(overheard parents talking)
Mum: I'm worried about our son, I guess he was hacking today
Dad: What? [Chuckle] No. He's not that grown up enough. Prolly programming.
Mum: But, the screen was all blue and there was nothing but text on it. And then suddenly it went blank. So, I asked him what he was doing and he said it was a BSOD. That sounds scary NSA level stuff.
Dad: it isn't [came out of the room, saw me there]
(And we laughed and laughed and laughed)4 -
Person: HTML is a programming language
Me: No it's not
Person: Yes it is it can compute things
Me: No it can't, and what do you mean?
Person: Have you ever heard of a script tag
Me: That's not fucking HTML that's JavaScript.14 -
How language creators choose the function to get the size of an array..
I mean, the life could be more simple, this is just an example.12 -
Every new product these days has the tag line "powered by AI"
FUCK OFF
No it isn't.
A mass of "if" statements isn't AI!16 -
My girlfriend sent me this error message from a BIM software which she uses at work. I would like to see more sophisticated error messages from a software with a 4K price tag.6

I remember last year in school one of my teachers had us make a little web page with HTML and CSS. She was confused when I was using an external CSS stylesheet. She thought all the CSS had to be in a style tag inside of the index.html file...6

I AM MISSING A FUCKING DIV TAG OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND I CANNOT FIND IT. MOTHERFUCKER FUCKING FUCK.17

Dev: So tell me some specs about the app you want.
Client: something like facebook.
Dev: you know facebook has too many features for even having a price tag?
Client: what? Will I pay too? I have the idea.

Just realized. The only use of port 80 (providing it runs something like NginX/Apache) is (or, should be anyways) redirecting users from a non-secure connection to a secure one.
Poor port 80 😖45 -
My teammate used p tag and made it look like a button using css.
He has 10 years of web development experience.14 -
Today I welcome a new bot into our little world.
Have you ever had the need to write "did you google it" before?
@lmgtfy will turn your comment into a lmgtfy search.
Just tag @lmgtfy and any text afterwards will be added to a search term. (Excluding emojis - because reasons)75 -
I’m a .NET desktop fullstack dev these days… Never worked web unless for my own small needs/personal projects.
I started using tech one way or the other by the time windows was version 3.1 and been through quite a bit ground-breaking changes in the industry of software development and the internet but if there’s one thing I cannot understand of it all, no matter how much thought I put into it is: How the fuck did we manage to make it so fucking complicated to develop anything these days?
I remember like it was yesterday that you could stand a website with HTML, CSS and JS, three fucking files and you’ve made yourself a single page site. Then came the word “Responsive”, “Responsive” written everywhere. Fair enough, grid system popped up. All of the sudden jQuery was summoned… and everything that happened after this point has been a fucking circus of high-pitched teens talking on conferences about fucking libraries and frameworks to make integration with real time, highly scalable, eco-friendly, serverless, data driven, genome aware, genderless, quantum technologies to interact with bio dynamically generated organisms, namely fucking users.
Every fucking bit of the process of building a mobile/web application seems to be stopped by yet another incredibly dumb attempt to suicide a developer. Can you go from starting an app and publishing an app without jumping through a thousand VERY specific hoops? No, fuck no.
I fucking hate it… It’s a bit hard to get Desktop dev jobs these days but for as long as I work on IT I will continue to stick to that area, until someone for the love of life comes up with a fucking solution to all this decadent circus of bureaucratic technocracy.
Fuck big industry, fuck tech giants, fuck javascript and webassembly, fuck kids putting ASCII art on console applications that I DON’T FUCKING NEED to install dependencies THAT I DON’T FUCKING NEED to extend functionality on frameworks that I DON’T FUCKING NEED… oh wait, I do need all this because YOU FUCKING MADE IT MANDATORY NOW! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU!!!9 -

The fact that I can buy a game for $70 price tag today, and still run the risk of it getting taken away from me, by the company that built it, is why I'll always pirate games.
If buying is not owning, then pirating is not stealing.12 -
Just made a 10-minutes change on the website for a client for free while the company originally in charge of her website development wanted to charge her 660€. For a simple <script> tag.6

A wild "Using this website in incognito mode requires a paid subscription" blocking div appears
Normal people: okay... *proceeds to exit incognito mode*
Developers: huh.. Bitch please.. *inspect element, hide blocking div. Select html tag, remove "overflow: hidden". Profit*
Why would anyone want to block surfing incognito anyway? They should be encouraging it actually..
PS:, While writing this, wondering if content for subscribed users is also locked this way.. Now that would be hilarious.4 -
What the fuck Apple, I thought selling a monitor stand separately at £999 was bad, £360 for putting fucking wheels on your Mac Pro, fuck me.
I had no fucking clue how to tag this, hence why it’s got 3 categories to it11 -
So due to contracted work I am in a team internal chat, yesterday morning I woke up to a notification with a full group tag with "we need to remove all fags, they don't work out the way we planned" - he meant to type tags - there's two members that are gay and got hired just recently lol9

