At first I was like: "wtf just happened? Why is that hand connected like it was a robot?".

"Is that a script or a hand job?"
A friend's colleague (who's pretty bad at English) that refers to manually typing in to the console as "a hand job".15 -
When you decide to use a model for an engineering picture this is what happens. (Look at her hand)26

I believe that devRant needs to have a scheduling feature that you can set your work time in it, so when your hand unconsciously opens devRant in that time, this activity pops up:10

Interviewing a candidate for a dev position.
Interview is over and handshakes commence.
After the interview we have a debrief in a room that has hand sanitizer in it (just coincidence).
I squirt some and it comes out like a rocket ship; getting all over one of his resumes we printed. It looks like jizz...
One of the head guys walks in a says:
“I hope he didn’t hand you the resume like that.”
To which one of our ops people, let’s call her Sara, says...
“No, leanrob just REALLY likes his resume!!!”
> I almost fucking died from laughter3 -

Knocked over a beer bottle with my hand and caught it mid-flight.
Felt like a fucking ninja.
No clue why I'm sharing this but goddamn that was good.3 -
A friend bought a new expensive mouse.
I made the mistake of asking how it feels in his hand.
His response was "Heavenly. Like cupping an angel's ballsack".7 -
Bob?
Yeah?
Bob, could you hand me that paperclip?
Sure mate!
Thanks.
Oh... Bob?
Uhhh... yeah?
Could you also hand me that paperclip?
Right... sure, of course.
Thanks.
Bob?
What?
Could you also hand me the next paperclip?
Fuck off, why don't I just give you the whole fucking box!
Yeah Bob, please, throw the whole fucking box.
Wait, is that a printed screenshot of my code you're attaching the paperclips to?
It sure is, Bob.16 -
This month's expenses:
- Computer parts to build a new computer.
- Separate video card.
- Hex monitor stand.
- 6 (second hand) monitors
I'm so sorry for my bank account 😥24 -
For those who were wondering, since my last post had some people who seemed interested, here's my progress on my 8-bit computer. I've got the clock on the left hand side, and the 2 8-bit registers on the right hand sign. (The power strips in the middle are going to be used as a bus)9

Is "sleep-coding" a thing? Fell asleep last night on accident with my phone in my hand. When I woke up, I had typed a few lines of code in my sleep.17
-
I have the habit of immediately closing parentheses after opening them, then insert the code.
The problem is, this applies to hand writing as well. Because you cannot move characters in a hand written exam I spend half of the time writing, then removing parentheses.

Bought a second hand coffee machine and went to get it by bike.
Put it in the back and drove home. It fell off somehow like a hundred meters before arriving home and its leaking now.
😭😞19 -
Bought that server from a friend yesterday.
About to buy a second dedicated server (second hand) with 32gb's of ram!
This is getting out of hand 😅26 -
Team meeting, discussing current project task, dude just slammed his hand on the ground and screaming like a child that he needs help and his taks is more important than others
Fucker got fired 7 months later, took long enough5 -
So a car hit me while I was riding the bike back from work and I fractured my collarbone. And I have to wear a sling on my left arm 24/7 for 4 weeks now.
But that's not the worst part.
Coding with one hand is.18 -
its amazing how far technology has come. I can edit a hi-res image in real time with a computer smaller than my hand.10
-
So I'm very much not a fan of apple and their products.
I bought an iPod Classic (160gb) today (second hand)
I was literally standing there wanting it while my ethics tried to withhold me from buying it 😅7 -
We hired a developer and he has very minimal experience. I feel most of our conversations end up going something like this.
New Guy: I'm not sure how to do this obvious task and I'm incapable of searching Google.
Me: Give me your hand so I can hold it and walk you through the process of copying and pasting code from stack overflow.
New Guy: Ok...give you my hand...right...how do I do that?

So I've developed a nice looking website for a client after designs were approved and what not. After seeing it in the flesh, the the client is now trying her hand at redesigning it herself in WORD. I am so done.2

I managed to do a chunk of programming in class today without my partner to hold my hand through it. It may be simple, but I am proud of it nonetheless.24 -
Yesterday my friend told me that he bought a second hand laptop of dy. I was first shocked by the name but later i got it.8

What do you do when you buy a second hand netbook and want to play with it in your way home but the internet is veeery bad?
You play Tetris on the terminal! \o/16 -
Reason #387 I wish I worked from home:
Some dude at this office needs to be banned from toilets. I'm pretty sure he craps in his hand then tries to swat it into the bowl with a slotted spoon.2 -
When you build a beautiful set of Sass files with grunt/gulp tasks, hand it off to another developer who makes all their changes in the compiled css.3

Saw an if statement like this in a hand me down company project:

