game loop style, one way data binding etc.) until recently? Any thoughts?
-
When I say I'm working on an important update to the application, what I mean is "go away and stop bothering me, right now, or I will cock-punch you, right now."
-
this.rantType != RantType.RANT;
Hey, i do not want to spam DevRant with non dev stuff, but i really want to ask this you, i personally cant only code all time, im coding full time and a lot in my free time, but i just cant only code.
So i found another thing that i fell in love with, i fell in love with animal photography!!
I want to ask you, yes you reading this: do you need something else than coding or not? and if you do, what? let me know with a simple comment!6 -
Meetings are by definition not productive. I don't mean that sarcastically or cynically; if I'm not at my computer actively coding, debugging, or researching then I am officially off task.
Product management and financial types can have all the meetings they want, and try to involve me as little as possible.2 -
Remove it completly. There is no point in forcing it on children, governments are too slow to deliver a proper education plan that is not horrible outdated and proper coding teachers are non-existant.
Instead they shoul focus on STEM and provide computer clubs that are not based around grades and education plans.1 -
What percentage of your time is spent actuslly coding?
In a week, I spend not more than 1 full working day writing codes. The rest is spent doing PoCs, designing (LLD and rarely HLD), solutioning and deployment.1 -
Limited power!!!,, limited power!!!. limited power!!!.. I'm so tired of this nation... coding is hard for us jst because of this country... been trying to focus and work harder without blaming the country but it jst not working2
-
Not *drunk* coding per se, but there have been a couple evenings where a bottle of red has provided just the right push to finally get something done that I’d been stalling on...
-
How do ppl just keep coding. I can't stay on it for shit. Anything that comes to mind will distract me and keep me from starting or working on.... It sucks, its not even like i dislike coding. I actuay enjoy it once i start but games wirh friends n shit always take Priority for some reason :(8
-
Been going on some interviews recently and realized I'm not the best at interview style coding challenges. I was wondering if there's a good app/website with coding challenges to solve, or even a game? Preferably using JavaScript or Python.2
-
Writing DAL code that I am 99% sure will be replaced really soon along with the database schema.
Angry coding is almost as good as tipsy coding - AMAZING. -
How it all started today: achieved rank below 100 for the first time in a coding competition.
How it's all ending: not able to solve even a single problem now. Not even the Leetcode easy ones.
Conclusion: a happy beginning can end depressing.
Cheers to Programmers...3 -
1. Brain feels like in motion without idle time. It's a very pleasurable feeling
2. Create things from scratch by myself
3. solving problems
Not all coding is like this, though. -
Not taking an UI/UX class. I think this would help me be a better front-end developer. And also, not enrolling in a coding boot camp full time like I always wanted to. I learn better in a classroom.
-
Was pretty ill for a couple of weeks in 7th grade. Decided to not just lie around but also do something interesting ~ started coding, never stopped since 😊
-
Confirmation bias: the tendency to interpret suspicious software behavior as a feature, not a bug. For example I just saw something that I'm not sure it's OK on a web app that I'm developing but let's pretend it's the intended behavior and keep coding.
-
Im a student, and im learning coding, but analisys too( diagrams, use cases, documentation).
I really love code, but not feel the same about the other part.
Do you feel the same ?2 -
Not quite sure I followed the logic of the tech lead when he explained. I've never felt this "idk wtf in coding" feeling before.
-
My younger bro started Coding today and the first thing he is asked me was if Jupyter Notebook has a dark mode or not.1
-
It's really difficult to stay sane after doing 3hrs of competitive coding plus even after trying so much your code does not run . I really wanna be good at competitive coding but I am horrible. Ahh this is irritating so many hours of thinking shit and nothing workd7
-
DevGoals 2019
B awsome as usual and chill have fun wth coding not limited to working hours.
Make coding my prority one hobby... Then the rest 😉
Starting wt contributing to an open source project... -
I really want to enjoy coding these days but I'm not, it's a mild burnout i feel but how can i get out of it ?6
-
A second questionable alternative is pretending to be coding when yoi're not. Put an old program listing on the corner of your desk. Then go right ahead and develop your requirements and architecture without your boss' approval
Code Complete -
Coding made me who I am now. I have a much more organized mind and critical though. I have some new skills that are really useful when it comes to job hunting. I'm proud to do what I do, even if it's not that much. I love learning, coding just fits my style.