A few years back I worked at a company as their front-end web developer with one other guy who was their "back-end" developer. PHP and MySQL specifically. He was eventually fired and I took over both development roles. When I got around to seeing his source code and the way he had created the databases, I immediately saw why he was fired. This guy did not understand the concept of loops. Instead of separating out tags and categories with a split / loop, he set up database tables for EVERY. SINGLE. TAG.
i.e. tag_1, tag_2, tag_3, etc. And then to top ot off, instead of looping through the tables, he set up huge conditioks for EVER.LY. SINGLE. TAG.
i.e. if(tag_1) else(tag_2) else(tag_3) etc.
That fucking guy...6 -
Started writing PHP as a tag for a rant and the third suggested tag is "PHP #facepalm". What are people trying to say about PHP? 😝1

I'm a web application developer and work for an abattoir.
On slow days I sometimes I go out and pick a cow, give it name, scan its ear/rfid tag, lookup what farm it came from and how much it cost, then monitor it passing through the various production lines.
Yup.4 -
Is it true that the seo guys get more ++ because they know how to tag the post in a manner that keeps it on top in algo list?4

Product manager had me spend an hour setting up his machine for rails development. Then walk him through all of our workflow. He then proceeded to make some changes to a header tag content. Made a pull request while I was holding his hand. Then he walks out of his office acting like he just won a national championship and proceeded to talk about how he was basically a developer for the next hour interrupting work.4

I have made a stack overflow question with "JavaScript" tag. And got fucking 12 views! Twelve!!!
Nobody fucking likes me! :(
But I got "tumbleweed achievement" so I got that goin' for me which is nice.7 -
Just spent 3-4 hours trying every possible solution for fixing a strange bug. Turned out it was caused by a closing tag in the wrong place...3

My own personal hell was a html page that had a script tag that called a rest endpoint that sent back a text block of JavaScript that was then dynamically executed to redirect the user to a php 3 page that was the exact same thing as the original page but with an extra bit of css to make the buttons blue and slightly rounded
You can’t make this shit up6 -
650 line hand constructed xml file missing a tag. Took me 3 hours to find. I looked at the section at least 3 times but my brain would not pick out the mistake. Online cal validators all pointing me to the wrong places.
It takes persistence to be a developer so pat yourselves on the back.5 -
Sehr bored!!!! :v I was so bored I started reading rants with the tag “bored” and found a rant of @VenomCLC writing the name of programming languages in a particular way XD so I drawed this.
Enjoy it.2 -
One of our devs seems to love "attribution" comments in anything he writes.
private void foo() { //Author: John Cribbins
...public static final int FOO_BAR = 21; //Author: John Cribbins
I mean, I get it for an author tag at the top of a file, but certainly not on every field or method. Is this some kind of weird thing newer devs are encouraged to do these days?!9 -
Spent an entire day trying to fix a major bug that made the entire application fall over... It was an unclosed div tag. Literally one missing / can cause so much pain!3

When you order a bezillion tiny things at small prices to avoid toll on one large package, and you have no fucking clue if everything has arrived.

People love fast moving green text with a black background.
I have linux on my laptop and I have a script (litturally just 1 line) that outputs random hex data to the command line.
I ran it while WebStorm was starting up and I had people instantly telling me to shutdown all the pcs on the network xDD6 -
Ok. Let do a little tag game.
Whoever is taggedhas to learn a programming language specified by the tagger.
You then have to code a small programm in that language here on devrant in 24h. If you fail, schtroustrupp will hate you...
I start by tagging... Who am i gonna tag...
Mhh...
Lets start with @Linux
You have 24h to code a program in gerCompiler (i need to advertise my projects, yknow)33 -
A teacher where I used to study, thinks that there's teo types of Java:
Java NetBeans, and Java Eclipse.
Sime othe people there think that Java works only on Eclipse.
Some graduate students still use the marquee HTML tag, and encourage each other to use it.3 -
Picking the web development field and becoming more of a business person than a dev.
I want to develop more interesting things (like games, AI, etc) rather than corporate websites and web apps. Now, I can't even write a mobile app ffs.
I can't even work on my hobby project lately.6 -
My friend a backend dev who manages a little UI by using bootstrap themes. One Saturday he calls me up says "Dude, I need your help, we had a demo and the CEO decides to demo the project to prospective people on Internet Explorer. It looked alright on Chrome but the whole UI has gone haywire on IE. Need your help asap. Join me on screen share". I checkout his HTML code and find a file where the link tag is inside the body tag. I ask him to move that into head tag as in wherever the master template is, I tell him to change the doctype, add responsive meta tags, and even after all these, it just doesn't render bootstraps media queries. After beating my head for around 15mins, I see a drop-down caret in IE's inspector with 7 besides it, someone had set the compatibility mode to IE7. Why in the world would someone set an IE11 to IE7.
My friend heaved a sigh of relief and walked to his boss to show that he isn't a bad developer, his boss is just a bad user.3 -
Spent 4 hours debugging a “button” styling, worked fine locally but not on production.!
After striking out “cache” issues, “browser” versions, “fonts”, “sass errors” the error was with a stupid chrome extension that appended a css class attribute to the “HTML” tag 😡
And the other developer thought that was a part of what was written in the code !!
Hate these kinda plugins that manipulate the DOM 😪
P S the plugin is "Grammarly".2 -
You think HTML isn't a programming language? Tell that to the guy wrote js to check if a hidden div contained the word True inside its tag before it fired.12
-
So after two hours of debugging I get to know that Chrome doesn't differentiate between font-weight 100-500 unless on a Mac, and IE does, but IE doesn't support the <picture > tag 😶9

