Do not steer away from projects using technologies you may not know or be comfortable in. Instead worked your hardest to get it right, ask lots of questions and don't be insulted if people find issues in your code. It's a learning experience.

Keeping up with the technologies in 2017

I'm turning 28 this year and I still feel I got a really really long way ahead in understanding Javascript and all the new web app building technologies happening.

Feeling a little frustrated for not learning faster and getting kind a stuck, I'm not getting any younger.

Why do job descriptions for ONE developer position, list down ALL the known programming languages, all the web technologies and frameworks available? From java kotlin swift php js jquery node to ionic angular laravel python and what not. Wtf? And this is not one, this is about 70 percent of the job descriptions I see these days!!

The real question would be. How do you get time to learn new technologies?

2019 goals:

- finish my masters
- improve my code quality
- build at least 3 personal projects
- learn 2 new technologies
- find better clients or a good job

I have a habit of viewing the page source of beautiful websites I visit... as well as finding out technologies used on it.

Need advise which one should i choose.

You ask a group of developer something like...

“We have a project built using X, Y and Z. We are looking at integrating the “example framework” to solve a specific problem. Do you have any experience with “example framework” or would you suggest another framework?”

Inevitably you get the same useless response of “Why are you using X, Y, and Z. It’s so <insert generic complaint here>!” Followed with no actual attempt to answer the question asked...

Listen, I know some of us a socially awkward (I can be) and I know we like to debate and argue.

But, if someone asks you a specific technical question about an existing product, either...

1. Answer the question with your experience
2. Declare that you do not have experience with it
3. Shut your fucking childish mouth

No one cares about how you feel about the size of the underlying technology in existing products! What do you expect?

Having to write Swift and Kotlin for a while at work and now switching back to working on web technologies (for a different job), I would say JavaScript is ugly.

There should be a document given to all recruiters outlining how technologies are related and what NOT to ask developers. The hate has to stop. Imagine a world where the recruiters (broadly) understood devs. We'd have a much easier time getting jobs. I think I might just write one up and try to distribute it locally.

My manager told me that I'm going to become unmarketable if I don't start expanding my skills to include other programming languages... This same guy is trying to get rid of the C# and Python applications that our team owns so that he doesn't have to train employees in those technologies. WTF?

Back in early 2012, a favorite MMOG of mine shut down and I was interested in how it worked. I was 13 at the time. A friend of mine, on hearing of my interest, emailed me a bunch of links including Chris Pine's ruby tutorial and TheNewBoston.

From then on I tinkered a little with a bunch of different technologies, picked up a few programming books, and now we're here. I've made a little money as a Java developer and I'm working on an iOS game, but I'm still learning and tinkering with new technologies.

I work in a company, where prototypes become instantly a product... People are far from being an expert in the technologies we use (technologies which were chosen by management without any further research).

Timeframes are more than short, so there is no chance to learn what you need to know to be able to create something really maintainable and stable.

Technologies come and go, but it has a lot in common. Set priorities right. Invest 80% of your learning time in fundamentals. Leave 20% for frameworks, libraries and tools.

I decided to dive into programming by learning C#. Main reason behind it was to avoid the zillions of frameworks and technologies (which scare me) and most importantly dumb client requests. I already have a lot of xp as a designer and working for the web bizz was just UGH!