I am grateful that I started doing it, there's one big downside to coding though. We all know what it is: USERS!
Going back to drinking some coffee. Oh yea, that's how coding changed my life ;) -
easy: i give up on my attempts to have social life as they're unsuccessful anyway, and the time i save on not attempting i can use for wallowing in lonely depress... i mean coding!
-
Any good free video tutorial for java spring batch which includes the coding part and not only the conceptual one?Any help will be appreciated..
-
I just watched Bahubali, recomended by my Indian Colleague (wth about so many indians on programming, nice coding btw). Its not a big deal (long and boring most of times) but the WAR SCENE! OMG! INSANE hahahha loved it
-
Tried using Eclipse to practice coding, never understood how to properly set up. It could be not beginner friendly or just a total noob. I think both.1
-
"Premature optimization is the root of all evil" - he quoted Donal Kunth words. Though it's not the worst advice. From then, coding became simple on achieving the task.
-
À test Class can not have any private method.
That's a coding guide line. And if I ask why, the answer is... wait for it..... BECAUSE X and Y DECIDED THIS WITH Z LONG AGO...
Agggghhhhhhhh.... -
You know most coding languages (Except binary) if I am not mistaken had to be coded. That's something to sink you teeth into (;3
-
Last day my coffee ran out and i could not drink coffee. Now i've got that without coffee coding skill willbe disappear,,,2
-
Interviewing is a skill. Technical interviewing is a skill related to but not totally based on coding knowledge. You need to flex this muscle.
Try mock coding interviews with friends. Set up interviews at places you don't necessarily want to work at. Take coding interviews even when you're not looking for a job. -
My life centered around coding... Not so much these few years though.
So that's around 15 years? But I just don't feel motivated or interested in doing anything new.... Unless I get paid... -
Girlfriend complains about how I'm always on my laptop, coding, and how I'm not spending enough time with her.
I tell her that my laptop is not the NUMBER ONE thing in my life, but She is.
Little does she know that as a programmer, I start counting from zero6 -
I worked sufficiently more time on r programming. I felt a bit stress and now my heart is beating abit harder even while I'm not coding. what's happening to me?
-
I am so annoyed by devs who pretend they cannot read or write their own native language or pretend to be stupid when it comes to non-coding tasks.
I know that writing documentation or organizing stuff might not be as exciting as coding. But aren't they ashamed of pretending to have fallen behind a elementary school kid?
'I'm a dev. I'm not supposed to read or write or be educated in something else.' 🤪 -
I’ve realized that coding is really a stupid waste of time. Why you wouldn’t use a visual coding system or ai code assistant or any of the other code methods that are not coding is just dumb. Here’s to the end of coding and similar systems that makes this brain dead skill a thing of the past. I hope my comments didn’t anger any coders especially since I think coding is really stupid.6
-
Hey Devs!,
I've been lurking for a bit and had a question what dev/coding skills should I be looking at to be able to move up? I currently do support for large cluster machines but not full admin work. I want to move to a more sysadmin type position but my coding/scripting is not the strongest and wanted to hear your thoughts -
If anybody knows of any independent software for predictive coding (as in not part of a platform) please let me know, I'm struggling to find any good ones that are standalone!
-
All those complaining about getting interrupted while coding/debugging. Imagine getting interrupted twice in every 3 minutes during your anyways short working time (talk 2 to 5 hours) 'cause your actual job is to tutor people in using a toolchain and not developing it (at least not during that time)...
-
Nothing is as fucked up as it seems, you have this, you'll figure it out, if you can't fix it, scrap it, don't stress yourself out, it's not worth it etc.
Current boss is the best.. Helped me a bunch, not only with how to tackle coding but life in general. -
What are some good coding buddies? I'm thinking of toys, not people. Suggestions? I need someone to talk my code through with who won't argue with me even if my code is wrong 🙃1