After the face reveal and the hand reveal... Let's do something spicier! 😉

On my way to buy a second hand Oneplus One!
I don't think that not being able to remove Google services from my phone because this phone isn't supported by open source roms is a valid excuse anymore, especially since the new dutch surveillance law goes into plan the 1st of May.
I don't have that much money but I can afford this second hand device right now so let's do this.
Will install an open source rom without Google apps onto it!26 -
Job interview just made me realize I can't write a working line of code without IDE holding my hand ffs...4

At this point I think the "algo" is a secret team that's being held hostage and forced to sort the rants by hand 😂😂5

So my Internet was down the entire day

After a point it becomes involuntary. My hand just automatically goes to the laptop2 -
Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with coding. On one hand, I can feel on top of the world when something works the way I want it to. On the other hand, coding can make me feel more incompetent and depressed about my life than anything else. I would never want to do anything else with my life, but it's really tough when the thing you love is also the source of a lot of self-hate.1

Client has a hand drawn logo. Which is really bad.
We build a website with the same concept.
Client keeps telling us the website doesn't look sophisticated enough.
How do I tell them it's the childish logo?8 -

I ordered a second hand mini laptop. (Mini as in 8 inch)
Now I obviously will put some kind of Linux distro onto it but I'm wondering which one I should choose.
Debian based is a must, except for that I don't know yet.

Need to send a mail to a more senior member of the team. Could use a hand translating the below into something more work appropriate.
"You have reached a new level of wrong, you insufferable prick, please just shut up and leave"11 -
Hold yourself, this may be controversial.

I prefer to write CSS by hand instead of using a framework like Bootstrap because at least I know the way I'm fucking up my page layout.

I am gonna hide under a blanket now.19 -
Staying up late night and sacrifice on sleep to complete the task at hand. A good night's sleep will result in good quality code.1

@dfox what are your plans for devRant? Usually such communities get way out of hand with spam as it grows beyond a certain level? How will you keep devRant safe?15

Working with assembly is just something different... note to self: keep a cheat-sheet with the labels and corresponding addresses at hand.....8

i find when your having a slow day, or just don’t have the motivation to deal with the current task at hand, picking up a side project and working on that keeps you going.
either that or automate that crappy task you do at 9am every day!2 -
Every sacrifice you make for your job will be forgotten in a minute and won’t be rewarded unless you force their hand.
Luckily, I outsourced this experience and have never made sacrifices.2 -
Phones are getting bigger screens but also heavier. Why can't they just make a mobile phone that fits nicely on one hand and doesn't weigh like 1/4th of a kilo (phone+casing+screen protector).26

ESET Antivirus is a strange animal. On one hand, it seems reasonably well written, because unlike Norton or F-Secure, it doesn't subject your computer to death by constant disk access and 100% CPU load for 10 minutes when you start it.
On the other hand, when I clicked the link in the mail about renewing licenses and filled out the form, I was not redirected to a page where I could enter credit cart details.
Instead, I got message that some representative would get back to me in 1-2 work days. Eh, what? It's a digital product for f***'s sake. Now, I suppose they'll send me a hand written letter (written using a quill, no doubt), delivered by a bloke riding a horse and wearing a tricorn.
Well, at least ESET virus definition updates are pushed on the internet, and not sent out on 5.25" diskettes.3 -
i went to my college bakery and i bought a sandwich (costs 140) and ultra energy drink (costs 90) in my currency
i extend my hand with money and the woman takes a calculator and types with one finger 1 4 0 + 9 0 = and says "230"13 -

Got me a new mouse pad since the only one I had was branded with my last jobs logo. Mordor is right where I usually rest my hand so it will eventually get dirtier and therefore more evil.8 -

What I feared is happening.
I will barely see my gf for some time (until summer).
I just feel like crying, wanting to do a lot of things with her, barely getting to do so.
On one hand, I have a gf, on the other hand, fuck my life for worsening good things that happen to me.
P. S. if any of you fuckers unironically complain about the fact that I have a girlfriend (and you don't), go to hell22 -
After you brainstorm on a white board, take a photo, and clean up after yourself.
Coworkers were complaining about dried white board marker.
I told them to use the hand sanitizer from the bathroom, it will clean off all marks.
Now you know too.2 -
Had to adhoc re-record couple sponsored TV-ads' voice overs and didn't have time to get to a studio.. True engineer always finds a way to make most out of the resources at hand.
Excellent sound btw, good mic + non-echoing 'recording chamber'. ;)5 -
Just wrote a script that takes anything correctly tagged and pushed to master from gitlab, pushes it to the server, builds a jar and creates a docker image from it. On the one hand I'm happy that I don't have to do it from hand anymore, on the other hand I get the feeling I'm automating myself out of a job...9

fucked up my hand, spent entire work coding like on a typewriter.
for those who want to know, dropped coffee dripper on my hand, full of hot water. it was a first degree burn thankfully, water wasn't that hot. hurt like hell at first, but it's much better already. by monday I'll be ready to be fully exploited for my work again 👍16 -
My former housemates had a cat, they moved out and took said cat. Cat had fleas which I wasn't informed of.
Cleaning out the now vacant room with a can of flea spray in hand I utter:
"Now, my uninvited friends, sooner or later, even if I have to do it individually, by hand at times, I will find you all and I will squash you for I am a software developer and I deal with bugs all the time."2 -
Got a proper mechanical keyboard for work instead of that nasty third generation hand-me-down cramped layout crap they gave me. I also got a small plant for my desk. Fuckin fantastic.6