Oh the beauty of WYSIWYG etitors...
I don't know which one I'm more amazed of. All that beautiful styling for a simple line break or that incredibly accurate and absolute neccessary line-height value.
I guess it's time for a strip tag massacre.4 -
Apple really needs to add a "Deceased" tag to its facial recognition system, I just had a "memory" appear with a full 1:30 minute long video of my Grandmother who passed away earlier this year with "extreme" music in the background1

Jesus Christ Almighty fucking Instagram is a real shit show lately.
So many fucking bots. The porn bots than spam comments and DMs, the bots people tag in comments that get you a lot of likes and then just people that use bots to comment on posts.
Like fucking hell bruh can y'all fix your shit?7 -
Started development on a Firefox addon again:
Adding an onclick HTML tag/property (however you call that) - doesn't fire at all.
Adding an event listener - says no elements with the class I'm using (checked, it's correct) exist, doesn't fire.
Well, fucking great 😐4 -
Just asked something on stackoverflow.
Has been 15min already. And still no downvote and no comment saying “fuck off”
Today is a good day.
🙃
Sorry for wrong tag. This ain’t a rant. I was just thinking “so? -> rant”5 -
Why mac lovers compare their Mac pro or Mac air with a 300$ windows laptop? Can't you compare it with the same price tag windows laptop?
Because what you are doing is like comparing a Mercedes S500 to Toyota corolla!5 -
Quick tip: ! means NOT. So !rant is a post which isn't a rant. !question doesn't indicate that the post is a question, but rather the opposite (and therefore there isn't really a need for that tag). You might also see something like !!rant which is the same as writing rant (that tag is also unnecessary, considering the name of the app)7
-
I just spent almost a semester's worth of money on a certification course. I know it'll help me make more in the long-run and get me out of the job that has started to cause me to become actually depressed, but this price-tag is depressing me. Why are certs so damn pricey???2
-
Has anyone noticed that rants here have a pulse?
Yesterday was a VIM day. Today is windows-sucks day.
What's the tomorrow's topic? Anyone has an agenda?
*whoppsie, wrong tag12 -
Why do some Devs feel the need to over complicate code to make themselves seem smarter?
No, we don't need a wrapper for a <p> tag that builds a normal <p> tag with a message your provide.
Use a normal tag! /facepalm4 -
fucking hate how some sites deliberately break their own scroll functionality if you haven't logged in/accepted gdpr nonsense/signed up for a newsletter.
It's such an easy fix (most of them just slap style="overflow:hidden;" to their <html> tag) but I still think it's very loathsome1 -
FRIDAY MADNESS:
As I was so busy coding, one colleague was taking a break and distracts me as he's done with his task. As he approached, I snobbed.
Him: Dude, did you know that there's a generator for all the images in sprite?
Me: really? How?
Him: spritegen.website-performance.org. What's cool about it is that the html and css are already generated just like in font awesome. For example, that i tag...
Me: cool. I wonder dude, why would they use i tag when it makes the text italicize, right?
Him: right. Probably because its used for icons also because icons starts with letter i.
Me: LOL.
Him: LOL. -
Zebra tc51 with a price tag of 1299.99usd. No power supply, no cable, 720p screen, snapdragon 650 soc. This is the RED camera in android 🤦♂️12

me vs marketing guy, again
me: yeah, the database server is not responding, so you cannot log in to post your blog, wait for it to get online.
MG: But, the website is online.
me: web host and database server are two distinct things, they are not the same, *share a screenshot of the error*
MG: Oh okay.
Literally 3 hours later this fucking idiot sends an email and I quote.
"Hi Dev,
@CTO FYI, Someone has removed this code So there is some tracking issue on it.
Please add below google analytics code on the website.
Note: Copy and paste this code as the first item into the <HEAD> of every web page that you want to track. If you already have a Global Site Tag on your page, simply add the config line from the snippet below to your existing Global Site Tag.
<!-- Global site tag (gtag.js) - Google Analytics -->

window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}

The fucking issue was of him not being able to post his shitty blog, and he shares an email like this, FOR FUCK'S SAKE!2 -
Since memes have become an integral part of our community, I propose a way to handle them without affecting the actual Ranters.
Everyone adding a meme or a gag picture can do so under a particular tag, and the Algo can handle your meme needs by exposing you to that particular tag based on your activity with such posts.
Or you could just make the users search for memes if they wanted to see them.
This could also be done vice versa by ranters using a RANT tag, I would keep my RANT filter on so anything without that tag won't show up
To make it better you can provide a sort of suggested tags option :
|gag|¦¦¦|meme|¦¦¦Ranf|¦¦ scroll to the right for more... Kinda thing
@dfox @trogus please tell us what you think about this8 -
When you start a new project with 2 more developers. You see their CVs and they look experienced.
(Fast forward one month....)
You realize you are the most experienced one and they are waiting for you to guide and mentor them.
The worst of all I thought I was going to learn from them because I still am not ready to mentor other people.
Aaaaaand now I am panicked.
I miss the time where I used to sit in my corner, do the tasks that was given to me and that's all. Now I have to code, build documentation, assign tasks, etc. I am not ready for this. I never asked for this. I just wanted to be a developer. :( :P2 -