Nevertheless, I am still wondering if I should pick up some web technologies. I am planning to pick up .NET and C# design patterns next, but what then? Do you think it's smart to focus only on enterprise software development today? I don't mind developing a bigger web-based app or doing server-related stuff either. Hello guys. A newbie to the app. I would like to ask - start a conversation with you about adopting new technologies, if should we follow or just wait? I am a PHP developer. I would set myself around mid to senior level. Since I graduated and I start working on a Marketing/Development Company, I have been develop a lot of websites, platforms with pure PHP, JavaScript, SQL. Later I start using framework like laravel. Now I am thinking about JS frameworks such as node, vue, react, angular and maybe later noSQL. The problem is that there are many new technologies that companies required when you apply. I want to learn new technologies but I don't know if that would be helpful than focus on LAMP and get better and better to that. Many orgs have implemented their own technologies and each company is getting mad to it. You see each company adapt these new technologies even if they don't want em or projects required it. So my question is: are we talking about dramatically speed and light use to server when we use new frameworks like these, previous mentione + etc? Or companies are just trying to look cool by mentioning many techologies while projects could never ask for em? (Nothing serious, I am just trying to make conversation and clear my thoughts by getting others opinion)

Aspiring freelance/junior web dev here, I'm familiar with WSGI (using Flask), some PHP, Apache, JSON, and Vanilla JS. What other technologies should I be learning to make myself more marketable?

Reason to hate my D grade engineering college.

Expectation : at least teacher will introduce fucking web development technologies.
Reality:
Teacher=> look I don't know anything about PHP so learn from web. I will give you internal marks just submit assignment on time.

Got a new job and I'm moving from academia to industry. Decided to step up my web dev game by using Netlify and GatsbyJS to build a static site blog.

Not a difficult task but it forces me to look at more current technologies.

There are just too many interesting languages and technologies to learn and too little time. How does one manage that?

Gotta challenge myself to complete a simple Flutter app because I keep hopping between technologies without accomplished anything.

Soon I’ll be unemployed (on purpose) and will spend some time on my own project ideas.
Pretty much each of them will require an API..

Already started with the first one using python + flask, but I’m planning to do each of them in a different language..

What do you propose? What’s the most fun and the most interesting technology in your opinion?

I’m senior in Java and advanced in JS, / Node so it won’t be any of those and I’m also not a fan of PHP :)

WEP security on a brand new wifi rollout. Do it for the legacy because no one knew the scanner gun (like target or walmart has) could operate on WPA Personal or even....802.1x Kerberos Security login. At least it was *something* but the whole place was on windows xp and server 2003.

In which technologies / languages should I invest my time? Thanks

Always learning new technologies, solutions, and stuff, never afraid to leave my comfort zone, and learning from my or others' mistakes.

Working on cool emerging technologies such as VR, AI or robotics. Or all of them combined. International environment with developers from all over the world. I find myself working at different locations, yet I'd spend all weekends and holidays at home. 6 K €/month + all travel and lodging expenses paid. Plus a culture that encourages innovation and, of course, ranting! :D

No we don't actually need to have a meeting about this because your architectural opinions rely on medium articles written by unemployed people pretending that these competing technologies are relevant. All you have to do is take an existing piece of code and rewrite it how you'd like to, and show everyone that it's better

Simply something where I could work on new technologies, learn and improve my skills.

Working with technologies that excite me, which at the moment would be functional programming, CQRS, Event Sourcing, and the actor model, with a side of machine learning and serverless architectures. At a company that is large enough to pay well and grow in, but small enough that my contributions are recognized and appreciated. Or even better, one that I own and run.

Is there somewhere an overview article/guide on the most popular software associated with web development? There are just so many technologies I know nothing about - Gulp, Grunt, Docker, Webpack, Bower and who knows what else..

Everyone seems to be using something else and it's just total chaos for me.

Why the hell you name a file like this: 12345#20171204#523.wav
We are implementing the tool with web technologies and this is not just ugly filenaming but also very url unfriendly.

I was part of a team that monitored 1700 radio stations world wide and reported the AirPlay to a BigData system. There were only a few engineers on the project and it was 15 years ago before big data design or technologies were widely available. Our biggest challenge - heat from running the servers so hard.

I've always loved to change technologies to work with...I developed Desktop applications, Web applications, android applications...and now I'm working on an IOS app and I have just one message to whoever came up with the brilliant idea of a drag & drop system for views in XCode:

I thought I would be working on a cool web project, learning the best of the current technologies and techniques available. Turns out I'll be working on a JSON that the code will automatically render it on the UI through common components. I haven't touched any line of code so far. But hey, the indentation on my JSON looks nice.