Recruiters who cold e-mail me get hard and specific questions before I ever give them a resume and phone number. Been doing this too long to just randomly hand a resume and contact info to whoever. YOU came to ME. Make it worth my while.3

I'll go first.. i would probably have been a librarian or a security guard. Someone with lot of time at hand to read.16 -
Went into a room that hasn’t been visited in a while.
I decided to clear up some space and see how dusty it was.
Naturally I use my hand to take the dust off the table.
My hand is covered in dust.
Because of the absence of a trash can, I have no choice but to open the window and throw the dust outside.
I open the window; a gust of wind rushes inside, blowing all the dust in the room.
Smh.4 -
Just had a CS test.
I absolutely annihilated my hand and those questions. It went so fucking well. I was allowed to take pictures of my answers to check if they were correct at home. I’ll include them here.14 -
Nice start to the day, I actually had to use science to open a milk bottle:
Problem: Cap doesn't turn no matter how hard I try
1. Increase the grip strength without hurting my hand by placing a paper towel between my hand and the cap
Still won't turn
2. Run hot water and place the lid area under it for 20s
Repeat #1, it now works!9 -

Our agile scrum team has finally shattered into two parts.
On the one hand we have front-end guys.
On the other hand we have backend- /dev-ops guys.
The FE guys don't care about the BE guys business.
They don't join pairworking and only noticing things that went bad, when a Backend guy has caused it.
Goodbye fullstack dev-ops team...
I really dislike that arrogant basterds.

Coding for MCUs gets more and more surreal every day.. On one hand we're cooding oldschool heavy metal C or C++, but on the other hand they tell you to use PuTTY to check if there is a working serial connection - what the fuck?
Also the IDEs they suggest you. VSCode or Eclipse. Both are so unbelievable unusable for this, even with plugins, I would compile this shit via CLI myself before using them.
It just feels so contrary - they act like professionals and just spit out 200 uncommented lines of C to start WiFi on the ESP32 - not explaining a single fucking thing, but on the other hand, they checked the connection via PuTTY after writing some uwu kawaii shit into Eclipse.
Not to mention Arduino with their FUCKING SKETCHES.5 -

Very conflicted about ProductHunt.
On one hand, love seeing all the new little productivity tools and SaaS tools with really nice UI. Fairly inspiring.
On the other hand, sometimes they can be complete cringe over there. It almost seems like a cult sometimes and they are way too enthusiastic about even the most boring things
ProductHunt: "This new productivity tool 🚀 will absolutely 🎉 change your life 😛. it is DISRUPTING 💪🏼 team management."1 -

In every company, there are those non-tech people who try to come up with creative ways to make us not do any work: useless meetings, stupid company activities, "initiatives" cause,
"Gohd! you have to take ann iniitiative".
Okay, I get it. You have a lot of free time on your hand and wanna seem busy. I, on the other hand, want to finish my tasks, get paid, and get on with my life.3 -

On the one hand I really wish there was a good open-source self-hosted file sharing and collaboration service which made use of modern web technologies to provide most of its features inline as well and not just through APIs consumed by client applications.
On the other hand, I tried writing a WebDAV server once, and I fully empathize with the people who have to deal with this madness. -
Found this on the bottom of my monitor. I think it might have quite a nefarious past. Bought second hand too.

WRITING CODE ON PAPER...smh
I know many people wrote about this already, but writing code on paper is one of the worst things of a CS class. I’d rather get a computer with no internet access and use a notes app to write code instead of having to write everything by hand. It takes so much more time that you could spend thinking about the problem. Not only that but also my hand gets tired of writing...ughhhh
I need to convince my teacher and the school to switch to writing code on computers! I will not loose this battle ahah8 -

IE : WHAT!! No, it can't be!!
Dev : here comes Ctrl+Alt+Del. Be gone....
IE : Nooooooooooooo, this isn't happening, Aaaaaa *dead*
Hand : we did it!!!10 -

Today, I fell for a prank that someone tried to pull on me several years ago that I was too smart for at the time.
I was told that it was impossible to crush an egg with one hand. I knew that was nonsense so I never tried. This morning I was feeling adventurous so I tried it.
As it turns out, it is definitely possible to crush and egg with one hand and that when an egg pops, its contents get all over everything.5 -