Who in their right mind puts an id on the head tag.
Css? Don't need it.
JavaScript ? Can directly access it anyway
It fucking breaks old browsers your not even giving them a chance to look at least average !
This is for a huge site as well that he got to work on because he is related to the owner .. he's an arrogant prick as well ... Don't know shit bout programming anything4 -
Added a new feature. Saw no traffic. Removed it thinking no one liked it. Receive a bunch of angry emails.
I forgot to tag shit properly. FML. -
<feature-request>
What if we could 'share' a rant with another ranter (friend)? Then they would get a notif.
I could of course tag that person but that would create so much spam on a rant.
</feature-request>4 -
I swear to God it's people like this that just get on my nerves
"Oh look at my fucky javascript code"
"Let's tag it as JAVA NOT JAVASCRIPT BECAUSE IM AN UTTER IDIOT"
It appears that proper tagging is not just a devRant issue.7 -
When you point out a bug for the first time on a popular library and your issue has been reopened with apologies and given the bug tag.
Feel like a boss after struggling with the problem for 14 days haha1 -
Have u guys noticed internet dev advice is fucking awful now.
“Don’t worry about web performance”
“You don’t need an ID on an input tag”
“Don’t use just react anymore, use a combined framework like next”17 -
So I wanted to get back to some hobby projects and C# so built my own DevRant GUI.
I am curious though what other devs think.
TBH, I've never had anyone give me a code review and not sure how of a developer I am...

Got back to devRant almost after a year today.
What's the new 'supporter' tag I've seen on some profiles?31 -
Guys, check your tags before posting on weekly rants. There are a few of you still posting under previous week's tag. The question and the answer don't match. 😛
Also, I think I just scared someone off because I mentioned the wrong tag. 😬9 -
Online tag, it was a small game topdown only using programmed graphics (simple circles squares and lines). One could hide underneath trees, and there were powerups, toggleable walls.
Was quite popular for a year or two. Would love to make a remake of it.2 -
Am I dumb/blind or devrant could use the reply on the rant itself? I have a problem when wanting to tag the creator and I have to type the username (if not previously replying on the rant)..which usually means switching between the rant and comment several times before I get it right.. :/8
-
Features suggestions:
1. When we type @ in the comment section it'll be nice to have autosuggest of users as we type. This will help not closing the comment and checking the spelling again and again.
2. Search available on basis of tags. Type in a tag you want to search about and get all rants/questions with that tag.14 -
!rant is a logic operator, right? As in NOT rant. So why do I so often see them on actual rants?
And for that matter, who cares? If there's a [Read More] tag, you'll click if you want, regardless.
Why is this a thing?8 -
The W3C HTML validator just told me to add a lang attribute to the <html> tag on my website. Apparently it didn't notice, that the <html> tag was missing.3
-
Google Tag Manager is a complete abomination of UX. The whole concept is just ridiculous, it lacks at least 3 levels of automation. Non-tech people won't be able to use it and for tech people it's laughably inadequate while still being conceptually difficult. A perfect combination of a tool that does too much and too little at the same time.1
-
What do people think of LinkedIn?
I keep getting pointless messages about introductory level positions, integration consultant or sales stuff, all for salaries below my current by a significant margin.
Has anyone had anything useful?
The fact that the second suggested tag is "LinkedIn is shit" may have just answered my question...3 -
Just got into a company as a fresher. Have never liked doing frontend (no offence). They are making me do frontend. Now, I'll forever bear the tag of a frontend developer. Can't quit due to money issues. Don't know where life will take me.4

Man, making scripts for random shitty tasks is so god damn nice. Like pushing a new version in a repo. Throw together a script to find metadata and kubernetes files and identifies and update versions automatically, then commit, tag and push. Simple script, not even 100 lines of bash, but saves so many silly mistakes.16