Anyone have books or blogs about microservices and APIs they like?

I spent so much time focusing on front end frameworks and technologies and now I'm having to teach myself RESTful API structures and micro service stuff. I should have spent more time on this earlier on...

i have to work with some caveman technology called rexify.org at my job and there is not a single fucking tutorial or guide explaining how to work with this bullshit. Why do these deepshit companies choose the shittiest 50 year old technologies instead of evolving into new ones?

I'd teach the basic principles of researching technologies, choosing a technology stack, proof of concepts and reading and understanding documentation. If this is done correctly it's 50% of the project. Nowhere on my CS uni has anybody mentioned these things, and I see other students are failing because they don't understand how to start a project or read docs.

Sent a CV for a full-stack C# role. The CV is mainly a mix of working in ASMX/WCF, SQL, SSRS, SSIS, Distributed transaction architectures then with about 40% ASP.NET focusing on server side but also with some client side technologies and that I sometimes use Illustrator for creating/manipulating SVGs.
Was told I am too "front-end"

A question for Web developers:
I'm planing to start working on a web part of my project. Important part is that it's supposed to be working with MongoDB. The idea is to build a small digital library, so the main functionalities should be user registering, his login, querying database for books, showing list of results and viewing pdf files up to 200MB size.

Since I have almost no experience with web technologies, I would like to hear your advices and opinions on the technologies/languages I should use and learn. Should I go with JavaScript? Php? Something third?

Please note that this is a school project on which I'm working after my job, and not something to be deployed to customers.

We offer you to join our A-team and be an important contributor in an exciting agile web development team using the latest web technologies to develop our new front end using AngularJS.

Try out all sorts of things/technologies and find what interests you the most. Go after being an expert in that particular domain. Also, learn by doing.

When you rebuild the whole product and instead of using state-of-the-art technologies, almost everything is written by ourselves or old technologies.
JSF instead of REST + vue.js or similar
Self written DB-access instead of Spring/Hibernate
No Jenkins etc, instead write scripts to build it....

It's time for a job change I think

So many meet-up groups discussing "cool" technologies when I really need is a data structure and algorithms support group.

- Get to expert level on all my preferred technologies
- Get to travel after graduation
- Strive for a better position at current company
- Contribute to interesting open-source projects
- Hope to not go insane in the process

Is it worthy to spend so much time solving hacker rank, codility, code chef challenges or just learning new technologies and becoming good a t it? At the end, where should we put our energy on?

In the past 3 months I worked on a new frontend project at work using "new things" like vue.js and webpack including Babel polyfills on production for the first time. Now the project is almost done an I've been sent on to other tasks on our older projects to help follow the deadline at these projects.

It is a hard cut to switch my head back to the old legacy code after this long time only working with the new stuff and technologies. I feel much less productive at the moment, because I know how much time I could safe if I just could use the new technologies. But there is now way around this. Finally I now have to maintain Symfony 1.2 and jQuery again instead of building new awesome stuff in this exiting new technologies.

Have you ever envied someone that they know more technologies than you? (e.g they know a couple of frameworks that you don't have any idea about)

If you do, what is your response in this situation and why?

wk50 will be fun! Developing 3 new projects. 2 real ones and 1 mockup to show a client how our product will improve his daily life. All based on newest web technologies.

RPG Maker 95 – though I didn't know it at the time. Then it was just a slew of personal projects requiring different technologies — autodidacts represent!

Programmer lesson #3
- We can either spend our free time learning about new technologies or building something new out of technologies we already know.
- There is no right or wrong choice between this two and sometimes we even end up doing a mix of both
- Personally I feel it's better to strike a good balance between the two approaches to advance in our field 😄