On the other hand everybody assumes you know how to repair a computer xD1 -

Disclaimer!!!
Do at your own risk.
-----------------------------------
- Take a strong magnet, like a neodymium magnet.
- Hold it in your hand.
- Move your hand across a Macbook 15"'s keyboard. Say from left to right or vice versa. Almost touching they keys.
You'll see the screen dimming. If you just hold it there for a little longer, it'll lock your macbook. It's funny, but I am not sure if it's doing some damage to hardware.8 -

I love to code even though i aint an expert in backend db related code. I raised my hand. Then he asked all the designers to raise their hand. I love to graphic design as a hobby even though i aint an artist. I raised my hand again.
He noticed and said "Interesting..."
It made me question which trade i should focus more on. I still have years ahead to master them but should i give up one for the other?
Would be cool to hear your thoughts on this!4 -
so what's on the list for today? writing unit tests for a broken php app because NO ONE THOUGHT TO WRITE THEM BEFORE HAND.......

For the first time ever I actually did well on a Computer Science test. I didn't even hand it in with any errors. It's the baby steps of progress that make me feel pretty happy. -
To be able to actually write useful tests BEFORE starting to code, which I guess is really asking for the ability to have a clear set of requirements and a complete mental model of the problem at hand3

Twilio's API docs suck.
Why can't they just provide a simple API reference will all the endpoints and parameters instead of some hand-holding tutorial with a helper library.11 -

What would be the best "hot"/upcoming languages for a final year college project?
The project will focus on reverse engineering.
Basic Example: Intercepting signals from products such as a toy helicopters/drones/etc, reverse engineer the signals and try gain control of the device from that.
That's just a very basic function and there will be much more to it, but I'm struggling to decide on a language to pursue hand-in-hand with this project!
I hear Rust, Go, Julia and co being tossed around a lot.
Any suggestions would be helpful!
Cheers7 -
CPU time? Wayland, or Linux.
I/O? Firefox or VSCode. If I'm pedantic about not counting dispatch as usage then VSCode because Firefox is just a mediator between me, the OS and the webapp at hand.2 -

Was wondering, how dfox and trogus did it?

An 'older' client, who is a respected doctor, needed a web site to sell a book he authored about cycling trips.
Simple... I thought... Until he literally sent me all the content.. hand written... on pen and paper... via snail mail... Along with barely legible Hand-drawn maps... fml2 -
It's a shame how you as a freelance web developer complete a project and hand it over to client and you check it over and over and you never find the client use the project.
It hurts my feelings really really bad.4 -

Started out with python, while meaning to learn javascript.
I am now competent in python. Im still not sure how it happened.
Started python because I got tired with doing repetative calculations by hand. I think I had like a phobia of problem solving with nested loops. any time I thought a problem would require nesting, especially more than one nested loop, I would just avoid doing it, or end up doing it by hand.
Wrote so many goddamn loops though in the process of exploring graphs, doing things by hand seems like a nuisance. Thinking in loops has its own zen or something.
Now I just need to get over my fear of json-based CLI-enabled configuration-over-convention.1 -

Developing IoT prototype, from Linux platform, via Java servers to front-end web-ui has made me fear and praise all these JS developers.

I'm torn on dev bootcamps.
On one hand, I learn the most in hands-on direct tinkering and bootcamps tend to exude this with well-trained instructors following best practices.
On the other hand, the short timeline means corners are cut and an overwhelming amount of material is dropped all at once leading to a leaky retention vessel at the end.
I prefer ramping up learning over a period of time to gain experience than a fire hose approach.1 -
Hand-coded or drag-and-drop web design do you prefer? And why?
I have been hand coding for a long time since I started programming. In fact, HTML is my first 'language'. I found that it is very slow to code compared to my normal friends who use Wix - which makes me consider a change.
Plus, I am not very good at designing.10 -

I‘m currently writing a http proxy server (something like the proxy mod in Apache, but more special). One the one hand is is nice that HTTP 1.1 can use one TCP connection multiple times, but on the other hand it is very annoying. Because I need to rewrite the Host header. And therefore I need the start of the HTTP header. I solved it after some time, but now my code is more complicated than before.

Wondering about how I should continue with my blog.
One the one hand, Ive always liked the video format Uncle Bob uses, and I think Id actually find it easier to talk about my ideas rather than write about it.
On the other hand, I know a lot of people prefer a written article they can read at their own pace.
Thinking I might try a hybrid of some sort, like record a vlog and then write the article afterwards, using the video for reference since I already got the words out.2 -

Is writing hand-optimized SIMD code even still worth it? Thinking about writing my own little math library for my game engine but I've tried writing a hand-optimized `dot(normalize(b - a), foo) >= bar` and somehow it's actually slower than writing the same thing using a math lib which is implemented exclusively with scalar math and auto vectorized by llvm