Currently working in a virtual Linux machine running on a Windows host. The Linux VM is running i3 and I just locked the host for the umpteenth time because my dumbass pressed Win-L to switch one Window to the right...
Also, while typing out the tags, I got the tag-suggestion 'my password is as weak as my mental state' 😂 -
I had to use XSS (cross site scripting) and tag injection to change one tiny CSS property on a bug tracker site where I have no actual file access and can only add custom footer text. Why not just give me file access, or at least some way to customise the CSS, you stupid thing!2
-
Well... Well... What a multi-talented personality...
Every connection I see on LinkedIn has these buzz words in their tag line: AI/ML, Cryptocurrency, Blockchain.
This guy even has Smart City...!!!
Don't know how many of them are legit... I just don't understand each of these techs are so vast... Still people manage to get expert in all of them in just few days... What's the secret...?8 -
A Google app that would let you tag good skating locations on Google maps. The idea itself wasn't stupid, there was just already a more generalized app that did a damn good job of it already. (That's how I figured out that most "like (blank) but for (blank)" project ideas are dumb)3
-
Was wondering why my script wasn't working. Added it to my node modules. Imported the style sheet with a require. Checked the gulp config file. Made sure it was in my pipeline. Checked my webpack settings and made sure jquery was loaded first. Checked my version on npm, crossed referenced with my package.json file. Why isn't it working....forgot to add the script tag in my html😤2
-
first off, i think this may be out of scope but either way.
i think along the rants, a tag seperated section for programmer tips could be pretty neat :)
i'll start off, my tip of today would be: if it seems too complex, it probably is.
consider refactoring by splitting into multiple smaller parts or even its own seperate API. :) -
I created a class Log with a method d(String tag, String text) to replicate Android's log method in Flutter.
class Log {
static void d(String tag, String text) { print(tag + ": " + text); }
}
I replaced all 'print' into 'Log.d' in my project and I wondered why emulator kept crashing for the past two days.
Now I know..4 -
I just reallized I've done so much photo editing that I made a few tools for it in different apps.
So this morning in a flash of insight, I've made a single app that consolidates them all...
Basically it's just a window that opens all the others by referencing those projects... That was probably the fastest I've ever written an app... other than Hello World.
I can't tell if i am lazy, efficient, or organized... (i couldnt put this in the tag because of the commas)1 -
Bower, YOU FUCKING PIECE OF CRAP PACKAGE MANAGER!
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?
This asshole software is fucking with me and steals my time!
bower mapsjs-core#* cached e-tag:64e4e0850
bower mapsjs-core#* resolved e-tag:41af792c9
bower mapsjs-core#* install e-tag:41af792c9
What would you think is the installed version? WRONG! It's the fucking old cached version.
What the fuck is happening? Probably it's thinking "oh, this is the cached version, I'm looking if there is a new version for it. Yep, new version. I'll download it. But I have a cached version in the user home-directory, I better tell the that I installed the new version but take the old one."
Crap software.7 -
I think people get *way* too annoyed if someone tags their post here with the wrong tag, even with completely new users
Seriously, who cares if you see a few jokes in your rant feed? I know some of the jokes are bad, and in that case just scroll past them, even downvote it if you have to, maybe remind them to post it in the right tag even, but it annoys me seeing posts here about people being as annoyed as they are about wrong tags7 -
Hate to admit but I am really not feeling react thus far... a function to output an H1 tag that takes many times longer than just creating an H1 tag... why?4

How to give a massive fuck-you to SharePoint:
1. Add a Text Editor web part
2. Click Format Text -> Edit Source
3. Place in a script tag for vue.js or whatever framework you like
4. Develop your website like a normal person.
Boom. Done. Your pain is over.6 -
Me: *opens devTools*
Firefox: yea bro lemme just ..uh.. hmm yeah so this is the css for the element, see?
Me: Thanks.
Me:
Me: this makes no sense, why would I ever do that?
Firefox: also you can't have width on an anchor tag. I can't put that rule into effect
Me: I didn't put any width on your inline element, you sure about that?
Firefox: yea try using display: inline-block
Me: No. I'll just delete that. *checks file*
Me: Maybe that line is wrong because IT DOES NOT FUCKING EXIST!
What is this shit? I just restarted you! What else do you need, a reinstall? Drink too much over the holidays?
It's like the css editor has become a shallow tray with rules on it, and as soon as you bump it a little everything spills over and then Firefox just thinks oops, I've got this font-size: 200% lying around, lemme stick this into the hr tag which makes sense because THERE CAN'T BE ANY TEXT IN IT.9 -
I was thinking about how I implement login functionality, and realised I have no clue how I came up with it so decided to ask if it was a good way to do things.
Basically, client logs in, username/email and pass are sent to server.
Server salts and hashes password and checks it against the one in the database for that user.
If its correct, send the client the user ID and the user token. (User id could be username, or a number, it depends)
When that client makes a request, the request must contain the ID and token.
The server checks that the ID and token combo are correct, and because the ID is linked to the user we know who it is and can complete the request.
Usually I make the token a random string of 16 or 32 chars, each account has their own token, and it may be stored in the browser so they stay logged in. I also normally add a "log out everywhere" button, which essentially just generates a new token to overrides the current one, making any previously saved tokens invalid.8 -
@dfox @trogus : Do we have a feature of auto complete @ mentions ? If not, there can be an elegant feature to provide drop down suggestions to mention / tag user in comments after we type @ in comments of any rant ( not all the users , but author of the rant and those who previously commented on that particular rant previously. For example, if I commented on a rant of dfox, and trogus also comments and types @, me and dfox will be in the drop down, tapping on which will select and tag that user on that comment ). I bet users will love this devRant update. Sorry for long post , I don't have any potato :p3

would you guys like to see a blogging network?
it will
- be similar to youtube/medium in many aspects
- posts will be written in markdown
- related posts will also show up
- you can tag posts
- posts can be made private or link-only
- essentially just a privacy respecting, simple blogging network, where people can tell stories, write an article, etc
- i intend to make this somewhat social, eg. you can share your profile link with friends, follow people, etc5 -

That moment when you have hundreds of lines of code for your website, then you wanted to add a simple modal which looks great on w3school.
Then you recreate the modal on your site, click the button and nothing happens....
So now, you are spending hours trying to figure out why it's not working, new file to test, tried another modal concept, change the CSS, refresh the page until the F5 button doesn't even work anymore!!!
To find out, there is a extra "." in the href file tag plus the tag is in a id not a class -

In the darkest dankest parts of the code, I have discovered a way to get the tag UNDEFINED to show up in this rant. They call things that are unknown a black box. But you see, if you have a good enough shot gun, you can begin to blow enough holes through the box to figure out what's inside. I never said that whatever was inside the box was going to make it out... I just wanna get a good idea of what was inside.4

My worst experience has actually been trying to fix someone else's code. One of my friends is in a graphic design class, and right now they have to do a basic site in DreamWeaver (a small nightmare on its own, I've found that the previews they show are never quite correct). I decided I'd at least pop in to help out a bit, cause they kinda have no clue what they're doing. They are graphic design students, NOT developers, and it's very easy to see that.
One of the first things I noticed was EXTREMELY unorganized code, but that's forgivable. But...I once saw probably 5 </body> tags in someone's code, a JavaScript function inside of the <body> tag, and a bunch of CSS statements in the <script> tag that they had one if the JS functions in.
I remember seeing this stuff, and I thought "what the actual fuck?". The dude was like "yeah it's unorganized as hell, I know"
...That's not the problem. CSS goes in either a <style> tag or a separate file (THEY HAD A SEPARATE CSS FILE). JAVASCRIPT GOES IN A <script> TAG OR A SEPARATE FILE
But, I get it. They're graphic design students. They can outdo me in probably everything in the Adobe suite (except DW as I learned). I once watched a girl in there do a project in Illustrator. I had no fucking clue what was going on. And when I was talking to her about it, she said "that's what I was thinking when we were watching you fix our code"
Kinda got a little sidetracked there. Basically, worst experience is non developers writing code for an assignment. -

!rant, but a feature request.
@dfox, whenever I use the comment box, it covers the whole screen. So, if I wanna tag somebody in my comment, I gotta close the comment box once, memorize their username since there's no autocomplete on @'s and then type back.
Either the comment box could be shortened, or autocomplete be added to user tag function, which could atleast detect the users commenting on the current thread (since programmers suck at memorising).
What say, DevRanters?5 -

A customer specialising in identification and security solutions called today, claiming "they" found malware on their website. Then they provided a weird link to some shady malware scanner, and the "malware" turned to be a <noscript> tag which adds ?noscript to the page url, so we can serve no-JS optimised content. As a bonus, the scanner only detected it on two URLs, even though every single page on the site contains that same line of code.

I must assume that whoever designed jinja2 was either on crack, or hadn’t used template systems before. This thing is too fucking complicated, and doesn’t make sense. From their docs:
“Jinja2 supports dynamic inheritance and does not distinguish between parent and child template as long as no extends tag is visited. While this leads to the surprising behavior that everything before the first extends tag including whitespace is printed out instead of being ignored, it can be used for a neat trick.”
My response: “I don’t give a fuck!! I need this fucking website to be fucking done already! I pass data into a fucking template engine, and the engine applies my fucking markdown!! This is bullshit!! Why am I still trying to understand your fucking nonsense?!? AGGJCDJVFD&@!?&@$?)@&!SHHHVBSHK!!!!!!”

So far I'm really loving the wide variety of functions, but I'm struggling to get used to the fact that everything in the ASP.net part gets "processed" (like using BuildForn to create a form tag instead of just typing the HTML) and it just slows down the process a bit 😂2

Just as I had been discussing information security here on devRant, Facebook reminded me of an article I posted a year ago.

Not long ago I was having a conversation at work with a coworker on a topic of a product I know for certain I had never, ever searched for online. Just after we ended the conversation, I launched my Twitter app and, lo and behold, there was an ad for that exact product on my feed. -
Any Symfony expert here? I've got quite a tricky question, that I'd love to disqus with another dev.
It's about twig within symfony. I'd like to add a custom node parser, but not for an own tag, but to set some value on each template if it's not set (which can't be done with globals in this case!). I've thought about using a visitor, but from my understanding it gets executed to late, as it requires (probably) to modify the twig AST at compile/parse time.4 -

let title = $(this).attr("data-title");
fetchPage(url);
$(".ajax-nav-link").removeClass("active");
$(this).addClass("active");
return false;
}else {

At work we use a custom python library to parse XML responses from an internal API to objects. I literally spent half an hour pondering why an if statement was misbehaving. Turns out it parsed <tag>false<\tag> as obj.tag = 'false' instead of the boolean False which obviously made "if obj.tag:" misbehave 😒

When your third party IIS application evaluates the X Y coordinates from an input type of image and IE10+ make them as floats where every other browsers just does int. Hours of debugging lost. Solved by using a meta tag to emulate IE9.1

What do you guys think about this?

It's facemash, recreated using firebase and a static website.

Anyone having issue with browsing this weekly topics?
I can't go into this week's 3 Wishes specific feed.
Tried by clicking the tag and browsing Weekly Rants menu. Both directed me to last week rants.
I can only attach screenshot of weekly Rants list. Clicking and ending up at last week feed is not possible with screenshot alone.
If you guys also have same issue, I'll open a ticket.7 -
It's now 3am and this issue has been keeping me up for inner an hour... In Entity Framework..
I have a 2 tables/classes in a relationship: Item has many Tags.
I'm trying to delete some Tags using context.allTags.RemoveRange({list of tag objects I want deleted}) but now for some reason it's trying to reinsert/duplicate all Items and thereby violating all uniqueness constraints.
Guess will post the source code TMR but this is like wtf?1 -
Saw that there exists a tag named "lisp is op". Have anyone used it for something good? I get an anourism by the look of it..2

!rant
I was scrolling devrant as we do and spotted something intriguing.
Just beneath the panel where the 'wyd' tag is- is some background text. And it is static. Its the bar of check boxes that allow us to choose a filter (Algo. Recent etc)
Just random noticings.1 -
Seriously why on devrant does searching for a tag return some rants without the tag, but by people named after the tag. And sometimes just with people with *related* names (eg. PHP returning a bunch of non-PHP-tagged rants by some called Phlp or something). Seriously.5

Me and a friend are making a discord bot, and added a warning command to warn users.
All was going well, and when we tested the deleting a warning it seemed fine. I then tried to delete all the warnings one by one, when we came across a problem. It wont delete the last warning in the array, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc? Thats fine, just the last index that isnt working.
Our code is like this:
list = data.warns//a list of JSON format warnings
console.log(list)//shows the value is in the list
console.log(list[index])//shows the value
delete list[index]
console.log(list)//shows its gone
data.warns = list;
console.log(data.warns)//shows the value is still no longer present
data.save().catch(blah blah)//no error is caught, and nothing crashes, it proceeds to send a message to the channel after this
but then the value at index is still there in the database as if it didn't save it, but only if the index is the last item in the array.
We have been stuck on this for over an hour and I now remember why I hate programming.2 -

Q: I'm using make as a simple task runner. `make build` instead of a longer build command etc. It sucks that I can't simply pass some params like `make build dev`, instead I have to pass them as variables: `make build tag=dev`.
Can you recommend a standard, cross-platform (Linux, OS X) tool for this?9 -
So it turns out the site my app scrapes for those NSFW pictures actually scrapes another site.
Now it just seems to mirror that site like a proxy though doesn't work well... pictures not loading, links not working.
But then at the bottom there's like a Copyright tag which shows the other site's name.
I wonder if perhaps he got tired of playing cat and mouse with me and just said ah screw it... I give up, here's the source, go scrape them.13 -
Anyone else ever spent more than a couple hours trying to find the right spot for that missing closing div tag on an html page?3

Things are getting better. Little by little with no stop.
Among other things we have a list of posts based on a tag.

Theme: Security awareness - grey-hat style.
How to play:
Post the name of the site followed by actual bad-password restrictions of well-known companies in the comments.
If no-one beats me to it, I plan to share some of the more alarming ones(or all) on a twitter and tag the relative companies as well as various security enthusiasts.4 -

why would you just do /> ?????51 -
Dammit! CSS is such a huge pain in the ass. I just want to use a <style> tag inline with a class to control margin positioning of one friggin’ image. (Yes, I know it’s better in a CSS file but this is a temp fix that will be reverted soon.)
<style>
.30-day-seal {
margin-top: -27.5em;
margin-left: 39.5625em;
}
</style>
<img class=“30-day-seal” src=/path/to/img.png”/>
Nothing happens. Only if I use a style=“” attribute directly in the img tag.
I’ve even tried:
<style>
img.30-day-seal {
margin-top: -27.5em;
margin-left: 39.5625em;
}
</style>
And
<style>
.30-day-seal img {
margin-top: -27.5em;
margin-left: 39.5625em;
}
</style>
And even
<style>
img .30-day-seal {
margin-top: -27.5em;
margin-left: 39.5625em;
}
</style>
Why do I suck so bad at this?! Still!?6 -
Anyone else here just hate how emotes are implemented in most apps? I love using emoticons but I despise bad emote icons. I wish there was a standard way in apps to revert emotes back to ascii and to have it show up to others that way, too. Similar to how bbcode had the [nobbc] tag >~<1

Is the grouprant broken for anyone else? Question and tag never seem to match for me, for example, this week it says "Tips for staying productive" / "Add tag 'wk247' to your rant", but it is linked to https://devrant.com/search/..., which is obviously a different topic.1

What if I build a platform for programmers and they are able to give ++ on posts (like button is from Facebook era, grow up!), comment and tag each other?
It would be a plus if there was a bot of a guy that keeps creating accounts for him, like, everyday. And this guy may be called jase.
Oh well, it would be a great platform! I could call it dev++2 -
Suggest to add a search bar in the "Collabs" section, that way we can find interesting project easily. Search by tag will be cool.3

I couldn't find a program for this so I'm making one. Cli based. Have a json object you need to unmarshal in golang? Yeah I was getting tired AF making structs for all of them with the json tag name over and over, so I'm mid way through a python script that generates the structs for you. I'll link it here when I'm done.
And if you're wondering why python? Dynamic object definitions. That's why it's trouble in go in the first place.3 -
I want to build a website but i don't have laptop. So I install notepad ++ app in my android phone. But here is a problem. Every time I am going to add images using html and img src tag it doesn't show. This is the biggest problem with my own. Plz tell me a solution.11

Is ColdFusion still a thing? I just got a contracting job at this startup. I know nothing about ColdFusion. Spent yesterday and today just figuring how to dynamically create a folder inside this <cfscript></cfscript> tag. I am yet to figure it out. -_-

So pissed off at aws. My goal is to deny the creation of any taggable resource without having a specific tag on the organizational level. (tag policies, service control policies, etc)
Tag policies do not have any effect if the resource is created without any tag. WTF.
I managed to put together a service control policy, that makes it impossible, but since not all resources are taggable, I had to list every taggable resource in the policy and put every read action on a condition. Surprise: the policy exceeda the max size limit. FML. -
Today, I saw a table mean to store tags designed horizontally, each column store a tag with value 1 or 0. 🤦🏻♂️

text-size-adjust vs viewport meta tag
So, I'm designing a mobile-first website with the chrome mobile simulator. I saw that when I put some text in it, for example a <p>, it will display very very small, and will not take into consideration the font size that I gave it, unless the <p> contains several lines of text. I did some research and I figured that this behavior is due to the text inflation algorithm used by mobile browsers and it can be stopped by using text-size-adjust:none. Is that correct? Then, the viewport meta tag. I figured that the viewport meta tag is used when a website it is not designed mobile first, and will help display the content properly based on the smaller width of a mobile devide. Is that correct? In conclusion, text-size-adjust with the value of none is used when building a mobile-first website in order to stop that inflation algorithm and help display the text properly, and the viewport meta tag is used when bulding a NON mobile-first website. Is that correct? Thank you6 -

What's the best tool to convert vid to HTML5 (Mp4 + WebM + Ogv) and keep good ratio between Size & Quality ?
I have a 1min lenght vid in FullHD. This is a demo reel that loop in fullscreen at the first website launch.
I tried Miro converter, Freemake and can't reduce files under 15Mb without obtain poor vid quality. It's seems too heavy for a website.
Do you have any tips ? A tool to convert vids, an online service to upload the vid and use it instead of using HTML5 video tag.
Thanks20 -

I have been taking Udacity frontend web courses and got to the react projects. Trying to get Google maps and react to work together has been a nightmare. The Google docs have you put a script tag in the HTML but react puts the HTML in the JavaScript and it is very confusing.

Trying to get a stupid string to be localized in a widely used extension for typo3 (sr_freuserregister). Just add a marker to the HTML template and try to localize it via typoscript.
3 hours later im going to put in my string in English and German and just going to hide them accordingly to the language code in the <html/> tag. Holy crap. -
So I posted my rant 2 days ago and got a comment teaching me the proper use of tags. Bruh so I gotta be careful while ranting too?
Note to the same guy - I will still use the same tag. You can give all the "--" you want to give. XD1 -

P.S devRant team please get post separation up so that I don't have to add a 'question/rant/meme' tag to everything I post. <3 Love u guys! -
(tldr: are foriegn keys good/bad? Can you give a simple example of a situation where foriegn keys were the only and/or best solution?)
i have been recently trying to make some apps and their databases , so i decided to give a deeper look to sql and its queries.
I am a little confused and wanted to know more about foreign keys , joins and this particular db designing technique i use.
Can anyone explain me about them in a simpler way?
Firstly i wanted to show you this not much unheard tecnique of making relations that i find very useful( i guess its called toxi technique) :
In this , we use an extra table for joining 2 tables . For eg, if we have a table of questions and we have a table of tags then we should also have a table of relation called relation which will be mapping the the tags with questions through their primary IDs this way we can search all the questions by using tag name and we can also show multiple tags for a question just like stackoverflow does.
Now am not sure which could be a possibile situation when i need a foriegn key. In this particular example, both questions and tags are joined via what i say as "soft link" and this makes it very scalable and both easy to add both questions and new tags.
From what i learned about foriegn keys, it marks a mandatory one directional relation between 2 tables (or as i say "hard a to b" link)
Firstly i don't understand how i could use foriegn key to map multiple tags with a question. Does that mean it will always going to make a 1to1 relationship between 2 tables( i have yet to understand what 11 1mant or many many relations arr, not sure if my terminology is correct)
Secondly it poses super difficulty and differences in logics for adding either a tag or question, don't you think?
Like one table (say question) is having a foreign key of tags ID then the the questions table is completely independent of tag entries.
Its insertion/updation/deletion/creation of entries doesn't affect the tags table. but for tag table we cannot modify a particular tag or delete a tag without making without causing harm to its associated question entries.
if we have to delete a particular tag then we have to delete all its associated questions with that this means this is rather a bad thing to use for making tables isn't it?
I m just so confused regarding foriegn keys , joins and this toxi approach. Maybe my example of stack overflow tag/questions is wrong wrt to foreign key. But then i would like to know an example where it is useful5 -
Visual Studio can stop being a fucking asshole and stop tabbing my code around for me, you piece of shit.
I have an @if statement in a razor page in a <script> tag
Indented is a <text> tag so it'll accept javascript
Indented in that is my javascript . . . that it keeps trying to "fix"
Swear to christ this autoformat is more infuriating than helpful.1 -
Uh, oh. Helping finish a project heavy on forms. Notice that everything is straight up jQuery to pull and push every single individual input value. Not a form tag in sight. But there are tables. Tables are everywhere.

This rant is only because I have a rant, but not related to the weekly rant, so I don't fucking like a tag that I didn't choose to come up... Fuck off wk1381

Moengage is one of the worst analytics software I have ever worked with...
Integrating it into a react website is a pain in the ass, they don't have a npm package, you need to add a script tag to html file.
It also has a wierd bug that the service worker they mentioned in the documentation doesn't work when the debug logs are off.
Aaaargh. Now I have to make a service worker handler to import this service worker and see if it works...
